05x03 - Truly Unconventional

Post by bunniefuu »

around we go.

This is the craziest race
I've ever been in in my life.

There's a guy in front of me
with a dog on his roof.

I don't think it's real.

Boy, this thing is sliding
all over the track.

I already see the wreckage
of a half a dozen cars out here.

I got that corvair in my sights,

But he's still
a little way ahead of me.

I think I got him right here.

I got the corvair
getting in the corner, but--

Whoa, whoa!

Tonight on jay leno's garage...

We speed past
your typical muscle cars

To celebrate the truly strange.

Hi, girls.

The unconventional
rolling oddities

That make every gearhead's life
just a little brighter.

Even marty mcfly
never got to do this.

Oh, this is so my car, jay.

honda makes lawn mowers.

Why not make
the world's fastest?

If it's weird and it drives...

All right, let's race,
I think we can have some fun,

As long as we don't crash
into each other.

-Why would you say that?
-...Or even if it floats.

it's like a monster truck
for the water.

...We're taking it for a spin.

This is the first time
it's been raced as a hot dog?

-Absolutely correct.
-Hop in, baby.

-Time to get freaky.
-You're the first man

To show me a good time
in a very long time.

on jay leno's garage.

oh, my god!

for some people,
cars are not just a way

To get from point a to point b.

No, these select few
see the automotive world

As a blank canvas
for creativity,

And inspiration can be found
just about anywhere.

Did the raw power
of an actual wild horse

Inspire lee iacocca
to create the ford mustang?

Could the stealth and speed
of a deadly snake

Have moved carroll shelby
to dream up the legendary cobra?

Frankly, I have no idea,
but I do know this.

They took the fastest, meanest,

And most powerful sea creatures
in the ocean

To inspire...

The seabreacher.

These custom-built watercraft
are stylish and powerful,

And they use a mixture
of boat and aircraft technology.

Now you can dive, jump,
do barrel rolls,

And fly across the water
just like a dolphin.

great job, great job.

Boy, this thing's a lot of fun.

You know, it's like something
right out of a bond film,

It's one of those deals that q
would come up with, you know?

How many horsepower
are we talking, rob?

this one's got 300 horsepower,

Which is quite a few ponies.

-Did you design and build these?
-Yeah, yeah.

I've been designing
and building these

For about the last 20 years.

I mean, he's from new zealand,
which is basically

A ritz cr*cker
in the middle of the ocean.

that's right, we're just trying
to get out of there,

So we have to build
our own watercraft.

It's pretty amazing.

When this canopy comes down,

There's an inflatable seal here
that makes it airtight.

We're doing jumps
and going underwater,

And I'm completely dry.

and you can drive it open

And you can get wet,
everything's waterproof.

So it's a convertible,
then in inclement weather,

You can close it down,
and this is 60 miles an hour.

yeah, and you feel--
it feels like

when you go up.

It's like a monster truck
for the water.

I guess you want to sell this
to responsible people, you know.

I mean, it could be dangerous

If one of these got
in the hands of an idiot.

-What's that?
-That's an idiot alert.

That's telling us if there's
an idiot in the vicinity.

hey, I know that idiot!

jay, I didn't think
this was your style.

it's not.

You may recognize jeff dunham

From his frequent appearances
on this program

Or you might recognize him

'cause he's
a super famous comedian.

come on,
you can beat this moron.

no, it is pretty neat,
this thing.

it is, it is literally like

Flying a fighter plane
in the water.

you look like a plane
that got shot down.

thanks!

Oh, yeah, that's right.
Are you goose?

no, you're goose
'cause you die in this.

All right, let's race,
I think we can have some fun.

I think so, yeah.

-Did I win the last two?
-No, we were even.

Oh. Let's do this.

Oh, yeah, now I remember.

Jeff cruised to victory
in our first amphicar race,

Then I tied it up
the next time we hit the water.

By a nose!

So this will be
the big tiebreaker.

these guys are dumb-a-sses.

-Dunham, where you goin'?
-Nowhere, hold on.

you know, once we get
to the starting line.

Now I go sailing by again.

It's like a car with no brakes,
you can't stop,

You just keep sliding along.

hold on, let me back up.

it's gone.

It's a race for the ages

As two hydrodynamic heavyweights
face off

In the ultimate tiebreaker.

We're going to the buoy and back

With a big jump
at the finish line.

I'm gonna send jeff
and his little puppet pals

Back to seaworld.

latch, latch. Good.

