So we're just outside of Cirencester
in Gloucestershire

heading to our next location.

You know this whole area, it was
a really important Roman settlement.

And it's interesting because
the ghosts of Roman soldiers

are seen quite often
around Cirencester.

The team have been called in

to investigate reports
of paranormal activity

by the owner of this 17th century
six-bedroom manor house

in the Cotswolds.

I can't wait to find out
whether my house

is actually as haunted
as everybody says it is.

It's the home of legendary
interior designer

and TV personality,
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

We moved from London
to the Cotswolds about 15 years ago.

I was filming in India at the time.

My wife found this house on the
internet, came to have a look at it

and sort of bought it right there.

And then rang me and said, I hope
you don't mind, I've bought a house.

By the way, in brackets,
it's kind of haunted.

I've never personally had
any kind of paranormal experience

in the house,
but this is a very, very busy house.

This is a crazy house
most of the time.

There are people all over it.
The whole family is here.

And the thing that's weird is that
there's always one or two of them

who suddenly start saying,
oh, my goodness me,

did you see that?
Or, did you hear that?

Cecile, my oldest daughter,
she definitely feels very strongly

that she's had moments
where things have happened

which she cannot in any way explain.

So it's near constant

that people are reacting
to unexplained phenomena.

One of the weirdest things
that ever happened was

just after last Christmas.

And it was next-door neighbour
and her kid, called Ryder

who was about three or four,

and Ryder and I
were sitting on this sofa

and Ryder was looking
over my shoulder,

right the way through the hall
into the dining room,

and he started kind of pointing
and saying "Red man, big red man,

"who's the big red man?"

And I was sort of saying
"It's probably Father Christmas".

But he still kept saying,
"Red man, red man".

And I looked around quite slowly
and I couldn't see anything at all,

and I thought
that was really extraordinary.

That felt really weird.

It would be absolutely extraordinary
if the team got proof of something

that does give me a sense
that there is someone or something

trying to leave a bit of a message
from the other side.

So, Jayne, are you excited

I am intrigued about this one.

so he knows he's receiving
a genuine spirit message.

Wow. This property
is absolutely stunning.

It's beautiful.
There's a lot going on here.

There's certainly something
that's drawing the attention

to this room to my left,
what looks like a small dining room.

There's some distant sounds,
some noises.

It's a child crying.

It's very funny because this feels
like a beautiful family home

but there's just something to do
with ministers

or something like that.
I'm seeing headstones.

It's almost got

like a church vibe to it.

I'm meeting historian
Robin Shuckburgh.

He's invited me to a piece of land
less than a mile from the house.

The house that we're investigating,
shall we say,

is Robert's House
and I'm assuming that the name

has some kind of significance
to its history?

It most certainly does, yes.

It was bought in about 1618
by John Roberts.

And he was a remarkable man.

He was the founder
of the local Quaker group.

So he was a very religious man.

So the group of Quakers,
John Roberts and his associates,

I imagine they weren't looked
upon too kindly locally.

The trouble is they were questioning

all the fundamental bases
of society,

and they were really preaching
a philosophy

that would have taken away
the sources of income

from senior church figures,
but also landowners and politicians.

So not surprisingly,

those establishments
took very unkindly to this

and persecuted them
in a very considerable way.

Gosh. Can you give me some examples?

How were they persecuted? I can.

They held meetings to worship
in their own way,

which were often raided
by the local authorities.

They were arrested
for things like blasphemy

and trumped up charges of a kind,
all those sorts of things.

When this happened to Roberts
he was imprisoned at least twice.

It's really strange.

Look how I'm holding my hands
in prayer position.

And that just
automatically happened.

There is a gentleman here now

and he's wearing a hat
very similar to mine.

He's all in black.

And he's welcoming.
He's saying, "Friends come forward.

"Friends come forward".

But the name of John
is quite significant.

I don't know whether he's got
a connection to the property

or he visited the property,
but his energy's certainly here.

It's really, really strange.

There's definitely
somebody singing upstairs.

I need to go see if I can catch them

God, my heart's racing
on this landing, it's really long.

And there's rooms
all over the place.

to my right scared me.

It just shot straight across.
It's this black figure.

It's almost like John or somebody
is watching what we're doing.

I've come to meet Laurence's
daughter, Cecile,

who has experienced first-hand

some of the house's
paranormal activity.

Hi Cecile. Hiya.

Hi. So you guys live
in this very historic home.

I mean it's got hundreds of years
of history, hasn't it?

What are your paranormal experiences
in the house?

