- [Narrator] Sometimes in life you have to take risks.

It can be scary, and there's always a chance you might fail.

Big time.

But when you take a risk and it pays off,

it's the greatest buzz you can ever get.

- Nice job.

Nice moves, champ. - Thanks.

- Keep that form up and the others won't stand a chance.

- If only. You coming in?

- No, I wanna wait a while,

see if that righthander picks up a bit.

- It might drop off all together.

- Guess I'll have to chance it; I'd rather go right.

- Always mister predictable, hey?

Don't you ever step outside your comfort zone?

- Not if there's no point.

- Suit yourself, risk taker.

(water splashing)

- Beat you! - You cheated!

- Me? Who was scrubbing my leg underwater?

- Well, who pushed me in at the start?

- Okay, dead heap. - Dead heap.

- Check out Corey.

- What's he so interested in?

- What else?

- He could just be admiring Rachel's technique.

You think he's got it bad?

- Seriously bad. (laughs)

- And Rachel? - Don't think she's noticed.

Yet. (laughs)

- Looks like he's all admired out for today.

- Probably going to have a cold shower. (both laugh)

- Oh, you are so cruel, Amy.

- Especially when I'm competing.

Two more laps? - Go!

(water splashes) - Cheat!

Didn't see you catch any waves (mumbles), Corey.

Problem with your board?

- No, just checking out the swell,

waiting for the right shapes.

- How were the shapes?

Any good ones out there?

- Uh, yeah, some of them were pretty good.

- Good shape is pretty important, don't ya reckon, Rach?

- Sorry?

- Corey was just saying there was

a good shape on the break today.

- Didn't really notice.

- You're such a stirrer.

- Right, people, this week's training plans.

Nice, refreshing change of routine.

- Aw, let me guess, training's canceled,

we get to sleep in, eat pizza and watch movies all night.

- You wish.

- What's wrong with our current program?

I thought we were doing okay?

- You were. - So...

- So it's time to step up to the next level.

No point cruising along in the third gear

for the rest of the year.

- What's that mean exactly?

- A few new routines and an increase in the amounts

we have to do for the old ones.

- How big of an increase?

- About %. (group complains)

- It's all right, I'm not expecting

you to hit the target straight away.

We'll work up to it over the next few weeks.

- If we don't die first.

(rock music)

- Glad you could join us, Eric!

All right, first exercise, paired sit-ups.

- How many? - .

- What!

- Time starts in seconds.

- You heard her, grab a partner and let's go.

- All right, go on, Rach, let's just get this over with.

- Looks like it's you and me, Corey.

- Yeah, you're right. - You wanna go first?

- Sure.

- Okay, three, two, one, go!

♪ Why am I so miserable ♪

♪ If these are ♪

- Are those two going to get together or what?

- If it was up to Corey, I'd say definitely.

He couldn't take his eyes off Rachel

at training this morning.

- (laughs) Wonder why she's not so keen.

- Don't know, she's really hard to read sometimes.

- Maybe she's playing hard to get.

- Trust you to think that.

Maybe Corey's not her type.

- Why not?

- They're just so different.

- So what? Opposites attract, you know.

- Not when they're that opposite.

- Bet you bucks they're together by the end of the month.

- bucks?

- Or, the loser gets to wax the other's board for a week.

- You know, I hate you when you're so sure of yourself.

- Go on, put up or shut up.

Now sit back and watch true love take its course.

(both laugh)

- All right everyone, textbooks out, please.

Chapter , the respiratory system.

Before we explore the miracles of breathing,

we have a class announcement, thanks Annette.

- Well, as everybody knows, the school

gym equipment is getting a tad old.

- Yeah, try pre-historic. (all laugh)

- So this year's fundraiser is devoted to replacing it.

(all talking) Every class has been asked

to organize an activity to help raise money,

and our year is going to be running a beauty contest.

(all cheering)

- All right, settle down.

- We need at least six entrants with the judging

to take place at the school fair next Saturday.

- What about the rest of us?

- Well, everyone else has to be part of a support group

to help the contestants to raise money.

I'll hand out entry forms at the end of the lesson.

- Excuse me, Mr. Savin?

Can I ask a question?

- What is it, Rachel?

- If we wanted to raise funds

some other way, can we do that?

- Annette?

- No, no, not really, sir.

I mean, if we don't have all of year involved,

then it's not gonna work.

- There's your answer.

Chapter , please.

- Can you believe it?

I mean, this is the st century.

- Something wrong?

- You heard Annette, a beauty contest.

- What's wrong with that?

