Yadina: Hi there! Welcome to the show.

Today we're meeting someone truly great:

Jackie Robinson!

Brad: Jackie was one of the first Black athletes

to play baseball in the major leagues.

Xavier: It was a BIG deal.

Before then, mainly white players were allowed to play.

Yadina: It was so unfair.

But thanks to Jackie Robinson,

things are a lot different today.

Now let's play ball!

♪ [baseball organ music] ♪

[crack!] Brad: Whoa! Woaaah!

[zap]

[distant giggle]

Xavier: Lunch time!

I've been waiting for this all day!

My abuela made her

tasty TOSTONES!

Harper: Mmm! Nice!

My dad made his famous spicy Jamaican patties!

Xavier: Ooo, cool!

Brian: [off screen] What the heck is that?

Xavier: It's our lunches!

Brian: I've never seen food like that before,

I don't know what that is!

Xavier: Um...my abuela made them,

they're tostones. Brian: Pee-ew,

it smells even weirder than it looks.

Why don't you just eat normal food like sandwiches?

[chewing] Mmm! Mh-mhhh!

So normal!

You guys always bring weird food.

Harper: Hmm!

Brian: This table should be for normal food only.

No one will want to sit with you if you're eating...

[chomp! ]

Weird food!!

Harper: [sad sigh]

Uh...um, I'm not really hungry anymore.

Xavier: Harper, wait-!

Brian: Heh!

Xavier: [sad sigh]

[sad groan]

[approaching laughter]

Yadina: Xavier! Brad: Hiiii!

[laughter]

Brad: Mmm!

Hello, my beautiful Matzah ball soup!

Yadina: Mmm, I can't wait to eat my empanadas!

Huh?

Did you gobble up your tostones already?

Xavier: Not exactly.

I haven't even touched them.

Brad: [slurps]

Do you have a tummy ache?

Xavier: No, uh...it's just...

Harper and I were about to eat,

but Brian said our food was...

weird.

And this table was just for normal food.

Yadina: What?

That's not right!

Brad: Yeah, I'm pretty sure there's no such thing

as 'normal food'.

Yadina: [determined] Let's go talk to this Brian!

Xavier: Forget it, Yadina.

I really don't wanna go back there.

[sobs] I don't know what to do.

[quiet sobbing]

Yadina: We need to do something.

Xavier really needs our help.

Brad: Yup!

[sighs]

There's only one thing to do!

Yadina: [excited] Yes! Of course!

Brad: Eat ya' later, lunch.

Yadina/Brad: [excited] To the Secret Museum!

Xavier: Woah!

Xavier: Are you ready?

Brad: Here we go!

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Yadina: And where we'll go?

Brad: And what- [gasps]

[footsteps]

Phew!

Hey, wait up!

Yadina: Look out below! Xavier: Woo-hoo!

Xavier/Yadina: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blee blarp]

Brad: Hi, Berby! Berby: [blar bloop]

Brad: Uff! Berby: [blurp]

Xavier: [humming] Berby: [bloop!]

Xavier: We're getting something!

Yadina: A baseball?

Berby, this is no time for games,

We have a real problem to solve!

[computer whirring]

Xavier: Look! That's who we're going to meet:

Jackie Robinson.

Yadina: In California.

Brad: In .

Almost years ago!

[groans]

I wonder if Jackie Robinson

can help make things better

at the lunch tables?

Yadina: Only one way to find out!

Ready for adventure?

Xavier: [sad sigh]

[sadly] I don't know.

Brad: If it'll help Xavier....

Xavier: Whoa!

Are you sure Brad?

Brad: This time, I am ready!

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Yadina: Here we go!

[zap]

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on, Dr Zoom!

Brad: Aaah! Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Whoaaa!

Berby: [blee blee blar bloop]

[zap]

Xavier: Well, here we are!

California in the year .

Yadina: Warm breeze, shining sun...

Brad: Ugh! Sturdy trees...

[crack of bat on ball]

Xavier: [gasps] And flying baseballs!

Yadina: [gasps]

Jackie Robinson: [grunts]

Brad: Ahh! OOOF!

