01x01 - ba*ls Deep

[dreamy music plays]

The search for love
in the age of social media

and dating apps is broken.

We judge people quickly
and discard people easily

based on only
the most superficial information.

What do you look like?

What car do you drive?

Are you down to hook up tonight?

And with unlimited options,

it's never been harder to form
a genuine connection.

So what if we take all that away?

What happens when a group of single
people commit

to choosing a partner in a trailblazing
new relationship experience

without any idea
what he or she looks like?

Oh, God.

What am I doing?

Six bold singles have each
been matched

with two suitors in the hopes of finding
a life changing connection.

Each single will communicate
with their matches via texts and calls

but they cannot share pictures
or physically describe themselves.

After three days of chat, they must make
a choice between the two.

Who do they want to meet
and start a real-world relationship with?

And what happens when the person
they've chosen,

sight unseen, appears in the real world?

I don't know what she looks like

but I really think I could fall for her

which is probably something
dangerous to do.

This is completely insane.

I'm here to potentially meet the person

that I could spend the rest
of my life with.

Hello.

-Hello.
-Hello.

I've waited for this almost ten years.

I've tried my best on the dating apps.

They don't work
so I'm here to change everything.

Lisa?

Honestly didn't expect you to be
so beautiful.

[laughter]

Do I look like what you thought I would
or very different?

Very different.

If I saw him on a dating app,
I would swipe left.

Can I just jump in the water?
And just disappear?

And that's just the beginning
of an intense six-week experience...

Close your eyes.

I want to give us as good a shot
as possible.

...which will see six new couples
moving in together...

This is insane.

It just feels so natural.
I've never been tested like this before.

I don't know where we're at.

I was hoping that I was wrong about you.

I can't win w... I can't win.

If you could switch your match again
at the click of a finger, would you?

...as they attempt to form
lasting relationships.

What we've got is beyond any kind
of expectations that I could have had.

My intention is to be in love with someone
beyond this experience.

If feels that we're meant to be.

But...

[phone chimes]

...this is "Love Triangle".

And triangles...

[phone chimes]

...have three sides...

[phones chime]

What?!

...and this experience...

If I was you,
I would not have given me your phone.

That's not the truth at all.

I'm actually so in shock right now.

...comes with an expl*sive twist...

What do we actually know happened
because I'd like facts?

You're trying to apologise but won't even
admit what everyone else saw.

...set to detonate when an unexpected
third party joins the relationship.

I heard a rumour...

You set me up for this.
You set me up for this.

Oh, my God. Relax.

OK, I'm done.

It's more than a TV show to me.

...and changes everything.

Did you kiss him?

Why can't you trust me?
I'm telling you I'm all in.

Will relationships spark
from personalities alone?

You are such a liar.

If it was that easy to throw away,
it can't have meant that much to you.

Survive in the real world?

You can pack your bags and get the hell
out of here.

Here I am.

Right in front of you.

Saying, "I'm in love with you."

Or will they end up lost
in a love triangle?

Testing, one, two.

OK, rolling.

Surreal. I'm going to be miced up for the
next six weeks.

Yeah.

So weird.

Six Australian singles,
fed up with the superficial,

thank-you-next culture of online dating...

This is Madi's master interview.

...and looking for something
more meaningful

have agreed to take part
in a radical new experience...

OK.

Let's do it.

Whoo! Yes.

...by committing to a process

that eliminates modern dating's
most superficial elements.

Looks are important to me.

I feel I do tend to swipe very quickly
if I don't feel a physical attraction.

He's got tattoos, swipe left.
You know, he's got a beard, swipe left.

He doesn't have blue eyes, swipe left.

The thing I hate about the apps is

it's basically built on,
kind of like a lie.

People are putting Photoshopped photos
and filters

and writing things that they think people
want to hear.

I feel like when times get tough,
we give up quite easily

because it's just so easy
and tempting to find another...

To find the next best thing.

That's why I am putting myself out here
now and taking a chance with this.

The first stage
of the love triangle experience

as a three-day window in which each single
will communicate

with their matches via texting

and calls without access to pictures,

descriptions or visual cues of any kind.

It's strange.

It's pretty scary.

So much anxiety. Almost crippling
and I don't usually get like that.

I'm excited by the opportunity to build
a connection with someone

when I don't know what they look like
and they don't know what I look like.

I know what I'm looking for
and it's a connection with someone

and it's not just about the looks.

It's that emotional connection

that I desperately want.

Today, the first three singles...

Do girls do pickup lines?

Yeah, if you wanna.

I can be cheesy but not at the start.

...will enter the experience and get
to know their matches...

[phone chimes]

...via text.

It begins.

They have just three days to discover
a connection and make a decision

about who they'd like to join them in
Sydney for the Love Triangle experience.

I'm good to talk out loud by myself? Yup?

[laughs]

I rely on my physical appearance a lot
of the time to meet men.

That's one thing that I do
that I shouldn't

and that's what gets me in
a lot of trouble.

You know the kind of trouble.

[laughs]

Where it's boom, bang, thank you, ma'am
kind of trouble.

And that's not what I want and that's not
what I'm looking for

but, for some reason,
I vibe that on a dating app.

I have even people sliding into my DMs,
you know, just asking for it.

And it sucks.

[laughs]

These are quite cool too, Mum.

I'm from Perth.
I'm an accounts payable officer

and I live with my mum.

Who do you vision in my life for a man?

We will chat literally about anything.

