I am meeting today with Erica Komisar.

She's a renowned psychoanalyst,
social worker,

and parent guidance expert.

-Hi! how are you?
-Hi!

I'm good. Thanks for having me.

Yeah. Thanks for coming.

I had seen lots of her videos
on social media,

and I felt compelled to reach out to her

because she really focuses
on zero to three years of age

and says that that is
the most important time, developmentally,

for your child with attachment
and being there for them.

And how do you know each other?

Are you-- Do you live in the same area?

-School.
-We are from school.

-[Erica] Yeah?
-Our daughters are together right now.

Uh, I don't know how, but I came
to their Christmas party

and pretended
to be Khloé's assistant as a joke,

and she would introduce me
as her assistant.

Pretending to be Khloé's assistant

really got me hooked up in the family.

[group laughing]

And then Yris is
my sister Kylie's best friend.

[Erica] Nice to meet all of you.

So, I'm a psychoanalyst,
and I started a nonprofit.

It's called Attachment Circles,

and younger and younger children
were being brought to me,

as young as two years of age
with behavioral problems,

and psychiatrists were trying
to medicate them, and--

and it upset me.

I did a deep dive into the neuroscience

and the attachment theory,

and so I said I'm gonna put this
in laypeople's terms

so people can understand it.

And what I was finding
is that there was an absence

of just basic fundamental understanding
of parenting skills.

The children who were doing the least well

were the children
whose primary attachment figures

were not present.

When I was 30 when I had Mason,
nobody told me what to do,

I didn't read any books,
but the way that I felt,

my maternal instinct was
to do attachment parenting.

Before I had Penelope though,

I read the attachment parenting book

and it was more intentional,
and even though I was working,

I didn't really think it was
an option to not work.

Now I have the option not to work,

and I feel grateful to be able
to find what I connect to.

[Erica] Zero to three
is the first critical period

of brain development,
so what we were seeing

is children with behavioral problems,

with depression, with anxiety.

These are all disorders
of emotional regulation.

So, if you yourself are
emotionally regulated,

if you are calm in a storm,
you model it for your children.

So, I would say
the most powerful thing is you.

I think Travis was saying
you went to Australia,

-and you took Rocky with you, right?
-Yeah.

At two months, and some people would say--

-Four months.
-Four months.

Some people would say, "Oh,
he's too young, it's such a long flight."

But if you have to work
and you're gonna travel,

-you always take your baby with you.
-[friend] Yeah. Mm-hmm.

[Erica] They rely on the same
instinctual cues as all mammals.

They wanna be physically
skin to skin close to you,

they wanna smell your smells.

So, if you have to go out,

you give them a T-shirt
that stinks of you,

and they feel you're still
with them in some way.

-I-- I would take it.
-Yeah. Take it with you?

Yeah, I would take my baby with me,

um, only from what I've learned
about attachment theory.

Yeah.

In this country, we have no paid leave.

I've been fighting
for paid leave for a decade.

I went to the Senate
to speak about the importance

of paid leave
for primary attachment figures,

and there is always an excuse,

and yet they say
that we're a family-oriented society.

When they're adolescent,
now they have school

from 8:30 in the morning
until 3:30 in the afternoon.

You can have a job,
you can start a company.

It's not a message of you can't work.

It's a message of sleep when they sleep
when they're infants,

and work when they work as they get older.

I know some people find her
to be controversial

and I think most of it
is because of, you know,

people that are like,
"Well, I can't just not work,

and I need to work, and we need
both Mom and Dad to work."

But I think her point is that
she feels like our government

should support moms

and/or dads

to be home with their baby.

I just heard something recently

where it was like the things that you do

-that are the opposite...
-Yeah.

...of your parent

is like you're healing yourself

-from something that you didn't...
-[Yris Palmer] That's what I feel.

...get that you needed.

-I feel like I'm the opposite of my mom.
-So am I.

I am a lot different as a mother,

than my mom was.

She was definitely
more controlling and still is,

but it was the '80s then.

It was a different time.

To me, like, I'm just like,
"Live your best lives, guys."

How long do you think, too, like...

-Yeah.
-...they should be in the bed

and also, like, breastfeeding?

So, they should be--
They should be in your bed

for the first eight weeks to 12 weeks.

We sleep like a dream together.

The whole point of breastfeeding

is the emotional attunement.

I mean, I've treated mothers
who sit and they say,

"Is it okay to be on my phone
while I'm breastfeeding?"

-And I'm like, no, 'cause you're--
-Wait, what if your baby's asleep

then can you be on your phone

-when you're breastfeeding?
-[laughter]

'Cause I'm on my phone--

I-- I didn't know the "no phone" thing.

I mean, I did not know

that you should not be
on your phone while breastfeeding.

I've definitely done that with all kids.

This is so, like--

-[Yris] Refreshing.
-Refreshing. Yeah.

And it filled me up a lot,

-so thank you. Yeah.
-Yeah.

Like, I did not know

-the breastfeeding phone thing...

...and now I'm like the guilt that I have,

but it's good because
you shouldn't be doing it.

[Erica] It activates the part of your ego

that says something feels right
or feels wrong.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

[Kourtney] There's so many different ways

for people to parent their kids,

but this is just what
really connects with me.

I definitely learned a lot today

and found it really informative
and helpful.

One of the issues is
you have this lovely community,

but most mothers
are finding it very lonely

and so we need support,

and we need all of you
to tell everyone you know

and if you have any influence
at all, spread the word.

My only focus and job

is really just to be strong for my kids.

and see what my brain's like.

I'm always trying to test
and do things to see where I'm at

and how I can improve.

Wait, look it. My brain is perfect
when it comes to stressing.

Then why do you act like that?

Does this tell you--

I'm-- have a very abnormally calm demeanor

even in, like, fight and flight mode.

Can you see stuff like that

and see why someone is so calm, and--

You're like one of the very few people

that there were zeros

-on all of the mood anxiety questions.
-[Kim] Yeah.

-[Scott] It's insane.
-[Kim] Yeah.

-Do we have a blanket.
-Yes, we do.

I've always wondered why Kim
has been able to stay so calm

during pretty much anything.

I mean, she could get into a fist fight

with one of her sisters and then be like,

"Should I get green tea or Earl tea?"

And I'm like, "I think
you just assaulted somebody."

She's able to bottle up her emotions.

I'm not sure where they go.

Maybe she's tucking 'em under her butt.

That's why it's so big.

I can fall asleep anywhere. Anywhere.

I swear to God, I went to a strip club

for my first time
in Miami like a year ago.

I fell asleep in the [bleep] booth.

Like, I can literally lay down anywhere

no matter what's going on and fall asleep.

It's just like a little cocoon
that you're in

and you just fall asleep.

I've never looked at my brain before,

so should be interesting.

I have a beautiful brain.

Not terribly stressed,
not anxious, not depressed.

The front third of your brain
is really sleepy.

-Then you end up with issues

with impulse control.

Compared to this one,

With your frontal lobes as they work now,

it would be harder to manage stress,

and that's not good for you,

especially as you're studying
and you are getting ready

to take the boards.

That just can't be.

It just can't.

Not accepting.

For whatever reason, you're not getting--

And it could be the chronic stress...

trying to think about taking the boards

-in a couple of months...

...and studying 10 hours a day.

Not to mention all the other things
that go on in your life.

that Bruce did so well with us,

is Bruce never tried to be Dad.

such blind loyalty to my dad,

She was the oldest
going through that divorce.

It's a lot emotionally on people.

five when I met Bruce.

a fairy tale, and it's innocence,
