the first assignment.

It feels great, and it feels, like,
very surreal.

So, let's tell them about
their next assignment, shall we?

Indeed we should.

For your next fashion show, we want to see
your brand's version of resort wear.

Wow.

I love resort, because when we travel,

we are willing to experiment
a little more.

It's everything
you would wear on vacation,

from sexy beachwear
to elegant eveningwear.

Resort wear traditionally refers
to the interseason line of ready-to-wear

between fall/winter
and spring/summer collections.

I have never done resort wear before,

so I am definitely nervous,
just because I was in the bottom

for the first assignment.

So, I really have to, like, prove myself,
or I may be going home.

So, what we really want to see is resort
wear through the lens of your brand.

They've seen a bridal portfolio from me,

so I don't think they fully know
what to expect as far as ready-to-wear.

So, I'm prepared to wow them.

will be immediately available

into the wild of Los Angeles

to get your creative juices flowing.

to have them do the basics--

with them will be

through writing, drawings, tech packs.

You will not be meeting with them.

I almost fell.

For me, there's so many textures out here.
The water texture, the sand texture.

Even the concrete
as you're walking to the beach.

So, I kind of want to merge
those two worlds together.

For the first assignment, the judges
kind of weren't impressed

with what I put down the runway.

I'm going to have to prove to them
that I deserve to be here.

I'm getting back to my roots, you know,
something that reflects my tailoring.

I want to do a suit jacket and shorts.

The jacket's going to be deconstructed
in a really poppy color.

I saw the lifeguard place up there.

I have been thinking
about that seafoam color.

I think that's one of the color palettes
I'm going to use.

I like the industrial aspect of the beach,
so maybe tying in some hardware.

I have never done resort wear before.

I'm a little worried about that.
[chuckles]

- Beautiful, right?
- It's pretty.

[Raf] The property
is also very amazing.

It has a lot of plants
and flowers and greenery.

So, I'm immediately attracted
to all the colors that they have.

Lucie, you're in my shot!

I don't typically do resort wear,

but I do go on vacation,
and I love to go on vacation.

So, I'm mimicking what it is
that I would like to wear.

I'm creating a swimsuit
with a sheer trench coat.

I do have some concerns
about my bridal background,

because I want to make everything
shiny and sparkly,

and this is definitely
not the time for sequin.

My brand, it's all about happiness
and joy and color,

and I want to bring that to this ensemble.

I'm working on this panel dress.

The second look, I'm working on a blouse,

and I may actually end up
designing the print.

I'm trying to make sure I come up with
designs that the judges like.

The fabric barn.

I'm looking for some white linen,
because we're going on vacation.

We are at the fabric boutique
for the first time, and it is stocked.

And we get to take and use
as much as we want.

Being short in this space sucks.

I'm designing swimsuit.

I never do a swimsuit before.

I'm here in U.S.,

I'm in California.

So, I think I have to adapt
a little bit, my style

and collection into really more
West Coast... California.

My name is Lucie Brochard.

I am 37 years old

and I am living in Paris.

This is my daddy.

Bonjour.

I was born in Korea

and I was adopted when

I was four and my sister was six.

I was raised by a French father

and a Vietnamese mother.

My hometown,

where I grew up.

Paris is part of my creation
and all of my taste.

My brand is to listen to those women

who stand tall in a man's world.

I design for a lot of Korean celebrities.

The biggest one was
president's wife of Korean president.

I'm married and
I have husband and...

and a baby.

[Lucie speaking French]

It's hard to be far from my family,

but this is the biggest opportunity
for my brand.

If I'm winning this first prize,

I will say

I'm a Parisian

who believe in the American Dream.

Why is it so quiet in here?

Can we just edit all the photos we've
taken for inspiration on the computer?

[woman] Yes.

In the design studio, we have the ability
to make our own print design.

So, I've created this motif, this sort of
lightening bolt, repeating motif.

It looks really good.
The colors really pop.

So, I'm excited to get that fabric back.

I'm considering getting this print done
in a spandex,

so I'm going to go
and get this scanned in,

and create a pattern inspired by this one.

this seafoam color.

Quite vibrant, quite nice for a suit.

My name is Dushyant Asthana.

I was born in Jaipur, India,
and I live in Los Angeles now,

and I consider myself
a Jaipur-born Angelino.

I am actually not educated
in fashion at all.

So, I went to school for engineering.

I didn't get into the fashion industry
until about a few years ago,

where I decided that I really wanted
to do what I love to do.

So, a lot of my brand incorporates
taking my sensibilities

from Jaipur while growing up,

the color blast, the sensory feel
that that culture has,

and then blending that
with this rugged Western world.

Life hasn't really come easy to me, ever.

Me moving to America was not easy.

Me finding a job wasn't easy.

I was unemployed for five months,
sleeping on friends' couches.

But I established the brand
a few years ago.

There's a billion people in India
that may be looking at me as, like,

"He's one of us.

"And if he, a boy from a humble family
in India, can go to Hollywood,

can go to L.A., build something
like this, we can too."