- How bout it's sexist for a start.

- Sexist? - Of course it is!

Getting girls paraded around half-dressed

while everybody stares at them.

- Sounds pretty good to me. - Me too.

- Can't you guys be serious for one minute in a day?

- Come on, Rachel, it's a bit of fun.

What's the harm?

- It makes girls look stupid; that's what's the harm.

It's demeaning.

- You spend half your life in a bikini on the beach.

What's the difference?

- The difference is I'm there as me,

doing what I want to do, when I want, and how I want,

not lining up against other girls in front of

some dopey judges trying to decide who's got the

best butt and who's got the cutest face.

- It's not that bad.

- So it's okay, is it,

that girls are treated like lumps of meat?

- Well, I didn't say that.

- You didn't have to.

I'm going to study; the macho men here are all yours.

- (mumbles) - What's gone off her nose?

- [Brooke] You don't get it, do you?

- It's a beauty contest.

Okay, it might be a bit puerile,

but there's no need to freak out about it.

- You guys are so typical. - I'm going to the library.

- Me, too.

- What, you're going to the library during lunch time?

- What's wrong?

Shocked that girls can actually read?

- Mike, what just happened?

- They obviously don't like beauty contests.

- Yep, I gathered this much,

but why are they getting angry at us?

I mean, it wasn't our idea.

- Where are you off to?

- Nowhere, I'll see yous in class.

- Well, are you gonna walk away on me too?

- I should to prove I have the courage

to stand up for my opinion.

- What opinion? - I don't have one.

Does that make me a lazy, sexist, macho p?

- Definitely, let's eat.

- Yeah, okay.

(sentimental music)

(knocks) - Hi. - Hi.

- Mind if I come in?

- It's a classroom; you have as much right to be here as me.

- Listen, I just wanted to say I'm sorry.

I didn't mean to upset you before.

- Thanks, but it's not your fault.

I just happen to have strong views about some things.

- So I've noticed.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is I think

you're wrong about Eric, Mike and me.

We treat you the same as you treat us.

It's unfair to call it sexist.

- You're right, I agree,

which is why it's even more frustrating to hear

you guys go along with this dumb beauty contest thing.

- Because it's just a joke, that's why.

It's a fancy dress competition; it's harmless.

- No, it's not.

Guys don't go into competitions like this, do they?

- No, but--

- They want to judge by who they are,

not what they look like.

Why can't it be the same for girls?

- Okay, I hear what you're saying.

Let's just add it to the list of stuff we don't agree on.

- It's becoming a pretty long list.

- Yeah, what do you think that means?

- It means you better get out and let me study.

- On my way.

- So is it definite?

You Solar Blue kids aren't going to help

with the beauty contest?

- Sorry, Annette, it's just not for us.

- But everyone else is pitching in.

- We offered to help with one

of the other year's activities.

- That's not the point.

- What is the point?

- You guys act as if there's one set of rules

for Solar Blue and one set of rules for everybody else.

It's not fair, we should all be in it together.

- Sorry, Annette, but we just don't think it's right.

- Annette!

Hey, Annette, can I talk to you for a moment?

- What for?

Why should we bother listening to anyone from Solar Blue?

- It's about the beauty contest.

- Yeah, I've heard it from the girls, Corey.

I don't need to hear it from you too.

- Actually, you haven't heard everything.

Something new's come up.

- Which is?

(upbeat music)

- Can we speak somewhere a little more private?

- I don't think we made a lot of friends today.

- It's just Annette, no one else cares.

- Yeah, this time next week,

everyone will have forgotten about it.

- Who needs you anyway! - Yeah, up you, Solar Blue.

- Up you, Solar Blue!

Solar Blue, who needs you! (all laugh)

- (group chanting) Up you, Solar Blue!

Solar Blue, who needs you! - What's going on?

- Just keep walking.

(chanting continues)

- You still think no one cares?

- What do you think we should do?

- What can we do?

We just have to wear it.

- Is it just me or is the conversation

here tonight a bit dull?

- I got a call from the school today.

The principal?

He was disappointed that no one from

Solar Blue was taking part in the fundraiser.

Wanted to know why.

- Because it's stupid.

- Beauty contests went out in the s.

- And, if they didn't, they should have.

- So did you tell the principal that?

- No, we didn't think it'd be something he'd want to hear.

- Oh I see, so you're just gonna sit back,

do nothing and leave the fundraising to everyone else.

- As it turns out, we are taking part in the contest.

- Since when?

- Since this afternoon.

- So, Solar Blue will have an entrant?

