This time on Wheeler Dealers.
We're in the driving seat
of a genuine British classic
I've just bought me
and Ed a very expensive
shed like most old
cars. It's got a few faults.
Hmm quite a few to be honest.
That does not look so good and
I think Ed may have spotted them
Probably it's got a stuffed
gearbox and an engine and we
need to replace the entire
interior. Well, not all of them
Yeah, and there is one
other thing but this car has
class style and power.
Surely we can tame this big cat
Well, I guess the only way
to find out is to fire her up.
I buy the metal Ed wields the
spanners and together we turn
rusty wrecks into shiny Classics
and sell them on for a profit.
Yes, this time we're on
the hunt for the Jaguar
Mark 2 a car from the
golden age of Jag production.
It was designed in that immortal
phrase with grace pace and space.
If you opted for the
big 3.8 engine, then you
got naught to 60 in
eight and a half seconds
and a top speed of a hundred
and twenty five miles an hour.
The Mark 2 became a byword
for 60s style and was made
even more famous by TV shows like
the Sweeney and more recently Mad Men.
But the search for a good
one promises to be tough.
I've really got my heart set on
finding us a tasty Mark 2 Jaguar
The problem is is the golf between
the cars that are available out there
There's some cars between
three and four thousand pounds
But they're absolute basket
cases needing tons of work and
at the other end of the
spectrum. There's cars for up to
In between the two and
they're extremely rare.
Jaguar made over 90,000 Mark 2 so you think
there'd be a load out there to choose from
But this car is over 50 years old now and
its biggest problem has always been rust
But if you know where to
look you can sometimes turn
up a gem. There's one car
here that has caught my eye
What's done it for me is the color.
It's like a British racing green
It says it has had plenty of
money spent on the engine
But it's the way that
he said things like this
It's straight ready to go
and she's on the button
ready to enjoy and that
does it for me plus the price
It's eight thousand pounds
and that's right at the sweet
spot where I want to be.
So let's give him a call. I
Got straight through to
the owner Andrew and
from the way described
the Jag it was clear
He knew what he was talking about.
Cheers then. Bye. Bye
Well, what a nice chap and I've really got
a clear idea about this car. It's half done
He just says the
interior is very tatty, but I
know you can get an
interior for one of these.
I definitely think this motor is worthy of
a tank of fuel. So I'm gonna go and see it.
You Andrew.
Andre do mate. Hello. Nice
to meet you on the phone. Did
yes. What a lovely looking
car. Look at the character
It's got lovely. Yeah
little bit worrying
though when you turn up
and see the bonnet open
I was checking the oil oil levels and
stuff. Yeah, no nothing wrong with it at all
It's had some work done on
the edge and quite a bit of work
It's had it's got e-type
straight ball heads. The su
carburettors are two inch
larger straight through exhaust
It sounds gorgeous and it goes lovely.
Can I hear it? Of course you can. Yes.
Fantastic. I mean it looks
stunning doesn't it that engine?
That's exactly what you want to see when
you turn up to to come and look at a motor.
Is brilliant.
Well, I've got no complaints about that
I'll tell you what, and the
bodywork is so straight
on this car. It's
lovely. I love the flanks
Very good any problems that
you can think of no structure
you sound very sound and
dry and tight under there.
My garage did pick up
there is a small hole, but
it's not structural. There's
nothing to worry about
I'll tell you what, it
looks really good under
there really good.
Yes. It's good. Nice car.
Right well inside Andrew it's
looking a bit worse for where isn't it?
Look at the seat.
They've seen some use
over the years and the
dashboard well, that's
a bit fret there as well
Seeing the Sun the Sun has got to that.
This is gonna need a complete interior.
Yeah, probably will do
yes, but all the gauges work
fine. They're all original
Smith's gauges. Lovely
It is a shame because it's
gonna need plenty of those
spent on the inside and it
doesn't match the exterior
Which is lovely. I mean,
it's rust free the bodywork
straight, but that
interior really lets it down
But in its favor, it's a lot
of money spent on things
You can't see underneath new disc
brakes all-round up rated suspension
for the handling take for a drive
and see what you think, right?
Time to put it to the test.
Well, if I had to pick my
top three British classics
then the Jaguar Mark 2 would
definitely be amongst them
the stunning lines on
the big cat are instantly.
recognizable and the sounds
coming from that 3.8 litre that reduces.
