and she wasn't going

She probably had
a list of girls
that she went out
on a hunt for
every single day
to make their lives
absolutely miserable.

She was hanging out
with the wrong people.
She was preyed upon.
[Amanda Richards speaking]
[Det. Brian Martin]
No one could foresee
what was going to happen.
This was much more
than just a girl fight.
We were terrible b*tches
to each other
but she was still
my friend.
[siren blaring]
[police talking over radio]
[Det. Martin] Shortly before
11:00 p.m.,
the Fort Wayne
Police Department
and Fire and Ambulance
responded to a 911 call
at Guthrie St.
District officers
had previously responded
to this address,
hours before
and it was a small party
where there was loud music
and a neighbor had called
because they were annoyed
by the young people
who had gathered.
[Jamie] And the party
should have been
broken up
but it wasn't.
So now, let's fast forward
to 90 minutes later.
[Det. Martin]
The police department
and medics arrive
and they found
a young lady
in the driveway.
She was bleeding
from the chest.
She was rushed
to the Trauma Center
in Fort Wayne
to be treated for,
what turned out to be,
life-threatening injuries.
[Jamie] Fort Wayne
is definitely
like an all-American
type of your hometown.
And we do your Friday
Night Lights here.
Baseball, football.
[narrator] In 2002,
Wayne High School
could be ripped from
any classic teen movie.
I would say our high school
had a lot of cliques.
I feel like it's the same
everywhere in
the United States.
You had, like,
the stoner kids,
the skaters.
Your goth kids.
You had the preppy kids
that wore, you know,
Abercrombie & Fitch,
Aéropostale,
American Eagle,
that type of thing.
[Jamie Duffy]
And in any kind
of high school,
there are always
mean girls.
We made some
good memories.
We didn't always
make smart decisions.
[narrator]
In the Wayne High
social hierarchy,
junior Stacy DeGrandchamp
is at the top
of the pyramid.
[Sara] Stacy,
in high school,
belonged with
the preppy kids.
She liked being
a part of that group.
She loved her name brands
and things like that.
She was always dressed
so cute, too.
[Jamie] Stacy loved
volleyball,
loved to play volleyball.
She had a very, like,
goofy, outgoing personality.
Stacy would frequently
trip over her feet,
trying to get to the ball
and she just
laughed it off
and she just had
the great attitude.
[Jamie] Stacy grew up
as an only child.
Her mom was
a single mom
and her mom
and my mom are twins.
And we always
grew up together.
She lived one street
down from me.
[Sara] She was so
confident and beautiful.
I mean, it was almost, like,
looking at a movie star.
You were just like...
[gasps] You know?
[narrator] But being
a pretty, popular girl
comes with its downsides.
[Rachel]
I feel that
sometimes she was
too harshly judged
by girls.
I know this sounds like
such a cliché
but she was so
beautiful that
a lot of girls
were envious.
[narrator]
Some might call her
a "Goody two-shoes."
Then, in the spring
of 2002,
Stacy meets
high school grad
Brandon Muff
at a house party.
[Det. Martin]
Brandon was approximately
20 years old
and Stacy at age 17,
I think she was, kind of,
drawn to the older guy.
Maybe that was
a cool thing to do.
Brandon was a bad boy.
[Duffy] Sometimes,
you know,
if what you're known
is a good girl,
you want to
break out of that
a little bit.
[Sara] I just knew
it was a boy
that was a bit older
than us
that Stacy was dating
and she was head
over heels.
All of a sudden,
Stacy wasn't around.
Stacy was hanging out
with the group
that was associated
with Brandon.
[narrator]
That group includes
high school party girls,
Amanda Richards
and Whitney McGehee.
The part spot was wherever
somebody's parents
were not going to be at.
Or wherever they were
going to let us
take over their house.
[narrator] The group
often ends up
at 16-year-old
Holly Boisvert's house,
a queen bee in
the neighborhood
party scene.
[Whitney] Holly had
a pool at her house
and her dad would let us
go swimming,
hang out, do whatever.