- That's what I mean.

- Don't look at me.

- There's no way I'm going in it.

- As if.

- What are you talking about then?

- I looked at the rules for the competition,

and the only requirements for entrants is

that they must be in year .

- So it can't be Fly, she's year .

- And it can't be Jilly, I mean she's year (laughs) plus.

- Very tactfully phrased, Eric.

- So who is this mystery Solar Blue girl?

- We're not entering a girl; I'm going in it.

- (all laugh) Oh wow!

- Corey, that's outrageous.

- There's nothing in the rules that say a guy can't enter.

If we wanna raise funds and not be sexist,

then this is the way to do it.

- You're really serious about this, aren't ya?

- I like your style, man.

- But you've all gotta pitch in and help.

I need some serious fundraising to support me.

- No problem. - We can do that.

- Excuse me, I have just one question.

Why? Why would you put yourself through that embarrassment?

- Sometimes, you have to get outside your comfort zone.

Thought this might be a good way of getting outside mine.

- Sounds like a perfect way to me.

- Does that mean you'll be my campaign manager then?

- Sure, if you want.

- Absolutely.

- Hi everyone!

- [All] Hi!

- Looks great, I'm starving!

- Good to see everyone looking so happy.

Must have something to do with the new training regime, eh?

- Well, actually, we're celebrating Corey's big news.

He's going to be the Solar Blue entrant

in the Blue Water High beauty contest.

- Sounds good.

Can you just run that past me again?

(all laugh)

(whistle blows) - Go!

- Go, come on guys, sprint, come on, push it, go!

Last one back does another lap on the beach.

(intense rock music) - , .

- Okay, enough!

- Great going, guys, you've really raised the bar today.

- Might've raised the bar, but it's floored me.

- In another week, you'll be doing this on your rear.

Let's get some breakfast.

- That's the best thing anyone's said all morning.

- Hang on guys, team meeting.

Sorry, five minutes max, I promise.

We've got four days to raise as much money

for Corey as we can, any suggestions?

Well, in the absence of any better ideas,

looks like we resort to the old standbys.

Two teams, Brooke and Mike run a carwash;

Amy and Eric do a windscreen wipe.

- Whereabouts?

- Carwash down at the Surf Club carpark.

- Cute.

- I thought the windscreen wipe could happen outside

the school, grab the parents while the drop the kids off.

- We can do that.

- Yes, Eric?

- Just one small question, boss.

When exactly are we gonna do all this?

- Windscreen wipe before and after school.

Carwash after school. - It won't work.

You're forgetting about Simmo's new program.

- Yeah, we're training our butts off at exactly those times.

- Yeah, I have thought of that.

- And?

- And hopefully he'll be supportive.

I'm sure he will be.

- You've gotta be joking.

- It's only postponing things a week.

- A week?

In this sport, at this level, a week is a lifetime.

- We'll catch up, I promise.

- Rachel, the training program is serious.

It's carefully designed to peak at specific moments

throughout the year; we don't just do it for a laugh.

- Fundraising is a school requirement.

They're expected to participate.

- What are the other year 's doing to raise money?

- Doing door knocks, rattling tins outside shops.

- Exactly, stuff you could be doing,

and you could be doing it after training.

- But they've had a headstart.

Besides, we can't move in on their territory.

We have to do something no one else is.

- Time is against them, Simmo.

- Who's side are you on?

- Everybody's.

- You are really pushing the envelope on this.

- And it'd help our relationship with the school.

- And it'll definitely help our relationship

with the other kids.

- (sighs) All right, we'll put

the training program back a week.

- Thanks, Simmo.

- But you had better be ready to push yourselves

to the limit, beyond the limit.

- We really appreciate this.

(rock music)

- Is Corey really gonna go through

with this beauty contest thing?

- Yeah.

- I must be getting outta touch.

(whistles) (cat calls)

- Hi, gorgeous! (laughs)

- Looks like word's going around.

- Can't wait to see you in high heels, Corey!

- What color's your bikini? (all laugh)

- Starting to wonder if this is such a good idea.

- Aw, it's too late now.

Come on, we've got work to do.

- Okay, here's your weapons.

- Where'd you get these?

- School cleaner, we've got them for the rest of the week.

- Exciting. - All right, all set.

- Right, Eric?

- Oh, I can hardly wait, Amy, yeah.

- Have fun guys.

- Oh, just one more thing.

We all know what we're doing,

but what are you and Corey doing?

- Styling. - What?

- It's a beauty competition,

and I have to have three different outfits.

