ARI: Come on! Come on!

We're almost there!

MIRI: [baby noise]

ARI: [chirping]

I wonder what she's like?

OLIVE: Who, your dad's friend?

ARI: Yeah, my dad said Dr. June Groundhog is really cool,

and that we're going to love meeting her.

Ooh, I know. Maybe she's a cool alien from space!

[Alien Voice] Hello! Welcome to our planet!

ELINOR: [giggles] That would be pretty cool.

ARI: Or maybe she's a robot who lives in a cave

but then we find out she's actually a superhero!

[gasps]

OLIVE: [giggles] Ari, you sure have a wild imagination.

ARI: Hey it's just something I do, you know?

I can't help myself, fun ideas just pop into my head.

ARI: Let's go!

Here we are!

ELINOR: Look, it's Moose Mountain.

OLIVE: Wow, it's so big.

And it does look like the antler of a moose.

ARI: Hmm, she was supposed to meet us here.

DR. JUNE GROUNDHOG: Hello!

ARI: [screams]

DR. JUNE: Oh, sorry to startle you. I was looking for my shadow.

OLIVE: Are you Mr. Bat's friend?

DR. JUNE: I am!

I'm Dr. June Groundhog, nice to meet you.

MR. BAT: Ah, I see you met.

Dr. June, this is Ari, Elinor and Olive.

ARI: Don't forget Robin!

MR. BAT: [laughs] Ah, yes, of course, and Robin.

ELINOR: Dr. June, did you say you were looking for your shadow?

DR. JUNE: I did! I was trying to find out what the weather was like.

Oh! If you see your shadow when you're outside, it means the sun is out!

Oh! [laughs] There you are!

Ah, yes, it's definitely sunny.

Isn't that right, shadow?

[goofy voice] Oh yes! Me and the sun are old friends.

KIDS: [giggles]

MR. BAT: Dr. June is a weather scientist,

and she's here to study the weather around Animal Town.

DR. JUNE: Mm-hmm. I'm going to take some measurements here.

And then hike up Moose Mountain to get measurements there too.

ARI: You're going to hike up Moose Mountain?

DR. JUNE: Oh yeah!

It's all so we scientists can make better predictions about the weather.

OLIVE: Oh, we know what a prediction is, Dr. June.

ELINOR: That's when you say what you think might happen in the future.

DR. JUNE: Exactly!

ARI: That is so cool!

DR. JUNE: It is so cool!

MR. BAT: Could we help you, Dr. June?

DR. JUNE: Oh I was hoping you'd say that!

Everyone can be part of observing the weather.

KIDS: [cheers]

[Eagle cries]

OLIVE: Look, it's an eagle.

DR. JUNE: This is called a weather station, and it helps us measure

different things about the weather, like temperature, and rain, and wind.

ARI: That is so cool. I love the weather.

When it's sunny, or rainy, or hot or cold.

Oh, I know! Robin, let's pretend that you're a tree.

And I'll be the weather!

[Robin voice] Okay!

You're a tree high up in the mountains.

And here comes Ari, the biggest cloud in the world!

Whoosh!

And now I'm the wind! Pshoo!

Pshooh-!

[Eagle cries]

ARI: Screech?

ARI: Um, that's not what the wind sounds like.

[Eagle chirps] [gasps]

[Eagle cries]

ARI: Robin!

ELINOR: That eagle took Robin!

ARI: Why did the eagle take Robin?

DR. JUNE: Uh, the eagle must have thought Robin was a real bird

and grabbed it by accident.

But, this is strange.

Eagles from this area usually go south for the winter.

ARI: Dad, can we go rescue Robin?

MR. BAT: We could try to follow it at a distance and see if it drops Robin somewhere.

ELINOR: We'll go with you, Ari!

OLIVE: I saw the eagle go that way, towards Moose Mountain.

MIRI: [cries]

MR. BAT: Oh. Hmm.

I don't know if Miri is up for that long of a hike.

DR. JUNE: I have an idea, Mr. Bat.

Why don't you take Miri home, and I'll take the kids to follow the eagle.

MR. BAT: Thank you, Dr. June. [Miri yawns]

ELINOR: Don't worry, Ari. I'm sure we'll find Robin.

OLIVE: Yeah! We'll have him back in no time!

DR. JUNE: Are you kids ready?

ARI: Mm-hm!

OLIVE: See you later!

ELINOR: Moose Mountain, here we come!

DR. JUNE: Woo! Let's take a break here.

Does anyone need a snack?

ELINOR: [gasps]

Ari! Olive! Freeze!

You're sitting right under a beehive!

OLIVE: Oh no!

I don't want honey to fall on me!

ARI: I do!

What? I like honey with my crackers.

ELINOR: Wait, where are the bees?

OLIVE: Yeah, there are usually bees buzzing around a beehive.

