- [Perri] Time of incident: :.

Weather conditions: Mental.

Seven footer swell, filthy rips,

two major ones sucking straight out to sea.

Beach status: we decided to close the beach

at : p.m. because of the pollution,

and 'cause the surf was so dangerous.

- Look there's still a leftover in the corner.

- Ah she's a cruel mistress isn't she?

She turns it on just when you can't go out.

- You don't need to rub it in.

- I still don't understand why we can't surf?

It's stopped raining now.

- It's not the rain that's the problem, it's the sewerage.

- When the rains too much the system can't handle it,

and all the overflow goes straight into the drink.

- You do realize we're probably surfing in it

half the time anyway.

- No dice sunshine.

None of you are going in.

But because I knew you'd be so crushed,

I've organized a special dry land treat.

Check it out.

Brand new sticks donated by a local board maker.

Your job is to paint 'em up, put a design on them,

they'll be auctioned at the surf club

barbecue on the weekend.

But, that's not all.

You get to keep half of whatever people pay for them.

Hello people?

We're talking fold money here.

which I went to so much trouble to organize,

[upbeat rock music)

- Are you serious?

- They are going to be in so much trouble.

- Yeah I did a water quality test this morning,

they're definitely going to be paying

for their time in the tubes.

So, you wanna lift somewhere?

- No I'm just gonna go for a jog along the beach.

- Help!

Help Morgan!

Morgan's in trouble you have to help him!

[intense rock music)

- I don't have my board or any equipment.

You have to go and get Casey,

he'll be in the carpark getting into a white ute.

- You need to come my friend's drowning.

- [Perri] Casey!

[heartbeat pumping) [gasping)

- Eat up.

You're gonna need all the energy you can get

to deal with the media hordes.

- Heath, I'm not gonna do some dodgy interview with you

where you make me out to be some kind of--

- Like the hero?

I'm way back in the queue.

The local paper's been on the phone twice this morning.

- They want to do a story about you.

- They were even talking about you

getting nominated for a bravery award.

- Yes come on, egg up.

- I think I'll start with fruit.

- [Jill] There you go.

- Yeah you do look a bit frog snot this morning.

- Heath!

- I'm just saying, I know I've been

on the toilet more times than is comfortable.

I'm wondering if it's from the surf.

- Yeah.

I got a new piercing last week

and it's starting to look infected.

- Where's the piercing?

[door squeaking)

- Hey I think the auction boards have been stolen.

- I swear I locked it last night.

This is crazy.

- 'Scuse me.

- Um, Simmo the auction boards seem to have disappeared.

- Yeah I know.

I heard through the grapevine you were all crook,

so I figured you'd be banged up in bed

with some mystery virus and I sent them back.

I can't imagine how you all caught something so dodgy?

- None of us are sick Simmo.

[sneezes)

- No?

There I was thinking you'd gone surfing behind my back.

My mistake.

- But-- - But what?

- Well, I'd kinda already starting planning

what I could spend the money on.

- Now that's funny.

Yesterday I could have sworn you'd never heard of money,

wrong again.

- [Bec] Simmo.

- Bye now kiddies.

- Do you think he knows? - He so knows.

- Perri?

- I um, I told Casey I'd go down

and fill out an incident report.

[foreboding music) [heartbeat pumping)

- Probably best not to disturb me, need my rest.

- How are you?

Why are you in a chair?

- Somehow managed to fracture my ankle yesterday,

otherwise everything seems to be working all right.

- Your neck.

Did I do that?

- [chuckles) Yeah that's just the half of it.

- Yeah well I didn't escape completely either.

- Yeah?

I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

- You first.

[intense ominous music)

- I'm sorry.

You all right otherwise?

Did you dream about it too?

- How did you get Simmo to change his mind?

- I grabbed him, threw him to the ground,

and confessed to everything.

He gave me a brief lecture on the importance of honesty

and said if we wanted to get the boards back,

we'd have to organize it ourselves,

which, I have done.

- How brilliant.

- So if you all make an orderly queue

and you're each prepared to give me

a small commission of what your board makes,

you can join the fun.

[groans) - You right?

