02x07 - Winnow

Post by bunniefuu »

Previously on Cross…

You got a witness that can clear LaDonna?

I heard my buddy call him "Night Train."

- Never seen him before.
- You sure?

Is this the woman who came to see you?

[Ashford] She took a picture
from behind this portrait.

Thanks to Senator Ashford,
we now have a k*ll list.

What do we know on the new faces?

[Rodriguez] Nuri Mohindra runs the company

that provides the child labor force.

Griffith Stoker, DC fixer and lobbyist.

She's k*lling them
in the order of the story.

- Which would make Jelani the Architect.
- [Kayla] Mm-hmm.

The one who dreamed up
the entire child labor scheme.

[Kayla] That makes him next
on the k*ll list, right?

[gasps]

[screams]

[Kayla] A g*n surfaced a few days ago,

ties to Bad Religion.

They're digging, and I need to make sure
they don't find anything.

When you see Mastermind,
let him know he can leave my family alone.

- Margaret, no! No!
- [g*nsh*t]

Maggie blew her head off.

She was always a little jumpy.

- Where's the footage? Where's the footage?
- Kayla, stop!

Stop! Stop!

It's, uh… The original documents
are in a secure storage,

Thirty floors under
your-your boss's office!

Just get that f*cking thing out of me!

- [door closes]
- [keys clink]

[footsteps]

[sighs]

[soft footsteps]

[suspenseful music playing]

Whoa.

[sighs] f*ck.

Tough break on the Durand case,

but great job on getting your hands
on that video footage.

And now Bad Religion goes back
to being a bad memory.

I never doubted you, by the way.

- Not even for a minute.
- What is this?

This, my friend, is that "attagirl"
you've been waiting for.

We just had to be sure, and now we are.

Are-are you telling me that all this…

…all this was just a test?

Well, that g*n getting loose,
we didn't count on that.

But once we saw the opportunity,
yeah, we took advantage of it.

I pulled a m*rder*r out of prison,

risked my career,
lied to people I care about,

watched Margaret die in front of me
for a f*cking test?

And you passed.

Congratulations, the job is yours.

- What job?
- You…

are gonna be
the new assistant director in charge.

- Cheers.
- Pass.

Excuse me?

I don't want ADIC. I want Mastermind.

He f*cking used me
to t*rture those soldiers.

Can we take a minute to just enjoy this?

How about a "You were right, Roy"?

About ADIC.

About Hammet.

About every damn thing.

Even about you being
girlfriend material for Alex Cross.

Hold on.

Margaret was the only one who heard me say
anything about girlfriend material.

[tense music playing]

Wow. So that means you talked to her
after she k*lled herself.

Oh, wow. I mean, I should've seen it.

Her blowing her brains out like that
on a call.

Margaret is Mastermind.

Don't go there.

I'll take ADIC.

And get the f*ck out of my house.

Mm-hmm.

I'll see you Monday.

[door closes]

[mysterious music playing]

[line rings]

[phone vibrating]

[clucks tongue]

Yeah?

[Kayla] Hey. I need one last thing.

No more last things.

I know, but you're gonna like this one.

I promise.

[* Chris Stapleton sings
"Devil Always Made Me Think Twice"]

I take a little smoke in the evening

I take a little whiskey on ice

Just the kind of things I like

They're onto the truck. We need to move.

Go find me that file. Look.

Stay on top of it.
Let me know what you find.

- You got it.
- Akbar, what you got?

[Akbar] Okay, thanks.

LPR located Hayes's truck.

Agents have followed it to Rollins Park.

We'll head there now.
If you get an address, I'll be close.

John should take SWAT with him.

We don't want him waiting on them
if we get a hit.

The minute that I saw you walking over

I figured I was digging my grave

And you had the shovel,
I knew you were trouble

But you're just the kind
of trouble I crave

[sirens approaching]

Just the kind of trouble I crave

[sirens wailing]

[officer] Zeroing in on the address.
A hundred yards from target.

And Mama always set a good example

Daddy always gave me good advice

Jesus tried to steer me
in the right direction…

Go!

Made me think twice

Devil always made me think

[knocking]

FBI!

[urgent hushed chatter]

- Clear right!
- Left side clear!

[urgent chatter continues]

[officer] We're clear here.
Bedroom's clear.

[chatter continues]

[mysterious music playing]

Ah, damn it.

