Previously on School Spirits...

[Xavier] Maddie, are you okay?

Can I stay
at your place tonight?

I saw the universe, Rhonda.

Whoa, whoa, hey, hey.

I just want to find out
what happened to Tracey

and if she knew
how I felt about her.

I will help you find
your flute player.

[Nicole] Livia's mom,
the superintendent,

doesn't just want to move us
to a different school,

she wants to bulldoze
the old one to the ground.

[screams]

Nine people died in the church

[Maddie] And now, the memory

[Quinn]
What was going on upstairs?

[Mr. Martin] What hit the floor?

A body?

I'm so confused.

[Simon] That's everything I saw.

It's what he showed me.

[Wally]
It wasn't a bedtime story, guys.

He grabbed Simon
and he made him... [inhales]

look into his milky white eyes

and then he... transmitted it.
It was like a mind-meld.

Why'd you let Mr. "White Eyes"
get that close to him?

I told you, he pounced on him.

But I thought you said
he was "hell a old."

Yeah, he was hell a old, but he's
also not like Colonel Sanders.

Okay?
He's fast and he's T-Rex tall.

[shudders]

[sighs]

-Are you sure you're okay?
-Yeah.

What? I'm good.

What happened
after the "mind-meld"?

Did he just disappear in a poof?

No. Can we not use that word?

Once he let go of Simon,
we just got

the hell out of there.

But why transmit that story?

Well, we know
that eight children

and one adult perished
in that flood.

[Rhonda] So is "White Eyes"
or whatever we're calling him

the one adult who drowned?

Is he... "Alfred Van Heidt"?

Okay, clearly,
there's more to this story

and we're not gonna know it
unless we go down there.

-Are you volunteering?
-Me? No.

-No, I can wait.
-Oh. Okay.

[eerie whooshing]

[Wally] Simon?

Can you let us deal with this
and not you?

-He didn't hurt me.
-Not yet.

Some animals like to play with
their food before they eat it.

[Yuri]
I think we all need to go.

There's strength in numbers

and if T-Rex
can really thin the veil...

We have to do it.

[Simon] Not me.

I'm gonna sit this one out.

I'm happy to stay up here
and keep Simon company.

-Hmm.
-What? He said he was giant.

Okay? I've had some
not-so-great-experiences

with people over five-foot-ten.

No, I led with his name.

Well, maybe you need to break

Something that happened

Right.

But he's gonna be
at the festival, so why pack?

There needs to be a bag
in your car

so he knows I'm not bluffing.

You can't fool him.

[Claire] On a Sunday? Please.

and we're trapped
down there forever?

Wow. If this is your idea
of a pep talk,

you're losing your team, Coach.

We're going into the volcano.
We need to bring our A game.

Why do we need a cheese grater?

We also brought snacks.

Your dad stopped me

He made me promise

He's been digging for answers
to help us with Simon and, um...

And what?

Uh, turns out there used
to be a foundry here.

Where we're standing.
A long time ago.

It collapsed.

The place was already
filled with ghosts,

but when the building was gone,

they lost their ability
to "cross over."

They're trapped. Forever.

They call them "the forgotten."

Must be what happens to ghosts

they were living goes away.

Look, if you want me to be there

No. We're not. Not yet.

He's already acting
really strangely.

-But, Maddie...
-I don't wanna dump

Huh? Wait. So she's supposed

I mean, they don't get paid

-I can't.
-[tape turns off]

-I can't do this.
-I'm sorry, my bad.

I won't talk anymore.

To be fair, you shouldn't have
told me about the rats.

Why would he be holding those
rosary beads in his memory?

Um... Who are we talking about?

White Eyes!

Oh. Uh...
Well, he was in a church.

I mean, you found
a hymnal, right?

There's probably candles
lying around there too.

It's a Lutheran church.

They have no rosary beads!
Those were mine.

They came with me
after I was adopted.

Um, wait. Wha-what?

They belonged
to my birth mother.

She died after I was born.

The hospital kept them,

my parents wanted
me to have them.

-It's not a coincidence.
-Simon...

He has my memories!

Why does he need them?
Why did he suck me in here?

What does he want from me?!

