- I can't go any further.

- Come on guys, one more circuit and you're there.

- If I take one more step

I won't be able to surf for a week.

- But this is the bit that counts.

You guys think you can't go any further, but you can.

You have to dig deeper.

We're not done yet.

- You mightn't be done, Fly, but we are.

- [Fly Voiceover] So what's this say about me as a leader?

An elite bunch of super-fit surfers

and I can't even get them to finish a morning run.

Okay, get your breath and get the training boards.

We'll meet back here in ten.

- Look at it, Fly, it's perfect.

- It's screaming for us to surf it.

- I know, but we're scheduled for paddle practice

and you know it's something you all have to work on.

- I've got a better idea.

We'll still paddle out

we just get to surf back in as well.

- The exercise is about building arm strength, Corey.

- There'll be loads of paddling Fly, I promise.

- Tomorrow when the swell's dead

we'll do an extra paddling session.

Paddle our little butts off.

- But--

- Come on, Fly, you always tell us

we need to practice our surfing.

This way, we get to do both.

- Amy's right, Fly.

- But this isn't what was planned.

- It's the same result, though.

We'll paddle hard, promise.

- You watch, Fly.

It'll be the best paddling you've ever seen.

- [Fly Voiceover] That's another thing about leadership.

If the people you're supposed to lead

don't even listen to you,

then you're pretty much dead in the water.

- So, what?

We eat straight out of the pot?

- Well, it would save on washing up.

If you're gonna be all la-dee-da

you can get bowls then.

- Oh thanks Heath, you're so compassionate.

- It's my middle name.

- Well I suppose we're lucky

that we don't have a proper three-course meal

to slow us down.

- Any more whinging out of you lot

and you can have a no-course meal tomorrow, huh?

- Is anyone else wondering when we're gonna get to do

some proper skills training with Simmo?

- It's gross, we've been here nearly two months

and all we get is endless fitness stuff with Fly.

- Which is hardly the point

of coming to a place like Solar Blue.

- Well, why don't we talk to Simmo about it?

- [Brooke] I've tried.

- Me too.

As far as he's concerned

this routine's worked perfectly in the past

and we should all just put our heads in

and get on with it.

- That's really progressive, that is.

- It's about as progressive as Fly's exercise routine.

I mean, did you believe that stuff

about paddling this morning?

It was just so basic

it's kindergarten. (clears throat)

- [Eric] Yeah, I know.

- Fly, hey!

We're going to a movie later.

Wanna come?

- Thanks, but I think I'll stay in tonight.

- Oh c'mon, you can stay in the rest of your life

come out with us.

- Really, I don't feel like it tonight.

- Ah, good, you're all here.

Fly.

Heath, can you come down, man?

- [Heath] Yep, coming!

- Got some news.

There's gonna be some staff changes around here

somebody leaving, somebody coming.

- Who's leaving?

- Well it's sad, but it's true

Heath is finishing up this weekend.

- No way! - That sucks.

- And why's he going?

- Jilly's back from overseas.

- Can't we have Jilly and Heath?

- Yeah, we've just broke him in, Simmo.

- Hey, watch yourself, mate.

I'm a leader around here.

- [Amy] I think this calls for a party.

- A hi, bye party.

- [Brooke] Great idea.

- Yeah, well if you wanna make this movie in time

I suggest you discuss it in the car.

- Good one.

Fly must feel really great, now.

- Well it wasn't just me.

- [Amy] He's right, it was all of us.

- How much did she hear?

- Enough to know that we hate her training routines.

- It's not as if it isn't true, though, is it?

- She still shouldn't have to hear

us moaning about it behind her back.

- [Simmo] We all in?

- Someone's gotta say something.

- [Simmo] Seatbelts on.

- Simmo, when do you reckon you're gonna start

doing a bit more one-on-one training with us?

- All in good time.

Right now I want you to keep concentrating

on the basics with Fly.

- Oh, but we've been focusing on the basics

since we were five.

We know the basics.

- Good.

Then with more practice you'll know them

even better, won't you?

Where's Fly, she not coming?

- No, she's not coming.

- Someone get the door.

Fly, did something happen at training today?

'Cause when you left you were a happy camper

- I don't know, it's just not working out

like I thought it would.

This job, it's like I'm the same age as them

but I'm supposed to be in charge of them.