[sighs]

[line rings, clicks]

- Alex.
- [Cross] What you got?

They're in the wind,
but they left a bag of goodies.

Looks like Jelani's fingers.

And a photo with Durand, Helvig, Jelani.

sh*t, all of them.

Maybe a decade or two old.

I get the fingers, but why the picture?

I don't think she left it for us.

Card says, "For Nuri."

- [* Danielle Ponder sings "Some of Us Are Brave"]
- * If the sky were to fall *

I'd be the first to call

Some of us, some of us are brave

Peace and love to the ones
who give praise

Take a bow as the light hits the face

See me now

I'm loud and proud

And to those who fear
leads them to hate

What a pity to be locked in that place

I know you see me though

Some of us, some of us are brave

[intriguing music playing]

As you know, the combined efforts
of both the Metropolitan Police

and the FBI have thus far
failed to apprehend the suspects,

Luz Porras and Donnie Hayes.

- [reporters clamoring]
- My sources tell me

that the k*ller cut off three fingers
from Jelani Amadou's hand,

and that is consistent with the signature
of other recent killings.

Is that true, Agent McElhannon?

I don't know who your sources are,
but I've made it very clear…

Is there an active serial k*ller
on the loose?

And if there is, don't you have
a responsibility to tell the public?

We don't currently know
the whereabouts of Luz Porras,

but we have determined how she penetrated

the FBI security screen.

I mean, she paid me for samba lessons
a few months ago.

I can't believe
she stole my identity, too.

She was so nice.

The sn*per who k*lled Agent Goff…

- [g*nsh*t]
- [screaming]

…is assumed to be Donnie Hayes.

We've also secured images
of the sn*per's truck and license plate.

Those images led to an FBI raid

Unfortunately, the suspects fled
before they could be apprehended.

After Amadou's execution, we believe

there are four remaining targets
on Luz Porras's hit list.

Nuri Mohindra,

Griffith Stoker,

Nat Gancarz

and Lance Durand.

As we have failed
to keep the other victims safe,

we've sequestered
the four remaining targets

at Camp Harrison Army base.

If Luz wants them, she'll have
to come through the U.S. Army and us.

Thank you, Detective.

So, what's next?

Well, Detectives Hardy and Akbar
put together a, uh, summary

- of all the steps we've taken so far, sir.
- Mm-hmm.

Detective Cross's summary
was more than sufficient, Roy.

I already know what didn't work.

Chief, I think it's time
for Metro to take Op-con.

I don't believe that my team
has demonstrated the effectiveness

needed for this investigation.

Well, I can't argue with that.

And I don't think you want to be

the face of this investigation anymore,
Director Hammet.

Regardless, MPD will be happy
to do our part.

Detective Cross, I'm giving you the ball.

What's next?

We're all back together,
just like the good old days.

Nothing about this is like
the old days, Lance.

I heard about your husband, Nuri.

- I'm sorry.
- He died four years ago.

I must have missed your card.

Just because
we're all imprisoned here together

doesn't mean
we need to pretend to be friends.

Thank God you said that.

So, look, we got the same text message
you guys did today.

"Confess your crimes or pay 20 million."

I believe we all understand
the implied "or else."

Do you think that's 20 million total
or 20 each?

I think it's bullshit is what I think.

And I think Lance should pay it all,
even if it's 80 million.

It's nothing to him.

Twenty million would leave me bankrupt.

I'd have no way to provide for my family.

Hey, guys, nobody's paying anything, okay?

We're safe here.

We're gonna sit tight
and let law enforcement catch her.

"Sit tight"?

I have my family to get back to.

- Okay.
- Okay, look.

I wasn't gonna remind us of this,
but there's a list.

A k*ll list.

And you're next on the list, Nuri.

And then it's Griff, and then it's Nat,
and then it's me.

I know all about this list.
I just don't want to spend months here.

Yeah, it's not gonna take months, okay?
I-I promise you that.

Come on, Lance, don't promise her that.

You still selling bullshit
after all these years?

Yeah, I think I made you rich.

Right? I made you rich.

I made us all rich.
Which part of that is bullshit?

I put us all together, but we all agreed
to a plan, and that plan worked.

So we are not giving any money.
We're gonna keep our money.

We're not gonna confess to a single thing.