DR. JUNE: That's a good observation, kids.

Listen closely.

ARI: I hear a buzzing sound.

ELINOR: It's coming from inside.

So there are bees.

DR. JUNE: Yes!

During winter when it's cold, bees stay inside their hives and cozy up together.

So some bees get plumper and others keep moving and shaking to keep warm.

ELINOR: That is so interesting!

I always wondered what bees do in the winter.

DR. JUNE: Yup, bees can stay in their hives all winter long.

OLIVE: Wait, there's one coming out!

DR. JUNE: Huh. That's strange.

ARI: Hey little bee, winter isn't over yet!

ELINOR: Another bee came out.

But, why are they coming out?

DR. JUNE: I- I don't know.

ELINOR: Hmm.

Ari, you're really good about coming up with ideas.

Can you imagine why the bees might be coming out so early?

ARI: Oh no!

The last time I used my imagination,

an eagle took Robin away!

OLIVE: Ari, it wasn't your fault that the eagle took Robin.

ARI: Uh-uh!

DR. JUNE: Ari, imagination is an important part of learning about the world.

It's how scientists come up with explanations and ideas to help them solve problems.

ARI: Hmm. Okay, okay.

I'll use my imagination!

Okay, what if one of the bees was sleeping.

But then it had a dream that it was playing soccer, and when it was wiggling around,

it bumped into the hive's alarm clock and made it go off too soon,

waking up all the bees.

Huh? Huh?

OLIVE: That's a good idea.

ARI: I knew it! I shouldn't be using my imagination any more!

DR. JUNE: Now wait a minute, Ari.

Now that you mention it, bees do sort of have an alarm clock.

They use temperature to know when it's time to come out of their hive.

When the weather gets warm enough, that's how they know that winter is coming to an end.

ELINOR: Hmm.

Maybe it's warmer than it usually is, and that's what's making the bees come out.

DR. JUNE: Ah, I think you might be right, Elinor.

You see sometimes when the weather changes in a way

that animals and plants aren't expecting, it can confuse them.

ELINOR: It sounds like we need more observations!

DR. JUNE: Yes. And when we put the weather station up in the mountain,

we'll know more.

But great job coming up with an explanation, kids.

OLIVE: Ari's idea helped!

ARI: Hmm, I'm not sure about that.

DR. JUNE: Of course it did!

Using your imagination, it doesn't always give you the right idea,

but it can help you think in new and different ways.

Now, should we keep going?

OLIVE: Yeah!

ELINOR: Let's go!

ARI: Yeah, let's go find Robin!

♪♪♪

ELINOR: Look, it's a lake.

OLIVE: It looks like the water is frozen now.

[knock knock knock]

ARI: Yup, it's solid ice.

DR. JUNE: Wait, Ari!

We have to check the ice to make sure it's thick enough to walk on.

ARI: Yeah. I knew that.

DR. JUNE: See, the water is still liquid underneath.

ELINOR: I see some fish!

OLIVE: I just read about this in my Nature book.

When a lake freezes over, only the top turns to ice,

and all the fish underneath go and rest at the bottom.

ARI: Um, those fish don't look like they're resting.

They're swimming around!

DR. JUNE: Hmm, that's strange.

Yep, the ice is thinner than it normally is at this time of year.

ELINOR: Is it too thin to walk on?

DR. JUNE: Unfortunately, it is.

OLIVE: And look at the other side, it's not frozen at all.

ARI: Why isn't the whole lake frozen?

ELINOR: Hmm.

Water turns from solid ice to liquid when it gets warmer.

So, maybe it's starting to get warm?

DR. JUNE: You're right, Elinor.

But, it's not usually warm enough to melt the ice at this time of year.

OLIVE: Is that why the fish aren't resting?

Sometimes when I get too warm, I can't sleep either.

DR. JUNE: Yes, good thinking!

I'll need to come back and check on the fish another time.

ARI: Right now we have to figure out

how we're going to get across water that's solid and liquid!

ELINOR: Hmm.

I know!

When we need a solution, the first thing to do is draw out the problem.

OLIVE: On it!

Okay, we're on one side of the lake, and we need to get to the other side.

But, some of the lake is solid ice, and some is liquid water.

DR. JUNE: We could use the boat!

But the boat won't move on the ice.

ELINOR: Ari, do you have any ideas?

ARI: Are you sure you want my ideas?

OLIVE: Yeah!

ELINOR: Of course!

ARI: Hmm.

Ok. Here we go.

What if... we build a car that has legs on it!

Yeah, maybe the car can wear skis!

And then it can walk over the ice!

But then when it gets to the water, the car grows wings, and it flies to the other side!

Huh? Pretty simple huh?

What do you think?

ELINOR: Hmm.

Ari, this is a great idea!

ARI: It is?

ELINOR: Yeah, maybe we can put those skis on the boat, and use them to slide across the ice.

