met Leon's brother, Hop,

and now the three of them
are watching the matches together.

The first match of the first round
was Leon versus Alain.

Leon fought a tough fight, defeated Alain,

and proceeded to the semifinal round.

In the second match
of the first round, it's Lance,

the newest Champion
of both Kanto and Johto,

versus the Kalos Champion, Diantha.

[announcer] Now, as they both
stand ready to begin,

which one of these Champions
will battle against Leon

in the Masters Eight
Tournament semifinals?

So it's Diantha against Lance.
Which one should I cheer for?

Ash, does that mean
that you know both of them?

Uh-huh! I even battled Diantha too.

You're amazing.

You're also one
of Lee's favorite Trainers.

That's so cool.

There's something about you
that the Champions find interesting.

[snoring]

each contestant gets three Pokémon.

No limits on time or switching Pokémon.

The one who leaves all three
of their opponent's Pokémon

unable to battle wins.

Also, a contestant can only use Dynamax,
a Z Move,

or Mega Evolution once per match.

Now, both of you send
your first Pokémon to the field!

[announcer] And they're off.

Lance starts out with Dragonite.

And to counter,
Diantha brings out Aurorus.

[purrs]

[Pokémon gasp]

[Rotom Phone] Aurorus. The Tundra Pokémon.

A Rock and Ice type.

When taken by fury,

Aurorus sends out massive amounts
of cold air,

coating the surrounding area in ice.

All right! Battle begin!

["With You" playing]

♪ I'll go anywhere if I'm with you ♪

♪ Lightning strikes or any shade of blue ♪

♪ The journey's the best part ♪

♪ Even when the road gets hard ♪

[theme music]

-[Goh] "Pride..."
-[Ash] "Of A Champion!"

-All right! Battle begin!
-[crowd screams]

-Aurorus, use Light Screen!
-Use Hyper Beam!

[purring]

[yelling]

[grunting]

[announcer] That Light Screen was able
to reduce Hyper Beam's damage.

Not only that,
but once Hyper Beam is launched,

the attacking Pokémon
is temporarily unable to move!

Blizzard!

[purring]

-That one's super effective!
-[gasps]

[tense music]

[Dragonite grumbles]

Just what I'd expect.

You handled that quite well!

[shouting]

[announcer] Dragonite is able
to move again!

Use Body Press!

[grunts]

[Dragonite yelling]

[Aurorus purring]

[announcer] And that attack
was super effective too!

Aurorus, please hang in!

[purring]

[grunts]

Use Body Press! One more time!

[growls]

Use Reflect!

Another defensive move!

[announcer] And Aurorus withstands
the attack using Reflect!

[Aurorus purring]

[Iris gasps]

Wow! It's like an aurora!

Who knew Light Screen and Reflect,

two defensive moves,
could be combined like that?

However, the effect of each move
will still vanish over time.

It's not permanent.

I think that Diantha's using it
to pressure Lance.

I'd say Diantha is clearly the one
in control of this battle.

It's still anybody's guess.

If he wavered here, he wouldn't be Lance.

-Dragonite, Twister, go!
-[growls]

Rock Slide!

Don't underestimate us.

Use the Dragon type move
we trained hard for!

[both yelling]

[Aurorus grunting]

I'd say your stint is over, Aurorus.

[purring]

[Dan] Aurorus is unable to battle!

[announcer] The first Pokémon matchup
goes to Lance!

He certainly has demonstrated
Dragonite's power!

When the going gets tough,
we simply take advantage

of our overwhelming strength!

-Dragonite's so cool!

I totally thought
that Rock Slide might get it!

But now, can it handle anything else?

Gourgeist!

Gourgeist wraps opponents
in its hairlike arms.

As they struggle, it sings a happy song.

back in the day.

There's nothing Gyarados cannot handle!

[growls]

Now, Gourgeist, use Trick-or-Treat!

[humming]

[wind howling]

-What's going on?

It's a unique move

only Gourgeist uses that adds Ghost type
to its opponent.

But that means, if Gyarados gets hit
with a Ghost-type move...

[Ash] It would be super effective!

[scoffs]
How annoying.

[Diantha snickers]

Use Aqua Tail, now!

-[thuds]
-[growling]

[grunting]

That's a lot of power.

Without Reflect, that could've been bad.

Your Light Screen will vanish very soon.

[Diantha snickers]

And that will decide this!

Shadow Sneak!

[announcer] A preemptive strike

Combined with Trick-or-Treat,
it did tons of damage!

And the Light Screen is finally gone!

[grunting]

but I'm still moved!

for overcoming that Hydreigon.

Gardevoir's the winner,
which means the victory goes to Diantha!

[announcer] Diantha will now proceed
to the semifinal round!
