Anne: My last year at Redmond has begun.
Anne: We fought for graduation honors,
Anne: poring over classics
Anne: and pounding away at mathematics.
Anne: Sometimes we grew tired. Sometimes we felt discouraged.
Anne: Come in.
Stella: Oh, I've had enough!
Stella: Nothing seems worthwhile.
Stella: What are you laughing over?
Anne: Just looking over some old Story Club yarns.
Anne: I wanted some relief,so I dug these out of my trunk.
Anne: They are so drenched in tears and tragedy that they are excruciatingly funny.
Stella: I'm blue and discouraged myself.
Stella: But there's nothing funny about it.
Stella: What is the use of living after all, Anne?
Anne: You should read this.
Stella: "My Graves"?
Anne: My masterpiece.
Anne: Mr. Harrison would say it's about people I don't know in places I know no better.
Anne: Phil would say it's k*lling—in more sense than one,
Anne: for nobody in it can escape being m*rder*d or else dying of a broken heart.
Anne: Doesn't it make you laugh?
Anne: I'm sure I wanted to wax sentimental.
Anne: Although I was surrounded by dear things whether I shed tears or not.
Anne: I see that now.
Anne: What's this?
Anne: Oh, yes. I remember.
Anne: It's a little dialogue in a garden blooming with asters and sweet-peas,
Anne: between a visiting wild canary and the guardian spirit of the place.
Anne: I recall the day I wrote it.
Anne: I fell through the roof of the Cobb duck house on Tory Road.
Anne: Marilla scolded me something fierce.
Anne: I believe I will.

I Have Learned to Look uponEach Little Hindrance as a Jestand Each Great One as theForeshadowing of Victory
Philippa: Thank you.
Philippa: Three for Stella.
Philippa: Two for Prissy.
Priscilla: Thank you.
Philippa: Here is a letter with an Indian stamp for you, Aunt Jimsie.
Priscilla: Who could be writing from India?
Stella: One of Auntie's three devotees, no doubt.
Philippa: There's nothing for you, Anne, except a circular.
Philippa: And this glorious fat one is for me from Jonas.
Philippa: Honey, what good thing has happened?
Anne: The Youth's Friend has accepted a little sketch I sent them a fortnight ago!
Philippa: Anne Shirley!
Philippa: When is it to be published? Did they pay you for it?
Anne: They've sent a check for ten dollars,
Anne: and the editor writes that he would like to see more of my work.
Philippa: What was it?
Anne: It was an old sketch set in Avonlea.
Anne: I rewrote it and sent it in, but I never really thought it could be accepted,
Anne: because it had no tragedy, romance, or even a plot.
Philippa: What are you going to do with that ten dollars?
Philippa: Let's all go up town and get drunk!
Stella: Oh, Phil.
Priscilla: Think of having a real live author at Patty's Place!
Jamesina: It's a great responsibility.
Priscilla: Indeed it is.
Priscilla: Authors are kittle cattle. You never know when or how they will break out.
Stella: Yes.
Stella: Anne may make copy of us.
Philippa; Priscilla: Oh, what a horrible thought!
Anne: I would never.
Jamesina: I meant that the ability to write forthe Press was a great responsibility.
Roy: That's marvelous.
Anne: But I've only had short pieces accepted yet.
Roy: I believe you have a God-given talent.
Anne: I don't know about that, but I mean to continue.
Anne: I'd like to write better stories.
Roy: I'm behind you.
Roy: I know you could become a great author.
Anne: Thank you.
Anne: Look at them mooning.
Roy: By the way, shall you be home Saturday afternoon?
Anne: Y-Yes.
Roy: My mother and sisters are coming to call on you.
Anne: What?!
Roy: I'm sorry to spring this on you.
Anne: N-No,
Anne: I shall be glad to see them.
Philippa: Roy's mother is coming herself?
Philippa: Well, I suppose it was inevitable.
Philippa: Anyway, she must view you as a possible member of the clan.
Philippa: You'll be weighed in the balance, Anne.
Stella: Phil, is that any way to put it?
Anne: It's all right.
Anne: I shall not try to make a good impression.
Anne: I shall just be myself.
Anne: Tomorrow is Saturday.
Anne: What shall I wear to meet them?
Stella: This is Roy's mother, remember. You'd better dress good and proper.
Anne: You're probably right.
Jamesina: Stella, tidy up a bit.
Jamesina: The place looks a mess.
Stella: I can't help it.
Stella: I can't write so much as one page of a report any other way.
Anne: Should I do my hair up high, do you think?
Priscilla: There! That's the chocolate cake done!
Jamesina: My, but that does look good.
Priscilla: Come on, Anne.Stop brooding and come to tea.
Anne: All right.
Philippa: That smells divine.
Priscilla: Doesn't it?
Priscilla: And here I spent half a day baking it!
Philippa: Don't worry. It's still edible.
Philippa: Anne, get a dishcloth from the kitchen.
Anne: All right.
