these five monsters

are fighting for a place
in the next round of the competition,

and they'll be giving it
everything they've got

because the winner of this season
will dance away with 250,000 dollars.

When I'm not a monster,

I'm a quarterback
for my college football team in Iowa.

[Chester] The football world is
very masculine

so I've always been picked on
about dancing

but I'm not your typical jock.

In real life,
I'm actually quiet and reserved.

I want to prove that boys dance too,

and we can dance contemporary as well.

Becoming a monster for me
was just so cool.

Oh, this is sick.

Chester gives me that confidence
to be myself.

Isn't it weird that a funny,
one-eyed alien,

is what it took
for me to believe in myself?

In the dance, I do four pirouettes,

and there is a decent chance that
that could go wrong,

so that just adds
another level of pressure.

That takes so much control.

I've got to say, I really feel like
you might need to go ahead

about that performance

on a critical note,

as the song grew and grew and grew,

I felt like your gear didn't change.

And I would have loved
to have seen the choreography,

the moves and even the difficulty
go up a step with the music.

Hi, I'm Grummy the mummy.
I've been dead for about 3,000 years but

that hasn't k*lled my passion for dance.

[Grummy] Seeing my monster
the first time was amazing.

Oh, they're gonna love you.

Like, I am a freaking mummy right now.

You can see through my leg,
my arm, peekaboo.

I work at a science museum
in Queens, New York.

I used to have a dream to be a dancer

but my dance career started taking a lull

and I didn't have any money.

So, I left dance to work at the museum.

I thought,
"Okay, I'm done being a dancer."

Now Dance Monsters
has given me the opportunity

to get my dream back, you know?

Winning a quarter of a million dollars
would mean so much to me.

I could help my family,
I could help myself.

I could do a lot of good in the world
with that kind of money.

that I'm a little worried about.

So many things can go wrong.

How are you feeling?

I'm just trying
not to come unraveled right now.

Grummy, you are
what Dance Monsters is about,

because becoming a monster
is an opportunity

to bring something to the stage.

To bring a story to life.

It's obvious you have crazy skills.

[Ashley Banjo] You gave us, like,
locking and popping elements.

You gave us the back somersault on beat,
the mills, the B-Twist.

But you lost momentum towards the end.
I think the energy started to dip.

But the way that you embodied
that character made me say,

"That's what
being a monster is all about".

-[Ashley Banjo] Well done, Grummy.

Is it hard to pop and lock
without muscles?

'Cause it's just bandages
and but like, you were sticking the moves.

I do feel like, however, I love groove

but at the same time,
I'm kind of a stickler for moves that,

you to work on that

I enjoyed watching you
because you were in your character.

were like a mummy,

I mean, I was wrapped up
in your performance.

The judges all gave me
such great compliments.

I am, like, overwhelmed right now.

I love being Grummy. It's so great.

Is this thing on?

When I'm not this metal monster,

I'm a fitness instructor
from London, England.

When I was a kid,
I would see these music videos

and it was, like, magic to me.

[Roberta] And I was, like,
"I want to do that."

But my family is very conservative.

They found my dancing provocative
and they disapproved.

I had to dance in secret in my bedroom.

It sounds absolutely crazy

but I haven't told my family
that I'm on Dance Monsters.

Hi, Mom.
[chuckles]

As soon as I saw Roberta...

[yelps]
Oh, my god! I'm a robot!

...there was just an instant connection.

I can work with that.

When I dance,
Roberta gives me a lot of freedom

in the sense that I can express myself.
I can be true to myself.

I'm nervous
because I do feel like an underdog.

Because it's alien to me.

I danced in my bedroom
and now I'm dancing on a big stage.

[Ashley] Hoping to impress the panel

then has to translate through your moves.

I feel like, should you get
to the next round,

I always wanted
to be a professional dancer.

[Rocky] You get paid to do what you love.
I couldn't beat that.

I wanted to tour. I wanted to be
in music videos.

I wanted to do it all.

