For his first official space scout event.

During my space scouts sleep-out tonight.

I was just about to set up my own weather station.

It's a separate undercover case.

- Ooh, fantastic.

We finally get to help build a weather station.

One quick question: what's a weather station?

- It's a way of figuring out what the weather's doing

Based on what you can see and measure.

- Awesome!

And what exactly would a weather station look like?

Is it kind of like a big hat?

- How did you learn about weather stations, mitchell?

- My grandpa's a farmer.

When I go to visit him, we talk about weather.

See, he needs to know if there's rain coming

To grow the plants and food on his farm.

So he watches for changes in the sky.

- I get it, it's kind of like being a weather detective.

- That's correct, mindy.

I'll show you guys how to make a weather station.

We need to get some weather station things together.

[Suspenseful music]

Okay, I think we're all set.

Watch and learn. Jet, the tape please.

Sydney, the thermometer.

Sometimes, when it's about to rain,

The temperature will go down. - What's this notebook for?

- You're going to draw the clouds, mindy.

- Goodie! - And last but not least,

We'll finally be able to use this.

- All right, a turkey! - It's a rooster.

So we can see which way the wind is coming from.

[Weather vane whooshes] [cody whimpers]

- Hey, what about these things?

- Ah, we can measure how much rain we get

Using this bucket and the ruler.

- Oh, wow, this is excellent.

If you keep this up, you may be a space scout too, one day.

- Did you hear that, cody? I might be a space scout.

[Triumphant music]

[Clears throat] anyway,

On to the weather station. We are open for business.

Bring it on, weather! And we'll keep an eye

On cody and the other animals around here.

- Why? - My grandpa says some animals

Get more quiet before it rains, and some get more active.

[Floyd chittering] [upbeat music]

- Whoa, floyd's super active.

Then again, he's usually pretty active.

- Grandpa also says dogs can tell the rain is coming

By smelling the air. [Cody snores]

But I'm pretty sure that's not true.

- Okay, we've got the cloud sketches.

- Cloud sketches?

- Let me check my big book of clouds.

- You have that big book?

My mom said it was out of print.

- Well, I have it.

- So what does it say about clouds?

- Low, thick, and dark gray clouds

Like the ones you drew tend to have

A lot of big, wet water droplets inside of them.

And that could mean that it's going to rain pretty soon.

- Oh, no, can you tell when it will start?

- Not yet, but checking the thermometer

And the weather vane for wind direction can help.

- Oh, look, the weather vane is moving.

- Oh, the wind has suddenly changed direction.

So, the weather vane shows us that the wind is coming

From the east. That could mean wet weather.

- I just wish there was some way

We could learn more about these clouds up close.

- Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

- Go to the dsa! - Go to outer space!

- I bet my mom could help us at the dsa.

She knows all about weather.

- And the dsa is closer than space.

- Plus, um, we're kids, and there is no way

We can go to space. [All laugh and chatter]

- Pfft, what were we thinking? - I'm not sure.

Anyway, all I know is I'm staying here

To monitor the weather station.

- Uh, great, great, great. See you later, mitchell.

[Mysterious music]

- I remember you told me about the satellites

Up in outer space, mom. Don't they watch the earth

And track the weather? - Exactly.

And we're in the perfect room to show you how.

This is our "eyes on the earth" room.

Dr. Bergs is in charge. He'll show you how it works.

- Gladly, dr. Skelly. Okay, these satellites

Are watching earth with cameras to measure information.

- Why? - Excellent question, mindy.

Satellites help scientists make better weather forecasts.

There are many things we track from space,

Like rain, changes in temperature, and--

- Uh, can we back up to the rain part for a second?

I just need to know if it's going to rain tonight.

- Sean kind of needs to know now.

- Yeah, he might have a new chart to make.

- I love charts! Anyway, our satellites

Are showing us that rain is indeed in the forecast.

- [Sighs] I guess I'd better

Make other plans for my space scouts sleep-out.

- Did you say space scouts? I was a space scout.

- You were? - I sure was, troop .

- Troop ? That's my troop!

- Did I just hear the space scout greeting?

- Dr. Skelley, I can't believe you were a space scout, too.

- Uh-huh, scouts are the best. So, I have an idea

For your sleep-out in case it rains, sean.

[Uplifting music]

- Well, that was fun. But we still don't know

If it's going to rain.

[Weather vane whooshes] - I think we have our answer!

Look at that turkey-- I mean rabbit, go!

- It's still a rooster, jet. [Thunder booms]

- Wow, it's raining.

- Good news, our weather station works.

Bad news for sean's sleep-out, but great news for plants

And flowers, and umbrella salespeople.

[Thunder booms]

Come on, cody. Let's get inside.

[Cody whimpers, weather vane whooshes]

- My mom and bergs are going to let us

Sleep right here in the planetarium.

- That's so cool, sean. - Also, bergs is going to show

Everyone the eyes on earth satellite watcher.

- In that case, I can predict a % chance of fun

On the space scouts oversleep!

- Sleepover. - I am ready!

What's the first thing you notice

When you look up in the sky?

The sun! But don't look directly at it.

