- Alley-oop.
Wow, what an unbelievable play
by Lorenzen Wright.
I have never seen a play
like that in college.
This is unbelievable.
- Now, with Lorenzen Wright,
can he do it again?
Yes, he can.
He's on fire.
- Hello. I'm Lorenzen Wright
of the Memphis Grizzlies,
and I'm gonna show
you how I'm living
here in Memphis, Tennessee.
- We checked all his friends
from here to Atlanta,
Mississippi, everywhere,
so I don't have a clue.
- Deborah Marion is talking
about her son Lorenzen Wright.
The last time
anyone in her family saw
the 6'11" former
NBA player was Sunday night.
Marion says Wright was at his
ex-wife's home in Collierville
between 10:00 and 11:00.
When the ex woke up,
he was gone,
their car still
in the driveway.
- He was a gentle giant.
He was right there
whenever I needed him,
and he loved family.
- I'm Lorenzen Wright.
Welcome to my galaxy.
This is for me and my son,
my friends and my teammates.
- That weekend,
he needed to be home
for his sister's baby shower.
He never showed up.
I called him all, all that day.
Never answered the phone.
Never returned my call.
I'm talking
the whole three days,
he didn't call nobody back.
And I went to my church
and got some flyers made.
And I went downtown,
putting them in people cars,
saying if you've seen
this person, give me a call.
- Marion says
Wright's six kids
are taking the disappearance
really hard.
- The 13-year-old is taking it
worse than anybody
because he always call her
and he always answer her calls.
- I was
at the Baseball Hall of Fame
working on another story,
and I got a number of texts
about Lorenzen Wright,
who was sort of
the least likely figure
to go missing just because he
was so public and charismatic.
He was 34 years old
and had so many friends,
and everybody knew
where he was all the time.
It seemed so out of character,
and the fact
that it was in Memphis,
where this guy was literally
the prince of the city...
- You have kids?
What do they say about
you playing with LeBron?
Are they excited about that?
- Oh, yeah.
My daughter came,
and she got an autograph.
- He was born
November 4, 1975.
He was a little country boy
straight from Oxford,
Mississippi,
and he was just a good kid.
I first noticed his talent
with basketball
in the ninth grade.
One morning, I heard,
click, click, click.
I look out the window.
I said, "Boy, what
are you doing?"
"You told me to focus.
"Well, Mama, how am I gonna
focus if I don't be out here
before day
sh**ting this ball?"
He got me.
I couldn't say a word but okay.
He was just born
to do basketball.
- Lorenzen came
from a rural background,
but, of course, he came
to Memphis
because Memphis is a hub
of basketball talent.
One of the coaches told me
about this tall kid
at Booker T. Washington
High School.
I ought to see him play.
At that time,
he was about 6'10",
springy, very slim,
but he had the talents.
- Me and Lorenzen Wright
were best friends
growing up as kids.
He was a big goofball
growing up,
and then the clumsiness
started going away.
I would say
after his freshman year
at the University of Memphis,
that's when d*ck Vitale
really, really started saying
his name,
like, Lorenzen Wright, baby.
We knew for at that moment,
he was definitely gonna make it
to the NBA.
- With the seventh pick
in the 1996 NBA Draft,
the Los Angeles Clippers
select Lorenzen Wright
from the University of Memphis.
- The 1996 NBA Draft,
which is a seminal draft,
and it's Allen Iverson, it's
Steve Nash, it's Kobe Bryant,
and Lorenzen Wright is picked
ahead of Kobe Bryant
and absolutely
justified that selection.
He played more than 13 years,
around 800 games.
He was a reliable,
durable performer
for more than a decade,
earned more than $55 million
in contracts.
This is absolutely
an A-list NBA player
we're talking about.
- We had a connection
'cause we played together,
'cause we spent time together,
we broke bread together.
We laughed together.
We competed together.
Lorenzen was
a really good rebounder,
and for his size,
he could run the court,
had a nice little touch inside,
could sh**t it
from the outside.
When he came to the NBA,
money changes your area code,
your zip code,
your bank account.
It changes a lot
of stuff for you.
- When you're as tall as I am,
you need a really big bathtub.
- He would buy cars
like some of the people
would buy shirts
to go on their backs.
- He was a big Rottweiler fan.
So he'd fly out to Germany
to get these dogs
and bring them back over here.
- This one right here is Cujo.
- And he'd spend
a lot of money on dogs,
maybe about 300,000.
- He was the Michael Jordan
of NBA entourages.