Blue eyes.

Yeah. What else?

Tall, dark and handsome.

There is nothing off limits.

Especially when it comes to dating,
boyfriends, sex.

How about this one, Lisa? Look at it.
It's beautiful.

It's a bit phallic, Mum.

We will talk about that.

Especially down to the nitty-gritty,
if you know what I'm saying.

[laughs]

Beautiful.

It is beautiful though, Mum.

One time, she came home with a bag
of sex crystals

and she goes, "Because you need
a boyfriend in your life."

So now I've been carrying these crystals
around everywhere I go.

I'm vibing this one carnelian, passion,
sexuality and creativity.

But I mean... I still don't have anyone!

Can't reel them in.

Where are they at?

I love you, ladies.

-Cheers.
-Cheers.

I'm 32. I've been single for ten years
and the one thing

I want in this world is for me to start
having kids.

So, yeah.

We're not dating any more. We are
auditioning for a husband. Yeah.

And that's what I'm here for.

I mean...

Put some sperm in me and knock me up!

Yeah...

In Perth, 32-year-old Lisa has been
matched with Matt,

a 32-year-old rail worker

and Patrick, a 31-year-old podcaster.

Ooh, Matty and Patty.

It's up to her to kick off
the conversation

by sending the same message
to both her matches.

I would say I'm not into small talk.

I don't want to know what your favourite
day of the week is.

I want to be talking about crazy things

like parallel universes
and the Mandela Effect.

Keeping the spark there and being a bit
cheeky and playful.

Ask what I'm wearing?

Oh, my God. What am I going to say?

Oh, damn.

[keys click]

Ah!

Ooh, dots! Ooh.

Hello, Matt!

[laughs]

This guy is cute! And funny!

What would I like to know about Matt?

I feel like I've got to that stage in my
life

where I have become the person
I want to be.

I want to meet that special person.

I want kids.
I want that ultimate connection.

I want that person that I feel so
strongly about and our lives connect.

Meeting someone during this experience
and them being the one,

that would be the most amazing thing ever.

As much as I love pumping tunes in my
old car and singing,

it would be awesome to do
duets with someone.

This is my type of guy!

I feel like he's got his head screwed
on straight.

I feel like this guy has
his sh*t together.

And that's what I'm vibing off Matt.

Patty!

"Here's everything you need to know,
winky face."

Ooh. I like this guy.

Dating me is like a rollercoaster.

I'm never a boring time.
I'm always on the go.

I don't get to stop and smell the roses.

Business, working, training, vlogging,
punching people in the face.

I've worked really hard to get where I am

and where I am in my life,

I'm genuinely looking for something
a bit more than just a date.

Sex is super important to me.

Usually I'm the dominant one
and I do love being in control

but I also know
when it's time to let go of control.

Patrick's so naughty!

Oh, my God.

Patrick...

[gasps]

Haven't we all?

Does that mean... Oh, I can't...!

I shouldn't be...
Going straight into the sexting.

Oh, my goodness. OK.

Screw it.

Let's see how open-minded he is.

Ooh.

If you know, you know.

Oh, God.
This is what gets me into trouble.

This is what gets me into trouble.

I definitely like a naughty boy

but I want something long term

so I don't know if this is going to be me
playing with fire.

And I'm going to get burned.

I would probably say I'd be defined
as a serial monogamist.

I've always been in relationships
since I was about 16 years old.

Longest relationship was my last one
which was ten years.

Married for nearly five of those.

I always thought, you know,
once you're married, that's it.

So, when she decided to leave,
my heart was broken.

It's kind of like the biggest rejection
you could kind of have.

You know, your best friend,
the person you're in love with.

Um, you know, your wife.

The someone you're supposed to spend
the rest of your life with

kind of saying "You're not it for me",

It's...

It's one of the most painful things
I think

anyone could probably ever go through.

And, yeah.

It took a lot for me to get
my mental state better

and now I'm in a really good
position in my life.

I live in a house that I own
and I work in technology sales.

I've got the great life and family
and friends

but I don't have a partner to share
it all with.

It was pretty good.

I hadn't been single pretty much my entire
adult life

so I've sort of just come into this world
completely fresh

and, having my own dating profile

and having people judge me based
on just a picture and a couple of words,

it's pretty full on
and pretty intimidating.

I haven't really connected with anyone
I suppose in a little while.

A few fun dates but nothing too fruitful
so...

I'm very ready to be loved again.

There's no better feeling in the world

than loving someone and having
that reciprocated.

I'm just really excited to meet someone
to share my life with.

In Melbourne,

30-year-old Alex has been matched
with Beck,

a 28-year-old model and Madison

a 26-year-old business owner.

I've got names.

And now it's up to him to initiate
the chat.

You only get one chance to make
a good first impression.

Ooh, it begins.

Got a message from Bec.

Oh, that's a very nice message.

Someone with emotional intelligence,
someone kindhearted and warm.

I meet lots of interesting people
in my job.

I've been modelling for about seven years.

A model?

Could be a foot model though.
You never know.

Could be any type of model.

My modelling shoots range from fashion
to bikini to lingerie.

People assume that because
of my looks

and my career as a model that I don't have
trouble finding love.

It's actually the opposite.

I don't know if someone's just dating me
for my looks

or if they want to have
a genuine connection.

I will say this, Bec has intrigued me.

Like now I'm thinking...

She's got me on the hook
a little bit there.