[dramatic music plays]

I gotta clear my head!

[door opens]

Okay.

[Rhonda] Holy sh*t.

Does White Eyes sleep
under those benches?

What makes you think he sleeps?

Was this whole thing underwater?

[Yuri] Maybe.
It looks like it capsized.

[Wally] Let's stick together.

If he grabs one of us,
the rest of us pounce.

Again, we're here for insight,
Wally, not battle.

You say tomato, I say to-mah-to.

They wanna FaceTime with him.

-What else did I miss?
-Not much.

I mean, Maddie was low-key
threatened by Livia's mom

while she was signing
autographs.

Why does everyone
love this woman?

Not everyone.

She ditched her puppet show

and called her a paholainen,

whatever that means.

That means "devil" in Finnish.

Okay. Yeah, I'm sure
he'll be home very soon.

Bye-bye.

[sighs deeply] I need a shower.

Yeah, maybe it's time
we get out of here.

Not yet.

[Nicole] Claire!
What are we doing?

[creaking]

Why are you down here?

[Mr. Martin] I'm not sure.

More importantly, why are you?

[wind whistling]

[eerie music playing]

I saw these
when he was grabbing my face.

Whose blood is that?

I don't know. But look at this.

[reading foreign language]

Is that Finnish?
What does it mean?

"Do you know who I am?"

Is that a threat?

These walls
are speaking to us, Simon.

Whatever happened down here,
it's connected to all of us.

Not us. Not me. I'm not dead.

But maybe you've been chosen
for that very reason.

For what reason?!
Please! Where is he?

[door slams]

[Dave] Hey, buddy.
How you doing?

-Still dead.
-Yeah. Me too.

What, uh...
What were you looking at?

People leaving.
Flowers and balloons.

Babies.

I was wondering if you wanted
to join me on a mission.

Uh... I got a game going here.

You've had the same game going
for 20 years.

-Haven't you won yet?
-No.

But I'm thinking
about cheating this time.

Listen. [exhales]

I know the waiting feels
like the worst part

but it's not.

It's the giving up.

You shouldn't.

If someone had told me
two weeks ago

I'd be talking again
with my daughter,

I would've pushed them
out that window.

But I am.

[sighs] You don't know
what's coming tomorrow.

Kinda do.

More of today.

[inhales, exhales]

[sighs]

Don't cheat.

It'll be much more satisfying
when you win.

What's the mission?

[intriguing music plays]

[Yuri] Hey. Hey, I think
we cracked this sucker.

It looks like someone
wanted to buy the land

under this church.

But it's not signed. By anyone.

Maybe they didn't want
to give it up.

What's wrong?

Did you find Simon?

We didn't.

But he may not be the only one

who needs saving.

-When they level this school...
-We get leveled too.

I don't understand.

Our minimum security prison
might become maximum.

And White Eyes
could become our new warden.

What're you saying?
We'd be stuck down there?

Or in our own scars?

[Rhonda] Does it matter?

Mr. Manfredo isn't exactly
Mr. Cuddle Bear.

Jesus.

Whoever thought
I'd miss the sound

of Mr. South's tile buffer?
[chuckles]

How can you joke about this?

You just called your k*ller
"Mr. Cuddle Bear."

Yeah, I was being ironic,
you pinhead!

That's how I deal with being
reminded that I am powerless!

-We're not powerless.
-Oh, really?

Do you have some escape plan
that we haven't tried?

All I mean is that we still have
the power to save Simon.

No matter where we're living,
we're not living.

Simon still is

and we promised Maddie
that we would get him back.

So let's do that first
and then we can figure us out.

Great. I love scheduling
my depression.

Where's Mr. Martin's watch?

Uh... Did he come up here
and grab it?

No. We haven't seen him.

What about Simon?

Did he take the watch so he
could go back to White Eyes?

[sighs] Will we have to go
through all of our scars

to get down there?

No. We can do a shortcut.

Mine's right next
to Mr. Martin's.

All right.
That's a great idea. Let's go!

Yur... Yuri, you didn't have
to offer that.

-Charley...
-It's my fault.

I had the easiest job
of anyone and...

