09x11 - Nissan Skyline R33

Post by bunniefuu »

this time on Wheeler dealers I buy a
budget supercar we decide to create a

drift car by boosting the power to the
rear wheels the question is where is our

intercooler and how big is it this scene
is all about going sideways at speed.

and after a lesson on drifting dynamics
our car is ready for the track you

want the top in or effectively
the bottom edge but will

it end in tears when we
put our theory into practice.

I buy the metal and wields the spanners
and together we turn rusty rects into

shiny classics and
sell them on for a profit.

the Nissan Skyline is a coupe with
samurai sharp lines and a monster turbo

under the bonnet one of the originals in
drifting motorsport where racers hang the

back end out and speed high-tech
Japanese design at its best a supercar of

mainstream money it's stupid quick not
to 60 in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of

over a hundred and fifty
miles an hour in stock trim and

on the second air market
they're an absolute bargain.

so the aim here is for me to find a
nice cheap Nissan Skyline something that

me and Ed can throw a few quid at
with a rear boot spoiler big fat tires

and upgrade the engine and go and
have some fun because we want to make the

perfect drift car I'm looking for an
unmodified r33 a highly regarded 1990s

fourth generation model you can pay
over 10 grand for a sorted skyline but

can't add any value to a clean high
spec car right now even the cheapest

motors I'm finding bottom out at
four grand too much cash if I want to

create a cheap drift car well I
have found cars but for this mission

to work and for me and Ed to really
add value to one of these Skylines as

a drift car we need to be looking at
sub three grand and I just can't find a

decent motor out there so I'm gonna
abandon my search on the Internet and

jump onto my trusty phone and doll
around a few friends in the trade and see

what they can come up with listen
Peter I need your help it's got to be

cheap though tone all right calm
yourself down I'm running down the phone

battery here but eventually my old
mate Sarge comes good well it sounds

good it sounds very good what color
he's got a mid 90s car with an MOT it

runs well looks solid enough in metallic
gray and the price it's 2,700 quid.

trade so it's time for me to hit the
road console within the trading usually

about 15 to 20 percent under retail
so this could really be a great deal for.

me now the car I'm gonna go and
see is only 2,700 pound but that doesn't

mean I'm gonna switch off my Wheeler
dealer radar because I know the engine

in a skyline is a massively high-tech
turbocharged unit and if there's any.

here we are at Sarge's place buckets
of Japanese cars there's in this hand

skyline and there's Sarge himself great
to see you buddy and you Mike you're

right Wow what a good-looking car
tell us about it this one's an r33 GTS

Japanese import two and a half
liter turbocharged rear-wheel drive it's

alright I mean it's happy odd little
grace it's got a little bit of repair

here and what's going on over there
Sarge that's a common problem with.

some of these skyline is this rust
on the suspension turret that is gonna

have to be done because something
like that would be an MOT failure in the.

future right yeah and it doesn't look
an easy thing to repair there's a nice

air filter here suck in some more air I
sounds awesome that Mike can I hear

it sure go on and fire it up it's all
nice and straight across the front.

smooth very smooth
give me a proper massage.

you can hear that the turbo sucking
in the air that's very good yeah look at

that lovely well it certainly does sound
absolutely lovely Sarge out there yeah

now inside this steering wheel that's
a bit unusual isn't it and white dials

yes a lot of aftermarket bits as carbon
gear knob comes the boost Gauge

turbo timer sparkle pedals the
important thing is the dashboard on

the skylines these often where the
rubber comes off but someone's looked

after the dash and the door
trims fantastic well it looks nice and

sharp down the rear nice big boot
spoiler got a nice shape nice and clean

I bought down my trusty torch so let's
get right into the corners okay down on

this left-hand side that all looks
nice and clean under the carpet yeah

that's all right as well a little bit
surface rust down there Sarge but I

suppose that clean off will it yeah
that should be fine that's normal it's

all good and down into this corner
oh dear now down into this corner you

can see that this cars had a clump
on this rear wing and somebody's had a

puller to pull it out you can see the
weld marks but on the face of it yeah

it's pretty pretty normal Michael
these cars being rear wheel drive high

power often get caught out in the
rear corners inexperienced drivers.

