- [Bec Voiceover] Some people take on

more responsibility than they should,

I know, because I'm one of those people.

Example one, the simple task of putting together

a band for the music elective.

- Don't forget meeting today, second half of lunch.

Battle of the Bands?

- Yeah, I got it.

- What's going on?

You guy's forming a band?

- Trying to.

- Who's idea was that?

- It's compulsory, part of our music pract.

- Okay, so Matt you'll do drums, Edge?

- Bass guitar.

- Okay, what about keyboards?

Anna didn't you say you'd done some piano?

- Yeah, Mary had a little lamb.

- No, that's cool.

Yeah, we can work with that.

[singing) - Taking responsibility

means you're the list writer, the delegator,

the dictator, there's a great risk

in being labeled the bossy one.

- Drums, bass, guitar, we still need a singer.

- I can sing!

I mean if no one else wants to.

Well you guys have heard me before right?

- Yeah, same place we heard Heath.

In the shower. [laughing)

- So Heath and I will sing together.

- All right, well back-up vocals then.

Fly, Anna?

- I'd rather do that then carry Edge's gear around.

- All right well let's decide on the lead vocals

once we know what style we're after.

- I reckon we should do something of our own.

Like something original, because the other bands,

they'll be doing covers.

- Well I know that's what Joe's Band's doing.

- Well we don't have a lot of time though.

- I'll get started this right away.

It can't be that hard to write a song.

- Yeah, well Edge has got a point.

Better to come up with something original.

I'll help.

- Yeah, sure.

- Okay, sounds good.

Why don't you put something together fast

and we'll take a look at it.

- [Bec Voiceover] Sometimes you get lucky though

and everyone comes around in the end.

[upbeat piano music)

- [All] Rock'n'rollin'!

- How much time is this gonna take up?

I hope it doesn't eat into your training time.

- [Bec Voiceover] Example two,

your dad's giving your coach a hard time.

You try to stay out of it, but.

- Unbelievable.

- What?

- Barraban board runs.

They're insisting on hosting the Top of the Wave

comp again this year.

- They hosted it last year.

I thought we agreed that each club would take turns

from north to south.

- We did.

Reason being, like we said, have an unfair advantage.

- Of course, cause they know the breaks on their own beach.

Come on, you lot.

- Hey Bec, there's nothing personal with your dad, alright?

Its just that I lobbied council about this comp last year

and his clubs going back on their word.

- [Bec Voiceover] When your family's involved,

you can't help feeling responsible.

[upbeat rock music)

- Barraban Top of the Wave Board Riders contest.

- They're determined to have their own way.

- He's not getting away with this.

Come off it, Neil.

First you insist your club hosts the event

two years in a row, now you're changing the name,

claiming the whole ownership of the event.

Yeah I understand

but the comp belongs to all the clubs.

Not just Barraban.

If you keep this up, you'll be competing against yourself.

Bec, sorry.

I know this is probably a little bit awkward.

- Ah its cool, I'm just trying to stay out of it.

- Yeah.

Good that's probably for the best.

- [Bec Voiceover] So I stayed out of it

and put all my energy into wrangling everyone for the band.

♪ I was walking down the street ♪

- What do you think?

- Its not bad.

Its good but this first line, I was walking down the street.

I mean, what is that?

- Its a line in the song.

- Yeah but every second song starts

with I was walking down the street.

- Name one.

- Well I can't think of any off the top of my head

but I know its not a good line.

- Right o.

Let's come up with something better.

But we better hurry cause they're already rehearsing

the chorus.

- [Bec Voiceover] Which wasn't going that bad

if you don't mind a few creative differences.

- I like it.

- I don't.

- Why not?

- I don't know.

Its the lyrics.

I don't believe them.

- You don't have to believe them.

Just sing em.

- Okay, let's go from the top

but this time, Fly and Anna, you come in with the oh ohs.

Ready?

- Hang on, hang on, stop.

Fly, Anna's on [high pitched) oh.

- Okay yeah sorry.

- All right, just that bit where the girls come in.

- [Bec Voiceover] Things were going okay

until Joe saw someone had graffitied

the carnival banner and renamed it

the Blue Water Comp.

Of course Joe went straight home and told dad.

- This time you've gone too far.

- Sorry?

- That sign caused a lot of money

and by defacing it someone has broken the law.

- Hang on, what sign?

- Don't play games with me, Simmo.

- Dad, you can't come in here and start accusing people

without actually knowing--

- That sign over there at the beach,

someones graffitied all over it.

- Well it wasn't me.

- No probably it wasn't but its pretty obvious

that someone from the Blue Water club.

- You haven't got any proof of that, mate.

