01x02 - The Haunted Hotel

Post by bunniefuu »

Now, a polong is tiny,
the size of a thumb,

and conjured by incantations
over a m*rder*d man's blood.

It has to be fed blood
daily by its owner,

usually by cutting a finger
and allowing it to suck.

- Cool.
- Cool?

A polong sucking blood
out of your thumb?

I haven't got a pet.

Uh, supernatural
beings are not pets.

I didn't mean pet.
I meant friend.

Friend? Thanks a lot!

No. I mean… I don't
know what I mean.

All right. Now, Hantu Galah
has extended bamboo limbs

and Hantu Punjut takes children who
wander off into the jungle at night.

Are you trying to
scare us or something?

Not at all, my daughter.

I simply want you to be aware

that the spirit realm is
a world between worlds,

one we are part of but not of.

That's exactly what we want, to
reveal secrets of the spirit world.

- It's not Ghostbusters.
- It is. A bit.

Go carefully.

The supernatural is the
realm of the ancestors,

and the spirits
can be merciless.

But, equally, they
can be benevolent.

You must learn the difference.

Now, beware the Rakasan,

a flesh-eating demon

that always devours its victims
starting with the feet first.

Guys, basement!

Well, if Rakasan has
my foot in his mouth,

Rakasan has no teeth.

Rakasan needs a dentist.

All right, go away.
Leave me alone.

You got to see
this. Ling. Come on.

Look.

Look at this. Cool.

Fifty hits on
Mr. Midnight. Awesome!

Five thousand is
awesome, 50 is a start.

Fifty hits, dudes!

What's she doing here?

She's with me.

Feet off the table.

Have you guys seen this?

"Do the dead walk the halls
of the Palm Beach Hotel?"

Post from an Amanda Wong.

Who's Amanda Wong?

I don't know, but she wants
us to go to a haunted hotel.

- Yes!
- Yes!

I was going to say, "No way."

"My Great-auntie Grace was a victim
in a bunch of unsolved murders

at Palm Beach 50 years ago."

"Rumor has it the ghosts of the
victims now haunt the hotel corridors."

It's great that people are
engaging with our site.

Probably has a lot to do with my
onscreen presence as Mr. Midnight.

You're a hook for sure,

but this Amanda Wong
is asking us for help.

She fears her auntie's tormented
spirit is one of those ghosts.

A hook? Am I just a hook?

That's so cool. Let's go.

- I'm in.
- Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

So, just to clarify,

you propose we go
to a haunted hotel

populated by the ghosts of
unsolved m*rder victims?

- Yeah.
- Mm.

Fine.

There it is.

Inviting.

I know you believe in ghosts and
that's, like, cultural, I get it.

But, for the record, I don't
believe in ghosts at all.

You were saying?

Let's go.

I can stay and
watch the scooters.

Aren't you, like, Mr. Midnight?

Technically.

Should we live stream?

No.

It would be great for hits.

- No live streaming yet. What if some...
- What if what?

I
mean, what if what?

Whatever, guys, I'm not going to get wet.

Come on.

Hurry! Hurry!

Zoe, enough already!

Let's go!

- Are you all okay?
- Yeah.

Thought it was
meant to be closed.

Well, Amanda Wong sure has
a weird idea of haunted.

- Nat, want to check that post again?
- Yeah.

Whoa.

'70s resort wear is back in.

So chic.

- Is there a shop?
- She definitely says "haunted."

Welcome to the
Palm Beach Hotel.

Do you have a reservation?

Uh, no, we are here to...

Take temporary
shelter. Of course.

The weather is shocking.

Appalling. But it will pass soon

and perhaps, in the meantime,
I could offer you supper.

- Supper?
- Our dumplings are double happiness.

Dumplings? Yes! Dim sum's on me.

Thanks, Mum and Dad.

Yes.

Mm!

Nothing like har gow
to forget everything.

Heaps of chili.

My heat level's like 11.

Mine's like zero.

Of course.

Is it rude to ask for a fork?

Very.

Just stab it with
both chopsticks.

Okay.

Well,
if I was reviewing,

I would give Palm Beach Hotel
five delicious dumplings.