Inflate the seals.

it's really kinda tricky
to drive this

'cause it's basically
the opposite of a car.

start the engine.

the throttle
is in the hand stick...

-Right pedal.
-And I'm steering with my feet.

all right, go.
Get it up fast, go.

the hand stick
also controls the side wings

And the foot pedals
also raise or lower the nose.

whoa!

which means there's a whole
bunch of things I can screw up

When I'm trying to go
around this buoy.

Oh, I think he's gettin' it up.

Oh, took that one
just a little too wide!

that was good, that was good.

I think my dolphin
is doing this on porpoise.

slide down a bit,
slide down a bit,

We're all over
the ship, dude.

wow, you're close.

-What's that?
-You're not throttle-shy!

no.

You can't afford
to be throttle-shy

When you're losing.

Ah, we got beat by dunham.

That was awesome.

I may have lost the race,

But maybe I can win over
the new zealand judges

With a better jump.

you k*lled it, that was great.

That was way better than jeff's.

-"way better than jeff's."
-way better, that's good.

to be fair, I think rob
would've said anything

To get out of this thing
with me driving.

Jeff, thanks a lot, man,
really appreciate it.

Really a good sport,
lot of fun.

And you won! ... You.

Okay, I'll take it.

this ain't over yet.

If you know
of any aquatic vehicle

I can use to beat jeff
next time,

Send us a picture of it
and maybe it'll get on the show.

The 24 hours of le mans
is the world's oldest

And most prestigious
endurance race.

it's the only race
of its kind in the world.

only the very best cars
and driving teams

Get to race through the
beautiful french countryside.

great driving,

And an average
of 118 miles an hour.

but not just anyone
can afford racing at that level.

So for the rest of us,
there's a 24 hours of lemons.

It's an endurance race
for fun-loving gearheads

Where teams of amateur drivers
take $500 cars

And try to complete
the most laps over a weekend.

Between the crashes
and the decorations,

It's a bunch of chaos
focused on the fun of racing,

And I'll be competing
in the next event.

So right now,
I'm looking for the best team

And the best car
to join up with.

It's between one car
without an engine,

One that looks like
it puts in its own engine,

And what I hope to god
is a hot dog on a porsche.

-This is your car?
-Yeah, it's a 1997 boxster.

-I'm assuming this is a hot dog?
-It's a hot dog.

now that the censors
have cleared it

And it's actually a hot dog,
we can show the whole car.

-It's team intellivision.
-Thank you, okay, good.

It's modeled after
an old video game.

-What video game?
-It's family friendly.

-Burgertime!
-Oh, yeah, the cartoon.

-What do we have here?
-It's part of our theme.

-And the theme is?
-S.W.A.P. Team.

-S.W.A.P.?
-Like the police s.W.A.T. Teams.

oh, so it's a cop with a lisp.

So the idea is that
this is an engine hoist

And the car is mid-swap.

all right, I--I kinda get it.

Yours just seems like
a proper race car actually.

Do you have any sort of theme,
any wacky thing, guys?

I have a wacky team.

Would you say you're better
mechanics or better drivers?

-Neither.

has this car been
in any races before

-Or is this the first one?
-This car, uh,

As a race car,
was in several races.

This is the first lemons race.

This is the first time
it's been raced as a hot dog?

-Absolutely correct.
-Okay.

we drove this car from san diego
to houston,

We raced it in a 24 hour race.

so basically, this is a car
with some race history.

Hyundai excel, right,
manual gearbox?

-Accent, accent.
-Oh, accent, oh...

well, we haven't been doing
so well at finishing races.

We keep blowing
the outer motors.

We put this little chevy motor
in it,

And then we put this turbo
on the chevy motor.

Did you lower the compression?

So that's probably
one of the reasons that

-We're breaking the pistons.
-Yeah, that could be it.

I just like the fact
that you know the problem,

Yet it keeps happening.

In 24 hour races,
you share the driving duties

With your teammates,
so the final question is,

Which team has the best drivers?

first here is denise korenek.

Don't you have a bicycle record?

-I do.
-182 miles an hour

Or something on a bicycle?

Just 183.9.

-183.9, on a bicycle?
-On a bicycle.

that's very impressive.

So you're the only one here
that's an actual athlete.

Everybody else, I think...

-Everybody else...
-What, are you kidding me?

now, who is the best driver?

-Nick.
-Oh, you're the best?