Jackie Robinson: Sorry about that.

Brad: Ouch-y!

Yadina: That kid is good!

Berby: [blee blee bloop]

[scanning] Jackie: [grunts]

Xavier: He's Jackie Robinson!

Jackie: Do you three want to play with us?

Yadina: Uh huh! Xavier: Oh, yes!

Yadina: Sure! But you should know,

I'm on the t-ball team back home.

[throwing grunt]

Xavier: Brad! Over here!

Brad: [throwing grunt]

Xavier: Wha-woah -- ugh!

[ball bounces]

Never mind!

Jackie: [chuckles] I'll get it!

Sarah: [unfriendly] Hey!

My Dad says you're not allowed on OUR lawn!

Jackie: But, Sarah, I was just-

♪ [ominous music] ♪

[angry grunt] Hmm!!

Jackie: [frustrated sigh]

Yadina: Wait!

How come the other kids can go

after the ball, but not Jackie?

Jackie: It's because Sarah's family doesn't want Black people

on their property. It's not right!

But some people don't like me

just because my skin is a different colour than theirs.

Yadina: But, isn't that discrimination?

Jackie: Yup. Racial discrimination.

It's unfair and it feels awful!

Xavier: Jackie, that's terrible.

Brad: You don't deserve to be treated like that.

No one does.

Yadina: Is there anything we can do?

Jackie: [thinking] Hmmm-

When something isn't right,

it takes courage to change it.

I'm not sure exactly what to do, but...

[gasps] I do know who can help!

Mallie Robinson: [gently] I'm glad you came to me, Jackie.

What happened to you wasn't right.

Jackie: I know. But, what should I do, Mom?

Play somewhere else?

Mallie: We live here,

and you have every right to play on this street.

I know it isn't easy to stand up to people

like Sarah and her dad, in fact, it can be downright scary.

But when something isn't right, it takes courage to change it.

Jackie: That's what I said!

Mallie: That's my boy!

If you can find the courage to keep on playing Jackie,

then one day, just maybe,

folks like Sarah's dad

will see how wrong they are.

Friend: Hey Jackie, come play with us!

Friend : C'mon! Let's play!

Friends: Let's go!

This will be fun!

Jackie: Okay! Let's play ball!

Alright!

[throwing grunt]

[giggles]

[throwing grunt]

Mallie: [exhales]

[kids playing]

[throwing grunt/giggle]

Brad: I don't get how anyone

could treat another person differently,

just because of something like their skin colour.

Xavier: Yeah. When Brian treated Harper and I

differently at lunch, it felt awful.

I really hope things get better for Jackie.

Berby: [blurp]

Yadina: Looks like we're about to find out!

Trio: Uaaah! Upf!

Xavier: Uuh!

[to Berby] Where are we?

Brad: [groans] When are we?

Yadina: And what's with the fence?

Brad: Aaaaaah! [Bam!] Upf!

Yadina: Ooh! Xavier: [gasps]

Yadina: [excited gasp] Jackie!

Jackie: Hi there! Need a hand?

Brad: That'd be nice!

Jackie: [grunts] Ugh!

Xavier: Woah, we're at a baseball field!

Brad: Woah!

Yadina: Cool!

Xavier: So, you still play baseball with your friends?

Jackie: [giggles] Not exactly.

I'm a professional baseball player now.

I'm here practicing with my team.

They're all so...

good!

Jackie: Oh yeah! They're INCREDIBLE!

And they've taught me a lot.

[loud crack]

orry, be right baaaaack!

[breathing hard]

[catching grunt]

Trio: WHOA!!

Yadina: [off screen] Wow!

That was AWESOME, Jackie!

You flew even faster than Dr. Zoom!

Jackie: [chuckles] Thanks.

Playing ball with these guys for a living,

is like a dream come true.

Brad: Speaking of dreams come true,

I've always wondered:

do you guys get free hot dogs at the games?

Jackie: Hm!

I wish!

We have to pack our own supper here.

And with what little money we make,

we can't afford much.

