{\an8}[referee] The winner is Hezekiah Moscow!

{\an8}[Esme] When I look at you, I see
an image of a man that I loved and lost.

The past is done.

[Hezekiah] Not for everyone.

[Mary] You've been drunk for months.

I need you back as the man you once was.

[Treacle] You've been on the cobbles for,
what, twelve months, more.

- I stopped counting.
- [Victoria] I have a proposition for you.

All you have to do, Hezekiah Moscow,
is the thing you were born to do.

[Mary] I have a plan.

And if you're in, then
and only then will I tell you everything.

I've had an idea.

About you and me.

I need you to get below, Mary.

For Alec.

[crowd shouts]

[Hezekiah] One last chain.

Then I can go home, Brother.

[Hezekiah's mother] Go back.

[Hezekiah's father] Hezekiah, go home.

[people shouting, clamouring]

[soldiers shouting]

[screaming]

[soldier 1] You heard him. Get in a line.

[soldier 2] Yes, sir.

[people screaming]

[driver] Whoa.

Go on.

[bell tolling]

[Hezekiah] Edward John Eyre.

Who are you?

[clicks tongue]

I read that the Queen reward you
for your contributions to the Empire.

Did that open an old wound?

That wound never heal.

You know, I could place you
as soon as you spoke.

Many years I spent on that island.

The voices of each region are s--

What do you remember of Morant Bay?

I remember a great storm,

followed by the most punishing sun
I've ever felt on my skin.

[chuckles]
Memory's a funny thing, Mr Eyre.

History remembers your words
more than our screams.

But not at this altar.

Not before God.

I remember duty.

And chaos.

We were slipping our grasp
on civilisation.

So, I used a language
that people never forget,

force.

Shall I tell you what I recall?

Stories of a man.

A white man, who governed my country.

Stories of my people rising up against
sickness and poverty.

And this same man...

Edward John Eyre...

sending militia with r*fles,
when all we had was cutlass and rock.

[scoffs]

First time I ever saw fear
in my father's eye.

He begged me to run, and I did.

b*ll*ts raining behind me.

And when I reached home,
my mother was gone.

Shot down and swallowed by flame.

[crying]

I was a child watching my world burn.

[breathes shakily]

My name is Hezekiah Moscow...

and the world may not remember, but I do.

[g*n c*ck]

And today you will answer to God.

Everything I have done,
I have done in service to Him.

Is that the lie you tell yourself?

[gasps]

[breathing shakily]

[Hezekiah] I've seen this moment,
many times in my dreams.

[pants] God, please.

But you are just a man.

- [Eyre breathing shakily]
- [exhales deeply]

A man who can't escape his cruel deeds.

[gasps, whimpers]

Let the screams haunt you,

and the spirits of the innocent
grab you at night.

Until the day you are called.

[breathes shakily]

[g*n clicks]

[sighs]

God won't be there at your end.

[breathes shakily]

- [urinating]
- [groans]

[grunts]

[Treacle] Esme.
Esme, where are those barrels?

[neck cracks]

[clears throat]

[grunts]

[Bull] ...business with him in this borough,
so we'll leave when we've spoken to Sugar.

[Treacle] Just come back tomorrow,
or the day after.

[Bull] Don't you give me that sh*t.

[Treacle] I'm asking nicely
and I've been polite.

- [sighs, smacks lips]
- Sugar is busy at the moment.

- [clears throat]
- [Bull] Oh, look what the cat dragged in.

At f*cking last, the proprietor.

I-I told 'em there's
been a change of hands,

but they didn't wanna hear it.

[Sugar] Well, I assume the Jeremy family
have come up East to wish us well.

[Sugar clears throat]
My condolences about Indigo.

[Bull] You know what, that's just it.

We're here because
there are a lot of rumours...

[Treacle] I told you,
we don't care about rumours,

so take your investigation
back to Elephant and f*cking Castle.

[Bull] We're here
because there were a lot of rumours,

just repeating myself for Sugar's benefit.

Can any of you Elephant boys read?

'Cause if you can, you'd see
it's my brother's name above the door.

