Wilde Girls, The (2025)

Post by bunniefuu »

I wanna be loved by you

Bedump dedump dedump dedump

Boop boop a doop

It was a day like any

other in Manhattan.

The city that never sleeps.

And a day like any

other for the Wilde family.

A family of such means,

they are considered American royalty.

Heiresses Tinsley and

Mattie Wilde, sisters who,

due to their good fortune, are

among the wealthiest of the elite.

Some estimate their father's

worth to be several kings ransoms.

Tinsley, and Mattie Wilde

attend the exclusive premiere of

the latest Charlie Chaplin movie,

"City Lights", alongside

the master Chaplin himself.

And the world's elites.

Then disaster strikes as stocks collapse.

Billions of dollars vanish.

Many in despair take their own life,

including aristocrat Cornelius Wilde.

With the bulk of his fortunes wiped out.

Even so, the Wilde sisters

are still sitting pretty, as it is rumored

the heiresses are to inherit

the vast family estates.

Cornelius Wilde's

two sisters, reportedly

cut from the land inheritance

are reduced to going before

the general public for help.

I am one of the sweet lambs.

Lambs just lambs.

Lambs just lambs.

Don't say just lambs.

Not just any lambs.

Oh for the love of Pete, move on.

Moving on.

I am one of the lambs

that Wall Street has shorn.

I, along with the rest of my

family, have lost our millions.

The coat. Talk about the coat.

And now all I have left

is this chinchilla coat...

that I paid $25,000 for.

And if there's anyone watching this

who could buy my coat, I wish you would.

Move on.

But the fates have the last

laugh as Cornelius Wilde's will

was not located. An earlier will

leaves the estates to Cornelius'

sisters Beatrice and Florence Wilde.

Tinsley Wilde and Mattie Wilde

now impoverished,

are sent off to the wilderness

of the Pacific Northwest, once

known as the Oregon Territory,

to pursue convalescence and

to mourn the death of their father.

All of this as the country sinks

into financial impoverishment,

the likes of which the

world has never seen.

The only thing we have to fear is...

fear itself.

Once I lived a life of a millionaire

Spending my money I didn't care

Then I began to fall so low

I didn't have a friend

And no place to go

But if I ever get my

hands on a dollar again

I'm gonna hold on to it

Nobody knows you

When you're down and out

Nobody knows you

When you're down and out

I mean when you down and out

When you down and out

Nobody knows you

When you down and out

I mean when you down and out

Beautiful girl

This is Tinsley Wilde, my little sister.

Dazzling but dangerous.

And that's me, Mattie.

The less glamorous one.

Tinsley's not evil, just blissfully unaware

like a cat walking through traffic.

But I digress.

This is the story of

how we lost our fortune

and learned that diamonds aren't

the only things made under pressure.

What?

I said shut up.

No you didn't.

I was thinking it.

I was thinking you should shut your smug,

ill-shaped poor blood mouth.

Tinsley, I haven't said a single

word for the last 20 minutes.

Oh, but you wanted to.

I could feel you sitting there...

thinking things.

If you are referring to my knowledge

of how a telegraph office works...

That. There. Your...

workmen's knowledge of things.

Tinsley, I don't think it takes any

sort of special knowledge to know that

you cannot simply yell at the man for

him to get our Aunt Beatrice on the line

as if people out here just somehow

know who are Aunt Beatrice,

almost 3000 miles back

in New York City, is.

And that they just have her

telephone number on file, somehow.

You are so boring and tedious.

You just made a speech about something

nobody knows about, poor

blood, and nobody cares about.

I'm Mattie.

You never call me by my name.

That's what I said.

Poor blood. I called you by your name.

And this is not New York City.

As you have been reminding me for...

Oh, dear Mary, 2000 miles.

2851 miles.

That, right there.

I heard you every minute of

every day for the last seven days.

I was being metaphorical.

You know there's something

wrong with you, poor blood.

It's figurative, not metaphorical.

And there's something wrong with me.

You said it.

I was just repeating what you said.

I know that deep down.

Not that deep down, mind you.

You want to tell me all about the

filthy little halfwits that are here

and why they are all so

dowdy looking with soiled and

spotted clothing and all looking

so slovenly, unkempt inelegant, dirty...

Are you finished?

Unfashionable.

Stained. Did I say stained?

Tinsley, the call has gone through.

Your party's already on the line, ma'am.

Here.

Do you not have a private booth?

No, ma'am.

You seriously can't expect me

to have a conversation out here

in the open wilderness?

No, ma'am, I don't expect anything.

Don't be droll.

There are insects.

Ma'am, I doubt the insects

will be listening in.

Impertinent.

I want your name. Give me your name.

Buford, ma'am.

Well...

Buford...

I am going to make life very hard for you.

Tinsley, may we stay

focused? Aunt Beatrice.

Your party's

already on the line, ma'am.

Very well.

Hello?

Aunt Beatrice?

Im pretty sure L. Frank Baum

came up with the Wicked Witch of the West

after meeting my Aunt Beatrice.

Please hold for Miss Beatrice Wilde.

Has it been cleaned?

Yes, ma'am.

Hello, Matilda. Is this Matilda?

No. You know it's Tinsley.

Our attorney Mr. Cantilever told

me Matilda would be on the line.

It's Tinsley. I thought you might

hang up if you knew it was me.

I expected you to dominate

Matilda, so I'm not surprised.

Dominate?

She tortured me all the way here

with her endless useless facts about -

How are you, darling?

Have you settled into the new house?

We haven't seen it yet, dear auntie.

Has Mr. Birdwhistle

located my father's will?

We will notify you the

moment he locates it.

How?

By pigeon?

There probably isn't a

telephone at the new house.

Hello.

Will there be a telephone?

Where we are staying?

Telephone.

Can he hear me?

Mattie is he dumb?

Results are all that

matters, Mr. Cantilever.

This is an earned relationship.

We Wilde's did not become endlessly

wealthy by giving things away.

Except for to charities.

Now we have to get

onto a tiny little deathboat

and be driven to the end of the world

for reasons I am still not sure why.

I don't believe you say

driven. I believe it is piloted.

Shut up!

What?

Now we have to get into

a tiny little death boat...

No, not you dear.

Except for the charities, when

we get things away to charities.

My dear sister it is not

giving anything away

If you make more money

from it than you spent.

I know my father never wouldn't

have died without leaving a will.

Obviously, we all didn't know your

father as well as we thought we did.

Just say it -

because he shot himself,

when you were just a child

your mother made me

promise to look out for you.

No one knows where my mother is.

And if you promise to look out for me,

why don't you?

It was unnecessary, dear.

Your every need was prearranged

and fulfilled by a small army

of servants, nannies and tutors.

And here you are.

Yes. Here we are. Cut off.

I thought you favored Mattie, at least.

How could you leave her out

here in the middle of nowhere?

It is only for a short while

until the ugly society columnists

quiet down.

You're embarrassing the family.

Sit it out for a while in paradise,

and then we will quietly have you back.

I know how to take care of family.

You know we don't

believe you, Aunt Beatrice.

I believe there is a clicking on the line.

Is that right?

I can't hear a thing.

She gave us the bum's rush.

We're behind the eight ball now.

We knew we were in trouble...

but in our overly pampered,

wildest imaginations,

we had absolutely no idea

what was coming for us.

Sharks.

There are sharks in the water.

Oh, I think they are broad nose six gills.

Tiger sharks.

Are they dangerous?

How can you tell?

Their snout is more bluntly rounded.

Oh I see.

We are going to die

and you are talking about the shapes

of the mouths of the sharks

that are going to eat us.

This gentleman knows what he's doing.

I'm sure he wouldn't bring us out

here if he knew we were going to die.

So what was it really

like being Tinsley's sister?

Crisis management.

Improvising in situations no

one could have possibly imagined.

Like at the Paris fashion show,

when Tinsley jumped up on stage

and ripped a runway model's dress off

because she wanted to

protect everyone from bad taste.

Who will bring me my cigarettes out here?

I'm sure there are none.

You shouldn't be smoking.

Are none?

As in no servants?

You mean I have to

procure my own cigarettes?

No. None as in, no cigarettes.

Nobody told me I'd have to give

up smoking to come out here.

That's it.

I'm done.

I want to go back.

I want to go back.

I want to go back.

Take it back the other way now.

Did you hear me?

I want to go back.

I wish to return.

There's nothing for us to return to.

I insist you turn this little

skiff around, monkey man.

Or shall I have you fired?

Do you hear me?

Oh, no! Oooh!

Ohooooaah!

You clumsy dumb troglodite.

Those are my underthings.

The finest garments from France and Italy.

Oh!

We... are going to die!

We're passing on

From shore to shore

Rough rocks

May be at hand

The winds may cry

And storms may roar

Before we reach the land

Hello?

Where is the person who

is supposed to meet us?

Mr. boatman, please be careful with that.

Poor blood, my shoes are being ruined.

Am I not speaking in the

way that he understands?

Clearly, the working class in

these regions are not up to the same

level of culture as our local routine

work-a-day class back at home.

Hello?

There's nobody here.

Where do we find a telephone?

There are no telephones.

Is there a car service?

Do you see any roads?

Well, what are we to do? There

isn't even a cabana or lounge.

You cannot leave us here.

Hey, captain fish-for-brains.

I haven't eaten in hours.

Mattie, tell him I'm evaporating!

Oh please, please, please Mr. boatman.

Please do not leave us here.

My sister, she cannot help her rudeness.

Her behavior is off putting

and she's missing something.

When it comes to thinking

of others, it is an affliction.

Mattie.

She really is quite harmless.

Oh, with the exception of when she

put the cigarette out on your back or...

or when she slammed the

door of the train cabin on our...

waiter's fingers, or whe...

Mattie.

Yes. Now that I look at it

on it's face, I can see

why you are leaving us here.

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May you always know happiness

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the lands of friends always be near

May you always know happiness

It is definitely a cut path.

I don't know about a road.

If a motor car can drive on this.

But we can walk.

To where?

And what about our luggage?

Yes. That needs to be our priority.

I can't do it alone.

I have never carried a bag

in my life. Let alone a trunk.

Besides my purse, I mean.