-Wow, so you guys...
-Who's the most likely

-To crash the car?
-Nick.

now the race is only
a couple of days from today.

Are you gonna have
this in by then?

We will have this car
doing laps tonight.

-Tonight?
-Oh, yeah.

wow, okay.

-Is it street legal?
-No.

okay, so you can be in jail
on Saturday.

Well, yeah.

so my choices are a hyundai,

A hot dog,
and a car with no engine.

Thankfully, I have a few days to
mull over these amazing options.

Good luck, you're gonna be
driving it tonight.

-Oh, yeah.

coming up....

I think this is more you!

oh, this is so my car, jay!

when henry ford unveiled

The mustang
at the 1964 world's fair,

It was an immediate hit.

Within a year,
more than 400,000 had been sold,

And to this day,
the iconic 1964 1/2 ford mustang

Remains a must-have
for classic car enthusiasts.

Okay,
it's a pretty conventional car,

But it is the favorite of a very
unconventional friend of mine.

my car, you brought me
my favorite car, jay leno!

You rock!
It's even the right color!

god, the hookers here
are so brazen.

It may shock you to hear that
this shy and quiet wallflower

Is actually
a groundbreaking comedian.

You know, is there
something wrong with that?

lea actually made history
as the first openly g*y comedian

On american television.

The guy behind the counter,
he's this, like, white guy

With dreadlocks,
which is great, you know.

You know, here's a quarter,
buy yourself a culture.

and for millennials watching,

Yes, she's big boo
from "orange is the new black."

She's also a jazz singer,
a broadway star,

But more importantly,
a car nut.

let's fly, man!

Woo-hoo!

So good! So good!

so tell me why this
was your dream car.

well, I was always
a little gearhead,

So when the mustang came out,
just the look of it,

The sleekness of it,
the style of it,

I mean, look at this car,
it's gorgeous.

And then you turn
that engine over,

And, man, that sound,
it never gets old.

So did you always work on cars
when you were a kid?

my brother started
working on cars.

My brother was seven years
older than me,

So he started working on cars,
so I was fascinated by it.

He also drove a motorcycle
and I was fascinated by that.

I mean, that's why
I'm always surprised

That my parents didn't know I
was a l*sbian till I told them.

You would think you would know
when you see me out there

Covered in grease
working on cars with my brother.

well, I mean,
was there a big thing

To try and get you
to, you know,

Wear the crinoline dresses
and do the other thing...

-Oh, heck yeah,
-...And stop playing

-With those cars.
-Stop that!

Yeah, I mean,
we were italian catholics,

So they always wanted me
to wear the dress.

Easter was horrifying for me
because I loved the chocolate

But I knew I had to wear
that dress.

Right, right, yeah, yeah.

And what's the fastest car
you've ever been in?

I had the 1993 mustang
when it first came out,

The one with
the 5-liter engine.

And the thing about it was
it was so smooth,

And because of
the hydraulic clutch,

You couldn't even tell
how fast you were going.

yeah, yeah,
you're not talking to a cop now.

Well, I love that you drive
a stick, that's the first sign.

well, you know,
in show business,

I've had to, like,
in different movies,

I've driven almost everything.

-Really, yeah?
-I've driven a bus,

I've driven a plane,
I've driven a boat.

I guess the cars came before
the show business then, right?

yeah, cars came
before the show business.

In fact, I taught
a basic auto mechanics class

On Saturday mornings.

I was working
at a gas station at the time.

I was also
a construction worker,

I also refurnished,
um, furniture.

so you could've been
a one-person village people.

I could--

so you were a cop--a policeman,
mechanic, right.

except for the native american.

Yeah, I could've done all--

I think it's safe to say

You had
an unconventional career.

-Correct?
-Yeah, a crazy career.

and that's kinda what this show
is about, unconven--

And this is kind of
a conventional mustang.

-Oh!
-Well, it is.

-I mean, yeah.
-You know something,

I have another mustang.

I think this car
suits you better.

-It's more...
-Is there a bar in the car?

no, there's no bar in the car,

But it's raised the bar,
I guess you can say.

okay.

Here we go.

-Oh, my god!
-That was pretty good.

oh, my god, that was so fun!

look, it made
your hair stand on end.

This is the vicious mustang.

The guys at timeless customs
took a 1965 fastback

And turned it into this
high-performance racer

For the road.