Oh, from Madison this time.

Right, we've got both now.

Amazing.

Quadruple message. Lots of messages now.

When it rains, it pours.

Wow.

[laughs]

Running your own business has definitely
got its downfalls for sure.

Your time, your stress.

You have to make so many sacrifices
but I wouldn't change it.

I can't do the whole chill. I need
something happening all the time.

I don't settle
and I'm not going to settle.

I'm definitely passionate, I'm driven.

I have no filter. If I don't like you,
you'll probably know about it.

Very interesting message.

[laughs]

So I've started to build a little bit in
my head

of what these girls might look like
and who they are.

Obviously knowing Bec's a model, those
sort of thoughts going through my mind.

Knowing that Madison is a business owner
and sassy.

That starts to build a different picture
as well so trying not to but, yeah,

it's starting to build a little bit
of a picture.

Modern dating... My gosh.

It's so different
to my parents' generation.

I feel like nowadays, with the apps,
technology and social media,

it's a lot harder to find love

because it's just so easy to find
the next best thing.

I primarily have dated Asians.

Only because we are quite
culturally similar.

But also I've also had this fear
or the sense

that non-Asian guys
don't find me attractive.

I used to wish that I was white
or a different race.

It starts to get to you a little bit.

Yeah.

Because I know I'm going to
be a fun time

but physically, I don't know whether
he'll be physically attracted to me.

On Instagram and social media, you see a
tall Australian or white guy hand-in-hand

with a very hot blonde and you start
to question, well, I don't look like that.

I don't have blonde hair, blue eyes.

I do have those insecurities
and so I project it onto the other person.

I don't know, I feel like I always go
for the same type

you know like Asian, funny guy.

That's why I'm here.
I want to be able to change that pattern.

I want to know whether just forgetting
about ethnicity and race will help me

just find a genuine love.

[phone chimes]

Wait, wait, wait. I got a message.

Oh, my gosh.

Denny and Ben.

This sh*t just got real.

Also in Melbourne, 28-year-old Ly has
been matched

with Ben a 32-year-old builder

and Danny, a 31-year-old
events entrepreneur.

What do people ask these days?

I've been texting two guys.

Feeling a little bit like a player
but I've got to do what I've got to do.

I don't want to overthink it.
I just wanna...

Yeah, just don't overthink it.

All right.

Let's go for a walk.

[phone chimes]

Oh, dang.

[reads]

Wait, hold up.
I'm just going to reply to him.

What?!

He's from Melbourne?

I wonder what he does for work.

Yeah, I wonder.

Before that, I was in a band.
We had an awesome ride.

We signed a record deal with universal
Music Australia,

toured with The Vamps, Demi Lovato.

We had a song on mainstream radio.

It was an absolute blast. Some of the best
memories with my best mates.

Ooh. Very cool.

[phone chimes]

Oh, my God.
I just got a text from the other guy.

OK.

[reads]

[laughter]

He's funny!

He's funny.

It's totally a vibe.

Yeah, I'm actually vibing with this guy.

Yeah.

Oh, my God.

If you define a catch as someone
who owns their own house,

runs their own business,
has a beautiful dog

then I guess you'd define me as a catch

and I'm funny.

I think I'm funny.

[laughs]

I feel like I've vibed really well
with Danny.

So really funny, yeah.

He's definitely... I don't know.
He's got this energy about him.

Danny...

He wants to know what the most
embarrassing thing

in my Spotify playlist is.

Oh, my God.

Wait... Wait, what?

He can speak Vietnamese.

Oh, sh**t.

I think... OK, this is like
a big giveaway.

What?

Oh, my gosh.

No. No way he's actually Vietnamese.
Is he actually?

I've always been going for similar men
as Danny.

Someone who is culturally similar
and who I can have good banter with.

Then Ben, the Ben name just screams out...

I don't know. Like a tall Australian guy.

I'm picturing the surfer kind of look.

The long, blonde hair so it's like,

do I go for something familiar
or do I choose Ben?

Yeah.

I don't know.

As Ly begins to imagine her suitors,

Alex is yet to reveal an important part
of himself

to Queensland model Bec

and retail owner Madison.

The one thing I haven't told them is that
I was previously married.

Which I think is a really important thing
to say

and put all the cards on the table
for both of them.

In my head, someone who's been married
and divorced like it's something that's...

...could mean damaged goods.

It could mean, you know, a lot of things

so there might be a fair few questions
that come from that.

Bec's response was quite positive.

Hmm.

So Madison read my messages.

OK, she's having a think.

Look, it makes me feel
a little bit nervous

but it's something that sort of had
to come out eventually anyway

so I'm glad that she knows it now.

[phone chimes]

Oh, Madison.

[reads]

Madison doesn't seem so...

...happy with the marriage thing.

Madison might be a bit concerned
about my marriage.

I'm getting a phone call from Madison.

Am I allowed to answer that?

Getting a call.

OK.

Hello.

Hi, Alex. It's Maddie.
How are you going?

Hey, good. Yourself?

Yeah, good, thank you.
How are you feeling?

Uh, a bit stressed, a bit nervous.

But, yeah, no, it's been a really full-on
process as you'd know.

Yup, so how long were you married for?

Five years. So quite a long while.

Married five years? Yup.

Together for nearly ten.

And you've been single for 18 months,
yeah?

Yeah, a year and a bit.
Nearly 18 months, yeah.

It's probably only been the last...