Charley, I can deal with people
seeing my worst sh*t.

You did the best you could
with Simon.

The dude's a loose cannon.

I mean, anyone who'd wanna ditch
you isn't thinking clearly.

[Charley chuckles]

Go back to the festival.

Okay? Check every tent.

[playing "Scarborough Fair"]

-[song ends]
-[audience clapping]

[playing "Tubular Bells
[Theme from The Exorcist]"]

[door opens, creaking]

["Tubular Bells" continues]

[raspy hissing]

[growling]

["Tubular Bells" fades]

I only do one reading at a time.

Would two of you like
to wait outside?

No. We come together.

Like a unit.

Well, only one of your unit
can touch the cards.

We're not here for a reading.

Why did you call her a "devil"?

The woman narrating
the puppet show?

I never said that.

[Claire] You called her
a paholainen.

[speaking Finnish]

[in English] Tell me why
you called her a devil.

I wasn't referring to her.

Then who?

Pick a card.

[tense music plays]

-Did you find anything?
-Just this.

-Where was this?
-Down there.

On a collection plate.

[Mr. Martin] Maybe this is what
he was talking about.

This may have been the bribe.

[thuds]

[door unlocks]

[ominous music plays]

[doors slamming]

The wand is associated
with fire, energy.

It can signify new beginnings.

-What about terrible endings?
-What?

Look, if my grandma was alive,
I'd ask her. But I can't.

Can you please tell us anything
about Alfred Van Heidt?

We know there was
a Finnish church here.

I'm not a history teacher.
Pick another card.

My history teacher says
if we don't study the past,

we're destined to repeat it.

[speaking Finnish]

Because there's no reason
to honor this man!

There was nothing "great"
about him!

He thought of us as vermin.

Expendable. Less-than-human!

Eight children died
in that church

because of Alfred Van Heidt!

He k*lled them!

Didn't he die
in that church too?

[card reader] Yes.

I can't say why he was there,

but sometimes you have
to believe in divine justice.

Alfred Van Heidt was
a twisted, empty, greedy man

who only cared
about money and power.

We were a small community,

but he wanted
what little we had.

Our land, our homes, our church.

He knew that choir was
in the basement that day.

He thought if our children died,

so would our spirit
and we'd leave.

But we didn't.

Whoa.

He deserved to drown.

He deserved worse.

[Charley] Oh my God.

Simon might be in that scar

right now with Van Heidt.

What?! Go!

On! Tell us more.

There's not much more to tell.

This is our history
in this town.

They'd like to erase it,
but a few of us won't let them.

[somber music plays]

If you brought me here,
I want to know why.

-[growling]
-[ominous music plays]

I need to go into the school.
I need to see Simon.

You gonna tell him
what your Dad said?

Yeah, he needs to know
who he's dealing with.

[Xavier] Hey.

I don't think this Tracey thing
is happening today.

Are you guys
all good to leave now?

-So good.
-Wait.

-Where's my backpack?
-What?

Didn't you have it
when we went in...

No, no. I must've
taken it off somewhere.

We have to find it.
Simon's iPad is in there.

Okay. We'll check
the town history booth.

I'll check the Lost and Found.

I'll head to the puppet tent
before I go inside.

Meet me out front.

Claire.

Are you okay?

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.

I mean, I'm not shocked this
whole town is built on lies.

[Claire sniffles] Come on.

If you threw him
in front of that bus,

you threw Wally
into the library,

you could throw me back
into my life.

-Simon, careful.
-Lift the f*cking veil

and let me out of here!

-[roars]
-[eerie whooshing]

[slamming]

[panting]

[eerie voice] You can't save me.

[eerie music playing]

-You can't save me.
-[gasps]

[discordant music plays]

-Hey! Get your hands off him!
-Wally, stop!

You have a story to tell,
you can tell one of us!

Guys, get away from him!
That is Van Heidt!

He's the one who drowned
all the kids intentionally!

[discordant music plays]

[eerie whooshing]

[Quinn] Let him go!

No! Don't!

[Quinn grunts]

[eerie music plays]

[music intensifies]

-[music stops abruptly]
-Maddie?

