personally, it's not enough.

Olivia and Ally, I'm sorry.

You cannot tell me
you didn't have enough time,

it was too hard...

I don't care.

I want that energy. I want that drive.
I want that passion.

I want that fashion.

They can send home anyone, at any moment.

Wow, I can't believe this has happened.

I mean, I think we're all shocked.

I really did not see
a double elimination coming.

I just didn't see it.

So, the stress feels higher than usual.

How are you all feeling?

- Ready.
- Good, you guys better be ready,

because your next assignment,
we want you to go big.

Really big.

And you will do that while working with

one of the most iconic fashion brands
in fashion history.

That brand...

is Levi's.

Oh, my God, this is huge.

I have to win this.

So, with denim
at the heart of your designs,

we want you to create
a two-look collection.

One of your designs should be
a high-fashion, avant-garde look...

Wow.

...and your second look should be
an accessible version

inspired by that show-stopper.

Avant-garde, to me, is about expressing
your creativity.

Time to really go wild
and just try new things

and just push the envelope.
and get out of your comfort zone.

Make it big. Surprise us.
Show us what you can do.

This is not going to be a selling look,
so you can go for it.

I haven't necessarily created
any avant-garde looks,

so, I'm just excited to kind of show
I can create crazy fashion

that doesn't mimic bridal wear.

Innovation is really key here.

Think about it.

Levi's created
the first American blue jean,

an unheard-of concept at the time,
150 years ago,

and it's stood the test of time
and become a global fashion staple.

Your avant-garde look should push
all the boundaries of creativity

and individuality,

inspiring your accessible look
to be a fresh take on denim.

You are co-branding with Levi's.

Your fashion show is going to be

an over-the-top,
carnival-themed fashion show.

Even more of a reason to really push
your creative boundaries.

- You guys are all like, "Uh-huh..."

I'm super excited about this one.

Hi, Tim.

Designers, I am very excited
to introduce you to Karyn Hillman.

- Karyn is Levi's chief product officer.
- [all] Hi.

Originality and self-expression
are really important to us,

and that's why we love working
with emerging designers like yourselves.

This is a really important
assignment for me,

because I've always dreamed
of working with Levi's.

You know,
it's like you could just interpret

so many things in denim, and I have.

I really need to not get mired down
in negative thoughts.

We have a great range of denim fabrics

and Levi's sundries and trims
for everybody to work with.

At the core of your avant-garde look
should be denim, of course,

but you can also incorporate
other textiles.

And when you co-brand
with such a huge company,

you need to keep
their brand esthetic in mind,

and how well you do that
will be considered in the judging.

We're always looking to strike
that perfect balance

of our authentic roots paired with
the energy and innovation of today.

Yes. You can be inspired
by our surroundings here,

or you can go to downtown Los Angeles,

which has an abundance
of innovation and inspiration.

Now, you have two days
for this assignment.

Your seamstress pickup will be
tonight at midnight.

with the judges.

Look at all the props.

- Oh, my God.
- [Raf] This is like being a kid again.

We are at the field where
the carnival runway is being set up.

[Andrea] I love it!

Wow. Popcorn machine!

My God, I love the wheel.

- You must be really good at hula hoop.
- Oh, yeah.

Whoo! [laughs]

I don't think I've been to a carnival
since I've been a little kid.

[shutter clicks]

[Andrea] I see a lot of props.

[shutter clicks]

Colorful...

I feel super inspired.

I'm designing a military denim jacket.

For my avant-garde, I'm seeing
this black and white platform.

It has, like, some triangles opposite way,
and it has white dots.

I want to do it, like, light blue,
bleach on it, like, some white spots,

and then put it a lot of studs
and silver accessories.

Kind of denim piece that you can
leave it in your wardrobe forever.

I haven't seen a military jacket
from Levi's, so...

I'm super excited to create it.

[♪ Extreme Music: "Here We Go"]

- [Joshua] Now we're running.

Lucie is the winner! Yeah!

There's nowhere I'm running, man.

Avant-garde for me,

it's not the past, it's not the present,

it's something innovative.

I am getting inspiration
here in this place.

Something with "modern art"

architecture like this.

I feel like it's cool.