Yes, Tinsley,

I know. This is not a surprise

to anyone who has ever met you,

but if you want to keep any

of the things you have left

you have left, you are

going to have to pitch in.

What are you doing?

You're leaving your

Hermes gold purse there...

on that dirty log?

Do you see a table?

It'll ruin the surface.

The gold will tarnish.

Gold doesn't technically tarnish.

It could possibly discolor or disintegrate

if it came into contact

with some bleach or salts.

But, not tarnish.

Hey. Gold doesn't technically tarnish,

blah, blah blahblah blahblah blah.

I hate you.

Yes, you always tell me.

Gold.

Yes, yes, the clasps are made of gold.

We can sell the gold if we need to.

I am not selling my purse.

It's a 24 karat gold

handbag coated in diamonds.

We can sell the diamonds too.

What are you saying?

I would rather die.

It might happen, Tinsley.

There are more important things right now.

Who are you?

The tide is coming in.

Our things will either float

away or sink to the bottom.

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May you always know happiness

Wait.

I can't walk this fast.

There's no sidewalk.

Nope. No there isn't.

Mattie, there's a werewolf coming at us.

We don't even have

garlic or a silver b*llet.

Garlic is for vampires.

This is Canis lupus.

What?

Oh, it is not a werewolf. It is a wolf.

It looks like it wants to eat us.

What should we do?

It's odd.

I read in a book that most wild

animals won't just approach you.

Well, maybe he didn't read that book.

It's not what they are supposed to do.

Wolves don't just approach you.

Okay, well, maybe he's a loner, wolf. Like.

Like a stupid loner like you.

Yeah, like a loner wolf.

Why are you laughing?

Really?

Maybe he's a loner wolf? Lone wolf.

You don't think that's funny?

He's getting closer.

He's not slowing down.

What do we do?

I don't know, I got my

lowest grades in zoology.

Headmistress Mary said things

like this would happen if I didn't study.

Really? That dried up old shrew

told you your life would be

ruined if you didn't study zoology.

No, not zoology per se.

I aced zoology.

No you didn't you had someone

else take the test for you?

I attended the classes

and took the test for myself.

I would have rather have poked

out my left eye than taken zoology.

Okay, well, maybe if you studied in school,

you would know what to do right now.

Oh my God. School.

Shut up about school all the time.

School this. School

that. You are so boring.

I've only ever seen

wolves at the Bronx Zoo.

And they just walked around in circles

looking like they wanted to eat you.

They walked in circles

because they were in a cage.

Oh, what do we do?

He's not slowing down.

I don't know. I don't know.

Should we go in the water?

Do wolves go in the water?

Hello?

Tinsley, I think the way

this creature is moving,

I think he may have

something like... rabies.

Rabies? Did you say rabies?

Yes. I read about this in a book.

I think we should try to

move up off the beach

and climb one of the trees.

Okay, we'll turn... and

see if he follows us, yes?

Yes.

Okay yes, yes, it's definitely rabies.

Uuh.

It's way higher up here than it looks.

Wolves don't climb trees!

I thought you said he doesn't climb trees!

That's what I read in a zoology book!

Where did you get this zoology book?!

Off of a street vendor in Times Square?

I cannot do this.

I'm not prepared. I've no

sporting abilities like you.

I was made for high fashion couture.

I don't think he likes

the sound of your voice.

I'm the one with the pretty voice.

The creature clearly has no taste.

And I am the one who studied.

I studied how to attract a husband.

Maybe you can ask your

husband to remove this wolf.

I was going to marry an Astor.

And you were going to be an old maid.

What? What?

Our purses!

Oh. Oh oh!

Tinsley stop! What are you doing?

I'm saving my purse.

No, you are not.

I got that in Paris. It cost $10,000.

Well, things are different now.

What are those beasts?

I think they're raccoons,

judging by their stripes.

What do they want with my lipstick?

My makeup?

Maybe they're trying to attract a husband.

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May you always know happiness

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

May you always know happiness

May you always know happiness

In our whole lives,

we never slept on anything

less than thousand thread

count silk Italian sheets,

let alone in the branches

of a bug infested tree.

We are going to die.

Stop with that.

I'm so cold.

Look.

We're saved.

Hey there.

Oh, civilization returns.

Tinsley, we do not know this man.

She has mental problems.

I do not have mental problems.

Notice how she's becoming

agitated. We try not to alarm her.

You tomatoes are the

Wilde cousins, are you not?

How dare you use such

language, my dear sir.

Dames?

No.

Babes?

Nope.

You broads are the...

Nope.

You birds of the Wilde

cousins, are you not?

We are not cousins. We are sisters.

Half sisters. Her mother

died before I was born.

Their breeding was inconsequential.

My mother's Irish lineage can be

traced back to the knights in the 1500s.

They were of the Brays and the Banes...

knights, a minor nobility.

Thus poor blood.

I'm just here to take you where

you need to go. To the house.

Oh. What about our luggage?

Where is it?

Oh boy I'm lucky

I'll swear I'm lucky

This is my lucky da-a-a-a-a-a-y

The address is right,

but this has to be a mistake.

I don't even think it is a house.

I believe it is a boathouse.

A boathouse?

Where do we find a telephone?

I can get you to Port Townsend.

There should be a telephone there.

How far away is it?

Hundred miles, give or take.

A button man.

What?

A button man.

It's the name they give to somebody

who makes people disappear.

A button man.

What an... interesting piece

of trivia that you have held onto

when you stumbled across it.

Yeah, my last name is Button,

so I remembered it from when I was a kid.

You know, things you

pick up in the neighborhood.

Oh. That's just wonderful.

Yap. Yap.

So much better than...

you know, my grandmother.

She used to say, I don't give a button.

Buttons are... quite a funny

thing... when you think about it.

I figured you was the smart one.

You got a good conk.

Conk. I don't understand what you mean.

Well you two dolls clearly come from money

and you're both lookers.

I mean, you would be if you dolled

yourself up a bit like your sister.

You got a wise head, you know.

Oh, you mean to say I'm intelligent?

Well, I wouldn't go as far

as to say intelligent, but...

I see you brought a previously

undisclosed firearm out into the open.

I thought I saw a bear earlier.

A bear?! A real live bear.

Now, considering I said

you was the smart one,

I wouldn't bring a firearm

if I saw a stuffed bear.

Oh, no, no, no, you wouldn't.

No, no, I wouldn't.

No no no no no, you wouldn't.

That doesn't make any sense, heh, heh.

So... where do you hail from, Mr. Button?

Originally I'm from England,

but I moved over to San Francisco

a few years back,

and then my employer decided to

keep me out here

on the frontier of civilization, and...

You don't want to hear about me.

I usually try and not get too

close to my contractor's interests.

And by contractors interests,

you mean clients

you escort and protect.

Something like that.

Mattie.

Well, I'm Matilda, but

nobody calls me that.

I'm Button.

You said.

Oh, you've tarnished it, you imbecile.

Tinsley, you're having a bad dream.

Oh, I was having a dream where

the help was going through my closet.

Oh, no.

Where are we?

About 45 miles from Quilcene.

That sounds Indian.

I've seen them in movies.

Movies.

The native tribes out here are

nothing like they are in the movies.

Why do you have a shotgun?

Mmmmmm.

That's a r*fle.

I fired a shotgun once.

Skeet sh**ting when I was a girl.

Why do you have a r*fle?

He thought he saw a bear.

Big big bear.

A bear! That sounds

so fancifully dangerous.

Mr. Button here informed me

that he was hired to take care of us.

Really more of a contract

job. Like a freelancer.

Yeah, he was contracted

to take care of us, like I said.

Oh, so you work for our aunts.

Button.

I knew a Button in London.

Oh, well, actually, the Button

surname actually goes back to the 1200s

when the Anglo-Saxons

ruled over Britain.

Oh, no, that's not it.

Button, nnn button button, button.

Who's got the button?

I go crazy when I can't remember something.

It's right there on the tip of my tongue.

Well, actually it's truly

just a metonimic name.

Originally derived from

It was in the New York Times. Yes.

Something about a mobster execution.

It was so dreadfully frightening.

They called the man

who did the k*lling a...

Actually, it it's just a French

word bouton meaning,

button.

Button. Man. Yes.

The man they hired to do

the k*lling was a button man.

And your name is Button,

that is how I remember things.

So when I want to remember

your name, I would just think

Button man. A button man, a

psychopathic m*rder*r for hire.

I will never forget you. Now.

Nope.

Tinsley, I tried to stop you,

and I know you will

not forgive me for this.

What is? Wait. What are you doing?

What?

Wait! Oy!

Oh, you are certifiably insane.

You were trying to k*ll

yourself and take me with you.

I am not insane. I'm saving our lives.

You always get panic attacks!

I do not!

What about Buckingham palace?

I nearly had to call someone to assist you.

It wasn't that bad.

Yes it was. You were breathing

like a carp and making sounds.

I was having a mild allergic

reaction to the shellfish.

As if you have seen a carp breathe.

You had a panic attack.

You yelled out in front of the

King of England at a dinner party.

I think everybody there, including

the king, had a panic attack.

Aha, I did not yell out to the

king. I just called out to him

Okay, you were not supposed to engage

in conversation with the King of England

at a dinner party at all. Ever.

Didn't you graduate finishing school?

Oh. Oh, how dare you!

I am bruised and scratched

and my dress is torn.

Royals are supposed to

begin the conversation.

You will notice they start it so

they can take control of their time.

They have to be in control.

Their time is valuable.

How do you draw attention to yourself

if you're not allowed to draw attention

to yourself?

Tinsley, not to change the subject

but Mr. Button is coming

down the hillside above you.

Oh.

Mr. Button, help! My sister

is certifiably insane!

You two times dames, skirts,

whatever, are crazy.

I'm not trying to k*ll you.

I'm trying to get you to

where you need to go.

Yes, I plan on getting where I need

to go, but not for a very long time.

Oh, that's clever.

You think I'm saying where you need to go

is some sort of metaphor for death.

Exactly.

And the only reason you

are talking to us right now

is so you can slow us down

and get the upper hand.

That's absurd.

See, Mattie.

I mean, it's true, but it's absurd.

So you are going to k*ll us?

Well, yes, I am going to k*ll you.

Oh. Did you see that?

