02x02 - The Village Has Eyes

Post by bunniefuu »

[wind gushing]

[ominous music]

It's not my imagination.
Someone is watching me.

[exhales sharply]

I thought I'd made it stop.

The sooner, the better
I leave this place.

Can you come over?

[eerie music]

Forget it. I have to go.

[music intensifies]

[kettle whistling]

[sighs]

[screaming]

[theme music]

[pleasant music]

[brakes squeal]

[car engine revs]

[suspenseful music]

[car door opens]

[bell tolling in distance]

[Harry sighs]

- Thanks for the ride, Harry.
- Ah. You're welcome.

Great hunting in the
woods around here.

Me and Sheila are gonna bag a
few pheasants, aren't we, eh?

[Sheba whimpers]

It's this new thing I'm
trying at the Goose.

Locally sourced.

Glenn, buddy, do you mean Sheba?

Yeah, Sheba is definitely
not a hunting dog, Glenn.

That's why it's a good thing...

that I brought my shotgun, eh?

Glenn, no, no! Not here.

Church.

[zipper whirrs]

Alright.

Let's do this.

Come on, Sheila!

- Sheba. Glenn, Sheba!
- Ugh!

[sighs]

We should be getting
carer's allowance for him.

Tell me about it.

[Harry scoffs]

[Sheba barking]

[knocking on door]

[Harry]Beautiful woman.

And what does she
do for a living?

She's a writer.

Ah...

So, erm, she went
missing last week?

She was seen in the
village on Friday night

and then, poof!

When I came down, the cottage

looked like it had
just been abandoned.

And you phoned Wicklow police?

Yeah. They keep saying that
she'll probably turn up, but...

They think she's gone and
done something stupid.

Why would they think that?

[clock ticking]

Please don't read
too much into this,

but Alice's doctor was
treating her for depression.

But she was just
wound up because

she was so desperate
to sell this place.

[inhales] Why?

This cottage, you
see, it's our Mam's

old family home, and
she moved to Dublin.

Dad died a few years ago,
so when she died last year,

she left me the Dublin house.

I was happy because my
office is near there.

Oh. What do you do?

I'm a conveyancing solicitor.

Anyway, erm, Mam left
Alice this place.

She was just trying to be fair,

but the village has
always creeped us out.

[suspenseful music]

What makes it creepy?

Wicklow Way has
always been... off.

And the last time
I spoke to Alice,

she said that odd things
had started happening.

She was getting phone
calls at all hours,

she felt like she
was being watched.

And then there were strange
things on the porch,

like bloody feathers
and a, a rat's tail...

Jesus!

Sorry, why would somebody
be trying to scare her?

I need to show you something.

[ominous music]

Alice was writing
a book about it.

About the devil?

About devil worship
here, in Wicklow Way.

I was not expecting that.

Me neither.

[Harry]Fergus, take
lots of photographs.

We're going to need to
go through these later.

[Fergus]Mm-mm.

[Glenn]Harry! Harry!

- Is that Glenn?
- Yeah.

[tense music]

Harry!

- Harry!
- What, Glenn?

A body, in the woods.

A dead one! Come on!

[tense music]

[Glenn] We found it
here, by this stream.

[Leanne] Is it Alice?

[Glenn grunting]

Over here!

Here we are.

[sighs] Are you kidding?

Glenn, ya dope!

Well, it was a body once!

Oh, don't!

We still need the police.

I mean, there shouldn't be a
skeleton lying out like that.

Bloody hell!

I've only gone and lost the dog!

Sheila!

Petra's gonna k*ll me!

Sheila!

[suspenseful music]

[door closes]

A skeleton?

[Charlie] Bloody hell, mum.

Those cold cases are a bugger.

I'll get the local lads on it.

Well, it's certainly not Alice.

What is it?

[suspenseful music]

[camera clicks]

[Harry] That ring
on the finger.

