[Sarah] We've survived a week.
We have a lot ahead of us.
Five months is going to fly by.
I have a lot of confidence in our ability
to work hard and get it done.
But if this doesn't work,
-we're homeless and out of business.
-Why are you trying to freak me out?
[Sarah] Sauble Beach
is a seasonal beach town.
We need to be up and running
at the beginning of June,
so we can cash in
on the short summer season.
We need a contractor
to start working right away.
-This is a huge project.
-[April] Twenty-four guest rooms.
[Sarah] We have a restaurant, a pool,
we have another building
that we don't know
what we're gonna do with it.
And only five months. So we definitely--
-Yeah, big job.
-It's a lot.
Have you had a chance
to look at our website?
I looked it up.
I saw lots of flowery colors.
-[chuckles]
-Yeah.
-There's lots of wallpaper.
-We really like wallpaper.
-Some pink doors.
-There will be pink.
Doesn't say a lot,
but he has agreed to do the project.
Fairly certain I won't be
loving pink when we're done,
-but I'll keep an open mind.
-[laughs]
All right.
Do you think Sauble Beach is ready
for The June Motel to be here?
The Knight's Inn,
back in the day, it was the hotel.
So if you can get to the hotel,
you'll be fine.
-[April] Restore it to its glory days.
-We'll try.
-To The June opening in Sauble.
-Cheers.
-Okay. Welcome to the double rooms.
-Nice.
-[Sarah] These are girls' getaway rooms.
-[April] Yes.
Bachelorette parties is a big part
-of The June Motel experience.
-Sure.
-Did you have a bachelor party?
-I didn't. I was married a while ago.
We only had only dances,
so it was pretty tame.
-[all laugh]
-No, we--
[Sarah] Girls' getaways are
the bread and butter of The June Motel.
It's the most important demographic
for us to target.
So we need these rooms to capture
the spirit of The June.
Fun, feminine, and retro.
We have a lot of ideas.
We want to do 14
of the 24 rooms as double rooms.
Our goal is to nail this one room.
We're gonna call it the prototype room.
-Okay.
-Then we replicate 13 times.
Our budget is pretty tight
on all of the guest rooms.
So we're really trying to keep everything
to new floors and paints and wallpaper.
-That kind of thing.
-We grabbed some flooring samples.
-[April] This one's way too rustic.
-Yeah, too dark.
[April] We really wanted a light floor,
and it feels beachy.
-Winner.
-[Sarah] That is an easy decision.
Any of these three will be fine.
Probably 30- or 40-year warranty on 'em.
-They're a vinyl plank, easy to install.
-That's good.
-We'll glue 'em down, so they never move.
-Let's chat about those lights.
And what we can do
to move that center sconce.
-It is a concrete wall.
-Okay.
So we have to somehow get a wire to that.
We want to open up
the least number of walls.
If we build a wall or a headboard
in front of that, we can hide the wires.
-I mean--
-Okay.
That's a way to get rid of
the headboards we don't love.
-Yeah. We'll build a headboard.
-Sure.
-We have questions about the bathroom.
-[April] It's the scary part.
-Yup.
-So many things need to be replaced.
We need to Junify these bathrooms.
They need to be a lot less yellow
and a lot prettier.
Our guests, they do this thing
-called a "mirror selfie."
-Oh, yeah?
Rick, have you ever taken
a bathroom mirror selfie?
No, this, uh… isn't something I've done.
-Yeah.
-[shutter clicks]
-Rick--
-We're lookin' at the mirror?
-Yeah. Look at the mirror.
-Oh.
-Let's just say this is the first of many.
-This is the first.
-You want it removed? Everything?
-[Sarah] Depends what we can afford.
[April] I'm thinking a bold
pink tiled backsplash.
[Sarah] Keep the original
retro light fixtures,
but spray paint the hardware white.
Crisp, new white counter, white sink.
[April] A completely tiled, bold
and funky bath shower combo
would be amazing.
I've been dreaming of these multicolored
terrazzo floor tiles
which would just tie it all together.