I mean, we could have
30 kids at their house
and her dad
would have been
okay with it.
[Jamie] I know that Holly,
Whitney and Amanda
were all
pretty good friends
and I believe that
they were all friends
with Brandon.
Amanda was a little bit
more quieter
and Holly wanted to be
the head of the trio.
[Whitney] Holly could
come off as a bully,
or a mean girl, yes,
and if you didn't know
how to take her
or understand that, yeah.
But she was fun
to be around.
I think that's why
we all hung out with her.
[narrator]
As Brandon's girlfriend,
Stacy becomes
an official member
of the party crowd.
But turns out,
there's friction
between Stacy and Holly
that dates back
to middle school.
[Jamie] There was a time
when Stacy was
in eighth grade
and they all went over
to Holly's house.
Stacy had her feet
in the water
and Holly made fun
of the way
that she was splashing.
"You are prancing
around like a little
effing princess."
Something to that effect
was said
and in front
of everybody else
and, so, of course,
everybody laughed.
So Stacy got up
and left the pool party.
[Whitney] Holly was rough
and tough
and she wasn't
going to take anything
from nobody.
[narrator] By the time
Stacy enters Wayne High,
she and Holly seem to have
buried the hatchet.
Holly and Stacy both had
really strong attitudes,
really strong personalities.
[Natasha Cole]
I think that Stacy
and Holly were cordial,
they had mutual friends,
but I don't think
that she really paid
much attention to Holly.
[narrator]
But Stacy's recent
addition to their group
touches a nerve for Holly.
[Jamie] Holly dated Brandon
before Stacy dated Brandon.
Brandon and Holly
were a thing
in the past.
But now, her and Brandon
are just friends.
[Jamie] And I think
that Holly thought
that she and Brandon
would get back together.
[Natasha] I absolutely
think that
Holly was jealous
of Stacy.
She's beautiful
and she has a great
sense of humor
and she was dating Brandon.
[narrator] Once again,
there's friction between
Holly and Stacy,
but this time,
Stacy's not walking away.
Stacy felt that Holly
was more aggressive
and she brought
all this animosity
towards Stacy
and Stacy's just like,
"Why are you coming to me,
you know, when I'm
his girlfriend now?
You need to just
step back."
[Whitney] I don't
think Stacy
would have cared enough
about Holly
to want to fight her.
But if Holly is going
to come at Stacy
and try to fight her,
Stacy's not going to
back down
and Stacy is going
to stand her ground.
There was a conflict
of interest.
I was friends with
both of them.
They were both
my very good friends.
Now there was a boy
in between them
and, then, my friendships
with them.
Holly had just
expressed to me that
she didn't like Stacy,
and Stacy, pretty much,
didn't like Holly.
[narrator] These two
were headed for a fight
and only one
will walk away.
They were pitted
against each other,
it almost seemed like,
the moment
that they even knew
of the other's existence.
[narrator] But soon,
Holly's not the only one
who has a beef
with Stacy.
Then, me and Stacy
got into a fight.
[Det. Martin] Whitney felt
that Stacy was talking
behind her back,
which, ultimately, led to
just your high school,
petty backstabbing.
[Whitney] I think there was
a miscommunication
on something that
was said
behind my back
to my ex-boyfriend.
Apparently, Stacy
caused embarrassment
by inferring that
Whitney was pining
after this boy.
It was something silly
that got out of hand.
Whitney had a
lot of anger
towards Stacy.
[narrator] And Holly
was there to stir the pot.
[Natasha] I think that
Holly was also jealous
of the friendship
between Whitney and Stacy.
And she would have
been happy
if there was any
beef between
their mutual friends.
[Jamie] It's probably
Holly putting
imaginary daggers
in Stacy's back, meaning,
spreading rumors that
probably are not true
about what Stacy said
or didn't say.
[Duffy] Rumors and
hurt feelings
and gossip and things
like that
are the main tools
that mean girls use.
[telephone beep]
[Whitney talking
over phone]
[Det. Martin] I don't think
anybody truly realized
that it was going
to escalate to the point
that it escalated.
