Lily: The Windy Day.

Hello, everybody.

It's me, meteorologist Al Hunter.

And I'm here to tell you what tomorrow's weather will be.

Tomorrow, we'll see sunshine with strong winds.

Al: Enough wind to blow your hat off,

but not enough to make it hard to catch.

I'm going to be happy to see the sunshine.

Because for my family and me, tomorrow is moving day.

Yes, this is my last day on this program.

From now on, I'll be broadcasting on a new

program in a different city.

But I'm really excited because it's the very city

where I grew up.

Al: So, are you kids excited about our big move?

Corky: Yes, Dad. Lily: You bet.

Benny: Me too.

Al: I don't know if you remember

-but in my weather forecast yest Dot: Okay. got it.

I said today's

going to be a windy day. Dot: Sounds good.

Let's play a game to see if I was right.

Can you kids spot any signs of the wind?

Oh, look!

Lily: The wind is blowing those and making them spin around.

Corky: It looks like they're dancing

Maybe it's 'cause they're happy we're moving here.

Dot: Yes. Benny: The wind blew

that man's hat off, and he caught it just like you said.

Al: Oh, man.

How brilliant am I?

I mean, come on. What?

Al: Nothing? No applause? Dot: Okay, got it. Sounds good.

Anybody? Dot?

I'm on the phone with the movers, hon.

I promise I'll clap as soon as I get off.

Lily: Hey, Dad.

How can you tell how fast the wind is moving?

Al: Good question, Lily.

We're almost at our new house,

and I think you'll spy with your curious eye

something there that might give you the answer.

Really? Ooh. What is it?

Al: You'll just have to wait and see.

Dot: Bye-bye.

Everything good with the movers?

Right on target.

If I've timed this right, we'll arrive just before they do.

Al: Dot Hunter,

there's only one word to describe the job

you're doing organizing this move.

Incredibly awesome.

Dot: That's two words, Al.

Not if you say it fast like this.

Incredibly awesome.

And you're an incredibly awesome producer.

And you're an incredibly awesome mother.

Why, thank you!

Ooh, Mom, do that again.

But this time for the camera.

So, tell the camera how our move is going so far, Dad?

I'm happy my new TV job has brought me back to my hometown.

And I think my incredibly brilliant kids

are going to like being here, too

Look, I made a picture of our new home.

[car engine]

Well, here it is.

The family house your Great Grandpa Wallace Hunter bought

when he got out of the army.

I have so many fond memories of this place

from when I was your age.

When you were a kid?

That was like a million, billion years ago.

[giggles] Al: Thank you, Benny.

Anyway, as I was saying,

after my dear Grandpa Wallace passed away, my mom and dad,

your grandma and grandpa, lived here for a long time.

Now, they've moved to a smaller place,

and they're traveling the world.

So, we're going to live here.

The movers should be here soon.

Let's start unpacking the car.

I expect those movers will get here at noon.

Right on the "Dot."

Get it?

'Cause Mom's name is Dot! Anybody?

[laughs]

Dad-jokes.

Sheesh.

You're a tough crowd.

[laughs]

[squeaking]

Huh?

[weathervane squeaking]

Lily: Hm.

I wonder what that airplane thing on top of the roof is.

Corky: I think they call it a weathervane, but

I don't know what it has to do with the weather.

[click]

Got it.

I want to investigate this more when I get a chance.

Look!

Benny: It's spinning.

Whee!

Corky: Careful, Benny! Benny: Whew!

I wonder if the weathervane gets dizzy too?

Dot: Come on, you kids, grab some boxes.

[grunts]

You probably don't remember

visiting this house when you were little,

before we moved away, do you?

Corky: Yes, I do. Lily: Me too.

Lily: Kinda. Benny: I do too.

Benny, we moved away before you were born.

Oh.

I see Grandma and Grandpa left

a lot of your great Grandpa Wallace's stuff here.

Al: Oh, I used to love making all these gadgets

with Grandpa Wallace in his workshop in the backyard.