So, that's enough.

Our brother's funeral was maybe
two miles long?

Everybody came.

But you didn't.
None of you from round here.

Well, I was busy, and he was drunk.

What about the man who did the k*lling?

[Treacle] We don't know.

[laughing, muttering]

[sniffs] That's the funny thing, that.

Because after our brother's m*rder,
whispers varied.

- But...
- [strikes match]

[inhales deeply]
...one detail stayed the same,

that when the k*ller pulled out his g*n,
an inch of his wrist was uncovered,

and they saw his skin.

[blows]

His skin was black.

There are Black men
living all over the docks.

We're interested in the man
who lives in the Wapping Wall.

- The fighter.
- Who? Hezekiah?

I'll need to hear it again.

[chuckles] Hezekiah Moscow?

I can't be sure.

Oh, come on, f*ck off.

What kind of man
would hide behind their sister's veil?

You'll respect her gifts, Treacle.

Behold the mighty Elephant Boys,
eh, reduced to a travelling mystery show.

My sister is touched by the angels.

She hears a name and the truth follows.
Or is it the truth you're afraid of?

D'you know what,
I'm starting to run out of patience.

- Just f*ck off!
- Treacle...

I see a raven... [gasps] ...and a rose.

What does that mean?

f*ck knows.

But I get a chill with it.

Joanna, can you séance past lives?

I'd like to speak to my old mama.

Is she yours now, Treacle?

If so, she's overdue
for some edu-f*cking-cation.

Yeah, f*ck you, Bull.

You're not Indigo, you never will be.

That's right, I'm not Indigo,
never was, never f*cking will be.

Right, I'm giving youse about a minute.

- Or what?
- [Joanna] There's a feather.

- The show's over!
- It's close.

A conversation with the fighter.

That's all I ask.

My brother wants you gone.

That's harbouring, Sugar.

I'll give you two days.

This is your jurisdiction.

You f*cking talk to me.

Why don't you go and f*ck yourself?

We've always towed the line with them.

That was with Indigo,
but they're just a f*cking comedy act.

Well, you may notice
that I ain't laughing.

[Treacle] Come on, get this tidied up.

[knocks on door]

[Jack] Good afternoon, comrade.

I got a message. You wanted to see me?

It feels as if everyone in this place
has already lost their battles.

I've been sitting here and thinking.

Why do I sense danger?

Come on, I've been focused on
returning the fight to France.

But the people here need a victory now,
and we have the means to provide it.

[Jack] Nitroglycerin.

Take these shells.

When you grind them up fine enough,
you can combine them with nitroglycerin,

turning the content of that crate
into dynamite.

The poor man's food, is also his saviour.

Bon, then we begin.

[rings doorbell]

[knocking]

This way.

[servant] A Miss Polly Crane,
here for the afternoon sitting.

[Mary] Mr Leighton.

[Leighton] Um...

Excuse me, I think there
must be some confusion, uh, Miss Crane.

Today's sitting is with...

Oh, forgive me.

There's the problem.

No joy in painting a woman
so easy to forget.

[Duval sighs]

Huîtres à la chambre
right from the market.

Have a seat.

[sighs]

So... [sighs] ...where have you been?

On a journey to find truth.

Well, some would say there are many truth.

Did the one you find bring you peace?

I don't know.

When the river withdraws,
it leaves many things behind.

But this, my friend.
This, is the working man's jewel.

Humour me.

[chuckles]

[sniffs]

Enticed by the unknown.

It seems our paths
were meant to cross, Hezekiah.

[slurps]

[groans, chuckles]

[Duval chuckles]

Mmm.

Is this a pastime of yours, Miss Crane?

Barging into places unannounced
and using charm to get your way?

You could say that.

I can see why you might be successful.

Enchanting as you are, I shan't paint you.

You came in here with a very clear plan,
and choice matters to an artist, Polly.

I have to choose you.

Did she wait to be chosen?

She did.

Perhaps that's why she isn't smiling.

I've met people, from all walks of life,

many of whom
claim to have a passion for the arts.