yeah but it's been done well isn't
it yeah bad repair at all and the car

really saved you've got to expect
it haven't you yeah okay well it's all

good the color is really strong I
really like that I love the look of it as

well it's got some real purpose this
car the only thing I don't like Sarge if I

was honest is these wheels are horrible
wouldn't they Michael although they've

got corrosion on the surface there's
a rare Japanese ad-ban racing wheels

they may work in Japan mate but
they certainly don't work for me but

we can talk about maybe changing those after
I take this baby for a test drive sure.

wow it's like going into hyperspace.

that's exactly what I remember a skyline
is all about sucking in golf ba*ls of

air through that great big air filter
and blowing out the exhaust pipe this

car has got a surge of power
and talk that just keeps on giving.

this car feels really well screwed
together the steering is instantaneous

but it feels really dirty on the road
there's no noises or clunks coming from

the suspension also the gearbox
lovely nice and slick instantaneous

changes very nice indeed the clutch
feels like there's plenty of meat left

on it as well this car is up for sale
for less than 3,000 pounds can you

think of another vehicle that could
offer this much fun for that money this

is a very serious budget supercar
that in this end skyline has always

been a hugely popular car with the
modifiers this one in stock form puts

out around 250 brake horsepower
but this engine is two and a half liter had

the potential to actually produce
about 500 brake horsepower right now it's

time to think about price of whether
this skyline suits my needs the

drifters out there they're not
really interested in the bodywork and

what it's like inside it's all about
the mechanicals and about the

potential of that engine and at
2,700 quid I think this car is a bit of a

steal but I will go back and try to bid
him but whatever happens I'm gonna tell

you one thing this skyline is
definitely coming home with me.

that was great fun well I gotta tell
ya Sarge I liked it I'm impressed it

drives lovely on the road it's just
what I'm looking for right now when we.

spoke on the phone you said it was
2,700 quid as a trade towel can you do

it a little bit cheaper than that I
can't do it cheaper that Mike it's a

cheap skyline at that price I have to
agree with you I think it is a cheap car

so I've sort of made me mine up on
the motor but I'm still not convinced about

these wheels they are horrible
and it looks like you've got something

prepared for me what are these I
found you said a staggered 18-inch wheel

perfectly match your car that's
fantastic I like the color because

they've got that gray in them as
well it's gonna match the bodywork do

you offer one up to the car
yeah just have a look see what the

matches like they're nice and they
good set of boots on there as well yeah

that's gonna look fantastic isn't it
how much are these they're 500 the

set 500 for the set yeah what
would you give me for the old ones in

those advance I can allow 150 back
for them a cheap deal three thousand fifty

for the car three thousand fifty if you
screw these wheels on that car balance

them up make sure it's all alright
I'll give you free grand cash deal deal

with yes I just bought myself an
awesome Nissan Skyline a great start

to a drift car project now the challenge
is on I got to find a lot of cheap

high-performance parts that up the
power and get our skyline set up to go

sideways I've tracked down a skyline
one of the best value supercars around

I've got here this is one cheap
car I've just given three grand with a

different set of wheels for a proper
four-seater coupe with a 250 brake

horsepower turbocharged engine and a samurai
body kit just the right side of call.

now tell me that isn't a bargain
so what's the plan well I've said all

along we're gonna go drifting
but I want to go drifting on a budget

because I reckon we can't spend no
more than the five hundred pounds on

our skyline and the reason for that
is simple I've give three grand for it

and by the time it's done I reckon
it'll only be worth between four and

a half thousand pounds but I know
that we can get this car going sideways at

speed on a budget because there'd
be plenty of second-hand parts out there

that we consult and bolt to our
skyline and have a load of fun.