Xavier: I always thought major league players

got all kinds of stuff.

Jackie: Oh they do.

[sadly] But, not us.

Brad: What- what do you mean?

Jackie: Here, there's a major league for White players,

who get paid well and are able to eat and sleep

wherever they want.

A lot of restaurants and hotels

won't let Black people inside.

And a n*gro League for Black players,

who get paid less

and have to find their own food

and places to sleep.

Sometimes, we have to sleep on our bus!

Yadina: So, baseball in is...

Um, what's the word?

Jackie: Segregated.

People are separated based on the colour of their skin.

And they're not treated equally.

Brad: But, that's racial discrimination!

Again!

Jackie: And it still feels terrible.

[sighs]

If we all got a shot at playing in the majors,

maybe that'd be a good step towards changing

how we're treated outside of baseball, too.

Well, looks like it's time to turn in.

Brad: Bye, Jackie.

Yadina: So, Jackie's being kept out of

major league baseball,

just like he was kept off that family's lawn.

Brad: [sigh] It's like nothing's changed.

Xavier: Yeah. I can't imagine

how Jackie and his teammates must feel.

They should all have a chance to play in the Major Leagues!

But... how?

Berby: [blee blee blar bloop]

♪ [zap] ♪

Brad: Woaaaah!

Ehm... where are we now?

Did Berby bring us to a baseball museum?

Berby: [bloop blarp]

Jackie: [off screen] Pleased to meet you, Mr. Rickey.

I'm Jackie, Jackie Robinson.

Branch Rickey: Oh, I know exactly who you are, Jackie.

That's precisely why I wanted to meet with you.

You see, Jackie, I know how good you are--

more than good enough to play for my team

in the major leagues.

And, I want to give you a shot to do it.

Jackie: Really? I'd love to play in the majors!

Branch Rickey: [chuckles] Well, that's good! Because,

I'd love to see you there!

Xavier: Jackie's finally getting his chance!

Branch Rickey: [sighs] But, I want to be

honest with you, Jackie.

[sighs]

This won't be easy for you.

Jackie: [sighs]

Yeah. I know.

Branch Rickey: [off screen] A lot of White baseball fans

won't like seeing a Black player on the field.

Some stadiums might not even let you inside the building to play.

Even a few of your own teammates won't want you there.

Jackie: [grunts]

Branch Rickey: Mr. Robinson,

you'll be the first Black man

in almost years

to step foot on a major league baseball field.

You've certainly got the talent to be there.

But, that's not all you're going to need.

So...

what do you want to do?

Jackie: [sighs]

[thinking] Hm...

I know it'll be hard.

And scary.

But I also know,

that keeping Black players out of the major leagues

isn't right.

And when something isn't right,

it takes courage to change it.

What do I want to do?

I wanna play ball!

Branch Rickey: Then welcome to the major leagues!

♪ [triumphant music] ♪

Brad: [off screen] Wow, Jackie is so brave!

Brave enough to be one of the first

Black players in the majors!

Yadina: Yeah. But,

did you hear what he'll have to deal with?

Xavier: Uhm-

I wonder, if he'll be able to do it?

Berby: [blee blee blar bloop]

[zap] Brad: Woaaaah!

♪ [game organ music] Xavier: Whoa.

We're at a major league baseball game!

♪♪ [crowd cheering]

Yadina: So, does that mean...?

Announcer: [over loud speaker] Now batting...

Jackie Robinson!

[crowd booing]

Xavier: [excited] Yes! Jackie is here!

Finally playing in the major leagues!

Xavier/Brad/Yadina: [cheering] Go, Jackie!

[crowd booing] Yadina: Uh?!

[crowd booing]

Yadina: Some of them are booing!

Just like Jackie knew they would.

Oh, I hope he's okay!

[excited cheering]

Fan : Yes, Jackie! Fan : Woohoo!

[hitting grunt]

[crowd cheering] Brad: [off screen] Woohoo!

Yeah! Go, go! Run, Jackie, run! Yeah!

Xavier: [off screen] Aw, he's out!

