- Both competitors for the boys semi-final head out.

Eagle start in two minutes.

- You're gonna have to dig deep, Eric.

- Mike's on fire today, Eric.

- Doesn't matter who wins the semi.

Neither one of you have got a hope in the wave

of beating me in the final.

- [Eric Voiceover] When I first got in,

I thought it was gonna be pretty simple.

Surf well, win the comp, travel the world,

become a surfing superstar.

And then, I got to know who I was up against.

(waves crashing)

♪ The air is thick ♪

(waves crashing)

♪ Why don't you come on round ♪

So maybe I haven't got a hope in Hawaii,

but I reckon Mike surfs like he was born there.

(crowd cheer and clap)

- [Announcer] And the winner of the semi-finals is...

Mike Kruze! - Mike Kruze.

- No amount of wax will save you, Mike.

- So nice of you to be concerned.

When I win the pro-tour, I will be remembering

all of the people who encouraged me along the way.

- Don't you love it?

How humble these two are.

(laughs)

- You surfed well out there today.

You almost had him.

- Almost.

- [Eric Voiceover] I can see it all now.

This is how it's gonna be.

Six weeks time, the final Solar Blue surfer,

me on the beach, with the girls,

watching these two fight it out

for the spot on the pro-tour.

- So, the hard news is, in six weeks,

four of you will be going home.

On the upside, two of you will be competing in the first

round of the pro-tour, in Brazil.

And we just got confirmation of the dates.

- I think I'm going to faint!

- Well, before you faint, I need to know that all of you

have at least six months travel time left on your passports.

If you don't, now's the time to get extensions organized.

Can I see some nods, something to let me know

that you're here?

Eric, can you nod?

- No, I can't Simmo, I don't have a passport.

- You don't have a passport?

That's all right, uh, we've still got time to get one

organized, you'll need photos, birth certificate,

I've got forms in the office.

You fill in what you can, I'll do the rest.

- Brazil!

- Brazil! - Yes!

- Can you imagine two of us in Brazil?

- Um, yeah, it'd be weird, eh?

- Carnival in Rio, the Amazon.

Did you ring your Mom and get her to post

a birth certificate?

- Um, no, not yet.

I was, thirsty.

- No passport, no carnival in Rio.

- I know.

Oh, you see, there was this little thing I was sure

I had to do besides get a passport.

Oh, that's right, win the competition!

Don't know how that slipped my mind!

- What are you on about?

- (sighs) I know you can make it Ames.

I just hope you get used to Mike or Corey's company,

because it's not gonna be me.

- Well, not with that attitude it won't.

- I'm not trying to be down on myself,

I think I'm a good surfer, okay?

I just, I think they're better.

- You've beaten them both before.

Why this sudden doubt now?

- I've beaten them both when I'm having a wicked day

the same day they're having a bad one, you know?

And the chances of me being on fire

the same day they are both not performing well,

which has to be finals day by the way,

it's just not that likely Ames.

- [Amy] I've never heard him talk like this before.

- It's mad.

He's one of the best natural surfers around.

- He wouldn't have got in if they didn't think he could win.

- I know that.

But it's not what I know that counts.

- So what are we gonna do about it?

- Maybe Simmo should know what's going on.

- Nice morning for it!

- Yeah.

- I'm not sure Eric would be too happy

about Simmo knowing.

It was kind of a private conversation.

- Private as in, you and Eric?

And me, and Brooke?

- This is serious, isn't it?

I'm not just being a drama queen?

- No, it's really serious.

With six weeks to go, you should all be peaking.

Physically and mentally.

- That's what I thought. - Not on a slide like this.

- Who's on a slide?

Hello?

- Eric.

- Brooke! - What?

It's not like we're plotting to pull his toenails out.

And you know, maybe they can help.

- The question is, does he want our help?

- He doesn't even know that I accidentally told everyone.

- Remind me not to share any dark secrets with you.

- Well, whether he likes it or not,

there has to be a way to turn it around.

- Turn what around?

- Um...

- Your attitude.

- We know you've been having some doubts

and we just wanna help.

The nice guy that finished first.

- He won the world championships four times in a row,

didn't he?

- That's right.

- Check out the shape on that board.

- [Simmo] I know.

Short, wings, swallow tail twin fin.

She's beautiful, isn't she?

Corey, you do techno geek, how does this auction

thingamajig work?

- Well you put your starting bid here.

- Yep.

- [Corey] And your top price here.

- Uh-huh.

