I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EAT FIRST!!

I think Potluck Day might be my favorite day of the year.

ELINOR: [giggles] I love it too!

It's sooo interesting to taste everybody's favorite foods.

ARI: Oh, speaking of favorite foods!

[sniff] Let's go see what Olive and her mom made! [sniff]

ELINOR: [giggles]

OLIVE: Elinor, Ari!

ARI: Hi! ELINOR: Hi Olive!

MS. ELEPHANT: Hello, kids! I'm about to step out to buy more ingredients,

but help yourself to some curry!

ARI/ELINOR: Thanks, Ms. Elephant!

ARI: [sniff] Mmmmmm. Smells amazing!

OLIVE: It is amazing! It's veggie curry, my mom's specialty.

She learned how to make it from my nana, and I'm learning to make it from my mom.

I already wrote down all the most important ingredients.

Look!

ELINOR: [sniff] [sigh] It does smell delicious.

OLIVE: Curry's my favorite. I can't wait to share it with every-—

ARI: [munching] OHHHHH, THAT IS SPIIIICYYY!!

[sigh] [phew]

ELINOR: Ohhhh! That is spicy! It makes my mouth all tingly.

OLIVE: Huh. I must be used to spiciness. I only feel it a little bit. Is it okay?

ARI: Okay? I love it! [gulp]

Thiiiis iiiis theee beeeest!

[phew]

ELINOR/ARI: [giggles]

OLIVE: I'm glad you like it Ari, but if it's this spicy for you,

what if it's too spicy for everyone else?

What if they don't even want to try it?!

ELINOR: I'm sure they'll like it, Olive. It's really tasty!

OLIVE: Yeah, but maybe not everyone's used to food this spicy. I should go tell my mom.

ARI: She said she was going to buy more ingredients.

OLIVE: Let's go find her. C'mon!

ELINOR: Hmmm... I wonder what makes the curry spicy anyway.

Hmmm... maaaaybe it's spicy because it's heated up on the stove?

OLIVE: But I've had curry as cold leftovers, and it's still spicy!

ARI: Hmmm, it's a mystery...

OLIVE: A spicy mystery!

ARI: Hi, Mrs. Beaver! What food are you sharing today?

MRS. BEAVER: Hello, kids! Today, I'm sharing strawberry smoothies! Want some?

ELINOR: Yes!!

OLIVE: Mmmm, strawberry!

ARI: Strawberries are my favorite!

MRS. BEAVER: It all starts with a bit of ice!

Then you add your honey to make it sweet,

oat milk for creaminess,

and, of course, strawberries for strawberry-ness!

[Blender whirls] ELINOR: Oooh. [gasp]

KIDS: Mmmmm!

[gulping]

Ahhhh!

ARI: This must be the best, most strawberry-ee-est thing I've ever tasted.

ELINOR: Hmm... so adding the strawberries is what makes it taste so "strawberry-ee"?

MRS. BEAVER: That's right! The ingredients you put in food are what gives it its flavor.

ELINOR: That is so interesting!

Hmmm... Maybe Olive's Mom's curry is spicy because one of the ingredients makes it spicy?

OLIVE: I think you're right, Elinor!

Mrs. Beaver, we're looking for my Mom to tell her our curry is really spicy to some animals.

MRS. BEAVER: Oh! I just saw her go that way.

OLIVE: C'mon, we should catch up!

ARI: Bye, Mrs. Beaver! Thanks for the smoothies!

ELINOR: So, one of the ingredients in your Mom's curry is what makes it spicy.

I wonder which one?

OLIVE: Oh! I have the list of the ingredients right here!

ARI: But which one makes the curry spicy?

ELINOR: Well, let's see. The first ingredient is carrots.

I know those aren't spicy. My dad makes carrot stuff the time!

Carrot stew, carrot muffins, carrot pancakes - they're not spicy!

OLIVE: So it's not carrots...

ARI: Oh the next ingredient is potatoes; I know those don't make food spicy either!

