01x01 - Kabane

Post by bunniefuu »

Hey, is it true he's comin' from Tokyo?

And he's gonna be stayin'

over at Yat-chan's place.

I wonder what he's like.

Maybe he's comin' here to recruit you.

How so?

I mean, Yat-chan, you're smart,

and you can run fast, plus you're rich.

"You belong in Tokyo, not here in this

backwater. Won't you come with me?"

Or whatever.

Hey, can we come by later

to see the guy from Tokyo?

Just for a quick spell.

So long as you're not disturbin' our guest.

--Yes!

--Yes!

Dorotabo! You can't come!

Don't want the guy from Tokyo

gettin' a whiff of you!

Right. I'll be careful.

"Kemono Jihen"

Oh, give me a break, man.

"Episode 1: Kabane"

Oh, give me a break, man.

"Episode 1: Kabane"

I can't afford a flat out here.

Are you the man from Tokyo?

Are you my client?

I'm the hostess of Kanoko Villa.

I'll send someone to fix this later.

Would you come with me now?

We can speak in the car.

The bodies are all rottin'.

Livestock that was up and

around yesterday, gone overnight.

Is that somethin' that humans can do?

Everybody's terribly spooked.

Uh-huh.

I still haven't told the children

nothin' about this.

I don't want them to get scared

and stop goin' to school.

And if the children are

affected by this somehow

Well, I don't need any funny rumors

gettin' started, neither.

I hope we can keep this between us.

Of course. Discretion is our specialty.

I am a detective, after all.

Yeah

You stick out like a sore thumb

in that outfit, considerin'.

Well, thank you.

"Kanoko Villa"

Well, thank you.

"Kanoko Villa"

I hate having to leave

changing my tire up to you,

I hate having to leave

changing my tire up to you,

and if you'll bill me for

everything you need later

Very well.

Yikes!

I like it out here. It's nice and relaxed.

I saw a number of wild deer on the way in.

They're the local specialty of our village.

We even keep a head count,

to make sure there's no harm done to them.

Oh, yeah?

Hello there! Excuse me for dropping by!

Wow, quite the hard worker. Or maybe

he's just shy around strangers.

He doesn't look like he's just home from school.

Does he stay home from school to work?

I'll fill you in later.

Coming to a hot spring on business is the best!

Pardon the intrusion!

May I wash your back?

Yeah, just a second.

Oh, you're one of those kids from earlier.

I am the hostess's son, Yataro.

I will be serving your needs

during your stay with us.

I understand you are from Tokyo, sir.

That must be nice. The city

has everything, doesn't it?

Your car is also very cool. Everyone says so.

I'd like to move to the city when I grow up.

Yeah, is that right?

Oh, don't tell my mother, though.

She insists that I take over the inn.

Speaking of which,

I was asking your mother earlier

You have another boy here, right?

Oh, you mean Dorotabo?

"Dorotabo"?

It's a nickname. He gets

covered with dirt and manure

working in the fields every day,

so we call him Dorotabo.

It's the name of the yokai

that live in the fields.

He must have been born with it,

but his body odor is awful,

so we can't let him do this kind of work

around other people, you know?

Sounds interesting.

Hey, that was a terrific soak.

I'm glad to hear it.

So, I was wondering, ma'am

Yataro-kun, was it? The boy

who was waiting on me?

Uh-huh

Here comes the compliment.

"You have a very capable boy."

Could I request Dorotabo-kun instead?

Huh?

You want me to wait on him?

He insisted.

I've never done this before.

Just use your head, and do your best.

Pardon the intrusion.

Oh, here you are.

Haven't seen you since yesterday.

I've been waiting for you.

Do you remember me?

Yes.

Here is your breakfast. Please excuse me.

Oh, hold on, hold on, hold on!

Good grief.

Here, let me introduce myself.

"Inugami Strangeness Counseling Office"

"Inugami Kohachi, Director"

Here, let me introduce myself.

"Inugami Strangeness Counseling Office"

"Inugami Kohachi, Director"

This is who I am.

I'm like a detective that

specializes in the occult,

and I'm here on an investigation.

I'd like to hear what everyone

has to say, you see.

Thank you for this breakfast.

You're out in the fields every day, right?

Anything strange ever happen?

Let me hear all about it while I'm eating.

All right, after breakfast.

Hmm?

I don't want to spoil your meal.

Oh, no problem, no problem.

I've got a pretty high tolerance for this--

eating meat while hearing about gore and such.

No, it's not that.

None of the others at the inn

ever take their meals with me.

They say I smell.

Oh, yeah?

Us guys shouldn't mind how we smell.

The place where I work out of

is an all-guy establishment, you know.

Pee-yew.

All the girls come by with

this kind of look on their faces.

Is that right? Well, um, in that case

Yeah, go right ahead.

The investigation you're conducting

deals with our rotting

livestock carcasses, right?

How do you know that? The hostess

said she hasn't told anyone.

I've been tasked with disposing of the bodies.

Up to now, there have been

six of them that have died.

Many of them have been chickens.

Their bodies all share the similarity

of having their organs chewed up.

If there were any monsters in the world,

it looks like something they would do.

Also, you may have already heard this,

but I always have to dispose of the bodies

the morning after the new moon.

It's possible that something will happen

during the next new moon, too.

That's outstanding! Now that I know

this much, the rest will be easy!

They say that it's the quiet ones that

see what's going on around them,

and it's true, isn't it? Let's see,

the next new moon will be

in five more days.

Sir, what are you doin'?

Oh, hi there, ma'am.

I had some free time,

so as part of my investigation,

I asked Dorotabo-kun to let me

help out with his work.

Right, Dorotabo-kun?

Right.

What's that guy from Tokyo doin'

out there with Dorotabo?