Jackie: [disappointed sigh]

Yadina: [off screen] Jackie! Hi, Jackie, over here, Jackie!

Brad: Are you ok?

Yadina: Sorry some of the "fans" are being so awful.

Jackie: [sighs] Yeah.

I worked hard to make the team,

but, some people still don't think

I should play here.

Just because I'm Black.

It makes me so mad!

And even afraid sometimes.

Xavier: Oh.

[curious] So, why don't you quit the team?

Jackie: [determined] No way.

I'm not gonna let anyone stop me from playing baseball.

When something isn't right,

it takes courage to change it.

If I can find the courage to stay and play,

maybe it'll help change

how Black players are being treated.

Xavier: I sure hope so.

Jackie: Thanks, guys!

P.A. Announcer: Now at the top of the third inning,

[crowd booing] Trio: [cheering]

Yadina: Aww!

[crowd booing/angry shouting]

Jackie: [sighs] You can do this, Jackie!

Trio: [amazed gasp]

Yadina: It's a...

HOME RUN!

♪♪ [loud cheering]

Xavier: Jackie! That was...

AH-MAZING!

Jackie: Thanks. I know I deserve to be here.

There are more Black people

who should get their chance to play here, too.

And one day, they will!

Xavier: Whoa!

Being here took a lot of courage for Jackie.

But, he did it!

Not just for himself,

but so people of all races

could have the chance to play.

If Jackie Robinson can do that,

then maybe I can find the courage

to go back to the lunch table!

Brad: Xavier, we know you can.

Xavier: Berby, let's go home!

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Xavier: [deep breath] Let's go!

Yadina: We've got your back, Xavier!

Brad: We've also got lunch supervisors, teachers,

and the principal if we need them.

Xavier: Thanks, Brad. Thanks, Yadina.

Okay, remember to have courage,

just like Jackie.

[deep inhale]

[slow exhale]

Oh, tostones!

Yadina: Empanadas!

Brad: Mmm, hello again matzah ball soup!

Xavier: Mmm, so good!

Brian: Heh, what's with all the weird food today?

Go eat your weird lunches somewhere else.

[off screen] I don't want to smell your weird food

while I am eating!

Xavier: Our food isn't weird, it's great!

Harper: What's weird is thinking there's such a thing

as weird food.

Brian: Uh, well... I-

Xavier: [excited] Harper!

Harper: Hey, Xavier.

Mm, your tostones look good.

Brian: [mean chuckle] They look like...

Harper: What've you got, Yadina? Yadina: Delicious empanadas!

Our abuela from Puerto Rico makes them.

Mh-mh-mhh!

Harper: Mmm!

And is that meatball soup, Brad?

Brad: They're actually matzah ba*ls.

A traditional Jewish dish.

My family's been making this forever.

Harper: Same! My dad learned to make

spicy beef patties back home in Jamaica.

Brian: So--uh, how spicy are they?

Brad: Uh-

Brian: I--I like spicy stuff.

I mean...

...I guess your food isn't all that weird.

Sorry I said that.

Xavier: What you said really hurt.

Harper: But, it's good to admit when you're wrong.

So...

Xavier: Brian, we accept your apology.

Brian: [surprised] Uh...thank you!

[relieved sigh]

Harper: You know, I could ask my dad to make you

a Jamaican patty for tomorrow.

Extra spicy!

Brian: Really? Thanks!

Yadina: And I can make you one of my

cheese and grape jelly sandwiches.

Brad: Pffft!

All: [laughing]

Xavier: Ha, Yadina!

All: [laughing]

Yadina: Jackie Robinson was so brave.

Even though people didn't treat him fairly,

he kept on playing.

Thanks to him, players of all races

now have the opportunity to play in the majors.

Xavier: Because that's what's right.

Berby: [blee blar bloop]

Brad: [whispers]

Safe!

Xavier/Brad/Yadina: Forty-two!

Xavier: -as a special way of thanking him

for making major league baseball a fairer place

that includes more people.

Yadina: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure

Brad: Who used to be a kid, just like you and me.