Poor blood he's trying to k*ll us.

Don't take it so personally.

Times are hard.

A fellow's gotta make a living.

You hit him.

You're welcome.

Of course he's bleeding.

I hit him with a log.

Oh, eeeew.

You girls be good girls

and get grandma some tea.

Let's go.

What? What?

Drive, Mattie, drive.

I don't know how to drive.

Why am I sitting in the seat?

Just because I'm sitting in this seat

does not mean I know how to drive.

Yes you do. You studied how to do this.

No I did not. You know so many

lower mechanical kinds of people.

I studied engineering in a library

on 42nd Street in Manhattan.

I know nothing about cars.

Well, all I know is you tell the

little man where you want to go.

Do you see a little man? Look

for a manual, some kind of book.

Is this it?

Yes, yes, that's definitely it. Oh,

it says here, before starting

the car, fill the radiator

by removing the cap top,

with clean fresh water.

A radiator? Like up against a

wall there's a radiator in this thing?

Yes. I don't think that's relevant.

When filling the tank, be sure

that there are no naked flames.

No.

Just... start the engine and drive.

Here we are.

Under the steering

wheel are two small levers.

The right hand throttle lever controls

the amount of mixture, gasoline and air,

which then entirely...

Just shut up.

Starting the engine is

done by winding the crank

handle at the front of the car.

The low voltage magneto provides...

You have to go in the front

of the car and turn the crank.

Will I turn a key?

What are you talking about? I'm

not going to turn a crank, okay?

Okay, the spark lever should usually be

fully Ret*rded all the

way up on the quadrant.

What is a quadrant?

I don't want to turn a crank.

The throttle should be

placed in about the sixth notch.

I want to throttle you right now.

The lever in this position holds

the clutch in neutral and engages

the hub brake, thus preventing the car

moving forward when

the engine is started.

I'm not going to turn any crank.

Wait, it looks like you don't have to.

It says on cars without starters

insert the switch key

and turn the key to the left.

That's counterclockwise.

I'm going to be shot to

death with poor blood, reads

gobbledygook from an

automobile operation manual.

Gobbledygook is talk or

writing that is long and pompous.

This manual is actually written

with articulation and clarity.

Insert the switch key

and turn the key to the left.

That's counterclockwise.

I know which way left is.

You don't have to say counterclockwise.

I am not saying it. The manual is.

This model has a built in

starter so you don't have to crank.

See that the hand lever, which

extends to the floor of the car

at the left of the driver, is pulled back.

Thus preventing the car moving

forward when the engine is starting.

Oh.

What did you do?

I pulled the lever.

Not that lever!

Oh, hell, we are not going

to figure this out in time.

Hell. You're always yelling at

me for saying blasphemous things.

Okay, well, hell is not

technically blasphemous.

It is considered impolite

and proper company.

It is better to say, oh heck. Heck,

referring to the Trojan Hector.

Oh, that is just peachy.

I want to hear all about

the Trojan horses right now.

You mean, warrior Hector was

a Trojan warrior, not a horse.

That is fascinating. You imbecile.

Trojan horse is what the Greek

soldiers used to overtake the city of Troy.

A giant wooden horse.

I don't care.

Oh my God.

The way you just

referred to God right there,

That was blasphemous.

I am in heck right now.

Ladies, you can't hide from me.

I hate these dames!

Oh.

Babyface. You've got

the cutest little babyface

There's not another one who'd

take your place. Babyface

Who designed this forest?

It's a walking hazard.

Forests aren't designed.

They just grow.

Tinsley, I think your strap is broken.

Let me fix it.

What a crumb that guy was.

I'm so hungry.

Go for scone or some crumpets.

Maybe a cucumber sandwich.

Perhaps some salmon croquettes with trifle

and meringue for dessert.

There are none of those things out here.

We do have a r*fle.

We could find a bird or a

squirrel and sh**t it and cook it.

A squirrel.

You're not joking.

I mean, we don't even know the first thing

about hunting or even

how to cook something.

Well, I know a small amount about cooking.

I once watched our chef

in our kitchen back at home.

You went to our kitchen?

Yes. Once.

When I was 12, I was playing hide and

seek with our au pair and I stumbled on it.

Really? What was it like?

It was loud and bright.

Lots of pots atop stoves

and breads in the ovens.

And are you telling me the truth?

Yes, I swear it.

And this isn't just

something you read in a book.

No, I met our chef and our sous chef.

I've never been.

I'm a bit jealous.

Once they discovered me, they ushered me

back up to my room and swore me to secrecy.

You know, our au pair would

have been fired for it.

Oh, yes. Father would have been so angry.

So beneath you to hovel in the kitchen.

And you surprise me.

I thought you hardly ever left your room.

Hardly ever.

That will hold.

You can walk on it now.

I have... I had, so many

pairs of shoes in my luggage.

Yes, I know.

All at the bottom of the

ocean now. Remember?

Thankfully, we didn't die of thirst

because we were able

to drink from the streams.

But we hadn't eaten in two and a half

days, and both of us were beginning

to hallucinate that a waiter with a

silver tray of oysters was following us.

sh**t the bird.

These are different sizes.

They all look the same to me.

Some are bigger.

So how do you sh**t a r*fle?

A b*llet fired from

a r*fle is characterized by increasing

acceleration from expanding gases.

The energy transmitted to the b*llet

with a given mass will depend upon

mass times force times the time

interval over which the force is applied.

Times of the forces of the

barrel of the interventions.

sh**t it already.

Relax.

No, you relax.

It's looking at us.

Do you know anything practical

about how to sh**t a r*fle?

I'm trying to tell you what I know.

Of course.

A b*llet fired from a r*fle

will have more energy than

a b*llet fired from a handgun.

It is difficult to measure the forces

within the g*n barrel, but the one easily

measured parameter is the velocity

with which the b*llet exits the barrel.

This is why you will never find a husband.

If we do not get it,

I will not eat a squirrel.

I will just let myself die.

Okay, well, I have to

take into account factors

such as wind resistance

and fall off angle of the b*llet.

Just sh**t the bird.

My stomach is screaming at

me, causing me a deep headache.

Oh my God.

Okay, we'll need to cook it.

We'll need a fire.

Just sh**t it.

I will try.

I missed.

Just give it to me.

What? Do you even know how?

I watched you. Shut up.

You shot it.

Of course I did.

I fired a shotgun once when I

was a girl, and I play tennis, don't I?

What is tennis have to do with ballistics?

Shut up.

Let's go retrieve our dinner.

It's blown to bits.

Well, of course it is.

You didn't sh**t it in the eye.

When sh**ting a bird with a r*fle,

you have to sh**t it in

the eye or it will explode.

Why don't you tell me that before?

Well, you told me to shut up.

Ladies, where are we hiding?

This isn't a game of

hide and seek, you know.

I need to use the powder room.

There probably

isn't a powder room in 200 miles.

Oh, no

no no no no, poor blood,

I think I'm urinating on my leg.

Yes, yes, I'm definitely

urinating on my leg.

Do you have a tissue?

That is very funny.

What do I do?

Shake it off.

Find a leaf.

Oh. Oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh.

It bit me.

Leaves don't bite.

Oh. Oh.

Oh. These are nettles.

They have very painful barbs.

Owee.

We need to get to a telephone.

We have to report Mr. Button.

I want to go home.

First, we needed to eat or we'd die.

I want to go home.

The only thing I feared

more than starvation,

was the thought of being a ghost

trapped in the forest with Tinsley's

ectoplasmic tantrums for all eternity.

This just in.

The latest news from all across America.

The hardships of the Great

Depression as a result of the infamous

Wall Street stock market

collapse grow ever deeper.

Relief agencies are struggling

to meet the overwhelming demand

for aid, as the cries for

help grow louder by the day.

The wealthy of New

York City attend the annual

haute couture extravaganza,

where millions of dollars are spent

by the elite on the latest Paris fashions

and the world's rich and famous live

out the most wild dreams money can buy.

Rumors of the whereabouts

of the Wilde girl heiresses

Tinsley and Mattie have not quieted

since their departure for the wilderness

of the Pacific Northwest.

The rumor mill has been fueled

by speculation they will not return,

just as their elite, privileged mother,

Louise Wilde, vanished years earlier.

Meanwhile, the new heirs

to the Cornelius Wilde estate,

Beatrice and Florence Wilde,

are closing the family charity,

the Cornelius Foundation,

that feeds thousands

of impoverished children.

Miss Wilde, how do you justify

the closing of this important charity?

They say the way to

ultimate prosperity is to be kind.

Well, I say it is to be firm.

If you give a man a fish,

he will eat for a day.

But if you take away the fish, he

will become an industrious worker.

We don't want a country where

children learn the wrong lessons,

that they can get things for free.

It will make them grow up weak and soft.

Miss Wilde,

what do you think about when

people point out the words of Jesus?

I am the bread of life.

Whoever comes to me will never go

hungry, and whoever believes in me

will never be thirsty.

They should turn to Jesus for handouts.

What are you doing here?

You don't belong here.

Tell your stomach to shut up.

That wasn't my stomach.

Give me a b*llet.

Hurry up. Give me a b*llet already.

sh**t it in the eye.

I know, I know.

What do you think?

I forgot already?

You ladies are going to be bear food.

There's a bear!

Don't miss.

Shut up or I'm going to miss.

There's a bear behind you!

Tinsley.

I told you to shut up.

Tinsley.

There is a man running at us with

a knife, and he looks very upset.

He's going to k*ll us.

sh**t him... sh**t him!

You have to sh**t him before he gets to us.

For once, I think you're right.

sh**t him in the eye.

Thank you, poor blood,

but we're not going to eat him.

What are you waiting for?

Oh, I can't do it. I've

never shot a man before.

It's just like sh**ting a bird.

No, no, it's not like

sh**ting a bird at all.

Remember, father always said people fail

when they can't do what needs to be done.

Advice from our father who shot himself

rather than facing life with no money.

All right, then we can tell

him that ourselves in heaven,

once, this man has slit our throats!

There's a bear behind you!

Wait.

What?

Wait. You were just

telling me to sh**t him!

Wait. No. I think he's

trying to get our attention.

I think he I think he's

trying to tell us something.

Look behind you!

Yes. No, I think he's saying...

