and a greater range.

the fuel capacity
or the tank storage

to make a trip that far

we can transport the boats

what they do best, catch ahi.

we have six days from today
to make this happen

and when I say,
"make this happen,"
I don't mean get out there

and get the fish in six days.

We have to be back
at the dock, and the fish
has to be on the airplane.

because we have not a whole
lot of time to go exploring.

We have a very short window
to make this happen.

You know, I've heard
of the seamounts, growing up.

It rises almost 15,000 feet
from the sea floor,

and it covers hundreds
of miles.

It's the underwater equivalent
of mauna kea.

It creates its own ecosystem.

Then you wanna concentrate
on the three main quadrants
where we caught the most fish.

Around that cone would be
your northwest quadrant,

your northeast quadrant, and
then your southeast quadrant.

Primarily, we got
a lot more action over
on the southeast corner.

When ocean currents run into
these underwater slopes,

it causes strong upwelling,
which pushes the nutrients
up to the surface.

From there,
that draws in the bait fish,

and the ahi
come underneath those.

It's basically
a goldilocks environment.

Is there anything we should
really worry about out there?

[bob] well, sometimes with
a... The current will change
out there,

then the schools will move
to another quadrant.

-Okay.
-So you wanna figure out
that current

because you've got all your
upwelling's of all your food
and your nutrients,

and that's what the fish
are gonna concentrate on.

It's all about food for them,

It's basically a big
underwater mountain
that comes up,

and the way the current
upwells there,

a lot of different nutrients
tend to hang out there,

and the fish kind of
congregate around it.

Although it looks flat
in all directions,

below the surface,
the cross-pacific current rips
from southwest to northeast,

meaning the southeast quadrant
should have really strong
upwelling.

Starting to mark up

we kind of found some birds.
That's a good sign.

The fish out here,

because they haven't really

they're wild.

A lot of time the fish
will kind of come up,
and you can get them to feed.

If we can piece it together
and catch some fish, I mean,
that right there is a win.

There's no doubt we're rolling
the dice out here.

The signs for ahi,
they're around.

With the birds and the bait,
it's looking real good.

Now all we got to do
is hook up,
get one on the boat.

They'll chase 100, 150-pound
ahi right up to the boat
and they'll eat it.

When you head to an exotic
location offshore,

you know that you're gonna get
more than just big fish.

out of josh.

First the cornelia,
then a handmade device,
and now we got a drone.

I mean, how many more tools
is it gonna take
to find these fish?

-[casey] here's jeff, too.

[casey] right now,
I'm covering five, six
football fields in the path.

The drone is really
the best tool for this.

We can get way out past
the edge of the whales.

Hopefully, we can find
a sign of life.

You go up about 500 yards...

Bait ba*ls are schools
of small fish

that have been pushed
to the surface,
feeding on nutrients,

and they can draw in the ahi's
that we're looking for.

[fish finder beeps]

there's a big fish
right here at 70.

actually worked, and jeff hit,

but this tuna almost yanked
the gaff straight out
of his hands.

Who knew the seamounts
were gonna be like the
bermuda triangle of drones?

[man] I can tighten it up

if you want, jeff.

Part of the reason I was so
excited about making this trip
to the seamounts

is because we got to use
the cornelia to make this trip
more efficient.

[casey] nice.

[josh] oh, hey,
little kick in that,
little fight in that dog.

But we fished the entire day
and only caught one fish.

[casey speaking]

we're not gonna make our order
if jeff's the only one
that's catching,

and catching at that rate.

Coming down.

[sighs]

[josh] so, first day
has not gone
as well as planned.

I thought the seamounts
were gonna have a little bit
more plentiful fish than this,

but I haven't really seen
anything yet.

Little discouraging.

I know what's right and wrong
down there, josh.

-Okay.
-I've been doing it
for 30 damn years.

-That's right.
-When I see you doing
something that ain't right,

-I'm gonna say something--

...So you will do it right.

You know, moments
when I let my dad down...

Those were some of the hardest
times in my life.

[phil] I'm not gonna be here
for very much longer.

I'm not. That's a fact.

But then again, you know,
I get to spend time
with my kids.

There's not enough money in
the world that can buy that.

[josh] I didn't get it
back then.

Now I realize how hard they
must have been for him, too.

[phil] I think everybody
wants a legacy, you know?

There's just a lot of things
that I've taken for granted
in my life

that I need to
start addressing.

[josh] when I failed,
I know he felt like he failed,

so I'm gonna fight
for what I'm building now,

just like he fought for me,

because leaving a legacy,
it's not supposed
to come easy.