For me, avant-garde
is about going against the grain,

but it's also an attitude.

And I think that sits in with my brand.

Love Here is about making people
feel confident, and it's a lifestyle.

I was thinking, you know, during the '90s

everybody wore the Levi's iconic jacket
when I was at school,

and I feel like mixing
with this modern art here.

So, the avant-garde look.

So it's very like, the
oversized denim jacket.

But with some conceptual pockets.

I don't think we need like,
something like, very like, crazy.

You know, to be like avant-garde
or something.

Sometimes, it's something

like simple, pure.

You know, I'm looking at the props,
and I'm just thinking,

"What would make a great print?"

But also, what I'm looking for is shape.

Avant-garde, so I was thinking
about volume, carnies, and evil clowns.

[shutter clicks]

I really wanted to do some great prints
from these images I've taken today.

This Ferris wheel
has a lot of white caging.

We are supposed to go wild and crazy,
because it's avant-garde,

so, I think I want to do, like,
part of my garment as, like, a cage.

I just want it to be big and fun,

and I really just want to spend time
with the fabric

and just let myself be very organic
and let the fabric speak to me.

I'm gonna use tulle again
for my avant-garde look,

but the rest is gonna be all denim,

in three different colors--
white, this one, and the dark blue.

I have always had this dream
of doing this cocoon coat

with Levi's and doing
this denim version of it.

The cocoon jacket
can be worn upside-down,

'cause it's a one-size-fits-all garment,
so, it's like the perfect thing.

So, I want to play on that,
but for the avant-garde cocoon coat,

I'm going to do a long, black one,
with these screening inserts,

kind of play on quilts.

I want to win really bad,
so I don't want to screw it up.

But, also, I want to take some risks.

I just saw this reflection,

the sun reflecting off
this stainless steel building,

and it reminded me of tie-dye bleaching,

but also what came to my mind was
the Notting Hill Carnival.

It's a street festival. It's amazing.

It celebrates Caribbean life.

I kind of wanted to draw on that
as an inspiration,

but also, my time in London, you know,
back in the '90s when I was there,

you know, the first time I saw punks.

So, I want to merge
those two worlds together.

And I want to use color,
so, there's a vibrant red in there,

and then some blues.

It's a challenge, this one.

I don't want to be too sort of, like,
costumey, you know, too studenty.

I'm working on the accessible look.

Color shirt, kind of jacket with denim,
full of studs, and it's like bleached.

Trying to cut everything super fast,
so I can start doing tech pack.

I have to do a lot of instructions.

To be here, I'm sacrificing time
to be with my husband, my family,

but I'm learning as a person,

I'm growing up as a designer.

I'm sacrificing, but for something good.

What I love about
sitting quietly by yourself

is that you instantly get flashbacks

from, like, your childhood.

So, I am designing a bubble jacket.

I used to wear bubble jackets everywhere.

My bubble jacket is going to have
a built-in bookbag,

because no matter where we went,
my mom always carried snacks.

So, I'm creating, like, a utility detail.

That's for my avant-garde.

So, I just think this is pretty cool.

Ay, ay, ay.

Well, I just don't have any Photoshop
skills, and I'm really trying to learn,

and I'm trying to process this.

So, I'm just really frustrated
with the technology.

So, it's very dramatic.

[laughs]

I can't seem to calm down.

But I'm getting it.

[♪ vocalist singing dance music]

I plan on using some denim
with elasticity,

because that works the best
when you are working with curvy women.

You want to have a little stretch
in the fabric.

[Joshua] That's cool.

I like it.

So, my accessible look is a raglan coat,

something that reflects my tailoring,

and then my avant-garde
one is the overcoat.

It's kind of like
a frilly neck lizard sort of detail

coming all the way around the back.

Levi's takes me way back to the '90s.

You know, I moved to Italy,
I used to wear loose-cut pants.

And then my auntie says, "Josh," says,
"You can't wear that here in Italy."'

And I was like, "What do you mean?
That's what we wear in Australia."

She's like, "No, no, no."

So, she pulls out a Vogue magazine,
goes, flips through it.

One of these editorials
was a Levi's 501s.

The next day, I went
and bought a pair of 501s,

and I put them on,
and I think from that moment,

I kind of looked at fashion
in a different way.