- I think he's...

- Turn around!

I can't make it out.

He's saying...

A bear!

Bear.

Bear.

Yes, yes.

No, he is definitely saying bear.

He's saying that there is a...

There's a bear behind you!

That there is a bear...

behind us.

Bear behind us.

sh**ting him in the eye!

What is with you and the eye sh**ting?!

sh**t it in the eye!

Tinsley, sh**t the bear!

Shut up! I can't concentrate.

No, not the head!

The b*llet would just bounce off!

What did he say?!

sh**t it in a soft stomach!

He's saying you won't be able to

stop it by trying to sh**t it in the head.

You have to sh**t it in the stomach.

How am I supposed to

sh**t it in the stomach?

Crawl under it?

Oh.

Dear God, sh**t it now!

The r*fle jammed.

You can't stop that way!

Unjam your r*fle!

No! He said you won't be

able to stop it by trying to fight it.

You have to unjam your r*fle.

Well I can hear him now. I'm not deaf.

Give me some room.

We're going to die.

Is it dead?

Oh Lord, are you sure that it's dead?

It's dead.

We are covered in the monster.

What in God's green earth

are you two girls doing

out here in the wilderness?

Where's your momma and daddy?

My father shot himself.

And our mother vanished years ago.

I'm so sorry for you.

We don't need your pity.

What we need is to get to a

telephone so we can get back home.

Yes, you do need my pity.

People don't survive bear attacks.

Nobody survives bear attacks.

So you girls are lucky. Lucky. Lucky.

When a bear st*lks you like that,

a bear intends to k*ll... and eat you.

I seen a lot of things. But

that one's for the books.

Let me see that.

Really?

I just saved you from a bear.

This a 22 caliber.

You're going to sh**t a bear with a 22?

Girl, I thought this

was a thirty-aught-six.

Poor blood? What is he talking about?

30 otter sex?

I did not say Otter.

I said "aught", and your mama need

to wash your mouth out with soap

with that kind of talk.

She says things to be provocative.

She thinks it's stylish.

What do you know about stylish?

"Aught", thirty-aught-six.

That's the gauge of a r*fle.

See this here is a small

bird and squirrel sh**ter.

It won't k*ll most of

the predators out here.

Not unless you know what you're doing.

Look like it's about to rain soon.

You girls wait here while I go

get my truck from the other side.

Yes, sir.

Hey, what about the...

It's not going to bite you.

Keep on the sunny side,

always on the sunny side

Keep on the sunny side of life

It will help us every day.

It will brighten all the way

If we keep on the sunny side of life

Where are you girls going?

And what are you doing here?

Well, our aunt's tricked us

and left us to die on a beach.

And then a wolf attacked us.

Wolf attacked you?

Yeah, it just ran right up to us you.

Wolves don't run up to people,

and they won't attack

unless they're in the pack.

See, I told you.

Unless they were injured, or had rabies.

Rabies? Just like I said.

Well, let's pop some champagne

to celebrate your brilliance,

poor blood.

So, our luggage floated out to sea

and at which point a man who claimed

he's going to take us to our new house,

which turned out to be

a decaying boat house.

It became clear that

he'd been paid to k*ll us,

so we escaped by jumping off of a cliff,

and then Mattie hit him

in the head with a log.

And then we drove his

car over on top of him.

Wait wait wait, wait.

You drove his car onto him?

Well, not exactly drove.

More like it just rolled.

You k*lled a man with his own car.

We are not entirely certain he's dead.

Then how do you know

he was trying to k*ll you?

Are you sure?

Maybe you were wrong.

And you just crushed a man with his own car

who was just trying to give you a ride.

No. No, sir.

He was sh**ting at us before

his car went over the bank.

You took the brake off.

Yes, before he went over the bank

we absconded with his r*fle

and some b*ll*ts and then taught

ourselves how to sh**t birds.

Taught yourself how to sh**t?

I studied ballistics.

Oh, you studied ballistics.

And that somehow helped you sh**t a r*fle.

For crying out loud

It's me who can sh**t.

Mattie couldn't sh**t the Statue of Liberty

if it was falling on top of her.

You are the one that can sh**t?

Why are you repeating

everything we are saying?

What is important now is that we are...

here.

You are here.

You are indeed.

When I look at those

stitches on your dresses,

I knew you was from wealth.

What's your names?

- Tinsley Wilde.

- Mattie Wilde.

The only Wilde I know of is

that New York railroad tycoon.

He was our father.

Get out of here. Really?

- Yes, sir.

- Well. I'm Silas Colter.

What did he mean, a nature call?

It was his way of saying he

had to use the powder room.

Oh, he's very pushy and impolite.

Tinsley what are you doing?

I'm looking to see if he has a cigarette.

You really shouldn't be

snooping in his things.

Breath.

Tansley, you really shouldn't.

I thought I was going

to die with a cigarette.

Now for a match.

Oh.

Tinsley!

The break. That was the

break. You took the break off.

Oh! Oh!

Oh, that was so weird.

Oh, my God.

Isn't that blasphemy?

Tinsley.

Hey, where's my truck?

Maybe we can fix her.

Well, no, probably not now.

Lord, Jesus.

I'm so sorry.

No, no, I needed her.

That was close.

We are so lucky.

Oh!

Oh, I am, I am so sorry.

She didn't mean to.

You did it?

Yes. There was a cigarette.

She was looking for matches?

You?

But the matchbox had fallen

under the lever of the brake,

so I pulled it out of the way.

You took the brake off?

She did.

You took the brake off on

the other man's car as well?

Yes, but for an entirely different reason.

You blew up my truck

for a different reason.

It sounds silly when you say it.

This is not okay.

You know, that usually

makes me feel better.

It didn't make me feel better.

If I was your papa, I would...

You remember when I

said that you were lucky?

I take it back.

You are a disaster, a certified disaster.

I didn't get to smoke

the cigarette, if that helps.

How does that help?

I'm so angry.

You said.

And I'm going to say it a

whole lot more until I feel better.

And that may be never.

I don't think a 16 mile

walk is a long enough time.

We have to walk 16 miles?

Who said anything about we?

You said you'd take us to your cabin.

That was before you blew up my truck.

I'm thinking about leaving you here.

No, no, please let us come with you.

We will help you carry

whatever you retrieve.

I did not agree to that.

What if there's another bear?

Oh, I certainly hope so.

I didn't ask the good Lord to

send me a couple of daffy dames

who don't have the foggiest clue

how to take care of themselves.

You... are very... rude.

I'm rude?

I'm rude?

Yes.

Alright. Let me say that

a little differently, then.

You are not as worldly

as you think you are.

You know, there's a thousand

ways to die out here.

And if two vulnerable neophytes...

Neophyte.

Perhaps you don't

understand the meaning of the word.

I am not going to strike you, ever.

I don't hit women.

But if I were the type of man who did,

you would be the first on my list.

You do not need to further

demonstrate your lack of...

Tinsley!

You were going to say breeding?

Maybe.

Tinsley, out here we are neophytes.

Your sister gets it.

Cuz, not everyone might

have been as nice to you as me.

Now, when we get back to my cabin,

I'm gonna feed you, and I'm gonna

set you up with some supplies.

And then I expect you

to go on your way to...

Port Townsend.

Port Townsend. Right.

It's like 50 miles from here. Lord,

Lord, all these years,

I accepted your punishment.

Are you a criminal?

No, I'm not a criminal.

Tinsley, stop disrespecting Mr. Colter.

Do you really think we can

survive out here on our own?

Hard times, hard times

Come again no more

Many days you have lingered

Around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

I cannot do this.

I'm not a Sherpa or a...

Pack mule?

Yes. I am not a pack mule.

That's for sure.

Especially because I'm carrying the bag.

So, New York City,

what's it like these days?

You've been to New York?

Oh, I used to live there,

but that was a long time ago.

But there's lots of new wonders.

Like the Flatiron Building.

I heard it has a steel skeleton.

The Flatiron building?

What are you, a hundred years

old? That thing has been there forever.

Tinsley, the Flatiron Building

was erected in 1902.

There you go again with the

details nobody could care less about.

Well I left before then.

Why do you leave?

Private reasons.

What reasons?

Pri... vate reasons.

Hurry up, dear brother.

We need to k*ll these two Wilde

girls heiresses so we can go home.

There's a leak in the coolant

system. I don't think it's the radiator.

I think it's a gasket.

Can you fix it?

I can probably patch it.

Everything's probably with you.

It's not my fault. Gaskets fail.

Like you.

What are you trying to say, Helena?

I'm saying, Larry, that you

failed in getting us a car.

I told you to get the best one.

This one was cheaper.

The difference was the price of a pizza.

There's his car.

Just where the country hick

said he saw it. Is he down there?

Why don't you look and see?

Uuuh.

I'm just curious why someone would

consciously leave the center of

humanity to come to this hell hole.

God's country that he

thought up on a bad day.

God doesn't have bad days.

But why did you...

Private reasons.

There's no money out here.

There's more in life than money.

Well, you have been away

from New York for a long time.

What could possibly be

more valuable than money?

Time.

The span of our lives or the bank account?

Time is the currency.

Oh, hello. I'd like to buy this house.

And how will you be paying

for it? Oh, with a big bag of time.

That is just stupid.

Maybe we should just walk without talking.

Fine by me.

Fine.

I loved that truck. Never let me down.

I thought we were going

to walk without talking.

I don't like you.

That's what Mr. Button

said before he tried to k*ll us.

I'm beginning to like this, Mr. Button.

Clumsy idiot.

You've been extra mean

to me since we got out here.

You gummed up the works and

got us stranded in this wasteland.

It was one crummy bracelet.

How would I know that they

would know it was missing?

The job was to bump her off,

not steal from her.

Those diamonds in that

thing were worth a lot.

Yeah.

Our position with the organization.

Nobody's looking over our shoulder.

We have total freedom to do our own thing.

We're like Bonnie and Clyde.

You mean Bonnie and Clod?

You always think that you're so smart.

You were only born one

minute before me, you know?

Yeah. I got the brains

and you got the a*s end.

See if there's anything in the

car that might help us. Shake a leg.

Moron.

It is so isolated out here.

You must get lonely for company.

This is the way I like it.

And I don't like people.