Look, a comfy chair.

Ooh.

Hey, look!

Here we are with Great Grandpa and Great Grandma Hunter.

Corky: That's me. And that baby is Lily.

Lily: Wow.

Al: This used to be my favorite room.

Do you want to know why?

Lily, would you please open the window?

You bet.

[gasp]

[chimes moving in wind]

Benny: Wow! Lily: Woah!

Al: Your great grandpa

made all of these gadgets,

and he figured out how to make them all move.

This is amazing.

Look at that.

Cool.

[click]

[chimes move in wind]

Woah.

Ooh! Hey, Dad?

I think the wind makes these things move, right?

Well, blow me down.

That's a wonderful observation, Benny.

Hm.

Lily: The wind was also pushing that weathervane thing

on top of the house.

What exactly is wind, anyway?

Al: Well, air is all around us, right?

Lily: Right. It's what we breath Al: Exactly.

So, when air moves, it becomes wind.

Wind is moving air.

I never thought about it like that.

So, when we blow on something,

[blows]

We make the air move.

[blows]

[blows]

Cool.

[blows]

Hm.

Hey, Dad?

Is that Great Grandpa Wallace, too?

It sure is, Lily.

That was when he was a young soldier

in the army during World w*r II.

Al: When Great Grandpa Wallace Hunter joined

the Army Air Corps,

he became one of the first Tuskegee Weathermen.

They were the weather forecasters

for the famous Tuskegee Airmen.

Benny: What's a kee-gee airman?

Corky: I can answer that.

Corky: The Tuskegee Airmen were the first black pilots

of the United States Army Air Corps.

You know, pilots who fly airplanes.

Thanks to Great Grandpa

Wallace's weather reports, they were able to fly more safely.

That's right, Corky.

And he inspired me to learn more about weather science

and become a meteorologist.

Someone who figures out what the weather is going to be.

Just like him.

Dot: Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Okay, we're on it.

Bye.

Oh, dear.

That was our new TV station.

They need us to do a weather report

to fill in for a sick weather forecaster.

Wait, what?

Our movers haven't even gotten here

with any of our camera equipment.

How can we do a weather report from here?

I told them that. They're sending out a camera crew

so we can do our weather report right here.

Can we do that?

Why not?

Maybe we can set up a little mini studio

outside in our backyard.

Al: Oh, I like that idea. Let's go for it.

Dot: That's the Hunter spirit.

Okay then! We have work to do.

Dot Hunter is on the move.

Al: And I'll follow her lead as usual.

[giggles]

Corky and Lily, go look around and explore your new home.

Just keep an eye on your little brother and be careful.

Wow. I wonder what's outside.

[gasp]

It's Great Grandpa Wallace's workshop.

[door opens]

[door closes]

[gasps]

Wow!

Cool!

Hm.

L. H.?

Hey, those are my initials.

L. H. for Lily Hunter.

Glasses?

I wonder what these are doing here.

Now, where can I find an extension cord?

Lily Hunter,

I knew it wouldn't take you long to find

your Great Grandpa Wallace's workshop.

When I was your age,

I loved spending time here with your great grandpa. See?

Al: I helped him build some of his inventions

and do his weather investigations.

Most of these neat looking tools and gadgets in here

are still used in weather forecasting to this day.

Lily: Dad, what are these?

Wow.

I saw great Grandpa Wallace's plans for these,

but I never knew he built them.

He called them Flex-Specs.

Al: And he made them for you. Lily: For me?

Are you sure?

Yep. See?

L. H. for Lily Hunter.

Lily: But I already have glasses

Not like these. Oh, these are so cool.

Lily: Hm.

I wonder what they do.

Oh, snap!

Flex-Specs: Flex-Specs activated

Greetings, Lily Hunter.

Oh, you talk?

And you know my name?

Flex-Specs: I was created for Lily Hunter.

So, you must be Lily Hunter.

Flex-Specs: How can I help you, Lily?