And we're gonna sit behind
these fine Americans with submachine g*ns,

- and we are gonna be f*cking safe.
- [Nuri] We're safe?

- Was Jelani safe?
- Yeah.

[Griffith] Exactly.

Now, she's offering us a way out of this.

- We should at least consider the proposal.
- You're right, we should.

Let's see. Helvig… she has his money.

How'd that end for him, that deal?

Is she gonna treat you differently?

This is a Ben Franklin moment here,
people.

We either hang together
or we will surely hang separately.

- [phones ringing]
- [quiet chatter]

- Hey.
- Hey.

Hey, um…

Uh, things got… they've been real crazy.

But you haven't updated me on the
"Uncle Sam Special" you were dealing with.

- What's the word?
- Oh, yeah, that, um…

That's-that's all taken care of.
I'm, uh, in the clear.

Hey, look, I… Do you…

[sighs] Do you notice
something about this?

Uh, it's-it's the whole crew.

It doesn't tell us anything
we don't already know.

Right, and Luz would know that.

So why would she leave it there
for us to find?

Well, maybe the question is:
What does it tell Nuri?

Or any of the survivors.
What's the message for them?

I don't know, but I'm pretty sure
she wants us to deliver it to them,

which means we shouldn't do that for her.

Boss.

Or maybe that's exactly what we should do.

And see what their reactions tell us.
[chuckles]

And knock that "boss" sh*t off.

- Is that an order, sir?
- [phone vibrating]

[suspenseful music playing]

Please, come in.

I made the Bamieh Zoolbia yesterday.

My mother's recipe.

- Coffee?
- Thank you.

You don't have to be nervous, Sandra.

Everything's gonna be fine.

I know.

I believe in you,
but I'm not sure I'm cut out for this.

You don't have to be.

- Is it ready?
- Yes.

It's all set.

Password and log-in are at the bottom.

You haven't told anybody about this,
have you?

No, of course not.

But…

I think someone from work
saw me leave with it.

You sure?

No. I can talk to her to make sure.
Should I?

No.

I don't think it's an issue.

That was delicious, by the way.
We're gonna need more of those.

Absolutely. [chuckles]

[tense music playing]

[indistinct chatter]

All right, where are the animals?

They're outside grazing.

What do we have
on the extortion text they all got?

Burner number.

Bounced through so many hubs
we couldn't source it.

And we confiscated all the phones
once the targets arrived.

Wi-Fi signal, cell signal,
all that's jammed.

No calls in or out, except…

Except?

Well, before Marco could jam the signal,

they each received another text.

[Cross] One of you is gonna get
a call from Luz Porras at 4:00 p.m.

- My guess is she wants an answer.
- [Lance] Hmm.

None of us are giving her anything.

Anyone else?

We have nothing to say.

There's no crime,
so there's no need to confess.

- No crime?
- Mm-hmm.

Then tell me about this.

- [chuckles]
- [Kayla] Stoll's Steakhouse.

Twenty-some years ago.
What was the occasion?

It's a get together.

We had lots of dinners back then.

[Cross] Then why did
Olivia Ashford hide a photo

of this dinner behind a portrait?

It's a warning.

She knows we were there.

- Warning you about what?
- Nuri.

Look, we know everyone on Luz's list
played a role.

We know about the child labor.

I think she wants you
to answer to more than that.

None of us have anything to say.

Alex.

All right. Play it that way.

See you at 4:00 p.m.

Lance.

Nuri's the weak link.

I think that Luz's call will
really get her to open up.

It's a good idea.

- Hey, wait, hey, hey.
- Yes?

What's up? You good? What-What's wrong?

Everything is just great with me, boss.

We still doing that bullshit?

What, you're not my boss now?

Okay, I didn't ask them to take
the task force away from you.

Oh, what, you think I campaigned for this?

I think you've been campaigning
for yourself your whole life.

- Wow.
- I think it's who you are.

- It's-it's why you win.
- Oh, okay.

Okay? Just stop being
so defensive and own it.

- No, yeah, you know what?
- Yeah?

You know what?
I do like being out in front.

- It's always felt right to me.
- Mm-hmm.

Maybe I like it too much.

Yeah, maybe you do.

It's just hard being the one in front
of you as you're running them over.

Honestly, I don't even know
how John puts up with it.

I told you I was fine being second
on this, and I meant it.