He was very, very proud
of the fact
that he was able to share
this wealth and success
with so many other people.
- We were
The Wright Clan Crew.
And that was me and several
of his other friends.
You get that type of money,
we thought we hit the lottery.
Lorenzen would always look
after us financially,
whether it's buying vehicles,
getting apartments,
luxurious hotels
wherever you go.
Or you go to the strip club.
You go to the bars.
We went to Shaquille O'Neal's
birthday party.
We partied like rock stars.
- The whole, whole thing
is just crazy.
I can't talk right now.
- He'd done disappearing acts
like that before,
but he always told
at least one person.
That night
his ex-wife, Sherra,
might have been
the last one to see Lorenzen.
- He was fine.
And he's fine now,
and I can't--
I'm not gonna believe anything
other than that he's fine now.
- Lorenzen
didn't have enemies.
He was one of the best guys
you could ever know.
We didn't think that there
was somebody out there
would do him harm,
but that was our greatest fear.
- Just call us
and say that I'm okay.
Wherever he is,
just call and say I'm okay.
- My name is Darren Goods.
I am a retired
Memphis police officer.
I actually worked
on the Lorenzen Wright case.
Shortly after midnight,
the Germantown
Police Department dispatchers
receives a 911 call.
They got this person
in distress.
They've got
these shots being fired.
They never dispatched on them.
That first 48 hours is key
to any investigation.
So the Germantown
Police Department
dropped the ball.
There's just no if, and, thens,
and buts about it.
- Dispatchers said
when they used the information
to track the call,
they learned it was
outside their jurisdiction,
so they didn't notify
officers.
But police brass say the tower
is in Germantown.
- You know,
there was a reference to,
it must be
outside of our jurisdiction,
but they also just didn't know
where it came from--
bottom line.
- Sherra Wright wonders
why Germantown police
never followed up on the call.
- It would have been
beneficial to our family
if someone was to take
his call serious.
Who gets a phone call
with g*nshots...
and not move on it?
Who does that?
- It was
a breaking news story.
NBA superstar
Lorenzen Wright is missing.
His mother had filed
a missing person report,
and that the
Collierville Police Department
was investigating.
They received
Lorenzen's phone records.
They go pull the audiotape.
They were able to determine
the call was made
from a cell tower
that was located
in the Callis Cut Off area.
Some of the best cadaver
search dogs in this region
were involved
in the grid search.
And they quickly came
across the remains
of what we now know to be
Lorenzen Wright.
- Just to see that stain
on the ground
was so horrible, horrific.
To know that my friend...
had gone through that...
it just hurt so badly.
- This was one
of the hottest summers
in the history of Memphis.
And by the time
they found the body,
of course, it had been
out there for several days
and was in very advanced
decomposed state.
- I remember being struck
by the weight.
Here was a guy who weighed 225,
250 pounds,
who was this big, burly guy
who guarded Shaquille O'Neal.
And when they found the body,
it had deteriorated
to the point that it was
less than 60 pounds.
- I can remember
the shock, you know, of,
how could it happen
to a young man
who took pride in being
from Memphis,
who loved his community,
loved his people around him?
- Lorenzen had bought me
this comforter for my bed,
and it was too big
for my washing machine.
So I was at the Laundromat.
His police friend Dennis
came and found me.
When I saw his face down,
I knew my baby was gone.
It was like I was gutted,
like somebody just took
my insides out.
I didn't want to live
after that.
- In what was perhaps
the most emotional part
of the afternoon,
Lorenzen Wright's mother
runs toward investigators,
trying to learn more.
- Seeing Ms. Deborah...
sprint to that body,
knowing who Lorenzen was,
knowing what he meant
to this city,
I felt just like most
other Memphians, you know,
shocked, horrified, sad
because he was
Deborah Marion's baby.
- Me and my son
was thick as thieves.
I figured if I walked
in his last steps,
he'll tell me something.
It's the only reason
I wanted to walk
where he had just walked.
Yes.
- A massive crowd gathered
as word spread
that Lorenzen Wright's body
was found in a wooded area
off of Hacks Cross Road
Wednesday.
Devastated, knowing that
his life came to a tragic end.
- You definitely felt
a whole lot of pain
from the city of Memphis
when it happened.
They felt like they had lost
the hometown hero.
- To the family, the friends,
and all of the fans
of Lorenzen--
a giant of a man
whose heart was as large
and as tall as his height--
- His memorial
was right on time.
I had
the right preachers there.
I had the right person
to sing the song.
