Hi there. Welcome to the show!

Brad: Today we're meeting one of the greatest athletes

of all time!

Jim Thorpe.

Xavier: He belonged to the Sac and Fox First Nation.

Yadina: Jim learned to play lots of different sports as a kid.

Like football!

Xavier: And baseball. Yadina: And basketball-

Xavier: Lacrosse-

Yadina: Running, swimming...

Xavier: And even horseback riding!

Let's start the show! Brad: [giggles]

Player: Ugh!

Brad: Maybe that's the--

What?!

Players: [throwing grunts]

Girl Player: [giggles] Yes!

Boy Player: [grunting] Got it!

Brad: Huh?!

Red Team Player: Hey! Wanna play?

Brad: I'd love to play cape football!

I mean flag football.

But... I don't know how.

Is there an instruction manual I could read? Or something..?

Red Team Player: Um, no.

But you could just follow along with what we're doing.

Brad: No manual?!

Xavier: If you wanna play, why not give it a shot?

Brad: I can't learn something new without instructions,

I'll embarrass myself.

Brad: Whoa!

that's going to turn me into a flag football expert!

Xavier: That's who we're going to meet! Jim Thorpe!

Yadina: And that's where we're going to meet him:

Brad: And we're going to the year .

That's... over years ago!

Did they even play flag football back then?

Xavier: There's only one way to find out...

Yadina: So ready!

Yadina: [off screen] Here we go!

Xavier: It's happening! Yadina: Hang on Dr. Zoom!

Xavier: Woohoo!

Brad: Whoah!

Yadina: Hey, look!

Xavier: Is that..?

Berby: [whirring]

Xavier: Yes! Jim Thorpe. Thanks, Berby!

Yadina: Looks like Jim is learning how to fish!

Jim Thorpe: [struggling/grunting]

Hiram: [laughs]

Jim Thorpe: Okay!

Yadina: [gasps] He did it!

Xavier: Did you catch a fish?

Jim: Yes! But..

this fish is still just small,

so my dad and I are returning it to the river.

Thank you little fish,

for letting us catch you,

and helping me learn.

Yadina: Did you thank the fish?

Jim: Yes, our Sac and Fox way is to show respect

and give thanks to the animals we share this land with.

Yadina: Oh.

Dr. Zoom and I appreciate that.

Hiram: I'll take this home.

Why don't you stay and play for a bit?

Jim: Okay! Thanks, Dad.

[to kids] I'm Jim.

Yadina: Hi! Yadina, Dr. Zoom,

Xavier, and that's Brad.

Brad: Hi. Um...Jim,

how did you learn to catch that fish?

Your dad didn't tell you what to do.

Did he give you an instruction manual to read?

Jim: [giggles] No.

Here, kids learn by observing the adults

and teachers around us.

We're taught to pay close attention

to how something is done,

so we can try it ourselves!

Brad: So, just watching your dad fish

helped you learn how to fish..?

Jim: Exactly! Observing others

is a great way to learn a new activity!

I can show you,

with my favourite game...

'Follow the Leader!'

Tree roots ahead!

Just observe what I do, and you'll be surprised

how quickly you can learn this...

Ugh!

[effort] Uh, uh, uh!

It's your turn!

Yadina: Let's go!

Yadina/Xavier: [hopping/grunting]

C'mon, Brad. Follow the leader!

Brad: Okay...uuh,

do it like Jim did.

[gasps] Ready!

Woohoo! Yadina: Alright!

Go Brad! Xavier: Yay!

Jim: Amazing! C'mon!

Follow the leader over this boulder!

[jumping/grunt]

Xavier: Here I come!

Yadina: Yay Xavier!

Jim: What did you observe me do?

Brad: Hmm...

Brad: [to himself] Okay Brad, just --, that's it!

Jim: Awesome, you're all getting the hang of it!

Now for the big finale...

This is a little tricky,

so make sure you pay very close attention.

