03x07 - The Catio/Campout

What do you guys wanna do today?

We could make a backyard movie.

What sort of movie, Leo?

Hmm.

A fantasy epic.

Well, that might take longer
than one afternoon.

Any ideas, Molly?

Hmm. We could make slime.

Or glitter slime. Or foam slime.

Something less slimy?

[meows]

- Oh. Hi, kitty.
- That's Jasper.

Hi, Jasper.
You look like you're wearing a tuxedo.

Is that your cat?

Jasper is kind of the neighborhood cat.
Everyone takes care of him.

[purring]

Where does he live?

Everywhere, I guess. [gasps]

Molly, you just gave me an idea.

It's something I've been wanting
to make for a while.

A pizza? [sighs] I really like pizza.

No. A catio.

What's a catio?

It's a patio for a cat. A catio.
Jasper would love it.

I've never seen a catio before.

Yeah, how do you even make a catio?

I've got some ideas,
but we can figure it out as we go.

Sounds fun.

[meows]

[breathing deeply]

[Stillwater]
It looks like you have your hands full.

Hi, Stillwater. Thanks for the supplies.

Of course. What are you making today?

A catio. It's a patio for a cat.

My, that sounds interesting.

[chuckles]

That should hold nicely.

[Jasper meows]

You won't even need that old box
after we're done, Jasper.

you're gonna like way better.

- Come on, Jasper.

- Hmm.
- He doesn't wanna come out.

- [meows]
- Jasper, your catio is ready. Come on.

He just needs to know it's his catio.

See? He's trying it.

[Leo] I think he likes it.

Maybe he doesn't like it.

Why didn't he wanna stay in it?

I think he needs a blanket
to make it cozier.

And a pillow.

How's that?

Yeah, it's good.

But I think he would like it
to look more like a real house,

so he knows it's his home.

Like, it could use a roof.

And a door.

And a doorbell.

We're gonna need more supplies.

Oh, still working on the catio, I see.

Yeah. It needed some more stuff.

And a doorbell.

[chuckles] Interesting.

Jasper, welcome to your new catio.

See, Jasper? Now you have
your own door to get into your catio.

And if you get visitors,
they can ring the bell.

Jasper, don't you wanna go in?

- Aw.
- [sighs]

Jasper's right. It's still not done.

It needs a ramp.

And decorations.

And curtains.

This is going to be the best catio ever.

[Jasper meows]

Here you go, Jasper.

[meows]

Come on, Jasper. Give it a chance.

It's fun, see?

- [Michael] Oh, Jasper! No, wait!
- [howls]

- Look out!
- The decorations.

[Jasper howling]

- [Molly] No, Jasper, come back!
- [Michael groans]

- [Jasper grumbling]

[Michael] Jasper!

Jasper, come back!

Hmm. Things aren't going
as planned with the catio?

We spent all that time trying
to make it perfect for Jasper,

and he didn't even like it.

[sighs] He ran away.

And he didn't even use the ramp.

[sighs] That must have been frustrating.

Come. Sit with me.

[grunts] You have had a lot of ideas
for the catio, haven't you?

We tried to give Jasper
everything he could ever want.

It was totally styled out.

I don't get it.

If we were Jasper's size, we'd love it.

Yeah, you're right.
We gave him the best of the best.

The best of the best. Hmm.

I'm reminded of a very old story

about an empress who wanted
to give a magnificent bird

the best of the best.

You have a story for everything, Stillwater.

[laughs] That may be true, Michael.

Would you like to hear it?

Yes, please.

[Stillwater] The empress lived in a castle
overlooking the mighty sea below.

[Stillwater] One day, as she was
standing on her balcony,

she saw a wondrous sight.

[bird cawing]

[tweets]

[gasps] Why, hello.

Oh.

Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?

It is a very impressive eagle,
Your Majesty.

Prepare the royal aviary.

Are you certain you wish to keep
the bird here at the castle?

A bird this incredible
deserves to live in a palace,

and it should have only the very best.

[Stillwater] The empress placed
the bird inside the cage

with the finest perch built of gold,

but the bird did not wish to sit.

[cawing]

[Stillwater] She gave the bird a goblet
adorned with gems,

but the bird did not wish to drink.

[chirps]

[Stillwater] She gave the bird
all the finest delicacies in the land,

but the bird did not wish to eat.

[chirps]

[sighs] I have given the bird
all of the luxuries of the kingdom,

but nothing pleases it.

True. You have given the bird
everything fit for an empress.

Yes.

- But is it fit for a bird?
- What do you mean?

What use does a bird have
for a golden perch

or a gem-studded goblet?

You are meant to fly, aren't you?

[caws]

[cawing]

That was a good story, Stillwater.

Can you imagine a perch made of gold?

Or gems for a bird?

Or a doorbell for a cat.

Now that you mention it,
that does seem kind of silly.

Maybe we thought more about
what we wanted for the catio

than what Jasper needed.

Let's go clean up.

[Molly] Looks like Jasper is happy
with just a box.

Let me get the sun out of your eyes.

What are we going to do with the catio?

but I wonder if those chipmunks will.

This should be a safe place
for the chipmunks' winter home.

What do we call it?

- A "chipatio"?
- A "munkatio"?

- [in British accent] Chipmunkton Manor.
- I like it.

- Yeah.
- [chipmunks chattering]

[Molly] Actually, it looks like
the chipmunks are calling it home.

Ah.

[Karl] Stillwater, guess what?

Hello, Karl. Hello, Koo.