From its custom paint color

To the 5.2-liter engine,

Its compound-boosted
by two turbochargers

And a supercharger.

Every inch of this car

Was meticulously crafted
to catch your eye

And then leave you in the dust.

Oh, and did I mention,
it's got 1,000 horsepower.

oh, my god, that was so good!

Yes!

Jay, that was like 0-90
in a nanosecond.

oh, yeah.

I think this is more you!

Oh, this is so my car, jay!

This is awesome!

Oh, man!

That is just ridiculous!

-That's hilarious, isn't it?
-Oh, my god!

Truly the greatest day
of my life, truly.

so what do you think, kid?
How did our date go?

well, let me just say this.

You're the first man
to show me a good time

In a very long time.

that's all right, works for me.

-Good seeing you.
-Thanks, my brother.

all right, let's see
what this baby can do!

let's go!

and now it's time
for jay hits the streets

With truly unconventional
car names.

-Hi, what's your name?
-Sonia.

-Hi, sonia, where you from?
-New york city.

new york city,
so do you own a car?

-No, absolutely not.
-Oh! Oh, my god.

I'll tell you what,
I'm gonna give you three cars.

Two of them are real cars,
one is fake.

American chocolate

Alldays & onions m*dget...

what?

Alldays, is that a car?

or the rambler brisket.

Are we having dinner or what?

which one of these is not real?

It'd be the allday & onions.

-No, so that is an actual car.
-Wow.

I'm surprised
you haven't seen one.

I've had a m*dget,
but it was an mg.

-It wasn't allday.
-Oh, okay. Oh, you mean the car.

The alldays & onions m*dget.

-No, it's real.
-Oh, my goodness.

mitsubishi lettuce,

The kia peephole,

Or the mazda bongo friendy?

-Was the second one peephole?
-Yes.

-The kia peephole.
-I have to do peephole.

-Why do you have to do peephole?
-'cause how could you name a car

Peephole?

that is correct, sir! Very good.

The kia peephole.

Who would want to drive
a peephole?

-Exactly, exactly.
-Yeah.

well, there are people,
that's the sad part.

The isuzu giga 20 light dump...

Toyota brickhaus,

Mazda scrum wagon.

The answer and more...

A bit later.

-Coming up...
-Whatever else you do,

Please don't break leno.

this stupid engine block
over my head

Is so distracting.

I think it's gonna rip apart.

S guy.

When the delorean
was introduced in 1981,

It was unconventional
in many ways.

For example,
they weren't painted,

They were left in bare metal.

They did that because the metal
was stainless steel,

Which made it impervious to rust

So you could just clean it
with a brillo pad.

It also had gull-wing doors
which is unconventional.

But designer and artist
matt riese has done something

That makes this
really unconventional

When you see it going
down the road.

This one-of-a-kind
delorean hovercraft

Floats just above the ground,

Which means we don't need roads!

It also means
we don't need land!

It hovers by using two fans

That are powered by two engines.

The front pair create
the lift from the ground

And the back pair provides
the thrust and the steering.

Even marty mcfly
never got to do this!

Did you always want a real
delorean and you built this?

I always wanted a real delorean.

Always dreamed about that,

And always dreamed about
building a hovercraft.

I originally thought,

"oh, it was the real body
off a delorean,"

But you actually made this,
didn't you?

-You made the whole thing?
-It's hand sculpted.

This is just a bunch of stuff
I bought at the hardware store

And then assembled it
into a hovering delorean.

so it's just styrofoam.

This is like a giant
styrofoam cup, isn't it?

it's like the most complicated
surfboard ever made, basically.

it's an impressive piece
of engineering.

It's really quite cool.

So what else are you working on?

Is this one of those projects
that'll never be finished,

You're always doing
improvements on it?

this one is done,

I'm actually gonna sell
this soon

And try to maybe build
a batmobile, flying batmobile.

a flying batmobile.

You know, I'll tell you what,

Don't call me
for the flying batmobile.

But, matt, this is really fun.

There's a lot
of engineering here

To get this thing to go
from land to water.

I thought for sure
we'd sink like a stone

When we got out here,
but it's pretty amazing.

Now, can we get this thing
back home, please?

-Fire it up.
-Let's do it.

okay, so it doesn't hit

Like doc brown's delorean,
but this thing,

It's going places.