So, you know, going from my auntie,
you know, telling me how to dress,

to now actually be able to
potentially work for Levi's

and doing something for them,
I mean, this is a great opportunity.

My accessible look is a pair of pants

and a vest.

So, for avant-garde look,
I want to use the caging idea

and treat it like a sculpture.

I'm here to push myself,
so either it's gonna work out,

or it's gonna bite me in the a*s.

I'm creating a jumpsuit.

I am still deciding if it's going to be
a jumpsuit or not.

I will base that on my fitting
with my model,

because I know that the judges
are always on me about fit.

One look completely cut out.

I'm taking a lot of risks
with this design.

I've decided to bleach the fabric.

Experimental, isn't it?

It's what avant-garde means,
is going against the grain.

I think the print turned out really great.

It feels very old carnival to me.
[shutter clicks]

It's exactly how I imagined it.

But I've got to get this cut
and ready for the seamstress so it's done.

I need, like, half an hour of sleep.

Everything is going good.

And I have a lot of work to do.

I will try to give

many pieces that I can

to the seamstress.

So the tech pack will be
at the end for me.

If you miss the seamstress pickup,

it's just an added job
that you don't want to do.

You need to be on the ball with that.

[clock ticking]

[Lucie mumbling] Okay.

The seamstress left without the garment.

Avant-garde is really...

...you know, it comes-- it's...

Ah, it's a good question.

I'll answer it.

Give me a second.

Avant-garde is truly making fashion
for the sake of fashion.

It's really an opportunity for a designer
just to go all-out and make their vision.

[laughing] I don't know
why I'm doing this.

I have to do

a jacket,

the coat,

the pencil skirt.

I have to cut.

I have to sew by myself.

But I can... I can do it.

- Lucie.
- Yeah?

- Ah, it's not bad.

Thank God the bleaching came out good.

I'm happy with the effect,
and I'm pushing the boundaries.

I'm the only one doing jeans.

Not like a regular jean,

like something with my DNA on it.

I'm using bleach, studs.

I follow my instinct.

I have to believe in that

and stay true to myself.

I'm risking and I love that.

- I'm wearing denim...

I went to the carnival,
so I did a print on denim.

- Wow.
- And...

[Tim] It's beautiful.

Yeah, that was the idea.

It's a little H. G. Wells.

Yes. That's perfect.

And this is going to be a jean jacket,

which is like a unisex, you know,
versatile...

You know, you can wear it... this way,

I'm going to try to put
a lot of the detailing on it.

So, it's like a new kind of jean jacket.

- I love it. No doubts, just keep going.

This is my accessible look.

Super full and dramatic.

But the silhouette is classic.

I'm actually crazy about it.

Denim, it's a fabric that
every human being can wear...

- ...so, I'm applying all my DNA touches.

If you take the bleaching away, I would
imagine Levi's already has these items.

That's why I felt like if I didn't
bleach it, it's gonna look super basic.

But that's a design issue,
not a textile issue.

If you don't have the bleach,
it's a pretty basic couple of items.

Tell me about the avant-garde look.

Okay, I'm doing the dress,
I put the sequins,

and I want to make some match
with the pocket.

Do you think it's too much?

I just think it begs the question, why?

Avant-garde, it's unusual.

But what's so unusual about those pockets?

I don't see avant-garde in her look,
you know.

I see something a bit more elevated
than her normal.

Alright, I'm going to leave you.

to manipulate the textile,

and I'm gonna have all this pleating

my sort of statement.

I'd encourage you to think about making

that same embellishment
that you're doing now more exuberant.

Right now, it looks one-dimensional,

it looks like a last-minute thought,
though I know it's not.

I want you to be here
for the next assignment.

I'm really surprised by Josh.

While his work is generally amazing,

I feel like, it's an avant-garde
challenge, and, like,

it's time to go big or literally go home.

Tim was a little bit concerned.

I'm like, "Okay, well, I need to do
this 'wowness' with these ruffles

in the back of the jacket."

It's going to be an architectural element
that I need to create

and get that really ex*cuted well.

- Yeah, I love it.

- I love a double mutton.