[Sarah] Or, since we don't hate them,
we keep the original floor tiles
to save some money.
I don't think this bathroom
has changed since 1979.
-That was the year I was born.
-[both] Oh.
-[both] All right.
-[Rick] It's good.
-You're aging better than this bathroom.
-Oh, thanks.
-I'm not sure how to take that.
-[Sarah laughs] Yeah.
[Sarah] Hello, world, it's Tuesday.
And here at The June Motel
in Sauble Beach, it is now Taco Tuesday.
April and Courtney
are slaving away over there,
and I poured us all something to drink.
-Taco Tuesday is the best day of the week.
-It's fine.
It's a bit like we're in
real-life Schitt's Creek right now.
Cheers.
-[Sarah] The fun stuff.
-Best part of the job.
-[Sarah] Can't wait to dig in.
-[April] I know.
What we're going for
is, like, a really bold, retro feel.
[Sarah] Statement wallpaper
behind the bed.
It's The June Motel.
-The palm print's so pretty.
-It's so pretty.
-It's stunning.
-Stunning.
And it's so bold. Love this wallpaper.
-I know.
-It's so beautiful.
But I don't know if it's the right vibe.
When you think Sauble, it's very sandy,
and, like, the colors feel
-a little bit more faded and retro.
-Mm-hm.
[April] Summer colors like
that faded yellow, turquoise, and orange.
Leaning into that lake and those sunsets
is a good focus
to move forward with the design.
We've looked through
so many wallpaper books.
-I'm not drawn to any of them.
-I know.
I think we're gonna have
to go custom on the wallpaper.
It'll be more expensive,
but we have to get this right.
Then I think we have to find ways
to save money with the bathroom tile.
We've already used this in the residence,
but it's such an affordable tile
and it's such a perfect color.
[April] Our dream
is a fully tiled bathroom.
Vanity wall, shower. You know
I want those terrazzo floor tiles.
What about this? I love a terrazzo.
-Lots of nice colors to work with.
-I'm obsessed with this tile.
I think this tile kinda naturally pulls,
like, our color palette.
You might not get
the wallpaper and the tiles.
-We'll see.
-Don't make me choose.
[Sarah] You might have to!
[Sarah] The double prototype room
is finally being gutted.
Which is great, because
summer will be here before we know it.
So we've invited our best friends to come
test out the room in a couple of weeks.
They are the quintessential
June Motel guests.
Our key demographic.
[Sarah] There are 13 more
double rooms to get through,
so we need to nail this prototype down
to every single detail.
In the double prototype room,
Rick suggested we build a custom headboard
to avoid moving some of the electrical.
These are some wood tambour samples.
This is a chance to have
a bit of a design moment.
-[Sarah] These are the real '70s feel.
-[April] This feels a little more modern.
[Sarah] This to me feels like you would
truly find this material in a '70s home.
We could look at a stain.
We're trying to get this, like,
'70s meets beach town,
and I do think
the lighter wood reads a little beachier.
This is more cabin loungy '70s.
I like the natural wood tone.
That totally works.
[Sarah] First big decision.
Okay. The A-frame building.
What are we gonna do with that space?
Our whole business case rests
on not just making money on the rooms,
but also making money from the restaurant
and from that A-frame.
It's not a real A-frame,
but it's what we keep calling it.
No matter what we do,
it has to make us some money.
We've always talked about a nail salon…
-[both] Ooh.
-Or massage studio.
-We know nothing about the spa business.
-All right, fine.
What about, like, a mini wine bar?
There could be people who just wanna
pop in for a glass of rosé.
What about only rosé?
I love that.
Is there anything else?
What's happening there?
Gift shop?
-The Rosé Bar Gift Shop.
-Exactly.
-A sip and shop.
-A sip and shop is so cute!
But if we use that as our lobby…
-Hear me out.
-I'm not into it being the lobby.
But think about even in the County.
We squeeze a lot into
our little lobby space.
-Okay--
-You're not listening!