Here in sonoma,
the best of the best--

I'm sorry, I meant to say
the weirdest of the weird

Have assembled
for the 24 hours of lemons race,

A brutal test of endurance
and imagination

That features the strangest
and sometimes cheapest cars

Imaginable, all attempting
to complete the most laps

In 24 hours
to take home the trophy,

Or at least I hope
there's a trophy.

all right, it is gonna be cold,

It is gonna be slippery.

You guys all know the drill.

Rookies who have not raced
with lemons before--

I'm looking at you, sir--

We really appreciate you
being here.

Whatever else you do,
please don't break leno.

All right, go out
and have a good race!

as I enter this race,
I have chosen

The most challenging car
imaginable,

A 2003 hyundai accent.

Out of my limited options,
I figured this had

The best chance
of actually finishing the race

Without making me look
like a wiener,

Plus I felt kind of right at
home with this team of misfits.

Well, here we are.

It's amazing how much
a race car differs

From a production model.

See, the production model
does not have the crane

Or the fake engine block

Or the toolbox
nailed to the roof.

I'm amazed
at how calm you can be

Because it's like
Saturday morning,

Green flag is not that far
away from us.

-Yeah.
-And I'm just kind of like...

especially an important race
like this one.

you're gonna go out there,
and it's just gonna be

Yellow transponder check laps,
so just because you think

You can go faster than they are,
don't pass them.

You're going around,
knowing where the track goes,

And they're checking
your transponder.

it's hard not to
pass driving an accent.

Spank said that it's tradition
for the rookie to start the race

So now I've got two engines,

And five teammates
counting on me

Not to further wreck
this crappy car.

Thankfully, we're starting
with some safety laps

And I'll be able to see
how both my engines behave.

This is...

This stupid engine block
over my head is so distracting.

I mean, it's really
pulling hard.

I think it's gonna rip apart.

That engine block
is moving around.

I don't know how long
it's gonna last out there.

Oh, boy, it's really dancin'.

I have this...This...

This stupid piece of styrofoam
is not gonna make it.

We haven't even done one lap yet
and its taken its toll.

This is the craziest race
I've ever been in in my life.

Okay, engine block broke.

I think they must've started
the race because suddenly

Cars are flying past me.

oh, great, poor guy.

He's stuck out there
on green flag.

Oh, horrible situation.

oh, there goes
the wiener mobile.

Is it too late
to change teams?

are you just stopping
'cause that fell off?

yeah, I can't see--
I can't see anything.

Just cut it off.

I guess the technical term
for this

Is engine failure, right?

And you can't blame me for this.

do you want it in your car
or do you want us to keep it?

no, you can keep it.

what I'm gonna have you do

Is just make a u-turn here,

And we'll send you back in
right after, okay?

-Gotcha, okay.
-Good luck.

this may be a silly race
with ridiculous cars,

But it's still a race!

I'm gonna put the pedal
to the metal

And try to make up some time.

Hyundai, don't fail me now!

I am back out on the track.

We're out on the track.

Amazing how much better it is

Without that engine block
in your face.

I already see the wreckage
of a half a dozen cars out here.

I'm actually getting
wheel spin with this thing.

It's so wet out here
and slippery,

Combined with the bald tires.

Past the camaro, he's got
too much power for the road.

Boy, this thing is sliding
all over the track.

Past the porsche 924.

You know,
except for the bald tires,

This car is actually running
pretty good.

This thing gets
excellent mileage.

The gas gauge hasn't moved.

If we pass one car
every 15 minutes

For the next 20 hours,

We could actually win
this thing.

There's a guy in front of me
with a dog on his roof.

We'll get him.

Whoa, I'm sliding like crazy.

There is no traction at all.

I got that corvair in my sights,

But he's still
a little way ahead of me.

We'll get him.

Oh, he's got the--he's ahead
of me on the straights.

Only place to catch him
is the corners.

I'm fixated on the corvair.

I think I got him right here.

I got the corvair
getting in the corner, but--

Whoa, whoa!

We humans love to make
anything fast.

-200 miles an hour!
-Woo!

fast food, fast cars,

Fast planes.

Incoming!

Why? Because speed
is the best way

To make the mundane fun

And to make the conventional
unconventional.

Take cutting the lawn,
for example.

I'm here at
the honda proving ground

In the middle
of the california desert

On a 100-degree day
to help set a speed record,

Not for cars or motorcycles
which, as you know, honda makes,

But for another honda product:
A lawn mower.

While organized
lawn mower racing

Has been around for decades,

The competitors tend to run
on mostly stock mowers

With stock engines
on courses designed

To keep them
at stock speeds.