ah very interesting Michael a
Nissan Skyline a legendary fast car

how are you mate I'm good this is
cool but I have to say I seem to me they

don't go for very much money these
days you get enough of a deal to in a

frost micro profit oh come on it would
you know me of course I got myself a

good deal these are great value for
money and it's all about having a bit

of fun this car we're gonna take this
motor drifting so now that makes perfect

sense because these are awesome drifting
cars and I think it's already started

off with the lovely wheels on it
already oh glad you like the wheels

because I actually did a deal on
those wheels before you got your

mucky hands on it and that's smart
the car up and change its appearance

oh it's cool what else we're
going to make it into a drift car well I

think the first thing we need to do
is to attack what's under the bonnet

it's already got a good strong really
reliable engine but it's just not fast

enough and we need to add to
it to make it well just go a little bit

quicker really and presumably that's
gonna be within a very tight budgets on

I guess maybe a bigger intercooler
perhaps bigger intercooler great idea

suck in more air get a little bit
more bang at the spark and then a lot

more power so really we should be
fantastic cause then we're gonna need

to sort out the steering and the
handling because of course drift cars

need to be set up in a different
way well drift cars it's all about getting

the setup right so you can cheat
the rear of the car out it's about going

sideways as fast as possible it's
great inside it's lovely not much to do

there it's a really sharp looking motor
and I guess the other thing is it's got

to look more Larry because drift cars
are all about being there they've got

lovely stickers on them they got
these huge wings on the back I'm not.

too sure about the stickers but I
agree with you with a rear spoiler yeah

that one's a bit stock so maybe we
should change that for something a

bit better okay so doesn't to make
it more powerful make it faster and

have loads of fun and then take
it drifting with you should we get

it in yeah that's a really good
choice actually the skyline is a great

piece of kit it's a street racer that is
ultra reliable but having said that my

first job is gonna be under the bonnet
but I'm not gonna be playing around

with that lovely revvy two and a
half litre motor I'm gonna be sorting

out a niggling bit of rust now you
can see here signs of the dreaded

metal worm this is actually quite a
common problem on the skyline to make

this turret as strong as possible to
locate the suspension they add a little

bit of extra metal now the thing is
water tends to get in between these

two skins either from the top more
lightly from underneath through the

wheel arch and of course then the
corrosion starts and before too long

you've got an MOT failure on your
hands because of its proximity to the

suspension mount so my job is to
nip this in the bud before the corrosion.

gets too bad this might look a
bit drastic but trust me it's the only.

way I've got to cut out all the rock
and steel on the outer skin of this

suspension mount it's exacting
work and you've got to hold your nerve.

I've got to be a little bit careful here
because I want to try and remove as

little of the metal as possible but
obviously I've got to remove all of the.

rot now I've just cut through here
I've tried to cut through just the top

skin then the same on the back
here and then just down on the side

there as well so theoretically this
little piece here is now pretty much.

ready to come out so the only thing
holding this little panel in place are

the spot welds and so I need to remove
those and the best thing to use is a

spot weld drill now if you compare
that to a standard one you can see the

difference is in the tip if I was to try
and drill through the top skin but not

the second one with this probably
end up damaging both whereas with this

special drill because it's almost like
an end mill there it's actually gonna

drill through the top skin without
really touching the bottom skin at all.

the spot welds holding the inner
and outer skin together are eventually

drilled out and I can begin to
free off the top layer of steel what it

reveals as I peel it back is plenty of
corrosion I'm just trying to clean up

this structure I really want to get
back to bare metal so I've got a really

good surface to weld to but also
once I've gone over with some rust

treatment hopefully it should never
ever corrode again at least not for a.

long long time now first of all I've
gone over with the wire brush that's

ripped into all those flaky bits of
rust and I'm using a soft pad just to

kind of Polish it up and to get
through to the really good stuff the.

outer skin of the suspension strut
is stripped and the inner skin is now.

cleaned up and ready for rust treatment
this is really clever stuff just paint

it on and it keeps the tinworm
at bay only if you've done your.

