[narrator] The sun rises once again.

[narrator] After three days of rain

and freezing temperatures

without any substantial food,

all teams are feeling physically weak.

[Brian] We can only eat seaweed so long.

We're gonna have to start worrying

about protein, dude.

[narrator] At this rate, whoever gets

a consistent food source fastest

has a clear advantage.

[Jill] About the last hour

we've been collecting limpets.

Kinda getting out of breath.

There's not enough proteins

and vitamins going into our bodies.

[Amber] Here, there's a nice worm.

Drop it in.

[Amber] Alrighty. Welcome to Alaska.

[Lee] It's still wiggling.

[Angie] If that squirrel comes back

- [Seth] We need to k*ll that squirrel.

- He's dead.

I'm looking to munch on some

little squirrel thighs. [chuckles]

[narrator] As the only team

to lose a member,

Charlie has one less set of hands

to assist in the hunt for protein.

- It is one less mouth to feed, though.

- It is.

So, from a very pragmatic standpoint

You know, what do you say?

[narrator] At Delta Camp,

having fashioned a hook and tackle

from scavenged aluminum and plastic,

Jordan looks to become the first player

to pull a fish from the Neka River.

Biggest concern is that

we haven't eaten very much.

We put a lot of effort

into our shelter and our fire,

but we haven't produced

nearly enough food.

I'm gonna be fishing within an hour.

Relying on you, Jordan.

You are our fish man.

Man, fingers crossed

that you catch us a fish.

[Dawn] That would be absolutely amazing.

[narrator] While Jordan embarks

on his fishing expedition,

Alpha is being more resourceful

in their quest for protein.

[Justin] I think what we have

is enough for now.

[Jill] Okay, let's start back to our camp.

- [Amber] Let's go.

- [Justin] Sounds good to me.

[distant roaring]

[Justin] Holy sh*t!

- Bear!

- [narrator] With winter fast approaching

- Look!

- [Jill] Oh my God.

[narrator] and temperatures

already beginning to drop

[Justin] There's a bear

crossing the river right now.

[roaring]

[narrator] the players aren't

the only scavengers in the area

looking to fatten up.

- [Justin] Hundred yards out.

- [Jill] I see it! Oh my God!

[Justin] Shh! We don't want

to draw any attraction.

[narrator] An adult grizzly bear

can weigh nearly 800 pounds.

- [Amber] Gosh!

- Just be quiet. Oh!

- [growling]

- [Lee] Are you serious?

[gasps]

[narrator] They spend the fall

aggressively hunting and scavenging

[Justin] Mothereffer.

Oh, he looked right at us.

[laughs nervously]

[bear growls]

[narrator] consuming

up to 20,000 calories a day,

preparing for their winter hibernation.

He's goin' up

into the tree line, you guys.

[Justin] I was chopping wood there

this morning, 100 yards from our camp,

and he walked right up in that spot.

[Amber] We might have a visitor for lunch.

He's gone.

[narrator] But the threat

of a nearby predator soon gives way

- [loud shot]

- Uh-oh! Look! There's a flare.

[narrator] to more excitement.

- [Lee] sh*t.

- [Justin] Someone tapped out.

[Paul] That sounded like a flare.

[Angie] Dude. Woo!

- [loud shot]

- [Paul] Oh, sh*t!

- [Justin] There, look, another flare.

- Two?

[Joel] That's two.

- [cheering]

- [Joel] One step closer, baby.

[laughs]

Yeah!

There goes another one.

[propulsive music playing]

[Justin] I'm here to play the game.

I'm here to win.

[tense music playing]

[narrator] Two flares light up the sky

above Bravo Camp.

That's two people.

- Right.

- Two people.

[narrator] It's only day three of the game

and already the harsh Alaskan wilderness

has broken two more players.

- That was Bravo Team?

- [Jill] Yeah.

[narrator] It's a cause for celebration

among the other teams

hoping to outlast them

for a million-dollar prize.

Pop-pop-pop.

- [Nick] Flare g*n, baby.

- [Angie] How many?

- [Seth] It looked like two to me.

