[song playing over radio]

- [birds squawking]

- [crows cawing]

[water sloshing, bubbling]

[water sloshing, bubbling]

[toilet flushing]

[footsteps approaching]

[man] Now that that's done

Good grief.

Next time you clog your toilet,

deal with it yourself.

Don't summon me.

[gasping] My ramen. What happened?

[boy] I ate it.

[man] You ate-- Whatever for?

Would've gotten soggy just sitting there.

Huh?

Last time I called you here

to fix the leak in my roof,

you said it was my fault

that your ramen got all soggy.

Come on. [grunting]

You can't just eat it.

So, you would've eaten soggy ramen?

You bet I would.

Then why'd you complain so much

about soggy noodles last time?

Well, because

Were you lying to me then,

or are you lying now?

[man seething]

[boy] It's okay. I forgive you.

[footsteps approaching]

[music stops]

Look, if you want to bring me here,

there are other ways to make it happen.

They have this thing called a telephone.

I'd still have to wait for you to show,

and there's no way to guarantee

you'd come right away.

I'm saying it takes more work

to activate a summoning circle

than to pick up a plunger!

We've been over this before.

I'm half human, okay?

I can never make it through properly.

That's simply because the human side

of your lineage is resisting.

Let yourself give in and do my bidding.

[seething] That's not the dang issue,

and you know it.

[opening theme music playing]

AKUMA KUN

[music fades]

EPISODE 1 DEMONS

- [electricity humming]

- [footsteps approaching]

[tense music playing]

[bushes rustling]

[man grunting]

- [bushes rustling]

- [man] Hmm?

[bushes continue rustling]

[man grunting, shuddering]

[man] The hell was that?

[grunting] It's really starting

to creep me out.

[man yawning]

[man] Maybe I'm just beat.

I'm gonna ditch tomorrow's class.

[man grunting]

[sinister music playing]

[man gasping]

[man] What is that?

[creature groaning]

- [creature exclaiming]

- [man screaming, grunting]

What the hell are you?!

- [creature exclaiming]

- [man screaming]

[melancholy macabre music playing]

MILLENARIANISM RESEARCH INSTITUTE

[tense music playing]

[objects clattering]

[door creaking]

[footsteps approaching]

Excuse me, is anyone here?

[object squeaking]

[dishes clattering]

[woman] Hello?

[man] Hmm?

Oh. We'll be right with you, miss.

[dish clattering]

[man] All right. We've got a client!

We can pay rent!

I bid you welcome.

[woman] Would you happen to be Akuma Kun?

We work together.

I am Mephistopheles

[chuckling] the Third.

[woman] Oh.

[Mephisto III grunting]

Please come in and have a seat,

and we can work from there.

What's your name?

It's Hina Asanagi.

[Mephisto III] What can we do for you?

- Well, a mysterious-- Huh?

- [Akuma] No.

We're not interested.

We're the

Millenarianism Research Institute,

and we're busy.

[Mephisto III] You ever heard,

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?"

[Akuma] Isn't that supposed to mean

that we should refrain

from judging a gift we've been given?

I disagree with that interpretation.

[Mephisto III] This isn't about that.

I'm talking about our rent,

which is way past due.

[Hina] Sorry, but are you Akuma Kun?

[Akuma] The second one.

A once-every-ten-thousand-year genius.

- [contemplative music playing]

- [Hina] Hmm.

- [Mephisto III] Care for some coffee?

- Yes, please.

[Mephisto III] It's Kilimanjaro.

The beans are dark-roasted

to remove the acidity.

Now, then, tell us your story.

Right.

Two of my friends from the university

I attend were k*lled in accidents.

[Akuma] Accidents are the second-leading

cause of death for 20-somethings.

It's rather common.

The leading cause of death is suicide.

But both of their accidents happened

at the same time on the same day.

Even though they lived

in completely different places.

- And that's not the only thing.

- [Akuma] Hmm?

[Hina] Three other people in Kamichofu

also died at the exact same time.

Now you have my interest.

[Mephisto III] Don't be impolite.

- [Akuma] It's intriguing.

- [Mephisto III] Hush.

[Hina] This was the moment

where my story with Akuma Kun began.

Ever since that day,

my nights have been plagued

with strange dreams.

[Mephisto III] That seems normal,

given the circumstances.

[Hina] Yes, but these are different.

[door opening]

[woman] Oh. Hina, you've brought guests.

How unexpected.

Mother, these are friends of mine.