preparation properly if you've left
corrosion on the panel then it can

always come back well the car
is prepped and ready for its repair

panel I've got a genuine one it's gonna
fit perfectly but the downside is I do

need to cut it from this part from a
donor skyline so just as before I'm

drilling into the spot welds to
separate the inner and outer skins.

here's a clever tip I need to make an
exact template of the damaged section

so I'll fill the gap with masking
tape once I've got the rough shape

then I'll trim it down with a knife and
the template is formed the template

then fits over the new second-hand
skin section and I grind away.

then it's treat with rust stop and I'm
ready to see if my template offers up.

okay especially a pretty good fit bit
of a gap there but that's okay because

I need a bit of a gap when it comes
to welding to get extra penetration

which is good so happy days I sand
back the edges well to reveal bare

metal before getting down to the
welding I need to make weld the skin

into position once the metal is stable I
do some plug welding in the center of

the panel to create a strong bond
between the skins finally I seam weld

all around the edge of the steel
template a layer of primer and then

the top coat finishes off the job a
garage would probably have charged me

£300 to do all this now any
prospective buyer who knows his stuff is

going to be looking for corrosion on
the top of the struts but because I've

done that repair and given it a
good lick of paint that's not a problem

this car has to worry about
for many years to come.

this is what drifting is all about a
snarling engine the car flicking from

left to right the rear end hanging
out and all under the close control of

professional driver Walton Smith I
want to know how to get our car to do.

this so Walton's gonna talk you
through what makes drift cars so different.

fantastic awesome what I gotta say
what a demonstration that was young man

thank you very much brilliant well what
makes this car I mean it's outrageous

isn't it but what makes it so special
well one of the number one things is.

even though it's a Subaru it's running
a 500 horsepower skyline engine

look at that so it's all about having
a nice powerful engine if you can.

drifting well not only that you have
to do a lot of work on suspension side

of things as well okay because I
know it's one thing about this car as soon

as you got out which caught
me a bit by surprise really it's this

steering lock you got on the car why
do you need such a big steering lock to.

keep the car a lot more stuck to the
ground and one thing that people don't

realize is we actually run a lot
of grip in the rear as well to carry

speed through the drifts on the
front you want grip more like a track

racing car for stability and on the
rear you want grip more like a drag

racing car what I wouldn't mind
doing if you're up for it is to take me out

as a passenger and show
me how you do it yeah

you're on have you got
a helmet of course I have.

Oh completely sideways
the ball to pour it in the car.

another way to get it so sideways
for so long what's the technique there.

the trick is all about throttle control.

I want to watch your steering
technique as well because there's a lot

in the steering isn't there yeah
there is a lot of a lot of the time

you actually allow the suspension
setup of the car to work the steering

for you so if you look quite often
like letting go the steering wheel for a

second and grabbing it again as it
spins through the different turn well

let's go for it.

and I'll tell you what pretty
furious and it I mean there's a lot

going on it's steering it's brought
all its body it's holding you sir

it's quite exhausting it is I after a
day's drifting you sleep very very

well I bet you do I reckon that I
could do with your help and set up a

drift car to make sure that we got
a pucker motor that sounds like a

there's a lot of little things that
you have to get right the suspension

setup to make it a lot lot easier to
drift and I can definitely help you out

with that perfect go on
and lay it one more time.

Oh 360 to finish it off brilliant.

Walton's giving me plenty of food for
thought I now know what we need to do to

turn our car into a decent drifting
machine it's gonna cost more money than

I thought so I'm nervous whether we
can squeeze a profit the turbo spooled

up and the pressure is on drift
cars need to be fast and furious so it's

time we started boosting the power on
our car this straight-six engine is turbo

powered and the turbo is down there
on the other side of the engine now a

turbo effectively is two fans on
the same shaft now the first fan is

actually spun round by the exhaust
gases rushing out of the engine and

that in turn spins up the second fan
which compresses fresh air going into

the engine but the problem is when
you compress any gas it gets hotter but

an engine prefers cold dense air to
get best performance so to get over this.