- Two?

- [Nick] It looked like it.

- [Seth] But look, man.

One more for us.

That's right.

[narrator] While most players do not know

from whom or from which camp

the flares were shot,

one team in particular does.

[Brian] You guys dropped your flares.

- Yeah, I'm ready to get out of here.

- [Brian] Dudes.

[Tim] I'm just I'm done.

Yeah. I'm soaked to the bone.

Alaska really chewed me up

and is now spitting me out.

When did you decide this?

[Tim] Last night.

Nights are cold, man.

They're [bleep] brutal, dude.

But also, Javier is micromanaging.

It hit me in the wrong way.

That broke the camel's back right there.

You have any ego, come here.

- Get checked out quick. [laughs]

- It's next level.

I've got a whole new respect

for this place.

[Brian] I don't know what to say, man.

This morning, we woke up to a surprise.

But my gut's telling me

it's no great loss.

Tim is the least experienced of us all,

and Corey is always complaining.

If I let you down in some way,

man, I'm sorry.

[narrator] Falling victim to the extreme

Alaskan climate and circumstances,

Tim and Corey opt to exit the game,

leaving Bravo Team now as the only team

on the game board with two players.

So, it's down to me and Javier.

Ruh-roh.

[Javier] Now, it's just Rambo and me.

So, I'm nervous about that.

This is a team event.

If Brian goes down, I've got to find

another team to join, if they have me.

Or that's it.

My run here is gone.

[narrator] After three days,

there are only 13 players

left in the game.

[rain showering]

[Jordan] Ooh.

Stomach just grumbled.

There it is. There's that hunger.

If we're the first team

to go find some salmon,

it's gonna be just a huge step

in bringing this thing home for us.

[evocative music playing]

[Jordan] That doesn't go

nearly as far as I need it to.

I've been fishing most my life,

but since we've gotten here,

I haven't caught anything.

I haven't even had a fish look at my lure.

I only need it to work one time.

I'm just not thinking this is the spot.

I need to get my lure

out in the middle of the river.

[rain continues]

[Jordan]

Probably just gonna work upriver here

and do some recon

and just get a lay of the land.

We need to find something

that's gonna produce more food

than what we've been getting.

I'm thinking I wanna work up

that way a little bit.

[narrator]

Jordan continues to scout upstream

[Jordan] That looks like

some good smoke they're producing.

[narrator] and becomes the first member

of Delta to locate Charlie Camp.

As much as we want everyone

to starve and freeze out,

I think that we also want

to play a mental game.

All right, what's a realistic lie?

So, I wanted to try

to get in their head a little bit.

What would be in here?

What would they believe?

[tense music playing]

[Seth] How are your boots feeling?

Any better?

[Nick] Yeah, a lot better.

Socks are starting to dry out.

- [footsteps approaching]

- [Angie] Did you guys hear that?

- [Nick] Uh-oh.

- [Jordan] Knock-knock, fellas.

- [Nick] Hey.

- [Angie] Hey, man.

[Jordan] I was working up the river a bit.

I just noticed smoke was coming up.

How you guys doing in here?

[Nick] Good, man.

How's your food situation?

Oh, we're k*lling it.

- [Nick] k*lling it?

- Yeah.

We had a bird yesterday.

We had a fish today.

- [Nick] Wow, good for you.

- [Jordan] Yeah, we're doing pretty good.

We've had enough food coming in

that we've been able to just keep going.

- Have you been eating?

- I got a bit. Not much.

The fishing situation

on this side kinda sucks.

They're out there. I caught 'em.

[tense stinger]

Jordan sparked

my immediate competitive side.

I see you guys got a flare g*n out.

Who's gonna pop it next?

[Nick] You?

I just I don't like him.

And I don't like being psychologically

manipulated by anybody.

[Jordan] You guys are down

to three teammates.

Let me just throw this out there.

We got one person on our team

that's probably having a hard time.

Last night probably

got to them a little bit.

[Jordan] Obviously, that's not true.

But all I wanted to do

was plant that little seed of doubt

and maybe pit 'em against each other.