Xavier: Hm, it looks like Jim is using those little knobs

on the tree like steps.

Yadina: And the holes in the tree like handles!

Jim: Tah-dah!

Xavier: Coool! I want to try!

Come on, guys!

Yadina: Let's go!

Brad: I don't know...

hopping through roots and jumping over rocks

is one thing.

Yadina: I got it! Xavier: Yeah, Yadina!

Jim: Yes! [to Brad] Now your turn.

You're doing great.

Just trust that you know what to do.

What did you observe?

Brad: Hmm--

Jim: Use the knobs in the tree like steps.

Brad: [deep breath]

[to himself] Push off the trunk..

[climbing/grunting]

And pull up to the branch.

[climbing/grunting]

Xavier: Hooray! Yadina: Woohoo!

Jim: Go Brad! Brad: Yaaay!

Jim: See? Observing others

is a great way to learn a new activity.

Brad: You're right.

I know how I can learn to play flag football now!

Jim: That's great! Good luck, Brad!

Brad: Thanks, Jim. Bye!

Brad: Berby, let's go home.

Boy: I'm glad you decided to play.

Do you know what these are for?

Brad: Hm...

Oh, I can't let anyone pull my flags off,

or else I'm out. Right?

Boy: Right! Guess you do know how to play.

Brad: [giggles]

I have been observing you play for a while now,

so yeah, I guess I do.

Ugh! [exhales] Ready!

Boy: Ah!

[throwing/grunt]

Brad: Uh! Oh! [boing] Close one!

Oh no, what do I do now!?

Boy: [off screen, yells] Run Brad!

Brad: Oh yeah... run!

Brad: [heavy breathing/grunting]

Xavier: Woohoo! Yadina: Nice, Brad! Alright!

Brad: WHAT?!

Blue Team Player: I thought I caught Brad's flag..?

Brad: [big grin] Sorry, but that's my cape.

And this isn't cape football.

Everyone: [giggle]

Xavier: Jim became a professional baseball player

AND football player.

He also went to the Olympics

and proved himself to be one of

the greatest athletes in the WHOLE WORLD.

Yadina: But most importantly,

Jim was an inspiration to Indigenous kids everywhere,

to do what you love and achieve your dreams!

Xavier: Thanks for joining our awesome adventure

Brad: Who used to be a kid,

just like you and me.

Yadina: So kids like you can change the world!

Today we're meeting an ah-mazing

painter AND storyteller:

Norval Morrisseau.

Yadina: Norval's paintings were known for their

bright, bold colours--

Xavier: --and for sharing stories and teachings

that were important to his Indigenous culture.

I can't wait to meet him.

Brad: Me too!

Xavier: [chuckles] Guess it's time to start the show!

Troop Leader Kerry: Okay, Nature Troopers!

To help us with our discussion about wildlife,

I've brought a special friend...

Meet Duckie the duckling.

[duck chirps]

Troopers: [giggle]

Yadina: Awwww! Brad: Oooh!

Xavier: [chuckles]

Troop Leader Kerry: Duckie was rescued from a nearby lake

because he had a piece of plastic stuck around his wing,

which prevented it from growing.

Yadina: [gasps]

[devastated] Oh no!

[duckling chirping] Poor Duckie!

I can't let this happen!

If people recycle plastic

instead of littering it on the ground,

would that help animals like Duckie?

Troop Leader Kerry: That would certainly be a great step

towards helping all animals.

Yadina: EVERYONE needs to know that plastic can hurt animals!

Xavier/Brad: Totally.

Yadina: Good. Dr. Zoom and I are glad you're with us.

Brad: For sure!

...Wait. With you for what?

Yadina: Excuse me! Did you know plastic can hurt animals?

Xavier: Hi!Yadina: Everyone!

Xavier: Uhm, can I talk to you?Yadina: Please recycle your plastic!