I've had potato soup, mashed potatoes... none of that's spicy!

OLIVE: Potatoes are off the list!

So, the ingredient that makes the curry spicy must be one of these two.

ARI: What's this one?

OLIVE: This one's ginger.

ELINOR: Could it be ginger that makes the curry spicy?

MR. ANTELOPE: Hello, kids! Did someone say ginger?

Ginger cookies happen to be my specialty! Care to try some?

KIDS: Yes, please!

[munching] Mmm.

OLIVE: It's... a little spicy?

ELINOR: Yeah.

MR. ANTELOPE: That'll be the ginger! It's the ingredient that gives these cookies their taste.

So, what brings to the wonderful world of ginger, kids?

OLIVE: My mom and I made this curry,

but I'm worried animals who aren't used to spicy food won't enjoy it.

ELINOR: So we were wondering what ingredient makes the curry spicy?

MR. ANTELOPE: I see... And I have an idea.

Have a try of these cookies, too.

KIDS: [munching] [gulping]

ARI: Mmmm! Delicious, this is the best cookie I've ever had.

OLIVE: Yep, it's great, but it doesn't taste as gingery as the other one.

KIDS: [munching]

OLIVE: Mr. Antelope, why do these cookies taste so different?

MR. ANTELOPE: Well, I put less ginger in these and extra ginger in those.

ELINOR: Hmmm, so putting less ginger makes the cookies taste less ginger-y

and adding more makes them taste more ginger-y!

MR. ANTELOPE: That's exactly right, Elinor, very good!

OLIVE: But none of the cookies were spicy like the curry,

so ginger can't be our mystery ingredient!

ELINOR: Hmmm... It looks like there's only one ingredient left on this list.

This must be the one making the curry spicy!

OLIVE: Oh! That's a chili pepper.

ARI: A "chili pepper"? Never heard of it.

ELINOR: Me neither.

MR. ANTELOPE: Oh, well, you're in for a treat!

Ms. Llama has a whole CHILI-PEPPER SECTION at her fruit stand!

OLIVE: Hey, my mom's there right now!

Thanks for your help, Mr. Antelope. Let's go!

KIDS: Bye, Mr. Antelope!

ELINOR: Thanks for the cookies.

MR. ANTELOPE: Bye.

MS. LLAMA: Hello, children! Welcome!

KIDS: Hi, Ms. Llama!

MS. ELEPHANT: How are you three enjoying the potluck?

OLIVE: It's been great! Only... when Ari tried our curry, it was very spicy for him.

MS. ELEPHANT: Oh, did you not like it, Ari?

ARI: I loved it! It's delicious!!

[gulp]

Ohhhh! That is spicy!

[phew]

OLIVE: It made us wonder what makes curry spicy, and we figured it out!

ELINOR: First, we learned that ingredients are what give food their flavor.

Then we figured it must be the chili peppers that make this curry spicy!

MS. ELEPHANT: They sure do. I was just about to buy more now, see?

KIDS: Oooooohhhh....

MS. LLAMA: Mhm. Chili peppers are special veggies with big flavors.

Cultures all over the world use their own kinds of chili peppers in their cooking.

See here? I have habaneros, shishito and scotch bonnets!

ELINOR: All of these are chili peppers?

Wow! That is so interesting!

OLIVE: Mom, I'm worried some of the town folks aren't used to spicy food.

What if they don't like the curry?

MS. ELEPHANT: Huh. You're right, Olive;

not everyone enjoys the feeling of "spicy" in their mouth.

OLIVE: What can we do?

ARI: [munching] [gulp]

What? They're good cookies!

ELINOR: The cookies! I think I have an idea...

Remember how Mr. Antelope said if he added MORE ginger, his cookies tasted more gingery?

OLIVE: Yeah?

ELINOR: Well, why don't we do the same thing with the chilli peppers in your curry?

If we make it with less chili peppers, we'll have a--

LESS spicy curry. That is if Ari doesn't eat it all first.