Then when we get to the water, the boat can just float to the other side.

DR. JUNE: Wow, kids, great problem-solving!

See, using your imagination is also good for coming up with solutions!

The more ideas you have, the better your solution will be.

ARI: Mm-hm!

DR. JUNE: Let's get to work!

OLIVE: It's working!

ELINOR: Here comes the water!

♪♪♪

ELINOR: Woo-hoo! Yeah! ARI: We did it!

DR. JUNE: [chuckles] Great job, kids!

ARI: Robin, here we come!

[computer beeping]

DR. JUNE: Thank you for letting me stop to fix up this weather station, kids.

Now I'll be able to see patterns in how the weather changes from year to year.

ELINOR: Like how it changes from winter to spring?

DR. JUNE: Uh, not quite, Elinor.

Weather can change from year to year.

We call that “climate.”

For example, if the climate is getting warmer,

that means that each year the summers are a little bit hotter,

and the winters are a little less cold.

DR. JUNE: Now, I think we're getting close to where the eagles are, so remember,

we should keep our distance and not disturb them.

ARI: Okay but, where are they?

[Eagle cries in distance]

[Eagle cries] OLIVE: There they are!

ELINOR: Wow, the eagles nest is so big!

[gasp] I see eggs!

The eagles have eggs!

OLIVE: Aww, they're going to have baby eagles.

ARI: I see the eagles, and the eggs.

But, where's Robin?

DR. JUNE: Hmm. The eagle must have dropped Robin somewhere.

ARI: Dropped him? But where?

Robin could be anywhere!

Now how are we ever going to find him?

ELINOR: We can't give up now, Ari.

OLIVE: Yeah, maybe there's a way to find him?

ARI: Hmm.

I could use my imagination?

Using our imagination can help you come up with ideas, so maybe it can help us find Robin.

ELINOR: Oh, that's a great idea, Ari!

OLIVE: Yeah, we can pretend to be the eagle carrying Robin,

and maybe that will give us ideas about where he was dropped.

DR. JUNE: Fantastic!

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: Go ahead, Ari!

Use your imagination.

ARI: Mmm, maybe this time we can all use our imagination-

together!

ELINOR: Okay yeah, let's do it!

OLIVE: Sure!

ARI: Okay, I'm an eagle, and I just grabbed Robin.

ELINOR: Mm-hmm, and then I'm flying through the air.

OLIVE: And then I do some awesome eagle flips!

ARI: Ok, after I do some awesome eagle flips, I,

oh, I get hungry.

I need a snack. But what do I eat?

Um, what do eagles eat?

DR. JUNE: Well, if the eagles stayed,

it must be because they found things to eat nearby, like fish or small birds.

ELINOR: The fish!

The warmer climate made the ice in the lake melt,

so the fish stopped resting sooner.

OLIVE: So now the eagle could see them.

ARI: Yeah, so now I want to grab a fish.

But I can't, because I'm holding on to Robin.

So, I drop Robin.

ELINOR: Maybe the eagle dropped Robin near the lake!

DR. JUNE: Way to use your imagination, kids!

Let's go look by the lake.

ARI: Hold on, Robin, we're coming!

[Eagle chirps]

Robin! Where are you?

OLIVE: [gasps] Over there! Look!

ARI: Robin!

♪♪♪

Oh, Robin! We thought we'd lost you!

KIDS: [cheers]

Who's my favorite plushie friend that got grabbed by an eagle?

You are! Yes you are!

Uh, yeah, he's ok.

KIDS: [giggles] DR. JUNE: [giggles]

Well, that was an adventure.

ARI: You were right, Dr. June.

Imagination is good for lots of things.

It helps you come up with explanations to things you don't understand.

And ideas to solve problems.

What's that, Robin?

[whispers]

Uh, Robin wants to say thank you for finding him.

And me too. Thanks for coming with me to rescue him.

ELINOR: Of course!

OLIVE: We love you Robin!

DR. JUNE: Don't forget, never stop using your imagination.

Isn't that right, shadow?

Shadow?

[yelling] Shadow!

Huh, I guess it must be cloudy because I don't see my [laughs]

Listen [giggles]

Oh, you sneaky shadow!

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: We learned so many things today, about bees, and fish.

OLIVE: And eagles.

DR. JUNE: Yes, and about the weather.

Thank you for helping me set up the weather station, kids.

ELINOR: Now you can study how the weather changes from year to year!

OLIVE: Yeah, you can measure the climate.

DR. JUNE: Mm-hmm, it's importan to study the climate

because it can affect all the plants and animals, and us.

Will you help me keep track of the weather and the climate?

ARI: Uh huh! You betcha!

ELINOR: Yeah!

OLIVE: Of course!

ARI: And if there's a problem, I know exactly how we're going to solve it.

Using our imagination, and doing it together!