- And if anyone else beats your bid,

it'll just keep going up by $ until it reaches your limit.

- Gotcha.

- Hang on, don't send--

That, yeah.

- Why not?

- Well, the auction doesn't close 'til midnight tonight,

so anyone with half a brain

wouldn't bid 'til minutes before the end.

- Right, well maybe I'll scare off those half-brainers

by bidding bold and bidding early, yeah?

- Yep, anything's possible.

We can check back later and see how things are going.

- Good, fingers crossed, eh?

(synth music)

- What?

- You don't think you're getting away from us helping

you that easily, do you?

- I guess not.

- So winning is % mental and % physical, right?

- Right.

- So technically, we all have the same fitness.

We all have the same skills,

so we just have to get your mental act into gear.

- How do we do that?

- You just have to figure out exactly what you do

on days that you win, and turn it into a ritual.

Some guys put their left shoe on first.

Doesn't really matter what it is,

just as long as it gets you into the zone.

- I kiss my board.

- I make deals with myself.

Like, I can't use my mobile 'til the next comp

if I don't win.

- There's a guy on the circuit who has a lucky pair

of undies. - Lucky undies?

- Yeah. - Ugh, that's enough

info for me!

Anyone want a drink?

- Yeah, me.

- It doesn't have to be a pair of undies.

It can be anything, just as long as you believe in it.

- Right.

Okay, well, there's this song I sometimes sing before I win.

Yeah, and I guess I'm singing it because I feel confident.

And when I feel confident, I win.

- That's it.

- Perfect.

In your mind, that song's connected with winning.

So the more you sing the song,

the more likely it is that your mind will swing

into winning mode.

- Hey guys.

The wind's turned and there's some beautiful

waves down the beach.

Simmo thinks it'll be good practice.

And just so we take it seriously,

he's making it for three extra points.

- Okay!

- Time to make some music.

Let's go, come on.

- What, I'm singing, I am singing!

- You hear any singing, Mike?

- Nope, can't say I do, Corey.

- I'm singing to myself.

- Sorry, Eric, not good enough.

- What, when I'm on the pro-circuit,

I'm supposed to sing out loud?

- By then, you won't have to.

For now, I'd be putting everything I had into it.

I've got what it takes.

I'm a pro-surfer on the world circuit.

Eric Tanner is a winner.

- I know they're a bit goofy.

But they always work for me when I'm having a rough patch.

- Well, I'm willing to give anything a go.

- Well, they say you can't have what you can't imagine.

- So this is to give my imagination a nudge?

- Call it positive brainwashing.

Last thing you see at night,

first thing you see in the morning.

I've recorded some affirmations.

If you listen to it while you sleep,

it's supposed to get right inside your brain.

- Oh thank you Brooke, that's so nice.

- You'd do the same if it was one of us.

No, no, no, I'd be dancing on your doubts.

- Yeah, right.

I've got what it takes.

I'm a surfer on the pro-tour.

- [Brooke] It is Solar Blue finals day.

And I, Eric Tanner, have just ridden the winning wave.

I stand on the beach as the winner of the competition.

- I gotta tell ya, I think he's the most talented surfer

in the entire universe!

- [Brooke] I can hear the crowd cheering.

I can feel the weight of the trophy as I hold it high.

- No, there's been a mistake, this says third place!

Third place trophy!

- [Brooke] I accept the winning tickets to Brazil,

for the first round of the pro-circuit.

- No, wait, these aren't plane tickets!

These are train tickets!

One way, back home!

I didn't sleep a wink last night

with all those affirmations.

- No kidding.

- If anyone wants any favors from Simmo,

today's probably a day to ask.

- That's cool.

Hey, the buyer's agent usually charges a commission.

I'll happily take mine in points.

- Hey yeah, that's an idea, then you can donate

Well, we were thinking about those really successful

surfers, the ones who've go their minds

totally under control.

- And, we've thought about the way you approach comps.

You're friendly, you're talking to everyone,

chatting about conditions, and strategy.

- See that break out there?

That's where I'll be sitting.

'Cause I was talking to a guy who surfed here last year,

he reckons it's prime,

reckon it's the only place to win here.

So that'd be my advice, you know.

That's what I'll be doing.

Yep, that's the thing to do all right,

'cause if you go any other point, it's rubbish,

you know what I mean?

And back the other way it's rubbish too, so.

Yeah, but don't go blabbing to everyone,

not everyone needs to know.

It's all right if you guys know, 'cause you're mates,

you know what I mean?

You're saying I talk too much.