So, we're gonna have room

for one here in a little bit.

One of you is gonna

have a decision to make.

[Nick] You think somebody's

gonna be that bad there?

Yeah, and I think one of you

is gonna have a decision to make.

I'm just throwing it out there.

I don't mean anything by it.

It's not my place

to tell you guys what to do.

- Someone's gotta win this thing, right?

- [Seth] Absolutely.

- [Nick] Losers and winners in every game.

- [Jordan] Exactly. So, you know what?

Looks like you're doin' good.

I'll get out of your hair.

[Jordan]

I did a great job going over there.

I felt like I was convincing.

- [Nick] See you, man.

- [Seth] Take it easy.

[Jordan] I feel like they bought it.

So, I think it's just a matter of time

until one of them really considers

trying to come over here

and see if they can wiggle in.

All that's gonna do

is help that team fall apart more.

I don't believe anything

that dude said. Not at all.

- No.

- [Nick] I have a really good gut.

I've known a lot of liars.

I know how they act, man.

His body language, his eye contact.

Like immediately, my gut reaction

was like, this is an insincere person.

[Angie] I can't stand him.

It's like I'm talking

to a car salesman out here.

He came over bragging

about catching a [bleep] fish.

That's a psychological game.

I know what you're trying to do.

I was like, "Oh, no. Not with me, honey."

It's so obvious.

So, shut up,

go back to where you belong, and starve.

[laughs]

But thank you for coming

and burning your calories.

Try to mad-dog me in my house?!

[narrator] Just 1,500 meters upstream

[Amber] We have fire ♪

[narrator] Team Alpha prepares

to cook the cup full of limpets

they were able to forage from the beach.

[Amber] And Jill is going to cook us

some amazing limpet soup.

Freshly plucked sea limpets.

[narrator]

A limpet is a small aquatic snail

that can be found

clinging to the rocks at low tide.

And while they don't

offer much, calorically,

these tiny mollusks are the first

significant source of protein

the team's had

since arriving on the island.

[Amber] Ooh, boy!

- We goin' to be feastin' tonight, boys.

- [Jill] That's right.

[Amber] We got food! We got protein. Yeah.

Everybody get in here.

We need, like, a camp name.

Come here.

We are. We're Team Alpha.

- There's a feather.

- [Jill] We're missing one.

[Amber] Where you at, Lee?

[Lee coughing]

- Yeah.

- Oh God!

[Amber] Lee, would you like to say

something to the people at home?

- [Lee coughs]

- [Jill] That cough is worrisome.

Is what I wanna say to the people at home.

[coughing]

[Amber]

Okay, we're gonna get you some soup.

[narrator] Night falls,

along with the temperature

[Lee coughing]

and Lee's health

takes a turn for the worse.

[Lee groaning and coughing]

- [Lee] Ow. [bleep]

- [Justin] You all right?

[coughing]

My body's just breaking down.

The cold just seized up my whole back.

[groans]

My arms are going numb. Oh, man. [bleep]

[coughing]

I think I'm getting bronchitis.

I can't breathe at night.

Hurts every time I cough,

like somebody's sticking a fork

in your lungs.

[coughing]

[intense music playing]

[sniffles]

[sobbing]

This morning, when we got up, um,

we found Lee in tears.

I just got nothing left.

He was ready to tap out.

[grunts]

Between the constant rain

and 30-degree temperatures,

I haven't been sleeping.

Every night it's a struggle

just to get to the daylight.

I know I'm at the end of my rope.

I'm tapping out.

I'm a United States Marine.

I was in a Special Operations group.

I thought I could do this,

but it's just sapped everything I had.

I thought I had a lot more. I did.

That just kicked my a*s.

I blame the other team

for my guy quitting this morning.

When we saw those flares go off,

it was kind of that

epiphany moment, like [gasps]

"It's that easy."

"And all this is over."

[intense music playing]

[Jill] "No more sleepless nights,

no more hunger pain."

"That could be me."

And it is now. He's gone.

Goodbye.

[Amber] Bye, Lee.