That doesn't surprise me.

Never had someone blow up my truck before.

It's not really my fault about your truck.

I blame poor design... and gravity.

Excuse me, excuse me.

We give thanks for the squirrel stew.

We thank you for this food.

And give these last girls

strength, wisdom and endow them

with a divine spirit of skill,

ability, knowledge and grace.

And grant me much needed patience.

Amen.

Amen.

Why did your daddy take his own life?

Because he was a coward.

The truth was, we didn't

know the whole truth.

We only knew the shame.

The way the world stopped seeing a man once

he has nothing left to give it.

Our father was a man who

built his life on numbers,

only to watch them betray him.

And when the world told him

he was nothing without them,

he believed it.

Maybe that's the real tragedy.

Not that he left us,

but that he thought we'd

be better off without him.

There was this woman

that used to live around here.

She died.

These boots are hers.

Got to make sure there's no spiders.

We didn't used to pray

before eating when growing up.

No?

We hardly ever ate with our parents.

Unless... father wanted to show us off.

Father always gave us whatever we wanted.

Except for his time.

That's something.

sh**t.

Life is hard.

Is your father still alive?

My parents left this earth a long time ago.

Sometimes it feels like yesterday.

But mostly it feels like

a thousand years ago.

They'll mold to your feet all the time.

They feel secure.

Now. Don't take any rides

from strangers, you hear?

Yes, sir.

Do you think someone will try to harm us?

I think you will wind up

getting someone k*lled.

Just not a good idea.

I don't know how to thank you.

You can thank me by never, ever,

ever coming back to my door again.

Oh, and if you ever

somehow get your money back,

buy me a new truck.

If we could return... to the safety

Of our decorated child's rooms

We would find the world...

Safer... but miss our natural blooms

When we were little girls...

We thought we knew it all

And now

Our souls

Are pushed and pulled

and forced to grow

My apologies.

I should have shown you before

I started asking you questions.

Here's my badge.

I'm Detective Hogart.

You seem like you don't believe us.

Well, miss, Wilde, what you told me

is that your aunts sent you here...

Beatrice and Florence Wilde.

Yes. The world famous socialites,

Beatrice Wilde and Florence Wilde,

two of the richest women on the planet.

Who you say are your relatives.

They are our aunts.

Do you have any identification

that confirms that you are,

in fact, the Wilde heiresses?

Well, our proof was in our

purses, and our luggage.

And you said that your

luggage floated away to sea.

Yes.

And your purses...

Were eaten by raccoons.

That's right.

Your purses with the identification

were eaten by raccoons.

Purses are not usually

the normal diet for raccoons.

I think they were trying

to get to our lipstick.

It was soft pink.

Some would call it dusty

with a hint of creamy yellow.

Why would the raccoons

want to wear your lipstick?

They weren't trying to wear it, flatfoot.

They were trying to eat it.

But they eat your purses instead.

Yes.

And then a wolf attacked us.

A wolf.

That's very rare.

I know. That's what I was telling her.

Like other large carnivores,

wolves tend to fear people.

But it had rabies.

You were the one who said it had rabies.

Possibly.

So you were attacked by a

wolf that you think had rabies.

How did you determine

that this wolf had rabies?

Oh, well, because it attacked us.

And it climbed a tree.

Oh,

You were attacked by a

tree climbing wolf with rabies?

Yes.

I see.

So you're rich and famous aunts

sent you to Washington

State to be m*rder*d by a

hitman named button.

A button man.

A button man named

button was hired to k*ll you,

and he took you to live in

a house that was actually,

boathouse.

Yes.

And that's where he tried to k*ll you?

No, no, the boathouse was

falling down and unlivable.

So this k*ller tried to make

you live in an unlivable house,

and then he took you

somewhere else to k*ll you.

No, he was taking us

to a telephone after that.

And that's where he tried to k*ll you?

No, but we knew he was going to.

He had a r*fle.

He said he had a r*fle

because he saw a bear.

Well, we do have bears around here.

But you said that he

shot at you with a revolver.

Yes.

While he was taking you to a telephone.

No.

After we jumped out of his car.

You jumped out of his car?

Yes. It was moving.

And that's when he started sh**ting at you.

No. We got to his car

and we ran it over him.

Well, we weren't exactly driving.

How's that again?

Well, we pushed it on to

him off of the mountain.

Cliff. It was a cliff. She means cliff.

He was sh**ting at you

after you jumped out of his car,

and you ran him over with it

after you got out of it by

pushing it out onto him off of a cliff.

We think we k*lled him.

You think you k*lled him?

How do you not know if you k*lled him?

Because we ran away.

You ran away after you ran him over?

But you have a r*fle.

Why didn't you sh**t him with your r*fle?

Oh, this is his r*fle.

We took it for protection.

You stole his r*fle?

Yes. When you put it like that.

So you're confessing to m*rder?

Maybe we k*ll him.

Or, attempted m*rder

and the theft of a r*fle.

Well, it wasn't exactly theft.

We took it to protect ourselves.

And your aunt's are the Wilde family.

And you two of the famous

Wilde heiress sisters. Yes.

Yes.

Of course.

Can't you tell by our clothing?

To be honest,

the clothing that you're wearing

doesn't look like the kind of

clothing a wealthy heiress would wear.

Look at the fabric,

the fabric, the thread count.

Oh, that's blood.

Is it his blood?

Or bear blood?

Bear blood?

We k*lled a bear.

You k*lled a bear?

Stop repeating everything.

Yes, technically.

Okay. Maybe we k*lled a bear.

We shot at it and it fell on top of us.

But I think it was k*lled by the

knife that was stab into its throat.

Yep.

Huh.

Wait.

A bear fell on you.

But earlier, the man that

you think you may have k*lled,

he said he may have seen a bear.

And that's why he had the r*fle.

Yes, they are different bears.

Different bears?

This isn't actually blood.

It is mud.

Yes, poor blood, it is mud.

Okay, I'm covered in mud.

And the mud is from?

Everything. Everywhere.

Oh, this entire world is covered in mud.

Oh, my God, I've never

been to such a place.

So covered in mud and dirt.

And bugs. It's on the ground. It's...

Tinsley, the ground is made of dirt.

That's what ground is.

Well, we may not be as smart as

wealthy heiresses from New York.

Ma'am, with all due respect,

when you steal someone's r*fle...

For survival.

Even for survival, we call that theft.

And when you run over

a man with his own car,

even if you didn't k*ll him

well, we call that attempted m*rder.

But he was sh**ting at us.

I see.

And where did this happen?

In the woods.

In the woods?

There's lots of woods around here.

Can you be a bit more specific?

Yes, maybe 100 miles from here.

Just find his car and you'll find his body.

If we k*lled him.

If you k*lled him,

a hundred miles from here in

a patch of forest, on a mountain.

Do you know which mountain?

Mount Rainier, Mount Saint

Helens, Mount Olympus...

Oh, well,

it wasn't exactly on top of a mountain.

More like on the side of a mountain.

On a mountain side, but not

a mountain in a patch of forest

about 100 miles from here.

But you don't remember where.

You do realize pretty much this

whole region is covered in forest.

Call our aunts. They will vouch for us.

Your aunt who tried to k*ll you

will confirm they tried to k*ll you

If I call them?

Well, maybe.

Maybe not that part. Or maybe.

Maybe they won't even

confirm that they know us at all.

They did try to k*ll us after all.

Of course. That makes sense.

You are so frustrating.

Why don't you get this?

I am trying.

We are the Wilde Heiresses.

You can't tell by our breeding in the

weave of the fabric of our dresses?

Under the blood and the mud?

Yes.

The bears blood that fell on

you, but not the blood of the man

that you ran over?

Yes, yes.

Well, I'll have

my men look into this and

see what we can dig up.

In the meantime, where can I

reach you if I need more information?

We... we don't... exactly live anywhere.

You don't live anywhere?

Always with the repeating.

So you're homeless? Vagrants.

Vagrants?

Excuse me?

Yes, yes.

We don't have anywhere to live right now.

Nothing to be ashamed about.

There are a lot of people who

don't have a place to live right now.

And I've heard a lot of wild...

That's funny.

Wild...

stories.

Let me look into this first part

and see if there's a man dead

or bleeding to death under

his car within 100 mile vicinity.

I won't charge you for the r*fle,

as there's no complaint against you

even with your self confession.

But look.

Hey, I think you girls could use a break.

I have a couple tickets to the new

Charlie Chaplin movie opening tonight.

I think you could use them more than me.

Stick around after the show. The theater

holds a raffle for a bag of groceries.

Good luck to you.

Lookout Charlie!

We didn't win the bag of groceries.

A tired mother with too

many mouths to feed won it.

And for once, fate got something right.

Then Tinsley had an idea, a terrible idea.

Against my better judgment, I

agreed to let her drag me back

to the police station to use their

phone to call evil Aunt Beatrice

so we could beg, bargain,

and if necessary, blackmail

our way back to New York.

Because, as Tinsley put it,

civilization needs us.

And somehow, in that moment,

I almost believed her.

Thank you, officer. She's on the line.

Hello, aunt Beatrice.

Hello. Is this Mattie?

No. You know it's Tinsley.

Have you finally settled

into the new house?

There was a house?

No. You know there is no house.

You sent a Button man after us.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

All right,

you win.

But we... are Wildes.

We don't belong out here.

We'll live in the

gardener's cottage or the...

the servants quarters.

Just please let us return to civilization.

Don't be absurd.

Where would the gardener live?

And you can't stay in

the servants quarters.

Can you imagine what the society pages

would say if they thought I was making

my nieces live amongst the servants?

You have no idea what we've been through.

I can only imagine.

It must be Paradise.

Paradise?

We were attacked by a bear.

You have been drinking.

I didn't realize they served

liquor in the wilderness.

It is outright primitive.

I have stayed in the country many times.

It can't be that bad.

You mean the Hamptons?

This is not the Hamptons.

Perhaps you are right.

I should bring the two of you home.

I will send someone for you.

Someone to bring you home.

Where are you, dear?

Oh, we're in Port...

You'll send someone

like you sent Mr. Button.

Just tell me where you are.

I will take care of everything.

You mean take care of us?

Of course I will.

We Wildes know how to take care of family.