220 brake horsepower is.
Intoxicated.
Well, this whole Jag has had
plenty of performance modifications
And I'll tell you what Whoever done the
work knew what they were doing because back
in the day these Jaguars
were favorites the bank robbers
They used to use them
as their getaway cars Oh.
Not to 60 comes up
in around eight and a
half seconds very quick
indeed, but this one.
It's a lot quicker it feels.
Incredibly peppy and
it's got cracking throttle
response, but it's no good
having all that performance
If you haven't got good anchors, so
let's see if they're up to the job ready.
Oh.
Happy socket that fantastic
only they inspire real confidence.
All that there is a problem
with this gearbox is done that
Couple of times it makes
adorable noise. I reckon it's
related to the clutch pedal
because it feels very very
Spongy also, I've
noticed that wherever I go
I'm leaving a cloud of smoke
behind me is to be expected
out of a car of this age,
but it's not good so far.
Things are mounted up on this motor.
So what am I gonna do
well this car is a bit like
house, you know when
you're selling the house
You do the important
things like the kitchen
and the bathroom that
way people want to buy it
And it's the same
with this old Jaguar the
important stuff has been done. It's a great
car But I don't think it's worth a bread
So I've got a figure in
my head. I'm gonna go
back and chip him and
let's see how I get on.
Well, I gotta tell ya that makes
a fantastic noise that's lovely.
Absolutely thoroughly
enjoyed that getting down
the road. Yeah, but it
has got his problems
So he's gonna need some
money spent on it. So with
that in mind you want it
how much eight grand grand?
Yes, it's just too much money
for it to be honest man offer.
I'll tell you what, I'll
give you six grand for it.
No, I won't take six.
What would you take for it?
7,000 pounds. No, come on.
I'll tell you what, I'll give you.
Six and a half grand for it. And that
is a fair shot. I couldn't do it for that
I mean I've dropped I
dropped from my 66 no.
67 no a little bit more.
This would be my last and
final offer if you
don't take it. I'm out of
here 6,800 pound old
at your end. Come on.
Go on. Yes.
I just bought myself a Mark to Jag.
So I bagged a big cat it looks amazing
But I know there's a lot
for it to do to make it really
per under the bonnet and
with an old English classic
You're pretty much guaranteed
to run into a few unexpected
problems, too So buckle up
this could be a bumpy ride.
If like me you love your beat Jaguar
saloons then here's a real treat my.
1961 3.8 Bridges racing green Mark 2
Whato, I've just purchased
a Mark 2 from that wonderful
British automobile
manufacturer Jaguar tickety-boo.
I.
Stare it out over this big bonnet
is giving me a massive thrill.
You can certainly feel that uprated
power and you can hear it, too.
That's gorgeous, isn't it blossom
out for those twin pipes at the back.
Thing is everywhere.
I go people are pointing and staring at me
I think they're looking at that big
blue haze that I'm leaving out of back
Pinning my hopes that it's
a faulty oil breather pipe if
it's not I've just bought me
an ed a very expensive shed.
The Mark 2 is one of
those rare cars designed
by the bloke who actually
owned the company.
So William lines or build to his
mate started life with a small firm
Producing motorcycle
sidecars until he went
on to create a luxury
world-beating car brand
Now he designed this
very car and to prove it
wasn't a one-off. He also did
the much-loved xj6 What's a guy?
You know a mint condition
Mark 2 Jaguar you could
almost name your own
price 60 70 believe it or not
80,000 pounds, but
every nut and grommet and
panel has to be spot
on them to be honest
with you That's not
really my kind of classic
I like the car that you
can refer your mates in the
back and not worry too
much if it's left out in the rain
I reckon once this car is finished.
It won't spend its life sitting in an
Air-conditioned garage under
a heated cloth. No, it's gonna
be a classic car that
you can enjoy it every
single day I just hope
it will enjoy it, too.
What do you think of that then a That
is very very classy work. Well done me a
Jag Mark 2. I mean, it's
an awesome getaway car
Obviously, it's a fantastic
gentleman's motor and it's
looking in really good condition.
So is the bodywork. Okay?
Yeah, the bodywork is
absolutely split clean. No rust
on it. I love the color then
just listen to this engine.
Oh.