[Jill] But we're not gonna dwell

on the negativity,

because we are gonna

win this thing, three strong.

We're gonna keep fighting

this [bleep] rain.

That's the only choice we have.

We're gonna keep going.

[narrator]

Lee's the fourth player to tap out

and the first loss for Team Alpha.

His departure leaves just 12 players

remaining in the game

with a million dollars still at stake.

Alpha losing its first player

also marks a promising milestone

for current front-runner, Team Delta.

[Joel] Oh, man. That's Alpha.

Oh [bleep] yeah. That's Alpha unit.

That means one is out of everybody but us.

- [Jordan] Godspeed, whoever that is.

- [Joel] Safe travels.

[Dawn] I don't wanna cheer, but I do.

I almost wish

I could see another flare go up.

We're the only four left.

It's pretty clear that as soon

as people start dropping,

the dominoes fall, you know.

[Jordan] I'm assuming the reason

the other teams are having a hard time

is their shelters aren't as good,

their morale isn't as good.

Now, they don't even have

the numbers we have.

The longer we can stay four,

the better our odds

as people start to flex out

because it's just too much work

for two people.

We're just gonna keep pushing

and working on our thing,

and it's pretty evident everyone else

is starting to self-destruct.

They took the dirty Delta.

- We're doing pretty good. We got all four.

- Dirty Delta? [laughs]

- Four strong.

- [Jordan] Let's go fishing.

[wind howling]

[Paul] We may see another flare

here in a little while

if that wind keeps whipping up.

[narrator] The next 48 hours

bring nothing but more relentless rain

and frigid temperatures.

[Justin] The weather is terrible.

It's rainy. It's cold. Everybody's wet.

[narrator] The misery

of the Alaskan monsoons affects everyone.

But the task of survival demands work

every day in all conditions.

[narrator] But day seven

finally brings some ease.

- The sunshine is out. Yes!

- [Jill laughs]

When the sun came out,

that was a huge relief.

Oh Jesus,

I didn't know you were a ballerina.

[Angie] It's a complete rainbow!

You hear that?

Something's going on.

It's down by the beach.

For the first time in five days,

the sound of approaching helicopters

signaling the arrival of a resource drop.

Delivered simultaneously to each team

without prior warning,

these drops can contain two things

[Javier] There it is.

a message from the Game Masters

containing new rules and directives

"Follow the river east.

Dungeness crab live in the deeper seas."

and valuable supplies and tools that can

shape the future of the game for players

that know how to use them.

[Javier] Cat food?

No, it's gonna be some kind of meat.

[narrator] Today's drop contains both.

In addition to all the materials

necessary to build a raft

Hammer time.

It's perfect.

[narrator] and navigate the waters

around the island

[Nick] I hoped we would get binocs.

"Utilize the tides to help you

get to the island and to get you home."

There's coordinates. You have the map?

a message from the Game Masters

presents an opportunity to the teams.

Beachcombing the island

will yield you pots.

Woo!

That's big, guys.

[narrator] Due east, across 1,200 meters

of frigid water, there's another island,

beyond which are fertile fishing grounds

for Dungeness crab.

Hidden across the island

are five crab traps known as pots.

Time to build a boat.

[narrator] Any team able

to seize one or more of the traps

will have earned the means

to harvest a valuable source of protein.

But reaching the other island

will require not just fashioning a raft,

but timing the journey

with a powerful outgoing tide.

Which means the first window

of opportunity is just three hours away.

If the other groups get the same stuff,

they're gonna be after the same traps,

so this is something we can't wait on.

[narrator] At Team Charlie

It's sized well.

Seth takes the lead in designing

and building the team's raft.

I like to think of myself as an engineer.

Yeah, so the boat is gonna be

pretty simplistic.

We don't have a lot

of time to construct it

if we want to beat the tide.

These were all cut for the shelter,

but since new challenges arise,

we're gonna dual-purpose everything.

These pieces are gonna make a raft.

The idea of it is kinda like one

of those fishing pontoon chairs.

Two on the other side,

two logs for the seat to sit on.