Hi. I'm gonna go ahead

and check out your bedroom.

[all gasping]

- [Hina] How do you know where my room is?

- [Mephisto III] Wait.

[Hina] I I can lead you there.

It's obvious once you take

the house's structure into account.

Would you please wait?

Stop being rude to our client.

What makes you think you can

just barge into a lady's room?

It's inconsiderate.

[Hina] I wasn't really expecting visitors.

- [Akuma] Don't let it bother you.

- [Hina] But it is bothering me.

So I guess this is how your partner

normally behaves.

[Mephisto III] His genius doesn't cover

interpersonal skills,

but it isn't unusual

for him to ask to see a client's room.

I made tea if you'd like some.

[Hina] Thank you, mother.

- [Mephisto III] That's so kind.

- [Akuma] I could go for some hotcakes.

[all gasping]

I want something sweet to go with the tea.

Will you stop being so demanding?

Wait. What's wrong

with asking for what I want?

[Mephisto III] You can't stroll

into someone's house and demand hotcakes.

[woman chuckling]

Oh, it's quite all right.

I'll, uh, whip up some pancakes for you.

[Akuma] I don't want pancakes.

I want hotcakes.

And with butter, not margarine.

And maple syrup too.

Oh. I'm surprised you didn't already know.

Hotcakes are just like pancakes.

They're functionally the same thing.

[Akuma] Then as a member

of the primate order,

you're functionally the same as a monkey.

[woman grunting]

[Akuma] I asked for hotcakes.

[woman] Here you are.

[knife scraping]

[Akuma grunting]

[Akuma] They're good.

I'd rank them the 18th finest I've had.

Was that supposed to be a compliment?

That's high praise from him.

Oh. A stack of four

is quite a generous feast.

She may not look it,

but Hina has a healthy appetite.

[Hina grunting] Mother.

[woman chuckling]

[woman] I don't believe

I got your names, gentlemen.

Oh. This is Ichiro Umoregi.

He goes by the name Akuma Kun.

- And this polite young man is

- [Mephisto III clearing throat]

Ah. Yes.

I am Mephistopheles the Third.

[bell dinging]

Thanks.

[Akuma] And you're Yuko Asanagi,

aren't you?

A professor of European History.

I saw your book in your living room.

Oh. I'm flattered that you know my work.

[Akuma] Lives and Sins of Kings,

such a dull read.

You've read my book?

Perhaps it was a little too difficult

for you to understand.

I found your interpretation of the

medieval monarchy to be far too banal.

[Yuko] Banal?

I'm not sure I know what you mean.

Let's use Frederick the Wise

as an example.

The way you addressed it in your book,

his collection of holy relics

was seemingly--

Um, Mother, could we get privacy please?

You don't want me to explain my position?

You do realize that's not why

I asked you to come over.

Well, I suppose I'll leave you kids

to whatever it is you're doing.

Feel free to make yourselves at home.

- [door closing]

- [rain pattering]

Now that my brain has

its much-needed sugar,

I'm ready to hear your story.

[Hina sighing]

I discovered something

when I attended my friends' funerals.

All five people passed away

at 2:23 in the morning, three days ago.

They each died in various ways.

Not one of them the same.

Some went to other universities.

One had just graduated.

[tense music playing]

Maybe it's a coincidence

they all died at the same time.

[Mephisto III] Uh, that seems unlikely.

At any rate,

this needs to be thoroughly investigated.

Now then, in regard to our payment

[ethereal music playing]

[otherworldly groaning]

[Akuma] Hmm.

[suspenseful music playing]

What is it?

[chair clattering]

[Hina] Hmm?

Uh

- Out of the way.

- [Hina] Uh, right.

[suspenseful music swelling]

[music stops]

Uh, did you find something?

[Akuma] That's interesting.

[Mephisto III] What is?

I don't see anything.

[Akuma] Looks like we found ourselves

quite a savory case.

Here you go. Keep it.

Sure.

Relax. We'll figure this out.

[Mephisto III] We haven't agreed

on payment. You can't say--

[Akuma] Say "bye."

[Mephisto III] See you soon, Hina.

[Hina snoring softly]

[objects rustling]

[ominous music playing]

[Hina groaning]

It's 21 minutes after 2:00 a.m.

- [objects rustling]

- [Hina gasping]

- [sinister music crescendos]

- [Hina panting]

[creature muttering, exclaiming]

This can't be happening!

[Hina whimpering, grunting]

[Hina gasping]

[creature exclaiming loudly]

No!