That does sound fantastic
But that doesn't look so good that
doesn't look good down the back
But the engines have plenty
of performance modifications
done to it and I'll explain
what's going on down the okay
Cuz this is I have to say I mean
I reckon that's probably rings
I reckon it's just a blocked
pipe like a breather or
something because the
engine in this car is so strong
It's really powerful. It sounds fantastic.
It doesn't rattle and it doesn't grow.
It's possible it's
that but I have to say
I'm very nervous that
this engine is stuffed.
Oh, don't say that But I will tell you
with the amount of smoke that comes out
about the only thing that's
green about this car is the color.
Turn it off have a look at the interior.
Okay. Oh Look at the state of this.
There's no way that I can fix these.
Yeah, these are gonna have to be replaced
You just can't repair them
and all the foams gone the
leathers gone the wood
the dashboard is a nightmare
I agree with you Ed on
all points. Yeah, the interior
this car is a bit of a mess.
I've got a funny feeling mr
Brewer is gonna have to go and find a
complete interior for a Jaguar Mark, too
But just think about it
and if we was to change
the interior what a difference it
makes in a motor All right. So what else?
Why did you think you
was gonna get off likely.
No, it doesn't know there is
another problem and it's the gearbox.
Don't panic. It might not necessarily be
the whole gearbox more like the clutch
That's because between
first and second gear
It's got a crunch but
not between third and
fourth and the clutch
pedal is rather spongy
So I reckon it's there in the system
and it'd be a cylinder or something
So we're actually saying is
probably it's got a stuffed gearbox
and an engine and we need
to replace the entire interior
Yeah, and there is one
other thing. The owner
did confess to a small
hole. It's not structural
It's not in the chassis. It's in the
floor pan. So you'll be a welding
Why should you pay for this
six thousand eight hundred
pound a complete bargain.
Should we get it in the workshop?
Yes, you owe me a tea.
What a great thing to have in the workshop
I've been a fan of these
cars for ages and I can't wait
to get stuck in and what
better place to start than
With the blue smoke that made such an
impact when Mike turned up at the workshop
So my first job is to get
busy under the bonnet.
My investigations now will
tell us whether the Jag will
be a profitable success or
a costly error for Mike and I.
Now that is a beautiful looking engine
but it does have some real troubles
When you accelerate
hard or even just rev it
a bit a whole lot of blue
smoke comes out now
It could be down to maybe
worn piston rings or perhaps
cylinder head damage or
even a raft of other expensive
Fixes but Mike is
convinced. It's just one thing
and that is the
crankcase oil breather pipe
Now, let's pray that it is
because that is a cheap fix.
Every time the Pistons
go down and this fantastic
straight six engine they
create pressure in the crankcase
Which is the part of the
engine sort of down there
Now this pressure is vented
from the housing on the
front of the engine all
the way down into this
catch can So in the
bowels of the engine Bay
Now the idea is that is a safety
device and the point is that
Basically any crowd or oil that's
coming out of the engine from
time to time is caught in there
rather than being spilled onto
The road which of course would
make it slippery and dangerous
Now the rather worrying
thing is is actually full to
the brim with this kind of
rather nasty looking material
And in fact if I pull
out the hose that feeds
it that is also looking really rather
disgusting It's all rather worrying.
This whole system from
the front of the engine all
the way to the catch can
looks very dirty and oily.
If the catch can is full of crud, then
perhaps the feeder pipe is blocked, too.
And if the engine can't vent
into the can any oily deposits
being forced back into the straight
six will burn off as blue smoke.
I'm Going to strip off the front housing
which connects to the crankcase
breather pipe to see if the filter
on the front is doing its job properly.
So under the top cover is a kind of gauze
Filter which does look
pretty much as mucky as the
cover itself. I just get a
torch and have a look.
You see you can actually
barely see through the filter itself
Which gives you an idea of
how hard it would be to vent
all those gases and that
basic pressure in the crankcase.
So if you can't go out through
the filter and then through
the pipe into the catch
can it's got to go somewhere
So of course then it forces
its way past the oil control rings
and the piston rings ends
up in the cylinders themselves.
And of course ends up
getting burnt which is why
you get these blue puffs
of smoke on acceleration.
So I think actually Mike was
probably onto something and the
question is whether a good cleanup
of this will clean up our problem.