Philippa: Would you answer that, Stella?
Philippa: It must be the new hat I ordered.
Stella: Then you answer it.
Stella: I'm at an important part.
Philippa: Oh, fine, then.
Philippa: Thank you for—
Gardner: Is this Patty's Place?
Philippa: Yes.
Gardner: My name is Gardner.
Philippa: M-Mrs. Gardner?
Gardner: Is Miss Anne Shirley at home?
Philippa: J-Just one moment.
Philippa: W-We have an emergency! It's Mrs. Gardner.
Anne; Priscilla; Stella: What?!
Priscilla: Wasn't she coming tomorrow?!
Anne: Mrs. Gardner?!
Philippa: Don't ask me!
Philippa: Anyway, she's here now!
Philippa: Anne, hurry and change clothes.
Philippa: Stella, tidy up that mess!
Priscilla: What about the cake?
Philippa: Throw that dishcloth over it for now!
Philippa: Hello. So sorry to keep you waiting.
Philippa: My name is Philippa Gordon.
Philippa: I'm Anne Shirley's classmate.
Philippa: Roy has always been very kind to me.
Gardner: Well?
Gardner: Is Miss Anne Shirley at home?
Philippa: Yes, she'll be with us in a moment.
Philippa: Wh-Why, here she comes now!
Anne: I-It's a pleasure to meet you.
Anne: I'm Anne Shirley.
Anne: Welcome to Patty's Place.
Gardner: These are my daughters,Aline and Dorothy.
Dorothy: Pleased to meet you.
Anne: The pleasure is mine. I'm Anne.
Anne: What now? I must say something.
Anne: Um...
Aline: What rude creatures!
Anne: Joseph! Rusty!
Gardner: Miss Shirley.
Anne: Yes?
Gardner: You are...
Gardner: fond of cats?
Anne: Well, yes.
Gardner: I have never liked cats.
Anne: Y-You don't say.
Dorothy: I love them!
Dorothy: They are so nice and selfish.
Dorothy: Dogs are too good and unselfish.
Dorothy: But cats are gloriously human.
Gardner: You hold your tongue.
Aline: You have two delightful old china dogs there.
Aline: May I look at them closely?
Anne: Yes, go ahead.
Aline: What breed of dogs are they, I wonder.
Anne: I c-couldn't say.
Aline: Here, now!
Aline: Stop that!
Dorothy: Aline! Are you hurt?
Aline: Really, is it any wonder I detest cats?!
Gardner: Tell me, Miss Shirley.
Anne: Y-Yes?
Gardner: What are your intentions concerning my son?
Gardner: If—
Dorothy: My.
Gardner: Well then, if you will excuse us.
Anne: Please, take care.
Dorothy: Anne!
Dorothy: Roy has told me all about you.
Dorothy: I'm the only one of the family he tells things to.
Dorothy: Nobody could confide in mamma and Aline, you know.
Dorothy: I know you and I are going to be chums.
Anne: Yes. Thank you, Dorothy.
Dorothy: What glorious times you girls must have here!
Dorothy: Won't you let me come often and have a share in them?
Anne: Of course.
Anne: Come as often as you like.
Jamesina: People who send word they are coming on Saturday shouldn't come on Friday.
Philippa: Where is Anne?
Stella: Upstairs.
Anne: Dorothy...
Anne: is a really cheerful dear.
Anne: Aline...
Anne: will never like me. That much is certain.
Anne: And Mrs. Gardner...
Anne: Still, Rusty and Joseph, what a welcome you gave them.
Roy: How were your examinations?
Anne: I've done all that I can.
Anne: All that remains is toawait the results.
Roy: Don't worry. I know you'll do well.
Anne: Thank you.
Roy: I can see it now.
Roy: If it's about the visit, I told you it was to be Saturday.
Dorothy: I said the same thing, but mother insisted it was Friday.
Gardner: You always make out that I am to blame.
Gardner: I suppose you resent me for making you accompany me to Europe.
Roy: Of course not.
Gardner: Oh, I do not feel well.
Gardner: I fear that I may take ill again.
Anne: Um...
Anne: I'm sorry that we weren't able to show you much hospitality the other day.
Anne: And the cats were too awful.
Anne: But I'm glad that you came on Friday.
Anne: If I had waited for you all until Saturday,
Anne: I know my heart would have been crushed under the strain.
Anne: Your coming rescued it.
Anne: Thank you.
Roy: Mother...
Roy: has been especially sensitive about many things since her illness.
Roy: She must have given you an awful time.
Anne: No, I hope you'll all come again, if you can bear it.
Anne: Roy really is like a prince in a story.
Anne: Gilbert never could be.
Anne: So why do I...
Anne: A few days later, the examination results were posted.
Anne; Philippa; Priscilla; Stella: Done at last!
Anne: Prissy took Honors in Classics, and Phil in Mathematics.
Anne: Stella obtained a good all-round showing.
Anne: I managed to take Highest Honors in English.
Priscilla: Do you realize that our life together is almost over?