And I believe you.

But now you're the boss, and I have to ask
for permission to do my job.

Right.

[mysterious music playing]

[device beeps]

[phone vibrating]

Oh, crap, it's mine.

Now, remember what I told you.
Do not antagonize her.

We need her talking as long as possible.

Two minutes at least for the trace.

Fine, two minutes. We can do it.

- [phone beeps]
- [Lance clears throat]

Uh, hello, Ms. Porras.

We're… we are all gathered together.

- [chuckles] Just one big happy.
- [Luz] Good.

Have you made a decision?

How do we know you will act in good faith?

Was it in good faith
when you m*rder*d my mother?

That never f*cking hap…

That's a serious accusation, Ms. Porras.

Do you have evidence of this crime
to show us?

Nice to hear from you again, Alex.

I was sorry to hear about
your car accident.

In answer to your question,
no, we're not in a courtroom,

so they can't hide behind lawyers
or corrupt judges.

It's just me.

And I don't need proof
for what I know to be true.

Okay, that sounds to me like
you have no proof

because there were no crimes,

so there is no need for a confession.

Also, we are not giving you any money.

Really?

- Is Nuri there?
- [Nuri] Yes, I'm here.

Did Cross show you the photo?

Are you thinking about
how you're gonna explain

to your granddaughter
how you paid for her education?

Or are you gonna take that to the grave?

Because I know everything.

And there's way more than a photo
to prove it.

All right, all right, I'll do it.

Just-just give me time
to liquidate everything.

- [hushed] Shut your g*dd*mn mouth.
- [whispers] f*ck off.

Sorry, Nuri.

Everyone has to agree to the deal
or there is no deal.

Please, Lance.

Absolutely not.

Nat?

No.

Griff?

Sorry, Nuri.

Are you surprised, Nuri?

One more question, okay?
And then I'm gonna go.

Have you heard of this amazing tech

that allows doctors
from anywhere in the world

to monitor their patients' health?

A woman with a faulty pacemaker
in Virginia

can get a wake-up call

from a doctor in Mumbai.

- Time to wake up, Nuri.
- Jam the signal!

- Jam the signal!
- [device beeping]

Jam it now!

- Get a medic! Get a medic! Get a medic!
- [urgent chatter]

[man] Medic!

Medic!

[Griffith] g*dd*mn it, Lance!

You said we'd be safe!

[medic] Excuse me.

[dramatic music playing]

[sinister music playing]

[Gonzalez] The land of the flowers.

The home of a brave young woman
named Xochitl.

[Cross] Her victims are
all a part of this story.

[De Lackner] Which would
make Jelani the Architect.

[Kayla] What time's that wedding?

[Lance] I have no clue
who would chop off fingers.

[Cross] Jam it now!

- [Gonzalez] A demon more fearsome than the last.
- !Policia!

[Jannie screams]

- Nana!
- [laughs] Oh, my sweetie.

[laughs] Oh, God, I missed that smile.

I missed you more.

Well, I missed you most.

Ah. Mm.

All right.

- Nana, you're back.
- Ah, yes, baby.

I missed you so much.

Oh, and you must be Berto.

[chuckles]

So good to finally meet you in person.

[chuckles]

Thank you for having me

in your home.

[Nana Mama] Sweetie, it's my pleasure.

Alex, why are you on the couch

when you got a comfortable bed
of your own upstairs?

- I got in late.
- Got in late,

working hard, work even harder
and fell asleep. [chuckles]

Mm-mm. [chuckles]

Is something burning?

The biscuits!

[Nana Mama] Damon is cooking breakfast?

What happened to Elle?

I thought she was gonna help out
while I was gone.

She's, uh…

She's-she's not, uh,
coming around anymore.

[sighs, scoffs]

Now, see, that's what you need

- to be working late on.
- [Damon] Nana!

- Let me go help them with those biscuits.
- Yeah. Mm-hmm.

[pensive music playing]

[Griffith] You're probably wondering
why I reached out.

I'm done running, except from the FBI.

I ditched my detail in Pennsylvania.

My guy says I can put
the 20 million together in 48 hours.

I don't think I'll have much trouble

getting Lance and Nat
to agree to your deal.

I wanted to seal this face-to-face.

So we're good?

We'll be good when everyone's money
is in my account.

You know, you look so much
like your mother.