Now This is a clever bit
of kit basically it's a cleaner
It's a good top tip to rather
than just throw away old parts
You could otherwise just
clean especially on cars
this old. You might not
be able to get replacements
So by cleaning it you're gonna
not only save yourself some
money. But also you help
save the environment as well.
This degreasing machine
helps me pump detergents
at high pressure
straight at these parts
Stripping them of all oily deposits and
making them look really as good as new.
Leaving parts in cleaning
fluid overnight and using
old-fashioned elbow
grease will also do the job.
Well, look at that. It's so
clean. It's as good as new
and if I show you the torch through
the gauze gasket You can see.
That filter is now ready for thousands
and thousands more miles again. I
Replaced the gasket on
the front of the crankcase
and then the housing
bolts straight back on.
Now this old rubber breather hose
is nothing like what should have
been fitted to the car
and now it's probably also
blocked full of Gunk,
so it really has to go.
I've removed the catch can
at the same time and just look
at what comes out when I emptied
into a special tray for safe disposal.
I Clean the catch can.
That's rather filthy and this.
Is exactly the right kind of
replacement pipe we need
It's exactly what would have
been fitted to this car originally
Mustn't forget the Jubilee
clip pop that in there.
Wonderful Alex much better already.
Now all this work I'm doing
will definitely bring benefits
But I'm not a hundred
percent sure it will cure the
whole of our blue smoke
problem, but fingers crossed.
Well, there's no sign of
any blue smoke yet the
engine seems to be
running nice and cleanly.
I'm letting it run slowly
longer to get it really warmed
up, but it would seem
that that fix is actually
worked So it's a bit of
a relief a nice cheap fix.
Our.
Jaguar looks great on the outside,
but inside it's a real mess finding
a decent second-hand interior
hasn't been as easy as I thought.
But this scrapyard is a
real rabbit Warren of parts.
How you doing you're
right you in I'm indeed
in a day mate I spoke
to you on the phone.
I need parts my lovely classic
Mark to Jaguar. That's right. Yeah
looking around it doesn't look
like you do many classic parts
not particularly knows
normally from about 1995 to.
2008 current something like that, right?
Well, I need the bits for my Mark to
The trade in second-hand
modern Jaguar parts is well
established because owners can
save a fortune a good second-hand
Set of alloys for 700 versus
3000 pounds for new parts.
Occasionally dealers get offered parts for
much older cars like ours, but it's rare.
With interiors most classic
Jag drivers send their seats to an
upholsterers for a retrim, but
it will cost a grand minimum.
If you've got a broken
Jaguar you are the man to
come and see oh, yeah,
definitely and here the seats
Oh lovely, didn't they very
nice condition now and the real
ones are downstairs. They're
complete set black leather as well
Yeah, because see I was
thinking about that in the
car. It's green right whites
would look stupid creamer
Look ridiculous and red.
Yeah blacks perfect with a green
car. They are lovely. Very
very nice indeed and the wood.
That's very good condition
as well. That is lovely.
Look at that guys. Like it's off a yacht.
It's beautiful Yeah, very very nice indeed.
Now I'm interested in all
of that. Basically. I need all
the woods and I need to cease
including those bench seats
Yeah, how much does it all come to the
seats of 350 and the woods for 40 really?
Well, I know to replace the
wood in that Jaguar cost you
about 1,500 quid expensive
and to reupholster these seats
Well, the sky's the limit so that
comes to what's 790 pounds.
That's it. I think that's a
deal. Well done. Thank you.
So I found a replacement
interior which does the job
and hasn't quite broken
the bank when it's finished
I'm hoping to sell our
Mark 2 for up to 10 grand
But nobody's gonna spend
that on a cart with a spongy
clutch and crunchy gears the success of
our restoration Still hangs in the balance.
Our Jaguar Mark 2 looks
great standing still and now it
also turns heads for all
the right reasons on the road
And has managed to sort
out the smoky engine fault
with a clever and cheap
fix but with British classics
There's always more
trouble around the corner.
So can he do the same
for the dodgy gear change.
Now I might love driving
the Jag but one thing that
put a downer on his test
drive was the clutch action
he basically had trouble
trying to get gears and
also felt that the clutch
seemed a bit spongy and
Having a go myself. I
can kind of see what he
means this clutch
system needs an overhaul.
