(door creaking open)

Jo:

Oh, god, what's that smell?

- (door closing)

- farid: Let me find the lights.

(exhaling sharply)

- Wow.

- It's cute, no?

It's quaint.

Just for us.

I think I need a shower.

I'm guessing

that's not an invitation?

(door closing)

(man whooping)

(man and woman

chattering and laughing)

(chattering continuing)

(man and woman

chattering and laughing)

(chattering and laughing)

Woman: Okay, ready?

(man and woman

chattering and laughing)

(chattering and laughing)

(man and woman

chattering and laughing)

(phone chiming)

Farid: Dr. Murray

said your hearing is fine!

It's not the same.

I've lost my touch.

Farid: Hey, no salt.

How am I supposed to work?

Farid: We're not here to work.

(sighing)

Look, just give it

some time, okay?

You'll adjust to the medication.

And if I don't?

Farid: You will.

Are you happy being my nurse?

I love taking care of you.

What if this is

as good as I get?

For the rest of our lives.

I'm thinking of

going into town today, huh?

We could, uh

Check out a few shops,

Get some fresh salmon,

throw it on that nasty barbecue

And hope for the best.

Jo: I'm still pretty tired.

(phone vibrating)

(vibrating)

Wow, they've been

really persistent.

You must have won a cruise.

C'mon. Come with me.

Farid (on radio:) and while

the spectre of satanism

And wandering psychopaths

makes for a better ghost story,

The tragedy of a man

with no way out

But to k*ll himself

and his entire family

Is perhaps the

more difficult reality

For those left behind to accept.

And our youth ministry

is gearing up

For their breakfast at midnight

function next month.

- So, if, um

- (door opening)

Anyone here

Wants to donate

their baking talents,

Cough-cough, mrs. Cornish

(congregants laughing)

They will gladly take all

the help they can get. Uh

We have a very

Special guest with us today.

I would like you all

to welcome back

Mrs. Danvers.

You will all, no doubt, recall

That rena's 26-year-old

daughter, beth,

Went missing from the island

six months ago today.

Rena and I would like

to thank you

For your efforts

in searching for beth

Over these past several months.

And we continue to pray

That the danvers family

will soon know peace.

(steam hissing)

(hissing)

(hissing intensifying)

(steam hissing)

(knocking)

Woman: Did I spook you?

Jo: Uh

I'm from next door.

I thought

I'd come by and say hi.

So, hi.

Christina.

Uh, jo.

I caught you staring.

Oh, god, sorry.

No, no, it's fine.

I've seen you too.

So, how are you

liking the cottage?

Ah

It's a bit too fancy.

Is it?

- Yeah.

- It was a last-minute trip.

It's all we could find.

You too, huh?

(chuckling)

well, we built it.

- Wow.

- Mm-hmm. Do you want a tour?

Really?

Jesus, yes. The amount of money

we spent on that thing?

Please, come see it.

But just so you know, we are

surviving on compliments,

So if it fails your

expectations, just lie.

- Okay.

- Oh, and you can meet neil.

He also needs

constant affirmation,

So Good luck.

Coming?

- Okay.

- Okay, come on.

Pastor:

Thanks for coming. Yeah.

All right. See you next week.

Farid matar.

Wasn't Expecting you.

Farid: Daniel mcpherson.

It's daniel cape now.

So, originally,

it was only four bedrooms,

But then, neil insisted on a

fifth, for whatever reason.

- It was--

- (phone ringing)

Oh no. Um

It's work.

Why don't you just

go ahead and poke around?

Uh Okay.

Yeah. All our dirty little

secrets are tucked away,

Don't worry. It's fine. Go.

Alessandra? Hi.

Okay, okay. Just calm down.

(speaking indistinctly).

(water running)

Hi.

Our new neighbour.

- Jo.

- Neil.

Christina's outside.

She said I could look around.

Huh. What do you think?

It's amazing.

Smoothie?

Uh

How long are you

staying here for?

This summer, I think.

I'm not sure.

My boyfriend rented the place.

To kept lovers.

Did you notice his haircut?

Jo's been watching us.

And he hates when

I don't notice his haircuts.

Look at me.

Oh

Okay.

I love your new haircut.

- (neil moaning)

- (christina giggling)

See?

Constant affirmation.

How did you find me?

You left an easy trail.

Don't sell yourself short,

Farid; you're talented.

I'm-- I'm a fan.

Off the record.

Why did you do it?

I'm not wearing a wire.

You can check me if you want.

I understand your anger

and your revulsion toward me.

Please believe me when I say

That those poor people

did not deserve

What happened to them.

My once family, the firm,

as they call themselves,

Are incredibly powerful,

And they'll do anything

to protect their money.

But they have cast me out,

Long ago. I'm as good

as dead to them and that's--

That's how I prefer it.