If people are stooping to this sort behavior,

you can take it as a measure of how strongly they fell.

- I don't care how strongly they feel.

If this happens again, I won't be talking to you about it.

I'll be talking to the police.

- [Bec Voiceover] When your dad starts

threatening your coach,

that's when staying out of things is not an option anymore.

- You're reckon Simmo did it?

- I doubt it.

- Yeah but he's pretty cut off about the whole thing.

- So are lots of people.

- I can imagine Simmo sneaking around after dark.

Like a phantom graffiti vandal.

No.

You're right, he wouldn't.

- This is so stupid.

The carnival was meant to be fun.

It was meant to bring people together.

- Yeah but its not.

- But it should.

It could.

We're gonna have to make it work.

In fact, I think I have an idea.

Joe.

How's dad?

- He's still pretty ticked off.

- Why's he being so stubborn about this?

- He reckons Barraban can run things better

than Blue Water.

- Oh this inter club rivalry is pathetic

and its being going on for years.

Isn't it time they stopped it?

Can't you just talk to him?

I mean, tell him to back down.

- Why can't you?

- Cause he won't listen to me.

- If he won't listen to you

why's he gonna listen to me?

- Because you're part of the Barraban club.

Look, I'll cut you a deal.

You talk to dad, convince him to let Blue Water

host the contest and I'll throw the biggest party

you've even seen.

Live band, food, the lot.

- Yeah right.

How you guys gonna pay for that?

- Sponsorships.

Solar Blue will kick in the money.

All we need to do is get everyone together

to chill out

and Dad and Simmo aren't gonna do it.

So its up to us.

- Which band are you gonna get to play?

- Well it depends on who'll do the gig.

- I'll talk to the old man, okay,

but I can't promise anything.

- Thank you.

[upbeat pop rock)

- Get off.

Get off.

- [Bec Voiceover] A little bribery can go a long way

planted in the right hands.

- Simmo.

- Neil.

Come on girls, let's get out there

and give Fly a run for her money.

- Apparently a lot of the kids

are feeling pretty strongly about having the contest

at Blue Water beach this year.

- Apparently.

- This dispute between the clubs isn't doing anyone

any good.

- Couldn't agree more.

- So I've had a chat to the members

and in order to end this dispute,

we've decided to invite Blue Water

to host the contest this year.

- That's good.

That's great.

- Dad!

What's happening?

- Well I uh, I hear you're having a party.

- We are?

- Well according to Joe and that would be

the draw card for you to host it.

- Is that so?

- Uh, yes.

Actually I was just on my way over here

to talk to you about it.

- Good luck.

These things are very had to pull off.

Have fun.

- [Bec Voiceover] Perhaps this was the first moment

I got the feeling I made a bigger promise than I realized.

- Yes of course, no we understand that.

Okay, thank you very much, bye.

We got sponsorship.

- Fantastic.

- Solar Blue are gonna provide tents, presentation venue,

food and drinks, advertising, and trophies.

- What about the band?

- No they wouldn't come with the band idea.

- Why not?

- Well they just weren't prepared

to stretch it that far.

Come on, you got to admit they've been pretty generous.

- Everyone's expecting a band.

- Well everyone will have to forget about the band.

Come on a stack of CDs and Simmo's ghetto blaster

should keep a Saturday afternoon sports crowd

pretty happy.

- [Bec Voiceover] Now we had trouble.

- I thought you said Solar Blue agreed?

- The money ran out at that point.

- Maybe we can get a DJ.

- Joe sold all the Barraban guys on the idea

we were having a band

if we don't have one, it will like we lied

to get the competition back at our beach.

- But what are we supposed to do?

- Maybe we could do the gig ourselves.

- Us?

We haven't even had a single rehearsal yet.

- So?

We've got time.

We'll need to pull it together fast

but I reckon we can do it.

- One song, maybe two, but we won't be able

to fill a whole night.

- Half an hour, that's all we need.

We can mix CDs for the rest of the party.

At least people will get a live band as promised.

- I reckon we can do it.

- Yeah.

- Okay, but the song that Edge has written

and no offense, I don't really like it.

- Why?

Is it cause you're not on lead vocals?

- Guys! - No.

Because it doesn't work.

- Guys, if we agree to do this

we won't have time to do original stuff anyway.

There's no way Edge could write songs in time.

- I agree.

So we can do covers.

- You all up for it?

Okay, give me some ideas and I'll write them down.

[upbeat pop rock)

- Hey, Anna.

Do you think Fly knows when she's singing off key?

- She doesn't seem to.

- Well maybe you should, you know, tell her.

- I'm not telling her.

- Someone has to.