Are you going to take a nap?

[both laugh]

Well, sort of. These are our supplies.

Supplies?

Yeah. My mom and dad said
I could have a camp-out in the backyard.

A camp-out? How exciting.

It will be so fun,
and you can camp out with us.

Pretty, pretty please.

Well, I don't see any rain clouds.
I'd be delighted to join you.

- Yes!
- [laughs]

We have a tent and sleeping bags,

and everything we need
to be brave campers.

Well, I'm glad to be sleeping
under the stars with two brave campers.

How is your tent coming along,
Karl and Koo?

I've never built a tent before.

Hi, Stillwater.
It looks like you could use a hand, Karl.

We can do it ourselves.

I understand wanting to do it yourself.
I was the same way.

[grunting] Why won't these stick thingies
go together? It's too hard!

I remember setting up my first tent.
It was so complicated.

I had to ask my scout-leader for help.

You did?

I didn't know brave campers
could ask for help.

I think asking for help is a very brave
thing to do, don't you, Michael?

Well, we're brave.
So will you help us, Michael?

Sure. After you've done it
the first time, it's easy.

[both] Thank you.

[chuckles]

See? We push these stakes into the ground,
so the tent will stay put.

If you pull on the poles,
they snap into place. Like this.

Now we just clip the tent to the poles.

There we go. It's easy
once you know how to do it.

It looks good.

Not even Ginormous Robot
can knock it over.

We'll be very safe in here.

[chuckles] Happy camping, Karl and Koo.

I love hot cocoa.
Marshmallows are a real treat.

Camping is the best!

Mmm, delicious.

It makes me feel all warm inside.

Look at all the stars.
I see the whole universe.

Karl, lie down and see.

Wow, you're right.

[gasps] Look, Stillwater, a spaceship.

- [Koo] Whoa.
- [Karl gasps]

A spaceship would be fun to spot.

But that, I believe, is a lightning bug.

Wow.

[both yawn]

I think it's time for bed.

[both chuckling]

- [tent unzipping]
- [Koo giggles]

[both fake snoring]

[Karl, Koo chuckling]

[sighs] Good night, brave campers.

[Karl] Good night, Stillwater.

Psst, I can't sleep.

I can't sleep either.

It is really dark in here.
We need a night-light.

[grass rustling]

[both gasp]

There's something outside.

[growling]

It could be a tiger.

Or a big lion.

Should we peek outside to see?

That would show we're brave.

- [Jasper howls]
- [Karl, Koo yell]

[chuckling] Oh, it's just Jasper.

You scared us, silly Jasper.

[wind blowing]

- [groans] What's that noise?
- [grunts]

[both groaning]

Uh-oh, it's a big monster!

- Is everything all right?
- There's a monster out there.

[gasps] A monster? How interesting.

When I look over, I see the moon
casting a shadow from the tree.

[both sigh]

I'm right here if you need me.

We can do this, Koo.

Oh, we can do this.
It is going to be fine.

We are brave campers.

[wind blowing]

[owl hoots]

[both gasp, yelling]

[Koo panting]

I see you've moved
from your tent to under this table.

We're hiding.

Hiding?

It's too dark and too noisy,
and too scary.

Mmm.
I see how that might feel overwhelming.

When I feel that way,
I like to take a few deep breaths.

Would you like to try that with me?

Inhale.

- One, two, three, four, five.
- [Karl, Koo inhaling deeply]

- [Stillwater] And exhale.
- [Karl, Koo exhaling deeply]

Two, three, four, five.

I wanted to be a brave camper,
but I guess I'm not.

I'm not brave either.
Camping was a bad idea.

It should've been fun.

I understand. Perhaps a story
might help right now.

Okay. Your stories do always
make me feel better.

A brand-new pool opened up in Dustville.

[Stillwater] So, one day,

Cal and his friends
decided to go for a swim.

We got the whole place to ourselves.

[Lloyd] Whoa, yeah.

[Stillwater] Normally shy,
Cal was very eager to impress his friends

by jumping off the high dive.

Get ready.

I'm gonna do a cannonball,
a flying squirrel,

and I'm gonna finish off
with a triple flip.

I didn't know you were a skilled diver.
I can't wait to watch.

I can do this. I can do this.

[Stillwater]
But with each rung of the ladder,

Cal got more and more uncertain.

By the time he made it to the top,

he was sure he had made a mistake.

[Karl] Was he too scared to jump?

[Stillwater] It seemed that way.

[stammering]

Whoo! Maybe try the triple flip first.

[stammers] Good idea, Telly.

[chuckles, gulps]

[Lloyd] Is everything okay, Cal?

Oh... [chuckles, stammers]
...everything's fine.

Fine? You don't look fine.

[stammers] I'm... I'm... scared.

I don't think I can do it, Lloyd.

Hey, you don't have to jump off
the high dive if you're not ready.

Oh. You're right.

Maybe I'm not ready to do a triple flip.
[chuckles]

Well, this diving board
will still be here when you are.

Um... [stammers] ...maybe we can
jump in together from the side?

- Whoo-hoo!
- [Cal grunts]

[all laughing]

Cal wanted to be brave, just like us.

This is true.

And Cal wasn't ready, just like us.

It's okay to change your mind.

Being able to acknowledge how you feel
and adjusting to that,

is a very brave thing to do.

Can we sleep in here instead?

What a wonderful idea, Karl.

I love that idea.

It's still camping, just inside.

We can see the stars.

[all sigh]

[Karl, Koo snoring]

[laughs, sighs]