Guys, look.

- Can someone take a pic?
- Sure.

All right.

One…

Guys. Stop, stop, stop!

What?

This… This is not real.

This is not real!

Oh, my God.

- What the…
- Oh, my God!

Oh, my God!

Is mine… Is… Is yours?

Tyar?

Tyar?

Our specialty? Chicken feet.

That's…

I was born
here in Tanah Merah.

My parents were
born in Tanah Merah.

My son, Ben, was born here, too.

Some say, "Build it
and they will come."

Jimmy K says, "We're already here.
Let's hurry up and build it."

A remodeled hotel encourages
tourism, stimulates the economy.

A new mall stimulates
the economy.

A modern Tanah Merah
means jobs and prosperity.

Currently, the location
of the old cinema.

That's right. Thank you,
Mr. Mayor. It's a little rundown.

But, isn't it still running?

It's nearly deserted.

It's quite the eyesore now.

I'm sorry to intrude. Can I
speak with you, Mr. Jimmy?

More problems.

What is it, Sylvia?

This part is under municipal
control. My control.

Another caretaker has
quit at Palm Beach Hotel.

So hire another one.

No one in the village
wants to work there.

They say, um, it's haunted.

Don't say "village," say "city."

Don't say "haunted,"
say "unstable."

An unsafe building that needs
rebuilding. Do I have to think for you?

But we must respect heritage.

Prepare a
demolition application.

We'll raze it the ground in the
middle of night, and it's gone.

We'll see how your
ghosts like that.

Ben.

I need you to go check out
the hotel for me. All right?

Once the area is developed…

He's a good boy, my son.

I'm sorry, where was I?

Ah, yes, I was talking about how
we can all make a lot of money.

Ling?

Nat?

Come out,
come out, wherever you are.

Come out, come out,
wherever you are.

Young man, allow me to assist.

You're an honored
guest, my young friend.

Oh.

Hmm.

Come out, come out,
wherever you are.

I'm coming to find you.

You can't hide forever.

Please pick up, please pick up.

Pa.

What was that?

No, no, no.

No way.

Help.

Tyar? Ling? Anyone?

Ling a ding.

Oh, I mean, hello.

- Hi.
- I need help.

I'm not sure if it's the cold,
but I can't feel my feet!

Relax, Ling.
Relax. That was nothing.

Ling! Ling! Ling!

- We gotta get out of here.
- No! No, not the door. Come here.

What?

Whatever's here doesn't
want us to leave.

I just saw a headless pianist.

Now where's Nat and Zoe?

Head… Headless?

It says in here that one of
the victims was beheaded.

And it explains why the assistant
manager is all smashed up.

He was the last victim
in a m*rder spree.

Pushed down the stairs.

"Assistant Manager,
Theodore Gordon Tan,

was found at the bottom of the
stairs with every limb broken."

He seems to have lost
the art of hospitality.

Well, they said he was m*rder*d.

Maybe he's one of those good
spirits Dad talked about.

But Uncle said we have to
learn to know the difference.

Then we'll work it out.

Where is everybody?

Okay.

Okay.

Get it together, Zoe.

There's no such thing
as ghosts. Okay.

There's no such thing as ghosts.

There is no such
thing as ghosts.

Okay.

There's no such thing as ghosts.

There's no such thing as ghosts.

There's no such thing as ghosts.

Nat?

Ling?

Tyar?

Ling?

- I think Zoe's found them.
- Let's go!

Run!

Whoa!

Oh, my God. Are you okay?

I just saw, like, 50 ghosts, and I
don't even believe in ghosts and…

I want my mum.

Seriously? Your
mum can't help you.

You don't
have to be so mean.

Boarding school since six, I'm way
damaged. Can we get out of here?

- We can't. We're trapped.
- Wait, give me that.

Okay, okay.

What is it?

Here.

They said that the assistant
manager was pushed down the stairs,

but maybe he wasn't. Maybe he
tripped and fell down the stairs.

- Does it matter?
- Maybe.

Did somebody call?

At your service.

Open the door.

Go, go, go, go!