problem with turbocharged cars
manufacturers put in radiators to cool

down that compressed air they're
called intercoolers now the bigger the

intercooler is the more efficient
it is at cooling down that air and

therefore getting the most power out
of your engine so the question is where

is our intercooler and how big is it
it sounds strange that I don't know

where the intercooler is but these
Japanese classics have some of the

most crowded engine bays I've
ever worked on I'm trying to find this

intercooler and the pipes rip going down
into the inner wings I'm just gonna look

in through the bumper and there we
go well it looks like a pretty standard

intercooler looks rather small so
I'm sure we can do better than that a.

quick phone around and I find a
secondhand replacement intercooler and

I get some useful advice on how
to strip out the old parts too well

that's great and you can deliver
it to fantastic thank you sir cheers.

em bye-bye that's really good
news it turns out that the Japanese

performance parts market is actually
pretty big in the UK and many of the

used parts are being imported direct
from Japan I've managed to get hold of a

really big intercooler for quite
sensible money and it's gonna be here

soon but before I can fit it of
course I'm gonna need to take out the

old one there's loads of pipe work
to free off but this is definitely the.

kind of work you could do on your
own car I need to remove the near side

wheel to get access because the
intercooler is behind the inner wheel.

the secondhand intercooler I found
cost 315 pounds that will give our car a

significant power boost but I'm
worried that even this good value part

is pushing our spend hard when we
need to keep it low to make any money back

on our dr*fter this is our standard
intercooler the air goes in one end

comes out the other having been cooled
by what is essentially a radiator now

you can see in between these little
cooling fins are these little tubes and

they rather restrict the airflow if you
compare that to our brand new but clearly

secondhand intercooler you can see
these tubes are much much bigger and of

course also the whole thing is like
twice the size which is why it's so

much more efficient at cooling that
air and in fact we're kind of hoping for.

an improvement in performance of
maybe five or even ten percent the

downside is how on earth do I
get that into there the standard

intercooler used to go in here on
the inner wing and you can see it's

quite a small hole to get that air
into it so to get best performance out of

this we want to get as much air going
through it as possible so the obvious

thing is to get it on the front of
the car now I guess with this big

gaping chasm here the obvious thing
we need to put it behind here but to

get it to fit because of the fans
and the horns and everything behind

there I'm going to cut away quite a
bit of this bumper but you know what I

think that's my only option
the front bumper has to come

off so I can work out
how to fit this big bit of kit.

the intercooler comes with its own
mounting plates and they locate simply

on the front chassis arm I have to
ensure that the intercooler is located

symmetrically at the center of
the car and that is at the right height

to get the maximum airflow through the
front bumper once the mounting plates

are in place it's a case of connecting
the pipes and we're halfway there well.

the intercooler is now in position as
is all of the tubing that it needs which is

fantastic nice and solid so now I can
offer up the bumper and start trying to

work out exactly how much material
I'm gonna have to remove I've got my

measurements from before which is
great it's always better to measure way

more times than you cut here's a tip
when you're marking out before making

a cut use masking tape to draw on
because it's easier to see your lines

when you come to do the cut now
before I can start cutting the bumper I

need to remove these bits of grill
here there are tiny particles of fiberglass

flying around so I masked up for
safety I refit the old grill mesh to

protect the intercooler from any
objects which might fly up and strike

it from the road then it's time to
offer up while the bumper is now

modified and if I've got my
measurements correct hopefully it should.

fit first time so here goes
it's been quite a bit of work but

fitting this huge intercooler to the
front of our car is really gonna help

with the engines performance the cooling
effect of all that extra air rushing

in is gonna help the engine get even
more power out of that turbo boost and

that's gonna be just what you need
when you've got your foot on the floor

and you're flying sideways around
a drift circuit this is one cool fix.