And I feel I have what it takes
to take this business to the next level

and create the next global brand.

So, it's a pleat dress.

different kind of fabric.

- Combining all these materials?
- Yeah, exactly.

It just seems that there's
an awful lot going on

that you don't need to have going on.

I look at this,
and I already see two looks.

So, let's move on to the other look.
What is it?

A swimsuit.

Something like

playing with the shape but

colorful.

and I think like everybody here

is Californian.

We like your Parisian sophistication.

Andrea, how are you doing?

Well, right now, I'm creating a chiffon
over jacket, like a little coverup.

Okay. And what's going underneath?

- I'm creating a swimsuit.

So, what I did was I actually took
this print, and I shrunk it.

- Oh, yourself.
- Yeah.

I'm creating a matching swimsuit.

I also like this print very much.

Yeah, I think it's really cool.

And what's your second look?

It's gonna be a bodycon.
It's actually gonna be the same print.

- Oh.
- And...

But I expanded it
and made it symmetrical.

- So it's another print that you created.
- Yeah.

- Let me ask you this.

I know it's a coverup.

Does that neckline make it too covered up?

It just seems as though it's somewhat
out of step with the season.

Yeah. You know what? You're--

I wanted to kind of focus on, like,
functional clothing for the beach.

I'm doing a snap-panel pant.

Then I'm going to do a matching jacket
that has zippers and lots of snaps.

And I may be over...

Overly ambitious.

Your ambitions have to be in sync
with the timeframe.

So, I should just keep the sleeves
like normal.

- You're never like normal.
- Okay. [laughs]

My name's Olivia Oblanc.

I am a 4'11", 26-year-old designer
based in Brooklyn, New York,

born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Aah!

I've been running the brand
since August of 2017.

OBLANC is a unisex clothing
and accessories brand

that focuses on reinterpreting
workwear functionality.

I started sewing my sophomore year
of high school,

and it became my obsession.

Finally hitting the sewing machine.

And I knew I wanted to be a designer.

So, my senior year,
I applied to Parsons and got in.

I entered in a lot of competitions,
won them all.

Aah!

And when I graduated,
I decided to start my brand.

What has really been a huge help for me
has been my collaborations with Adidas.

They asked me to
do a collection for them.

They really liked my strength
in outerwear

and my really creative Instagram.

I'm just obsessed with fashion.

So, I think I'll k*ll it for the show.

[Ally] The base fabric is a true white.

I appreciate each model being one color.

I'm just thinking about
the two of them together.

Alright, so I need to go back
to the drawing board...

- No, just back to the fabric boutique.
- The fabric store, yes.

I'm all about details.

I want something more dress-up.

I want something glamorous.

The runway look in your drawing
looks very '80s.

I decided to bring this print forward,
but super large-scale.

Fantastic.

- This textile is stunning.
- I just changed it.

- Oh, you... from what?
- From this.

Thank the Lord baby Jesus.

Currently, I am cutting the sleeves
of a free-flowing panel dress.

Initially, my plan was to create a dress
that has contrasting panels.

- Okay.
- But, unfortunately,

I was unable to find a contrasting fabric,
so I'm going to create a dress

that has panels in the same fabric.

- So, you're using this textile?
- Yeah, 17th/18th-century India-inspired.

[Tim] I see it.

The second look is going to be separate,
so I have designed a motif

that is in print right now,
so I'm going to make a blouse out of that,

and I'm going to pair
it with looser pants.

But I just want you to really think about
the cohesion here.

What's the connection?

It remains in the same color family.

- That's a good counterpoint, in theory.
- Okay.

- You need to think about balancing.
- Okay. Yeah.

- I'm listening to the judges' feedback.
- Yeah.

You know, I'm gonna definitely
draw inspiration from my old stuff.

- I did a print this morning.

You know, I scanned
in sand from the beach.

- I took photos of the water textures.
- Ah.

- I'm gonna do it in a kimono.
- Okay.

For the guy, I'm gonna do the short
in the same print,

but then tone it down
with the seafoam cotton suit jacket.

I really love the seafoam color,
and I saw it down at the beach today.

- Um, and this...
- I will tell you, it's a tough color.

It tends to look dowdy.

It's up to you; you're the designer.

That color doesn't get
a very good response.

Pastels in general are problematic.

I would have something
that has a little more...

- Punch.
- Yeah.

It's not that I'm stressed.
I'm just worried, you know,

that I had to cut a new suit jacket.

that embodies your brand's version
of resort wear.

Your social media photographs
will be judged by a panel of influencers

who work with a brand called The Drop.

It is an Amazon Fashion brand
that partners with influencers

to design of-the-moment,
limited-edition collections.

Our panel consists of
the following influencers:

Samantha Lauren of What Would Kiki Wear,

Suede Brooks,

Ellen Kim of Spread Fashion blog,

Ginger Lou,

and Makeda of Glamazon Diaries.

- [Ally] Yes! That's so cool.