Three to six months

that I've really been
in a really great headspace

and completely ready to find someone
and fall in love again to be honest,

if I'm being completely transparent.

Yeah, OK.

I have a better understanding
of what I want

and what I'm looking for

and, over text, you're ticking a lot
of those boxes so far so, good job.

Oh, thanks.

That's nice to know.

It's just really nice to finally talk
to you. It's really great. It's so weird.

We've been talking to this phone
for so long.

It's very nerve wracking, especially when
I don't even know what you look like.

Yeah, yeah.

It's really nice to hear your voice.

Yeah, you too. You too.

And yeah, hopefully I'll speak
to you soon.

Hopefully, all right. Thanks, Alex.

Thanks, Madison.

-Bye.
-Bye.

After that phone call,
I'm straight away more interested.

Madison had a few questions about
the marriage which is fair enough.

But really liked her voice and just being
able to put a voice to a screen

because that's all it's been at this point
and a name..

made it feel a lot more real.

[phone chimes]

Matt.

I think that everything that's happened in
life has made me the person right now

and who I am right now is exactly
the person I want to be.

Hmm. He knows what he wants in life.

It's been a long day of texting
both of them

and, oh, my head is like
exploding at this point.

My view's with Matt,

I am still vibing that he is really
digging deep

and telling me who is as a person
which I love.

I feel like he is very Aussie. True blue.
Sweet.

He is the type of guy that I see myself
with long term.

[phone chimes]

[chokes]

So naughty.

So late at night though.

I'm vibing towards more...
Patrick, to be honest.

I just feel like there's something there.

I felt like an instant chemistry
and connection with him.

Send nudes!

[laughs]

Oh-h-h, good Lord.

I want to text him again but I shouldn't.

I don't want it to go into
the sexting part.

It is night time.

My girlfriends told me
"No, don't do that, Lisa. Bad girl."

[laughs]

Yeah. I'm not going to do it.
I'm not going to text him.

I'm just going to leave him now.

Leave him hanging.

Definitely going to wait.

[producer] How are you feeling
this morning?

I am feeling really tired.
I'm not gonna lie.

I only had three hours' sleep. Yeah.

My head was just gone to all different
kinds of places.

I couldn't get you out of my head
last night.

My mind was racing. Yeah.

Hmm.

I tried to do a little bit of meditation

but that didn't work so I tried to slow
down my thoughts by touching myself.

[producer] OK.

And the person that popped into my mind
was obviously Patrick.

Yeah. Yeah, so it was fun.

[reads]

No, I know it's kind of creepy, right?

[laughs]

Patrick.

I thought he must be physically fit
because he's a fighter.

So I'm picturing a guy with muscles.

That's hot but I'm going off that sexual
chemistry and connection there.

That's what I'm feeling.

That's what's amazing - not physically
seeing someone but having that connection.

Yeah, it's mind blowing.

Just like last night.

Having connected with Patrick overnight...

Lisa has decided to make a call
about who she wants to meet

well ahead of the three-day deadline.

Oh, my, God.

[dial tone]

I've been single for ten years and I'm
at that level where I know what I want.

I don't have time to waste
and there's that saying trust your gut.

[dial tone]

Hello, Lisa.

Hi, Patty. I've nicknamed you
that by the way.

Patty, whoa.

OK. When did I say you could call me
Patty?

You might have to get used to it.

Are you telling me some good news?

Well, yeah, the stars have aligned

and I would love to move in with you
next week

and meet you in person

and go on our dates and
have fun and see where it goes from there.

Lisa...

Pat. Patty.

[laughter]

I'm excited and I love that you came
to this decision.

I think I could definitely fall for Pat.

Absolutely. Yeah.

I'm speechless.

Yeah, well, I have that effect on people.

I hope that when Pat enters the room
on our first date,

that he has a charismatic smile.

I'm not going to lie. I am looking for
that blond hair, blue-eyed type of guy.

That's what I'm manifesting -
the man of my dreams.

All right, take care. Bye.

Bye.

That was nice.

I loved that. Yeah.

I'm so excited.
Like it's finally happening.

[gasps]

Having made a decision ending ten years
of single life,

Lisa and Patrick will now meet on the most
important blind date of their lives.

I can't believe I've never seen a photo
of Patrick and I'm about to meet him.

Oh, my God. What have I got myself into?!

I'm not going to lie,

I am looking for that blonde hair,
blue eyes true blue ocker Aussie boy.

The reason why I chose to meet
with Patrick instead of Matt

was because I felt like there was
a lot of sexual chemistry between us.

If Patrick doesn't end up being the person

I thought he was,
I would really be disappointed.

Hello, my dear.

Hi, how are you?

Very good. Yourself?

Good.

He might have this great personality
via text.

I just really hope he is
who I think he is.

Because it's just been a very long time...

being single.

I look around at everyone else,
I'm like, when is it my turn?

I feel like every year that passes,
it's when is the time going to come

for me to meet the man of my dreams?

-Hi.
-Hello.

-Patrick?
-Lisa?

-How are you going?
-Nice to meet you. Good.

-How are you?
-Nice to meet you. I'm well.

-How are you?
-That's good. I'm good.

That's good.

-You didn't break a leg.
-I did not break a leg.

-You did not break a leg.
-You look amazing.

-Thank you.
-I love the outfit.

-Do you like it?
-Yes.

-You look great too.
-Love the yellow.

Would you like a drink, by the way?

I would love an espresso martini please.