[Whitney talking
over phone]
[phone call ending]
[narrator]
High school drama
is heating up
between Whitney McGehee
and Stacy DeGrandchamp,
but it's Holly Boisvert
who is adding fuel
to the fire.
[Whitney] Holly, who was
wanting everybody
to become enemies
with Stacy.
Holly was perfectly fine
with me having
a falling out with Stacy.
[Jamie] It's one of those
things where
if I'm mad at her,
you're going to be mad
at her, too, with me
and that's just
the type of person
Holly was.
Holly was...
She was a mean girl.
She probably had a list
of girls
that she went out
on a hunt for
every single day
to make their lives
absolutely miserable
because that was
just the type
of person she was.
[Natasha] Stacy would not
put up with anything
from somebody like Holly
threatening her.
[Rachel] Stacy, she would
stick up for herself.
She wouldn't pick fights
or nothing,
but if she felt like
she needed to stick up
for herself,
she would have no problem
doing so.
[Sara] Outside looking in
to this group of friends,
that were spending
their time with Stacy,
I felt like
she was hanging out
with the wrong people.
[narrator]
By August of 2002,
Stacy had come
to the same conclusion.
[Jamie] Holly was spreading
negative words and rumors
about Stacy
just to create more
enemies for Stacy.
[Duffy] I think
the intensity
of the rumors
made her feel like
she needed to step back,
and, so, she was just
taking a break from it all
because, you know,
the mean girl thing
was just getting
out of control.
[narrator] Meanwhile,
her relationship
with Brandon
is falling apart.
[Natasha] I knew
that him and Stacy
were, kind of, like,
I don't know.
They were not
in a great place.
[Sara] Life was getting
a little bit more serious.
We were going
to be seniors.
I think that we were
trying to, you know,
think about, like,
get a little bit
ahead of the game.
[narrator] With only
a few weeks left
before the start
of senior year
at Wayne High,
Stacy makes
a big decision.
[Sara] She broke up
with Brandon
and stopped hanging out
with him.
[Jamie] Stacy was
getting ready
to go into college
and what her dreams
and her future held
and it wasn't with him.
[narrator] Stacy makes
a break from Brandon
and the clique,
except for one new bestie
she met over the summer.
Abby Oswald.
[Jamie] Abby was
good friends
with Brandon
before Stacy and Abby
even met.
So Stacy met Abby
through Brandon.
Abby and Stacy
were very close.
I'd say they had
a good friendship.
[Sara] I really
didn't know
Abby that well,
Abby Oswald.
She wasn't, like,
in with our group
of friends
as far as like
high school went,
but I did notice her
coming around more.
I just remember
being like,
"Who's this chick?"
But not real
impressed by her.
I think, even like,
a little jealous, annoyed.
That, you know, like,
"Here is this new girl
that Stacy's
hanging out with."
[Jamie] Stacy was with
Abby Oswald.
Stacy and Abby decided
that they were
going to go to
the mall together.
And she was going
to pick out her
senior picture outfit.
Later, Abby proposed
to Stacy that
they should go
to a party.
[narrator] The party's
in a run-down neighborhood
on Guthrie St.
[Natasha]
The house on Guthrie,
it was not
our normal scene.
I don't think that
that was a very safe
place to be.
[narrator] But it's where
Brandon lives
with his roommate Justin.
I believe that Brandon
had asked Abby
when they got done
shopping to come by
the Guthrie house.
I was told that Brandon
wanted Stacy back,
um, even though
that's not what
she wanted to do.
And Stacy decided
that she didn't really
want to go.
[narrator]
She's concerned
that Holly, Amanda
and Whitney
might be there.
[Jamie] But somebody
had said that
they weren't going to be
at the party.
[Duffy] Abby is
the kind of girl
that just won't take
"no" for an answer.
Abby says,
"You've got to come.
You've got to come."
Won't take a "no".
And, so, Stacy finally says,
"Yeah, why not?
I'll go to the party."