Most of it's about feeling superior.

When I look at an image,
I focus on the only thing that matters.

And what might that be?

The story.

The questions that linger in your head
as you walk away.

"Why this moment?

Why this person?

Why should I remember you?"

I have a story worth telling,
Sir Frederic,

and if you paint me,
I think you will agree.

The Communards ruled Paris
for two months, from March to May, 1871.

The people, as a collective,
peacefully took control.

They separated Church from State,
abolished child labour,

allowed the workers
to take control of their workshops,

so the poor were finally free
from the ownership of the rich.

But then...

then came 'La semaine sanglante'.

The week of blood.

French soldiers came,
in their blue uniforms

that would soon be red.

They burned our homes.

Our homes?

They opened fire on unarmed men,
women, and children.

But, I fear I'm boring you
with my emotional stories.

No. [scoffs]

No, no, no, no.

You don't have to fear that.

You know very well that my story
and your story are similar.

You believe all men are equal,
and yet you underestimate me.

So, give me the respec'
of speaking honestly.

What is it you want?

Same thing as you.

We are men that have known misery.

But what if we could feed
our oppressors justice,

and send them back to hell?

I have tried revenge...

and it did not bring me freedom.

I want to look forward, not back.

[sighs]

Well, it's a sin to waste
the fire inside you, my friend.

Well, you fight your way,
and I'll fight mine.

But what is your fight, Hezekiah?

What is it you want?

[grunts]

Can I help you, sir?

Hezekiah Moscow.

I'm here for Miss Davies.

Mr Moscow.

Please don't judge my worth
on the strength of my grip.

I was taught
that a tight handshake is vulgar.

[Victoria chuckles]

Mr Moscow, this is Prince Albert Victor.

His Grace is second in line
to the British throne.

He has an offer for you
it might be worth your while to consider.

Come. We have everything prepared.

I assure you, Mr Moscow,

you've never seen anything
like this before.

We've had men working day and night,
all days of the week,

just for your arrival.

Now, it's been built to the specifications
of the Marquess of Queensberry.

The exact dimensions.

I assume you've fought according
to the Queensberry rules, Mr Moscow?

[Hezekiah] I'm familiar.

Come, please.

Gloves.

Pick a pair, Mr Moscow.

You said you have an offer for me?

[Albert chuckles] That's right.

Victoria has told me
a lot about you, Mr Moscow.

This unfortunate business about your ban.

Not being able to fight
in the ring anymore,

that must be crushing.

I have an offer that I think
is best aligned with your interests.

You see... [chuckles] ...as a boy,
I toured the empire with my father,

and I share a passion
for what lies beyond these walls.

Passion and belonging
are not the same thing.

[scoffs]

I have land.

A sugar plantation in Jamaica.

Now if you go home to that
you'd be a very rich man indeed.

But I do have to win.

My name rests in this defeat.

So, if you lead me to victory,
then it's yours.

Hmm.

And where exactly in Jamaica
is this plantation, Your Royal Highness?

Well, it's on the coast.
It's a beautiful inlet.

It's a place called Morant Bay.

So that's your offer?

Hmm?

Reward me with land that
should've always belonged to my people.

Yes. This way it's returned to you.

[inhales deeply]

Well, why don't you think on it?

This is your chance
to go home with something.

[Mary] Watch it.

[baby crying]

[knocks on door]

[Eliza] Mary.

Can I come in?

Pick your face up.

I didn't know that...

Jesus.

What happened?

After the heist,
I came out here to lay low.

Times were hard.

So, I got a job at the match factory.

It kept me fed.

Before long,
we noticed the girls getting sick.

Turns out it's the chemicals
needed for the flame.

It's rotting our teeth from the root.

Swelling our faces.

And you still work there?

The pain is still better
than watching my back.

Well, you need a doctor.

I'm on the list for the factory one.
All I can do is wait.

I am sick of everyone taking life
lying down.

You can look at me with disappointment,
but I am not ashamed.

You come down here
and have the nerve to judge me,

after what you did.