- [music fades]

- [Hina's breath shuddering]

[ominous music playing]

KAMICHOUFU ODEON CINEMA

[Hina] Uh, are you listening?

[Akuma] Yeah, I hear you.

Well, thankfully it was just a dream.

[Hina] Don't you think it's strange

that it happened at the same time

as everything else?

I mean, I hope it was just a dream,

I really do, but it felt so real.

[Akuma] The maybe it was real.

And if so,

then it would appear someone is trying

to stop us from investigating this case.

Grab a map, Mephisto.

[whimsical music playing]

[Akuma] First, Tatsuki Shiraishi.

Let's pinpoint the location

where Tatsuki Shiraishi was k*lled.

Kamichofu, First district.

- [Akuma] Two-dash-twelve.

- Hey! The table!

[Akuma] Hitomi Sagiura.

Hyuga Nishino.

Sakura Yoshikawa.

Shota Yamamoto.

[Hina] It looks like they form a circle.

Yes. That was my initial thought as well,

but you both are wrong.

- [Mephisto III] A pentagram.

- [Akuma] Indeed.

Pentagrams are usually used as a way

of warding off evil entities and demons.

[Hina] Oh, no.

Care to elaborate?

[Akuma] It shows us that someone is trying

to protect something at the very center.

Oh. But that's

[Akuma] You recognize this place?

[Hina] Yes.

That's the home of Ichika Tsuchiya.

She's one of my friends

from the university.

[dramatic music playing]

[Akuma] Mephisto, can you sense anything?

[Mephisto III] What are you asking me for?

Can you sense an odd energy

that makes your hair stand on end?

For the record,

that's not something I can do.

Hmm. Any relationship

between Ichika Tsuchiya and the victims?

She and Yoshikawa both had the same major,

but, as far as I know,

they only ever saw each other

in the cafeteria.

She's in the same club as Shiraishi, but

But what?

[Hina] There are rumors about that club.

The seedy kind.

And well, Ichika hasn't come

to any of our required classes in days.

I'm worried something might have happened

to her on one of the group outings.

That's why I asked her not to go.

If five university students

were struck down in their prime

to protect this girl Ichika,

I'd say it's almost certain

a demon was involved.

- Research is needed.

- [Mephisto grunting]

Come by the Institute

tomorrow around late afternoon.

We aren't going in?

Hey! Akuma Kun, wait!

What should I do

if the nightmare comes back?

[Akuma] Try pasting that warding symbol

I gave you to your forehead.

[Hina exhaling]

[footsteps approaching]

[Mephisto III] What Hina told us about,

you think it was a dream?

Hardly. I'm sure it was real.

It could have been something like an omen.

I have no idea.

I hope that symbol you gave her

does its job.

Not sure if that would be good or bad.

I guess we'll see.

[ominous music playing]

[Hina snoring softly]

[demon exclaiming]

[demon gasping]

[music fades]

[birds chirping]

I didn't have the nightmare.

[Akuma] Next is Hitomi Sagiura.

They were all from ordinary families.

There's nothing odd about any of them.

So what makes an ordinary family?

Huh? An ordinary family.

You know, there's a mother and a father

and a kid or three,

and they all live together

and try to get along.

So, according to your definition,

single parents and couples

without children

don't count as ordinary families.

No, I--

[Akuma] I bet you consider your family

to be one of the ordinary ones.

[Mephisto III] I don't think that at all.

What about your dad?

Have you seen him recently?

The last time we saw each other

was six months ago.

I had no idea it had been that long.

KAMICHOFU ODEON CINEMA

- [birds squawking]

- [Hina gasping]

[Hina] Oh. I, uh

Akuma Kun isn't here now.

He And Mephisto went out hours ago.

And what's your name?

[girl] Mio. And this is Chusuke.

[Chusuke meowing]

That's a cat?

So, Mio. How do you know Akuma Kun?

Ugh! How could I not know

that idiotic dingleberry?

[Akuma] I believe dingleberry

would be an insult in this context,

but it is a fascinating word.

Oh. It looks like you're back.

You've referred to me as a dingbat before,

but I believe the ding used

in that term is different--

That's enough!

Shut up and pay us what you owe!

All right! You've got it!

We'll pay you. I swear we'll pay.

- [Mio] Pay your rent! Pay your rent!

- [Akuma] Mephisto

That's precisely why we've taken

this young lady's case.

When this job is done, we'll pay up.