Ed, how you doing mate that's a fast and
furious Nissan Skyline well actually it's

going really well I fitted a massive
great big turbo intercooler you can see

it poking through the spoiler down there
Wow wicked and that should give us some

extra power just gonna make it easier
to get it out on the back end great did

you fix that little rust spot on top
of the suspension turret I sure did

well I've been busy too I've been
out finding all about this drift scene

it's a really complicated process you
know because I bumped into this guy

called Walton who's gonna give you
a master class on how to set this car

up for drifting well that sounds
really good because it's always nice

to learn something new and it's
always really important to get those

technical details just right so the
next time I come down here this

Nissan Skyline will be ready hopefully
for its fast and furious test drive

because I do feel the need the need
for speed we plan to take this car drifting

and there are a few good value mods
we can do to help with the handling

the first of which is under the bonnet
ideally you want the engine bay of a

performance motor to be as stiff as
possible because any twisting of the.

body shell or flexing means that
the car doesn't handle as well but this

area is a bit like a shoe box without a
lid because the bonnet doesn't really

add any strength so to that end
there is a nice cheap fix that you can fit

what's called a strut brace
basically this is a bit of metal that goes

between the two strut tops there and
there and the idea is that makes the.

whole engine bay a lot more rigid
which means of course you get better

steering performance I'm freeing off
the top bolts on the suspension strut.

any decent tool kit will have a
socket suitable for this then I fit

the mounting plates which the strut
brace will bolt on to now this job is so

easy if you're rude not to do it at
home yourself now our secondhand strut

brace is made out of a lightweight
but strong aluminium alloy and it's made

specifically for the Nissan Skyline
these little kinks in it here mean

it's gonna clear the engine nicely
but despite that it's still going much.

stiffer than if there was nothing
there at all as expected though you can

never be a hundred percent sure with
secondhand parts the strut brace fits

exactly in place and can be quickly
secured job done well this does look

quite trick but the real benefit will
only become apparent on the cornering

under heavy load and I reckon Mike
will be well up for that anytime soon.

so on the front end our skyline will
perform better on the back it needs

to look a lot better I've got a plan
for that old rear spoiler it's going.

this is our secondhand custom wing
you can see it's been made out of some

quite sexy aluminium extrusion and
the rear wing here is actually pivoted

along its leading edge and can be
kind of moved in four positions so you

can choose how much downforce you're
gonna get now this certainly isn't the

hardest job I've ever done once I
found the locking nuts inside the

boot lid and freed them off
the old spoiler comes away.

it was all going quite well until I
actually removed the rear spoiler from

the boot you can see all these gaping
holes are now here now the thing is the

new spoiler has the mounting points
near the middle of the center of the

boot so of course these are going to
be left there so a nice top tip always

have some grommets lying around
the workshop just in case this sort of

thing happens because this is a
racing car we're not too bothered about its

aesthetics I can get away with just
getting one of these little grommets

just popping it into the hole there
and that way it's just gonna tidy the

holder up and stop water getting
inside the boot measuring out where the

new spoiler will sit I will use
masking tape for clarity I transfer

those markings to the inside and
then make two small initial pilot holes to

check the positions once happy I Mark
the whole positions with a center pop

to stop the drill bit sliding then I
make the exterior pilot holes and.

finally drill through with the correct
size clearance drill bit finish each

hole off with some rust guard to
protect the bare metal work which I've

exposed with my drilling these
fittings are pretty heavy duty and once

they're in place the wing is simply
bolted on and we're ready to impress on

the streets it cost 145 pounds which
is good value but will it add anything

more than pose value to our car
drifting is all about being Larry and in

your face and our new wing is
definitely making a statement one thing's

for sure Mike is gonna love it the
work is going well on the skyline but

we've gone over our 500 pound
budget the performance parts were

secondhand but I reckon we've
spent too much Mike said this car is all

about fun but making a loss won't
make me laugh our budget supercar is an

awesome Drive to get the maximum
profit from our drifting car all that

power and performance needs to be
focused on the right setup so Ed's next

move is to meet my drifting mate
Walton drifting relies on oversteering

into corners to get the best drifts the
camber and caster how the wheels sit

on the road need to be carefully
adjusted as they hugely affect the car's

handling so to maintain controllable
sideways slides like this our skyline

needs changes to the steering
geometry that setup needs to be done on a

special four-post ramp where the car
can be adjusted while it sits down on

its suspension just as it does on
the road now we've borrowed this

four-post lift so we can actually
set up our car and get the right

geometry underneath it is Walton he
is an expert in drifting and sets these

cars up for a living so hopefully he
can tell us exactly what we need to do all.