- Well its not going to be me.

- Okay, we have a problem.

Fly can't sing to save herself.

- Oh come on, Perri.

- She's right, she is a little off key.

- Well I've never noticed.

- Well you're not standing next to her.

Heath, she's throwing me off.

- Give her a chance, she'll get it.

You watch.

- [Bec Voiceover] But she didn't get it,

even though they practiced and practiced.

And so did everyone else.

The more we practiced, the more we thought

you wouldn't be able to tell

but it just made the problem stand out even worse.

Until we had no time left.

Suddenly, it was Saturday, the day of the carnival.

- Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Top of the Wave,

Northern Beach's board riders competition.

Proudly sponsored by Solar Blue.

Looks like we got a great day here today

with three to four foot solid glassy waves.

Kinda peeking to the left.

- [Bec Voiceover] Everything seemed to be going well,

not that you could tell dad.

He was watching Simmo like a hawk.

- Pretty good set up you've got here.

- Yeah.

- Surprised being the only club with sponsorship,

you'd have, well more money to spend.

- Well Solar Blue have been very generous.

[laughs)

- I hear we've got some entertainment.

- Yep.

Should be good, eh?

[laughs)

- How did I end up in the heat with you?

- Oh just bad luck, mate.

That's all.

- Yeah bad luck for you.

[soft rock music)

♪ Kinda restless ♪

♪ Take it on ♪

♪ To sell your soul ♪

♪ The city ♪

♪ Is coming ♪

- And that's a nice final wave from Bec Sanderson

bringing her points to eight point five.

[cheering)

- Good one, Bec.

- Nice work.

- Thanks, its really heavy out there today.

- Hey what's the big secret about the band?

Who's playing tonight?

- Its a surprise.

- Well have you booked anyone or no?

- Yeah.

- Why can't you just say who it is?

- Okay, I'll tell you.

Our band is playing.

- What?

The deal was that you were hiring a professional band

to play at this gig.

- Yeah but the sponsorship money didn't quite cover it.

So.

- Well you should of checked it out

before you started making promises you can't keep.

- Joe, our band sounds good.

- How could it?

You've been together five minutes.

- Yeah but we've been practicing heaps.

- You better be good, Bec, cause if its not,

no ones gonna hang around for encores.

- [Bec Voiceover] And that's when I started

to feel the pressure

which is probably why I started putting the pressure

on everyone else.

- Okay, band practice, half an hour, don't forget.

- Yeah you'll be at rehearsals, I'll be in the finals.

- Finals don't start for another couple of hours

so I want to see you in the club ready to play

by :.

- Whatever.

- Go, Matt.

[upbeat rock)

- Have you guys sorted out those microphone problems yet?

- Its not the microphone that's the problem.

- Its Fly.

- Oh come on guys, give her a break.

She's doing the best she can.

- Heath, she's tone deaf.

- She's not that bad.

- Yes she is.

- You said she'd get there and she hasn't.

- Well do you think anyone's gonna notice?

- Yes, I do.

If we go up there tonight with Fly on backup vocals,

we're gonna sound terrible.

- What are you saying?

What that we kick her out of the band?

- No.

But someone needs to tell her that she can't sing.

- [Bec Voiceover] How do you do that?

How do you tell a friend they're ruining the show?

- No one gets past this door, okay?

- [Bec Voiceover] You can't.

We just had to keep practicing.

- Okay.

Let's go from the top.

We've got less than one hour.

[upbeat pop rock)

- Okay, its good but we really need to tighten it up.

- Yeah the drums are too loud, they're drowning us out.

- What do you want me to do, turn them down?

- My mics not working properly.

What's wrong with it?

- [Bec Voiceover] None of us knew that Perri

had decided to deal with Fly's singing problem herself.

- Fly.

Its not on.

Its not on because you can't sing.

- I'll talk to Mr. Blackstone,

see if we can get you some extra percussion.

- Don't bother.

- Yeah nice work guys, well done.

- I didn't think she'd get that upset.

- Yeah well you thought wrong.

And you've lost Fly, you've lost me, too.

- Heath? - Hang on.

- Fly.

Fly, wait up.

Don't let Perri get you down.

You know she just wants to be center stage.

- I didn't even want to be in the band in the first place.

- Fly stop.

- I've got to get ready for my set.

- Don't let this get in the way of a good score.

You know what Simmo says.

If you're cut up about something, use it.

- Heath?

Heath, you can't do this.

- Well I am, Bec.

- But we can't do this gig without you.

- Perri seems keen, why don't you give her the job?

- That's impossible and you know it.

And we've only got six hours till we go on.

- Yeah well its not my problem, Bec.