Absolutely.

My first impressions of Patrick...

Not my usual type.

If I saw him on a dating app,
I would swipe left.

I'm not going to lie.

I like your chain on your neck.

I like yours.

Thank you, my mum bought it for me
to manifest love.

-Manifest love.
-Manifest love.

Me and your mum are gonna get along.

But I'm putting that aside.
That's not what I'm here for.

I'm here for a deeper connection.
It's not about looks.

So I hope that we can have
that same connection

and chemistry and banter
to him physically being in person.

I would love for you to really open up
and be vulnerable with me tonight.

Do you want a hug or something? What...

No, I'm just curious to know...

Hold on. I'll do the meditation first.
Give me one second.

OK, hit me.

So I would love to know
how deep you can go?

So I would love to go really deep.

It's really early. Jesus.

Really deep and it's really early.
Yeah, yeah.

We are going straight for the k*ll
because I don't got time to wait.

So...we will be living together.

Does that scare you?

I live a very certain way.

Mm-hmm.

And that's going to take some time
for someone to adjust to.

What's your certain ways?

For example, we're living,
we're enjoying our...

...little lifestyle, little dog
and then boom, we're travelling.

We got work to do. We're overseas.

I do a lot of content creation

so that requires being in really cool
places, taking good photos.

I might be fighting.
I might be overseas fighting.

It's boxing, right?

And you travel around the world to do it?

No, I don't but one day, I might.

Because that's where you want to head?

I love fighting. It's primal.

We start sleeping
and then boom, boom, boom.

Four o'clock in the morning,
bad guys round there.

Mm-hmm.

Someone's got to slay that dragon.

OK, cool.

What is it like for you on a typical week?

Not at home!

You're not at home?

I'm not at home on the weekends.

So what are you doing?

Most of the time, I'm out slaying things.
I don't watch any TV series.

I'm very productive. I love success,
I love business. Anything entrepreneurial.

I would rather watch a TED talk. The thing
with me, I can't fake sh*t.

I don't want to watch "Sex and the City".

I don't want to watch
"Desperate Housewives".

You understand what I'm saying..
Things need to get done.

Yup, got you.

Got to slay the beasts.

I think the sexual chemistry with Patrick,
now that we've met...

is not as strong as what it was
via messaging

and I feel like taking a step back
because some of the comments he's made

has closed me off a little bit
because it did turn me off.

I believe in being the best version of me
at all times.

Yup.

I have this philosophy, right.

I'd rather be a warrior in a garden
than a gardener in a w*r.

I feel like the vibe isn't there
and there is a part of me that thinks

what it would have been like with Matt
sitting on the opposite side of the table.

At this point in time, if I wasn't moving
in with him tomorrow, uh...

I probably wouldn't give him
a second date.

Yeah.

Mmm!

Back in Melbourne, Ly still has until
the end of the day to make her decision

between Ben, a 32-year-old builder
and Danny, a 31-year-old entrepreneur

who she suspects is Vietnamese.

I felt like I vibed with Danny the most
straight off the bat.

I feel like we get along really well.

But I've met a lot of Dannys before.

That's the thing.

That's one thing about me that,
when it comes to dating relationships.

I tend to go for the same guy
because I'm not sure what I want.

And I'm 28 and I still don't know
what I want.

[sniffs]

Not just with this experience,
with everything in my dating life.

Sorry.

I feel like I need to challenge myself.

And I feel like if I challenge myself,

I think Ben would be the better person
to do it with.

Sorry.

I'm just getting scared.

Because I've always had a sense

that non-Asian guys
don't find me attractive.

Ohh...

That's probably my biggest insecurity.

Since I was a little girl,

and I don't put myself out there if I feel
there's a chance I'll be rejected.

I think I'm going to pick...
Danny actually.

[dial tone]

"The person you are calling is
not available."

He didn't pick up.

[sighs]

[dial tone]

[voice breaking] Oh, I don't know.

I feel like I need to be brave.

[dial tone]

Like I want to walk away feeling
a lot more stronger...

...in myself. [sighs]

Yeah.

[dial tone]

Hello.

Hello, Ben speaking.

Hi, Ben. It's Ly.

Hi, Ly. How are you?

Oh, my gosh.
Nice to hear what you sound like.

Oh, thank you. You sound lovely too.

Are you in the middle of something?

No, I'm right now having a c*ck
with a few of my friends.

Having some fun. I can walk out.
It's all good.

Um...

[whispering] Oh, f*ck.

What's happening over there?
Where are you?

I had a really... Oh, intense day.

Yeah, very intense, I'm sure.

But, Ben...

Hi.

I'm choosing you
to go on this experience with.

Oh, no way, Ly.

That's awesome.

I don't know what you look like.
You don't know what I look like.

I don't know whether you'll be attracted
to me.

I don't know what's going to happen.

Well, we'll take a dive
into this together,

not knowing all that much about each other
and especially what we look like,

where we come from..

OK.

I can't wait to see you.

Sounds good.

I bet you got a great smile on you.

Oh.

I look forward to putting a face
to the name.

Oh, thanks, Ben.

All right, thanks for the call, Ly.

All right, enjoy yourself then. OK. Bye.

Take care. Take care. See you later, bye.

I chose Ben.

When I called Danny,

I was probably going
to pick him but he didn't pick up so...

Timing. [laughs]

Hopefully he has a very kind smile.

I'm still picturing a surfy kind
of look. Blonde hair.