How boring is that?

Enter the mean mower v2,

Which honda's engineers
have designed to go

A record-setting

And it's still cuttin' lawns!

Now this was built in England.

James, come on in.

We don't just have the mower,
we also have...

The man who built it.

-Good to see you, my friend.
-And to you, good to see you.

now, tell us...You know...

I just wonder how you approach
a corporate entity like honda.

-How do you get that past them?
-Very tentatively.

They were quite concerned,
as you can imagine.

We built the first mean mower
back in 2014.

We knew we could do
a little bit more.

We made it harder,
faster, and meaner,

And this is a product, really.

this meaner mower
has a few parts

From one of honda's
garden tractors,

And it's got some custom parts
made from computer-aided design

And 3d printing,
and it's all powered

By the engine from honda's
most advanced motorcycle,

The fireblade sp superbike.

Now, in the stock motorcycle,

It's about 189 horsepower,
correct?

And that's
an incredibly fast bike.

-This is making more?
-About 200.

it's gotta be faster
than the bike, is it?

yeah, well, at the moment,
it's geared for 160.

-Right.
-If you dare go that fast.

and of course you have the
lawn clipping bag in the back.

You have to have that.
It can actually cut grass.

Yeah, yeah, it'll cut grass.
It's got two cutting heads in.

okay, now, do you drive it?
Are you the--

we've got craig over here.

-Craig, how are you doing?
-How you doing, mate?

now you're a racer
by trade, right?

uh, by trade, no.

My trade, I actually build
race cars for a living.

I fit in this,
so that makes me qualified.

this is unproven technology.

In some ways, it's scarier.
Is it frightening to drive?

um, bit of a risk factor and
bit of unknown to it, so yeah.

And you're going for speeds
that have not been done before.

That's right, yeah,
that's right.

So we'll, you know,
we'll aim to hit...

-Over a quarter mile?
-Yeah, over a quarter mile.

-You don't even know.
-We haven't really tested that.

we're going into the unknown
a little bit, aren't we?

no, you and I aren't.
We're fine!

yeah, you just stay there.

we're going into the pub.

He's going into the unknown.

We'll be eating a burger down...
It's a shame about...

We can get another driver
tomorrow.

No, we're right here, so...

All right, well, listen,
good luck.

-Cheers, thanks, mate.
-Okay, good, good.

And let's get
the last known photograph.

This way I can own the picture
and I can sell it

And sell it all over the uk.

The goal: 150 miles an hour,

Crushing honda's previous record
of 116.

The track:

A quarter mile of hot asphalt.

The finish line:

A sweaty comedian.

-And we're good to go?
-Yeah, good to go.

This is goofy, but exciting.

See how he did.

How did it feel?

uh, fast.

what did you get?

-Uh, 123.
-123?

yeah, it wasn't
very clean though.

I had a bit too much wheel spin
on the start.

-Gonna try it again?
-Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

try it again.

yeah, yeah.

That was a lot cleaner.

-What'd you get?
-128.

-Yeah, that was pretty good.
-You gonna do it again or what?

-Yeah, why not.
-Okay, another one, okay.

Which makes craig
the fastest landscaper alive,

But he's determined
to push the envelope.

-How'd you feel?
-That's it, mate.

-128?
-128, yeah.

That was as good
as that second run.

I think with the temp,
you know, the air temp,

The engine obviously
doesn't like hot air,

So I don't think you're gonna
get much better than that.

The hotter it is, the lower
the record's gonna be.

-Well, 128, that's a new record!
-That's a new record.

That's not bad, that's not bad.

you are in the record books!

There you go,
with mario andretti

And dan gurney

And the american lawn mower
association.

-All the poster boys.
-What's next, snow blowers?

Now it's time once more
for jay hits the streets.

You tell me which car is fake,
but the other two are real.

The isuzu giga 20 light dump...

Toyota brickhaus,

Mazda scrum wagon.

-The first one.
-The light dump?

-No.
-What?

-Brickhaus?
-I think I'm going with the--

-Yeah, with that one.
-Which one?

-The brickhaus.
-The brickhaus.

-Brickhaus is correct.
-Yeah, we got one!

-You got one!
-The toyota brickhaus.

-Is the fake one?
-Yeah.

amazing. Wow.

-One of these is not a real car.
-Okay.

the toyota deliboy,

The daihatsu mighty boy,

Or the suzuki rude boy.