Eliza, I'm sorry for what happened,
but we don't get to quit.

I'm bringing the Forty Elephants
back together again.

What if I'm no good?

I'm not like I used to be.

Well, you work with what you have, Eliza.

We're meeting at the Blue Coat tomorrow.

You should come.

[Albert grunting, panting]

You know, this won't
be like the rest of your life.

You can't pick a fight
like you do your suits.

These gloves favour the deprived.

[pants] I need a foundation.
Perhaps a quick run-down of the rul--

- [grunts]
- Instinct is a foundation,

and right now your instincts
tell me you're lazy, spoiled,

- and would rather quit than lose.
- Watch your word.

And if that's true, I won't waste my time.

[panting]

All right. [pants]

[grunting]

All right, good. Now, more important
than your fists are your feet.

More important than your feet is the fire.

- [grunts, coughs]
- The fire here.

[Albert grunting, breathes heavily]

[Hezekiah] Hmm.

[breathes heavily]

The only way
you can step into this ring with me,

is if you leave your title at the door.

[grunting]

[breathing heavily]

[people chattering]

f*cking death wish.

[knocks on door]

There's a train heading west
which leaves from Paddington Station

at midnight tonight.

By the morning, you'd be in Bristol Docks,

where you'd be wise
to blend with men of your colour.

You want me to run?

Why should I do that?

Well, if you don't, there'll be a w*r.

w*r with who?

The Jeremys are looking for you.

Be on the train,
or you'll be food for the eels.

Now, you saved me
that night in the square.

Now consider us even.

You're taking on a lot around here.

I just fill the gaps.

Yeah, I see nothing but gaps.

You know what this place
meant to the East End.

Yeah, well, the past is the past, so...

It's more than bad business, Thomas.

There's darkness in here.

What's going on?

It's Mum. Couldn't handle his outbursts.

She-She said she wouldn't go for long.

Am I interrupting something?

I asked you a question.

It's nothing. [stammers]
There's no need to start, Dad.

It's okay.
I asked about the pub, that's all.

Anything that happens in these walls...

come to see me.

I'm seeing Esme.

Bedding. Handmade. Fine silk and cotton.

The note came from a Miss Sophie Lyons,
asking you to prepare for her arrival.

Yeah, she's an American associate of mine.

She's very particular.
Seems she's already on her way.

Treacle would prefer if you
sent your communications elsewhere.

- Esme.
- Oh, don't.

I understand survival,
but you can still have more than crumbs.

- Treacle's a different man.
- Oh, I know.

I'm hearing things.
What if he turns on you?

Well, I need protection, Mary.

Right now he feels
like a safer bet than you.

Esme.

Esme.

I'm sorry.

I can't change the past.

But please, give me a chance
to fix right now.

I got something in motion.

Could be huge,
but we all need to get together fast.

Just let me make my case,
and then you can decide for yourselves.

Madam.

Madam!

Can I help you?

You haven't paid.

Well, of course not.

Excuse me?

Richard never allows family to pay
at his hotel.

Mr Hudson is your...

My cousin.

And he assured me
that everything had been arranged.

Well, this is the first I'm hearing.

Oh, well, it has been
a very difficult time for Richard,

with the death of his mother.

My-My aunt.

That's... That's why I'm here, you see.

For the funeral.

Between us, how has he been?

Distracted, understandably.

Yes, well, it was very...

very sudden.

[inhales deeply, sighs]

Richard told me how you've all stepped up,

practically running the show
while he mourns.

I'm so grateful.

And impressed.

I bet your wife worries
about you working so hard.

Well...

You must barely be sleeping.

I try not to complain.

Oh, you poor, poor thing.

Perhaps Richard mentioned it
and you forgot.

He-He must have. I'm really--

No, no, don't... Don't even think about it.

You're doing your job,
and better than most.

Here.

A little tip for your efforts.

Thank you.

No, thank you.

[Mary] Thank you, Eliza, for coming.

I appreciate you all being here.

It's been a long road.

Tougher on some of us than others.

Look, I'm sorry about the Lonsdale job,
and I know I owe ya.

