- You wanna know the most important quality
I think a surfer should have?
This is gonna sound seriously uncool, I know.
But I'm gonna tell you anyway.
To me the single most important thing is this, good manners.
When you look out and see the water like this,
it's perfect right?
No one around you've got the whole ocean to yourself,
but there aren't too many days like this one.
This is what it's like most of the time.
Crowded lineup with stacks of surfers
all trying to catch the same wave.
♪ Edging me ♪
- [Loren] It brings out the best in people's manners
and also the worst.
- Look at that crowd will you?
Every man and his dog's out there, and his cat,
and his pet rabbit too.
- Let's just hope they all know the road rules.
♪ You naturally ♪
- [Loren] One of the worst things you could ever do
in the surf is to drop in on somebody.
The rule is that if you're up first, then you own the wave,
if you're not first, then you just have to lump it.
Having to back off from a good wave is really frustrating,
but that's what you have to do.
If you don't then things can get very ugly.
When someone else steals your wave you only have two choices
crash into them, or bail out.
- Hey, that was my wave!
- [Loren] Either way it leaves you feeling pretty mad.
Then there are the road blockers.
These people are so greedy for their next wave
that they paddle straight towards the center of the lineup.
Which is exactly where everyone wants to take off from.
- Look out!
- [Loren] Some people just don't care
what danger they put themselves in,
or anyone else for that matter.
- Hey, don't you have any brains?
- Ah get lost.
- What was going on out there today?
- Stupidity, selfishness, you name it.
- I hope they don't plan to hang around for too long.
- Yeah well I got news for you,
with the summer coming it's only gonna get worse.
I mean they where all experienced surfers out there
they should've known better.
- Was it all of them, or just a few?
- No just three or four of them.
- That's all it takes.
- Did anyone else have a go on them?
- Not that we heard.
- It's so unfair that three or four
can wreck it for everyone.
- Well I agree but unfortunately
there's a lot of ignorant surfers out there
who don't know any better.
- Oh they knew they where just bad mannered and selfish.
- So how did you respond?
- What do you mean?
- When the guy dropped in on you what did you do?
- Well I yelled at him of course.
- And what about you Bridget
when you saw that guy paddling towards you.
- The same, I mean what else could I do?
- Well that's the issue then isn't it?

- If all you can do is yell at someone
doesn't that make you just as bad as them?
- But I was yelling at him to try
to avoid an accident.
- Yelling out a warning is one thing.
Shouting out abuse is something else.
- Yeah, but the guys they were
yelling at were clearly in the wrong.
- Yeah, they shouldn't be allowed to get away with this.
- Well no one's saying they should.
- Well then what these guys are ignorant bullies.
You can't let people like that
just walk all over you without doing something.
- Maybe you should've tried talking to them.
- There's no way they would have listened to us.
- How do you know?
- It's just the kind of guys they were.
- You don't know that, you never even talked to them.
- It's okay for you to be all calm
and logical about it, you weren't there.
- Adam's got a point though Cassie.
Sometimes all it takes is having
a quiet word with someone.
Then once you explain things to them
they'll come around.
- One thing I can definitely tell you:
Shouting at somebody's gonna get you no where.
It's just gonna get them fired up.
- Well then what we just let the bullies walk all over us?
- No but the first step should always
be to try to talk to them.
You might be surprised at how
reasonable most people really are.
(unbeat music)
- So Bec, Gary and Adam all
make good sense.
But good sense and surfing don't always go together.
And just as Cassie had predicted
the problem was about to get a whole lot worse.
The first people summer brings out are the lifesavers.
If anyone has the right to rule the beach it's them.
And normally everyone's happy enough
to go along with them.
- Hey guys you're the Solar Blue team right?
- Yeah that's us.
- Cool. Now I'm sure I don't need to tell you,
but let's just get a few ground rules
established all right?
- Sure! - Alrighty.
The area between the flags is for swimmers,
so I don't wanna see any surfboards meters either side
or meters out to sea.
Y'all got that?
- Loud and clear.
- All right if we can remember that,
we'll all have a really happy summer together.
- You won't have to worry about us.
- We'll keep right out of your way mate.
- Thanks guys that's all I need to know.
- So where do you think we should head.
- I think the point's looking good again today.
- [Edge] Yeah, that'll do me.
Let's go.
- [Loren] So far so good.
The lifesavers had made things clear.
We were happy to agree.
Everyone had their space,
and we could all do our own thing.
Then the summer threw up its second challenge.
- Anyone wanna challenge for biggest air?
- I'm up for it. - You're on Parker.
- A few experienced surfers might
be rude and aggressive but it's the inexperienced surfers
you really need to watch out for.
And the worst of all are the ones
who think they're better than they really are.
These guys aren't just stupid.
They're seriously dangerous.
- I don't like the look of this.
- You gotta stop thinking of every
other surfer as the enemy Cassie.
- No I don't think that I'm just
suspicious of boys who hunt in packs.
- [Adam] They've got a right to surf here too ya know.
- Yeah well so long as they remember
that I also have rights.
- Come on stop being so paranoid.
(upbeat rock music)
- [Loren] As it turned out, Cassie's instincts were right.
In doing their jumps the boys took off their leg ropes,
and when you do that,
your board becomes an out of control m*ssile.

- Cassie look out!
(Cassie yells)
- Cassie are you okay?
- No it hit my arm.
- Hang on I'll help you.

- [Loren] We should have known it was too good to be true.
Just when we thought we had the waves to ourselves,
the summer dropped its third challenge.
This time it was every surfer's worse nightmare.
- Oh where did these guys come from.
- They must have come from around the point.
- [Loren] Oh no, that's all we need.
- Whatever you do,
don't get between them and the shore.
- [Loren] When you see big boards like Malibus
you get out of their way fast.
They're like ton trucks that can demolish
anything in their path.
And when they're ridden by old guys
who desperately trying to prove how cool they still are,
the combination is lethal.
- Look out!

- These guys are taking up the whole break.
- They're pushing us towards the swimmers area.

to get hammered by the regular surfers,
the young surfers, the old surfers,
and the lifesavers.
Not a bad score when you think about it.
And even though none of it was our fault,
we were the ones copping the blame.
Whichever way you looked at it
some serious repair work was desperately needed.
Otherwise it was goodbye Blue Water Beach.
- Okay so this is the deal.
The long boarders will get their pick of the break
three days a week between : and : p.m.
And we get first pick four days a week.
- Okay so what happens on the days
when we have second choice?
- Yeah does that mean we can't surf?
- No, no, we'll just go to the other end,
or drive to another beach.
- And the lifesavers' cool with that?
- Yes as long as we stay well away from the swimmers.
- Okay well what about the regular surfers?
The days when there's like a million
others in the line up.
- You'll just have to fit in with them.
Follow the basic rules,
show some consideration.
They have rights too.
- Yeah but it's the ones who don't respect
other people's rights that are the problem.