I'm gonna ask Graham
Gray about it.

That man knows his history.

Hooves?

They're the devil's
thing, aren't they?

And Alice was writing a
book about devil worship.

[Harry sighs]

I mean, you're the one who
doesn't believe in coincidence.

[dog barking in distance]

Thank you for your time,
Mr. Mac Giolla Bháin.

Thank you.

[barking continues]

Who was he?

He was doing some survey.

What're you doing here?

Can we talk?

Inside?

As long as Malky isn't here.

[keys jangle]

[door opens]

[keys jangle]

Da?

Malky?

[door shuts]

[sighs] This feels strange.

[keys jangle]

[cutlery clinks]

[Paula sighs]

Jeez, nothing's changed.

What do you want to talk about?

I need to see Liberty

and I know to do that, I need
to make amends with Malky.

[scoffs]

[sniffles]

How can I make it up to him?

[Fergus] Well, you have
to give him some time.

You have to give
us all some time.

I know that!

And still, you're here now.

Point taken.

I'll go.

Can I use the bathroom quickly?

Top of the...

You know where it is.

[suspenseful music]

[whispers] Oh, sh*t!

[camera clicks]

Alright, thanks.

I'll see ya soon?

Okay.

[sighs]

[suspenseful music]

[seagulls squawking]

[door closes]

You were right.

Once more for the tape.

I was right, you say?

There's no such
thing as coincidence.

[car doors slam]

Okay. We're meeting Graham

at some ruins near those woods.

[car door opens]

Hi, granny.

Oh.

You've been avoiding me.

- Have not!
- Er, yes, you have.

Because I keep asking how
it's going with your mother.

[sighs]

And I get it, but, when my
mum banned me from seeing you,

I didn't tell you
and we didn't talk,

and did that help us?

No, it did not.

Darling, we're
actually on a case.

Look, I do wanna
talk to you, alright?

I'm just still trying to sort
some stuff out in my head.

Are we actually doing this?

Look, I promise, when I'm ready

you'll be the
first person I ask.

Charming.

- I didn't mean...
- I know you didn't.

And Lola's right.

And I'm here for you, too,
when you want to start talking.

Lola, time to scoot.

[chuckles]

Didn't I say? I'm
coming with you.

[Harry sighs]

I barely get to spend any time

with Fergus when the two
of you are on a case.

So, er...

[plastic rustling]

Road-trip.

Nice one!

Dear God. Well, if
you insist on coming,

you can at least get
an education on route.

Mussorgsky, anyone?

[both groaning]

[sighs]

[car engine starts]

[dramatic music]

[Graham] Devil worshipping!

And it all started here!

Eh, what kind of mysteries have

you guys been
solving these days?

[chuckles] Go on, Graham.

I know you're bursting
to share what you know.

I am, Harry, I am!

You see, 80 years ago,

several of the
Wicklow Way elders

formed a collective of sorts.

They were led by Maurice Lehane,

who had fought in the
w*r of Independence.

The British were gone,

but many viewed
the Catholic Church

as the new oppressors.

[scoffs] What? The
Church conservative?

Indeed!

But this group of
men, under Maurice,

thwarted the Church's influence.

Wicklow Way was
very progressive.

Young people had dances,

drinking and gambling
were allowed.

[suspenseful music]

People stopped going to mass.

The men would meet right here

and, after a time,
somebody started a rumour.

They said one night,

the men opened the door,

and the devil was there
to praise their work.

Mm. The actual devil?

Oh, for heaven's sakes, Fergus.

The rumour was started
to discredit the guys.

[Graham] Exactly!

It was a lie...

and the men weren't
fazed, at first.

[music continues]

Maurice even had a number
of rings commissioned

with the devil's
hoof on the bezel.

[crow cawing in distance]

There's a book circulating
around these parts.

"Wicklow Way, A History of
Devil Worship and Redemption."

It describes the men
begging for forgiveness.