So hopefully, my whole body's

not submerged in water.

It's gotta be light.

Light as possible,

but it's gotta be buoyant.

[Seth] If you sink your boat,

hypothermia's gonna be

a big risk factor out here for sure.

But as a team that hasn't gotten

a lot of food out here,

I think that risk

is definitely worth the reward.

Especially with something

as high in protein as crab is.

We want crabs, right?

Crabs, baby.

[narrator] At Bravo Camp,

before building their raft,

Javier proposes a change in strategy.

Everything tells me

it doesn't feel right building it here.

I think getting closer is a better idea.

So that's it? You want to walk

everything down to the beach?

- It's gonna take forever.

- We gotta go quite a distance.

It's nearly a mile.

So initially, Brian was like,

let's launch this raft from here,

out in front of our campsite,

and float down a mile to the island

where apparently these crab traps are.

I wanted to change tactics.

[narrator] With Bravo Camp located

furthest from the island they must reach,

Javier's come to the conclusion,

assembling and launching

the raft further downstream

is the best bet

to reach the island safely.

Doing so will mean a shorter journey

across the water,

but may make it harder to catch

the Neka River's swift-moving currents.

[Brian] Maybe Javier's right.

And in the end,

we have to work together to survive.

So I give in.

He makes the last decision, as usual.

[Javier] Come on, Brian.

I try to give as many

perspectives as possible.

I hope Brian doesn't see it

as me barking orders.

It's just me trying to care for him.

[narrator] Across the Neka,

Team Delta looks

to leverage their superior numbers

to quickly construct

a significantly larger craft.

[Joel] We're uniquely positioned

to take our unfair advantage of four

and make that exponentially

more of an advantage.

I've actually built

a few rafts in my youth.

This boat's gonna have

to have some fortitude.

[Paul] I'm gonna have

to cut some little gussets

so these poles

laying long-ways won't shift.

- That's a must.

- [Jordan] Yeah.

I gotta give our group credit.

We are some resourceful a*s mofos

out here, right now.

Our catamaran slash drone-inspired

raft design's coming together.

It's gonna have inner tube, inner tube.

You'll have a crossbeam

underneath the main structure

lashed to the inner tube.

It sets us up

a little bit higher off the water.

- We've got good stability.

- [Joel] Yep.

Support from the cross structures.

That's gonna be the thing that

keeps us nice and balanced on the raft.

We gotta think long-term with this thing.

We've got crabbing pots.

We're using that for the duration,

so it's worth the extra effort.

We're really putting out

a lot of energy into this raft,

thinking it's gonna

be worth the investment.

[Joel] Do individual lashings,

because if one fails, one fails.

This isn't just gonna be

a one-time use craft.

We're gonna be able

to go out in farther water,

get more fish,

hopefully get some damn crab.

But another thing too

is we're able to cross the river now

and go pay our friends

across the river a visit.

Maybe get in their heads too.

And then, we also have our devious plan.

Master plan is we're the first one there.

We don't know if the others

will find crab pots.

[tense music playing]

[narrator] Back on the other shore,

Javier and Brian's journey downriver

takes them through Alpha's territory,

where Justin has spent

the last several hours

working on a raft of his own.

- [Brian] Hey.

- [Javier] Hey.

[Justin] Javier, right?

[Javier] Yeah.

- [Justin] What's the game plan now?

- Go visit the island.

[Justin] I'm gonna suggest something.

If I get there first, you wanna split 'em?

[Brian] Say we get there before you,

you want to split 'em.

- We'll make a deal.

- Whoever gets there first.

If I get there first,

I'm willing to share equally.

If you get there first,

you be willing to do that.

[Brian] I give Justin a lot of credit.

Sharing crab pots, it's a good idea.

All right, I say let's do it.

We'll split the pots. All right, deal?

they form an alliance,

hedging their bets in this race

against their rivals on the other side.

The other teams can do what they want.

Javier and Brian position themselves

and begin to assemble the raft.

[Javier] Gotta MacGyver this sh*t.

With these straps, I have two more.