Why not?
It's just a party.
[Det. Martin]
It is approximately
9:30 in the evening,
when Abby pulls in
the driveway with Stacy,
at Justin's home
on Guthrie.
And Stacy, as she arrived
with her friend Abby, says,
"What is she doing here?"
[Natasha] I don't think
she knew
what she was walking into,
by any means.
[narrator] On a hot
summer night,
Whitney and Amanda
decide to stay clear
of the party
on Guthrie Street.
[Whitney] If our parents
found out that
we hung out there,
we would be in
really big trouble.
We were going
to hang out with
another group of friends,
me and Amanda Richards.
[narrator] But riding
with them that night
is the queen bee
of their group,
Holly Boisvert and
she does want to go
to the party.
[Whitney] I remember
driving over there
and we drop Holly off
at the house
and she was
supposed to page
when she was ready.
And if she did not page
before we left
where we were going,
then we would just
come back and pick her up.
[narrator]
Whitney and Amanda never
get a page from Holly.
So they head back
to Brandon's house
around 11:30,
to pick her up as planned.
[police talking over radio]
[Whitney] When we pull up
to the house,
there is police
and ambulance
everywhere.
The whole block
was pretty much
shut down by police.
[narrator]
Just 30 minutes earlier,
a young woman is rushed
to the hospital.
A group of teens
are gathered outside.
Abby Oswald tells detectives
what happened.
[Det. Martin]
Brandon and Holly
they were sitting on
the front porch together,
when Abby and Stacy
first pulled up.
And Stacy sees Holly
and says,
"What is she doing here?"
Holly and Stacy
have a verbal argument.
[Duffy] Within 10 minutes of
Stacy DeGrandchamp's arrival,
she and Holly are in
a shouting match together.
Eventually they are
fighting with each other.
There is hair pulling,
there is punching,
there is kicking.
They are rolling around
on the grass.
[Jamie] Holly had
every intention on
going out there
and giving Stacy
a beating,
but Stacy was beating her
pretty bad.
[Det. Martin]
Stacy was getting
the best of Holly,
to the point where
she was kicking Holly
in the head
or in the face.
[Duffy] Then,
all of a sudden,
it seems as though
Stacy is going limp
and losing her strength.
And that's when Brandon
decided to reach down
and pull Stacy away
from Holly.
[narrator]
Brandon grabs Stacy
by the ankles
and pulls her into
some recycling bins
in the yard.
Stacy gets up and staggers
down the driveway.
Abby says, "Let's get
out of here."
And as Stacy
is walking around
to the passenger's side
of the vehicle,
she collapses.
She appeared to be having
some type of seizure.
Abby runs over to her,
to try and figure out
what's wrong.
[Det. Martin]
Brandon came over
almost immediately
and pulled up
Stacy's shirt
and noticed that her bra
was saturated with blood.
[sirens blaring]
[Det. Martin]
Stacy DeGrandchamp
was put in
the back of the ambulance
and rushed to
the hospital.
I don't think anybody
at that party
realized, initially,
that Stacy was hurt
as bad as she was.
Holly and Brandon
were taken
from the scene
to the police station.
When crime scene
units arrive,
crime scene tape is up.
They began taking
photographs and
videotaping the scene.
[narrator] Since Stacy
was bleeding
from the chest,
investigators look
for weapons.
Detectives did not observe
any sharp-type objects,
knives or anything
of that type
in the backyard or driveway
of the residence
as they had presumed,
possibly, it would be
in the area
of where the girls
fought and struggled
on the ground.
They went into
the residence,
after obtaining
a search warrant,
and they took some
kitchen knives
that were laying
on the counter.
[narrator]
In the operating room
at Parkview Hospital,
doctors are working
to save Stacy's life.
[Det. Martin] She sustained
a stab wound
to the upper chest area,
in the area of her breast
and she also had
a second stab wound
to her abdomen area.
Rita, Stacy's mom,
didn't know that
something happened
to Stacy.
She gets the voice message
around 11 o'clock.