They do say that when he died,

Maurice had his wife
bury him with his ring.

A one-fingered
salute to the Church.

But he should be in
the village graveyard.

[ominous music]

Here.

There he is.

Still buried.

[sighs]

Something's not right.

I mean, look around. This
grave has been disturbed.

Oh, wait...

[pensive music]

Oh, Christ, Harry! You can't!

[sighs]

He's been dead 60 years, Graham.

I mean, all we'd be
doing is finding out

if somebody has been
tampering with his grave.

Phone Charlie, Harry.

Oh, you know what the
guards are like, Graham.

You know, paperwork
that, exhumation this.

We'd be waiting forever.

Good God!

[chuckles] We all know
where this is going.

Let's just get on with it.

Sweets, cola, a bit
of tomb-raiding.

[Fergus]I've told ya you're
the perfect woman, right?

[shovel scraping]

[music continues]

[Fergus] That
sounds like wood.

[clanks]

[pensive music]

This coffin is way too
close to the surface, Harry.

It's been opened before.

Look.

Well, my guess is, we won't
be finding Maurice in there.

I-I still don't think
that we should...

Fergus!

[Fergus grunting]

[coffin cracks]

[dramatic music]

- Oh!
- Ugh!

[ominous music]

Oh, it's Alice.

Mm. Alice Dowdall.

[Fergus sniffles]

[camera shutters clicking]

[indistinct chattering]

Graham, take Lola before
her father sees her.

He won't wait for context.

Oh, for God's sake!

Come on.

Bye!

[camera shutter clicking]

[indistinct radio chatter]

You're welcome.

A missing person and
a missing skeleton ID

all solved in one go.

You know the local officers
think I should caution you.

Oh, Christ on a bike.

That grave had already
been disturbed.

[sighs]

Can you even still
investigate if you're Chief?

Acting. I'm still in
charge of my squad.

[chuckles] Oh.

Well, did you find out
anything about that skeleton?

Is it Maurice Lehane?

The initial examination revealed
it's roughly 60 years old

and died from TB, which fits
with Maurice Lehane's records.

Do they know how Alice died yet?

I talked to crime
scene on the way down.

They said they found
ligature marks on her neck.

Look, Harry,

we've the local doctor on
his way down to identify her.

You've found your missing
person. You can...

[sighs] You know what,

I'll save my breath.

That would be best, darling.

[instrumental music]

[door shuts]

Excuse me! Are you the doctor?

Sorry, I'm on urgent business.

Identifying the body?

Who are you?

Wild-Reid Detectives.

We were hired by Alice
Dowdall's sister, Leanne.

She was scared,
according to her sister.

Somebody was trying
to intimidate her.

[suspenseful music]

You were her doctor.

You prescribed her
medications for depression.

Had she told you anything
about what was happening?

That's patient confidentiality.

Burying a body in
an existing grave,

that's genius.

But why leave would you
leave a skeleton out

where it could be found?

Maybe it was better hidden,
but animals dragged it out?

No, I mean why would you
take the skeleton out at all?

Whoever k*lled her
didn't want her sharing

the grave with a notorious
devil worshipper?

[ominous music]

This village is giving
me weird vibes, Harry.

It's like "The Valley of
the Squinting Windows."

You read that?

[Fergus] Yeah. Got
it from the library.

[chuckles] You took
a Brinsley MacNamara

classic out of the library?

It's a shitty council
library, alright?

I've Orwell's "Keep
the Aspidistra Flying"

on hold for next week.

Oh, well, if it's Orwell
you want, take out "1984."

Unless you don't like rats.

- Ugh.
- Come on.

[music continues]

[door bell chimes]

[pensive music]

Uh. Two coffees.

A couple of cream buns,

and a slice of your finest
local gossip, please.

We don't gossip around here.

Is it true, then?

You're the private detectives
and they just found

Alice Dowdall's body?

Well, that spread
fast, didn't it?