-You're suggesting we check in at the bar?
-Yes.
You arrive at the motel, you check in,
and while you're sipping that glass
of rosé, you eye what's in the gift shop.
You might not buy,
but when you go to check out,
you're like, "Okay. I'm gonna do it."
It's not the lobby,
it's the Rosé Bar Gift Shop
that people check into.
Making it The June Motel experience
right from the beginning.
We only have $60,000 allocated
in the budget to this space,
so we need to keep that in mind as well.
[April] You know,
I'm not into winter today.
-[Sarah] What day are you into winter?
-[April] Never.
This is prime location when you pull up.
Every single car passing by
sees this building.
-You check in here. You walk through.
-Ooh.
[both laughing]
-Let's go in.
-You break down the window.
[April] Let's not do that yet.
-[Sarah] Let's get in. It's freezing.
-Okay.
-Ugh! Oh, my God!
-Ooh! It's cold!
It's so cold.
[laughs] Oh. No wiping out.
Oh, my God! Ow.
-Aah! Love this space. It's so big.
-Best place in the motel.
You walk in. We pour you a glass of rosé.
Imagine what our gift shop
could look like.
It could be so beautifully curated,
so that it's, like,
really part of the design.
-This is where the guests walk in.
-Sure.
-A grand entrance moment.
-This is it.
-[Sarah] This is your first impression.
-What do you want to see?
What about this being the bar?
You walk in and I just say, "Welcome
to The June. Come have some rosé."
I like that when I walk in,
you're the first person I see,
that I don't have to wonder
where to check in.
The question is,
what's happening behind me?
-[April] For sure windows here.
-[Sarah] A view of the motel.
We have the bar here.
The beautiful gift shop.
Coffee somewhere.
[April] Lots of hanging plants.
Lots of rattan chandeliers.
[Sarah] And a big neon sign.
-I think we need some areas to hang out.
-[April] Yeah.
Get rid of whatever is behind this wall
to create a cozy living room environment.
[Sarah] Kind of a cool space for
the guests, some comfortable couches.
[April] For sure. I love that.
This is a lot to figure out in one day.
[Sarah] It is, but time's tickin'.
We gotta make these decisions.
-[Sarah] Hey, what's up?
-[man] Hi.
-How's the bathroom coming?
-Good, it's comin' along.
We don't wanna go any further
without approval.
You sure you wanna save the tile?
What are you thinking?
-Ah, it's lookin' pretty shitty, isn't it?
-[Dan] It's rough around the edges.
I would suggest taking it out
if it fits in your budget.
[April] I have my heart set
on the terrazzo tiles.
I really think it's the thing
that brings it all together for me.
I'm okay budget-wise. We can do
the terrazzo tiles in the double rooms.
-We'll have to see about the kings.
-I can live with that.
-All right--
-They can be cleaned.
Oh. Don't tell her that.
Whose side are you on?
Sarah and I are super obsessed
with the light fixtures
that are already in the bathroom.
Sarah's very excited
to save some money, of course.
I'm very excited to spray paint something.
Oh, it's cold!
These I've, like, disassembled parts
of the old light fixtures.
So, they are currently silver,
and they are soon going to be white.
So we have this awesome salmon
square tiled backsplash.
The white is gonna really pop with it.
I'm just making this look crisper, fresh.
I think it's gonna look so good.
[Sarah] These are super heavy.
-Ooh! The tambour arrived!
-Huh.
-This is the headboard.
-[Sarah] Yeah.
-I love the color.
-Yeah.
[April] Already got, like, a very beachy,
-wood tone to it.
-[Sarah] Yup.
-Are you ready for the unveiling?
-I'm nervous.
[Sarah] We've worked
with a custom wallpaper designer
to create something
that's really retro, '70s, and bold.
There's a lot I really love
about the colors in this one,
but then on this one,
I really love the wave.
[sighs]
-Feeling like they're a lot.
-You don't like them.
I-- I don't love them.
Individual parts of them I like,
but all of it in one design,
it's a bit much
for the room that we're in.