But I, uhm... I met a girl.

And we had beautiful daughters.

So I put dance on the back burner
and got a good old nine-to-five.

I work from home as an insurance agent

'cause I wanted to make sure
I was there for my kids.

[Rocky laughs]

Becoming Rocky,
it's a million times more cool

than I could have ever imagined it to be.

That is so wild.

Dance Monsters is literally
a second chance.

And being Rocky
just allows me to really perform

at a level that I'd never thought
I'd be able to see again.

Definitely been a challenge
to keep up with this routine

because it's so quick.

And I ain't getting any younger.

Things are breaking down,

I'm just hoping that I have the energy

and it really hit the audience
the way I think it looks in my head.

I feel like, okay, here's the opportunity,

and the thing
that is really catching my eye

is how much the monster plays
to their character.

I just, I don't feel like
there was enough playing

to the rock monster that you are.

A little bit more of that,
should you make it to the next round,

and I'm happy.

-[Lele] It was really good.

When I see a dancer enjoying to dance,
like, I enjoy it too.

[Lele] But I found myself
watching the background dancers

rather than you sometimes.

I wonder
if I would have enjoyed it as much

if the background dancers wasn't there.

-[Ashley] Right.
-[Lele] Yeah.

Sometimes they outshined you.
You know what I mean?

[Ashley] Yeah,
you're being honest tonight.

Ashley, what did you think
of Rocky's performance?

You're like the biggest, toughest,

but friendliest happy monster
in the competition.

I sort of loved that contrast.

because I didn't wanna mess it up.

That's okay.

I just feel bad, you know.

There's a lot of money on the line here,

Big decisions on the way for the panel,

but not before this last monster
has had their time in the spotlight.

The opportunity to become
a professional dancer has been so close.

I got auditioned for J-Lo,
Justin Bieber, and Beyoncé.

But then I got a serious shoulder injury

that prevented me
from even being able to dance.

Being injured
definitely knocked my confidence.

I thought that the dream was over
and it was the end.

When I first saw Flame...

[gasps]

Oh, my god!

...I could relate to her right away.

She is the person I used to be

before all the disappointments
and setbacks.

That is me.

[rock music]

Flame is bringing out of me
the confidence I once had and lost.

She's actually fire.

[producer] Flame, I'll take you through.

And the aerial with the end just shows me
you've got all of that physicality.

I think that sometimes

it was a big learning experience

and I put my heart and soul out there

which three monsters

you're going to move straight through
to the next stage of the competition.

We're here to judge

Yeah. I like Roberta.

The slow moves that she was giving me off
was, like, my favorite part about her.

I don't think she captured that
how I would have wanted her to.

I really liked her moves.

-Yeah, fair enough. Yeah.
-I felt that she really wants this.

We all did our thing. Now the panel's

-How are you all feeling?

[Ne-Yo] I was genuinely not expecting him
to do what he did.

It's like, I'm sitting here,
I'm watching a monster with one eye

and a floating eyebrow,
and I'm about to cry.

We're a monster family.

[Ne-Yo] I feel like Flame was good
but she wasn't great.

But what she is, is she's individual.
She's quite unique still.

I just, you know,
I wanted more personality from her.

[Ashley Banjo] Rocky's got
good vibes, you know.

Rocky's a big, happy monster.

-Rocky had great energy.

You just never know,
like, what their personal opinion is.

but we did all come to a decision.

I am a natural-born dancer,
and dancing isn't a temporary thing.

to prove my family wrong.

We think they've got
a real individual flavor and style.

with the opportunity of a lifetime.

After all the setbacks,

me getting to know who you are
as your monster

is gonna be important as well.

I think both of you dance with heart.
You dance with passion.

You left it all out there,
but my decision was based on

the monster that shocked me the most.

One of you brought things to the stage
I didn't even know you could do.

So the monster that I'm going to save...

I was really hoping that one of you was

One of these monsters showed me

that though I was not terribly impressed
with the first performance,

that there's definitely more
in the arsenal.