As you can see,

that life is behind me now.

I have a family of my own and a

community that relies on me.

It's been over 30 years.

I understand how you feel, but

if you'll allow me to tell you--

Tell me what?

What? That you found god?

That you're helping

more people every Sunday

From behind your little pulpit

Than you ever could

from behind bars?

Those are actually

the broad strokes, yes.

Why don't you tell it

to the police instead?

Would you hear me out first?

I believe I might

I just might change your mind.

Do you think you're innocent?

I believe I should be free.

You m*rder*d children.

- I understand--

- do you understand

How rosanne knockwood's mother

Lives on without her daughter?

Do you understand

joseph chaffey's grief?

If somebody m*rder*d your wife

and your two daughters tonight,

Would he deserve to live free?

If you're the

good man you say you are,

You'll turn yourself in.

The hands you hold

that bible with

Are the same hands that

butchered that family.

If you would just hear me out

Why? I'm not the police.

I don't get to decide your

punishment and neither do you.

And I don't have the

evidence to put you away myself.

All I can do is urge you

to do what's right.

What about my family?

I am no good to

anyone in prison.

You're a m*rder*r.

Yes, I was.

And I have lived with that

every day for 34 years.

But I am a changed man and I

will convince you of that.

- You can't.

- I must.

I am a good man, mr. Matar.

I serve god. I do good work.

I have changed,

And I need you to believe that.

When I listen

To your podcast,

When I heard joseph chaffey,

Sandra loughty,

maggie knockwood

I came apart.

Daniel mcpherson

Deserves to die for what he did,

But I know in my soul

I am no longer that man.

I will never not carry

the sins of daniel mcpherson.

But if I can convince you,

A man who will not be convinced

that I should be free,

Then, maybe I, daniel cape,

Can live out the rest of my days

as a husband and a father,

And use that freedom to do

Just a little more

good in this world.

Can you not set aside

your anger and

Be truly open

to what I have to say?

And if you can't convince me?

Then, I will confess.

(loon calling)

Here, it's my

ashwaganda-verbena blend.

Jo: Thank you.

I bet you're dying

to know how I got it.

- I'm sorry.

- It's okay.

It's okay.

It's what brought me here.

What happened?

Well, um

Four years ago, my boyfriend and

I were camping in banff,

And in the middle of the night,

I woke up and camilo was gone.

So, I went out

to look for him and

That's when I saw it,

The bear.

It clawed me.

There was so much blood.

I went for the tent,

for the bear spray,

And it grabbed me

and was pulling me out,

And that's when

I heard camilo yell,

It went for him.

Camilo's face was hanging off.

Then, the bear started

eating him alive.

I just I ran.

f*ck.

I was the lucky one.

But I couldn't move on,

And the scar kept

re-infecting itself.

I wished the bear

had torn me to pieces, too.

And I realized that,

if I wanted to live,

Like live,

That I needed to

do it on my own.

What the doctors could offer

were just band-A*DS,

Just pills that make

living lifeless.

And how long have

you been medicated?

It's like you're split, right?

Like one part of you is just

Going through the motions,

And then the other part

is hovering just overhead.

And the worst part is things

that once brought you joy,

They don't feel like

anything anymore.

You lose pieces of yourself.

Six months.

I don't know,

I thought it'd get easier.

Like once I got used to it

It wouldn't be so bad.

It doesn't get better, jo.

But

What if we could

choose to accept

Instead of reject,

To choose, you know,

curiosity over shame?

What if you made the decision

Of what to do with your life?

Here.

Jo: What's this?

(jo sniffling)

It's is where the path

back to yourself begins.

(phone vibrating)

(vibrating continuing)

(phone vibrating)

(vibrating continuing)

Aunt hannah.

Aunt hannah:

Jo, how's the vacation?

Well, beats the loony bin.

How's my mother's house?

You settling in okay?

Aunt hannah: Listen,

I didn't call for a fight.

- Oh, no?

- A box arrived from montreal.

Some long-term care facility

out there called west haven.

Listen, jo, I'm Not really

sure how to tell you this.

Last week,

one of their patients died

And they forwarded her

belongings to the house.

Her name was Rose quarry.

She was 89 years old.

I called the place immediately

And asked for whatever

info they could give me,

And let me tell you,

it wasn't much.

All I know is she was

admitted in 1950 by her family,

Our family.

A trust was set up to pay

for her care indefinitely.

After that, no one visited her,

not once in 70 years.

You were right, jo.

You and martha were right.

I'm so sorry.

Send me it.

Aunt hannah: What?

The box, overnight it.

I'll send you the address.

Aunt hannah: Okay.

What about the room?

Aunt hannah:

There is no room, jo.

(jo retching)

(coughing)