The tube concept

came from some documentary

about the Alcatraz escape that I've seen.

So, if the guys in Alcatraz

could get off that island

and get to the shore, we could

definitely get to those crab pots.

[narrator] Meanwhile, back upriver,

Justin of Team Alpha

resumes work on his design,

a craft nearly twice the size of Bravo's.

[Justin] I'm trying to construct a boat

that'll be like anything

anyone else has made.

I'd rather take my time

and make something that's efficient.

So, it's like The Tortoise

and the Hare right now.

You know, it's a marathon not a sprint.

This thing he's building

is way beyond an elaborate boat.

Justin's been working on that boat,

and it's taking too long.

It's not practical,

and it's costing us time.

We should've already been downstream.

[narrator] As Justin

continues work on his craft

[intense music playing]

[Angie] It's looking really steady.

[narrator] the other teams put

the finishing touches on theirs

All right, here we go.

Yeah, pull it tight

and then start wrapping it.

[narrator] scrambling to catch

the outgoing tide to the island first.

Our window was closing.

That just meant it was go time.

[narrator] While, per Javier's plan,

Brian of Bravo Team prepares

to launch from far downstream.

[Paul] They don't even

have 'em blew up right.

Oh, this is bad. I hope

they've got Coast Guard close by.

This vessel is going down.

[laughs]

[Jordan] Three, two, one, go!

[narrator] Team Delta moves their craft

into position to catch the current

and quickly decide who will take the helm.

[Jordan] We had a decision to make.

Who's willing to risk it all?

Who's willing to get out in the water

and risk that exposure,

that wetness, and risk going home?

Jordan, you're our guy. I'm so glad.

You're out on this bad boy.

Coming out of the military,

I've had previous training

in exactly a scenario just like this.

Dude, you're gonna k*ll it.

And my team elected me

to go out there first.

[narrator] Thirty meters downstream

And now this one.

as their rivals Delta

make their final preparations,

Team Charlie considers

a last-minute change in strategy.

- [Angie] Ready?

- [Seth] Yeah.

[Nick] The wind's starting to blow too.

We should hurry it up.

[Seth] Move around a bit.

Can you do that?

Look at this.

I was originally gonna man the raft

before we got to the water

I'm not gonna lie, I'm nervous.

But you guys are heavier than I am.

- [Seth] Yeah.

- It'll go deeper.

[Seth] Probably want

a nice wider stance on it.

- [Angie] I got it.

- [Seth] Look at me. You sure you want to?

[Angie] Yeah. I got it.

But during the process, Angie,

she looked me in the eye.

She's like, "I got this."

[Angie] Ready?

[Seth] Can we talk it over with Nick?

[Nick] Watching that river,

it was a real anxious feeling

because we had this makeshift inner tube

made out of alder, lashed together thing,

that is supposed

to navigate this wild current.

Let me try standing on it real quick.

[Angie] It floats with me on it.

When he stood on it, it's not gonna

[Seth] It's not gonna happen with you.

This is all seriously scary.

So, I was not feeling confident

with Angie's ability.

- You wanna do this?

- Yeah.

- Are you sure?

- I'm 100% confident.

Look at me, hey. If you go out there,

you can't not make it.

[Nick] You gotta make it.

[Angie] I know. I would let you know

if I can't do something.

I have a really strong background

in swimming,

and I am very cold tolerant.

Dude, I weigh less.

It's going to float more.

It'll get me out of the water more.

- I'm very good on the water.

- [Nick] I'm hesitant.

I think Seth's the best shot.

I don't think Angie can make this.

[Angie] Why do you think that?

The lightest person on the raft

may not have the physical strength

to steer the thing.

It steers like a pig.

And we're starving,

and we need to win this.

The best bet is Seth.

You're really about to spark something

in me right now

because what I'm telling you is

So, of course, I snap back but

These tires are tiny as hell!

Obviously, you're another person

I have to prove wrong.

That's what I'm here to do,

prove everybody wrong.

Maybe I'm wrong.

- [Angie] I know you're wrong.

So, I like to sit back,