Stella: Yes.
Philippa: We can always get together.
Anne: Yes. Let's look on the bright side of things.
Priscilla: It won't be so easy.
Priscilla: Phil will be Mrs. Blake once she graduates.
Stella: She'll be a minister's wife,
Stella: far too busy to spare time for us.
Philippa: Yes. I'll be a little candlestick to light Jonas's way.
Priscilla: And Roy will propose soon, won't he, Anne?
Anne: Will he? I wonder.
Priscilla: No doubt of it!
Priscilla: It will be rather lonesome.
Philippa: What are you moping for?
Anne: And the morning of Convocation...
Anne: Yes?
Jamesina: Good morning, Anne.
Jamesina: Delivery for you.
Roy: Dearest Anne,
Roy: No doubt your brilliance will dazzle my eyes on graduation day.
Roy: Royal Gardner.
Roy: That concludes my address.
Roy: Thank you all for listening.
Roy: I am Royal Gardner, speaking for the graduating class.
Chancellor: We anticipate your accomplishments.
Female Student: Thank you, sir.
Chancellor: Congratulations. We are proud of you,
Chancellor: Anne Shirley.
Anne: Thank you, sir.
Philippa: Gilbert sent you those lilies-of-the-valley, didn't he?
Philippa: I don't miss much in affairs of the heart.
Anne: Yes.
Philippa: Why?
Anne: I don't know myself. Only...
Philippa: Only what?
Anne: Gilbert and I have both pictured this since we were little.
Anne: The day on which we shall be capped and gowned graduates in Arts.
Philippa: Roy might be feeling hurt.
Anne: I'll explain it to him.
Anne: I don't want any misunderstands, and I plan to wear his flowers to the party.
Philippa: Yes, do that.
Philippa: I don't know what Gilbert was thinking, either.
Anne: Why?
Philippa: I heard his engagement to Christine is to be announced as soon as Convocation is over.
Philippa: Did you hear anything of it?
Anne: No.
Gilbert: Anne.
Gilbert: May I have a dance?
Anne: I'm sorry.
Anne: My card is full.
Gilbert: Well, that's that.
Gilbert: Some other time, then.
Anne: Yes.
Gilbert: Congratulations again on graduating. And on Highest Honors in English.
Anne: Thank you.
Anne: And you took High Honors in Classics and the Cooper Prize.
Anne: It hasn't been taken for five years!
Gilbert: Thank you.
Gilbert: Well then...
Christine: Gil, let's dance.
Gilbert: I'd love to.
Roy: Anne.
Anne: Roy.
Anne: You're angry, aren't you?
Roy: No, but I was surprised.
Anne: I'm sorry.
Roy: I never knew I was such a jealous person.
Roy: I'm frightened.
Roy: When I think of losing you...
Anne: The party went on late into the night,
Anne: but Gilbert and Christine's engagement was never announced.
Anne: Just imagine, this night week, I'll be in Avonlea.
Anne: Delightful thought!
Anne: But I'll be gone forever from Patty's Place, too.
Philippa: I wonder if the ghost of all our laughter
Philippa: will echo through the maiden dreams of Miss Patty and Miss Maria.
Anne: What nice times we've had here!
Anne: What chats and jokes and good, chummy jamborees!
Philippa: I'm to marry Jo in June and I know I will be rapturously happy.
Philippa: But just now I feel as if I wanted this lovely Redmond life to go on forever.
Anne: No matter what deeper joys may come to us later on
Anne: we'll never again havejust the same delightful,
Anne: irresponsible existence we've had here.
Anne: It's over forever, Phil.
Philippa: What are you going to do with Rusty?
Anne: Aunt Jamesina says she'll take him with the other cats.
Anne: I'm sorry to part with Rusty,
Anne: but Marilla detests cats, and I don't suppose I'll be at Green Gables very long.
Philippa: Why not?
Anne: I've been offered the principalship of the Summerside High School.
Philippa: My! Are you going to accept it?
Anne: I... I haven't decided yet.
Philippa: What a lovely sky.
Philippa: Someone will ask you to go for a walk on an evening like this.
Anne: I wonder.
Priscilla: Anne, Roy is here.
Priscilla: He wants to know if you'll walk with him.
Priscilla: Do you think Roy will propose?
Philippa: I'm sure of it.
Jamesina: Anne is a very fortunate girl.
Stella: I suppose so. But is this for the best?
Jamesina: Stella?!
Stella: I love Anne and I like Roy.
Stella: Even Mrs. Gardner thinks Anne charming now.
Stella: But I have my doubts.
Anne: Yes.
Anne: Yes.
Anne: Yes.
Roy: Anne,
Roy: I couldn't be more thankful to have met you and spent my time at Redmond with you.
Roy: And I want to be with you always, until death takes me.
Roy: Anne,
Roy: would you accept my love and consent to marry me?
Roy: Anne?
Anne: I can't.
Anne: I can't marry you.
Anne: I can't!