I'm gonna go with a.

-A, the toyota deliboy?
-Deliboy.

-That doesn't sound real.
-That is a real car.

-Is it a real car?
-That is a real car, sir, yes.

-One of these is not real.
-Okay.

The daihatsu naked,

The great wall coolbear,

Or the hyundai precious.

I'm gonna go with the naked
on that one.

-Daihatsu naked?
-Is not real?

-No, no, that was a real car.
-Oh, my gosh, that's terrible.

You could drive a deliboy naked,
you know that?

Yeah, I got rear-ended
by a naked deliboy.

That's terrible.

Coming up...

we gave you
a perfectly good car.

Do you not know how to drive?

We're back
at the 24 hours of lemons,

The endurance race
full of $500 cars

Driven by lunatics.

Uh-oh, looks like
I'm in trouble.

jay, we gave you
a perfectly good car.

Do you not know how to drive?

no, no, I swerved to avoid

A kid on a tricycle.

I see, so you saved the day.

well, I saved a life.

so you should get a trophy
is really what you're saying.

no, I'm not asking for anything.

all right.
Clearly I'm not gonna get

Any sense of guilt
or remorse from you,

So I'm just gonna go away.

that's the greatest thing
about hollywood.

And with that,
my first shift is over.

We've still got 20 hours
to go though,

So it's time to bring in
the rest of the s.W.A.P. Team.

Next driver,
graham "the scot" reed.

Can you reach it?

No, I'll let you put
your hands down there.

You can't find anything
down there?

Most pit stops are
around four seconds.

This one's...

all right, come on back.

-Like the wind, laddie!
-Turn the other way!

-Other way, other way!
-No, the other way!

-Other way!
-Now put it in forward.

The pedal on the left.

It's an auspicious start.

Despite the slowest pit change
of all time,

Graham managed to pull us
ahead a few spots

During his four hours
behind the wheel,

But then he wasted time

With completely
groundless complaints.

it's sliding all over the place.

I think that leno driver
used up all the tires.

-Sure.
-Taking the next four hours,

Frank jelnicki.

You know, I think
the hot dog porsche people

Are mad I didn't choose
their car for the race.

Kicking off day two,
rich .

it's starting to rain,

And I'm not wearing my galoshes.

Real slippery right now.

Car's just sliding,
sliding, sliding.

despite the rain
and those terrible tires,

Rich put up a clean leg
and got us back

In the middle of the pack.

Next driver: Spank.

You know, considering how
he acts off the track,

I can't wait to see
how he drives.

You ever wish you could
kinda unsee something?

And now taking the anchor leg,
our best driver, denise korenek.

ready to rock and roll.

we were counting on her lead
foot to jump us up in the ranks,

But you never know what
other drivers are gonna do.

A devastating hit for denise,

But she still manages
to shake it off

And finish her leg of the race.

Despite everything
that's happened,

Somehow the hyundai
is still running.

-Give it a shot.
-Can I check your oil, sir?

and the team is letting me take
the final lap around the track.

-You're good to go.
-Ready to go?

So now the million-dollar
question: How did we do?

Well, we finished in 47th place,

But you know,
with a race like this,

It's not really about
winning or losing,

Especially when you're 47th.

It's about having fun and racing
with your friends and--

Who am I kidding?
Of course I wanted to win.

Forty-seven, really?

here comes leno,
here he comes, all right!

hey, that was fun, you guys.

what's it like to take
your first checkered flag

In a lemons race?

better than yesterday,
it wasn't raining.

that's true, and you know what,

Your times actually continued
to improve all weekend,

-So congratulations.
-Yeah, in five or six years,

I should have this down.

hey, you know what,

Your time in the rain

Is still faster than his
in the dry.

huh, I'll take
whatever victory I can.

all right, man, that's awesome.

-All right!
-That was great fun.

How old are those tires,
by the way?

you know,
you can drive a race car

Or you can drive
the car that you got.

Those are the tires that came
on the car when I bought it.

you don't have to convince me,
I believe you.

For more cool cars,
go to jaylenosgarage.Cnbc.Com.

Buckle up, folks,
it's time to assess and caress

With donald osborne.

since this episode is all
about unconventional vehicles,

We needed a truly
unconventional appraiser.

That's why we have
donald osborne.

-Tell us what we have here.
-Well, jay, we've got

A 1988 nissan pulsar
nx se sportbak,

A 1956 eshelman
adult sports car.