Because it's so bright, it can hurt your eyes.

The earth goes around the sun,

And the moon goes around the earth.

Sometimes, you can see the moon in the daytime,

But you can never see the sun at night.

But what if I told you that sometimes,

Day can turn into night

When the sun is still high in the sky?

When that happens, we call it a total solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse happens

When the moon gets between the sun and the earth,

And blocks the sun completely out.

And even though the moon is way, way, way smaller

Than the sun, it looks the same size in the sky

Because the moon's a lot closer to the earth

Than the sun is. So the moon looks

Just the right size to perfectly block out the sun.

You have to use special eclipse-viewing glasses

As the moon moves across the sun.

Ask a grown-up to help find you some.

They're super stylish.

During a total solar eclipse, the sky goes dark.

And you can see the stars during the daytime.

Can you imagine what people must have thought

About total solar eclipses a long time ago?

They must have been really confused.

But now, we know it's just the sun,

The moon, and the earth all lined up together.

And look, when the moon comes between you and the sun,

Its shadow passes over you, see?

- [Gasps] look, the shadow's covering me!

- And when the moon completely covers the sun,

It's a total eclipse. - [Squeaks]

- Oh, so that's how it works. Thanks, jet, thanks, sunspot!

- Whoa, cool. What are those for?

- Well, they make it possible

To look at the eclipse while it's happening.

- Right, we don't want anybody looking straight at the sun.

- [Imitating robot beeps]

People of earth, you ain't seen nothing yet!

[Laughs] I love these!

Hey, do you have a total eclipse song and dance planned?

Both: uh, no. - Uh, that's okay, jet.

You don't have to do a song and dance.

- Or use your mechanical backpack arm thingys.

To get our part of the presentation together.

- Jet, that's actually a really short time to prepare.

- Exactly, sean-zo, every minute counts.

- That's when it looks like when the moon's mountains

Pass in front of the sun, and shines around them.

- This eclipse is going to be so cool.

Sometimes animals think it's become night.

- Really? What do they do?

- They might try to go to sleep as soon as it gets dark.

- Wow, it says the birds may actually quiet down

And stop chirping. - Whoa.

You mean to tell me that in... - Minutes.

- All the birds and squirrels and dogs and cats

Might go to bed in the middle of the day?

- I guess so. At least that's what it says

In my big book of eclipses.

- [Squeaking]

- Heh, sunspot says how can the earth animals

Think an eclipse is night,

When it's the middle of the day?

He says he'd never fall asleep during an eclipse.

He'd know it's not bedtime, because he'd wear a watch.

- [Squeaks] - hey, that's my watch.

- [Squeaks]

- Thank you. - Anyways,

Sunspot's going to go teach the local animals

All about solar eclipses so they won't fall asleep.

- I thought he was going to help us write the song.

- [Squeaks] - he says he'll do both.

- [Squeaks]

What the eclipse would look like from space.

Would you fly up in the saucer and let us know

What's happening as the moon passes in front of the sun,

- Sure. - Wow.

The eclipse is starting.

The sun is being covered by the moon.

- Yep, time is ticking, carrot.

Let's jump in the saucer and go.

- [Clears throat] okay, it's nearly time.

We only have...wait, um. Where's our countdown clock?

All: sunspot!

- [Squeaking]

- Three minutes.

Three minutes and counting down.

[Spaceship whooshes]

- Aha, the moon shadow, I see it!

Hey, jet, jet, we're being followed by a moon shadow.

And it's coming your way! - Oh, thanks, dad!

I can see it.

It's getting darker.

- Oh, my gosh, look everyone. The diamond ring.

[Crowd oohs] wow, it's exciting.

- Ooh, should reach totality in ten, nine, eight, seven...

All: six, five, four, three, two, one.

- We have totality!

All: it's a total eclipse of the sun!

- [Gasps] stars! I can see the stars!

- The two biggest things in the sky

Are the sun and the moon.

But did you ever wonder what would happen

If those two things got a little too close together?

Hi, I'm astronomer amy mainzer.

Well, sometimes something happens

Where the sun, the earth, and the moon

All line up in just a perfect line,

So that it makes the moon appear to disappear.

We call that an eclipse.

The earth travels around the sun once a year.

And the moon is travelling around the earth once a month.

Just like you, the earth has a shadow.

And when the moon passes into it,

We get what's called a lunar eclipse,

And the moon turns red because some light from the sun

Is still sneaking around the earth to shine on it.

This doesn't happen every month

Because the moon actually travels around the earth

At an angle.

[Upbeat music]

Sometimes, the moon can get between the earth and the sun

In the daytime, and it also casts a shadow,

But on the earth.

We call this a solar eclipse.

This is very rare, but when it does happen,

It's spectacular.

If you're lucky enough to see one,

Make sure you're very safe,

And never look directly at the sun

Without special protection.

That means using special eclipse glasses

Or a pinhole viewer. The sun is still very bright.

So the next time you look up at the full moon,

Just imagine what it would be like

If it would slowly disappear right before your eyes.

Well, maybe someday,

You'll be lucky enough to see an eclipse just like that.