We'll take care of you.

Are you there, dear?

Tell me where you are.

Do you have an address?

Where I can send someone to meet you.

What did she say?

She just wanted to know where we were

so she could send someone else.

Oh... Yes.

We need to get back

to New York and find father's

will to expose our treacherous aunties.

Tinsley. New York

City's a long way off at this point.

First, we have to figure

out how to survive.

We've lost everything.

At least we still have

Each other?

Was going to say dirt.

Ha ha!

Hard times, hard times

Come again no more

Many days you have lingered

Around my cabin door

Oh, hard times, come again no more

What in God's

green Earth are you two

doing on my doorstep again?

It was a wild goose chase.

Our aunts are truly demons.

We will never see the return

of our stolen fortune again.

It is, quite clear now.

What in God's green Earth

are you two doing

on my doorstep again?

We came back to move in with you.

We want to live with

you as we have no home.

Oh, hell no.

No, no.

I built this as a wood shed

a number of years ago.

It's not pretty.

It needs some fixing up,

but you can live in it.

Now, this is the furthest

back corner of my land.

I'm gonna give you two acres

from that tree line

across the field over here.

Now, you're going to need

skills to live like how to trap, farm,

how to take care of animals.

And I guess I'll be the one

to volunteer to teach you.

Oh, oh, hey,

I appreciate you, Miss Mattie,

but I'm not really the hugging kind.

Why would you do this for us?

We haven't exactly been nice to you.

You haven't? Get out of here.

You're pretty much unkind

and rude to everyone,

so I don't specially take it personally.

And I can't stomach the thought of

you two being in my personal space

day in and day out, miss Tinsely.

Now, let's get started

fixing this place up.

Because tomorrow

I'm taking you with me trapping.

Y'all can stay in my cabin

till this place is livable.

Then this is where you sleep.

Understood.

I found some raisins and some

flour in the very back of your pantry.

I was thinking I'd make a raisin pie.

Have you ever made a raisin pie before?

I've never made any kind of pie before.

Now why would you want to go and do that?

I would not let my sister

near an open flame.

Amen.

Like Tinsley said,

this wasn't the Hamptons.

I can smell the morning dew.

You can smell the morning dew?

Why do you always say stupid things?

Ladies.

I smell wet dog.

Well, it's not me.

Ladies.

Breathe, now fire.

Giggles.

Oh, hey.

What are you girls doing?

Having a drink from the brook?

No, never drink directly from a stream.

Why not? We've been doing

this since we came out here.

I'll show you.

Never drink directly from

the stream or river or lake.

Even if the water looks

clean. You see this animal?

Where do you think its fluids are running?

Yeah.

Downstream

Where you were about to

take a big gulp of squirrel juice.

I think I'm going to be sick.

I told you you were lucky.

You got to clean the water first.

How do we clean it?

You boil it.

How do you boil it?

We don't have any matches.

Matches are expensive.

If they get wet or damp,

they just become useless.

I'm gonna teach you about flint.

Wow.

That's poison oak.

Stay away from that.

The one with the three leaf clusters?

Yep. It grows pretty much

everywhere around here.

Our souls

Are pushed and pulled

and forced to grow

I can't believe Silas

actually lives here on purpose

without even the faintest

hope of champagne.

I'm so bored.

There's nothing to do here.

I can teach you to sew.

Silas showed me. It's not that hard.

No, I don't want you

to teach me how to sew.

Then I'll have to do it all the time.

There are dozens of

chores that need to be done.

I don't want to learn how to sew.

I want to see if Silas

has any playing cards.

Stop!

It is impolite.

Impolite?

Do you hear the way Silas speaks to me?

Yes.

You blew up his truck.

You blow up one person's truck

and you never hear the end of it.

I don't have to be polite... to him.

He is letting us sleep

here while our walls dry.

He has kept us alive.

Tinsley.

Huh, what's this?

Tinsley, stop.

Silas doesn't want us

snooping in his things.

It's delicate.

Leave it alone.

I'm sure it was hidden for a reason.

Oh, it opens.

Give me some room.

Well, I wanted to see... if you

were going to open it after all.

Well, you're breathing on my shoulder.

Can you not do that?

I'm breathing like I always breathe.

I don't like it.

I don't like it. Can you stop?

Can I stop breathing?

No, just not in my direction.

I'm breathing away from you.

Huh, It's a woman.

She's beautiful.

There's an inscription.

It says Maisy, I shot us dinner.

I shot us dinner.

Who's Maisy?

Give me that.

Where'd you get this?

Don't you ever touch this again.

Ever.

But who's Maisy?

These girls are going

to make me lose my religion.

We're sorry about the locket last night.

She means it.

Don't. Just don't.

Eggs.

I have not had an omelet in so long.

It's going to be even longer

because we don't have

an omlette pan out here.

Heh, we're going to eat

these a different way.

Oh. No.

Ew... eew.

Now, this one's still alive, which

means it hasn't gone bad yet.

We can eat it raw.

No, no, you're. You're kidding, right?

I am not.

Oh. Oh.

Gag.

Gasp.

Oh, I cannot. I can't, bring myself to.

Nope. Not going to happen.

Good.

I save it for you later.

You get hungry enough

this'll look like an omelette to you.

When we were little girls...

We thought we knew it all

But now

Our souls

Are pushed and pulled

and forced to grow

Time passed with a steady rhythm

as Silas wove his strange

and quiet lessons into our days.

How to snare a rabbit,

how to fish from the stream.

How to tend the land so it

would care for us in return.

Knowledge came like the slow

seep of dawn, quiet and unasked.

And we let it come.

When we were little girls...

We thought we knew it all

But now

Our souls

Are pushed and pulled

and forced to grow

Now, under these logs,

these little squirmy

fellows are called grubs.

They're maggots.

Maggots are baby flies.

You don't want to eat

them. You can help it.

These grubs grow into beetles.

A good source of all kinds of nutrients.

These beetle larve are fat and juicy.

I think I'm going to be sick.

What do they taste like?

A little bit like chicken... with a,

Almond aftertaste.

This does not taste like chicken at all.

Now, would you have eaten it

if I told you it tastes like goat cheese?

I like goat cheese.

Now that's funny.

That's one thing I never took a liking to,

was goat cheese.

I would eat a hundred plates of grubs

before I'd eat goat cheese.

I would much rather starve than eat grubs.

You don't come back from

the dead, Miss Tinsley.

Father always said...

Oh, if I have to hear what

father said one more time...

And just...

Maybe it's an acquired taste.

Yeah, ha ha.

But remember, these'll keep you alive.

I think I'll ever get that

taste out of my mouth.

I actually taste the almond.

Such dreams when I was a lad.

If only I knew one day I would

be living off of squirrel.

Wait, what is this?!

Ticks?

Oh, bloody hell!

When I find these two dames,

I'm so going to t*rture them.

Especially the arrogant one.

Nice kitty.

First stack is around

the back side of the barn

by the lean to.

Got it.

Why are you so mad at you, daddy?

He must have really been

suffering to do what he did.

When I was a little girl,

I had training wheels on my bicycle.

My au pair, was attempting

to convince me to have the training

wheels removed from my bicycle.

I would have none of it.

My father saw us out of his study

window and came down with his tools.

Said it was time to

remove my training wheels.

He said he'd hold on and run alongside me.

I said, you'll let go and I will fall.

He said, I won't let go.

I reluctantly agreed and

we... started pedaling.

He kept encouraging me to go faster.

And suddenly I looked back

and he was standing there,

a big grin on his face.

He let go.

He promised he wouldn't let go, but he did.

Just like when he shot himself.

When I was a little boy...

my daddy couldn't find any work.

No matter how hard he tried.

The deck was just stacked against him.

So my mother, who got work as a

cleaning woman, had to support us.

And he had stay home to raise me.

Oh, I, despised him growing up.

I didn't think he was a real man.

Years later I realized

how hard it was for him.

How much it must'a ate at his soul inside.

But he was a good father,

and he did everything he could

to make sure I was all right.

Now, my father's forever my hero.

My father took everything.

It isn't fair.

Out of all the people in this world I met,

you should know that life isn't fair.

It's not fair now and never will be.

Today. Life's not fair to you.

Tomorrow It'll be unfair to someone else.

It's only to love the good

Lord gave us the ability to feel

that makes it all bearable.

Then our aunts took everything else.

Though I'm sure that's not

what their intentions were...

but one day you will see

what they did was a gift.

Now they can slow you down.

But if you're strong,

they can't make you walk backwards.

They took our future.

Nobody can take your future.

Now, I can't say...

that you ever see the kinds

of money you once had.

I don't... I don't even

reckon it's even likely.

But remember this.

It's never too late to be

what you might have been.

Father used to say that.

Sound like he loved you.

He left us.

He promised he wouldn't leave us.

And he did.

You will eventually leave

Mattie and I out here alone.

I will not.

What you looking at me like that for?

I'm trying to see if I can tell

if you're lying or telling the truth.

What do you figure?

I think... think maybe you mean it.

Here comes your sister.

It's your turn to haul wood.

Look down your site.

See the tab at the end?

All right, line it up with your prey.

Now... squeeze off. Do it.

All right.

Yes.

Yes.

It is a peculiar truth

that one rarely recognizes one's

own education while it is happening.

We had arrived as creatures of luxury.

But under Silas's watchful eye,

something within us was shifting,

being shaped by the

quiet demands of survival.

We were not merely learning.

We were becoming something else.

And Silas, with his shadowed

past and knowing eyes,

remained a mystery.

He didn't explain why he was

helping us, and we didn't ask...

because honestly, we weren't

ready for the answer.

Everyone leaves me,

like my assistant Reginald T. Fluffington.

One moment he was brushing

my hair 100 strokes before bed,

and the next, poof, he's gone.

Technically, Fluffington

jumped off the balcony

of the Waldorf Astoria.

The point is, I am clearly cursed.

I will never find a husband out here.

I guess we are both going to be old maids.

For you, it's a foregone conclusion.

What? You never had

a boy interested in you.

But, for me it is an additional punishment.

Leave it alone. You don't know everything.

It seems I hit a rare nerve.

You mean a raw nerve?

Yes. One of those.

You know, things

happen in the world that

aren't always about you.

