02x12 - Lawrence Chaney

Post by bunniefuu »

- Let's try again, ready?

I cannot believe this is happening.

Can you? This is fabulous, isn't it?

(crowd cheering)

- So, we have such a fabulous
lined up for you guys.

- There we go. Look at you go. Yeah.

Press it down nice and good.

This is drag.

- [Someone Off Screen]
One side (indistinct)

- Look at that. My earrings and my wig.

Thank you old friend.

(background talking)

- I need a massive sh*t.

(laughing)
(background talking)

My insides are about
to become the outsides.

(laughing)

I think you'd be surprised
how often this happens.

(upbeat music)

- Welcome everyone to
The RuPaul's Drag Race UK

Season two tour.

(crowd cheering)

- It's showtime. (laughing)

(upbeat music)
(crowd cheering)

- We probably won't ever
all be together again.

This is the only time
we can say thank you.

- Oh my God. I'm so bold.

(upbeat music)

- We're selling out every place we go

and they're getting to see
drag at it, the finest.

(indistinct)

- It's gonna be a wild show.

- It's amazing.

- I feel like Tommy Lee.

- I've never been involved in
a production this big before.

- The best drag show
you're ever gonna see.

(camera shutters)

- Think we owe a lot to the fans

because we are allowed to do this

and it's gonna be a wild show.

I'm just really excited.

- [Crowd] God save the Queens.

(crowd cheering)

- I'm trying to think how,

do I describe the many split
personas of Lawrence Chaney?

Lawrence Chaney's the act, at its core,

is just silly Scottish humor.

I love being very crass
and swearing quite a lot.

- It's proper Niagara
Falls in there, by the way.

So that's not my fault.

- What do you mean, you just shat?

- The water just hits the toilet.

- That wouldn't be
happening if people just

pissed in my mouth.

(laughing)

Yeah, it seemed to work for
me so far. RuPaul likes it.

Here, we have the common
theme of Drag Queen.

(laughing)

I'm sweating just watching.

- [Instructor] Then we're gonna change it.

- Yeah, it's, it's really weird
being reunited with everyone

because the TV show aired
a year ago, you know.

This very day, I'm sure
an episode was broadcast.

So I was nervous meeting
together as a cast

because I didn't want there
to be any resentments.

I, I just, I'm really glad
it's gone without a hitch

and no one's tearing anyone's wigs off,

yet.

(laughing)

Talk about being robbed,
I'll f*ck' rob a wig off,

you know.

(upbeat music)

I'm like the Loch Ness monster.

A legend.

My name is Lawrence Chaney.

I'm 23 years old and I'm
Scottish Drag Royalty,

which basically means no one
in England knows who I am.

It was such a standout season

with so many memorable cast members.

I remember turning up to
film it and I was like,

God who the hell's gonna win this?

Cause obviously I looked
at everyone and I was like

I can see Ginny Lemon in the
final holdin' that scepter.

I can see Asttina in the
final with that, like,

I could see everyone's right
of passage to the crown.

I just remember, you know, for years

when Drag Race was just in America,

I was like, well, here's how I
would've done this challenge,

this is what I would've
done for this runway.

And now it was my prime
time to do that for myself.

- [RuPaul] The UK's next
Drag Race Superstar is

Lawrence Chaney.

(cheering)
(upbeat music)

- When I won, there was
a lot of controversy

and I welcome that controversy.

I'm a Drag Race fan. Oh my God.

I know what people are saying on Reddit.

I've said some of it myself,
but I, I know, you know

some people weren't happy
when I won, but if all someone

can say is that someone
was robbed of an accolade

they were never given,

then I don't think it matters too much.

You know, you've gotta
understand that you are in

a privileged situation
as a winner of a series.

So it, you just always
need to be, keep it cute

and remember you're a
winner and hold yourself

like a winner, but don't be an arsehole.

And that's where some
people get stuck, but

I don't want to.

- And then you go here.

- Yeah. So the break down Yeah.

Can be put the break down and then it's,

you can fly away when you-

- I think I can almost have them hold it.

- Yeah. Okay.
- And then just-

- Easy.

I'm really nervous
because I'm not a dancer

but I've learned quite a lot of new moves

and it is really good, really exciting.

But there's just that added pressure

- 5, 6, 7, (clap, clap)

(indistinct)

- So this getup is inspired
by a baked potato I once had.

No, it's inspired by
space and we don't know

that much about it, so
I'm fascinated by it.