You're more than welcome to wait inside

the Millenarianism Research Institute

for your payment.

John Doe would love to see you.

[whimsical evil chuckling]

[Mio grunting]

I'm not going in there.

Oh. How come?

There's no reason for you to be shy.

- [Akuma grunting]

- [Mio grunting]

I can't help

but feel sorry for you, Mephisto.

He doesn't deserve you.

[woman] Mio.

[Mio grunting]

[woman chuckling]

Hi, Sanae.

Now, Mio, remember the little talk we had

where I asked you not to bother Akuma Kun?

I know, but I'm not bothering this dingus.

[Sanae] Dingus?

She's doing a greatest hits

of "ding" insults.

I see, but what does it mean?

I'm not sure. I heard it in a movie.

Aren't you the cleverest little lady?

All right. It's time to go home. Bye.

- [Sanae chuckling]

- [Mio] Ugh!

Listen, Mom, you're way too nice.

What a sweet woman.

She seems so tenderhearted and warm.

I know, right?

Sanae is the best. I really respect her.

It takes a lot to run the Odeon Cinema

and raise a girl by herself.

ICHIKA TSUCHIYA

Uh, that club you told us Ichika

and Tatsuki Shiraishi had been a part of.

Turns out the nasty rumors were true.

[Hina] I'd hoped I was wrong.

[Akuma] Typical scumbag methodology.

- First, they--

- [Mephisto III] She doesn't need details.

Really? Well, anyway, my point is that

they aren't original with their methods.

It's my fault.

I should've tried harder to stop her.

My research lead to a few discoveries.

Like the fact that Hyuga Nishino was in

the same club at a different university,

and that Shota Yamamoto

was a close friend of his.

Hitomi Sagiura's role in the scheme was

to get the target to let their guard down.

[tense music playing]

[Akuma] If she'd fallen victim

to their predations,

it wouldn't be a surprise

if she wanted the people behind it dead,

or started thinking about death herself.

Ichiro. I think that's enough for today.

Why? There's more to say.

Use common sense.

[Hina] It's all right, Mephisto.

It's just that Tsuchiya is also

an acquaintance of Yoshikawa.

I can't stop thinking about that.

She's connected

to all five of the deceased.

[woman] Ichika. She's been hiding

up in her room for a while now.

[Hina] Can I see her?

[woman] Uh, sure. She may want to see you.

Just be careful, okay?

[Hina] Huh?

[woman] I hate to say this,

because it makes me think

I'm not a good mother,

but the last few days,

she's been frightening me.

Um, Ichika? It's me Hina. Can I come in?

[demon exclaiming]

Listen to that.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

- [ominous music playing]

- [demon exclaiming]

[Hina] Ichika! Please, just answer me!

[Ichika weakly] Hina.

[Hina's breath shuddering]

[Hina] Ichika, I'm going to open the door.

[Hina gasping]

Wait, Hina. We have to be careful.

[intense suspenseful music playing]

Stand back.

What in the world is happening in there?

Not sure. What now, Akuma Kun?

[door creaking]

[Hina shuddering]

[scribbling]

[Mephisto III grunting]

[Mephisto III groaning]

[scribbling continues]

[Mephisto III groaning]

Hi there.

You must be Ichika.

- Is she okay?

- [Mephisto III] Don't come in.

- [Ichika growling]

- [Mephisto III gasping]

[Mephisto III yelping]

Run! Move it!

This is looking bad, Akuma Kun!

[Ichika exclaiming]

So be it! Supernatural lightning sho--

Elohim Essaim. Elohim Essaim.

I entreat thee to heed my call

and bestow Potestate Diaboli unto thee!

- [intense music playing]

- [Ichika yelling, screaming]

[Ichika exclaiming]

[Mephisto III] Uh-oh!

This spell seems to have had some effect.

All right! Absolute Zero Freeze!

[Ichika groaning]

[Ichika yelling]

That did it.

Can I say one thing?

- [Mephisto III] What?

- [Akuma] It can't be absolute zero.

[Mephisto III] Oh, shut up! It's fine!

Seriously?

Absolute zero is impossible.

[Ichika exclaiming]

- Look out!

- [Akuma] What is it? Hey!

[Mephisto III grunting]

[Akuma grunting]

[Mephisto III] Dang it.

[Ichika screeching]

[Ichika yelling]

[Ichika yelling]

[music stops]

[Mephisto III gasping]

[dramatic music playing]

[music fades]

[ending theme music playing]

[inaudible]

[song fades]