Whoa!

I wonder what this button does.

Flex-Specs: Magnification activated.

Lily: Cool.

The glasses do the same thing

as the magnifying glasses at school.

I can see small things bigger.

Flex-Specs: Mega-magnification activated.

Lily: Whoa!

Now everything's really bigger.

Hi there, big guy.

[laughs]

Hm.

And this one.

Flex-Specs: Ultra-zoom activated

[bird chirps]

What about this one?

Flex-Specs: Object identification activated.

Flex-Specs: Thermometer.

It tells me what all these tools and gadgets are.

Flex-Specs: Barometer.

Flex-Specs: Hydrometer.

Gosh. In weather forecasting,

there sure are a lot of -ometers.

Flex-Specs: Machines that end in are used to measure things.

Thanks. Now I know. Hm.

Lily: I wonder what -ometer this is.

Flex-Specs: Anemometer.

An anemometer measures wind speed.

Wind speed.

Cool.

So this is what my dad told me

I might find here to measure how fast the wind is blowing.

An ana-, ana-

Lily: Anemometer.

Corky: That's its name?

And anima.

Na. Ugh. What does it do?

Lily: It measures wind speed.

How do you know that?

My new glasses told me. They can talk.

They're called Flex-Specs.

Great Grandpa Wallace made them for me.

So, how exactly does this amana, anima?

How does this thingy work?

Lily: I'm not exactly sure, but I know who can tell us.

Great Grandpa Wallace's anemometer.

Remember when you asked me on the way here

how we measure wind speed?

This is the very tool that does it.

[clicks]

Al: There are millions of anemometers all around

the world measuring wind speed.

They give me important information

that I use to put together my weather forecast each day.

But how does it work?

That's a good question.

Why don't you go outside in the backyard and take it for a spin?

Okay.

Come on.

[wind blows]

Hm.

I wonder how this anemometer measures wind speed?

Oh, look, that thing on top is spinning.

The wind is pushing it and making it move.

Lily: And see, as it spins, that thing there moves.

Now the wind is blowing harder.

So it's moving the air around this faster.

And now it's making this top part

of the anemometer spin faster.

And so this points to a higher number.

That's how it works.

So wind makes things move like the leaves and that weathervane.

And Great Grandpa Wallace's wind inventions

And now this anemometer.

The air pushes this, and when it spins around,

it makes this little needle move

The faster this spins,

then the needle points to a bigger number.

And that number is how fast the wind is moving.

That's how you measure wind speed.

Corky: Lily, you figured out how that an-, the ana-,

Ugh. How that thing works.

Thanks. Oh, I have an idea.

Let's look at all the things the wind makes

move and see if they move differently

when the wind blows faster or slower.

Corky: I'll record some video.

Benny: I'm going to draw picture

Lily: This will be our very own weather report.

Yeah, just like Dad's.

[gasp]

Check out that flag.

Lily: Look, the anemometer shows that the wind is blowing faster.

And now that flag is waving even more.

Look at that bird.

Lily: The anemometer shows that wind is blowing faster again.

Lily: Look how much faster that bird is flying.

The wind must be giving that bird a big push.

[chimes move in wind]

Corky: The wind is moving faster again.

Listen to how it's making more music from those wind chimes.

Benny: Ooh!

Huh?

Lily: And now the chimes have stopped because

the wind stopped blowing.

Benny: Look!

Lily: The wind is making that weathervane spin.

Corky: The wind blew it, and now it's pointing

in a different direction.

I wonder if that's what it's for.

If maybe a weathervane tells you what direction

the wind is blowing.

Corky: Of course.

I never thought of that.

Lily: Wait.

I can use my Flex-Specs to find out.

Flex-Specs: This is a weathervan

A weathervane shows you what direction the wind is blowing.

That's what I thought.

Benny: Lily! Corky! Over there.

Lily: The wind is making the kite fly.

Now the wind is blowing faster.

And now the kite is flying higher.

