up the wrong tree,"

and I wasn't listening.

And I wasn't getting it.
And I was like,

Just wait 'til the weekend,
just wait 'til the weekend."

And he said...

"Cancel everything.
I don't --

I'm not going with you.

I don't --
I don't --

I don't want anything.

I don't want this.

And by the way,
where is my passport?"

And he went to Italy.

Because work is very
important to you.

And then it would...

it went back
and forth a lot.

Inner conflict.

Nobody knows.

[Orna] And that's,

confusing, maybe
crazy-making?

Very -- very
confusing.

[Orna] Mm-hm.

We had had a...

later timeline...

and it just
kind of, like...

got accelerated...

it felt like,
without my input.

So, what made you
wanna move faster...

and what made
you feel reluctant?

[Lauren] Mm-hm.

For me, that was...

still a time period
of intense...

instability.

Mm-hm.

I'm trans

and I began
my transition

-when I was 27.
-Mm-hm.

I think only over
the past year

I think I've
really...

come into
my...

-self, and --

have felt...
stable...

within...

my personal
identity --

-Yeah.
-And...

wh-- where
I'm...

-at as a human.
-Mm-hm.

And so...

having a baby...

Could destabilize
that.

change --

Suddenly,
I'm a mom...

And I had just...
like...

really become
a woman.

[Orna] Mm-hm.

that was scary.

Yeah.

Having a baby
is, like...

the only
thing that

I have known
in my life

that I want...

-for sure.
-Mm-hm.

I know I want
a child,

I have known
my whole life.

And so when she
brought up all of these...

concerns...

I...

completely
froze...

and I just felt

completely devastated...

because it felt
like she was

taking this
away from me.

Mm-hm.

And...

I felt like her concerns
were valid...

but...

they weren't
important enough

to take away the one
thing that I want...

in this life.

And I knew -- I knew
that she wasn't saying

"No, we can't
have kids."

I knew that she
was saying "Wait"...

but her concerns
felt like...

concerns that you're
gonna have forever.

And if you keep
letting those concerns --

But if --

But -- but
in a way...

whatever the argument
you're making in your mind,

you could not --

because of the intensity
of your wish...

you could not hold
in mind Lauren's...

position as valid.

It just felt too
threatening to...

your attachment
to this...

potential baby.

Yeah, it didn't
feel valid.

Yeah, you couldn't
hold her as valid.

You said it
felt selfish.

It did feel
selfish

and I still think it
sounds selfish. [laughs]

I think that those
concerns are valid,

but it doesn't feel
valid enough to, like,

kick it down
the road...

And so,
in that fight...

I mean it lasted
like three days.

-Yeah, it was pretty brutal.

this is the kind of thing
that's really difficult.

I mean, these

on something
so important...

that's a
difficult one.

-Yeah, it was pretty scary.

I was feeling that day.

like all is lost?

Like, so
heartbroken.

And, in
retrospect...

I realize, like,

I was slipping
into depression --

and I was looking
for anything

to look
forward to.

Like the baby will
somehow save you

from the
depression.

And I know that's
such a cliché,

but yeah,
just planning.

-It's not a cliché.
-Just knowing

-that it's coming --
-Yeah.

just knowing that I have
to keep my sh*t together

so that I can be
there for somebody.

Yeah.

And I feel like
she was...

impeding my...

-healing.
-Mm-hm.

Felt like a huge
betrayal.

And I just
felt like...

if you're gonna stop me
from moving forward...

I don't know how
this can continue.