How come, Yat-chan?

They got everythin' in Tokyo,

but know-nothin' idiots must be kinda rare.

It feels good working the fields,

but it's hard on the back.

Inugami-san, your posture is all wrong.

You lean too far forward.

Now you're going and speaking your mind.

By the way, I've been wondering something.

That thing you've got hanging around your neck--

What kind of stone is that?

You mean this?

They say I had it on me ever since I was a baby.

It probably belonged to my parents.

I was abandoned, so

May I see it?

Okay.

Yeah, I thought as much.

This is called a "lifestone." They're only

formed under special circumstances.

There's some component

that only exists within this stone

which makes it a precious stone in that regard.

It's not the sort of thing you'd

leave a child you're abandoning.

There must be some reason why

the inn hostess had to take you in.

But you were not abandoned.

Is that right?

Would you like to meet your parents?

Huh?

If they're alive, I may be able

to track them down.

I am a detective, after all.

I've never thought about it before.

I'm not really sure.

But

I may want to meet them

Okay, okay.

The new moon.

I'm waiting for Inugami-san

Yataro?

What are you gettin' so full of yourself for?

You're doin' this when you know

I wanna go to Tokyo!

Is this supposed to be payback?!

Who do you think you are?!

Never forget that you're here

'cause your parents abandoned you!

Put yourself in me or Mom's shoes,

havin' to take care of you

just because you're my cousin!

I wasn't abandoned.

Huh?

I wasn't abandoned.

You think you're in any position

to talk back?! Remember who you are!

Don't go gettin' the wrong idea,

just 'cause you have this! Give it to me!

Give it to me, I'm gettin' rid of it!

That hurt You lousy Dorotabo

You lousy Dorotabo

G-- Give it back

Stay away from me.

It was me.

I'm the culprit.

I'm the monster!

Dorotabo, you may wonder why I would

suddenly say what I'm about to say

but let me show you my rear end.

But just this one time, because these

are special circumstances.

A tail?

From times of yore,

there have been beings who

lurk in the world's shadows,

involved with humans, but undetected

by them, known as Kemono.

Kemono don't usually involve

themselves with people directly.

But recently, there have been some

who have become more

deeply involved than necessary.

Like, say, having children with them.

There have been multiple cases

like that reported.

And Dorotabo, you are a hanyo,

the child of a human and a ghoul,

a bloodless demon.

Demon?

Take it easy. I'm not a human, either.

I'm a bake-danuki.

And as for that lifestone your parents left you,

it prevents your monster-specific

"thirst" from manifesting.

To put it more simply, it keeps you from

impulsively attacking people.

As long as you have that stone,

you can remain a person.

A person?

You aren't the one who k*lled those animals.

There's something else.

Yataro

Yataro is outside. He doesn't know

about these incidents.

When I was five,

I once k*lled Dorotabo.

I was horsin' around and

pushed him into the canal,

but he bumped his head,

and somethin' that wasn't blood,

somethin' white, came oozin' out,

and I got scared and ran away.

But he came back unhurt in time for supper.

It wasn't my imagination.

I didn't dream it!

Damn it!

Yataro!

Hold on a minute. Ghouls don't die

when you k*ll them,

but if you cut off their heads,

they stop moving around.

I'll see to Yataro first, and--

Oh not bad.

Bite marks.

Dorotabo!

I'm fine.

Inugami-san!

Tch, that's one thick neck.

Hey!

That was close.

N-Not bad.

What now, though? I can't stay here anymore.

Yataro now knows what I really am.

All of these incidents

will probably be pinned on me.

You're right about that.

I do have one very attractive idea, though.

The truth is, Dorotabo,

I've been hired to k*ll you.

My client is the hostess.

See, she knew who you really are.

She heard when she took you in

from her older sister, your mother.

She didn't tell anyone else all this time,

but with these latest events,

she secretly made up her mind

to have you k*lled.

And, although the true culprit

was something else,

with Yataro ending up like this

She wouldn't believe me if I told her,

but most importantly,

it works out better this way.

I see.

Very well. Your reasoning makes sense.

Tell me, what is your real name?

Kabane.

Okay, Kabane, I'll ask you one last time

Do you want to meet your parents?

No. Please k*ll me.

All right, then.

Yataro!

Not to worry, he's just been knocked out.

Did Kabane do this?

As you requested, I took care of the culprit.

If you like, I can dispose of

the body for you, as well.

Discretion is our specialty, after all.

Yeah, I shut it up tight

to make sure it doesn't regenerate.

I buried it underground, so be sure to

take care of it for me afterward.

Come on, you can at least do that much.

I'll text you the location later.

Oh, you're awake?

"Salmon roe" "Tuna & mayo"

"Salmon roe" "Tuna & mayo"

You must be hungry, right?

You've been out nearly a whole day.

Um

Hmm?

Aren't I supposed to be dead?

I told you, ghouls don't die when you k*ll them.

Also, Kemono heal a lot quicker than people do.

The place where I shot you

is already healed over, right?

Although yeah, you are dead.

At least, Dorotabo is.

Where are we?

Tokyo.

Okay, we're here, Kabane.

A store?

Watch your step, now.

Welcome to the Inugami

Strangeness Counseling Office.

We're going to have to do something

about your clothes, huh?

Oh, that will work. Change into this.

Let's see, that leaves There it is.

We cover up our Kemono musk

using this. You can have this one.

I'm going to go change

and take care of a few things.

Make yourself comfortable anywhere.

An office?

It's a little big on me.

We're back! Oh, am I hungry!

I get first dibs on the bath, okay?

--Inugami-san, can we order pizza?

--Hey, did you hear me?

We got a pizza circular

in our mail slot! It must be

a sign from heaven to have pizza today

--Who're you?

--Who're you?