And their input will be shared
with the judges,

so, it will figure into their decision.

The winner of this assignment
will also get the opportunity

to collaborate
with one of these influencers

to develop a limited-edition collection

to be sold exclusively on The Drop.

I mean, I want to, like, scream.

It's super cool, because it's like,
all about new drops.

It's like, new collections coming in.

resort wear is a staple in the industry

and a big part
of many designers' revenue stream.

We're here to find the designer who can
create the next great global brand.

The designer behind the brand
is just as important

as the clothes that walk
in the fashion show.

We discussed each of your designs,
and based on this,

we have made some decisions.

But they're not necessarily final.

As you know, a conversation
can change our mind.

For this assignment,
we had influencers from The Drop

review your social media posts

and vote on the ones they liked best.

And we will take their feedback
into consideration.

The winner will get to create
a capsule collection

with one of these influencers.

We're going to talk
to a few of you tonight.

Tell us about your two looks
and how they represent your brand.

So, I decided to... to have fun.

Be more creative with the colors.

I tried to play with the pleats,

with the juxtaposition.

I work a lot with volume

at the same time graphic.

Obviously, there was workmanship
with all these layers of the fabric,

but I have a question.

With the model holding it,
is it because she had to hold it?

- No.
- No.

It's my fault, because I asked
in the last minute,

"Just put your arm, like,
just under the dress."

- [Heidi] Uh-huh.
- Oh.

When it walked out, it intrigued me
of who this designer is.

I loved the collaging, the print,
and the sheerness.

However, the construction was really poor.

[Winnie] The fabric was also very baggy.

I was very sad watching this one,

'cause I don't want a saggy butt
on the beach.

I didn't care for the layer upon the layer
upon the layer

in either, to be honest with you.

But I want to say that, in your favor,
there was a point of view.

I see that you have something
that you're trying to say,

and I think that's important.

Will you please tell us
about your two-look collection

and how it fits into your brand?

My brand is all about taking inspiration
from Indian motifs

and fabrics and styles
that have existed for centuries.

So, the first outfit, I chose
this 18th-century-inspired floral

that really is the DNA of my brand.

For the second look,
I actually created a print,

because one of the things that I do,
like my shirt, I create the motifs,

so the two looks fit into
the resort wear collection.

Well, I had a really hard time,
I have to say.

For me, they were too basic.

There was no fun in anything.

The second look, I just didn't even
understand why they were together

and didn't really match.

It's just kind of soft tones,
and it didn't feel inspiring.

[Heidi] Prabal, what do you think?

You know, I can see a lot of people
wearing it,

but resort is the one chance as designers,
we can go wild.

And when you look at the market,
how do you stand out?

Let's take a look
at your social media photo.

- Hmm.
- I can't really see the clothes.

I'm seeing odd prints
that aren't very flattering.

This is something
that I would scroll past.

[Jeremy] It's more like,
"Oh, look at our lovely deck."

I'm not thinking,
"Oh, it's about these clothes."

[Dushyant] Hmm.

What was your thought process behind this?

I wanted them on that scooter, 'cause
that sort of represents that beachy vibe,

and then I wanted to create
this curiosity and...

So, what is the viewer curious about

when they're scrolling through
all of their images

and make them stop?

Well, the attitude of the models,
the, uh...

the... the color palette
and the way it's shot.

Why don't we start with you telling us
about your two looks?

After what happened last week,
the feedback you guys gave me,

I really wanted to show you my true DNA.

So, the first look was a men's suit.

I wanted to give you that tailoring
and that essence of surprise.

And the women's accessible look,

I really wanted to make an impact
in the color palette.

I created this print.

Those textures are rocks, the sand,
the wires on the telephone lines

that sort of merge
all these worlds together.

You know, the city connects to nature,

and I think it's really important
that we live cohesively with the world,

and I'm super passionate
about sustainability.

So, I wanted to draw those elements
in my print.

You really turned yourself around.

Last time, I was like,
"I don't really want anything."

Now, I'm like, "I want all of it."

- Cool.
- I feel that would sell like hotcakes.

- Thank you.
- You know, we can make clothes,

we can create fashion as much as we want,
for consumption.

But the fact that you even brought up
the word "sustainability,"

especially in today's world,
is just so crucial, so important.

I took the fit thing into my head,

that was wrong with that garment,

I was gonna attack it.

And I didn't want to run away
from my curvy model.

[laughs] So, I created the print
for my swimsuit and for my bodycon dress.

I like pairing prints.
I like matchy-matchy.

I think you way outdid that print.

It's bold, it's strong, it felt unique.

something that
a lot of designers can't do.

You are able to celebrate
women of different sizes

and make them look equally beautiful.

When the curvy model
in the swimsuit came out,

and she felt that confident,

what struck me was, you really see them.

You don't consider them as just models,

you consider them as human beings,
and that's what it is.

As design is created,
people are storytellers,

and storytellers are healers.

And today, with your looks,
you healed a lot of people.

So, that's really an incredible job.