Gabriela was always…

I don't want to hear her name
come out of your mouth.

It wasn't personal, Ms. Porras.

If it wasn't personal, I wouldn't be here.

[eerie music playing]

[phone vibrating]

- [phone beeps]
- Griff, you okay?

[Griffith] Still breathing
and looking to stay that way.

I told Luz Porras I'd take her deal.

And I told her you and Nat
would take the deal, too.

Wait.

Well, you just made a promise
that you can't keep.

We'll see. Come see me
at the cabin my uncle left me.

Come alone. No need for the FBI or Nat.

[line clicks]

[whispers] f*ck!

[Nat] Was that her?

No, that was, uh…

That was Griff. I got to see him.

- I'll get the car.
- Uh-uh.

Just me.

[door opens]

[Nana Mama] There he is.

[laughs] Come here.

Give me a hug.

- Ah.
- Hey.

Mm.

Sit down.

Let me cook you something.

If I don't do the shopping in this house,
there's nothing but snacks and desserts.

Jesus.

I've been talking to LaDonna.

A-Alex told me she-she reached out.

You know I sat right here in this chair
when you told me she was dead?

That's all I could think about
when I met her.

All those years you've been lying to me.

I didn't have a choice, John.

I used to be jealous of the kids who would
send cards to their moms in prison.

I didn't even have that.

And all along, she lived right here
in the neighborhood.

Doesn't matter where she was.

There was no way
I was gonna let her get close to you.

[stammers] She only showed up
when she wanted money, not you.

I know that's a hard truth,
but it's-it's a real one.

And I had the right to know that.

When you told me she was dead,
it broke my heart.

I broke it one time.
She would have broken it every single day.

Maybe so, but I would've had a mom.

One that belonged to me.

We belonged to you. We still do, John.

I know that.

Look, you took me in, Nana,
and I will always be grateful.

But being grateful every damn day,
feeling like you got to prove yourself

to the people that took you in,
that they made a good choice,

- that's a burden, too.
- John…

J-J… John!

[door opens, closes]

Hey, Griffith Stoker just put
everything he owns on the market.

He's making a deal with Luz.

I would. sh*t, he might live.

Well, then why isn't he
picking up his phone?

And why did he ditch his FBI detail
somewhere near Gettysburg?

- You think he's running?
- Maybe.

Or maybe he's just doing something
he doesn't want anyone to know about.

You got any hunches?

How long now?

My C.I. says Tyson Knight, aka "TK,"
moved in with her a year ago.

But the landlord said he's been
in and out of LaDonna's house for years.

LaDonna didn't just know TK.
They were a thing.

Maybe they're wrong, you know?

Maybe when we find TK…

Nobody knows where this guy is?

All our leads have come up cold.

[sighs] Been a long time
since I've been played like this.

I'm sorry, John.

[vehicle pulls up outside]

[vehicle door opens, closes]

- [knock on door]
- [door opens, closes]

[Griffith] Lance, come right in.

[Lance] The door's unlocked.

You got rid of your FBI detail.

It's almost like
you got a death wish, Griff.

[Griffith] Well, I shook
those useless assholes

the minute I decided to give her
every damn thing she wants.

Because no.
No, Lance, I don't have a death wish.

Let's take a minute.
Let's just think about that

- for a second.
- That's a minute I don't have.

Because I'm next up
on her list of the damned.

- So, you just gonna let her win?
- I know when I'm beat, Lance.

You know I've had one hell of a life.

I lied, I cheated,
I f*cked my way to where I am today.

I even cosigned

- on your shady child labor scheme.
- [Lance] Which is why I think

you owe it to the world to get

- the Prosperity Seed out to…
- [groans] The world, the world.

I'm so tired of hearing you speak for
the world like you're the damn messiah.

We took the money, we ate the foie gras.

we drank the Krug,
we slept on the silk sheets,

and now the bill's come due.

And I've made my peace with paying it,
and you need to do the same thing.

Well, that is not gonna

- f*cking happen, I can tell you that.
- [Griffith] You know what?

I thought you'd say that.

So sit down
while I play my very last card.

Do you remember the last time
when we were all together?

After Gabriela Porras
turned down our money?

Yeah. So what?

I recorded it.

[suspenseful music playing]

Holy sh*t.

[Griffith] And before you get any ideas,
my brother has a copy

and distinct instructions
if anything was ever to happen to me.