What calmed me down
was my oldest grandson
never left my side.
- Having this huge ceremony
at the arena
where the Memphis Grizzlies
play their games,
I mean, that's the level
of local celebrity he had.
You had this outpouring
of grief and love,
but also you had
this real true-crime mystery.
- Wright's mother says,
although she now has
some answers,
she still has questions.
- Who would k*ll somebody
got six children,
six kids, who helps everybody?
- Lorenzen Wright died from
multiple g*nsh*t wounds--
two to the head,
two to the chest,
and one to the forearm.
- He still had jewelry on.
He still had
an expensive watch.
It's not a robbery.
Okay, now what happened?
- Two different types
of b*ll*ts were found,
fragments of a small caliber
and the jacket
of a medium caliber.
- Spent shell casings
found at the crime scene
could indicate two shooters.
Did this look like it was
something that was personal
or some kind
of professional hit?
Who has the most to gain
from Lorenzen being dead?
- My children
don't have a father.
So...
I believe that they
should be punished.
- The rest of the world
may have moved on,
and there were other stories
and other tragedies,
But for Lorenzen's family,
they were stuck
with this profound grief,
and they don't have
the closure
of knowing what happened.
- Come here, Mike.
Mike, Mike, come here.
When Lorenzen met Sherra,
she was in college,
and he was still
in high school.
You could see it
from the beginning,
that he loved her
and she loved him.
When they got married, they
had Loren and Lorenzen Jr.
That was the glue that put
the wedding together--
the children.
- Family came before
everything with Lorenzen.
That was probably the most
important thing in his life
and then, secondly, basketball.
- He was 25 when he came home
to play for the Grizzlies.
The whole Memphis
was ecstatic.
It's like,
our hometown boy is back.
- I didn't even think
there would even be a team here
in Memphis.
We always dreamed
about having a basketball team.
- He embraced and loved
being the hometown hero.
At one point,
there was only two big names
in Memphis, Tennessee,
and that was Penny Hardaway
and Lorenzen Wright.
So he enjoyed being
in that spotlight.
- I'm the oldest guy
on the team,
so I got to be the vet.
It was just a great thing
that happened to me,
and I thank God
for bringing me here.
- This is either one
of the great pleasures
or one of the great perils
of playing in your hometown.
You want to be able to make
life a little easier
for so many people.
He buys his mom a new house.
But then the generosity
didn't stop.
There were cars, and there
were youth-basketball camps
that he started.
This was someone
who was very generous,
sprinkling his money
around town.
- You ever heard
the old story
of taking your shirt off your
back, giving it to someone?
I saw him actually do that.
- He was too generous.
Like, every year,
he would put a new diamond
in his wife's ring.
- Money was no limit.
- Whatever Sherra wanted,
Sherra got--simple as that.
She had to prove
a point to people
that she was
a millionaire's wife.
"I can buy this,
this, and this."
She changed her furniture,
like, every year.
Of course,
with millions of dollars,
you can do whatever
you want to do.
- Lorenzen was playing,
I think,
his second year
with the Memphis Grizzlies,
when their daughter Sierra--
she died of
sudden infant death syndrome.
- Members
of the Memphis Grizzlies
gathered in support
of Lorenzen Wright,
who made
his first public comments
since the passing
of his 11-month-old daughter.
- The loss of our daughter
Sierra Simone is devastating.
We loved her so much,
and we miss her dearly.
My wife, Sherra,
is a very strong woman.
And together...
we will support each other.
- The death of Sierra--I think
it just drew them apart.
They both were out
messing around.
They both were out
having affairs, you know.
And the last few years
of their marriage was unhappy.
- Years pass,
and then February 2010,
that's when he was divorced.
It was over.
Bye.
He had gone on with his life.
He was happy in Atlanta.
- In their divorce settlement,
Lorenzen was to pay
$26,000 a month
in alimony and child support.
- Lorenzen wasn't playing
basketball.
He was retired from the NBA.
So, when you're not signed
to a team,
you're not getting
those big checks anymore.
And he made
bad financial investments.
He still had money, but
it was slowly thinning out.
- When you're used to millions,
it's hard to be comfortable
with hundreds of thousands.
Now, that sounds kind of crazy,
but it's true.
- There was a tremendous
amount of pressure
for those initial investigators
to solve the case.
- All I can tell you is they're
just continuing their effort,
trying to develop--
put this puzzle together.
It has not been easy.
- Some of the stories that were
coming out about drug-related
or he owed money here,
you don't know
how much of it is true,
but it didn't sound
right with me,
just from the Lorenzen I knew.