It's from Brandon.
-[telephone beeps]
-[Brandon talks on phone]
[Jamie] Rita gets
to Parkview,
Randallia Hospital
to only be approached
by the hospitalist.
She said, "Oh, you're Stacy
DeGrandchamp's mother?"
And Rita answered, "Yes,"
and they said,
"Well, unfortunately,
she's passed away."
[Sara] It breaks my heart.
Oh, sorry.
[chuckles] Sorry.
It's something
I haven't thought about it
in a long time.
[sniffling]
Oh, I can't imagine
having to go and do that
with your only child.
[sobs softly]
We had so many questions,
and no answers.
[narrator] Because the
stab wounds
appear intentional,
Fort Wayne police
open a homicide investigation.
At the station,
Holly shares
her version of events.
[Det. Martin] Holly
stated that
she had nothing
to do with, uh,
the injuries
that took place
to Stacy,
that they'd merely
gotten into an, an argument,
or a fight.
[Duffy] But, of course,
very important,
Holly said,
she had no knife.
[Det. Martin] She says
she believes that Stacy
might have fallen
on glass
in the recycling bins.
[Det. Martin] Detectives
also interviewed Brandon.
[narrator] His shirt,
stained with Stacy's blood,
has been taken
as evidence.
[no audio]
[Det. Martin] He was trying to
allude to the fact that
Stacy's injuries
being caused by
cut or broken glass,
or glass shards
that were in the
recycle bin that
she fell into.
[narrator] But Holly
and Brandon's stories
don't match up
to the evidence.
[Det. Martin] Crime scene
took photographs
of the recycle bins,
and there was
no broken glass.
There was no marks that
glass had been swept up,
There was no blood,
in our around
the recycle tubs.
It was very clear
from the coroner's report
that those injuries
were sustained,
and inflicted,
by a single edge,
sharp, bladed knife.
They were described
as knife wounds.
But the knife was
not located at the scene,
or on any potential suspects
at the time.
[narrator] Holly
and Brandon are released.
But this remains an open
homicide investigation.
On August 19th, 2002,
Stacy DeGrandchamp
is laid to rest.
She's buried in her
senior outfit
that she was supposed to do
senior pictures in.
[narrator] It's a
full house,
including Stacy's friends
from the party crowd,
Abby, Whitney,
and Amanda.
Holly Boisvert is
notably absent.
[Jamie] We had
teachers there.
She had a lot of
her classmates that came.
Coaches.
But one
person showed up
that, in my mind,
was not invited
to come to that funeral.
Brandon Muff showed up.
And, all eyes
are on him.
We couldn't believe
that he had
the guts to show up.
We felt he had something
to do with this.
[narrator]
Rumors are spreading
through Wayne High School,
that Brandon and his friends
tricked Stacy
into coming to the party,
so Holly could hurt her.
[Det. Martin] It leads
the detectives to wonder,
was this a conspiracy
to have one of the girls
eliminate the other.
I do believe that Stacy
was led into a trap.
They knew what was gonna
happen that night.
After Stacy's death,
nobody was going to
hang out with Holly.
Holly called my house.
I remember talking to her,
and in the conversation,
said, "How could
you do this?"
and she said,
"You know me,
you know I would
never do this."
And, then...
I never
talked to her again.
The rumor mill,
when school stated back up,
it was all over the place,
as far as what
took place at the party.
[Rachel] The only
common thread was
Holly stabbed her,
Holly k*lled her.
That was
the common thread.
[narrator] But another rumor
makes its way to police.
Whitney had something
to do with it.
[answer machine beeps]
For a detective to hear
a voicemail like we heard,
that was given to us
by Rita, Stacy's mother,
where somebody is saying,
"You better watch
your back",
and then,
in very, uh, short time,
that individual
is, is k*lled,
uh, it's very concerning.
[knock on door]
[Whitney] The detective
came to my house,
to interview me there.
[Det. Martin] We have to
ask her why exactly
she left this message,
and eliminate
or include her as a
potential suspect
in Stacy's homicide,
whether she had a role
of setting it up.