Blue, hazel eyes.

Yeah.

I don't know. Not sure.
We are going for a surprise.

Recently divorced Alex is the last
of our singles

to make his decision between Queensland
model Bec and retail owner Madison.

I'm not in this experience to stuff
around. I want to find someone.

I want to fall in love, I want to build
a life and a relationship with someone.

I don't want to think about the physical
too much

but obviously knowing Bec's a model,
it means she has kind of like an X Factor.

It's the only sort
of physical characteristic

that I understand about either of them.

[dial tone]

Madison, on the other hand,
I have no idea what she looks like.

So there's still an element of uncertainty
and anxiety.

My next relationship,
I want to be my last.

So I don't want to blow the opportunity
of being with someone amazing.

Hello?

Madison?

How are you?

[laughs]
Nervous, stressed, all the above.

Yeah, for sure!

But I'm going to be honest,

the last few days,

I've absolutely loved getting to know you
and honestly,

I would love to see
where it goes with you

and, yeah, you're the one
that I've chosen to continue this on with.

Really? Oh, my God. OK.

Yeah.

[laughter]

How do you feel? Are you happy?

I don't want to sound...Too forward
but yeah, I'm very excited.

Cool, awesome. No, that's so good.
It's good to hear.

I'm excited to see you and am excited
to see what you look like.

I don't really want to have
any expectations.

At least I know you've got a very
attractive voice.

That's good. Yeah.

So I am very intrigued.

Yeah, me too.

I can't take the smile off my face
to be honest.

Yeah, either.

Now, this is going to be...

I think this is going to be a lot of fun
and, yeah, let's, let's go for a ride.

I reckon. Let's do it.

There is obviously two different types
of attraction.

One is that lightning bolt, see them,
oh-my-goodness, crazy feeling.

Then there's the other one like over time,
that attraction builds.

Whether I get that lightning bolt or not,

it's hard to say
but I'm not banking on it.

Obviously, this is a little bit different
to a standard first date.

Not knowing what she looks like.

If me and Madison meet
and there is no flirtation,

there's no attraction,
I'll be a bit bummed.

I will.

Madison and I,
we connected on a nonphysical level.

It was something that was completely out
of the realm of the standard dating world

but of course, I hope I feel attracted
to her and she feels attracted to me.

-Hey.
-How are you?

Good, you?

Good, thank you.

-Nice to finally meet you.
-Likewise.

-How are you going?
-Yeah, good.

Grab a seat.

We are finally here though.

I know. I know. It's been a little...

Little time coming I suppose.

Yes. How are you feeling?

You look amazing.

-Thank you, so do you.
-Yeah, thanks.

Yeah, I'm nervous. I'm not going to lie.

Yup.

I honestly didn't expect you to be
so beautiful.

It's just been like...
If I'm being completely honest.

I didn't expect you to be so amazing.

I'm shaking a little bit.

At least we are both in the same boat
which is amazing.

Yeah.

Madison is just...

Wow. No, no. She is... She is stunning.

I've only ever felt that lightning bolt
a few times in my life

so, yes, very nice surprise.

[laughs]
I am. I am happy.

Yeah, wow. Sorry.

It was a lightning bolt moment for me.
Hopefully Madison's feeling the same way.

Yeah, I know.
First impressions is like holy sh*t.

Yeah, big time. Big time.

Alex is so hot. [laughs]

Like a ten out of ten hot.

Maybe just here.

There's definitely a vibe.
Like an energy happening. Sure.

Love at first sight energy. Maybe.

[sighs]

How does it feel?

Yeah, been texting for a little while now
and now that we're here... Yup.

I'm excited.

-Yeah, same.
-Sort of a nervous energy.

-Yeah.
-No, it's good.

But now I can finally ask,
you said country girl, right?

Yeah.

You were like, "Not like full sticks."

No, no, no.

More just small town?

-Mildura.
-Mildura?!

Do you know Mildura?

Course, yeah, yeah.

The river.

Five years ago, I moved towards Melbourne.

Yeah, what suburb do you live in?

I live like south Melbourne in Carrum
Downs.

Mornington.

Wow. Gee, that is so close.

If I saw Madison on a dating app,
I would super like whatever that is.

Up, right, I would be going 100%. Yes.

She has exceeded my expectations.

We have, like...

today to get to know each other and stuff.

Yup.

Where's your head at in terms of...

We're moving in together soon.

You know what I mean?
It's quite a daunting thing.

I've obviously been single for three years

but ever since I was 14,
I've always had a boyfriend.

Can ask you a bit of a weird question
then?

Yeah.

Not too weird but have you been in love?

-I don't think I have.
-Yup.

I don't think I've been in love
where it's been a reciprocated thing.

Sure.

I've had relationships but I can only say
I've been in love with my ex.

Yup.

And it's an amazing
thing and it's something

that I want to feel again
because it is just...

It's weird and it's corny but it's every
rom-com, and it's every song you hear.

It is that...
So did you end it or was it a mutual...

No, she did.

Um...

And at the time, was heartbroken.

Yeah, wow.

100% heartbroken. It kind of like...

I guess, wasn't expecting it.

How long have you been single for?

15, 16 months. Something like that.

Yeah, so it's not really that long.

No, it isn't. No, it isn't. But I feel
like it's been longer than that.

So how do you feel about it?

It's something that...

It's something that I wanted to make sure
that I was done with

but also it's just not something
that's healthy.