- I'm saying, maybe if you didn't give so much of your

energy away, if you got into the zone

before you hit the sand.

Maybe, it'd work.

- Okay.

I'll give it a go.

My competitors will get frostbite, if they even look at me.

- Cool.

You can try it in the expression session this morning then.

- All right, we're gonna do the fellas first.

You've got minutes.

Once you hear the air horn go,

catch as many waves as you can.

It's a free-for-all, so let it all hang out.

Where's Eric?

- Here he comes.

- [Eric Voiceover] I am Eric Tanner.

And I am totally focused.

- Come on, Tanner.

Time to express.

- [Eric Voiceover] I am Eric Tanner,

and I am Frosty The Snowman.

- Eric, you've still got your sunnies on.

(air horn blasts)

- Eric.

- I am-- - Eric.

- Yeah?

- What are you doing?

- I was affirming how focused I am.

- Well, you focused so much, you missed the air horn.

- Whoops.

It's no good, Amy.

None of this is me.

You know, I've tried so hard to think positive,

not be friendly to people, sing lucky songs.

- Don't give up, Eric.

It's the first time you've tried any of it.

- I appreciate everyone's concern, I really do.

But I just think it's better if I stick to my own g*ns.

What I was doing before.

- Yeah, which would be fine if it worked.

- Sorry, I wasn't trying to eavesdrop.

Are you all right?

- Yeah, I just, I'm drowning in help, you know?

- They're just trying to find a way to show you

what they already know.

You can do it.

Do you remember what you said when I first met you?

You need your fears to get in.

When I asked you what you would do if you didn't get in,

you said you didn't even let the thought into your head.

You said it was like thinking about dying.

If you think about it, it might happen.

What's changed?

- I don't know.

I just, I look at the other guys and Corey,

he's so prepared, he's ready for anything and everything.

Mike, he's so cool.

He's done everything and then some.

- So?

- Well, I just go out there on the day

and hope for the best, you know?

And it's not the most complex strategy in the world.

- Well, if you win it, it wouldn't matter if your strategy

was to sleep with an ice cream container on your head.

If you don't think you can win,

no strategy in the world is gonna save you.

If you don't think you can win, you should go home.

Now.

I know this, because I was in the same spot last year.

Different reason, but the same deal.

If I hadn't sorted it, I couldn't have won.

If you don't sort it,

you might as well start packing.

If I don't believe I can do it, I should just go home.

- It doesn't matter.

All that matters for now, is that it's there.

- (sighs) We've got a problem with Eric.

- Why do I suddenly feel like a landing party

about to meet a bunch of unhappy locals?

- [Amy] Someone going somewhere?

- Maybe.

- Am I going somewhere, they're my bags.

- Eric, I just wanna say, Fly isn't normally a dobber.

In fact, things have to get pretty serious

before she spills the beans.

- Meaning?

- Meaning, she's finally given you up.

You don't think you can win.

- Look, I know that's what I said,

but since then, Fly and I have talked

and come to the conclusion that I kind of sort of must

think I can win, otherwise, I'd go home.

- Kinda, sorta.

He's not convincing me.

It's not fair on the others mate.

They're in serious preparation mode,

and not just for the final comp here.

That's just the beginning.

- Okay, well what would convince you?

- I have to see it, Eric.

I have to see that you know you can whip Corey

or Mike or anyone else who wants to take a shot

for that matter.

If you show me that, maybe we have something to talk about.

- What difference does that make?

Even if I do beat them, it doesn't prove anything.

They could just be having a bad day.

- True.

So we have to handicap you enough to compensate,

in case they are having a bad day.

- Handicap?

- She was cutting edge when she was first shaped.

But compared to Mike and Corey's boards,

it's fair to say, you're gonna have to work a little harder.

Corey, Mike?

If I get even a whiff of you two taking it easy,

you'll lose points.

You understand?

no-one expects you to win on technique.

on the last wave?

- Yeah, I did.

- Well come on!

If I didn't win with that in a real heat,

I'd be completely ripped off, right?

- Here we go.

- What, you two just did the same old, same old.

But I dug real deep and I think

I deserve to win, full stop!

(laughing)

- I think we've created a monster.

- [Eric Voiceover] It was them believing in me that did it.

That's what made me go looking for what was hiding inside.

'Cause sometimes, you get stuff wrong.

Even stuff about yourself.

And you know what?

I've never been so happy to be proven wrong

in my entire life.

But, I've only got one regret.

This will be in my passport for the next years.