And I think where there's
things that you don't know about

something you can add so
much like stupidity to it.

(choking sounds)

I do have a opening
voiceover from Ru Paul.

That was so weird because I was like

there's no way RuPaul's
gonna do a voiceover

because of how mental this number is.

- [Narrator] Space, the final frontier.

These are the voyages of Lawrence Chaney.

(dramatic music)

- [A'Whora] Lawrence is
what you imagine drag to be.

You know, she's (unknown)
she is, everything's big,

like big hair, big costumes...

[ Cherry Valentine] Very well
rounded, knows who they are.

- [A'Whora] Lawrence is
amazing at what she does

because no one really does what she does.

- [Ellie Diamond] That's how
I fell in love with Lawrence

was because of her unique
style of performing.

Growing up and seeing her,

it inspired me to start
doing drag, actually.

It did. Yeah. Yeah.

(upbeat music)

(cheering and laughing)
- Yes.

Yes, b*tch.
(indistinct chatter)

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

- [Producer] How are you today?

- Yeah, I'm alive. I'm
as good as you can be.

The first show was all just
kind of working out the kinks.

And again, I've worked
out I am a kinky f*ck.

But it's just, you know, now
it's just kind of upping,

everything that was
perfect about last show

and just making it even better.

And, but we are headed to Edinburgh next

and then Glasgow is gonna be a wild show.

Both sold out.

I, I started drag in Edinburgh,

you know, I said in my hit verse on UK,

I went from Helensburg to Edinburgh,

but made my name in Glasgow City.

So yeah, no, I'm just really excited.

Really, really excited.

I was always that kid that,
you know, I had the bowl cut

and the Velcro shoes, so I
was just bullied all the time.

It was very difficult to
get makeup back in the day.

That was thick enough, you know

All I had was my mom's Dream Matte Mousse.

So I started using
acrylic paint on my face.

So I was like, yeah,
I'm, I'm my own canvas.

I'll just paint this face on.

And then you do it, you finish it,

and then you go, I look nice.

Crack, crack crack, crack crack.

You look like Heath Ledger as the joker.

But that's where I started
learning the shapes

and what angles you needed
to draw a traditionally

feminine looking face.

And then I turned 18 and I went
to see Jinkx Monsoon's show.

And that was just such
a mind blowing moment.

I met someone off the TV

and that's when I realized,
you know, I realized

that even when trying to hide and blend in

and well, I hope no one
looks at me, you know

a switch turned in my mind.

And I said, well I can
play around with makeup

and wear makeup and people
are still gonna look

at me because they're
always gonna look at me.

(upbeat music)

- This is Lawrence's hometown.

And A'Whora, right when we
walked in, A'Whora said to us,

that Lawrence has got the
biggest dressing room.

- It's massive. It's about 14.

- It's got neon lights, it's got (unknown)

- It's got chandelier. I'm fuming.

So let's go check it out. Should we?

- And then also we'll go tell Lawrence.

- We'll compare it with
the truth, A'Whora's truth.

Right? Where is she then?
Where is this b*tch?

- This way. This way.
- This way, girlies.

- This way.

Karina Glass.

Look at that.

- Hello.

- Hi. There's a small camera crew here.

- Oh, f*ck it's big.

- Look at your your massive dressing room.

- Wow. Oh my God. You
got your own bathroom?

Neon lights.

- A wet room
- A sofa.

Is that a pool right there?
- But how wet is it?

- Is that the wet room?

- No, that's where the maid sleeps.

- Oh, that's amazing.

- Echo, echo, echo.

- Hello, darling.

- I'm so nervous of it, tonight.

- It's your hometown show darling.

- Just, scary.

- It's gonna be nice.

- The last time my mom
was here, saw Liza here.

- (gasp). And now from one-

- g*y. From, g*y-
(laughing).

- I can't believe it.

You know, staggering through the song.

- Staggering...through the show.

- Yeah, it's gonna be great though.

It's gonna be a great show tonight.

Yeah, yeah you got it. Yeah, you are.

(upbeat music)

(upbeat music)

(crowd noise)

- Hi.
- Hello.

- I'm so excited for you guys.

- Dedication. Dedication
is flying from Los Angeles

just for this show. So
excited, I'm so excited.

- I love meeting greets.

I love meeting people because I, I

I just know how some
other people have treated

the fans because I, I was the fan.

I was the fan at the meet and greet.