- Sherra Wright
has told Collierville police
Lorenzen Wright left her home
carrying a box of drugs.
Deborah Marion says,
when she heard Sherra told
police that, she was hurt.
- Yes, I was.
Gonna put my son
in that category
with the th*gs in the street.
Mm-mm.
After he done worked so hard
to be who he was,
and then you're gonna
knock them down like that?
Uh-uh.
- They interviewed
Sherra several times.
And she said
that armed gentleman
came to the house
looking for him,
and she thought that
they may have had something
to do with his disappearance
and k*lling.
- She said men came
to her house
with trench coats on,
hiding g*ns.
It didn't make
no sense whatsoever.
I told the police, listen,
all this garbage she talking--
so why are y'all not
investigating her
- Do you think people think
that you may have something
to do with this?
- Who else?
- It's been four long years
since former Grizzly
and basketball legend
Lorenzen Wright
was found shot to death
in a Southeast Memphis field.
- It's like a emptiness
that never gets filled.
- No one was ever arrested,
but the furthest thing
from Wright's mother
Deborah Marion's mind
is giving up.
- I gots to keep going.
I can't stop.
If I stop, it's like nothing
would never happen.
- Lorenzen's death was one of
the biggest unsolved homicides
in about the 200-year history
of the Memphis
Police Department.
They were not able to gather
enough evidence
to file charges
or indict anyone.
This was a dark cloud
over the city as a whole.
- It wasn't a cold case.
It was a froze--
Like a cube of ice,
it was froze like that,
but I couldn't let it
stay froze.
No, uh-uh.
I had to do something.
Every year, I had him
a public birthday party
and a vigil at the FedEx Forum
and made T-shirts every year.
This one is "the city weeps."
I want to keep his name alive.
I want people
to know my son is gone.
Keep praying for me.
Keep praying,
and we get to the end of this.
I can't keep this
the rest of my life.
Something needs to be done.
- My dogs.
I breed Rottweilers.
- Oh, you do?
What is it about dogs
that makes you,
like, want to be around them?
- I mean, loyal--you know
your dog gonna be loyal to you.
You don't know about people,
but you know your dog's
gonna be loyal to you.
- I knew I was headed
in the right direction.
I knew Sherra had something
to do with it.
She the only one gonna benefit
from his death.
- Probate court records
show Sherra Wright spent
more than $973,000
in insurance money
in 10 months--
some on the children
but most going
to a new house in Eads,
an Escalade,
Mercedes, and Lexus,
and property
in Higdon, Arkansas.
- The life-insurance policy
was for the kids.
It wasn't for her.
It was for his children,
for those six children.
- Deborah Marion
is saying, "No, no, no.
"You need to look into Sherra.
Trust me.
I have this intuition."
She had family members warn her
or say, you know,
"This might get dangerous."
And she basically said,
"I don't care."
And I think, in the absence
of credible evidence,
Deborah and her theories
were pushed to the side.
And then in 2015,
Sherra writes a book titled
"Mr. Tell Me Anything"...
this book
about this philandering,
physically a*usive
professional athlete
based on Lorenzen Wright.
- She alluded to the fact
that she was gonna
release a sequel,
where the main character
would be k*lled,
which was kind of odd
because she was always
a person of interest.
We didn't rule out anyone
until the evidence
ruled them out.
- I never thought that Sherra
had anything to do with it.
I'll be honest with you,
'cause the Sherra I knew,
she cared for Lorenzen.
She loved Lorenzen.
- Innocent person
would quickly utter out, "No,"
you know, easily answer, "No."
This was a turning point
for me.
- This showed
how big a liar she is,
and that made people really
start looking at her then.
- Her story
continued to evolve
and continued to change
over the course
of the investigation.
- There was no box of drugs.
And if there was, then
I had no knowledge of that.
That was insinuated,
and that was created for,
I guess, certain purposes.
But "box of drugs" did not come
out of Sherra Wright's mouth.
- She's lying too much.
She's the one.
But we need evidence that's
gonna nail her to the wall.
That's what we need.
We don't need speculations.
- With no really good
viable leads coming in
to follow up on,
years go by before anything
of substance
comes along.
And things begin
to kind of line up.
One day I'm in my office,
and a sheriff deputy
who was assigned to the unit
knocked on the door and said,
"I have a source
that said they know
who k*lled Lorenzen Wright."
- Homicide investigations are
very complex investigations.
It's all about good leads.