Has she moved on?

She has, yup.

-OK.
-Yup.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Um, previously, I've been through really
crappy times and...

...I have this...

bad track record of guys cheating on me
with an ex.

It's happened to me twice.

Wow.

So that's a little bit of an insecurity
for me.

Of course.

Like an ex being around in the picture.
That's one thing to me that does upset me.

Yup.

I mean, first of all, I'm sorry that's
happened to you. That's really sh*t.

But, to reassure you a bit,

it was just like we were, honestly,
best mates.

There was no romantic side to it any more.

It was easy so we just ran with it.

Complacent.

Very good word. That's exactly the word.

-Yup.
-I don't want that.

No.

I want to really enjoy spending time with
someone and have those common interests.

Yeah.

I'm now at a point where I'm, not only
comfortable with who I am, but ready.

Yeah, that's the same as me.

Yeah, good. Great..

That's nice to hear.

-Good.
-Yup.

OK.

I've had such a good time.

Same. Me too.

Um... I can't wait to spend more time
with you.

Me too.

Don't worry about this. I'll leave that.
But, yeah, it's been really nice.

I kind of wish it didn't have to end.

Me too.

But, yeah, I'll definitely see you soon.

Yes, for sure.

-See you.
-See you.

I think it might blossom into something.
I'm feeling pretty positive.

Obviously first dates are always like you
leave and you're like

I wonder how they are feeling
but I'm happy.

I might have rose-tinted glasses
at the moment

but so far, everything's been
pretty amazing.

it sounds weird because we've just
met today

and usually I probably wouldn't
feel a connection as quickly but I do.

Like pretty much ticks every box I can
possibly think of

but my only worry at this point is that,

the moment I started talking about my
ex, Madison's face dropped a little bit.

She was a little bit more closed off.

But, you know,
if I'm being completely honest,

if that's the worst of Madison then she is
absolutely perfect in my eyes.

I couldn't have picked anyone better.

[whispering] Should have kissed her.

I feel like there's a little bit of weight
on my shoulders

on this date because I don't know
what he looks like.

He doesn't know what I look like and...

It's a little bit nerve wracking.

I picked Ben because of the social
and emotional connection

we had through the texts.

This is really happening.

Getting to know him through this process,

I can see that he is
emotionally available.

He's ready and I love that.

For some reason, I picture him like a tall
Australian male.

A surfy kind of look.

The long hair. Either brown or blonde
hair, blue eyes.

It's kind of like the energy
he's coming across so far.

Oh, my God.

Oh...

Thought that was Ben.
[laughs]

Oh, my gosh.

I am freaking out.

Where is he?

Oh, my God. I think that's him.

Is that him?

[laughs]
Is that... Is that Ben?

Would I be guessing that you are Ly?

Is that Ben?

I'm Ben, yeah.

Oh, my gosh. Hi, Ben.

Lovely to meet you. How are you?

Nice to meet you.

Oh, my God. You have orange hair.

No worries, yeah.

[laughs]

OK, cool. Well...

Did you think I was Asian?

I did think you were Asian.

Well, I kind of had an inkling.

Did you? My name, right?

L-Y.

Yeah. But I wasn't sure.

How are you feeling
about this whole experience?

I had no idea what to expect.

I... Same.

I didn't know what to expect either.

[laughs]

He's got orange hair.

[laughs]

In a nice way of course. I like his suit.

He wasn't too crazily tall, thank God.

Which is all right but is still tall.
I mean everyone is taller than me.

But different to what I expected I guess.

His voice was the same but, yeah.

Are you thirsty?
Do you want to go for a drink?

-Yeah, I'm thirsty.
-Something to eat?

Yeah. Let's grab a drink.

Let's go.

OK, cool. Let's go.

I don't know.
I guess I didn't feel that excitement.

Mmm.

[laughs]
No regrets at the moment.

I made the decision based on how I felt
at the time so we'll see.

[sighs]

I don't know. I don't know whether I can
go through with this.

I don't know.
It's a bit... It's a bit much.

Oh, I don't... I don't know. I don't know.

It's not what I'm used to.
I'm not used to this.

Definitely not the type that I'd go for.

In the outside world.

It's just the energy.

I just didn't feel it.

I didn't feel the vibe.

Just didn't feel that aah!

Like I want to get to...
I didn't feel that.

I'm just questioning...

I don't know whether I want to do this.

You don't...

This is just stupid.

I don't know.

Yeah, it's just too much.

I want to leave this whole entire thing.
Honestly.

The love triangle experience challenges
its participants

to go beyond first impressions
towards something deeper

and while Ly considers tapping out
altogether...

How would your ex describe you?

Lisa is grappling with disappointment
of her own.

Caring, passionate, fiery,

expressive, focused, independent,
integral.

Negatives?

You don't have any?

Um...

I'm thinking. I'm trying.

The vibe tonight with Patrick and I,
I'm not going to lie,

it felt cold in terms of
the sexual attraction and chemistry.

A part of me is a little bit disappointed

since that's why I chose him
in the first place.

Oh, wouldn't watch TV with me.

Is that what they would find
as a negative in you?

But I'm here for a reason
and that's to find love and the one.

I chose Patrick over Matt
because there was a connection there

and I'm not going
to dismiss that based on a bad first date.

I just really need to trust the process.

You know you didn't look how I thought you
would look.

OK, so how did you think I look?

Um, super white.

Thanks! Jeez, thanks!