-Adult sports car, all right.
-Adult sports car.

And a 1968 buick lesabre,
the "nauti-mobile."

-Sort of a nautical theme.
-Exactly.

start with that one, tell us
what makes that unconventional.

this one is probably
one of the wackiest things

That ever made it past
a corporate approval committee.

It is a convertible
sports wagon.

So it's the 1980s,
so t-tops, of course,

Are absolutely
the thing to have.

And this car came with a sort
of normal, fastback hatchback.

-Right, it comes this way.
-Exactly,

And this optional sportbak...

...Turns it into
a sports wagon.

So it gave you
incredible flexibility.

So you had the standard
hatchback coupe,

You had this if you wanted
to make it a sport wagon

And carry lots of things
around in it,

Or you could also take
the roof off completely

And have sort of an open
roadster pick-up kind of a feel

With the t-tops off.

But it looks like a lot of work
to take this off,

Not something the average owner
could do in the garage.

It was probably the work of
three of your strongest friends.

So it never really caught on.

no, it didn't, unfortunately.

Now, for something which
is absolutely practical,

The eshelman adult sports car.

well, I mean, the thing
that makes it funny

Is the "adult sports car,"

'cause it looks like
a child's toy

To any normal person.

It's not a sports car,
it's not even a car.

it's not a sports car?

Jay, it's got those rockets
on the side.

-Oh, look at the rockets.
-So, clearly, it's a sports car.

Eshelman is a company
that made lawn mowers,

And they made
riding lawn mowers,

And not surprisingly,
this is powered

By a briggs & stratton engine.

-It's the full-size--
-I just like the idea...

"hi, girls."

Well, let's move
onto my favorite,

The '68 buick, it's a lesabre?

buick lesabre, the nauti-mobile,

An art car created
by pippa garner.

This absolutely fascinating
creation was her idea

Of a nautically themed car.

You drive from the rear.

She's opened up
the rear window of the lesabre

And grafted on a 1971 datsun
steering wheel and dashboard.

-Right.
-And it's all controlled

Through a, frankly,
rube goldberg-esque system

Of levers and relays,
and it's absolutely astonishing

To see inside.

and you get in like this?

you get in like that,
exactly, climb over.

You notice also that
you're very safe here

Because you've got
the nautical wheel

With jesus in the middle
so that he can guide you...

-Oh, yeah, look at that.
-...As you sail along.

And, you know,
you've got the space

For a passenger up there
and another passenger inside.

-Below deck!
-Below deck, exactly.

This is literally
a land yacht.

oh yeah, you pull up next
to an eshelman at a stoplight...

Interest in vehicles like this,
in art cars,

Not simply the cars that
have been painted by artists,

But actually sort of created
art objects, has really grown.

You see a lot of this has come
out of the burning man events.

People come up
with wacky ideas for vehicles

That actually can be driven.

But this one
is not running right now.

It's not running right now,
again,

Maintaining all of the linkages
is a bit tough.

and I would imagine
turning this wheel

Will cause that column to flex.

My trouble with most--
most artists is,

They're not engineers,
you know,

So they don't get out
and drive their art.

They give it to me,
and then--

"oh, oh, the steering wheel,
the column snapped. Be careful."

so, which of these three
do you think has had

The highest appreciation
in the last five years?

well, to me, unconventional

Is just another word for "fun."

So, this, it's a marketing idea
that just didn't catch on.

This is just silly,

It just looks like any toy
from the '50s and '60s.

This one just makes me smile.
It makes me laugh.

I would love to drive this
down the street with a cap on

And just sort of wave to people.

So I personally would pay
the most for this one

Because I think it's
the most fun.

So you would go for a sale
on the nauti-mobile.

yes.

well, about five years ago,

An art car
such as the nauti-mobile,

You might've been able to
purchase it for about $65,000.

Interest has grown tremendously
in vehicles like this,

So today it would probably be
closer to $80,000 for that.

The nissan pulsar,

About five years ago,
a sportbak,

If you could find one,
they're fairly rare,

Would be about $6,500.

That would be
about $7,000 today.

The eshelman,
very, very rare,

About five years ago probably
would've cost you about $15,000.

Today, it'd cost you
about $28,000

To buy an eshelman like this.

So our appreciation sweepstakes
winner is the adult sports car.

No, it would cost you $28,000

'cause you're the only one
who would pay that

For this stupid thing.