My husband is the doctor.

Oh, so you know Alice?

Knew her.

Mm.

She wasn't well-liked.

Fancied herself, that one.

Always interfering.

Bit harsh.

We don't like nosy
people around here.

Especially those
who ask questions

but never tell you
anything about themselves.

That was Alice.

And there were rumours...

What kind of rumours?

Well, not that I'd spread any,

but they say she had
an eye for married men.

A harlot, you'd call her.

But I shouldn't speak
ill of the dead.

You, er... Do you
happen to know anything

about this devil worship legend?

We've heard Alice
was interested in it.

No. I wouldn't know
anything about that.

[music continues]

[door bell chimes]

[Fergus sighs]

[door shuts]

You two.

You were in my cemetery.
Why didn't you alert me?

Alert you?

People come to me when
there is a crisis.

Well, we weren't planning on
breaking any commandments.

We found a dead body.

[Fergus]Appreciate that
sounds a bit mental,

considering we were
in a graveyard.

There are police
traipsing everywhere.

It's outrageous that I
wasn't informed first.

A woman has been m*rder*d.

And we think you
can help us, Father.

Alice's body was
found in the grave

of a man who was
allegedly notorious.

Maurice Lehane.

We do not talk about him!

[Fergus] We're only
asking because Alice

was writing a book about
devil worship, so...

And I saw a woman sit upon
a scarlet-coloured beast,

full with names of blasphemy,

having seven heads
and ten horns!

Do not do what they do,

for they do not practice
what they preach.

They tie up heavy,
cumbersome loads

and put them on other
people's shoulders,

while they themselves are
not willing to lift a finger.

[music continues]

[door opens]

You wanna tell me what that was?

"The Bible," Fergus,
it's a fascinating read.

I'm pretty sure that
he was calling her

the wh*re of Babylon.

So, er, I gave him a quote

about the abomination
of priests to mull on.

[ominous music]

[owl hoots]

We'll need to know more
about Alice, Leanne.

Was she seeing somebody?

That's the problem,
I don't know.

I feel so guilty,
but we weren't close.

I loved her, but we were
just our own people,

and her phone is still
missing, so the police

don't know who she
was talking to.

When did she start taking
the tablets for depression?

Only recently, I think.

I didn't think anything
of it when she said

because it runs in our family.

Like our aunts and...

But then she said all this
scary stuff had started

happening, and honestly, I
didn't take it seriously.

Did she have any idea of who
was trying to frighten her?

I know she found the
next-door neighbour creepy.

Mossy Sheridan.

He farms a bit of land and
does odd jobs and stuff,

but I'm sure he's not
actually dangerous.

Well, we'll that
a look at him, but

maybe if she was seeing
somebody in secret,

they wanted to keep it that way.

But why go through the
theatrics of putting her

in the grave of an
old devil worshipper?

[sighs]

What is it?

You'll think I'm nuts.

Oh, if you knew half the
things we've heard and seen.

You can tell us.

I think Alice
stumbled on something.

About the villagers.

I think... I think they
still worship the devil.

Up at the old ruins.

[ominous music]

[Harry sighs]

It's all silly nonsense, Fergus.

Oh, I don't know, Harry.

This village is giving
me the heebie jeebies.

There is one way to find out if
the locals are up to no good.

Alright.

[car doors open]

[Fergus] Well, this is
creepier than I expected.

[Harry] It was your idea.

Maybe the devil will appear.

Ha-ha, very funny. I'm
not rising to you, Harry.

Is that chanting?

[group chanting]

What the hell?

[tense music]

Bugger this.

Harry! Bloody hell.

sh*t. I don't mean that.

There is no hell.
No devil, no hell.

[chanting continues]

[female #1] You do not
belong here. Leave.

[all] Leave! Leave!

Leave! Leave! Leave! Leave!

Okay, Harry, maybe we should go?

My arse.