And they don't wanna listen.

- Are you sure you're not being oversensitive about things?

- I heard them talk.

They want Simmo, not me.

I don't blame them, really.

That's what I'd want too.

- Hey Fly, you won last year.

They've got a lot to learn from you.

- They don't seem to think so.

Anyway, enough.

Too boring feeling sorry for myself.

Wanna go and see our own movie?

- I've can't, I've got a date with a dark room.

- What for?

- Junior photographer wanted.

And I got an interview on Monday.

- Wow, that's great!

It's exactly what you've been waiting for.

- Yeah.

- Fly, where's Heath?

- He's coming.

Just readjusting his shirt for the fifth time.

- A bit nervy, eh? That's good.

Helps to have a few nerves

when you want to be at your best.

- Simmo, this job you've given me here.

- Yeah?

- I'm not sure.

What I mean is, I don't think I'm really cut out for it.

- That's too bad, eh?

'Cause I happen to think you are.

- That's all they are, setbacks.

Why won't anybody listen?

- How many times do you reckon

you changed the order of those photos?

- I don't know.

Six, seven hundred times?

I just wanna be sure

they get hit with the best shot as soon as they open it.

- Heath, enough.

The pictures are brilliant.

Leave 'em alone.

- What about my shirt?

Maybe I should've worn the yellow one.

- If they're looking at your shirt and not the pictures

you know you're in trouble.

Get in there, you'll be fine.

(mellow music)

- Mm-hm.

Over what period of time were these shots taken?

- Last year. I took them through the year.

- Hmm.

- Is something wrong?

- What I don't see here is a collection of shots

that covers a single event.

You know, like a surf carnival or something.

- Is that bad?

- Well what we need

is a photographer who can be a storyteller.

What I'm talking about is a series of six or seven shots

that gives us great idea of what actually happened.

- Well, I'm sure I can do that.

I know I can.

- Maybe Heath, but I'm seeing 'em here.

- So you don't think they're good photos then?

- They're good shots, very nice Heath.

But a photographer's gotta be a storyteller, right?

- Right.

- Thanks for coming in.

Heath, nice shirt.

Yeah bring him in, that'd be good.

- You're out already?

- Yeah.

He liked my shirt.

- Wanna lift back?

- Yeah, sure.

(rock music)

(waves crashing)

- Fly?

What are those two doing over there?

I told you to keep away from the rocks.

- And I told them that, too.

- You told them?

- Yup, but they don't listen to me.

None of them do.

And you don't either.

I told you I wasn't cut out for the job.

(rushing water)

- Oh no, here we go.

So, was it just those two?

Were you all there playing chicken?

(whistles)

(board thumps)

- I'll pay for a new board, okay?

- That's a start.

Who's gonna pay for the broken collar bone

or arm, or busted knee next time you do something this dumb?

- It's just so rare to get those steep little waves

out on a ledge right at the front.

- Pretty rare to get a place in this academy, too.

But if one of you gets injured

there's hundreds of kids queuing up to take your place.

Just so there's no confusion

if Fly tells you not to do something

you can be pretty sure you're not meant to do it.

- [Fly Voiceover] Why do they listen to Simmo

but not to me?

It's obvious isn't it?

He's a leader and I'm not.

It's that simple.

- Leave it.

It's got bad vibes.

- What?

I wore it to the interview today.

- How'd it go?

My photos are okay but my storytelling was up the creek

and my shirt, it's all wrong.

Can you please put it back in the bin?

- That's rotten Heath, I was sure you'd get it.

- Appeared the guy who interviewed me wasn't.

- Hey Heath, you seen Simmo?

- Yeah, office I think.

- [Fly] Thanks.

- He's a great kid, his photos are good.

I'm just asking you to give him a chance

to prove what he can do.

I know you're under pressure to fill the job.

Just give me a day to try and think of something.

I'm thinking Heath doesn't need to know about that call.

- What call?

But it was still nice of you to help him.

- I don't know what good it'll do.

He needs to see how Heath can cover a one day event

and there are no comps coming up for the next month.

- It was still nice of you.

What can I do for you?

- Well I'm here to see you about a job, too.

- You've got a job.

- Not one that I do very well.

You saw what happened today.

And Saturday's training was a farce.

They want a leader, Simmo.

They want you.

- They'll get me in good time.

