ARUGULA: [forcing a rhyme] It's ma-gic-iAN?

NICO: Arugula! Check out my new magic set! You know I've
NICO: been wanting one for so long, and I finally saved up
NICO: enough in my Bunny Bank to
NICO: I'm going to call myself Nico The Magnifico! I'm going
NICO: to learn how every trick is done! And best of all? YOU
NICO: can be MY assistant!
ARUGULA: Oh. But, I'm already Carl's assistant. And I'm a
ARUGULA: little magic'd out after today's show.
NICO: But you're MY sister. I knew you first! We were born
NICO: only seven minutes apart. I need your help!
ARUGULA: Well, okay. I can help you get started.
ARUGULA: But tomorrow I gotta go
ARUGULA: assistant again.
NICO: If we practice really hard, we can start putting
NICO: on shows together! Soon!
ARUGULA: This is gonna be a lot of magic.

NICO: her sister! You're not just my assistant, you're my

CARL: A magician and a wizard are not the same thing, Nico.

ARUGULA: Wait! This is a competition now?!
ARUGULA: Good luck to you both.

CARL: For my first trick, I, The Carldini, with

CARL: - will make this card float in mid-air!

CARL: We'll make the crayons in this disappear. Presto

SHELDON: How did he DO that?!
NICO: Ahem! And for my last trick...
NICO: If you would be so kind, please step inside the box.
ARUGULA: [exhausted] Okay.
NICO: Now I say the magic words...Nico Change-O!
CROWD: [GASP]
SHELDON: Whoah!
LOTTA: Amazing!
FORREST: Next-level magic!
CARL: [stimming] Hmph.
NICO: Thank you, thank you, everyone. And now...let's
NICO: close the curtain, and bring Arugula The Great back

CROWD: [GASP]
FORREST: Woo-hoo! No way!

CARL: PRESTO Carl-blam-o! Arugula The Great, REAPPEAR!
NICO: Mmm...is that what a REAL magician can do?
CARL: Nico, I think Arugula has vanished! For real!
FORREST: That was RAD! Way to make the magic!
NICO: We have to find Arugula!
CARL: Yes, she's my assistant!
NICO: And my sister! Let's search for her everywhere.

NICO: [Sigh]

NICO: Carl, I feel like this is all my fault. I shouldn't
NICO: have made Arugula feel like she had to be my
NICO: assistant. She...was your assistant first.
CARL: But I can see why you wanted her to be your
CARL: assistant, too! She's the greatest.
NICO: Everyone wants her help, I guess.
CARL: I know! If only we had two
NICO: Right now, I wish we just had one. I wish it so
NICO: much.
CARL/NICO: Arugula!/Ru-Ru!
ARUGULA: Hi.
CARL: Where were you?
NICO: We were so worried!
CARL: How did you make yourself disappear?
ARUGULA: Magicians never reveal their secrets. And
ARUGULA: neither do magicians' assistants. But I don't want to
ARUGULA: be a magician, so I'll tell you! I opened the
ARUGULA: back of the box and walked home.
CARL/NICO: Ohhh!
NICO: Wait, you don't want to do magic anymore?
ARUGULA: No. I've had enough magic-assisting for a while.
ARUGULA: At first, I thought I could be BOTH your assistants.
ARUGULA: But after a while, I felt squished in the middle.
ARUGULA: Like the lettuce in a lettuce sandwich.
NICO: I'm sorry I made you feel that way, sis.
CARL: And I'm sorry I made you feel that way too,
CARL: Arugula.
ARUGULA: It's okay. I should have told you how I felt,
ARUGULA: instead of disappearing. I just didn't
ARUGULA: want to let you down! But from now on, I'll try to
ARUGULA: say how I feel when I'm feeling those feelings.
NICO: And I will try to ask what
CARL: I should have asked you, too, Arugula.
ARUGULA: Thank you. At least you
CARL: I don't know how The Amazing Carldini will perform
CARL: without an assistant...
ARUGULA: I do have an idea! Both of you are such good
ARUGULA: magicians - what if you worked together?

CARL: trying to find Arugula. Maybe it could work?

CARL: Yes.
ARUGULA: I'll be there in the front row, cheering for you

CARL: Then let's do this!