right how's it going and more
importantly how's our car doing very

good we've got adjustable tension
rods and adjustable camber arms being

fitted to the car that's fantastic so
we can set that up exactly how we

need to for drifting exactly what
about the back end of the car we just

as lucky I think you are at the rear
we've got adjustable camber arms that's

fantastic so we can adjust the
camber on the back of the front and the

cast on the front so it means really
this car has got all the toys it needs

to be set up perfectly
for drifting I actually think

this car is used for track
driving and track days.

skylines are often used as track day
cars and owners fit aftermarket parts

which give extra adjustment to the
steering geometry before he begins.

adjusting them Walton is setting
up this special kit which allows him to

accurately read our skylines camber
which is the vertical angle of the

wheels relative to the surface of
the road so this little device here is

going to actually tell us our camber
and then eventually our caster from a

drifting point of view you're looking for
between two and three degrees camber

which you want the top in or
effectively the bottom out so literally

we're expecting our wheel to end up
putting our Gauge about there so the

reason we want the wheels vertical on
a standard car is because you want to

have that grip when you're going
straight along so you want the wheels

or the bottom of the wheels the
contact patch to be as big as possible but

when we're drifting because we're
pretty much at full lock one way or the

other we actually want to then try
and counteract that and make sure that

we've actually got the full contact
patch then is that right exactly what

we've got to do now is we've got to
tilt this to about three degrees so it's

time to Jack it up get the wheel off
and adjust our top camber around

fantastic cool to get the angle the
wheel comes off and Walton adjust the

suspension top arm he reads the
digital Gauge as he manhandles the top

arm into position before locking it in
place so we've got now 2.6 degrees of

camber is that about right yeah I was
hoping to get three degrees but that's

the maximum on these camber arms so
anything over two is good and now we've

adjusted the suspension obviously
we now just to check the caster angles

are the same on both sides of the car
otherwise I guess we would have messed

up our suspension again exactly because
of the caster is different it's gonna

end up pulling left or right so we
have to make sure it's all even cool

let's set that up when you turn
the steering wheel the front wheels.

rotate about a pivot caster is the
angle between this steering pivot and

the vertical measured in degrees
as seen from the side of the car the

caster angle causes the self centering
effect you feel in the steering wheel

when you go from a corner to
a straight line Walton is creating

positive caster by tilting the steering
pivot backwards the adjuster on

the tension rod is physically pushing
the bottom of the wheel forwards so for

drifting the driver will have more
front-end control and the car will

return to a straight line faster after a
turn okay that's pretty good we've now

got six point five degrees of caster
on this which is fab so we have to do

now is the other side and then all
of the tracking if a car veers off left

or right when the steering wheel is
at dead center then the tracking is out

all the work we've done has affected
the tracking so we need to make small

adjustments to the wheel alignment
to get it all back on track we've spent

all day setting up this car and it's
been complex but fascinating an expert

like Walton would probably charge
you around a hundred and fifty pounds of

labor for a drift alignment like this
worth thinking about if you have a track

day car and want to improve
the handling that's it well done.

fantastic so now our camber is sorted
our caster is sorted our tracking is.

sorted our car is ready for drifting
so thank you very much Walton that's

been wonderful no problem the
skyline is ready it looks mean and will

handle sharp my trade contacts are
found in this r33 and we cut a cheap

deal so that makes a total price
three thousand fifty three grand cash

about that for a deal done yes
plan was to tidy up the rust and then

build a car to go fast sideways the
huge second hand intercooler will help

the turbo work better up in the
power to the rear wheels under the

a strut brace stiffens up the shell and
a wing on the back adds a bit of bling

Mike is gonna love it finally the
car was set up ready for a sideways.