Poor blood, are you saying

you had a boyfriend?

I met a boy at the 42nd Street library.

Really? Who?

You don't want to know.

Yes, I do, tell me.

His name was Shane Barlow.

He and I were both

interested in medieval history.

More specifically the migration period.

You know, the period sometimes

referred to as the Dark Ages

or the early Middle Ages.

You know, the period from the

fall of Rome to about the year

1000, of course, with a brief

hiatus during the flowering

of the Carolingian court, which

was established by Charlemagne.

Oh, yes.

Yes, you're both interested in the falling

of the Romans for a thousand years

of the brief hibiscus and the flowering

of the calamari court with jesters.

It was estimated in champagne.

You realize you just said nonsense.

Oh, I said nonsense.

What does this have to

do with the boy you met?

Was this a...

a real boy or a, a "boyfriend",

you know, like your little elf

friend when you were younger.

He was real.

Okay, he was... sweet.

We understood each other.

So there was someone who understood you?

What?

Shut up.

We were happy when we were together.

What, were you in love?

Yes.

What?

You're always so dismissive of me.

You never see me for who I am.

That someone other than

yourself could have feelings.

What happened?

He wanted to marry me.

What?

He wasn't of our class.

Father wouldn't allow it.

What happened?

Father was

furious that I was associating

with a boy from a lower class.

He was from a lesser known family?

He was poor.

Virtually penniless.

We met in secret.

But, our world was doomed from the start.

We could never be.

Father hired spies to follow us.

We were clever at avoiding them.

We started meeting at the the

Renaissance rooms at the

Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Oh, yeah, the Renaissance rooms.

They'd never think to look for

you two certifiable freaks there.

Yeah, well, they caught us.

Surprise.

Hm. That, that's when...

father sent me to

England to break us apart.

That's when you went to Oxford.

Yes.

We corresponded in secret.

He decided to visit me.

And I tried to wire him money for the trip,

but he insisted on paying its own way.

Did you meet?

He caught pneumonia on

the journey and died at sea.

I never saw him again.

I, I didn't know.

Yeah, well, there's a lot

of things you didn't know.

All this time I was calling

you the old maid. But...

but you knew true love,

John Astor dropped me the

moment we lost our money.

My worth to him was

equivalent to our wealth.

That wasn't love.

But you.

You knew true love.

Can we just stop talking now?

Poor blood?

Yes, sister.

Why didn't you tell me before?

I was trying to protect you as always.

You had enough to deal with.

Oh.

One day, Silas announced

he was off to Port Townsend

on some mysterious business

which, as we all know, is code for

I don't want to explain

myself to two nosey heiresses.

Naturally, this meant we had

to press him for details.

But the man was a fortress.

A locked box. Like a

man about to do something

either incredibly noble or highly ill*gal.

Fine, whatever.

But a man of mystery,

haunted by ghosts in his past

doesn't just take day trips for fun.

If you still want to

make Silas a Raisin pie,

I found a recipe on a

newspaper pasted to our wall.

How long have you been hiding

bad things from me to protect me?

Forever, sister.

Maybe you can stop now.

Really? You think you're ready?

I don't know, but I know things

aren't the way I thought they were.

Yes, it is right on the

other side of the East Side...

Good afternoon ladies.

Have you seen a couple of... you!

Tnsley, stop breathing

so loud. He can hear us.

You're breathing just as loud.

Shhhh.

Stop yelling.

Oh my god, you're yelling too.

You were yelling louder, as always.

Oh my God, that is not true at all.

If someone was here, they would say that

you were the one who was yelling louder.

No Tinsley, I think that they would say

that you were the one who was yelling.

No, they would not know.

They definitely would not.

No, but fath...

Oh, you stepped on me.

Well, I didn't mean too, I can't.

Peekaboo!

Get up.

I see you. Just get up.

Come on, get up, get up.

Get up.

Get up, get up.

You... two dames...

have seriously messed up my day.

I'm hungry.

I haven't had lunch.

I need to eat lunch.

You know what? I was going to t*rture you.

But I'm going to make this real quick.

Oh hey!

Oh my god, Tinsley! sh**t

him! sh**t him! sh**t him!

Tinsley, sh**t him!

He doesn't have it. sh**t him.

Oh gosh!

sh**t him!

Oh, this is not like

sh**ting a bird at all!

No, it is not like sh**ting a bird.

I is like sh**ting a man

who is trying to k*ll us.

Why can't Spain make a decent g*n?

Just sh**t him.

I'm going to k*ll you.

I can't do it.

I can't do it. I can't do it!

Okay give me the g*n!

What?!

Hold on. A few seconds.

Oh, I can't do it either.

Yes you can. I know you can.

I believe in you.

Oh.

I shot him.

In the eye.

In the eye.

Oh, it's heavy.

Much heavier than I would have imagined.

His name really is Button.

It says here he is from East

London. It's a tough place.

I wonder if this is the type of

g*n father k*lled himself with.

Give me the g*n.

Well, now you've done it.

You've gone and shot Rosie.

Are you happy now? Now,

we have to eat her for dinner.

- Give me the g*n.

- Why should I? That was the last b*llet.

Because you obviously do

not know how to handle it.

And now we have to eat our

favorite chicken for dinner.

Give me the g*n.

I will hold on to it until Silas gets back.

Hold on to what?

Silas! Oh.

You have no idea what happened.

Yes I do, you accidentally

shot your pet chicken...

He was here when he came

back. He he wasn't dead.

Who?

- Mr. button.

- The button man.

The fellow who tried to k*ll you?

Yes.

Mattie k*lled him.

You k*lled him.

Yes, I shot him in the eye.

- Not Tinsley.

- I froze.

I'll be damned.

Looks like he's winking at me.

Tinsley and I had been raised

with everything we could ever want,

except the things we really needed.

A silver spoon can feed a

child, but it cannot nourish her.

Aunt Beatrice and Florence

had learned the same lessons.

And our grandparents had too.

All of us passing down the same

mistakes like a family heirloom.

But I suppose if you go too far in the

wrong direction, there's no way back.

Beatrice and Florence would

always be searching for more,

not realizing what they needed had

never been for sale in the first place.

Must you knit so loudly?

The incessant clacking of the

needles is getting on my nerves.

I didn't realize they were

making any noise at all.

Well they are. So knit more quietly...

Or I shall have to forbid this

peasant activity that you have adopted.

It calms me.

What could possibly cause you any stress

from which you would need calming?

Hello.

Miss Wilde, I need to

speak with your sister.

- It's Mr. Cantilever.

- Yes, Mr. cantilever, what is it?

I didn't arrange a call with you.

Mr. Cantilever shouldn't call us.

We call him.

Shush.

- Miss. Wilde...

- I'm going to be quiet now.

It's a matter of utmost urgency.

I'm sorry to disturb you, but I

have some important news for you.

Get to the point.

The girl's mother has been located.

What?

'M sorry. It just flew out of my hand.

How dare you?

That tea set is

part of one of the finest Meissen

porcelain collections in the world.

Very expensive.

Though I know this is

frowned upon these days,

I would take you out to the stables

and strangle the life out of you.

I'm certain you would do it... if it

wasn't, as you said, frowned upon.

What do you mean she's been located?

I specifically told you

not to pursue the matter.

I did not. It was the agent of a creditor.

And there's more news, too

I'm afraid... The will has been located.

It is not possible that

you have found the will.

This isn't good.

- How could they have?

- Florence.

I can arrange to have a telegraphed

transcript sent to you so

we can have the details.

Now you listen here, Mr. Cantilever.

You are not to follow

up on this in any way.

Do you understand me, you pettifogger?

Yes, ma'am.

Dial my fixing associates.

They said they'll pay us

double to k*ll these girls.

You need to stop trying to be the man.

I stole us this car.

So put a sock in it.

I found a round about

way to heaven, heaven

Dagnabbit!

Engine running yet?

This is not my fault.

- It's all your fault.

- You picked this car.

You made the original mistake

that set us on the road to hell.

And everything that's happened since then

and continues to happen is your fault.

You know, I'm tired of you acting

like you're the only one in charge.

I am in charge.

They give the jobs to me,

and you help screw them up.

If it wasn't for you,

I would be the one in charge.

It's not natural. Men

and women are different.

I should be the breadwinner.

Then you should have finished school.

When mama died, I dropped out and

went to work so you could finish school.

That's the way it's supposed to be.

Women have a place.

It wasn't for me.

I wanted to go to college.

Women shouldn't go to college.

They have special abilities,

like intuitions.

You're unhappy because you

are going against woman's nature.

To raise a family, keep a

clean house and make dinner.

That's not what I'm good at.

Oh, yeah?

What are you good at?

k*lling.

You are a psycho.

You just figured this out?

You could have shot me in the head.

If I wanted to sh**t you in the head, I

would have aimed two inches lower.

Did you girls feed the chickens?

Yes, sir. We did.

Silas, I've been thinking.

You saved Mattie and I.

Had you not come along

we would have been

torn to shreds by a bear.

And if we had survived,

we would have most assuredly died

suffering a thousand different ways.

You saved us.

I take that back that

I said, I don't like you.

Are you saying you like me?

I'm just saying I don't dislike

you as much as I have done.

I'll take it.

I got to fix the shed roof.

It's going to be some bad weather coming.

You girls get your chores done.

No, I cannot perform

this sentimental hug.

It was a joke.

You shot at me.

Don't be a baby. I

shot at your hat already.

I can't believe you did that.

Are you going to fix the car?

- I mean, you're the man.

- It needs a mechanic.

Oh, how hard can it be?

How did you do that?

I'm smarter than you.

Oh, yeah? Well, you missed one thing.

What's that?

I'm a psycho too.

You're a devil. You

look so bashful and kind

But you only use your looks as an alibi

So how can you look so good?

And still be so doggone bad? Holy mamma

Still be so doggone bad

- Hello there.

What do you want?

I'm special Agent Larry

Hammer from New York City.

I've been out here on the West

Coast tracking Gabriel Button.

He's a very bad man.

You don't have to tell us.

He just tried to k*ll us.

And you are?

Tinsley...

Would you mind showing me your badge?

Of course.

Just a moment.

I've got it here.

I was following him. But I

lost track of him yesterday.