[Door Opens]
MAMA: Carl, don't forget to clean your room today!
CARL: Did you know the first megaphone is thought to have
CARL: been invented over years ago?
MAMA: Uh, Carl, are you even listening to me?
CARL: Of course, I'm listening. You said something
CARL: about megaphones.
MAMA: No, see, I was actually reminding you to clean your
MAMA: room!
CARL: Okay, Mama! But can I get a little more time with my
CARL: megaphone collection?
MAMA: more minutes.
CARL: THANKS MAMA!
[♪]
CARL: Arugula! Want to try my awesome megaphone collection?
ARUGULA: That is an awesome collection, but Nico and I had
ARUGULA: a bad argument, and I'm pretty sad about it.
CARL: You really should try it! Megaphones can help one
CARL: person speak to a whole, huge crowd!
ARUGULA: Thanks, but I don't need to speak to a huge crowd.
ARUGULA: I want to tell you about me and Nico and our
ARUGULA: fight.
CARL: You're not going to want to miss an opportunity to use
CARL: a megaphone like this!
ARUGULA: You're not being a very listener right now,
ARUGULA: Carl!
FORREST: [Squishing foot steps]
CARL: Hey Forrest! Did you know that some megaphones can
CARL: change the sound of your voice?
[Click]
CARL: This one makes my voice sound high.
FORREST: That's funny, Carl, but not use it right
FORREST: now?
CARL: Why are you walking like that, Forrest?
FORREST: Something happened that's embarrassing...and I
FORREST: don't want anyone else to know about it.
[Click]
CARL: What happened?
FORREST: [Squishing foot steps]
FORREST: [inaudible whispers]
CARL: YOU SPILLED POTATO SALAD IN YOUR SOCKS?!
[Bike bell ringing]
[♪]
FORREST: Carl! I told you! I didn't want anyone else to
FORREST: know! Were you even listening?!
CARL: [grumpy] Why does
CARL: everyone think I'm not listening today?!
SHELDON: Mmm. Is that potato salad I smell? Who thinks
SHELDON: you're not listening, Carl?
CARL: My mom. Arugula. Forrest. Everyone!
SHELDON: Why do you think they think that?
CARL: Let me collect my thoughts...
[♪ Collecting Thoughts Jam ]
CARL: My mom and my friends were trying to tell me
CARL: stuff...
[♪]
CARL: But I was busy playing with my megaphone collection!
CARL: And when I'm playing with an awesome collection,
CARL: it's hard for me to focus on anything else
[♪]
CARL: Maybe I do have trouble listening!
SHELDON: That happens to me too! Luckily, my mom is my
SHELDON: listening coach. I call her Coach Mom! And she
SHELDON: taught me some great tricks to help me listen when
SHELDON: I'm distracted.
CARL: Oh! Maybe you can teach them to me, and be my listening
CARL: coach. Coach Sheldon!
SHELDON: Oh! I like the way that sounds. Is it okay if I
SHELDON: get some of my family to help?
CARL: I don't mind!
SHELDON: Good! Then let's get listening!
[whistle shriek]
SHELDON: Coach Mom taught me that a good listener hears
SHELDON: what people are saying, and shows them they
SHELDON: understand.
CARL: Coach Sheldon, what am I supposed to do to make sure
CARL: that I'm listening and understanding?
SHELDON: You say something like, "“so what you're saying
SHELDON: is..."” and then, repeat back what you heard to
SHELDON: make sure it's correct!
CARL: Got it!
SHELDON: Our next lesson is body listening, where you
SHELDON: listen with more than your ears.
CARL: But my ears are the only parts of me that can actually
CARL: hear anything!
SHELDON: True. But there are other things you can do with
SHELDON: your body to let someone know you are
SHELDON: listening.
SHELDON: Let's try it out. Now here to share a story is my
SHELDON: cousin Brittany Beaver!
[whistle shriek]
BRITTANY: You are so going to want to listen to this story!
BRITTANY: Six months ago, I was going to do a stellar
BRITTANY: performance with my awesomely, amazing school
BRITTANY: orchestra...
BRITTANY: Carl, are you paying attention?
CARL: You can't tell?
CARL: What do I do with my body to show I'm paying
CARL: attention, Coach Sheldon?
SHELDON: You can look at Brittany to let her know
SHELDON: you're listening and paying attention.
[♪]
CARL: [gasp]
[♪]
CARL: Sometimes it's hard for me look in someone's eyes.
SHELDON: Oh, that's good to know. Okay! No eye contact.
SHELDON: But you could turn more towards her, and lean in.
CARL: Right!
BRITTANY: Okay! We were about to start the amazing concert,
BRITTANY: but when I opened up my French horn
BRITTANY: case...my French horn was missing!
BRITTANY: Carl? Did you even hear what I said?
CARL: What do I do, Coach Sheldon? How do I show
CARL: Brittany I'm listening with my body?
SHELDON: According to Coach Mom, it helps to imagine how
SHELDON: the other person is feeling, and then let that
SHELDON: emotion show. Also, shake your head yes or no when
SHELDON: you're listening.
CARL: Ooh! Maybe I can imagine myself in Brittany's place.
[♪]
CARL: To see how she felt when she opened her French horn
CARL: case...
[♪]
CARL: Opening my case and not having my instrument right
CARL: before a concert would make me upset!
BRITTANY: You shaking your head no, and your super
BRITTANY: concerned look shows me you're listening! Okay, I
BRITTANY: started looking around the school. And soon, I
BRITTANY: found my French horn! It turns out the school
BRITTANY: gerbil had just borrowed it to take a nap in.
CARL: Hold on a second, Brittany. I just want to
CARL: imagine how that felt!
CARL: A gerbil in a French horn is hilarious!
CARL: [giggling]
BRITTANY: You ARE listening!
SHELDON: Great job listening with your body, Carl!
[High Five]
SHELDON: And now I have one last lesson to show you!
[whistle shriek]