- Formal dress, smart casual and swimsuit.

- So, my campaign manager's taking me

down to the mall to get fitted out.

- I found some shops that'll lend us some clothes for free.

- Well, how wonderful for you both.

So while we're all washing cars and sweating away,

you'll be frolicking around playing dress up.

Is that right, Corey?

- It's a tough business, the beauty business.

Looking good is seriously hard work.

- Gonna take a bit more than an outfit

to make you look good, Corey.

- Hey, feel free to take my place anytime.

I'm always willing to make way for a prettier face.

- Okay.

- All right, guys come on, let's get a move on

or there will be no cars left to wash.

(upbeat music) - Two bucks? Two bucks?

- Can I clean your windscreen, $?

- Not bad for just a few days.

- Might take this up full time.

- It's fantastic, thanks guys, great stuff.

- Now just imagine how much we would've made

if you were actually beautiful, Corey. (all laugh)

- You really know how to hurt a guy.

- Oh, and may we ask how the styling went?

- Yeah, do we get a sneak preview?

- No way, I'm doing this once and once only.

- Aw, spoil sport.

- You nervous?

- Let's just say I'm doing my best not to think about it,

but, if you must know the truth,

no one will be happier when tomorrow's over than me.

- Come on, you're not gonna buy that.

- Well, feel I should buy something.

- Yeah, but not that.

- Oh, I don't know, might be a

good Christmas present for my aunt.

- You dislike her that much?

(laughs)

- Showtime folks.

Don't wanna miss Corey's big moment.

- I don't know if I'm ready for this.

- Oh come on, ya big grump.

- Thanks everybody!

Okay, a big welcome to our year fundraiser.

We have six entrants competing today,

and they will be assessed by our

three judges, Donna, Justin and Leanne.

(applause)

Without further ado, let's get the show on the road.

Ladies and gentlemen, the year beauty pageant.

(applause) (upbeat music)

Our first contestant is Michelle Hayes.

Michelle's captain of the school's softball team

and wants to work in graphic art when she leaves the school.

(applause) Second up, we have Linly Thompson.

Linly is in the debating team and aims to go

to business college when she graduates. (applause)

Our third contestant, ladies and gentlemen, Jenny Lowe.

Jenny is our class maths wiz, and she wants to study

computer science at uni. (applause)

Fourth up, we have Heidi Lee.

Heidi's into fashion and hopes to one day

work in one of the top fashion mags.

Good on ya, Heidi! (applause)

Fifth, we have Gail Winter.

Gail's got no idea what she wants to do

when she leaves school, but she does reckon

it has to be fun. (applause)

We do have one final contestant

who should be coming out any moment now.

Sure it won't be long now.

(crashing)

And here he is ladies and gentlemen,

our sixth and final contestant, Corey Petrie! (applause)

- Corey!

- Yeah, Corey!

- Corey's one of our surfers from the Solar Blue Academy.

He's told us that his ambition is to

never go in anymore beauty contests after this one.

(crowd laughs) (applause)

- That's all right!

- Ladies and gentlemen, please give another

round of applause for our six fabulous contestants.

- Ladies and gentlemen, the judges have made their decision.

First, our fundraiser of the year award for the contestant

who's team raised the most money, goes to Jenny Lowe.

(applause) (crowd cheering)

And now, for the big one, our judges' award

to the year beauty pageant winner goes to...

Heidi Lee. (applause) (crowd cheering)

- This is a travesty; Corey was gorgeous.

(Amy laughs)

- One moment, please, ladies and gentlemen.

The judges and I have one further announcement to make.

The judges have decided to confer a special award this year,

and they've title it the Gutsy Glam award

for showing grace under pressure.

And this award goes to none other than Corey Petrie!

(applause) (crowd cheering)

- Yeah, Corey!

(whistling)

- Yeah!

(rock music)

- Still waiting for that righthander to pick up?

- You know me, never take risks.

- A week ago, I would've agreed with you but not now.

- Oh?

- What you did today took a lot of guts.

Not many guys could've done that.

- Does that put me back in your good books, then?

- Let's just say I've changed my mind about you, Corey.

I seriously underestimated you.

- Thanks for the compliment.

I think it's a compliment.

- It is. You coming in?

- Why not?

Do you mind?

I get nervous when I surf outside my comfort zone.

- (laughs) That's so corny, it almost worked!

- Thanks.

- Hey, Brooke!

So, what's it gonna be?

bucks or wax my board for a week?

- What?

- See, told ya, didn't I?

- I so hate you when you're right. (Amy laughs)
