That was the year I was born.

And there's a lot of notes.

And I definitely know
it's my dad's.

I'm not quite sure
what the old man was up to,

But he definitely had something
in the works with this one.

On the big island of hawaii.

in notes he made years ago.

It all began last summer
with a discovery.

When we were digging apart
the old man's room,

We found a compartment full
of charts,

All sorts of charts.

I would think these charts
would only be

For the bering sea, but wrong.
They're from hawaii.

They fished first in here.

Hang on.
Here's a key right here.

Caught fish is a star.
Plus is productive spot.

You know, the kona coast
is supposed to be

One of the premier
fishing areas in the world.

This is the spot.

Josh: when you look at all
these notes that he made,

That's definitely more than
a weekend trip to hawaii.

There was a lot
of information there.

"Hear this side of the island
is very productive."

Casey: phil always had
an alternative angle.

He was always looking for
a different way to make a buck.

I think there's something
else there

That nobody else knows about.

Do you know if my dad

About going to hawaii
and fishing?

I was thinking about that.

Everyone thinks about stuff
like that.

You catch a $30,000 tuna
over there, good money.

What guy wouldn't want
to do that?

You know, I got to tell you,
back in the '80s and '90s,

Especially after 1980 when we
had the collapse of king crab,

A lot of the pioneers
that developed

The alaska crab fishery,
hawaii was on their radar

Just to have that ace
in the hole,

You know,
that ace up your sleeve.

Sometimes, this fishery's good,
that one's bad,

And that's probably why
your dad was over there,

And, you know, I was looking
in the fisherman's journal.

I flew to bedford,
massachusetts,

Because we didn't
fish king crab.

Think maybe he went west,
and you went east?


Crash, didn't know about it.

Lot of guys were outreaching,

Trying to figure out
the next million-dollar move,

And during the dates
we looked on the charts,

My dad was outreaching
to hawaii,

And a couple other guys
were doing the same thing.

Well, I think the market is
hungry right now for fresh ahi.

There could be a lot of money
being made up there.

We're thinking about
running over there.

- You're thinking on doing it?
- Yeah.

Well, we, we, the royal we.oh?

Two of us. There's two --oh, wait a minute.

Two nuts in every peanut.

What's your point
in all this?

Well, you know,
I want to go over there

And see what it's like
possibly just to see

What the whole industry
is about to begin with and see

If there is a possibility
you could do it commercial.

This is 2,500 miles from here,
totally different situation.

How do you know
where you're going to fish?

Well, we're just going
to go by the marks.

we're going to fish

When we started
with the cornelia marie?

We kind of knew.
We kind of went out that way.

We know they're not
on the beach,

And we know they don't
jump on the boat.

It's also hawaii.

I mean, how bad could

haven't caught a fish.

The reason why josh and I
have been successful together

In the past
is because he's the dreamer.

You know, he's always thinking
about different things,

And he's going after
some of his dad's dreams,

Whereas I stay grounded,

And I try to think about things
a little bit more logically.

I try to put the business side
of it together.

And try to do this
without having any history here.

When you come from something
that you know so well

To go to something
that you know nothing about,

Your chances of failure are big.

I think the quickest way to get
things accomplished

And figure out
the fishery over here --

Get local knowledge.

And we're seeing what my dad
probably saw before my time.

They have all these tuna,
ahi, swordfish.

That's yellowfin
down there.

Look at the size of this guy.

I never seen no
like this.

A hundred-pound fish.

Right, 104-pounder.

Casey: after talking with some
of the local fishermen,

We've kind of figured out
they sell to grocery stores.

They sell directly
to restaurants.

Red.

Hawaii is the only state
where you can sell

As a fisherman
straight to a restaurant.

What's the most expensive
fish in this house? Ahi?

The fish I really want to catch
the most is an ahi tuna.

They're worth the most out
of the whole shebang of fish

Out there in this region.

This is a 138-pound fish,
damn near 2 grand.

Gutted, gilled, tail off,


Yep.

This one's even more.

Casey: some of these smaller
boats, if a guy really knows

What he's doing,
some of these local guys

Can turn upwards at $10,000,
$12,000 days.

a lot of animal life out there.

the point gets rough."

That's the
thousand fathom line.

"Ahi fish good," it says.

Josh: this chart's a complete
mystery to me,

But I know the years my dad
put into it, it means something.

Just having jeff explain
all these markings,

Especially around
the thousand fathom line,

Is definitely saying,

"Hey, there's something
going on here."

When you get out here, rather
than looking at the whole chart,

Maybe look at one or two marks.okay.

If we get on something,

We're going to fish,

So why should I help these guys?

I know they're no joke.

To be fishermen in alaska,
that's brutal.

Josh: oh, boy. No, no, no, no, no, no.

They have a massive overhead.

They have massive quota,
massive expense.

All six tanks punched,
we did it.

These guys know how to move
product on a megaton scale.

Maybe I can teach these guys

But I ain't catching
all the fish,

And they ain't taking
all the money.

That ain't what
we're doing here.

to solve this mystery.

First spot is near
the thousand fathom line marked,

"Got ahi."

I'm hoping with jeff's knowledge

That we can start following
these bread crumbs

My dad left behind,
just like we did in alaska.

Going to come down here and see
all these little strings.

We put in millions of pounds
of crab right here.

Up there, my dad was most known
for fishing a little spot

Called the rock pile.

The rocks start from
right here this way.

It's a tricky area,
but he had his secrets.

Then we're going to hit
little hard spots,

And we're going to weave around,
and the trick is to get the pot

Right next to the rock
and not on the rock.

Years later,
we applied his lessons.

dominated the fishing industry.

This is a ko'a out here.

This is a ledge, and there's
probably going to be

Some baitfish showing up.

What do you call it, ko'a?

Ko'a.
What's ko'a?

Ko'a is basically in hawaiian
what we just basically call,

Like,
a good fishing ground.

It's a spot where there might be
a big ledge that comes up,

Could be a point,
but on the right current

And the right depth,
the right tide, you know,

Fish come in on the bait ledges,
and they feed.

Jeff: main things that I'm
looking for when I'm out there

Is any type of life
that's existing on the water.

If there's big bait schools,
and the birds are hovering up,

Chances are there's some type
of big game fish

That's underneath them,
and if the baitfish are jumping,

It usually means
that they're moving,

And if they're moving,
they're being hunted.

Some big white bird
just went up and down.

Oh, right there.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.

Look at all the splashing
right there.

Yeah, so we got some bait
coming up here.

Oh,.
That's a big bait ball.

Whew!

So, josh, you see all this
red on the screen?

- Yeah.
- That's bait.

You see these other
staggered marks

Kind of congregate
underneath them?

Those are bigger fish
that are looking up.

Those are predators.

It looks like there's a couple
of them down there.

Yeah, so we're actually
marking ahi right now.

Ahi.

So we're going to go
up-current a little bit.

We'll throw a live bait out.

We basically want to be putting
a bait away from a pile of bait,

So a fish can single that
bait out and go and eat it.

Jeff: so you're going to just
basically just hook it

Through the nose,

Hook it through the eye,
any way you want.

Yeah, perfect.

Ugh, dude, did you see
that squirt?

Jeff: so he's underneath us.

It's a good starter fish
for casey and josh.

to equal what an ahi is worth.