CARL: Why are you putting all these amazing things around,
CARL: Coach?
SHELDON: We're pretending that someone has an important story
SHELDON: to share, Carl! Your mission is: to listen to the
SHELDON: story and not be distracted as you walk by all
SHELDON: these amazing things.
CARL: How am I possibly gonna do
SHELDON: When you feel like you're getting distracted,
SHELDON: you're going to do something to help you
SHELDON: concentrate. It's called Distraction Action!
CARL: Got it!
SHELDON: Now, here to tell you a story, is the greatest
SHELDON: listening coach in the world! Coach Mom!
COACH MOM: Yee-haw!
SHELDON/COACH MOM: Let's play Distraction Action!
COACH MOM: Last summer, I took a to the Wavy Wave
COACH MOM: Point to do some surf
CARL: Ooh! Look at that yo-yo! It's so shiny! I want to play
CARL: with it. What do I do, Coach Sheldon?
SHELDON: Try turning your head from the yo-yo, and facing
SHELDON: Coach Mom.
CARL [Stimming]: [uncomfortable
COACH MOM: I was in the water, and a HUGE wave was coming
COACH MOM: right towards me!
CARL: Ooh! Is that the FZ- Shout Module?
SHELDON: Do an action, Carl! So you can focus!
CARL: [inner voice] Focus. Focus
CARL: [inner voice] That's a rea nice megaphone.
CARL: [inner voice] So shiny.
SHELDON: You're getting distracted, Carl! Take action!
CARL: [inner voice] C'mon, Carl, think. Think.
CARL: Nothing is working, Coach Sheldon! What do I do?
CARL: What do I do?
SHELDON: This is a tough one! What does he do, Coach Mom?
COACH MOM: Well, it's always helpful to use your words,
COACH MOM: Carl.
SHELDON: Oh right! If you feel like you can't listen right
SHELDON: now, explain what you're feeling and what you
SHELDON: need to do to be able to pay attention again.
CARL: Okay! I'll try! Coach Mom, that FZ- megaphon
CARL: distracting me. Can you pause your story for a minute
CARL: so I can investigate and restart when I'm ready to
CARL: listen?
COACH MOM: Of course, I can.
CARL: [excited gasp]
[♪]
CARL: Testing , , !
♪♪
CARL: There! Now I'm ready to pay attention again!
COACH MOM: The huge wave was coming, but...
[♪]
COACH MOM: I hopped on my surfboard and rode it all the
COACH MOM: way to shore!
[♪]
CARL: All the way to shore! Amazing story!
SHELDON: You did it, Carl! You were able to listen without
SHELDON: being distracted!
CARL: Now I'm ready to show my friends what a good
CARL: listener I am! Thanks, Coaches!
[♪]
CARL: Arugula, I've been working on my listening skills
CARL: and I'm ready to listen to your story now. Why are you
CARL: so sad?
ARUGULA: Because Nico thinks I borrowed her favorite gold
ARUGULA: crayon and broke it. But I didn't!
CARL: Let me see if I understand.
[♪]
CARL: Nico thinks you broke her favorite crayon.
[♪]
CARL: But you didn't even borrow
ARUGULA: Yes, and she yelled at me and that made me feel
ARUGULA: really bad.
CARL: I wouldn't like it either if someone said I did
CARL: something I didn't do, then yelled at me for it.
ARUGULA: Thanks for really listening, Carl. I feel a
ARUGULA: little better now.
FORREST: [squishing when walking
CARL: Forrest, I'm ready to listen now.
CARL: Forrest, I'm ready to listen now.
FORREST: Okay, but I'm still so embarrassed! You see, I was
FORREST: having lunch this afternoon...
CARL: I'm listening.
FORREST: So my mom had made my favorite potato salad and I
FORREST: was about to have a big when...the potato
FORREST: salad scoop slipped off
CARL: [inner voice] Oh boy! Look at those shiny, shiny
CARL: [inner voice] wrenches! Need a new Distraction Action!
CARL: [inner voice] What do I do? What do I do?
CARL: I'm sorry, Forrest, I'm distracted by these shiny
CARL: wrenches. Can you pause your story for a moment until
CARL: I can listen again?
FORREST: Oh! Okay, sure!
CARL: [deep breath in and out]
CARL: There. Now I can listen again.
FORREST: And, the potato salad scoop slipped off my
FORREST: spoon and it landed right in my socks!
CARL: I would NOT like having squishy salad in my socks,
CARL: Forrest. But I have something that might help!

FORREST: A little big, but potat
FORREST: feel embarrassed anymore! In fact, I think I'm