I'd say my main
most unnerving experience would be

when my eldest was a baby

and I'd put him down
in the corner bedroom,

because there was a cot in there.

And I stepped outside the door
and left it five minutes

and maybe halfway through that,
while he was crying,

I heard this really distinctive,
'shh, shh, shh' sound

and he went absolutely silent.

I went back in again to make sure
there wasn't anyone in there.

There wasn't.
And all of the windows were closed.

So, it wasn't like

I could have heard someone
shushing from outside.

How did that make you feel?
I went like white as a sheet,

and I felt a sort of coldness.

The idea of leaving a child
in a room with a spirit

that seemingly could be soothing
and comforting him,

but it could also be
quite malevolent,

was the most distressing thing
I think.

Still to this day I've struggled
to go back into that room.

Something's happened in this room.

You can feel the energy
in this room...

has changed.

From the landing area
it gets colder in here.

And I've got this
overwhelming smell of perfume.

There again, there's this shadow.
There's...

A shadow's just gone
across this window

and shot there,
into this cupboard here.

I just feel that there's a female.

This lady for some reason
seems to hover in this room.

There's a connection with this lady

and there's something to do
with a child.

Historian Robin has told me
lots about John Roberts,

but now I want to know more about
the Quaker meetings that took place.

I'm curious, were there any women
ever involved in these meetings

and in this movement?
There most certainly were.

There was a rather wonderful woman
called Elizabeth Hewlings,

who was a local midwife.

Undoubtedly had played some part
in Roberts's own children's births.

So she was a great friend
to the family,

and she, along with a group
of other people,

were meeting in this house.

And in came armed representatives
of the local lieutenant,

and they shepherded these people
all up to the top of the stairs

and pushed each of these people
down the stairs, in the house.

Most of them were OK
but Elizabeth was not.

She was extremely badly injured

and she died of her injuries
just a few days later.

Oh, my goodness.

And this wonderful piece
of slightly spooky ground

is the burial ground
for the Quakers.

This land was given to them
by the Roberts family

because they weren't allowed
to be buried anywhere else.

And there are 68 people
buried in this plot of land,

all of them local Quakers.
My goodness.

I'm very conscious
that we're standing

on top of many
of those wonderful people.

There was lots of other answers
to what it would be

that aren't potentially spirits
or ghosts.

In a way, I'd be quite tempted
to have been proven wrong.

it would be quite satisfying.

Have you experienced anything else
in the home?

My sister said that
she once thought she saw a boy

in the dog room downstairs,
next to the kitchen.

Can you describe anymore?
What did she see exactly?

She said it was sort of
a youngish boy,

maybe eight or nine years old.

I think it did unsettle her
quite a lot.

I don't know that he was altogether,
you know, alive-seeming.

It was quite a gruesome one...
Semi-transparent or...

So that's telling me that somebody
is walking across this landing area.

And we need to find out
who that could be.

This house is really, really active.
There's a lot of history here.

of this property, it's fascinating.

of John Roberts, of course,

he was quite a well-known Quaker
who lived here in the house,

hence the name Roberts House.

He had one member of his group,
a lady.

Her name was Elizabeth Hewlings,

and she was a really
well respected midwife in the area.

And they held meetings
here at the house,

which were often raided.

And there was one particular raid

in which the group were actually
pushed down the stairs here

and she later died
of those injuries.

Really? What a tragic waste.

The burial plot there,
there are 68 Quakers buried there.

So he's quite weak,
but he's in red still.

stone manor house.

And it's also where Hermione,
Cecile's sister,

saw the apparition of a little boy.

in the dining room area.

The third camera I've positioned
in the lounge area.

Now, this is the room
that we did spirit triggers.

And that's where I saw
the gentleman near the fireplace.

Camera number four is on the stairs.

The fifth camera is upstairs
and this is in the corner bedroom.

This is the room where Cecile heard
that shushing sound

and was pretty terrified
during spirit triggers.

And that's where I sensed a female.

The sixth camera is also
in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

And the seventh
and eighth infrared cameras

are positioned on the top floor.

So I think tonight's investigation
is gonna be a challenging one.

How did you all sleep?

Very well.
Yes, we, we... Yes, we did. We did.

Well, we had a very,
very interesting evening.

Did you? Did you? Did you? Yes.

And it was actually
as a result of your experiences

during the spirit trigger session
that once you left us,

we decided as a team
that I would go into that room

on my own for a period,

and I decided to try
a very traditional method

of divination, of communication,
and that's mirror scrying.