Does Father Lucas know
about you lot? Hm?

The church does still
ex-communicate, doesn't it?

Fergus, let's call him.

[Donna]Don't do that!

[suspenseful music]

It's not what you think.

We're all good Catholics.

[scoffs]

No, really!

We run the village tourist board

and we got together and thought
we could tap into the myth

to try and attract
some holiday makers.

We're planning re-enactments,

we're making the village
a spooky destination.

Did Alice know what
you were doing?

Of course she bloody did.

She'd been asking Mossy
here what we were up to,

and she told him that
she would be writing

a book that would
tell the truth.

That our devil worship
legend was started on a lie.

[breathing heavily]

So typical of her
to cause problems.

Hmm.

[mellow music]

[Fergus] Could one of
them have k*lled her

because she was going to
mess up their tourism plans?

[Harry] It can't be
that inane, Fergus.

I mean, I can understand
them being upset,

but something else
is at play here.

Little villages like this,

I mean, they're always bursting
at the seams with secrets.

Like "Valley of the
Squinting Windows."

[sighs] Exactly.

[dramatic music]

[Harry sighs]

What is it? "Maurice Lehane."

Hmm.

[seagulls squawking in distance]

[Fergus] "Purgation."

What the hell does
that even mean?

[sighs]

What are you up to, ma?

[dog barking in distance]

[line ringing]

[man on phone]Council Housing
Department, how can I help?

Ahem. Is Mr. Mac
Giolla Bháin there?

[man on phone] He's
out at the moment.

Can I take a message?

[sighs]

[wind blowing]

[car door opens]

[car door shuts]

[Fergus sighs]

[sniffles]

You have that look.

You're young and tech savvy.

How do I find somebody's parents

if I can't apply for
their birth certificate?

Do you know their age
and where they were born?

Mm, rough guess at age,

pretty certain I know
where they were born.

Then there's nothing
tech savvy about it.

Baptism book in
the local church.

Ah, of course!

[chuckles] Didn't
I train you well!

[Fergus sighs]

[car engine revving]

[birds chirping in distance]

[pensive music]

Hello?

Hello!

You're Alice's neighbour
Mossy, aren't you?

Do you work here?

Sometimes.

Did you know Alice well?

Okay. That was odd.

[Fergus] So, he
digs graves, Harry.

Are we gonna ask that mad priest
for the baptism book, Harry?

Because I don't
think he likes us.

Where would they keep it?

Maybe we could find it.

- Find what?
- Jesus Christ!

Uh, we're looking for
the baptism record book.

We, erm, we think that
one of Fergus relatives

might be there.

Um...

[sighs] It, it
would help us a lot

if you could just get,

get us that book.

This way.

[Fergus]I was a bit worried
that fella was gonna

lead us into a
dungeon or something.

Ah, Lucas Bartholomew Brady.

What, the priest?

Mother, Deirdre Brady.

No father.

[gasps] Damn it.

Illegitimate.

Just like in my book!

And you know that ended
in a m*rder, Harry.

Wasn't there a family tree?

What?

The photos you took
in Alice's study.

Uh, show them to me.

Yes! Ah-ha!

There he is, Maurice Lehane.

Now it's all falling into place.

No children.

Okay. What does that mean?

The headstone said, "Beloved
husband and father."

His wife must have been...

pretty generous.

Look, you're gonna have to
fill me in here, Harry. I...

[Lucas] What is going
on in my church?

[pensive music]

What do you think you're doing?

Thank you.

Now, explain yourselves.

[chuckles] Look!

The scar, his left hand.

That's what I realised,
Fergus. Surgical scarring.

Maurice Lehane had
six fingers as well.

It's hereditary.

You... are Maurice Lehane's son.

Oh, and what do you wish
me to say about that?

You've solved the
mystery of my heritage.

[chuckles] Congratulations.

And what do you plan to
do with this knowledge?

Does my right to
privacy mean nothing?