[Whitney] The message
was never, ever a threat,
it was...
A warning,
so that she knew to
watch out for herself,
because I knew that
Holly wanted to fight her.
So, Stacy needs to know
that Holly is mad,
because I didn't want
them to end up
at the same place,
at the same time.
[narrator] But if Whitney
was trying to keep
Holly and Stacy apart,
it appears Brandon
was actively trying to
set them on a
collision course.
[Det. Martin] Detectives
learned through Whitney,
that on August the 15th,
Brandon had called over
to Holly's house,
and said, "If you don't
come over to this party,
over on Guthrie,
then I'll never
speak to you again."
[Whitney] I thought
they were just gonna
hang out and talk,
I had no idea that
Stacy was going to
even be at the party.
[Det. Martin] So detectives
had to try to figure out
if this was some sort of
trap that was, uh,
laid out by Brandon
to get both girls
at the house to fight.
I'm sure it absolutely
hurt Brandon's ego
that Stacy broke up
with him.
Was he working to get
even with her,
maybe there was a
little bit of revenge
on his part,
in this whole affair.
[Whitney] Holly's jealousy
and Brandon's spite
is what got them
both there.
[narrator] But there is
another person who is key
in persuading Stacy
to go the party that night,
her new friend, Abby Oswald.
I think that Abby
insisting that Stacy
go to that party
is because Abby
was friends with Brandon.
From a detective's
point of view,
I wondered why
Abby would bring
her friend over to
the Guthrie St. house,
knowing that there's
a possibility
that Holly was there,
or...
As they were
pulling up, seeing Holly,
and knowing the tension,
why she didn't just say,
"Hey, now's not the time,
let's leave."
[Sara] My suspicion
at the time,
was that Abby was
a part of the...
The game plan
to get Stacy there,
to the party.
Whether that was
actually driving,
talking her into going,
I think that is the part
that Abby had played.
[narrator] But when
detectives speak to Abby,
she denies
any involvement.
Abby also said that
she was the one
who tried to
break up the fight.
[narrator] With all roads
leading back to Brandon,
detectives call in
his roommate from
Guthrie St.,
Justin Troop.
[Det. Martin] The interview
with Justin to
law enforcement
was on the 26th of August.
Justin appeared to be
a very credible witness.
According to
Justin's account,
he tried to
break the fight up,
between Stacy and Holly.
And Brandon
pushes him aside,
and says,
"No, let them fight."
It's almost as if Brandon
is enjoying the fight.
[Duffy] So, did he
set it up? Possibly.
Did Brandon intend for
any harm to come to Stacy?
That's tougher to prove,
and harder to say.
[Det. Martin] Justin was
able to tell
law enforcement
that Brandon
made the statement,
"Just tell them",
referring to the police,
that Holly didn't do
anything,
and that Stacy just fell.
It made law enforcement
very suspicious
that maybe Brandon
had more,
uh, solid information,
but was just not
bringing it forward to
law enforcement.
Whether he was afraid,
whether he was trying to
stonewall the
investigation,
or whether he was
attempting to
cover for Holly.
Brandon was, uh,
ultimately interviewed
a second time
and it was during
the course of
this interview
that Brandon refused
to give any other
information.
Brandon made the comment
to law enforcement,
to the detectives, that he,
uh, "was no snitch",
and that he did not see
Holly with a knife.
[narrator] But to many,
one thing is certain.
They fought, it's
clear as day,
that Holly did it, like,
it's clear as day.
To us, it was,
"She m*rder*d Stacy."
We-We've got our k*ller.
I thought, within
three to four months,
we would be in court,
and I would watch her,
in my mind,
get the death penalty,
you know,
like, I was going to
actually see justice.
It's normal to
think, they're going to
keep interviewing,
and they are going to
be able to find
a couple witnesses
that are willing to speak.
Just one, just one witness.
And of all these people
that were at this party
that night,
not one person was
willing to come forward
and say that
they'd seen something.
