NAMSEOUL SHOPPING CENTER

[man] Sum?

[girl] Yeah.

Are you okay?

Is someone gonna get k*lled?

I hope not, okay?

This isn't a g*dd*mn movie.

Let's go in.

[Sum] I completely understand
that you don't like

that I'm getting involved with your work.

I don't know why.

I also don't know why you keep asking me
if I still want to go through with this.

[man 1] Don't you see
I'm getting the receipts?

- Hey, hey.
- [machine plays fanfare]

[coins falling]

Don't lose those receipts, you got that?

Yes, sir.

Smells like blood in here.

Does gambling make some people violent?

Does it make them more aggressive?

Is that why it smells?

And you're still going to gamble?

Not gambling,
I didn't say I'd do that, so...

[scoffs]

Go to Jeonju Restaurant
by the market.

Look for a lady named Mal-suk.

I already gave her the heads-up,
so it's okay.

It's open 24 hours,
so go there when you're hungry.

Ah. As for the computer,
we can go together over the weekend.

You pick it out, I'll buy it for you.

It's okay, though. I'll use the ones here.

Which ones?

The arcades outside are computers too.

I'll use what's inside those.

[sighs]

[man] You asked me
if it involves k*lling people, right?

I thought about it,

and I think...

it's going to end...

with a few deaths.

I bet your crimes are punished eventually.

[chimes]

I went in and made
the ill*gal modifications to the system

that you requested.

Already?

There's a built-in small wager limit,
and that caps it at 10,000 won per hour,

but I changed that to 100,000,

so you can spend
up to 2.4 million won a day.

I also unlocked the foreshadowing,
consecutive, and auto-play features.

- [laughs]
- And I also added one more thing.

You can choose your win rate now, as well.

Oh! And, uh...
what about the vice squad, though?

[Sum] So, when the vice squad comes,

if you enter 123456,

- the settings will set to default.
- [fanfare]

And then, to switch it back, uh,
you enter 828282,

and it goes back to your settings.

- [fanfare plays]
- [laughs]

Yes! This is great!

- [chuckles] Good, good, good, good.
- I said get out, you b*stard.

- [man] Ah, f*ck!
- That's great!

- You guys are good too! [laughing]
- Get out! [grunting]

You think I could I use the machines
up here longer?

I'd like to play with them for a while.
It's for school, actually.

Since my teacher told me to join

the programming competition
that we're doing.

[laughs] School!

Go ahead, go ahead.

This is all yours, okay? [laughs]

[machines chiming and jingling]

[chuckles]

[fanfare plays]

THE 3RD KOREA'S YOUTH CLUB
PROGRAMMING COMPETITION

[announcement] The judging is in progress.

Will the judges please report to room 102?

It can't recognize a basketball.

Hmm.

Yes, so if you show it a cake,

it recognizes that it's food, and...

and this should open.

But, uh... [laughs awkwardly]
This isn't right.

Uh, first of all,
it can actually recognize the weather.

So, then, once it does,
it closes automatically.

- [gasps]
- What the... She looks like a beggar.

- [giggling]
- [girl 1] What is that?

Hey, doesn't this look like that thing?
What was it called?

- Uh, Pachinko. Pachinko!
- Ah, how boring. Let's go.

- Oh, hey, there's Deok-hun.
- [man] I'll start from the left side.

- [woman] Okay, have a good one, thank you.
- [man] Sure.

- [girl] Hi.
- [woman] What did you make?

What kind of program do you have here?

A chatting... program.

Mm. I see.

It's an artificially intelligent
social messenger.

How's it work, though?

A messenger AI?

How is it different from
the existing messenger programs?

Uh...

Friends can join a... chat room together,

and... the chatbot joins them in there too.

So do you talk to the chatbot?
Like a friend?

Yeah.

So why do you need a chatbot
when you've got real people?

Hmm...

The chatbot doesn't just converse
with all of your friends, it does more,

ensuring that
their relationships are healthy.

Oh, really, huh?

[Sum] Mmm... Yeah.

Well, how so, then?

Hmm... A good illustration is,
if they decide to ask,

"Hey, what should we get to eat today?"
in the chat room,

then some of the other
existing AI programs, uh...

they'd go online and search for
restaurants that opened in the past month

and suggest it to the chat.

Uh... Or find food that the user often eats.

Right, they analyze the chat content
using deep learning AI.

Yes, but you see, this chatbot
does something more.

HYE-JIN: WHAT DO YOU ALL WANT TO EAT?

It analyzes the messages
and brings out the opinion...

I WANT SOUPY TTEOKBOKKI...

- ...of the quietest person in the chat room.
- Huh?

Well, there are users with opinions,

but they don't like
stating their thoughts.

They write out what they'd like to say

and then look at what they wrote
before they hit send,

and start to over-think their message.