OLIVE: Elinor, you're right! We can make TWO kinds of curry,

one with more chili peppers and one with less.

Then everyone can pick which they prefer!

ARI: Awesome! ELINOR: Awesome! Great idea!

MS. ELEPHANT: [chuckles] Yes! MS. LLAMA: Yes!

MS. ELEPHANT: It's always best for a grownup to chop chili peppers;

if you're not really careful, they can sting your eyes.

ELINOR/OLIVE: Yeah! ARI: Awesome!

OLIVE: Would you like spicy or non-spicy?

MRS. BEAVER: Non-spicy, please!

[gulp] Mmmm!

ELINOR: Wow, your stall must be the most popular one at the whole potluck!

OLIVE: I'm just so happy everyone can enjoy my favorite food! Thanks for your help.

ARI: [munching] Oooooh! That is spicy!

[phew]

OLIVE: Uh-oh, Ari. Did you accidentally choose a spicy curry?

ARI: Nope, I did it on purpose. Because the spice...

is nice! [gulp]

ELINOR: [giggles] OLIVE: [giggles]

ARI: This is AMAAAAAZING!

ELINOR: "Ari's Muscles"

ELINOR: Are you ready for tomorrow's big baseball game, Olive?

OLIVE: No. But I will be after today's practice!

ELINOR: [giggles]

[giggles]

ELINOR: Hmm... I thought Ari was going to meet us here.

OLIVE: Me too. Nobody's more excited about this game than him.

ELINOR: I wonder where he is?

[distant baseball bat smack]

ARI: And Ari, the all-star hitter, knocks it out of the park!

But wait! Ari, the all-star fielder, is there to catch it!

Ooof! [baseball smacks against tree]

ELINOR: [gasp]

ARI: Wow! Great catch, Elinor!

ELINOR: [giggles] Thanks. I just got lucky.

You're the real baseball player here, Ari.

ARI: Thanks! Of course, I am a baseball BAT. Get it?

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

ARI: But I really want to play well in tomorrow's big game.

So I've been practicing - a LOT!

ELINOR: As Coach Raccoon always says...

KIDS: If you want to get better, practice, practice, practice! [giggles]

OLIVE: Speaking of practicing, we'd better get going.

[geese honking]

ELINOR: Wow! Look at all these geese!

I wonder what they're doing here? [geese honking]

ARI: Maybe they came to watch us play!

ELINOR: It doesn't look like they're staying.

OLIVE: They aren't. My Nature Book says that when the weather gets cold,

geese fly from the north down south where it's warmer. Look.

It takes them days and days!

ARI: Days and days! They must practice even more than me!

I need to catch up. C'mon! Race ya!

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

ARI: Hi. Hey Tito!

OLIVE: Hi there. ELINOR: Hi!

MR. RACCOON: All right, team, gather '‘round, gather 'round.

Time to get ready for tomorrow's big baseball game. And if you want to play better...

KIDS: Practice, practice, practice!

MR. RACCOON: [chuckles] That's right! Practicing does help you play better.

It also makes your muscles stronger. And that helps you play better, too.

But you don't want to overdo it. There can be such a thing as too much practice.

ARI: How can you practice too much?

ELINOR: I don't know.

MR. RACCOON: The most important thing is to have fun! Ready?

KIDS: Woo-hoo! Yeah!

MR. RACCOON: [chuckles] All right! Who wants to pitch?

ARI: Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! I do!

Let's try a fastball. Oof!

Aw, a ball.

Okay, it's time to try the Super Duper Double Looper special pitch I've been practicing.

[ball smacks bat]

MR. RACCOON: [whistle blows] Great job!

Now, let's practice catching. Who wants to hit the ball?

MR. RACCOON: [whistle blows]

ARI: [heavy breathing]

MR. RACCOON: Safe!

MR. RACCOON: You're the BEST team I've ever coached.

KIDS: [cheer] Yeah! Hungry! Woo-hoo!