Right now they've got you

and that's exactly what they need.

- Why?

- 'Cause they need to concentrate on the basics.

- But they know the basics.

- No, they think they know them.

They need to learn until they've got as much stamina as you

til they're as sharp are you

and as fit at you they won't be as good as you.

- But they're not gonna learn that

because they don't want to learn that.

- Maybe it's time they did.

- Seeing as this is my last week

I thought I'd bring out the gourmet big g*ns.

- What is it?

- At some point in it's life it was fish.

And then the sausages got involved and, well.

You're guess is as good as mine.

- Did you taste it?

- Me?

No, but it's the thought that counts, right?

- Yeah.

(chuckling)

- So themes for the party, any suggestions?

Okay, it'll be Hawaiian.

- What?

- That's so daggy, Amy.

- Daggy but fun.

- Okay folks, little surprise this weekend.

- You're starting advanced clinics?

- No.

You're all entered into a comp.

- But I didn't think there

was supposed to be another competition

til the end of the month.

- That's why it's a surprise.

And you my friend will be covering the event

as a trial run for Stakes Magazine.

- You're kidding.

- Just spoke to Harvey, he's not making any promises

but if you cover the event well

you're still in the running for that job.

- So good.

- Who's the comp up against?

- Actually we'll be setting up our own.

You'll all be surfing against one person.

Anyone who beats them gets points

towards their end review tally.

- Cool.

- Great. - Bring it on.

- Who are we surfing against?

They must be pretty good.

- They are.

- Who then?

- Fly Watson.

- Simmo are you mad?

- Not last time I checked

but it's a matter of opinion I suppose.

- I came to you before to try and get some help.

Not to turn them totally against me.

- Really?

Reading between the lines

I thought you asked how you could get their respect.

Seeing as it doesn't work to tell people to respect you

I thought we'd show them.

- But Simmo it's impossible.

I can't win against six people.

- Not with that attitude you can't.

Fly, maybe that's part of the problem.

The others can only respect you

as much as you respect yourself.

You can win this if you believe you can.

If you don't, you can't.

so we're not expecting any arguments.

Okay this is how it'll run.

You guys'll surf like a tag team

so once you've had your three

head in, next competitor out.

Fly will stay out in the water.

She won't take her next wave

until the next competitor's in the water.

- You can still say no to all this if you want.

- It's too late now.

Anyway I have to do it.

'Cause if I don't you won't have anything to photograph.

- You better make it good then.

but chalk up another victory for Fly.

- She can't keep going.

She's barley able to stand in that last wave.

- Let's see what she's got left

when she thinks she's running on empty.

(water splashing)

- It had to happen sooner or later, people.

- Okay people, how are we feeling about ourselves?

- We're feeling that Fly is one fantastic surfer.

- And that we've still got some serious catching up to do.

- You won't catch up

unless you get those basic skills in place.

The fitness, the paddling

strength, foot position, balance.

- All those things Fly keeps banging on about.

- Exactly.

I also organized today to show you something I couldn't do.

I couldn't do what Fly just did, guarantee.

There are somethings that I can do that she can't.

Your job is to trust

that we've figured out who should be doing what

and when they should be doing it.

Deal?

- [Students] Deal.

- Gotcha.

- Excellent.

- You are something else Fiona Watson.

- See what you can do with a little bit of self respect?

Harvey rang, he wants you to drop the films in

and he wants to see exactly what you took

not what you edit out before he sees 'em.

- Okay, no worries.

- Only if it involves sleeping for a week.

- Please tell me there's an explanation, Eric.

- You can't work it out?

I'm a Hawaiian pizza, ham, pineapple.

- That is so bad.

- I only beat you because I was lucky enough to go last

when you're exhausted.

I barely want points, but not that badly.

We thought we might start training a bit early tomorrow.

- Are you trying to finish me off?

- Yeah, but not until we squeezed every last drop

of wisdom out of ya.

- That was a top party.

- Absolutely.

to cover comps and stuff.

- You have to get some sleep.

You got a bunch of young surfers

who'll be waiting for their fearless leader in the morning.

And I think it's goodbye tonight

'cause I'll be on the bus at five in the morning.

- I'll be there to see you off.

- No you won't.

You'll be here doing what you're supposed to do.

Training some future world champions.

- Thanks for everything I'm too tired to mention right now.