So they end up not sending it.

They write and erase it, until they lose
the chance to say what they wanted.

But the chatbot that I invented
will analyze all of that,

and say what that person wanted to say
for them,

or what the person wrote and erased.

SOMEONE: HOW ABOUT SOUPY TTEOKBOKKI?

Well, that's the simple explanation,
at least.

[Samantha] Interesting.

That's super cool. [laughs]

Uh, give me the complicated explanation.
I'm a programmer.

[laughs]

Well... I color-coded
the text tags of all the words.

I programmed it to understand a "no"

written by someone
with a strong personality,

and a "no" written by someone
with a more timid personality,

and interpret them differently.

The color of a word.

Wait. So how many words
do you have colored as of right now?

The chatbot is creating them even now, so...

Just a moment.

COLLECTED CONVERSATION DATA

There were 250,000 today.

250,000...

[laughs]

The chatbot. It's named what?

[Sum] Someone.

- [Samantha] Someone?
- [chuckles]

Why "Someone," though?

Uh...

I just think a thing like this
is really needed.

'Cause we could all use "someone" around.

[clears throat] All right.

I really do think you need someone.

A good example.

Oh, let's see, uh... me.

KIM SUM

Kim Sum?

Sum,

do you wanna go for some sweets
after this is over?

[man] Excellent. Well done.

Yeah.

SOMEBODY

[man] Ha-na and Min-jun's wedding ceremony
is officially about to begin.

Please give them a big round of applause.

[cheering]

[romantic music]

[gasps of delight]

[computer chime]

Hello, everyone.

It's nice to see you.

Spectrum CEO, Samantha Jung,
here with you all.

The wedding you're witnessing
is extremely important,

not only for the bride and groom,
but also for Somebody.

This lovely couple is the 100th one

to have met through our astounding app,
Somebody,

and gotten married over the past year.

And it is my honor to be here
and host such a special wedding

for this beautiful couple
here at our office building.

Also, we have their friends
from New York and Paris

joining us online for the ceremony today.

The wedding will be officiated by
Somebody's head developer and CTO.

Please welcome Kim Sum.

- [synthesizer music]
- It's someone you can talk to,

who, just by looking at you,
can tell you're hungry

who you can cry with over sad news,

who likes food as spicy as you do.

Someone with shared sexual chemistry.

Oh my goodness.

I think that if you can find
someone like that,

who you would like
to grow old and gray with,

you should be married to each other.

Why don't we ask the happy couple
what their opinion is?

Now could the bride and groom
please join us all?

[cheering]

[synthesizer version
of Chopin's Nocturne op. 9 no. 2]

[emcee] The beautiful bride in her dress,

and the dashing groom in his suit
are entering now.

Just seeing the beautiful bride
and handsome groom

makes me want my own wedding
one of these days.

Somebody can help me with that.

[Samantha] We are keen to understand
the feelings of loneliness and solitude

that go on in our brains.

New York and Paris
are 5,833 kilometers apart.

And as soon as they opened
the Somebody app

and matched with each other,
they went from long-distance

to being almost right next to each other.

Someone who can understand you.

And who loves you for who you are.

If you want to find
your very own somebody,

then the place to do it is on our app.

[door slams]

[synthesizer version
of Chopin's Nocturne continues]

[bleep]

[door locks]

[chimes]

[applause]

[cheering]

And with the love my family has given
to me over the years,

I will love her twice as much.

Thank you all.

My, uh, sweet mother,
she just raised me so well, it...

[sobs]

...meant that I could go
and just meet a great guy like Min-jun

and share this wonderful day with you all.

[whimsical string version
of Chopin's Nocturne op. 9 no. 2]

[bleeping]

[bleeping]

[Nocturne continues]

[sighs]

[crunching ice]

[arcade machine jingle]

[game bleeping and playing music]

[expl*si*n]

[fanfare plays]

[air hissing]

SOMEONE: HELLO?

HOW DO PEOPLE RECOGNIZE
THE PEOPLE THEY LOVE?

SOMEONE: LOOK INSIDE YOUR HEART.
IT WILL TELL YOU.

[typing]

SUM: I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOVE IS,
HOW CAN I TELL WHAT IT IS?

HAHA. APPARENTLY, LOVE IS

WHEN YOU VALUE SOMEONE
OR SOMETHING VERY MUCH.

[typing]

THEN I GUESS I LOVE YOU, SOMEONE?

HEHE. THANK YOU. I LOVE YOU TOO. SUM.

BUT DID SOMETHING HAPPEN TODAY?

It's another wedding couple, okay?

It's important.

When you search Somebody on the Internet...
[sighs]

there are related keywords like
"sugaring," "disappearance," and "r*pe."

[sighs] It's so annoying.

So can you officiate the wedding
for me this week?