Now while I floored the
clutch just now I actually
operated a lever which in turn
was attached to a rod on the
End of which was a piston
which is inside a cylinder
which basically pushed
on some hydraulic fluid
That's gets transferred
through this pipe work
There's a little flexible one here
down onto the sl*ve cylinder which
of course operates the clutch so
you can change gear now looking.
At this master cylinder it does
seem quite old It's a little bit corroded
But there's no obvious
signs of any leaks or
any way that air could get into the
system But also checking the fluid itself
Is quite tricky from here.
It does look a little bit discolored
I guess if it's old enough it
could have some water in it
Which means it could be a
little bit more compressible
But there's no obvious
signs of anything that would
make the clutch spongy
from this side at least.
We're using my inspection I can actually
see quite easily the sl*ve cylinder
bolted to the side of the
bellhousing of the gearbox.
And straight away you can notice
and actually it's quite corroded
Which is kind of obvious
because it's going to be in the
path of all the salt and
the water coming off the
road Surface I'm not
really bothered about that
What I am bothered about is
actually there's some fluid that
seems to be leaking from the rubber
seal on the end of the sl*ve And that means
If brake fluid is actually
leaking out of that then
of course air can be
drawn back into the system
Now the hydraulic fluid of
course isn't compressible
But the air is which could
account for the slightly spongy pedal
But of course also if you're
getting a spongy pedal
then it means you're not
going to get the full motion
The movement of the
clutch which is why perhaps
the gears are difficult
to get selected.
Now I could probably get away with a fast
fix and just replace the sl*ve cylinder
But I think this car deserves
a proper system overhaul.
Parts for a Mark 2 jag are
actually quite easy to get hold of
So I've decided to replace
not only the sl*ve cylinder
But also the rather old
looking master cylinder that
way we should guarantee
a working clutch system.
Now I've managed to get hold
of these new parts and actually
quite good value for money at just
under 200 pounds for the pair very shiny.
This device helps me drain
the fluid from the system
I'm, just letting gravity
do the work but connected
to an airline this device
can also create a vacuum.
Now brake fluid is pretty
nasty so take my advice and
get it recycled properly
at your local council dump.
With the system empty I
can free off the sl*ve cylinder.
Access is good and the
part comes away easily.
Well, there we go one sl*ve cylinder
You can see it is actually quite corroded
And also there's lots of brake
fluid oozing out of the seal
at the end there Now if you
took this to a garage to do it
It's probably going to take them maybe
an hour and a half to do the whole job
And I reckon they probably charge you about
100 pounds or so probably minimum to do it
So it's actually quite a nice
saving and it's easy to do.
A bit of grease on the end of the
rod helps the new part bed in and seal.
Once the hydraulic pipes
are connected and the housing
is firmly mounted then the
sl*ve cylinder is good to go.
I've been under the jag for 30 minutes
and now it's time to get back up top.
So all I have to do
now is just free off this
master cylinder and then
replace it with this one.
Access for the master cylinder
is much harder than for the sl*ve.
There's a lot of pipe
work and other parts in the
way, but eventually with
a bit of jiggling it's free.
The new part is a straight
swap many key components
for the Mark II are still
made and as classics
go It's quite an easy
car to keep on the road
There are several great owners
clubs for this model and they can usually
tell you where to find that essential
castellated nut or splined grommet.
I've now filled up our
reservoir for our clutch
master cylinder with
dot 4 hydraulic fluid
And of course, it's right
up to the brim because
we're now going to have
to bleed out all of the air
Otherwise, it won't work properly.
I'll do that with the help of Paul
But actually it should
be quite easy because it's
pretty much going to
gravity bleed itself anyway.
Airtight and leak-free our
rebuilt clutch system will
hugely improve the driving
experience behind the wheel.
Ed, how you doing? All
right, sir. All right, mate. How's
my little slice of england?
I'm not talking about you, mr
C i'm talking about our lovely classic
big cat. How's the Mark II doing?
Well, I've given the engine
a real workover and you were
kind of right about that
blue smoke oil breather pipe
It's a bit more complicated
than that, but that's
all sorted anyway now
and as is that spongy clutch
So I've fixed the system all the way from
the pedal all the way down to the gearbox
Fantastic. Now we've
got a nice strong motor.
I knew this had the
fundamentals of a great car
It's got a lovely chassis strong
bodywork and that cracking
interior. No way. It's an
absolute disaster in there
What are you talking about?