The faster the wind blows, the higher

the kite can fly.

Lily: I wonder how far the wind

will make this paper airplane fly.

Wow! The wind's really making it go.

Let's go

tell Dad we figured out how to use an anemometer to see

how fast the wind is moving, and how that makes things move.

There. Studio Hunter is done.

I just hope it keeps standing in this wind.

Lily: Hey, Dad.

We're back.

We had all kinds of fun with the anemometer.

Corky: Are you ready for your broadcast?

Al: I think so, Corky.

I wonder where that camera crew is.

And, hey, whatever happened to our movers?

They should have been here ages ago.

Dot: Al, we have double trouble.

It's the camera crew and the movers.

A tree fell over in the heavy wind, and it's blocking the road

Dot: Our camera crew won't be he in time for our broadcast.

And I called the movers.

They're stuck on the same road, too.

Well, okay, let's not panic.

There's got to be a way we can still do this live broadcast.

Hey!

What if you do your broadcast using your cell phone cameras?

Okay, that could work.

I just wish we had time to record some video

of the weather around town.

That was something the camera crew was supposed

to record for us.

Hmm...

I have an idea.

Maybe you could use the video Corky just recorded.

Corky: That's a great idea, Lily.

What's on it?

Lots of video of the wind and how fast

and hard it's blowing today.

Al: That sounds like just what we need.

Corky: Here you go, Mom. See?

This is perfect.

Let's use it.

Good afternoon, everybody.

I'm Al Hunter, your new meteorologist.

We have mostly sunny skies, but it sure is windy out there.

Today, we have three special guests who are going to help

me do my weather report.

My kids.

Take it away.

Lily: Hi, I'm Lily Hunter, and this is Corky.

And this is Benny.

And here's what's happening in our neighborhood.

The wind was

blowing, but it soon started blowing harder and faster.

To know how fast it was blowing, I used this.

It's called an anemometer.

It tells me how fast the wind was blowing.

When it was at this number,

this flag looked like this.

Lily: But when the wind blew faster, and the anemometer

measured it with a higher number,

Just look at that flag now.

Corky: And according to this weathervane, the wind was

blowing in this direction.

Al: We call that direction, north

And then it changed to a whole other direction,

Al: A direction which we call, east.

And there was a strong and fast wind that made the kite fly high

This is my picture of it.

Lily: One time the wind even made our camera wobble

just a little bit.

But we still got all these clips you just saw.

Al: Wow, kids, your weather report on wind

just blew me away.

Get it? Wind? Blew me away?

[laughs]

Okay, let's look at today's weather.

It's going to continue to be sunny with lots of wind.

We expect that sunshine to go right on toward

the end of the weekend.

What's that?

You loved it?

Everybody back at the station loved our broadcast.

Really?

Well, uh, I don't know.

I'll have to ask them.

Kids, would you all like to be on your dad's TV

weather report again?

Benny/Corky/Lily: Yes.

Al: The station wants them on again?

That's incredible.

Kids, I am so proud of you.

[cheering]

Al: Well, Great Grandpa Wallace's anemometer

saved the day.

Dot: Congratulations to us, Hunters

We did a fine job today reporting on the weather.

Al: You know, I think we might just be the first family

to do a TV weather report.

Lily: Maybe from now on, we should call ourselves

the Weather Hunters.

Al: Yeah. Weather Hunters.

I like the sound of that.

Al: Come on, kids.

Your mom and I are going to show you how to fly a kite.

Dot: All we need is a fast wind.

Lily: Ooh, I can tell you the wind speed using the

anemometer.

If the wind picks up, I bet you can make the

kite go even higher.

Al: I like the way you're thinking, Lily.

And action.

Here, Benny.

Hold on tight.

Benny: Whoa!

How fast is the wind blowing, Lily?

Lily: The wind is moving very fast

Corky: But look, it just changed direction.

So get ready for the kite to change direction, too.

Al: Oh, that's good information. Hang on, Benny.

Benny: Whee!