[narrator]
With no witnesses,
and no m*rder weapon,
there are no arrests made.
[Jamie] Months upon
months upon months,
no phone calls back,
then, you know,
days turn into years.
We were extremely
discouraged, I mean,
you can only imagine
after all those years
of trying to get justice,
that,
it just won't ever come.
[narrator] But sometimes,
justice comes from
the most unlikely places.
[narrator] By 2019,
students at Wayne High
have heard the story
for 17 years.
If you're mean enough,
you can get away
with m*rder.
It felt like Stacy's case
was on the backburner,
and nothing was
being done,
and nobody understood why.
[narrator] But,
Stacy's cousin
Jamie McMillen refuses
to let the case die.
She finally connects with
cold case detective,
Brian Martin.
[Det. Martin] In March
of 2019,
I received a telephone call
from Jamie McMillen.
Jamie was wanting to
speak to me about
her cousin's case.
[Jamie] When
Detective Martin
called me back,
I thought,
"Okay, this is a step
in the right direction."
Jamie believed that
if I would be able
to talk to Brandon,
Holly, Abby,
and Amanda,
that I would probably be
able to get the answers
to the questions that
we'd been looking for
all along.
There is a benefit
to the cold cases,
and interviewing witnesses.
Maybe they've gotten
older, matured,
gotten out of that lifestyle
and are more willing
to talk to us.
[narrator]
Detective Martin first
tracks down Abby Oswald.
[Det. Martin] Let me
ask you this,
-at any time, did you see
Holly with a knife?
-No.
I never saw a weapon,
that's why this is so hard
-and why I--
-You just thought
it was like a fight...
-Yes, yeah.
-...in a yard, and then
all of a sudden,
-this happens?
-Yeah, and like her mom,
we, you know,
when we were
talking after the fact,
she then wanted me to say,
"I saw a weapon", or,
"I know something".
But I can't sit here
and say, "I saw
a weapon"...
-Don't.
-..."I saw a knife",
when I didn't.
[narrator]
Detective Martin then
speaks to Brandon Muff,
who says he wishes
he saw more.
[Det. Martin] I observed
Brandon to be, uh...
He was remorseful.
He, you could tell
this has been
weighing on Brandon
for 17 years.
But he doesn't recall
seeing Holly with a knife.
Approximately one month
after speaking with
Brandon Muff and Abby,
I was able to track down
Holly Boisvert,
in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
-[knocks on door]
-[door opens]
[Det. Martin] It took Holly
quite a while to answer
the door, but when she did,
I introduced myself as, uh,
Detective Martin from
Fort Wayne,
and, I was working
on a cold case.
The look on her face,
she was, uh...
She got rather pale.
I indicated that I knew
that it'd been some time,
and I asked her
if she remembered
the party.
Nothing makes sense,
about the whole thing.
[Det. Martin] How so?
Everybody there,
we were all friends.
-I mean, it was--
-[Det. Martin] But,
you and Stacy had,
kinda had a little
beef going on,
because of Brandon.
-It was so stupid, that was--
-[Det. Martin]
It was, uh, it...
I agree, it was like
one of those just,
-petty, high school
girl things, right?
-Exactly.
-[Det. Martin] Okay, so...
-I know everybody
says that
I did something to her,
I know that they blame me.
[Det. Martin] There were
several things that, uh,
really stuck out to me.
First and foremost,
she kept referring
to Stacy as her friend.
She was my friend,
we were terrible
teenage girls,
but she was
still my friend.
"And I would never
intentionally
stab my friend."
I would not have
done that to her.
Intentionally,
I never would've
pulled a knife on her.
We were terrible b*tches
to each other, but she was
still my friend.
I didn't expect that
we were gonna fight.
[narrator] Holly admits
to owning a pocket knife
at the time,
saying she
carried it around
for protection.
[Det. Martin]
Do you recall,
did you have, uh,
your pocket knife
with you that day?
I didn't even
have it with me,
like, if it was there,
it was in my bag,
it's not like
I walk around holding it.