-I think we want something more abstract.
-Which is a hard thing to explain.
Yeah.
It's not ideal
that we don't love the wallpaper.
We're basically going back to scratch
to create a new one,
which sucks
because until we lock this prototype room,
we can't move on
to the other 13 double rooms.
-Hello?
-Hey, Rick.
I've been doing some research online.
You know in the A-frame, we really want
to get a liquor license here,
but to get a liquor license,
we need to make sure that we have
a commercial kitchen and two bathrooms.
Okay, yeah.
The liquor license process takes months,
but we can't even start it
without those things in place.
And we really want to have that
for when we open.
-Okay. Tomorrow, we'll get at her.
-Okay. Awesome. You're the best.
-No problem. Bye.
-Bye.
[sighs]
Okay.
-[April] We cannot afford to slow down.
-[Sarah] Wall's going up in the A-frame.
Progress is happening
in the double prototype room,
but there's still a lot to figure out
to make the full vision come to life.
Today, we're doing one of our favorite
types of shopping. Plant shopping.
We love decorating and designing
with plants.
They're a really easy way to bring
some color, shape, some life into a space,
but they're a lot of work.
-So we favor faux plants.
-Yeah.
-Nice to be here. We escaped winter and--
-We're in the tropics.
I've learned that looking at plants
can have a very calming effect on you.
-Where did you learn that?
-In Psychology Today.
-I've read up on why you need plants.
-I don't think they meant faux plants.
Actually, they said faux plants
can have the exact same effect.
-Interesting.
-Yes.
Let's regroup on what we're looking for.
One large plant to put in the corner.
-The real statement plant in the room.
-Yes. Yes.
[Sarah] One in the bathroom.
-Something small and decorative.
-[April] Yes.
-Seven fifty, so…
-Ooh! Let's get a few.
-Look, a baby fern.
-Ooh! Get both.
Putting it in the pile.
One fifty-eight. Two sixty-five.
A little more expensive.
Faux plants are the best.
-Maybe I can get a job here.
-[both laugh]
April and Sarah are in the city sourcing.
They're expecting everything
to run smoothly.
But of course, there's a problem.
Dan and Jim just called me and told me
there was something I needed to see
in the bathrooms, and that it wasn't good.
Okay, what's going on?
Well, we discovered everything
is rotted right out.
-Oh, my God.
-You can take the metal and crush it.
The valves are shot. This plumbing's done.
You're probably gonna
find this in all the rooms
-because they're all 40 years old.
-[sighs]
-Well, this is a nightmare.
-It is.
We are so screwed.
You're gonna have to replace
all your studs.
-Everything's gone.
-That won't pass as code.
-No.
-You'll need to redo the whole thing.
So each bathroom
has had this $1,500 setback.
We're having to redo all the plumbing,
replace all the studs,
and add all new drywall.
Fifteen hundred dollars per room,
24 rooms.
Almost $40,000
of the project budget is now lost.
We're trying to figure out
how we still get a great bathroom.
We've decided to forego
the dream tiled statement bath-shower.
We're gonna focus on those terrazzo floors
that April really loves
and let those shine as the statement.
I've put a rush order in
for a basic bathtub-shower combo.
It's $700 all in.
But in the meantime,
our friends were supposed to come.
They're testing out this room.
We've had to push them back a week.
Now, this has this ripple effect,
and we can't move forward
with the rest of the rooms and bathrooms
until we've really nailed
this prototype room.
So, annoying that,
this early in the project,
we are set back on our budget
and on our timeline.
But this is a big project,
and we need to press on.
So I'm sourcing some fun marble.
We have something really exciting
happening in the design of the A-frame.
I'll show you a couple of options
for the bar countertop.
This one's super beachy,
very light and fresh.
So I definitely think
this could be an option.
We've got another terrazzo option here.
Lots of neutrals,
but this one's not quite the right fit.
This terrazzo slab behind me,
I am absolutely obsessed with.
We've got some really beautiful gold,
dark teal,
almost, like, a deep terracotta color.