Father Lucas,

I'm only curious
to see how eager

you are to hide your parentage.

Did you k*ll Alice
because of it?

She figured it out
as well, didn't she?

[music continues]

I didn't k*ll anybody.

She came to me,

spouting nonsense about that
stupid little book of hers

and about how she'd
expose how badly Lehane

and his cronies had been
treated by the Church.

I told her that the
definitive history

of that period had been written.

Those men begged forgiveness

to avoid purgation.

Well, there's never just
one side to history.

[music continues]

There is the right side.

"Purgation."

The cleansing of the
soul in purgatory.

"Lucas Bartholomew Brady."

[Harry]Fergus, you're
just saying words.

No, no. Claus B. Darby.

Lucas B. Brady.

Oh, my God, you're right.

This is an anagram!

You wrote this book!

You wanted people to think

the story of Lehane
had been written.

A man who lost his
way, but received

salvation from the church.

That is what happened!

And he should have begged
forgiveness for my mother, too!

Of course, Alice Dowdall
would have sympathy for him.

She, herself, a sinner.

But I tell you...

I have nothing to
seek forgiveness for.

I have removed the
stain on my family,

and I have done God's
work all my life.

God delivered Alice justice...

but not through my hands!

[music continues]

[footsteps departing]

Let me guess.

You've figured out
that the priest

is the son of the
local devil worshipper,

and Alice was gonna
reveal it in a book.

I'm a bloody copper, mum.

I went through Alice's research.

It says "Beloved father"
on Lehane's grave.

I'm impressed.

And you're late,
but I'm impressed.

So, are you going
to arrest him, then?

Pathology say Alice died
on the night of the 9th.

Father Lucas was at an
ecclesiastical conference

in Armagh for that
entire weekend.

His alibi includes not
one but two bishops.

Hm. Well, the Church
do like to cover up.

This isn't the DaVinci Code!

Well, he could have
hired someone to do it.

He's got a few locals
working for him.

He could have.

But why put her in
Lehane's grave if he wanted

to hide any links
to devil worship?

Hmm.

Now!

- Mossy Sheridan, is it?
- Yeah.

- Do you want to talk to me?
- How are you doing?

What's that about?

Don't know.

Hmm.

Well bloody done on
making the link between

that book and the
priest, by the way.

Yeah, well, I learned
from the master.

Did you notice that he intimated

that Alice was an
adulterer, too.

I mean, look, Fergus, the
village is hardly crawling

with attractive married men.

[pensive music]

Surely not.

[indistinct chatter]

I think the Doctor's been
hiding something from his wife.

Ah, come on!

[car doors open]

[suspenseful music]

- It was so obvious.
- Wait, he k*lled her?

What?

[Harry] You and Alice,
you were having an affair.

Is that why you
were prescribing her

all those depression pills?

So that, that the people
would think she was unstable.

The police would, would think
that shed topped herself?

[Matt]Are you crazy?

Alice asked for
that prescription.

She was worried.

She said her family had a
history of mental illness,

shed started imagining things.

You're not denying you were
having an affair with her?

No!

Did you need to silence her?

Did your wife?

I loved Alice.

I would have done
anything for her.

[suspenseful music]

She didn't feel the same.

To her, it was just a fling.

I wanted to give her the world,

but Alice wanted
her independence.

Did your wife know?

Of course not! I was careful.

[scoffs]

There's something I
haven't told the police.

The night Alice
disappeared, she phoned me.

Which is strange because
Alice rarely confided in me.

Even when she came
asking for pills,

she wouldn't open up.

But that night, she
seemed desperate.

[Matt]She asked if
I could call over.

I couldn't.

Donna was home.

I should have gone to her.

Yes.

You should have.

[crow cawing]

[Harry] Wait.
What, what is it?

Has something happened?

I-I can't believe it!

Oh, are you alright?

He must have made Alice do it!

Uh, uh. Slow down, Leanne.