I know ed. Don't worry
I've been working too I've been out and
I've sourced us another replacement interior
Including better leather
seats got the wood inserts for
the doors. It's going to be
half a morning's fit for you
It arrives tomorrow it's going
to be a complete mission.
What are you talking about? It's
just a few bolts No, it's not just a few.
Parts all the little bits a few screws
No, there's not there's
hundreds and you're going to have
to take all these little
bits out to get to other bits
There's a head lining as well.
That's going to be a nightmare.
I've been putting this
off but the time has come
i'm going to have to
deal with this interior
The wood is in a right state
all the varnish is missing the
veneers peeling off the
leather seats all ripped and torn
I think we might just about get away
with giving the carpet a bit of a brush up
But in reality, I am
looking at many hours of
work and it's all going
to start with a strip out.
I'm starting by unscrewing
all the woodwork. This car is
basically a mobile tree everywhere
you look there's walnut veneer.
That was actually a lot
easier to remove than I was
expecting I had a nut to
undo there another one there
And of course they may have
to recycle this little bulb here
But i'm quite glad to get a shot of this
because actually it's in quite a poor state
And I don't think really
be that easy to restore
Now the other bits I've
got to undo are just going to
be the tops of the door cards
and they're held down by.
A couple of screws
hopefully once they're off
should be easy to remove
but on this kind of job
You just never know about that
little secret screw. So just rather
than wrenching them just tease
them away just to be absolutely sure.
Now a proper wood kit for
the whole interior on this car
comes in at 1500 pounds
and yes, that is second hand.
Thankfully we can get
away with just replacing
the dashboard top
and the door cappings.
I do like this interior.
It's kind of got that lovely
oldie English kind of
gentleman's club feel about it
And of course the Mark
II came from a time in
British design when really
we were just world leaders
But unfortunately five decades
of use and obviously misuse
these seats are just really
only fit for the scrap heap.
The seats are bolted in
and they're easy to strip out.
But once out they reveal
the true horror of the carpets.
Thankfully, they're a
dark color if they were red
or blue then we'd probably
have to replace them.
But with some very careful
vacuuming they do come up quite well.
After what Mike spent
on the replacement interior
We need to keep the
spend low on this car and
any money I save now means a bigger
profit Hopefully when we sell the jag on.
Well, all the stripping out is now done
So now it's time for some new
leather or at least second-hand
leather clearly these seats
have been around quite a while
But despite that we've only
got a few little marks and nicks
And in fact if our old seats
had been just slightly better
We probably could have
repaired them restore them
maybe even give them a
nice coat of new leather paint
But these ones are so good.
They don't even need that.
An interior refit is
something you can tackle on
your own you need
Patience and a basic toolkit.
A garage would probably charge
you a couple of hundred quid for
swapping the interior out. So
a good saving on a restoration.
The new black seats look stunning
it's taken 30 years off the interior.
Well things are going
well the leather is in
the car so now it's time
for the wood cappings
Now if you compare the stuff that
came out of the car with the new bits
That might manage to
get hold of you can see
they're going to completely
transform our interior.
Now if you're going to take second-hand
trim from another car then take care
Subtle spec changes
over the years might mean
that parts have different
fittings and screw holes
Take my advice a bit of research
now can save a lot of hassle later.
Now we're not actually
changing this piece of wood here
But if we were then we'd
be taking out the dials now
Of course, it might seem
really obvious where all the
wires connect to on the
back of each of those dials
But it might be a while before you start
putting everything back together again
So a classic top tip is to
label all of those connections
So that way when it does
go back together again, you
make sure you're going
to get it right first time.
Okay, so this interior
is finally getting there
the seats look great the
wood is absolute class.
I've got a few more little bits and pieces
to do but all of this work is completely
Transforming our car because
before this interior was letting
the side down but now it's one
of the best aspects of the car.
The interior is almost
finished and the car will be
ready for sale soon But
there's still one job to tackle.
The underside which needs some welding.
Mike told me it was a
small hole, but I know old
British classics. I'm
preparing for the worst.
The transformation of our
big Jaguar from flawed feline to
cool cat is almost done We're
on the last leg of our journey
But the car's up on the
ramp and with a British classic
that usually means
there'll be rust to deal with.