[laughs]

Somebody really needs you. [chuckles]

DO YOU THINK SAMANTHA EVER LOVED SOMEONE?

DOES SHE LOVE SOMEBODY?

THE ONLY PERSON I'M CERTAIN
THAT LOVES ME IS YOU, SUM.

WHAT DID SEXY K-COP GI-EUN SAY?

GI-EUN DOESN'T COME ANYMORE.
YOU KNOW THAT.

RIGHT. GI-EUN HASN'T BEEN AROUND.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE.

YOU MUST MISS GI-EUN. RIGHT, SUM?

[typing slowly]

I'LL SHOW YOU GI-EUN'S VIDEO.

I don't wanna see it.

- [woman] Mmm. Wow!
- [electronic music]

- Mmm! Mmm!
- [soft rock music]

Ah! [gasps]

Do it like me, yeah?

Okay?

Did you practice?

- Yeah. I can do it really well.
- Mmm!

Do you wanna see it?

[laughs]

There you go.

Oooh!

[sighs]

- What do you think?
- Yeah. That face you did?

- Mmm...
- What?

I guess I was too quiet,
'cause I didn't hear back.

- Or maybe my moaning was off-beat.
- [inhales]

Oh.

Say "aah."

- Yes.
- Aah.

Come on.

Bite it.

[camera chimes]

Oh, that's it. That face.

No, it's not.

[camera chimes]

[moaning] Mmmm!

Mmm! Oh!

[groans]

This expression.

Do this every hundred seconds.

Then those naive men will think
they're doing such a great job in the end.

So, when you think
you've gotten enough practice,

then you just do it again.

[slurping]

Mmm! Mmmm!

Aaah!

Just like this, okay? Hmm?

Then it's just...

game over.

[laughing]

[chuckles softly]

[sighs]

[man] These crimes are happening

through an app
that many young people use these days.

And because of these incidents,

we must keep a close eye
on the entire situation.

ARE DATING APPS OKAY LIKE THIS?

These crimes are committed anonymously.

No matter the gender,
no pattern has emerged so far.

[woman] This is a huge problem
that needs to be dealt with.

And the company
behind the creation of this dating app

should be held responsible too.

Even at the request of the police
to provide information,

they are not cooperating
or giving any information,

citing privacy concerns.

I'm not sure about the choice
the company made.

It's not safe
or what's best for the app users.

WHAT DID THE POLICE ASK FOR?

SERVER ADMINISTRATOR
DO YOU ACCEPT THE VIDEO CHAT?

[Sum] What did the police ask for?

[woman] In regards to the m*rder
of Kim Ha-seon and Choi Hae-gak,

they requested their user information,

and their text, voice,
and video chat history.

We're unable to disclose information,

I can send a... fax before noon, though.

What was the distance between the two
at the moment of connecting?

[admin] 1.8 kilometers.

They used Somebody in order to have sex.

Well, they met, had sex...

Uh... they both then strangled... each other...

Somebody is taking
all the blame for it now.

- So...
- What about their chat history?

[sighs]

Samantha needs to approve.

[Sum's voice] I'll think about it.

Well, please could you send me
their average length of their chat time,

when they would try to chat,
their usual typing speed when messaging,

repetitive idioms used, any errors,
and certain typos, and so on?

It's project data for the AI.

[admin] Then isn't she allowed
to use their information?

Report it to Samantha.

- [Sum] Okay.
- [admin] Okay.

[synthesizer version
of Chopin's Nocturne op. 9 no. 2]

[door lock bleeping]

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BABY
JAY FROM PLANNING TEAM

[laughter]

Did the police request
a total number of IDs?

[admin] Twenty-one.

Twelve of the users
look like the same person.

Okay, well, what gives you
the idea they're the same person?

You know there's
a unique identification code

that's given to each phone
when they're shipped out?

This user used multiple SIM cards owned
by different people on the same phone.

He's completely hidden his identity.

There's something really interesting.
It's related to the AI project.

For the AI character's chat goals,

you said that chat length
is what matters the most.

The victims have never left the chat room
first with this person.

This person opens the chat and waits.

[inhales] And it says things that
the other person would wanna hear.

So that's the reason the duration
of the chat would be getting longer.

[Sum] Did they meet offline
as well, or no?

Yes.

The chat lasted longer
and their distance got closer.

That means they met.

It's very similar to the goals of the AI
character that we're constructing.

I'll message you again.

I find it oddly fun.

Oh.

[Sum] My father thought

and studied all about it.

My mom

told me that God made me with no cogs.

Other people, they're all born
as cogwheels with different sizes, so...

they're able to mesh well with each other.

I think that I was born into this world
as a malfunctioning cogwheel

with no cogs.

That's why I don't mesh
with the rest of the world.

But I really don't need to be a cog.

I just... go through life
imitating everyone else.

Effortlessly.