[Lance] This is bullshit.
And even if you did, you were there, too.

So if that got out, we all go down.

Well, it's not gonna get out
because… [sighs]

you're gonna pay her.

No, I'm not.
And now I need that recording.

Take a minute, Lance.

You think through your options
until you realize you don't have any.

I'll wait.

[Lance] Don't you pat me
like a f*cking dog!

[groans]

- [Griffith] f*ck!
- [Lance] Sorry, Griff, but I need

- that f*cking recording.
- Ah.

I didn't think you had it in you.

There's a whole lot more there
if you don't tell me where it is!

f*ck you!

[scoffs] f*ck me?

f*ck me?

Funny.

f*ck you!

[Griffith groans]

[Lance] Tell me where it is.

- [Griffith] Please. Lance…
- [Lance shouts]

- Tell me… where… it is!
- [squishing thuds]

[panting]

[dramatic music playing]

How did you know he would do that?

I know them.

Oh, sh*t.

[Lance panting]

[phone beeps, line rings]

Look, Nat, stop whatever you're doing.
I f*cked up.

There is incriminating audio of all of us,
and Griff gave a copy to his brother.

What's his name again?

Alan? Yes, Alan.

We have to find him.

Right now. As fast as you can.

Okay. Bye.

[line beeps]

[gasps]

Donnie, get that bag so we can get going.

[Lance panting]

We need that recording.

- No, we don't.
- [Lance groaning]

We already have a plan. Your plan.

[Donnie] No, she's right.

If we get the tape from Griff's brother,
we can prove the whole conspiracy.

And then we're done.

[Luz] That was
Griffith's joker's insurance,

and it should be ours.

This is a mistake.

But if we're gonna do this,
it's got to be me and Donnie.

- Your face is everywhere.
- No, I'm coming.

She's right. We got this.

Get us an address
for Griff's brother, Alan.

I want to do this for you.

Okay. All right.

Took me ten years to earn that.

I'm proud of you, baby.

You know what I learned
in those ten years?

[LaDonna] Hmm?

When someone was lying to me.

Like when they would look away
or breathe different

or they try too hard to pull me in.

[sighs]

You played me, LaDonna.
You played me real good.

I didn't k*ll anybody, John.

- I swear to you.
- No, no, I-I believe that.

But are you still gonna hang on that lie
about not knowing TK?

I told…

Yeah, okay.

I had to tell you that so you wouldn't
think that I k*lled anyone.

No.

What you did was you found the son that
you kicked to the curb a few decades ago,

softened him up enough
that maybe, just maybe,

he would give a sh*t about you again

and then hope that he would help you
find a way out of this trouble!

I can see how you'd think that,
but let me tell you what's real.

What we've been building back together
means the world to me, John.

The world.

[pensive music playing]

I think about all the time we have to…

catch up.

Reminds me of why I left you
in the first place.

[voice breaking] I thought God didn't
give me the strength to feel that deep.

Now I know how wrong I was.

Now I know I can't get
that time back with you.

But I will take any second

and every second you'll give me.

[sniffles]

[Sampson sighs]

[sniffles]

You just don't know
how bad I needed to hear that.

We picked up TK this morning.

He's looking at
first-degree m*rder charges.

Now, you're on the hook
for aiding and abetting after the fact.

But I can get you out of this.

A.D.A. Kowaleski will drop it
to obstruction

if you testify against TK.

I'm not gonna be the one
to put my man away.

No, no. That's gonna be me.

He did the m*rder.

He's gonna do the time.
Ain't no getting around that.

Then I want to confess.

To what?

I did it. Just me.

Look, we-we already have a witness
that tells a different story.

[scoffs] Well, it'll be
their word against mine.

You willing to do that kind of time
to protect him?

If I have to.

What happened to all that…

[scoffs softly]
What happened to all that time

that we were trying
to build things back together?

I want a lawyer.

Get her out of there.

[door opens]

[handcuffs clicking]

He wasn't running.
He was liquifying his assets.

He was giving her what she wanted.
Why did she k*ll him?

She was driven by anger and trauma.

I don't think she was gonna give
any of them a pass,

no matter what they did.

[mysterious music playing]

You seeing something?

[Cross] Maybe.

Jando said her cuts were
surgical, precise.

She cut between the joints.