[losing energy] Plastic on the ground..

Yadina: [weary] Did you know ducks can hurt plastic?

Xavier: Yadina, I don't think we can talk to

every single person at the Museum.

Yadina: You're right.

But how else can we get everyone's attention?

Animals like Duckie NEED our help.

Yadina/Xavier: [excited gasp]

To the Secret Museum!

Brad: [peacefully snoring]

Brad: [tiny voice] Here we go!

Xavier: I wonder who the Secret Museum will send us to meet?

Xavier: So this is Binqwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek,

a First Nation in Ontario, Canada.

Brad: [gasps] Look!

Xavier: Whoa.

It looks like a snake!

Yadina: I wonder who drew it?

[giggles]

Come on, guys! Oh! Ugh!

Xavier: Ah! Yadina: [giggles]

Brad: [grunts] Heeey, wait for me!

Norval Morrisseau: Hmm, yeah.. uuh, yeah! That looks good!

Eeegh!

Berby: [whirring]

Xavier: That's him! Norval Morrisseau.

Morrisseau: Boozhoo!!

Yadina: Hmmm--

I think we need the translator.

We don't know that language.

Norval: I said hello in Anishinaabemowin.

But my grandma also taught me English!

Brad: Wow, you can speak two languages?

Norval: [nods]

Grandma and Grandpa teach me a lot.

Like about the Eagle.

In my culture, the Eagle is very important.

It represents love between people,

animals, and the Earth.

All living things.

Yadina: I love animals!

But I never thought about there being love

between ALL living things.

Brad: Love between all things sounds so nice.

Norval: M-hm! That's why I do these drawings!

Anishinaabe stories have important messages in them,

and art can help me share

important messages with others.

[waves splash]

Xavier: [gasps] Oh no, your drawing!

Norval: [giggles] That's okay.

Now I can draw more stories.

Xavier: See-ya!

Yadina: [confused] But, I'm not sure how they can help me

tell more people about recycling.

Should I write "please don't litter"

in the museum sandbox? Berby: [blarp]

Xavier: I think Berby has something else in mind...

Brad: Uaaaa-aaa-ah!

Yadina: Whoa! Where are we?

Brad: [dreamy] Whereever we are--

--it's magical!

Berby: [blar bloop]

Xavier: Berby says it's years later.

And we're in--

Norval: [off screen] My home!

Welcome!

Xavier: Whoa!

Yadina: Norval, did you paint all of these?

Norval: [proudly] Oh, yes. I love colour.

Brad: I love colour too!

But you must of been painting for... years

to make all of these!

Norval: No. There was a time

when I wasn't free to paint.

When I was taken to a Residential School.

Brad: What's a Residential School?

Norval: A place many Indigenous kids like me were forced to go.

Let me show you.

Yadina: [gasps] It's the artifact,

from the Secret Museum!

Norval: My people, the Anishinaabe,

used birchbark to record stories and teachings,

so they could be passed down.

[off screen] For many years,

Indigenous kids were made to leave our homes and families.

We were sent to Residential Schools

where we were not allowed to practice our culture.

That means I was not allowed to speak

my Anishinaabe language,

or hear my grandpa's stories,

or even draw them.

It made me feel very sad,

angry, and afraid.

[sad sigh]

Yadina: It's not fair that happened to you, Norval.

Or to other Indigenous kids.

Norval: Those schools hurt a lot of indigenous people.

So, when I finally got home,

I wanted to remember and celebrate

my Anishinaabe stories and teachings.

And art can help share important messages with others.

Like the message that we are all connected.

Xavier: People.. Yadina: Animals..

Brad: And the Earth. All living things.

Norval: Yes! I hope my art

will inspire people to love

and care for each other,

the Earth, and the animals we share it with.

Yadina: Well you've definitely inspired Dr. Zoom 'n me.

[gasps] Heeey,

I think I know how I can share

my message about recycling

with more people now!