Our information led us
to Jimmie Martin,
Sherra Wright's cousin,
who was in jail for k*lling
his female partner.
He named Sherra Wright
as the person
that planned and conspired
to k*ll Lorenzen.
She said that Lorenzen
was trying to k*ll her.
So she was gonna more or less
beat him to the punch.
She wanted him dead.
- Lorenzen's not into any type
of violent stuff like that,
you know.
I never saw any fighting.
- Jimmie Martin
told us he was present
when there were
some planning sessions
that were at her house
with this gentleman by
the name of Billy Ray Turner.
Sherra and Billy Wright--
they went to church together.
They were members
of the same congregation.
He did some lawn care work
for Sherra,
and they were lovers.
- I was asking
questions to everybody.
"Who is this Billy?"
I was shocked when I found out
he was a yard boy--
Lorenzen's yard boy.
But I wasn't surprised at what
happened between him and her,
because what
happened between him and her
happened between her
and a lot of hims.
- Even though Jimmie Martin
was not present
at the time of the m*rder,
he went back and helped
clean up the crime scene.
Then he and Billy Turner
drove to Walnut, Mississippi,
where they threw one of the
m*rder weapons into the lake.
So that g*n is in that lake.
That changes everything.
We had a very good
relationship with the FBI.
They have one of the best
evidence-recovery dive teams
in the world.
And the guys go
into the water.
And I don't think
it was 45 minutes.
We heard a guy say,
"We got it."
And, like, "Wait, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait, wait.
What did he say?"
They came out of the water
and had what looks
like a piece of Tupperware,
a plastic bowl.
And the guy set it down,
took the lid off.
He reached in...
beautiful 9 millimeter.
A shell casing fired
from that g*n
matched, scientifically,
a shell casing that was
recovered from the scene.
That's the m*rder weapon.
We knew then
at least that that piece
of what Jimmie Martin
had told us was true.
- I was ecstatic.
Yes, we finna get somewhere now
with the g*n.
She did it--m*rder him.
But they said, "Wait a minute.
Just because we got the g*n
don't mean we got the case."
- We got the order
from the judge signed
to do a wiretap
on both Sherra's phone
and Billy's phone.
And then we began to listen
to their conversations
and decided, "Okay, we need
to release the fact
that this m*rder weapon
was found."
- The police say they
found the g*n
they believe was used to k*ll
Wright seven years ago.
- I want them to find out
who the g*n belongs to.
- It worked.
Sherra contacted Billy,
saying that they need to talk.
They need to get together.
Within a week or so,
she flies into Memphis,
and we have a surveillance team
ready to begin following her.
She Googled something
about fingerprints on a g*n
that had been submerged
in water,
things of that nature.
And they were able to track
a couple of the phones
to the Callis Cut Off area
in very close proximity
of one another
the date of the 911 call.
- I'm in church on the floor.
I'm like...
"Jesus, please help them get
Sherra Robinson."
That's what I said
on the floor of my church.
The next day, I woke up.
They had Billy.
Thank God.
But God--
that was God doing that.
He did that for me.
- 46-year-old Billy Turner
is behind bars.
He's being held
on a $1 million bond
and was indicted on
first-degree m*rder charges.
Wright's family
has been waiting for an arrest
ever since his m*rder in 2010.
- Sherra had a history of her
ability to manipulate men.
Apparently she was extremely
desirable to some men,
and she was able
to control them
by way of that.
- Wright's ex-wife and mother
of his six children,
Sherra Wright,
arrested in California,
charged
with first-degree m*rder,
conspiracy to commit m*rder,
and attempted m*rder.
- Evil, evil, evil...
just the Wicked Witch
of the South.
- Authorities
announced the arrest
in a press conference
Saturday morning.
- We followed the evidence,
and the evidence led us
to Billy Ray Turner
and Sherra Wright.
- Not long before his death,
detectives say the pair
convinced a third person
to travel to Wright's
Atlanta home to k*ll him.
- We found out that this
was not the first attempt
on Lorenzen's life.
About a month before,
Sherra had enlisted
Billy Ray Turner
and her cousin Jimmie Martin
to go to Atlanta to k*ll him.
They saw a man
asleep on the couch
and realized
that was not Lorenzen.
- And they saw me
laying on the couch.
My heart dropped.
I'm like, "Whoa," 'cause...
I was so close to death,
you know?
'Cause had Lorenzo
had have been there,
they couldn't leave
any witnesses around.
They would've shot me, too.
- At some point,
Sherra realized
there was a greater likelihood
that she was going
to be convicted
and possibly spend the rest
of her life in prison.