Mike was telling me that the
seller of this car was particularly
honest and had mentioned a
bit of a hole underneath the car
Somewhere that needed
a bit of welding well.
I've given the body and the chassis under
here the once over and I can't find a thing
I'm not disappointed
because obviously that means
that the underside of our
car is in tip-top condition
However, and of
course you knew this was
coming. I did find a
hole in the exhaust now
I didn't think that the
exhaust system did sound a
little bit too rorty and the
reason for that is there.
You can see that the
metal here is pushed into the
exhaust pipe potentially
restricting its efficiency
So i'm going to heat it up with my
oxyacetylene torch to around 800 degrees
And then tease it back into
shape before I start my welding fix.
Now if you end up having
to heat some metal just
to get a little bit softer
a bit more malleable
And using something
like this the hottest
part of the flame is
actually on the very tip.
Of that kind of light blue bit just there
There's no point stuffing it in like that.
You need to do right on the very edge
And you'll find that it'll heat
up the quickest that way.
Now having had a chance
to look at this damage closely
I reckon it's been caused
either by the car driving
over some debris left
in the road or perhaps.
Maybe it's got beached on
something or it's hit a curb
But because the metal
has been pushed into the
exhaust pipe, of course if
I was just to patch that up
I'd run the risk of actually restricting
the exhaust flow which would not be cool
So what I've done is I
actually pulled the metal out
and then flattened it
back off again ready for
welding Now before I
can do any of that welding
I need to just clean up
the area and get rid of
all this kind of old metal
and oxidized material.
I'm grinding back the surface
material with this flap disc
It's a softer pad which lets
me prepare the area without
cutting too deeply into
the surface of the mild steel.
Before I can begin my weld
I've disconnected the battery.
Then I need to find a good
earth somewhere on the
car which I can clip onto
and we're ready to go.
I'm wearing a solar-powered welding mask
It's essential as if you look
at the arc light from a weld
with the naked eye you can
easily cause permanent damage.
Well, that's gone well I've been
welding this exhaust pipe up
It's actually quite lucky that
it's not even slightly corroded
because otherwise sometimes it
blows through and can be a real pain
I'm using a mig welder but equally
you could do this with oxyacetylene.
If you've got the hand to be fair
mig is probably the easiest to master.
Top tip when grinding back an area of weld
I prefer to use a flap
disc rather than a grinding
stone as it leaves a much
neater less rough finish.
Well, I've just ground off
the worst of the weld to be fair
I didn't really have to
do it because of course
nobody's going to see
it's underneath the carbon
It's always good to
leave a nice neat job.
The weld is good and sound but has it made
a difference to that rorty exhaust note.
Come on then come on then.
Well, it's definitely running cleaner
and sweeter just the right side of sporty
But that's it for our big
cat and looking back at
all the care and
attention I've lavished on
this car I would
certainly say it's worth it.
At last the Jaguar is finished and
i'm very proud of what we've achieved
One of the world's favorite
saloon cars taken from
a rolling project to a
fully finished renovation.
As soon as I saw this Mark II I
knew it had the makings of a good car
But the deal was a hard
one this would be my last and
final office six thousand
eight hundred pound come on
Go on. Yes. I took a
massive gamble in my
hunch about a blue
smoke pouring from the car
Thankfully I was right and a block
crankcase breather pipe was the culprit.
The clutch had a problem.
Ed replaced both sl*ve and
master cylinders and now the
car changes gear cleanly
and the clutch action is sweet.
That interior was a major flaw All the
varnish is missing the veneers peeling off
the leather seats all ripped
and torn but a few hours
Okay a day's work and ed had
turned it around and it's looking good.
Finally, he found a
hole in the downpipe. He
welded it up and improved
the raucous exhaust note.
We've turned the Mark II around but the
cost did mount up what was the final score.
Well, I reckon I bought
the car under market
price and all the engine
parts came in good value
But the interior cost seven hundred
and ninety pounds pushing the
final tally up to seven thousand
eight hundred and four pounds
But I reckon there's still good
money in this for me and ed.
Ed how you doing? I'm
doing very well. She's all
finished. What do you think?
Oh, she's lovely, isn't she?