- I wish I'd listened to Simmo now,

I'm really uncomfortable.

I think I'll have to take it out.

- Do you um, do you know where Anna's new piercing is?

- No, I do not know where Anna's new piercing is.

- Shouldn't Perri be back by now?

I mean how long does it take to fill out an incident report?

- Do I have a sign saying mother hen on my head?

No, okay.

- Hey, aren't you meant to be on duty?

- Oh no is today Friday?

I'm late, I'm sorry it won't happen again.

- See that it doesn't.

How's Perri?

- What, you haven't asked her yourself?

- She hasn't been in today.

- Look I'm sorry I know I just got here,

but I can I take my break now?

[scoffs)

- He was trying to teach himself to surf,

reckoned I'd go out with him if he was a surfer.

But he wouldn't take lessons,

thought he could figure it out on his own.

- Yeah I know the type.

- But it was way too big for a beginner.

I tried to stop him from going in,

thought he'd agreed to go home

and wait till it calmed down,

but when I looked back he was going in with his board.

I yelled for him to come back in, that it was too dangerous,

it was like that made it a challenge.

- Yeah boys can be pretty stupid, especially around girls.

- This was stupid though.

The minute he got in he was pounded,

his leg rope snapped, and he lost his board.

I knew he was in serious trouble, 'cause he can barely swim.

- He can't swim?

- Not much.

I feel like I should give him a visit,

but I'm so angry with him.

- I can go with you?

- It's bizarre.

I've only known you for hours,

and you get me more than any other girl

that I've known at this school for years.

- I think Morgan's probably had enough visitors for one day.

- Why did you do that?

- Just saying thanks for saving my life.

- What are you doing out here?

- Just felt like being on my own.

- [Matt] Is that what it looked like?

- A bit.

- Had lifeguard duty today.

Casey told me to remind you to fill in that report.

Guess you got caught up somewhere else.

- Guess so.

- I went to the hospital with Laurel, saw you and Morgan.

You two seemed to be getting along pretty well.

- Yeah, we are.

- If you ask me he only kissed you

because he saw us coming down the path.

- He was just saying thank you.

- What, just when we arrived?

Looked like he was trying to show off.

You know he nearly drowned you yesterday

for exactly the same reason.

- You were all out there too,

it could have been any of you I had to save.

- No, none of us would have gone out

if we could barely swim a lap of the pool,

but I guess none of us had girls we were trying to impress.

[moody music)

- Oops sorry.

Wow Bec, I know I'm not supposed to see it,

but it's brilliant. - You think so?

- Yeah, the likeness is amazing.

- Course it is, and it's really flattering.

- It's not meant to be him, honestly it's not.

- You can stick some glasses and mustache

on him in the morning.

- Heath? - Yeah?

- I had the picked up this morning.

They're being sealed as we speak.

- Maybe no one else will pick the likeness.

- Hey Perri, let us know when you're ready

for that hero interview yeah?

I think that look meant later.

- Looked more like a never to me.

[Tires rolling) [heart pounding)

[intense music)

- I just don't get it.

Suddenly I'm paranoid the bus is gonna crash,

or the lift is gonna get stuck,

stuff that I've never even thought about before,

and the dreams.

- You've got the fears.

- No kidding.

- And you're letting them win.

Come on, I've got the perfect distraction.

- [Perri] This is mad!

- You call yourself an athlete?

[laughter)

Your coordination skills suck.

Come on Perri faster. - I can't.

- [Morgan] Come on.

- [Perri] I can't do this Morgan.

- This'll crank the speed. - Huh?

- What do you reckon?

- You can't be serious.

- Oh come on. - No way.

- This'll be wild.

[intense rock music)

- Morgan!

Morgan!

[car horn honks)

[laughing)

Are you insane?

What were you doing?

Answer me!

- I'm fine.

- You're not fine.

You're an imbecile.

You nearly died yesterday and you still

haven't learned your lesson.

- Man give us a break.

- Why should I?

I nearly drowned trying to save your life

and you don't care.

Just as long as you get a rush.

- That's a bit full on Perri.

- You have no idea.

- Come on give us a hand up.

- You can stay there all night for all I care.

- Perri!