- We're looking
at live pictures
where family members--
you can tell they are filled
with emotion today
as they await
this possible plea deal.
And there she is right there--
Sherra Wright.
- Ms. Wright, good morning.
- Good morning.
- The lawyers asked the court
to advance the case today
for today's docket,
indicating that there's
a possibility
that a resolution has been
reached in lieu of trial.
Is that correct?
- Yes, sir.
- On count one
of the indictment,
Sherra Wright will enter
a plea of guilty to the offense
of facilitation to commit
m*rder in the first degree.
- I've never heard
of facilitation m*rder.
The crime actually happened
because of you.
The m*rder happened
because of you.
So shouldn't you get m*rder?
- What she pleaded to
was putting it together.
She didn't plead guilty
to m*rder.
Uh-uh.
That wasn't good enough for me.
- Sherra struck a deal
with the DA's office,
and she agreed
to a 30-year sentence.
She would, in essence,
be eligible for parole
in about nine years.
And that was not enough.
- Will you be actively working
to extend her sentence
as long as possible?
- Yes. Yes.
- Do you want to see her
serve the full 30 years?
- My son's serving life.
- So, even though Sherra
had pleaded guilty,
no one had been convicted
of the actual m*rder itself.
- Have a seat, Mr. Turner.
- And then
all the things came out
in Billy Ray's m*rder trial
about what
happened that night.
- Greed is such
an evil emotion.
Sherra's lifestyle demanded
that she had much more.
And somewhere along the line,
she theorized
that she needed to get
his life-insurance money.
- I was married to
a NBA basketball player
for 13 years, April.
My watch is a car,
or my ring is a house.
- I'd say 90% of it
was about greed.
And I think that she
had personal reasons.
Sherra had just got fed up
with Lorenzen.
He had been messing around
with different women.
I think all that
just took a toll on her.
But to see him shot like that?
She is evil to do this.
- She had become accustomed
to the lifestyle
of a rich and famous.
But what mother would take
the life of her kids' father
for monetary gain?
Not only have you taken
their father away from them,
but you've taken yourself away,
because you can't be
in their lives.
There's a special place in hell
reserved for that person.
And I'll leave it at that.
- Do you solemnly swear
or affirm
that the testimony
you'll be giving in this case
is the truth, the whole truth,
and nothing but the truth,
so help you God?
Thank you. Have a seat
right here, please, sir.
- Jimmie Martin
did a really good job
in how he presented himself
and the testimony
that he gave.
- I believe she had got
her shot in in his face,
because she always talked
about how good he looked
and women stay looking at him.
I don't care what y'all say.
Billy didn't sh**t him
in the face.
That was personal.
Sherra shot him in the face.
She was right there with him.
- Billy Ray Turner--
her partner in crime,
so to speak--
I think he's just a pawn
on the chessboard of life
that she used
for what she wanted.
- It is the judgment
of this court that Mr. Turner
is, in fact, guilty
of count one of the indictment,
first-degree m*rder.
- For a person
to just ruin their life--
such a heinous act
of k*lling someone--
you wonder how much
they regret it.
- Upon the jury's verdict
of guilty,
the court shall and will set
the punishment of count one--
an indictment
of life confinement
in the Tennessee
Department of Corrections.
- When Billy Ray Turner
was convicted
in criminal court,
it was like that dark cloud
that was over the city
was lifted,
and now the skies
are all blue.
And Memphis was Memphis again.
- He can suffer
like I've been suffering
for the last 12 years--
without things.
I don't have my time.
- It's a beautiful day--
Lorenzen's jersey going
into the rafters.
Lorenzen was born
in Mississippi,
but he was a proud Memphian.
You know, he showed that
through his giving,
his time,
the giving of his money,
and had a humongous heart--
definitely gone too soon.
He's a legend,
and he'll live on forever.
- We loved him.
We absolutely loved him,
and we miss him.
- This is the best one.
This one is
the "now I can rest."
This is the last one
'cause he's resting, finally.
After all these years,
he can lay like everybody else
in the cemetery--
with his head down.
- During her parole hearing,
Sherra pled for mercy.
- It's a privilege,
and it is not something
that I have to receive
or something
that I should receive.
And I just--
I'm asking today
for your mercy.
- But some said
she still wasn't taking
responsibility for her role
in the k*lling
of Lorenzen Wright in 2010.
Sherra is up for parole again
in May 2027.
Deborah Marion plans to be
there fighting it again.