[Det. Martin] Have you
seen it recently,
do you have it now?
Uh, let me...
[softly] Let me
look somewhere.
And she got up,
and she went back
to a bedroom area.
What's crossing my mind
when Holly hands me
this knife is,
one, is she trying to
throw me off of
what's really happening,
and where that knife
really is,
or two, did I catch her
in a moment of weakness,
and she actually
gave me the knife
used to k*ll Stacy?
I then returned back to
Fort Wayne, and began
putting information
together in the case.
[narrator]
While test results show
that Stacy's DNA
is not on Holly's knife,
Detective Martin does
further testing
on the weapon.
I ultimately showed
this pocket knife
to the chief pathologist
who investigated this case.
[Duffy] Dr. Scott-Wagner
reviewed the autopsy photos,
and came to the conclusion
that the knife
Holly Boisvert turned over
to Brian Martin,
was consistent with
the stab wounds
that DeGrandchamp received.
That information,
along with information
from the initial
investigation,
began to get us
to a point where
we were able to
present this case
to the Prosecutor's office.
[Duffy] On Wednesday,
March 25th of 2020,
Holly Boisvert was
taken into custody.
[Sara] To get her
just even back to Indiana,
and in Fort Wayne's jail,
was just like,
holy, you know what,
like, this is...
You know,
it's the first time that
I felt like
Stacy might actually
get justice.
The pre-trial conferences
were conducted by
the Allen County
Prosecutor's Office.
[narrator] After years
of silence from
the group of friends,
a star witness
finally decides to
come forward,
Amanda Richards,
who was in the car
with Holly and Whitney
the night of the party.
And one of the last things
Amanda remembers doing
is handing Holly
her knife,
and Holly walking up
to the house.
[Whitney] I was in the car,
I didn't even know Holly
and Amanda has
exchanged a knife.
[Det. Martin] I can't speak
to why Amanda
waited so long to
bring that information out,
I'm just thankful
that she did.
[narrator] In consultation
with Stacy's family,
Allen County offers
Holly Boisvert a plea deal.
[Det. Martin] Holly
ultimately acknowledged
the fact that
she did, in fact,
stab Stacy,
causing her death.
[narrator] Holly never
implicates Brandon,
or Abby.
She insists
she acted on her own.
[Jamie] She just sat there
and stated,
to the judge that she had
k*lled Stacy DeGrandchamp,
and he said then,
"How did you do it?"
And she said,
"I had a knife in my hand,
and I stabbed her once here",
and she said,
"and I stabbed her once here."
He said,
"And how would you
like to plead?"
And she said, "Guilty."
[Whitney]
I was emotional.
It hit me hard,
that finally...
Finally, she admitted to it.
[Duffy] Holly was sentenced
on January 14th of 2022.
The plea deal
called for 25 years,
with five years suspended,
and three years of
adult probation
following it.
[narrator] With time
already spent in jail
and good behavior,
Holly could be
out of prison
as early as 2030.
[Jamie] I absolutely believe
that Holly should've
gotten more time.
I felt, at least,
the full 20 years,
behind bars.
[Det. Martin] To me,
I think closure, uh,
quite frankly is [bleep].
Um, and I say that because
I don't how you can
have a loved one
taken from you
in a violent manner,
for no reason at all,
and ever be able to, uh,
wrap your brain around
how and why that happened.
[narrator] Even all these
years later,
Stacy's friends and family
can't fathom
how teen mean girl drama
turned so deadly.
I think the
most important piece
of it all
is that life is so fragile
and can be taken
at any point in time.
And even,
something senseless
over a a boy
or over, just,
being upset about rumors.
There are families that
never get justice for
their lost loved ones,
and so, at least,
Stacy got something.
I wrote a poem for Stacy,
and, um, they actually
published it inside
her yearbook
for Wayne High School
for 2003 graduating class,
which would've been her.
And I actually
have it here,
"Her eyes so bright
her smile so wide
we always let her know
that we are
right by her side,
so never forget her
never let her
leave your mind,
tell her you love her
just one more time."