And actually I began to feel

there was a tremendous sadness
of a loss.

I definitely felt

that was being kind of placed
upon me by someone else,

and the only logical person
would be Elizabeth.

So that was quite
a powerful experience for me.

When I rejoined the boys down here,

it really did then seem to intensify
and we wondered actually

whether I had really opened up

this channel of communication
with Elizabeth

and maybe she had
in fact followed me downstairs

because we started to get responses
which did seem to be from her.

That was the first response,
very quickly followed by this one.

She will have experienced that here
because the Roberts' had lost

and they had stillborn children.

Oh! The next thing I asked... Oh.

is that why you're still here?

And she said 'k*lled'.

So we felt that maybe another reason

she was here was justice
or injustice.

And that actually seemed
to come through for us later.

Oh, my...

We didn't know about Elizabeth.

Well, there were other responses
that came through

literally moments after those.

We felt that we needed
to get back in that bedroom

because it is such a centre
for the energy

and the spiritual activity
in the house.

So we did that.

I was using what's called
a structured light sensor camera,

the SLS camera.

Now, if this camera detects
anomalies, spirit form,

it will show them as stick figures.

Have a look at this.

There were two that appeared
either side of Jayne.

Oh, yes. Look. There's one.

There's one right there.
Yeah, yeah.

The figure that appears
almost seems to be standing

where the cot was,
as if the bed isn't there.

Yeah. Yeah.

I felt someone put their hand
on my left shoulder.

So I turned around and Ian says,
ask who it is. And I did.

And we got a clear female response,

which I didn't pick up on
at the time.

Let's ask who did it.

Hm. That was Elizabeth.

She was telling us her name. Yeah.

Who did it? It was her.

She was comforting us
or reassuring us.

I think we've got
more than enough evidence here

to convince us that her energy's
very much in the house.

And then we had a word come out
on the Alice Box again.

And we had West.

And we knew that
there was a Daniel West, a Quaker,

buried at the burial plot.

During this part
of the investigation

I suddenly got called
from Nerve Centre saying, Barri,

the light that you placed
in the utility room in the kitchen

has turned on by itself.

And I was using a small robot toy,
which I call Brian,

and we thought that by using this,

it might encourage the spirit
of the little boy to play.

Oh, my God, it did. Right.

Brian decided to do a little dance.
Really?

And moved around, and then
he got knocked over backwards.

What was interesting
is when I picked him up

it had been switched off. Wow.

And what I'm about to play
for you was recorded...

Right.
..but we heard it at the time

and it sent us into something
of a panicked,

frenzied, stunned state.

So I don't need to explain it
to you. You will hear it.

We know that a Daniel West is buried
in the Quaker burial plot.

It's, 'I'm here',
and it's from a distance.

Oh!
It was so clear. I've got children.

I knew the tone and the pitch,
I knew that was a child.

Well, obviously, I mean, you know,
whatever the emotion behind it,

it's a successful communication.

You know, whoever it was,

was actually they achieved
being able to speak to you.

Yeah. You were there.

You achieved listening to them.
That's right.

We were very lucky
and privileged to receive

such intelligent responses
from spirit in your home.

The kind of bottom line for us is,
you know, we didn't do anything

to send them anywhere
because that's not our place.

Actually, they belong here.

As long as you're happy with them.
I could not agree more. And...

And what I love about all of this
is the fact that

I think we now feel as if we know
people that have been here before.

It's been sort of slightly abstract
and it's always been there.

It's a very old house.
It's got a very long history.

But to actually link
with some of these names,

has been very powerful...
That's lovely, it's really lovely.

The big thing to come away from this
is ever since that experience

I've felt quite a large
sort of sense of distress

that now sort of having
almost a greater understanding

of where that might stem from...
Yeah. Yeah.

..is a lot more comforting

than the idea of there
not being spirits at all.

Of course. Yeah.
And I think at times,

once their story's been told,

it's almost like it puts them
at rest themselves

because they've had a voice
haven't they?

Mm. John Roberts,
I think he is a residual energy.

I don't think that he was able
to intelligently communicate with us

during the evening.

I do feel that the responses we got
were from Elizabeth and Daniel

and I think that John's essence
is here because he's part,

very much part of the fabric
and the stonework.

The thing that we need to do

is we've got to go
and put flowers on the burial plot,

because I think Elizabeth
was very, very specific about that.

I think that's nice,
I think that's lovely.

It's been another
fascinating investigation

that gave us
some wonderful evidence.

But who knows
what the next case will bring?