Locked, locked, locked.

Are you kidding me?

- Barricade it!
- You're obsessed!

- You want to become a ghost for a post?
- Getting footage!

- Help!
- No! Help me!

Okay!

You're kinda next level awesome.

Thank you, but maybe
next time you can help.

Room service!

Room service!

Oh, my God, hot here.

- Out of the way!
- Okay, sorry.

- Okay, okay.
- We don't want room service!

- The table! There you go!
- Okay.

- Room service!
- Okay.

- Is that gonna hold?
- Okay.

Go, go, go!

- It's the same head from the fridge!
- What head from the fridge?

Okay, I saw him!

Go, go! Go!

I don't know if this is the best
room to barricade ourselves in.

God.

It's coming!

There's no such thing as ghosts
There's no such thing as ghosts.

There's no such thing as ghosts.

Shut up!

Ladies first.

That's so sexist.

Both of you, just shut up.

Selamatkan kami.

Selamatkan kami.

Is she saying
what I think she's saying?

What's she saying?

It's Bahasa. "Save us."

She must think you
can help her, Tyar.

Like how?

Like how you saved Nat?

Selamatkan kami.

Selamatkan kami.

Look, I
don't know what they mean.

I know what they mean,
but what do they mean?

You're Amanda Wong's
Auntie Grace, aren't you?

Selamatkan kami.

Selamatkan kami.

I think it's
something to do with their names.

Their names!

Do something! Hurry!

"Entertainer Victor Yap Ze Minh,
beheaded by a crazed maniac."

They're
saying, "m*rder*r."

- Ling, read out the names!
- Okay.

"A third victim, Aaron
Shen, stabbed in the back."

No, not that one! The
freak who's chasing me!

"Theodore Gordon Tan, Assistant
Manager, got pushed down the stairs

with every limb broken
by an unknown m*rder*r."

No, no, he wasn't! He
tripped on the same tile as Zoe.

He died by accident.
He didn't get m*rder*d.

It's you, Tyar,
you say his name.

The k*ller is
Theodore Gordon Tan!

What the…

Come on!
Drive! Drive! Drive!

What are you guys doing here?

Hey, isn't that…

Ben, we have to go right now!

All right, all right.

Mr. Midnight is not here to talk
about late night eating spots,

but during last night's visit
to the Palm Beach Hotel,

my supper turned sour when
it was served by a m*rder*r.

Calling a k*ller by his name

released the spirits of his
victims, and they got their revenge.

A message for Amanda
Wong from Mr. Midnight.

Your Auntie Grace thanks you.

Be warned,

the supernatural in
Tanah Merah is active.

Stay vigilant and stay
tuned to Mr. Midnight.

And cut.

- How was I? Awesome?
- Great.

I'm not sure I got the tone exactly
right yet, but it's coming along.

Hey, so did I miss anything?

Whose car was
it back at the hotel?

- Yeah, wasn't that Ben? Jimmy K's son?
- Jimmy K's son? I know.

- He's my host family here, so…
- Great. Just great.

And on that
note, I will say good night.

Wait, Uncle Tan.

Before you leave, I
have to ask something.

What?

Okay.

Did you guys notice,

that the k*ller spirit
was only after me

and only seemed to hear me?

Yup.

Yeah, the other spirits
only wanted our help.

Well, they wanted Tyar's help.

Yeah, when I said the
k*ller's name, nothing.

But when Tyar said it,
the spirits went crazy.

It was nuts.

How can you eat?

It's a stress thing.

The spirits knew
Tyar could help them.

Somehow they just knew.

Of course they did.

That's because Tyar is a dukun.

What's a dukun?

A dukun is someone who
walks between two worlds.

Two worlds?

Amongst the living and the dead.

A living person who can communicate
with and control spirits.

And can heal.

Makes sense why
you're such a weirdo.

He knows what I mean.

I don't know what
anything means.

Then know this.

A dukun must be
constantly vigilant.

You are connected to
the spirit world now.

They will come to you.

- Come to me?
- Yes.

The undead, good and
evil, are drawn to you.

It means your life will
never be same again.

Everything is going to change.