Are you Asian?

-I'm half.
-Half what?

Take one guess.

Are you half Filipino?

Yup. You?

I'm Chinese.

-Oh, are you Chinese?
-Yeah.

So different to what I would normally
go for.

What do you usually go for?

I'm not going to lie. Blond hair,
blue eyes, true blue Aussie. Very ocker.

I'm a banana so yellow on the outside,
white on the inside.

Yeah, cool. Banana.

-You like bananas?
-Oh, I love them.

Love bananas.

I love bananas.

-You do?
-I do. I really do.

[laughs]

Where is that going? You going to
show me one day how much you love bananas.

-Serious.
-Serious.

Serious, serious, serious.
Throw me a deep one. OK.

What is your definition of true connection
with a partner?

Someone who is going to be
super understanding.

Someone who is committed to being
there for my kids

and give me the stability I need.

OK, this leads me to my next question.
These are normal things.

No, I think it stems from my father.

My father didn't work.

OK.

He stayed on the couch every day, smoking
and drinking.

Wow.

He just never was the type that would take
us out to kick a footy or hang out...

Did I tell you that?

You did and that was the quality I loved
about you

that you want to do that with
your future children...

Our future children.

The only thing I remember growing up
as a child

was being locked in a car whilst my dad
was gambling at the TAB

and saying, "Can we eat?"

And he would say,
"No, sorry. I don't have the money."

That just doesn't make sense
when you just spent it gambling on a horse

when we are hungry and we want food.

The little things to me count.

I don't care about you spoiling me
with gifts

because we never had much growing up
as kids.

Sorry.

And I'm just grateful

for the little things in my life,

having that stability with someone is what
I long for

because I just
never had it when my father was around.

That makes sense.
That was a lot of courage.

I got you. You'll be fine.

Thank you.

That shows me so much to you.

Like more than anything
we've spoken about tonight.

Deep?

Yeah. Deep.

-ba*ls deep.
-ba*ls deep.

ba*ls deep.

ba*ls f*cking deep.

[giggles]

-I've got you.
-Thanks.

-You'll be fine.
-You got me, boo.

-Well, tonight's been fun.
-It has been fun.

I must admit.

I do have a gift for you.

So when I was thinking about my match,

and what I wanted and someone was
that they were very sexual.

They had creativity and passion in them.
I felt like you ticked all those boxes.

So this is for you. It's a carnelian rock.

Carnelian?

I picked it with my mum.

Oh, red. Fiery.

It's very fiery.

That's beautiful.

Thank you.

Ooh, a little bite.

I don't know what you're talking about.

This is a nice rock.

I love it. It's a bit fiery.

You, too.

Hmm. In all the best ways possible.

I think you've really poked my buttons.

Poked your buttons?
I'll poke more than your buttons.

Where are you staying tonight?

Not telling you.

Coming here and doing this is...
This is a lot to take on.

I'm getting out of my comfort zone.
I do feel like the foundation takes time.

If we rush this, I think it will burn.

I've been single for ten years and, yeah,
it's scary but it's beautiful.

Because I'm never going to get anywhere
in life without putting myself out there.

If we want to build something,
it's gonna have to take time.

What goes up fast
will come down even faster.

Patrick is not what I expected.

Yeah.

A part of me is concerned I might have
made the wrong choice.

It was fun and it was nice getting
to know you.

But like since the beginning,

there's been so much heat and passion

between Patrick and I

and that will either blow up
or fast-track us

to where I want to go on this experience.

We should stop.
We should save the rest for later.

[laughs]

-Have a good night.
-Have a good night.

Take care.

We are going to be living together
in the next week.

I believe genuinely we're going to either
fall in love

or we're gonna end up in a...sh*t show.

Close your eyes and stay still.

I don't know.

Not knowing what the person looked like
and then moving in together with them,

that's overwhelming times ten, times 100.

At this point, where everything is going
so easily

and it's comfortable,

it is probably a little bit like
is something going to go wrong?

You need to trust me.

He's not my guy.

Because my guy that I'm supposed
to be with

isn't going to turn his head
for anybody else.

My intention is to be in love with someone
beyond this experience

and you can't f*cking see that
which is frustrating the f*ck out of me.

You finally think you've found the one

and then to have this happen,

it's like why doesn't he want me?

Yeah.

Goodbyes are never easy.

I'm a little bit nervous.

Three more singles enter an experience
that's redefining modern dating...

[phone chimes]

Modern dating sucks.
The guys are just too much.

You can see an ego through their photo.

That's like the biggest red flag.

Aren't you coming across a bit desperate
there, mate?

Well, you see, I was in a bit of a rush.

Nobody wants to be rejected.

...and Yannick meets his match.

My friends refer to me
as the walking tinder.

Some women would look at me as a conquest.

The earth will crumble
before that happens.

Do I look like what you thought I would

or very different?

Very different.

I think this one's
a bit more of a slow burn.

And later this season...

Hey, Patty. How are you doing?

Six new couples are moving in together,
having only met once...

I can't win w... I can't win.

Most of the time,
girls throw themselves at me.

Shut up! Honestly...

[phones chime]

...before the Love Triangle
twist turns the experience...

What?!

...on its head...

...and pushes the new couples...

Can we talk about this?

...to their very limits.

You finally get chosen
and it's oh, but wait a sec...

It's weird but...You will be upset
and you will be angry because I would be.

Spicy. Not interesting, spicy.

You what?