This whole thing was about bringing everybody together.

It was mean to be fun.

But if people can't get past their egos,

then I don't want anything to do with this.

- [Bec Voiceover] Just brilliant.

We'd lost Fly and now we lost Heath

and without Heath, the band was hopeless.

[upbeat electronic music)

Fly took out all her hurt and frustration

on the waves and gave such a good show

it scored Simmo a few more points against dad.

- And that's an eight point five for Fiona Watson,

putting her into the lead of the girls over .

- [Bec Voiceover] Although, Dad just couldn't help himself.

He was still winding Simmo up wherever he could.

- Not a bad effort.

- Yeah well Fly's a tough little competitor.

- Yeah its gonna be interesting to see

how she goes against Lisa Bradbury in the final.

Lisa's pretty hard to beat.

I've uh, I'm having a look at your time table.

When Barraban hosts the contest, we normally

have the award ceremony after the barbecue.

- Yeah?

- Well its just that there's a lot to organize

before the ceremony, that's all I'm saying.

Still I reckon you're onto it

- I should be fine.

- [Bec Voiceover] But I still had to find a band

and I wasn't going to give up.

- Joe.

- [Bec Voiceover] I had one last idea.

It meant swallowing my pride

but at this stage, I had nothing to lose.

- I have a favor to ask.

- Then tell me.

The bands fallen apart.

- Who told you?

- Emma.

Bec, you've really stuffed up this time.

- Oh and you just can't wait to rub it in, can you?

- Well what do you want me to do?

- Take our place.

I thought that your band could play instead of ours.

♪ Its like a radar ♪

- What's this about you quitting the band?

- Well I'm not hanging around

after the way they treated you.

- They can't do tonight's gig without you.

- Oh they should of thought of that

before they turfed you out.

- They didn't terf me out, Heath.

Look I know I was upset but you know what?

They're right.

I can't sing to save myself.

I know it, you know it, everyone knows it.

I sound like a dying cow.

- Well I still think it was a low act.

It was the way they said it.

- Well let's face it.

There's no nice way of telling someone

that their singing voice sucks.

You can't let them down, Heath.

Come on.

- No, I've lost my enthusiasm.

- But if you don't, the party will be a flop

and Blue Water surf club will look like

they can't even run the event.

We can't give Barraban a reason to take the contest away.

Can we?

[upbeat pop rock)

- Simmo, I've just got a call from the trophy shop

and there's been a big stuff up

and they can't get the trophies here until after eight.

Which means we have to push the whole presentation back.

- After eight?

That's, that's unacceptable.

Let me call them.

[soft upbeat pop rock)

- Anything wrong?

- No.

No, everything's fine.

- Bec?

Fly reckons I'm being a bit over top with all this.

So um.

You want me to do tonight, I will.

- [Bec Voiceover] Oh man, what was I going to tell Joe?

- No Bec, no way.

You gave us the gig.

I've organized the boys, the equipment.

- Yeah I know, I'm not actually taking the gig away.

- Well I'm doing you a favor here.

- Yeah I know will you just shut up and listen?

Okay.

Your band has two things ours doesn't.

An extra guitar and the equipment to play electronica.

But our band has got a bass guitar and drums,

which to be honest, Joe, would make you guys

sound a lot better.

I mean the whole point of throwing this party

was to put a stop to this stupid infighting between clubs.

So why not put our two bands together and show

the old boys how its actually done?

Okay, can we please run through this once

for Joe and Jabu?

We don't have much time.

All right, stop.

So you came in too late.

- No you guys at it, your bits too early.

- What?

- You come in at the fourth, not the second.

- No I don't--

- Matt, can we just give it a go?

- Come on guys, I'm ready.

- [Bec Voiceover] The odds were terrible,

two bands playing together a song only one of them knew,,

a hole filled with everyone I'd ever met in my life.

Most of them Barraban surfers

who wanted to see us fail.

It didn't get any worse.

- A couple of people have already been complaining.

- Why?

- They must of found out who was playing.

You sure you want to do this?

- Well half the bands on stage, so we got to.

- We could get crucified out there.

- Joe, its half an hour, its not going to k*ll you.

Hi everyone, we're your entertainment for tonight.

- Uh yeah right.

Where's the real band?

- [Bec Voiceover] This was going to be the longest

half hour of my life.

- So uh, we hope you enjoy it.

[electronic beeping)

- [Bec Voiceover] Sometimes you try to take responsibility

for everything and despite your best efforts

you push things a little too far

and people end up getting hurt.

Sometimes though, you get lucky

and things pan out anyway.

I don't know how it happened this time.

But I wasn't complaining

and from what I could see, no one else was either.