Who, who made Alice do what?

She's left him all the land.

What land?

The 100 acres
behind the cottage.

Our mother never
wanted that land farmed

or developed, it's
all public walkways.

But Alice has left it to
him. He'll farm the lot!

To who?

To Mossy bloody Sheridan!

It all fits.

I mean, Charlie is
obviously ahead of us.

It fits and yet, there's
something not right.

I don't know.

Mossy seems pretty creepy to me.

[pensive music]

Look.

I guess Charlie's done with him.

[knocking on door]

We know you're in there!

[door opens]

Mammy liked me to keep the
house nice... for visitors.

I wonder if she's dead
in a rocker upstairs.

[Mossy pouring tea]

We know that the police
questioned you, Mossy...

and we know about Alice's will.

[thuds]

You wanted her land, didn't you?

You convinced her
to leave it to you.

No!

Didn't know Alice
had me in her will

until the Guards said.

That's hard to believe, Mossy.

[loud thud]

Alice didn't need
to leave me land.

I was buying it.

Wait, she was selling it to you?

[suspenseful music]

It's a deed of sale.

Oh, well, that's buttons.
None of this makes sense.

She said I could farm half

if I gave half of
it to the public.

[soft music]

I promised.

I...

liked Alice.

Yes, yes. Would
you send it over?

[chuckles] Thank you.

What did the solicitor say?

[Harry sighs]

He's confirmed that
he wrote up the deeds

for Alice to sell to
Mossy at that price.

He said Alice was
absolutely determined

that Mossy would get that
land. Hence the will.

But it sounds to me as if
she must have been afraid

that something was
going to happen to her.

Well, what's the
solicitor sending through?

[chuckles] Oh.

Alice received an
offer recently.

From a large developer.

Her solicitor believes that
that's why she wanted to sell.

[truck doors closing]

What's going on there?

Village of the Damned Tours?

I can't believe it.

Look at those people!

[Fergus]Oh, no.

There's the doctor's wife.

Uh-oh, she's seen us.

She's on her way.

Oh, Jesus, here we go.

[bell chimes]

[door shuts]

[chuckles]

So the devil idea
paid off, I see?

[chuckles] We
had an unexpected

publicity boost.

Alice's m*rder.

People are going
crazy to come down.

At least she was
good for something.

- Jesus! That woman is...
- Dead.

I know.

And I'm glad.

You knew about her
and your husband.

I'll get over it.

Matt is my family.

Sometimes, it's a
cross you have to bear.

[phone chimes]

God, that is one angry woman.

Alice's offer just came in
from the property developers.

[suspenseful music]

- Wow.
- What?

They offered 1.5 million euros.

And the solicitor says it
could have gone for much more.

Who turns down
that sort of money?

T-this crew specialises
in apartments.

I mean, I guess she really
didn't want it developed.

What?

I'm an idiot, Fergus!

All the parts were
out there for me,

and... and I still
didn't see it.

Come on.

I have a plan.

[Harry] You said
you loved Alice?

Completely.

Then you need to help her now.

We need to have access to
somebody's medical records.

[sighs]

That can be difficult.

[soft music]

Alice may as well have
just given the land away.

The police realise that, right?

Oh, yes, they do.

I just spoke to
the lead detective.

And they are convinced that
Mossy blackmailed Alice.

Dr. Matt admitted
that Mossy knew

about the affair with Alice.

Mossy must have threatened to
out her unless she sold to him.

But then, of course, he realised

that it would be much
cheaper if she just

left it all to him in her will.

That is horrendous.

That evil man!

[Fergus]At least you know
everything now though, right?

I mean, I just hope the
guards can find some sort of

physical evidence that can help
connect Mossy to Alice's death.

What do you mean?

Aren't they going
to arrest him now?

The detective in charge
says they don't have enough

to prove that he k*lled her.