- It's giving me Missy Elliott vibes.
- Yeah.

understand my perspective?

But that's the most beautiful part
about avant-garde,

it's truly your perspective.

Feeling good about my look is good,

When we knew that we were doing denim,

What I like about your collection so much,
while the textiles are different,

there's a relationship in the shapes.

I tried to make a new way

to wear denim.

It's cut well. I like the level
of where she cut the jacket.

I think a lot of people would buy that,
yet nothing new.

It was a tough challenge,
but I enjoyed it.

anything like this before,

and that's what I want to see.

when it came to denim today.

Yeah. Well, that's why we wanted
to do avant-garde with denim,

to really push the limits and go do
something that we've never seen before,

with this really versatile,
democratic fabric.

I'll be honest with you,
I did not like the avant-garde look.

- But that two-way jacket was phenomenal.

- [Heidi] With the little dress under it.

Our consumer would absolutely love
the versatility

and how easy and effortless it is.

or have a little hidden slit, something
that would have let her glide.

I thought it fit her really well.

was not as exciting, and less chic,

about your avant-garde look.

I wanted to kind of create a look
that was reminiscent of my childhood,

like bubble coats and bookbags,
and I was just like,

I want to, like, put all of that joy
and fun we had into one look.

I think it was incredible.

It pushed the limits. It was like
nothing I had ever seen before.

I also love that you gave us that little
hint of that sheer panel on the side.

I love that you want to bring the drama,
but I did have reservations

about how the model
couldn't really walk so well in the skirt.

It took me out of your fantasy.

When it comes to your accessible look,
I loved the fit of those pants.

That shape is smashing.

It's really difficult to make a wide-leg
pant look beautiful on every shape,

and you allowed those pants
to hug her curves.

Take that pattern, go crazy with it,
'cause you have a winner there.

It is beautiful.

The top part of it, it was a little baggy
and not quite fitting.

Once we got into the back going up,
it didn't quite hold her.

I was kind of lost on that part.

We all preferred the bottom part of it
more than the top part,

but I so appreciate you trying really hard
for making something new

that we all don't have yet.

I love that you think
for many different body types.

You show us new and different silhouettes.

These are all themes
that are part of this collection.

And with Levi's, it's
the perfect time-traveling company.

From the beginning of American history
to the present,

obviously to the future, when we're
all gone, Levi's will still be here.

Is that it?

I was like, "That was amazing."

I wanted to create with the first look,
like, a shadow figure,

and I wanted to also recreate
a denim jacket,

kind of one size fits all
that's versatile.

So, you notice,
the pockets work both ways.

It also could be genderless.

And the print came from some
of the paintings at the carnival.

Printing on jersey, for me, is a really
direct way of telling my story.

You stepped it up so much.

I just love the avant-garde look.

The transparency, the triangles,
just the way you placed them in the back,

it was so unexpected,
but I knew that this was you immediately.

Amazingly ex*cuted,
totally get your vision.

It's just not my flavor, let's say.

But I loved the accessible look.

Honestly, that dress
did not look like denim anymore.

The jacket is genius.

It's perfection.

It was already beautiful, and then
when she's turning it upside-down

and putting it on a different way...

[Heidi] You know, even if it was
just one way around,

it's already like a new silhouette
of a jean jacket.

Having this kind of new, whimsical touch
to it is just that kind of finesse--

that subtlety, but still strength--
it's really good.

Tell us about your looks, Lucie.

It's an iconic jacket from Levi's.

Everybody wore that

when I was a teenager.

For the avant-garde look,

I take for me,
a new way to wear the denim

as a dress coat.

I like the volume of the avant-garde look,

but the shoulders crashing down
just k*lled me.

- I know.
- The accessible look I really liked.

This kind of sexy businesswoman,

but still having what I've seen
is your signature,

these kind of geometric kind of elements.

I actually like both of them.

I feel like denim is your material.

For the accessible, I know
you've seen this before, yeah,

a denim pencil skirt and a denim jacket,

so, I wish I could have got
a little bit more.

Yeah, so it was my taste. Sorry.

I think they were beautiful,
and if done perfectly,

I think anyone would wear them.

- Hey, guys.

Joshua, tell us about your looks.