I'm really excited to show the girls this.
[April] Oh, my God. [sighs]
This is like, 8,000 pounds of tile.
[Sarah] Ooh! We have a wall.
Oh, my God. I don't know, it's weird.
-I got used to seeing it without the wall.
-I know.
[April] We'd originally envisioned
a gift shop nook in this space,
but now we're gonna create
a full retail wall instead.
[Sarah] This space needs
to generate revenue,
so that's how we're gonna make it work.
Can we start thinking about the materials?
Maybe that can guide a whole vision
of what this will look like.
[Sarah] I'm dreaming about
this beautiful tiled bar.
[April] This is the central visual moment
of the entire A-frame.
-Yeah.
-I'm so excited for this part.
We get to really have some fun
with color here.
We have some really, really, really
beautiful marble
-and terrazzo samples.
-Ooh.
You're gonna die when you see this one.
-Rose quartz!
-Oh! It's so gorgeous.
-I don't think it's right for in here now.
-I know. Nothing says Sauble Beach
-like a rose quartz countertop.
-Okay.
This is stunning as well,
and I think it brings in yellows,
some terracotta.
Yeah, sunset colors
with a little bit of lake blue in there.
-[April] Winner.
-[Sarah] I love it.
Oh, my God.
Can't believe we had to gut
the entire thing. Bathtub's in.
-[Sarah] I mean, it's fine.
-[April] I'm not excited about it.
Once we get everything else
into the bathroom,
it's not gonna be the thing to look at.
Right. I'm loving the way
the backsplash tile's looking.
[April] It looks so good.
I love the floor tiles.
It was an expensive decision,
but it does look good.
Ooh! Paint's on the walls.
This is exciting.
[Sarah] A half wall was a good decision.
-I like it.
-Makes it feel brighter
than if we had taken
that color and put it all the way up.
We have full-on floors in here now.
[Sarah] It's amazing.
Almost feels like we have a motel room.
[April] They put the electrical in.
We're finally making progress.
Even though we're over budget,
behind schedule,
we know setbacks are part of the process.
So we'll find a way to get back on track.
We do have one more big decision to make
before Rick and his team move forward
with replicating
the other 13 double rooms.
-Ready to look at these wallpapers?
-I hope this is it.
It's so much more subtle.
Just show me!
I love it.
[April] It's super painterly.
It's abstract.
It's subtle and beachy,
but this is definitely not bold.
It's not a statement wallpaper this time.
We're not just copying and pasting
what we did before.
-It didn't feel right.
-It's mature.
-[April] Yeah.
-It calms me down.
-Are we ready to commit to this wallpaper?
-Oh, a hundred percent.
We finally have a wallpaper.
But this is a new direction for us.
And our friends are coming in four days.
And I'm really curious
to see what they think.
-[Sarah] One decision made.
-[April] Eight thousand more to go.
There's one space
on this property that we've been avoiding.
Hello, restaurant.
That's because we've never done
a restaurant before.
But we know this space
has a ton of design potential.
Hello, depressing entry.
I'm so glad that we decided
to use the A-frame as our lobby.
-Clearly, this has to go.
-[April laughs]
That's going, this is going.
These lights are great.
We need to find a spot to use them.
I love that you're suggesting
we keep something.
-There are things I like to keep.
-It rarely happens.
Yeah, because there's rarely things
that deserve to be kept.
Well, I'm glad
you finally found something.
[April] There's just so much
to figure out here.
[Sarah] For sure.
We have zero restaurant experience.
-But we know the clientele.
-Yeah.
We know we want it to look pretty,
and Sauble Beach so desperately needs
a great restaurant to eat at.
I feel like the guest experience
when you show up to Sauble,
and there's nowhere to get dinner
is not gonna bode well
for the entire motel.
I completely agree.
This has to be a priority for us.
[April] One thing's for sure,
we're lightening up the wood paneled wall.
[Sarah] The ceiling has got to go.
I don't know what's underneath them,
but they cannot stay.