session resale values for these cars
are low so the plan was to keep the

part spend below 500 pounds I
bought the car cheap but even though

everything was secondhand we still
went over budget in the end our total

spend was three thousand six hundred
and fifty five pounds will we make a

profit or have we drifted towards
a potential loss it a doing mate as a

skyline is it finished it is
completely finished as you can see

we've got a nice new aftermarket
spoiler on about there and also your

mate Walton popped down and gave
me a hand setting up the suspension

geometry of the car so now it's
gonna handle just the way we need to

anything we need really now it's a
bit of talent behind the wheel so the

three things I gave you to do
you've ticked the boxes we've got a

look we've got more power under the
bonnet there's one missing and that's

to have some fun it's time
to take a skyline drifting.

two men and one very fast car and
a big big bit of time as you can see

behind us we got some cones laid
out in a figure of eight star what we're

gonna do is have a turn each behind
the wheel we're gonna drift the car as

close as we can to the cones without
knocking them over so it's all about

speed driving line and of course the
angle of the car but who's gonna judge

who's best and our little drift off
you see that fella over there that is

drift driving expert he's called
Steve Evans and he's gonna

judge both of us to see who's
the best dr*fter how are you?

How you doing? Good.
Right guys I'm here to

keep a good good close
eye on you I'm gonna be

scoring you out of ten points so we're
gonna flip a coin see who goes first

heads. Heads it is.
Mike you are up. Perfect.

Before we could start
the competition the

rain came down making it easier to
drift but much harder to control the.

slide.

use the throttle to balance the
car and get it nice and slide in.

nice tight line from Mike
there it's looking rather good.

nice transitions left to right through
the center of the figure of eight.

look at me I'm a drift king.

I've not done too bad but I don't
think I've done brilliantly either.

so at the end of that
how did Mike do? Well

he didn't do too bad
really I'm knackered.

so here we go now I'm used to doing some
high speed driving but this is all about

going sideways which normally
means you're doing it wrong.

got a brilliant stop.
I'm very heavy on the throttle there.

keep it understeer for me.

a lot harder going sideways than I thought.

it's really struggling.

the idea is to try and
keep close to the cones.

there we go let's dip the clutch again.

this man has a seriously heavy right foot.

all over the place now that intercooler's
gonna be working overtime here.

oh well I think that
will have to call it a day.

okay then Steve put us out of our misery
which one of us two is the best dr*fter?

well Mike out of ten
you scored six. Whoa not

bad that's not bad mate
two-thirds of the way

there we're done. Ed
you scored three. Oh yes

that is quite poor
wasn't my final start I

kind of expected that
but well done. I'm the

Wheeler Dealing Drifting
Champion that's fantastic

thanks Steve. No worries
mate. Now the margins

are pretty tight on this
motor and I really don't.

want to drop the
price on our drift car at

all. I've had quite a
bit of interest at four

and a half thousand
pounds and I feel pretty

confident that I can
get top dollar. Now the

guy behind me Alex he likes the way the car
drives and the way it's set up let's see if

I can do a deal. You're giving it a proper
once over ain't you Alex? Well you gotta

I suppose you have but
trust me it's such a proper

car it's so fast what
were that intercooler and

it looks the part what
were the spoiler and

the lovely wheels and I
think worth every penny

and a four and a half thousand pound I want
for it. Yeah yeah but you seem a reasonable

sort of geezer so
what about if I offer you

four two. Four two?
Four two yeah. I'll tell you

what just for once I've
advertised the car for

four and a half thousand
pounds and I'll take

off of you four and a
half thousand pounds this

car is worth the extra
few hundred quid just for

the grim factor alone.
Go on then. Yes you

just bought yourself a
proper Nissan Skyline.

845 pounds profit a
really sound result when

you think the car only
costs us three grand to

begin with. Well we
set out to have some fun

with this one and what
a laugh it's been. Me

and Ed we got to
grips with the drift scene

and we turned out a
tidy motor. I'll miss this

budget supercar. If you want to see more
motors being turned around in the workshop

then join us again soon
on Wheel of Dealers.