-[indistinct chatter]
-You okay?

Can I get you
some water or something?

No. I'm fine.

-You found it.
-Oh yeah. Yeah.

Somebody must've picked it up
and left it in the petting zoo.

Not gonna lie. It smells
a little like wet sheep.

Can we sit for a second?

I really gotta get
inside the school.

I know. Nicole told me.

But you can't get
to where Simon is, Maddie.

Look, I know a lot's gone down
in the last couple of weeks,

but there was a time
when you could trust me.

I trust you.

No. No, I f*cked up big time
and I lost that.

But I kinda thought we were
getting back to solid ground.

Xavier, this isn't about you.

I don't know how to tell people
who need me

that I can't help them.

That they might be trapped
in some version of hell

for eternity and I'm supposed
to, what, live my life?

Pretend I don't know that?

I just, I keep seeing things
that terrify me

and I can't run away from them.

Look, I know
this isn't the same, but I...

I mean, we all have
weird, messed-up fears.

Before I was a patient,

even driving by the hospital
made my skin crawl.

I mean, the place terrified me.

But then you were there

and I realized
maybe I could help you.

Maybe I could help the people
that are stuck in there.

Now I'm working there.

Bottom line, I never know
what's gonna be there

when I turn a corner:

bags of blood,
dead people in morgues,

dead people playing checkers.

But I surprise myself every day
because I go back there.

I guess what I'm saying is...

this place that scared me

is also a place
that heals people.

Maybe your brain's making you
see this scary sh*t

because, ultimately,
it wants to help you.

I hate that you know me so well.

[chuckles]

You know, sometimes, uh...

Sometimes I wonder what
it would've been like

if we could've been
who we are now

back when we were together.

I have to go inside.

[melancholy music plays]

[sighs]

[door opens]

Hey. Where's Simon?

Is he still down there?

Um... No. He, uh...

[Maddie] He what?

What? Is he okay? Is he hurt?

-I, uh...
-Quinn, what happened?

-Where's Simon?
-[Rhonda] In the library.

He's a little bruised,
but he's gonna be fine.

Wally's watching over him
like Mother Goose.

Uh, Rhonda?

There's a lot
I have to tell you.

-My dad...
-Yeah, we heard.

I'm not going to let
that happen.

We know that, Maddie. We know.

Just one thing at a time, okay?

Go see Simon.

[sighs]

[door closes]

[sighs]

[Quinn] I can't believe
this is all because of me.

All she asked us to do was
to keep Simon safe

and I broke him.

You didn't break him.

You were trying
to keep him safe.

I think what you did was brave.

If I was brave, I woulda smashed
the right person.

I was... [chuckles]
talking about the kiss.

I know I, um, talk a big game

but the truth is...

I haven't kissed anyone
in 62 years.

After what happened
to me in this school...

I haven't let anyone
get that close to me

and I wasn't sure
I ever could again.

That's okay.

I can wait.

Another 62 years?

Oh, hell no.

["Ana" by Suzanna Son playing]

[song fades out]

Hold up, guys. That's Tracey.
Just give me a second.

Hey, Tracey.

Xavier. We spoke earlier.

You're the one
who doesn't want lessons.

Right. But I might. Who knows.

What is it you want
to ask me about Kyle?

So, uh, weirdly enough,
I am the captain

of the Senior Prom Committee

and we wanted to honor
the students who didn't...

What, have a good time?

That would be me.

Oh. So you went
with somebody else?

No, I went with Kyle
and it was horrible.

Made me sorry I said "yes."

-[chuckles]
-[tense music plays]

Are we talking about
the same Kyle Jensen?

He wasn't the same.

Not after the bus accident.

He turned into
some swaggering as*h*le

who made me pay for parking.

It's hard for me
to even go there

'cause he was once so sweet,
kind, funny.

Now I cross the street
if I see him coming my way.

Are you telling me that Kyle
survived the bus crash?

Yes.

Do me a favor?

Lose our prom picture.

I did.

Does this mean Kyle
is still alive?

Not the Kyle in the hospital.

Then who's in Kyle's body?

[music intensifies and stops]

["Long Gone"
by Anna Waronker playing]