[April] Ripping up the floor
and a statement tile.
[Sarah] Or just the polished concrete
that's underneath.
[April] Adding some light with either
a big window or two double doors.
A lot of great seating.
Maybe even a booth
along the wood paneled wall.
Definitely lots of colorful accents,
lots of plants, and maybe a mural.
Ooh. And opening up that back window
so we can get
a really good indoor-outdoor space.
[April] One hundred percent.
We haven't even started
talking about outside.
It's 100,000
for the restaurant inside and outside.
-[April] We can't forget that.
-Is $100,000 enough? It's all we have.
[April] I know.
So, last night we started assembling
our first bed for the double rooms.
April and Courtney are behind me.
All three of us are working on this bed.
It took three hours for the first bed.
We're gonna be assembling beds forever.
-How's it going, guys?
-[Courtney] Oh, it's going.
[Sarah laughs]
[April] Choosing a bed
with six drawers to assemble?
I don't wanna say I told you so,
but I told you so.
[sighs] The pain might be worth it.
They're functional for guests.
They look great,
and sometimes you gotta go the extra mile.
[Sarah] It finally feels like progress.
The bathroom's coming together.
The tambour headboard
is being clear-coated,
and the sconce
in the middle of the bed looks perfect.
I'd move it in, like, an inch.
-There?
-[both] Yeah.
The headboard has given us
this perfect ledge for leaning some art.
-It's awesome.
-That's such a good moment.
We love leaning art because it looks
a little more casual and lived in.
Oooh! That's very fun too.
When you're choosing art,
you have to decide,
is it gonna be the focal point
or is it an accent?
For us, the wallpaper's the focal point.
-It's a lot.
-I feel like this says retro beach town.
I'm feeling like we still need,
like, maybe a plant hanging.
When you're designing a space,
you want things at different heights
to add some more dimension.
So, hanging a plant
is a really easy way to do that.
Does it look, like, too little
with just the one?
It really looks good with the wallpaper.
This is one of my favorites plants.
I like this one.
-The only problem is this sticks out.
-Yeah.
These are the little touches that I think
give the space true personality.
[Sara] That says The June Motel.
[April] I'm so happy.
These rooms are so good.
[Sarah] Hopefully our friends
say the same thing.
They're pretty blunt.
-[April] Close your eyes.
-[Sarah] Keep 'em closed.
-You have one more step.
-I'm in a stiletto!
[Sarah] Lindsay and Kate
are two of our best friends.
They're here
to really test out the double room.
-Okay. Hold on.
-I feel--
-Okay. All right.
-Okay. Open.
-Oh, it's so lovely!
-[Sarah laughs]
Oh, my gosh! I actually feel like
it's all of the best parts of a sunset.
-[April] Ooh!
-[Sarah] Exactly what we were going for.
Sauble Beach sunset.
[Kate] It's calming. It's beachy.
So, these are the rooms made
for family getaways,
-and more importantly, girls' getaways.
-[April] Yes.
-Is that wallpaper?
-[Sarah] It is!
-Is it waves? Is it sand?
-Interesting.
I like that! I was trying
to get to more of an abstract level.
[Lindsay] That headboard is so amazing.
-[Sarah] Rick made it for us.
-[Lindsay] Oh, my gosh. I love it.
It was the exact reaction we wanted.
[Sarah] We are over budget
and behind schedule.
-We have to get creative and catch up.
-But we have a motel room!
-[Lindsay] I want to see the bathroom.
-[April] Yeah, look.
[Kate] Oh, my God,
these tiles are amazing.
[Sarah] Looks so expensive.
-$2 a square foot.
-[April] I know.
We replaced the floor tiles
-with these fun terrazzos.
-[Lindsay] Oh!
But we did keep the same lights
that we've always had here.
[Kate] Genius.
-[Lindsay] Four could get ready. Love it.
-[cork pops]
-Perfect.
-[April] Ooh!
To our first girls' weekend in Sauble.
Okay, ready?
-What is--
-No pressure.
-It's better from my angle.