ELINOR: Whew! Playing baseball is tiring!

OLIVE: Good thing Coach Raccoon gave us some time to rest. Right, Ari?

ELINOR: [shouting] Ari! Aren't you going to take a break with us?

OLIVE: [shouting] There's snaaacksss...

ARI: Hmmm. Nah, I'm gonna keep practicing for tomorrow's game.

Like Coach says, it'll make my muscles stronger and help me play better!

Are you ready to practice more, ball?

OLIVE: I've never seen Ari turn down a snack before.

ELINOR: [giggles] He sure is practicing a lot.

ARI: Eugh!

Yes! It's Ari, the bat, at bat, and he bats it right out to center field!

Can Ari get to it in time?

Ooof! And Ari makes the catch!

ELINOR/OLIVE: Woo-hoo! Yeah! Ari! [giggles]

ARI: Ha. Whew! [big sigh]

MR. RACCOON: [whistle blows] Now that we're rested up, let's play a practice game!

KIDS: Woo-hoo! Yeah!

OLIVE: Why don't you go to bat first, "“Ari the Baseball Bat."

ARI: [out of breath] Sure! I can show you how it's done...

Eugh- Woah! Oof!

ELINOR: What's the matter? Are you okay?

ARI: [out of breath] I'm fine. No problem. Bat Batter up!

ELINOR: What's wrong with Ari?

OLIVE: He'll be better on the next pitch.

ARI: Okay, keep your eye on the ball. You got it, you got it...

ELINOR: What happened to Ari?

MR. RACCOON: Out!

ELINOR: Are you okay?

ARI: I don't know. My legs feel heavy, and my arms feel like rubber.

I was playing so well before.

[gasp] What if I'm no good at baseball anymore. What if I drop the ball in game tomorrow?

What if I'm a baseball bat who can't even BAT?

ELINOR: I wish we knew how to help Ari.

OLIVE: There must be something we can do.

[geese honking]

ELINOR: More geese flying south.

Wait. It looks like they're landing this time.

ARI: [sigh] Maybe they've decided to stay here after all.

ELINOR: Let's go look. C'mon! We need more observations!

OLIVE: Coach Raccoon, can we go observe the geese?

MR. RACCOON: Mhm.

ELINOR: That's SO interesting! I thought they were flying south.

OLIVE: They can't stay here. It's going to get cold soon.

ELINOR: Then what are they doing here?

ARI: It looks like they're just floating. And eating.

ELINOR: Maybe they just stopped to rest and have a snack.

ELINOR/OLIVE: ...we did!

ELINOR: Maybe that's how the geese can fly for so long. They stop and have a rest sometimes.

ARI: Hmm... I didn't stop to rest. I kept practicing and practicing.

[gasp] Maybe THAT'S why my arms and legs feel like rubber.

MR. RACCOON: Is everything okay, kids?

ELINOR: We figured out why Ari isn't playing well, Mr. Raccoon.

OLIVE: We think he practiced too much, and now his muscles are tired.

MR. RACCOON: Ah! Too much practice and not enough rest.

OLIVE: Why is rest so important, Mr. Raccoon?

MR. RACCOON: Well, when you use your muscles too much without a break, they get tired.

Rest gives your body time to make them strong again.

ELINOR: So, if Ari gets some rest ...

MR. RACCOON: He should feel strong again tomorrow, just in time for the big game.

ARI: I gotta go get some rest! [yawn]

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

OLIVE: I hope he's okay.

ARI: I'm not just okay! I'm all rested up and ready to play!

KIDS: Woo-hoo! Yay! Yeah!

ARI: Keep your eye on the ball, and...

KIDS: Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo! Yeah! [giggles]

MR. RACOON: Safe!

ARI: Woo-hoo!

MR. RACCOON: Congratulations team! That was the best game you've ever played!

ELINOR: And it was all because we practiced!

ARI: And rested.

MR. RACCOON: Yup, because what's the most important thing?

KIDS: To have fun!