Oi you can't leave me here!

- You don't have a temperature.

- I'm telling you, I'm too sick to go.

- Why don't we swap?

- I'll say I did Edge's board.

Everything will think I'm weird

but they won't think I've got a crush or anything.

- I don't have a crush.

- A thing then.

- I don't have a thing for him either.

- Sometimes you're too sweet for your own good Fly,

but somehow I don't think anyone will buy

the surfing dog as my design. - No?

- You wrote your dog's name on the collar Fly.

- Hmm, I did too.

- So does anybody wanna give me $ for this bread roll?

Well passed in a $.

- Come on g*ng let's get it together,

we've gotta help set up the barbecue.

- [Matt] We don't have Perri.

- It's okay.

She knows where it is, she'll find us.

- I've quit the Life Savers. - What?

- I've told them to take me off any more patrols.

- I can't believe you.

- Why not?

- You're letting a noodle like Morgan dictate your life.

- I haven't quit because of him.

I quit because of me.

It wasn't some act of bravery Matt.

I was scared to death, I didn't know what I was doing.

The sooner everyone knows the better.

The next person that calls me a hero is gonna get decked.

- Hero.

- Do you wanna get decked?

- You're not getting it Perri,

the brave thing about bravery is that

you're scared to death but you do it anyway.

- It doesn't change anything.

I quit because I know I wouldn't do it again,

and if I know that then I shouldn't be a Life Saver.

- No one would expect you to do it that way again anyway.

You didn't have a board, or a ring,

or anything else to keep you safe.

Morgan is twice your size and you didn't know

how to get him off you.

Everyone will understand if you quit,

but I reckon there's some stuff I can show you

that might change your mind.

- How?

- Well I'd have to demonstrate.

You know, I'm sure I'd be willing to share my secrets

as soon as your inner hero's ready

to come back out and play.

It's not quite like that but you're on the right track.

Come on, Simmo said you don't get a profit from the auction

unless you show face. - He did?

- No I did actually.

- All right ladies and gentlemen,

time to get the auction started.

We're gonna do this in two parts.

First we'll unveil the board,

then we'll give you a quick introduction to the artist.

- Only one brain I know that could come up

- I guess it's about the ocean

being the glue that binds my two worlds together.

- [Simmo] Mmm the glue, brilliant and deep.

- So yeah I'm gonna donate my money

to Surfers Against Sewerage.

[cheering and applause)

- Such a suck.

- All right, next board.

Holy cow.

Perri is this yours?

Okay, I'd like to say a few words

before we get the next artist up.

This is obviously a more serious

design than some of the others, and serious for a reason,

because the artist in the last few days

has experienced the perils of the sea on a bad day.

So how about a big welcome for our latest hero?

[applause)

Come on Perri.

All right, I wanna big price for this one,

and then I promise the barbecue will be ready.

So who'll get me started?

- Come on Bec, don't wanna miss your moment of glory.

- [Simmo] Sure that we can squeeze out a few more dollars

- Crunchie, and it's a she.

- I beg your pardon, Crunchie the surfing she-dog.

Okay there's only two boards left folks,

[laughter)

- [Simmo] I'm not sure whose this one is.

- I didn't know this was a self portrait competition?

Edge, you shameless man.

- Woo! [applause and whistling)

- Just letting everyone know what

the winner of the comp looks like.

[laughter)

- Okay so what are my bids for this glorious self portrait?

Sold to the man in the tasteful

Hawaiian shirt, congratulations.

[applause)

Okay folks, the bar is open,

get yourselves a cool drink.

- It wasn't meant to turn out like that,

and you can keep the difference because yours sold

for more than mine did anyway.

Unless you're gonna make me pay in some other way?

[laughs)

So why'd you do it then?

You'd rather everyone think that you're up yourself

instead that I, I don't know,

that I have a thing for you, which I don't.

- That's not why I did it.

- There's another technique you can try.

As soon as the person lets go of you,

- A drowning person is so desperate

to keep their head above water,

there's no way they're gonna follow you down.

- Well it makes sense, but I'm kinda getting

the hang of this combat style stuff.

I wanna make sure I've really nailed it.