I kind of wanted to go back
to my carnival experience.

So, I was kind of, like, really inspired
by the costumes that the women wear

with the big, you know, feathers,

and when I was back there in the '90s,

the punks kind of really inspired me
when I saw them for the first time.

So, I wanted to merge
these two worlds together,

so, it was like these punk guys and girls
going to the Notting Hill Carnival.

I like the red and the red denim.
I thought it was a nice surprise.

I like the zipper up the back.

I did not like the pleated element.

I was like, "Oh, red."

And then, I was like,
"Oh, what is attached?"

It was just bizarre.

[Jeremy] It looked sloppy.
That's just all there is to it.

That part looked messy.

I've never worked with boning before,
so I did struggle with that.

But the concept was there, you know.

Even on the back of the avant-garde yoke,
I did the Levi's swirl on a zip.

So, I was trying to connect those elements
with Levi's to the avant-garde.

But concept without proper execution is...
a failure.

And then with the mac,
which I thought was a great shape,

I would have loved more
if you maybe took the red denim

and carried it over there,

with the bleach,
or added a little zipper on it.

The just inside-outside
of the reverse denim,

I just kind of went, "I want more."

I guess I would have almost preferred
the red coat as the wearable look,

without, you know, the fan in the back,

because I feel like
that would have been wearable.

You specialize in suits,
and you had denim to work with,

and that would have been so incredible.

Yeah, I know, but it's too cliché
to do a denim suit.

I mean, I don't like a denim suit.

I just think it's the wrong type of fabric
to use with a suit.

But it's avant-garde.
We are breaking the rules.

I mean, Joshua, think about this.

You won two assignments already.

So, we love what you're doing.
We believe in you.

But it was not good today.

For me, avant-garde also isn't just
about "wowness," it's about the attitude,

and bringing in that punk inspiration,
wanting to, you know,

connect those dots and talk about a story.

I mean, I pushed myself to limits
I didn't know I could do.

Definitely was like assignment that
was super inspiring for me.

Work for Levi's, a huge opportunity.

And I just think about millennials
and new generation.

Millennials are all about self-expression.

They have their own style, and they want
to communicate a different fashion.

So, I just decided to do a pair of jeans,
bleach, studs,

and then I paired it with a jacket.

I thought it was cool,
because it's different.

It was all about having fun
and expressing myself as well.

And my avant-garde look,
I love military jackets,

because military jackets
has a story to tell.

It gives you power.
It gives you confidence.

The first look, I like the jacket.

Immediately, I knew that that was you.

To me, everything apart from the jacket,

it looked like you ran out of time,
for me.

I don't know if that was happening,
to put all that glitter underneath.

And I love glitter,
but it didn't look luxe.

It looked kind of cheap.

The military jacket
seemed very heavy-handed.

It seemed more costumey in that way.

It didn't have, like,
a cool, wearable factor.

Avant-garde doesn't have to be
not wearable. It should just be forward.

But when your pieces came down the runway,

something I loved is I could look at that
and say, "Andrea made that."

I love that.

The second look was a great fit.

She looked amazing.

But it was just that.

Like, I feel like it was a pair of jeans

and a top that I feel like
already exist too.

No, actually, I thought a pair of jeans,
they're an iconic piece.

Even though you took the iconic piece
and you love the iconicness of it,

you have to make it your own.

It's about carrying your essence through
your brand without being predictable.

You said it in your first sentence,
when you said,

"I'm just going to make
a pair of pants and a..."

The "just" is saying everything.

I feel like it has to be more
than "just" that.

If you want to be a designer,
you have to have the passion

where you can't be anything else.

Fashion is my life, and...

all the women of my family
are passionate for fashion,

so I have this in my blood.

I'm an entrepreneur.

I have my business seven years ago,
and I have a successful business.

I'm a Latina conquering
the Anglo market, and...

...and I can tell it's
a very tough industry,

and I can feel it every day of my life.

Um... carrying stores, employees...

But if you are passionate, no matter what,
you have to make it work.

And that's why I'm here,
because I have potential.

I want to share to the world all...
all my passion.

Your passion is very impressive.

I mean, you have to come up
with the goods too,

you know, not just have the passion,
but that definitely helps a lot.