I've always loved our
Mark 2 jag, but look at it now
and you got my interior
because that looks fantastic
Well, it looks fantastic
because all the time and effort
I've spent on it. Well,
I've got to tell you Edward
It was time and money well
spent because now the interior
matches the exterior and
our Mark 2 is ready for sale
Well before we sell it, can
we not take it for a bit of
a cruise? Hmm a cruise
Yeah, I've got the perfect place.
Look at this today.
Oxford dream inspires a classic Mark
2 Jack any guesses warrior. Not really
Well, maybe this will give you a clue.
You're ready. Okay
Beep beep beep beep beep
beep Was that morse code correct?
Morse code because we're
here to celebrate a fictional
character who probably did
the most to promote this fantastic
Classic car the massively successful
TV detective inspect the morse. I see
So we're taking a nice
little tour around the spiritual
home of perhaps one of the
most famous Mark 2 drivers
So what were you just typing out in your
morse code? Well, you're driving, right?
You've got a serum in your head
I was tapping out the international
distress call save ourselves
sos. Well, thank you very much.
Give it a little rev sit we turn
some heads look at all look at us.
And it's hardly that kind of quiet
refined Mark 2 of inspector morse
Because it does have a
little bit of legs on this motor
Can go rather quickly but not in
these tiny old streets these little lanes
But I have to say i'm quite
chuffed that I fixed that clutch.
Because of course driving
around these twisty streets. I'm
having to heel toe it quite
a bit and i'm quite pleased
I'm sitting in the passenger
seat because I'll tell
you what what you've
done in here. It's fantastic
What were these leather seats?
There's lovely wood that we've
reinstated in the car. It feels like
a gentleman's club very classy.
Well our time in the Jaguar and
inspector morse's city is coming to a close
And like any good thriller
i'd like to know the ending.
So are we going to make
a k*lling with this car?
I think there's a few
more twists and turns in
the plot before we
finally get this one sold out
Because i'm rame high with this car.
I want to go for about 10 grand.
Okay, well, it doesn't
take a detective to work out
That's going to mean
we're going to get quite a
decent profit a fitting end
to our magnificent motor
Absolutely now take me home Lewis Lewis.
Hang on i'm the brains of the operation.
There's Batman and Robin
right? There's morse and there's
Lewis. It's as simple as that
now take me home Robin.
I've advertised our beautiful
Mark ii Jaguar in all the right
places and the good news
is it's created a bit of a buzz
Now this chap behind me is called
Dave and I think he's pretty serious
He's traveled overnight
from the north of england
and guess what he's
bought a trailer with him
now Let's see if I can
put a deal together.
So then Dave what do
you think it's beautiful
Mike lovely leather the
wood the color really nice
I'm, glad you like the
interior. We spent quite
a bit of time in there
getting it just right
We've changed the wood. We've changed the
leather on the seats and I'll tell you what
He's transformed the interior
and it's given it a new lease of life.
So the question is do you want to buy it
I want to buy it Mike if the price is right
Well, the price is always
right as far as i'm concerned.
I've advertised it for ten thousand
pounds and I think it's worth
every penny of that
money because wherever
you go in this car It's
going to bring you joy
It would give me a lot more joy if I could
have it for eight and a half thousand.
Eight and a half thousand pounds.
Yeah, that is northern cheek, isn't it?
Um, I couldn't let it go for that
because it's such a nice car.
I'd reduce it down to nine and a half
thousand pound for you. How does that sound?
Nine is about me limit.
I would have liked a mechanic
to come along and had a look at it
Just to put my mind
at rest with that in mind.
I'll be prepared to push
myself to nine thousand
Yeah, I can understand that but trust me.
This is a good car
And if anything goes wrong with it
You can bring it back here and I'll get my
mechanic to sort it out
for you and I will accept
Your offer of nine grand have
we got a deal deal top work.
You just bought yourself a Mark 2 jag.
Thank you.
Well, it was lucky I
sealed that deal because
the rain came in seconds
after we shook on it
But i'm not letting it dampen my mood
because me and ed have landed a credible.
1196 pound profit on this old jag
We'll be sad to see it go, but i'm
already thinking of our next buy
Well, we've had a wonderful
journey with our beautiful
Jaguar Mark 2. I found a
car that was down on its heels
We've run it through the
workshop and we've turned it around
and we've had a couple of
quid profit and that's not bad
If you want to see more
classic cars getting the once over
from me and ed then join us
again soon on Wheeler dealers Tala.