Sure, he had no alibi,
and he had a motive...

but that's not
enough without DNA

or at least the m*rder weapon.

[music continues]

Sorry, Leanne. Sorry
we couldn't help more.

[ominous music]

[door opens]

[light switch clicks]

Planting some evidence, are we?

Oh, we know it's you. You
can just take off that mask.

I'll take that.

[plastic rustling]

[sighs] You set up the puzzle
for us to solve, didn't you,

Leanne?

But you underestimated us.

See, you're the solicitor
that works for the company

that offered to
buy Alice's land.

You told them you'd
bring it in cheaper

than market rate
when you got the job.

In fact, it is the only
reason you got the job,

because your CV
was a bit sketchy.

[siren wailing]

But Alice refused to sell.

This is nonsense!

I was just desperate
to get justice.

Your boss is already talking.

He wanted land, not to
be connected to a m*rder.

There was one piece
that really bothered me.

Alice obviously figured out
that you were scaring her.

But I just never understand why

she thought you might
want to k*ll her.

But then I realised...

violent episodes
run in your family.

[Fergus]Oh, they sure do!

I mean, you've been in and
out of psychiatric hospitals.

How do you know
that? That's private!

Hey.

[chuckles] Her friends
wanted to help her.

Her medical friends.

You knew the only way you could
get that land was by k*lling her

and framing Mossy
for her m*rder.

Yeah, you played on
all that devil worship

stuff to get us to look at him,

he was part of the local group,

he worked in the cemetery
and could have dug up Lehane.

You are a very twisted woman.

[laughs]

The mask has really slipped.

[Leanne grunting]

[Charlie] Uh, no, no, no.

Alright, let's get you down
the station. Get you processed.

And then you can do whatever
worshipping you like

from a jail cell.

[Leanne grunting]

[footsteps]

[Charlie] Take her in!

[indistinct radio chatter]

Fell asleep upstairs.

What did I miss?

[soft music]

Dare I ask?

Saw it on one of them late-night

American shows, Harry.

Fiver in.

Whoever gets to the hottest
chilli and eats it first,

no fuss,

free pints for the night.

Banban the Wise day
not work out then?

Keeping it fresh,
Fergus. Keeping it fresh.

[chuckles] Well,
what will you do

if lots of people get
to the hottest chilli?

Ah! Never gonna happen, Harry.

I'll tell you why.

So, for example...

Someone starts with
the mildest one.

Number one, right?

[crunching]

Then, um...

[breathing heavily]
Hang on. Oh...

[coughs] Hang on.

[Glenn] It's number ten!

Argh!

[coughing]

That's the Pacino!

[coughing]

You better not tell your
mum I stopped in here.

Call the emergency services!

[coughs]

Ambulance?

No. Fire brigade!

Fire! Uh-huh-huh!

[Charlie] I think it's
a priest you want.

[Glenn screaming]

[Lola laughing]

[Glenn spits]

You're distracted.

Yeah. I gotta, I gotta sort
something for tomorrow.

Mum?

[soft music]

Well, you know I'm here
for you, don't you?

Thanks.

[waves crashing]

It was a nice surprise
to get your call.

- What do you wanna do...
- You lied to me.

The man you were talking to,
he works for the council.

Our rent lease's in
Malky's name. It has been.

It has been since you left.

Are you trying to
take it from him?

Oh, my God, is that
what you think?

No! Fergus, no. I would never.

So why lie?

It wasn't a lie,

I just wanted to keep it a
secret until it was sorted.

Till what's sorted?

I'm buying the house.

Yeah, from under Malky.

No, I'm buying
the house for you!

It'll be under Malky's name
until you turn eighteen

but then it's all yours.

It's the least I can do.

[soft music]

I'm here to make
things right, Fergus.

[Fergus breathes sharply]

Er, okay.

Yeah?

I mean, that, that, that's good.

[both laugh]

I guess.

[both laughing]

[theme music]

[music continues]
