Teams of two run around Spirit Park

and complete land,
air, and water challenges.

This year, the winners get the honor
of naming a branch of Spirit Park's river.

Which they should
totally name Crazy Coyote Creek.

That's okay. I race at a turtle pace.

Just like the Cherokee racing story,
all contestants have to circle the park,

completing the land,
air, and water challenges

before tagging in their teammate.

First one to the waterfall wins.

-Yay, racers!
-[Eagle] Feathers for the win!

-[Otter] Oh yeah!
-[howls]

-Yay, racers.
-[klaxon honks]

Ooh, now I need one of those.

On your mark, get set…

[erupts] Go!

[exciting percussion music playing]

-Run, Buffalo!
-Fly, Hummingbird, fly!

[Eddy] Go, Crane, go!

And they're off like sh**ting stars.

Hummingbird takes the lead,
with Buffalo right behind him. And, uh--

-[mellow music plays]
-Crane's racing too.

So, you're gonna name the river
Crazy Coyote Creek, right?

[chuckles] If I win,
I'm gonna call it the Soaring Stream.

Nope. It'll be Bear Bath River.

-It's a close race!
-[dramatic music plays]

Hummingbird was in the lead

'til he took a wee nap
while smelling the roses.

Oh, feather fuzz.

Buffalo raced ahead,

but she lost her lead
when she got stuck in a tree.

[sighs] Yep, sounds like Buffalo.

Crane flies steadily along.

-Not too fast, not too slow.
-All right. Go, Crane!

Eddy, if you're stuck for a name,
"Crazy Coyote Creek." Just saying.

Um, that's a possibility. Or not.

[exciting percussion music plays]

-[giggles]
-You're up. You're up. Go, go, go!

-[all exclaiming]
-[Owl] Whoo-hoo-hoot!

Summer speed! [screeches]

Go, Kodi, go!

[Kodi roars]

-[groans]
-I hope Crane gets here soon.

I can't wait
to swim in the Soaring Stream.

I'm in the big Spirit Park relay race.

Well, I guess I am in the lead.

Just like the great Billy Mills,

we kept going
even when our goal seemed impossible.

I'm gonna find a salmon first.

Hey!

The California Department
of Fish and Wildlife or Chumash tribe

won't mind if my cedar hat is wet.

-I hope they don't.
-[giggles]

I'm so nervous for my presentation.

-[chuckles]
-You're gonna do great.

It's not every day government
and tribal officials visit our park.

They were sent
by the Secretary of the Interior.

What's a secretary of the interior?
Is that a type of park ranger?

[chuckles] In a way.

Secretary Deb Haaland's in charge
of all of our national parks.

She's also a member
of the Laguna Pueblo tribe,

and is the first Native American
to ever have that job.

[in sing-song] She's our hero!

-Wow! She's like a super Ranger.
-[grunts, strains]

I think I caught a salmon.

-[chuckles]
-[Eddy] That's a catfish.

You can tell by their cute whiskers.

[giggles] What about this?

Nope. That's a rainbow trout.

How come we haven't caught any salmon yet?

I'll show you with the help
of my dad-alicious holographic projector.

Xus Lake used to be full of salmon.

Our Chumash ancestors
always revered the okowoč.

Okowoč means "salmon" in Samala.

But with all the droughts
and dams changing their habitat,

the salmon couldn't survive here.

Tribes like the Hupa, Yurok, and Karuk

have been trying for years
to restore the salmon.

Growing up, I heard stories
from our Cowlitz elders

that there were
so many sa'mn in Washington,

you could walk across the rivers
on their backs.

-Whoa!
-Cool.

[Dad] "Sa'mn" is the Cowlitz word
for "salmon."

But how can we bring
the salmon back to the lake?

I wanna plant more trees so the salmon
will have plenty of food and shade.

Once Dad finds a salmon in Xus Lake,

we can prove to the government
and Chumash leaders

that salmon can still live here safely.

Junior Rangers are on salmon patrol.

[both giggling]

Hold on, I'll catch an okowoč.

-[spits]
-[gasps]

No, you'll catch a prank. [giggles]

-[sputtering] Coyote!
-Did you kids catch a salmon?

Yeah, if by salmon,
you mean a face full of pufferfish water.

My Ranger reports say they're nearby.
Maybe they don't like worms.
