we have used swimming pools
very often we try to get

A water source as close
to the fire as possible.

are these overbuilt
for firefighting?

Or is this just
a standard military helicopter

That has been adapted
to civilian use?

Well, that's the great thing
about the uh-60 series aircraft,

Is they were built specifically
for combat operations,

So they are
very robust aircraft.

And it translates well
to what we do,

Because we are very hard
on our aircraft.

in l.A. County we cover
close to 4,000 square miles,

So that's everything from
offshore catalina 22 miles

Over water, all the way
up to 10,000 feet.

Of missions there
when you include weather.

You might get snow,
you might get rain,

You might get fog
and they're flying missions

-24 hours a day too.

Operators that you'll see
on the fires at night.

What do families do

They use it for carrying people

And that's the practicality

"let's combine the two,"

Putting this sliding roof
in the back

So that you had the utility
of a station wagon

And the utility
of a pickup truck all in one.

it still seems like
a pretty good idea.

Why wasn't it more popular?

these are manual.

So you really
this should have been

An automatic retracting roof,

So it's not the handiest thing
for going out shopping

Or even to the local lumberyard.

a mechanical one is exactly
what elon musk is doing

On the cybertruck.

There are also problems
on some of them with leaks

And, of course, when you have
an opening like this,

That's fairly common.

The survival rate of these cars
is really low,

So to see one
is really a treat.

The risk of this
was fairly great.

The reward could have been great

If only things had been
going better for studebaker

On a business point of view.

Let's take a look
at the cadillac.

In the late '70s,
there was a big push

For improving fuel economy.

Small cars and big cars.

And, of course, nobody wanted

To give up the idea
of a big v8 engine

In a car like this
cadillac seville,

So engineers came up
with the idea

Of canceling out cylinders
when you didn't need them,

At low speeds,
at stoplights,

Things like that, and so
that's why this car wears

These wonderful badges "8-6-4."

So when you needed
all the power,

It ran on all eight cylinders;

When you needed a little less,
on six;

And then, finally,
on four cylinders.

well, it does make sense

Because once you're going


You only need the four cylinders
to keep it going at that speed.

it's quite similar
to technology that we see today.

There were these
electronic solenoids

That deactivated the valves
for the cylinders,

Depending on how many
you wanted to deactivate.

it was a little
ahead of its time.

As I remember,
the trouble was,

You know, cadillac
was the standard.

And when you stepped on
a cadillac, effortless power.

As it deactivated:

It just didn't sound cadillac.

there were some problems
with the electronics.

The fisker karma.

This is one of the first

Of the electric-gasoline
hybrid cars.

A company started
by henrik fisker,

Who was a former bmw
top executive.

-And aston martin.
-And aston martin, yes.

I love the look of this car.

Well, that's
the big selling point.

Henrik is an amazing designer.

I think it was let down
by the mechanicals.

It was basically
a four-cylinder engine

Hooked to a hybrid drivetrain

Which gave you
maybe 22 miles electric

And then you're back
to the gas.

The trouble with the fisker,
it promised more

Than it delivered.

This roof is a good example.

This is a solar panel.

And I remember arguing
with people at the time.

"as you go down the road,

The solar panel charges the car
so you can keep going."

I go, "no, this isn't enough
to drive the fan."

It takes a lot of solar power
to power a battery.

All right, so,
which of these three cars

Do you think
has performed the best

In terms of the market
in the last five years?

to me, the one that holds
the greatest appeal

Is the studebaker
because it's so unusual.

So you're going west
with the studebaker.

on active duty in the marines

Because, you know,
I had to provide.

Now was there any time
when you were 19

You thought about doing this
before you went in the marines?

yeah, I was I was always a fan
of comedy my whole life.

I grew up loving it.

And I was a theater
and film major in college,

And I knew there was
something in me

That always wanted to do it
and try it.

But I also wanted to serve
and do that as well.

You know, when you graduate
from university of kansas

Or the university of anywhere
as a theater major,

You're gonna be a waiter
for a long time.

Or I had my pilot's license,

So I got a guaranteed
flight contract

With the marine corps,
so I thought,

"well, maybe I'll be top g*n."

that's realistic, yeah.

who has an amazing story.

His name is dan parker.

Dan is 50 years old,
professional race driver,

And a drag racing champion.

This is your car right here.

Tell us about what happened.

You were the 2005
world champion.

yeah, I'm the 2005
american drag racing league

Pro nitrous world champion,

And we were testing
a new motor combination.

On March 31st, 2012,

On the first full pass
at the eight-mile mark,

At 175 miles an hour,
the car made

A hard right turn
into the wall.

Went over the wall,
tumbled, broke in half.

I woke two weeks later
from an induced coma

To find out my brain swole,

Compressed my optic nerve
and k*lled it.

-I'm 100% blind for life.
-Wow.

I've never heard
of any other racer going blind,

You know, especially from
something like I went through.

I accepted the fact as a racer

I might come home beaten up
or in a box.

I never imagined
I'd come home blind.

oh, man,
but that didn't stop you.

I had about six months
of deep depression,

And one night in a dream, I had
a dream that I could race again,

So I started designing
and building a motorcycle.

Ten months later, in 2013,
I became the first blind man

To race bonneville in '14
and return

And set the fim class record.

okay, now getting
on a motorcycle

When you're blind seems,
I hate to say dumber,

But dumber than getting back
in a car when you're blind.

-What kind of motorcycle?
-It's a three-wheel motorcycle

To take the balance
out of the equation.

It has a 70cc
two-stroke aprilia.

And my fim class record
is 62.05 miles per hour.

okay. Then you decide
to get back into the car.

This is a car you built
yourself, isn't it?

yes, with a lot of help
of volunteers and friends.

But at the very beginning,

I think people thought
I was prank calling them

When I would call and tell them
what I was trying to do.

So what do we have here?

It looks like a 2007,


yeah, 2008 corvette.

I bought it as a flood car,

Had no motor
and no interior in it,

With the sole purpose
of building it

And becoming
the world's fastest blind man.

building a car as a blind man,
how did that work?

I have to figure out
adaptive techniques.

With measuring, I still run
my milling machine and lathe.

I have a talkbox
hooked to my caliper

So I can machine something
within a thousandth of an inch.

And so I've been hands-on
in building this car,

Not just sitting
on the sidelines.

and what do you want to do?

What do you want to do

you want to try to get?

With human assistance.

So my goal eventually
is to become

But to do it with

at boeing phantom works,

Built me this guided system

That gives me audible feedback.

So it has a gyro in it, gpses,

I've got inertia switches,

And it can do calculations
or predictions

To know where I'm at
ahead of myself.

I'm able to correct my steering
with the audible feedback.

And you hear audible beeps
left and right,