Oh. He's dead. Mattie shot him.

Shot him in the eye.

In the eye, huh?

Oh, yeah.

Here it is.

Oh, good.

We thought you might be

another bad guy like Mr. Button.

I am Tinsley Wilde, and

this is my sister Mattie.

Oh, Tinsley, I wish you hadn't.

Why not?

His badge.

It's a game warden's badge.

Good eye.

I seen a few... and G-Men badges, too.

What?

What??

So you are another Button man.

Your aunt's really didn't

want you to survive.

So they sent two of you.

Why hire one button man if you

can get two for twice the price?

Three? If you count my dead sister.

I'm going to need you to step

away from the girls, Mister...

You can call me Silas.

Silas Colter.

There's a Silas Colter company in New York.

Some kind of investment firm.

Pretty big. Survived the crash.

Yeah, I heard of it.

Either way, I'm not

leaving without them girls.

I guess you won't be leaving.

What's it to you? These

girls don't even belong.

They're from a different

world than you are.

Your kind does not want to be caught

with a couple of white girls around here.

The locals might think

you're doing something bad.

Not as bad as that haircut.

Just give me the girls.

Mattie, how tall would

you say this chump is?

I would say he's about six feet tall.

I was thinking more like five eleven.

What are you two talking about?

I got some wood cut up.

An' I was trying to figure out if

it was long enough for a coffin.

But I think about it.

I don't want to waste the wood.

You're a funny guy for a darkie.

I don't know if I should

be offended by that.

Mattie.

Where's that term "darkie" come from?

It is from Middle English,

derk. Later dark, from Old English deorc.

Meaning without light,

lacking light or brightness.

Especially at night.

But should I be offended?

It's colloquial...

for an African-American person,

as its underlying meaning is gloomy,

figuratively sad, cheerless,

sinister, wicked.

I would say you should be offended. Yes.

Now you done gone and offended me.

Do you know how many men I've k*lled?

I bet none was face to face.

Nor did you k*ll a bear with a knife.

Silas! You're shot! Oh!

Yeah, I know.

I need to have a talk with

those aunties of yours.

Then the bear wiped

his butt with the rabbit.

And then what happened?

Tinsley, that was the punch line.

There's no punch line after the punch line.

Well, maybe you can explain

it to me so I can understand.

And then I will laugh too.

If I have to explain it

you're not going to laugh.

Don't waste it.

It's not wasting it if it

keeps you from dying.

It's... it's a bit infected.

At least we got the b*llet out.

Cauterizing was good, but you

really need a couple of stitches.

Silas, you have done so much for us.

Tomorrow I will bake you that raisin pie.

I don't think my teeth can take it.

It will be edible, I promise.

All right. I'm a hold you to that.

I could use a pie.

All right.

I won't let you down, Silas.

Silas is tired.

We're all tired. Let's go back.

All right, sister.

What did you say?

I called you sis...

I heard you.

You called me sister.

Don't let it go to your head.

You're still poor blood.

Aww.

No. Stop it! Stop!

I hate your maudlin sentiment.

Stop it!

No. Thank you.

There's hope for you yet, young lady.

Stop it, both of you.

I don't want your... sympathy,

or... whatever this is.

Good night. Silas.

Good night, Miss Mattie.

- Good night, Miss Tinsley.

- Okay.

Good night. Silas.

I am glad I've come to know you.

Sometimes, the one you're helping

will lift you while you're lifting them.

What?!

Nothin'. Just a thought.

Go on and get home.

I made you that pie.

It's my second one.

Actually, I had trouble

with the consistency.

What're you still do

it in your wet clothes?

You'll catch you death of cold?

No.

No no.

No no no no no no no no.

Sniffles.

No no no no oh.

No we... we can fix it. Mattie can fix it.

No, you promised. You promised.

I'm okay.

No no no no. Please.

Promised.

Oh no.

He's sleeping now.

He's not sleeping. He's dead.

He left this just like father.

Tinsley.

He didn't mean to.

Life can be hard enough to break a person.

And father was broken.

And Silas.

God took him.

How do you not hate me, Mattie.

What makes you think I don't hate you?

I never got to tell Silas I loved him.

Yes, you did.

Of quiet birds in circling flight

I am the day transcending night

Do not stand...

By my grave and weep

I'm not there...

I do not sleep

Do not stand... by my grave and cry

I'm not there...

I did not die

Tinsley.

The ground is too solid.

We will never be able

to do this by ourselves.

We have to store him away

until we can get more help.

Store him like he's an old Victrola.

Like he's...

like he's nothing?

Tinsley.

No, no, that's not what I meant.

We are not strong enough.

We can't do this by ourselves.

I'm not stopping until

this grave is six feet deep.

I am the thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glints in snow

I am the sunlight on the grain

I am the gentle, autumn rain

Tinsley. Wake up.

I found a coffin Silas made.

How did I get here?

You fell asleep digging.

I helped you to bed about midnight.

You need to eat. We need to get strong.

Let me make us some

breakfast so we have strength.

You eat.

Do not stand...

By my grave and weep

I'm not there...

I do not sleep

Do not stand... by my grave and cry

I'm not there..

I did not die

Ohhhhh

Ohhhhh

I am the thousand winds that blow

I am the diamond glints in snow

I am the sunlight on the grain

Goodbye, Silas.

Do not stand... by my grave and cry

I'm not there...

I did not die

In the passage of time,

we found ourselves altered.

Not by grand revelation,

but by small, steady acts...

of tending to the stubborn earth with

hands that once held only idle luxury.

Silas had moved through

the wild not as a master of it,

but as a man who was part of it.

And from him we learned

some peculiar and lasting truths.

That power was not in the clink of coins,

but in the quiet certainty that one's

own hands could shape survival,

and most importantly,

how to care for each other.

Who's the tin can tourist?

Maybe it's good news.

I have a bad feeling.

Hello, the house.

Who are you?

I... work for C.C. Cantilever.

The lawyer who helped our

aunt steal our father's will?

Unfortunately, ma'am, as I understand,

your father's will was never discovered.

So what are you doing here?

I was not sent here by your aunt's.

Wait, what now?

I was engaged to deliver an envelope.

What is it pertaining to?

I'm not familiar with its content.

You don't know much for someone

being sent across the continent.

No, ma'am. It's from a Mr. Silas Colter.

Dear Tinsley and Mattie, if you are

reading this, it means that I am dead.

It turns out, I am rich.

The money I made from my days

of trapping turned out to be lucrative.

Over the years, I invested it

in infrastructure, railroads, automobiles

which survived the

stock market crash of '29.

My estate is worth

approximately $8 million.

I have bequeathed to you its total assets.

I believe you will spend it wisely.

We have money again.

Thank you, Tinsley.

And thank you, Mattie, for

becoming my adopted daughters.

The future is unknown,

but I know you'll make the best of it.

It turned out it was Silas...

Yours respectfully...

Silas Colter.

...who spent from his own resources

to recover what was lawfully ours,

to uncover the truth of our father's will,

and the fate of our mother.

So what are you going to spend it on?

His journeys to Port

Townsend, shrouded in mystery,

were not for himself, but for us.

And yet, even with this knowledge,

he remained as ever an enigma,

one of those rare men whose

actions speak louder than their words.

He was forever in our hearts.

But Tinsley and I did

not understand him fully.

I doubted anyone ever truly could.

Hi!

There's room for one more.

Ha.

I got a shipment of

books in. I'm going to need

some of your older students

to help me carry them.

I heard from the county.

Oh.

They are not going to shut us down.

For once...

our luck has rubbed off on those around us.

Silas would be proud.

He's looking down on us, smiling.

Amen to that, sister.

I like it, it's elegant, underplayed,

though we might have gone with

something a bit more grandiose.

A giant statue of Silas. Bronze, perhaps.

Nothing says humility

and compassion like a scary statue

of Silas glaring down at children

as they enter the school grounds.

I'm just saying, sister.

Three new schools opening by next year.

It deserves some recognition.

I recognize you, sister.

And if you say I don't count,

I'm going to sock you.

I wasn't going to say that.

I would like to thank you for coming

to my office on such short notice.

Why have you called us here?

What is this all about?

Louise.

We thought you were dead.

No such luck, my dear sisters.

I was in Brazil when I got

the word of Cornelius' death.

I've corresponded with my daughters.

You, they...

Beatrice sent them

to Washington State?

I wanted nothing to do with it.

You! You, Benedict Arnold.

Don't worry. They're in good health.

We don't have to answer to you.

Actually, you do.

The Wilde estate and all their

assets belong to Louise now.

Cornelius was meticulous.

He mailed me a copy of his

will, splitting the properties

between me and my daughters.

But they have decided,

for reasons of their own,

to remain in the wilderness.

You are officially broke.

I will have you disbarred.

I will see to it that you are

stripped of your legal profession.

You will never practice law in this

state or any place on Earth again.

There are worse things.

What is going to happen to us?

Don't worry, dears,

I will take care of you.

We Wildes know how to take

care of family, don't we?

Once I lived a life of a millionaire

Spending my money I didn't care

Then I began to fall so low

I didn't have a friend

And no place to go

But if I ever get my

hands on a dollar again

I'm gonna hold on to it

Nobody knows you

When you're down and out

Nobody knows you

When you're down and out

I mean when you down and out

When you down and out

Nobody knows you

When you down and out

I mean when you down and out

Hmm-mm-mmm...

You were the one

Who was there for me

You were the one

Who cared for me

I want to say things I cannot say

My voice is hah-low

at the end of the day

It happened too soon.

You left with the breeze

The cold broke me

And my heart with a freeze

You were my father

More than my father had ever been

And I know I will never see

you once and forever again

I loved you like the father I never had

You kept me floating

on my fragile lily pad

My shoulders are heavy

with love that you gave

My soul has awakened.

My heart you did save

You grew me and taught me,

Knew I was a fawn

You gave up so much,

till your last breath was drawn

Oh dear Silas

I've seen how my end will arrive

You showed me how

to be brave all the time

Knowing I won't get out alive

You were my father

More than my father had ever been

And I know I will never

See you once and forever again

I loved you like the father I never had

You kept me floating

On my fragile lily pad

Loved you like the father I never had

You kept me floating

On my fragile lily pad