I know I made mistakes.

But I'm here to put us back on top.

I'll fight.

I will f*cking fight,

and I will prove myself, if you let me.

But I won't beg.

[chuckles]

[sniffs] So, that's it?

That's your big plea?

A promise of nothing and half an apology.

I mean, the journey was hardly worth it.

- Verity's not even here.
- We're working on it.

- [Anne] Not hard enough.
- What do you want? Blood?

Maybe.

If there's a plan, lay it on the table.

If we like it, we'll stay.

But the rest still needs to be discussed.

A job's come through from New York.

Things are moving fast.
We have an associate on the way.

She's a very smart woman,
respected in her line of work,

but we're smarter.

Lucky for us, she has no idea.

Now, I wasn't straight in the past so,

let me tell you now,
this will be complicated.

It's a long game.

But at the end, we enter a new world.

[shouting, clamouring]

sh*t.

- [civilian 1] Jeremys!
- [civilian 2] Jeremys!

[Jeremy 1] Move it!

We win.

[chuckles] And we win big,
and all the takings are ours.

[Belle] Really?
What about the Elephant Boys?

For god's sake, Mary, tell 'em why.

What's she talking about?

There's a reason
we don't answer to men anymore.

Tell 'em. Tell 'em what you did.

I took the noose
from around our f*cking necks.

[Jeremy 2] Don't move. I'll smash you.

Hezekiah Moscow.

The day of judgement is upon you.

It was sworn in blood on Indigo's coffin.

We will pursue you
until the end of heaven and earth itself.

Hezekiah Moscow, show yourself.

What did you do?

They k*lled my brother,
so I k*lled one of theirs.

- Out you go, come on, move.
- [Bull] Step out now like a man...

- Thomas, get the girls.
- ...show your face...

- Rose, come here, darling. There you go.
- ...and I give you my word...

that we will grant you mercy, or...

March on the Green Dolphin.

Smoke the rat out if he is there.

Or hide like a snivelling coward,
and we will find you.

- Yes we will.
- Yeah, go on. Go!

And we will tear you
limb from f*cking limb.

- I shouldn't be here.
- You should go.

[Bull] We'll rip your f*cking homes apart
until we find him!

Thomas, close the blinds.

Come on, all in. Yeah.

I'll handle this.

You take care of the girls.

Yeah?

Yeah.

[sobs]

[Bull speaks indistinctly]

[Mary] Sugar, wait!

So, this is why you needed me.

Eh? To clean up your f*cking mess.

[Bull] Show you face.
Give us the fighter and this will end.

We will rip your f*cking homes apart
until we find him.

[Jeremys clamouring]

[civilians shouting]

[grunts]

[groaning, grunting]

[choking]

- [Duval] Hey, mon ami.
- [screams]

[grunts]

[grunts, chokes]

[grunting]

[breathes heavily]

- [choking]
- [Duval grunting]

[panting]

- [civilians screaming]
- What the f*ck? Take a look.

Sounds like it came from over there, mate.

[Duval grunts]

[groaning]

[grunting]

[pants]

[grunts, pants]

[breathing shakily]

[grunting, panting]

[Jeremy 1] He's over here!

This is it. Here!

[Jeremy 2] I'll go upstairs.

- [grunting, panting]
- [Jeremys speaking indistinctly]

[civilians clamouring, screaming]

[panting]

[Duval groaning] Oh la la.

f*ck.

[blows]

[Bull] f*ck, I can't see sh*t.

There they go. That's them.
The f*cking rat!

Open the door!

[panting]

- Who's this?
- [grunting]

[grunting]

[groaning]

I f*cking warned you.

[breathing heavily]

[gulps]

[breathing shakily]

[Duval choking]

[Hezekiah] It's all right.

[breathing heavily]

Sugar Goodson.

The Jeremy family and the fighting men
of Elephant Castle

demand that vile, murdering beast

be handed over
to our custody here and now.

Or I will burn the Blue Coat Boy
to the ground,

with all the souls contained therein.

- [panting]
- Last chance, Sugar!