I, I can tell you what
was a good experience

and what was a bad experience and how

that person made me feel
comfortable when I was nervous.

So I think we owe a lot to the g*y people,

the trans people, the lesbians,

the q*eer people, the,
the straight people.

You know, well, straight people,

but we owe a lot to a lot of people

because we are allowed to do,

we are allowed to do this
and make money from this.

I'm just very aware of how
much the fans do for you.

Like I think you owe a lot

to the people that come to these shows.

Fans need to come first.

Hey, there's always a
sexual pun, I don't mean it.

(upbeat music)

I'm nervous.

I'm already counting down the minutes.

You've gotta psych yourself up

that when you walk out you
may not get a standing ovation

and you may not get cheers
just because of a TV show.

So I, I'm just nervous as always,

but that's just a little
niggling feeling in my head.

A little bit of the fear.

I get nervous all the time

because

I care, a lot.

I want the show to be good

because the audience paid
like, loads of money to see us.

The audience members, some of the kids,

these kids that come to it,

they've said, Hmm, do
I spend that money now

on chocolate, sweets, f*gs,
booze, whatever it is.

Or, do I save this up
and then buy a ticket for

these weird cross dressers?

- You are nervous in
Scotland, where you could walk

out there and have a sh*t
on stage and they'd go,

that's our f*cking queen.

- I mean, to be fair, the only other

like representation we have
a Susan Boyle and Nicholas.

and I don't think that's saying much.

(laughing)

I do feel a lot pressure sometimes

because not only am I the
winner of that season.

it was such a standout season

with so many memorable cast members.

You know, you've gotta
understand that you are

in a privileged situation.

But I I, that adds to the pressure.

I'm always ready too early.

New Yorkers have anxiety
because there's so many moving

parts, loading the g*n,

getting all these clipped on,
turned on, styling the wig,

you know, getting this all perfect.

(crowd cheering)

Before in the wings, I like need to become

the purest form of brain
dead, like disassociation,

because I need to be
like, brain dead, reboot.

And then you go bang, bang.

But my name's Lawrence Chaney
and then you turn it on.

Because that's, that's
who people want to see.

That's what the energy
people wanna see from me.

(dramatic music)

(crowd cheering)

- f*cking legend.

(dramatic music continues)

- [RuPaul] Space, the final frontier.

These are the voyages

of Lawrence Chaney.

(crowd cheering)

- I love sci-fi.

Ever since I was young.

I love Doctor Who, Star
Wars, all these, you know

cheap CGI effects
sometimes I, I love that.

Campery, and Barberella,

I love all that kind of genre of film,

but it's one of the things
that makes me unique.

And I remember when I was
younger, I would be a big fan

of Doctor Who and I
would get bullied for it.

But I, I just like taking things that

I'm made to feel different for liking.

- [Asstina] When I see that spaceship,

it just makes me smile.

And that's also, it's like, that's drag.

It's taking the most ridiculous thing

and making a number that just fun.

- I just wanted to kind of make

the Lawrence Chaney
equivalent of a B movie.

So I think I've done it pretty well.

- Leave my planet alone.

(indistinct)

- But we've got this
thing on earth (unknown)

and it goes Baby bang, (indistinct).

(crowd cheering)

(shot g*n c*ck)
(pew)

(crowd cheering)

- Was the food good?

Did they like it?

Oh my god, what a relief.

I know. I'm very self-conscious
and I, I like perfection.

I'm a big perfectionist because

I collectively want the season
I represent to look amazing.

(crowd cheering)
(indistinct talking)

But I am able to detach and go,

well, they loved it.

- [RuPaul] Give it up for
our winner of Season two,

Lawrence Chaney.

(upbeat music)
(crowd cheering)

- It, there's just not a day I don't,

not think about the show and

think about how much fun it was.

What Drag Race did for
me as a young person

who didn't have any hopes and dreams,

or I didn't have a pathway
when I was younger.

And now it's so weird being
part of the machine that

I watch,

but now I'm going and doing the shows now.

Yeah, drag is the perfect
culmination of all my skills

that I was given and it's
what I'm meant to do.

I'm here in my hometown of
Glasgow and I'm Lawrence Chaney

and I'm here from England,

- [Lawrence And Crowd] Lawrence Chaney.

- Yes, that is my silhouette
but make some noise yourselves.

(crowd cheering)

And in the kindest possible way, f*ck off.

(music)