These cuts are jagged.
The joints are nicked.

She didn't do this.

Why would someone frame her?

To cover a m*rder.

And why would someone k*ll Griffith now?

He was giving in.

- He knew something that could hurt them.
- Yeah.

There's only two "them" left.

- Hmm.
- Either one of them could've done this.

We need to know who he spoke to
after he left our protection.

[intriguing music playing]

Be careful, Donnie.

I will.

[grunts]

[g*ns clicking]

[Nat] sh*t. Cross and his team are here.

[Steven] Should we go in?

No.

We're too late.

[groaning] It's in a book. The Odyssey.

Other room.

[suspenseful music playing]

I heard you banging around in there.

You're here to take all his money,
aren't you?

No, sir. I'm just leaving.

Damn right you're leaving.
I'm calling security.

Hey.

Nothing on the first floor.

They might still be in Alan's apartment.

Sir! MPD.

I'm going to need you
to clear the hallway.

Sir?

[Kayla] Alan's apartment.

[Sampson] Ah, sh*t, no pulse.

He's dead.

- Police!
- [Alan] He's gone.

- [Kayla] sh*t.
- [groans]

Go. Go get them. I got this. Go.

Send as many units as available.

Two, John! Look out!

Go!

[tense music playing]

Ready?

[Cross] Donnie!

[grunts]

[panicked chatter]

[woman] He's got a g*n!

- [people screaming]
- You want to do this here?

Is this you, Donnie?

- k*lling innocent old folks?
- It might have to be today.

[woman whimpering]

You gonna be a dead man wal…

- [g*nsh*t]
- [people screaming]

[panicked chatter]

Move! Get… Go!

[shouting, grunting]

Police! Drop your weapon!

[Donnie grunts]

[groaning]

Go.

Donnie, you getting on my damn nerves.

- Cut the valve!
- I got it.

Watch out, watch out, watch out. Go!

That f*ck winged me.

Did you get it?

Yeah, I got it.

Luz will finally get some closure.

[pained groan]

Donnie, you were a good friend to her.

[g*nsh*t]

[mysterious music playing]

I'm sorry, Donnie,
but Luz never needs to hear this.

I'm so sorry.

[vehicle door opens, closes]

[vehicle driving off]

[Cross] Two, John.
There's somebody over here.

Oh, sh*t, it's Donnie.

Mamas, don't let your babies
grow up to be cowboys…

[* Willie Nelson sings "Mammas Don't Let
Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"]

Go, go, go.

Hey.

Make 'em be doctors
and lawyers and such

Mamas, don't let your babies
grow up to be cowboys

- * They'll never stay **
- [song stops]

- [buttons clicking]
- [recording winding]

Heart and soul

- * Heart and **
- [song stops]

- [buttons clicking]
- [recording winding]

- * Down, down, down **
- [song stops]

[Luz] Everything all right?

Where's Donnie?

Mija…

No.

Who?

It was Cross.

[dark, dramatic music playing]

[Bobby] Afternoon, Mastermind.

[g*n clicks]

"All the king's horses
and all the king's men

worked their f*cking asses off
and put Maggie head back together again."

Now, how about that?

[* Elliot Bless raps
"So Much to Fight For"]

They can't take what I own

I got so much to fight for

They can't match what I've shown

And I got more if they want w*r

One-on-one, don't need backup

You verse me, you got bad luck

I got so much to fight for

So go on, try ahead and act up

Whole time I was playing survivor

In the belly of the beast,
I'm a street MacGyver

Where the sharks dwell and roam,
I became a diver

Navigated through the drama,
never needed a driver

School of hard knocks passed,
though I'm none the wiser

Mama see her son shine,
I escaped the visor

Whoever want to smoke
better get an advisor

I'm a pit off the leash,
locking down incisors

No L's, never lost, but I learned hope

Everything I endured had to just cope

Scars on my back
from the pressure of the ropes

Still I always hit my mark
when I'm in the scope

No L's, never lost, but I learned hope

Everything I endured had to just cope

Scars on my back
from the pressure of the ropes

Still I always hit my mark
when I'm in the scope

They can't take what I own

I got so much to fight for

They can't match what I've shown

And I got more if they want w*r

One-on-one, don't need back up

You verse me, you got bad luck

I got so much to fight for

So go on, try ahead and act up

[song fades]
