02x02 - The Inheritance

[sawblade whirring]

[distant footsteps]

Ahh!

I'm Eli Roth.

I've spent my life

telling horror stories,

but imagine if those

stories were real

and suddenly you found

yourself stalked

and tormented by an evil spirit

and no one believed you.

I wasn't going insane.

Makes you feel helpless.

It was terrifying.

These are the actual tales

of terror as told by you,

the victim who came face-to-face

with their demons and survived.

I didn't believe people

when they say

a place is haunted

or my house is haunted.

That's the skeptical part of me.

I could not ever imagine

any of this happening

with Doug and I in this house.

Never. Never could imagine.

I didn't think

we would survive this.

We went from renting,

and this was the first time

that Doug and I could

purchase a home together.

We were so excited about it.

We saved and saved,

and so every dollar that we had

into purchasing that home.

[Doug Webb]

It was a new adventure.

This was going to be

our forever home.

What are you waiting for?

You have the keys.

Oh, right.

[doorknob rattling]

It won't open for me.

[Doug] Give it a good shove.

The house was in disarray.

Never been updated.

We had to do quite

a bit of work with it.

[Kim Webb] Look at all

this stuff they left behind.

Yeah, I guess that's

what it means

when they list it as, "As is."

[chuckling]

Got some nice antiques, though.

Yeah, not like your old junk.

What? [chuckling]

This is vintage.

Well, now you have

a mancave you can put it in.

[Doug] It hasn't been built yet.

[chuckling]

[distant squeaking]

[Kim] There was

a swing set outside.

It had three sling swings,

but only one swing would swing

like someone was

swinging on a swing set.

It freaked me out.

[gasps]

[Doug] Sorry.

Look at the swing.

[Doug] What am I looking at?

Never mind.

[Doug] Oh, Wendy just pulled up.

[Kim] Wendy, you came!

Of course, your big day.

I know this place.

I grew up down the road

and would drive by all the time.

Such great bones.

Well, we got it cheap.

Come inside and you'll see why.

Uh, actually, I, I can't stay.

I just wanted to bring you this.

Congratulations.

Are you sure?

Yeah. I'll drop by soon.

Okay.

[Doug] All right,

new mattress is on.

Bed is ready.

What's in there?

Just some old clothes.

[Kim] I found old clothes up

in the main bedroom closet,

so, I got rid of 'em.

But, eventually, I found out

that whatever's in that house

stays in that house.

[creaking]

[creaking]

[door creaking]

We had a little closet door

that started to open and close.

And that gave me the creeps

because, you know, there's,

you could feel something,

you could sense it.

[Doug chuckling] Really?

Honey, we're gonna have to strip

this entire room and paint it.

Well, eventually, but for now

this makes it feel like home.

You know what?

We are gonna make

this house great.

'Kay, I gotta go.

[soft thud]

Doug?

[thudding]

[creaking]

[Kim] Doug?

[thudding]

[thudding]

[low grumbling]

[music playing on radio]

- [gasps]

[static cracking]

[music playing]

[music stops]

[music playing on radio]

- [gasps]

[radio crackling]

[gasping]

[Kim screaming]

[Kim] Every single kitchen

cabinet door drawer was open.

There was no one

else in the house.

I thought I was going crazy.

Saying it to you now,

I know how it sounds.

But it did happen.

Okay.

You don't believe me.

It's an old house.

You know, there's drafts.

Things can move,

they can make noises.

It's more than that.

When I first told my husband

what I was experiencing,

he told me

it was my imagination.

[Doug] My first reaction was

that this just couldn't

be happening.

I do try to find a

an explanation

for any kind of

abnormality

thing happening.

Um, I try to debunk everything.

And I thought, you know,

she was just overexaggerating

the situation.

Look

why don't we just

try to forget it?

Okay?

Okay.

[Doug] Good.

Where are you going?

I gotta transform a basement.

Hold on.

Um, I'm missing tools.

Have you seen my hammer

and chisels anywhere?

No, I haven't seen them.

Take this to the basement.

- Oh.

[chuckling] Sure.

There was a space

in the basement,

and that was primarily

going to be my mancave.

I could display

all my antique signs

and radios.

It was going to be my sanctuary.

[metal clanging]

[slow footsteps]

Argh!

Argh!

I saw something out

of my peripheral vision.

It was a little creepy

but I didn't tell Kim

about what was going on.

I wanted to keep that to myself.

And I don't know if it was fear

or fear for her.

[loud hammering]

Hey.

Do we have any garbage bags?

In the kitchen, I think.

[photo frame shattering]

[photo frame shattering]

[Kim screams]

[Doug] What happened?

I can't.

[Doug] Are you okay?

They fell on their own.

Kim.

I am not imagining this.

There was something

going on in that home,

and things started to get worse.

[Doug] Hey.

Are you feeling better?

Yeah.

Not going to work today?

Not today.

The entire situation

impacted my life,

my relationships.

My friends stopped coming over,

I stopped going to see them,

and it started affecting

my mental well-being.

Call me if you need

anything, okay?

'Kay.

[Doug] For me to see her go

through these emotions was

almost words can't

put it into description.

It was

like my heart hurt for her

'cause there was nothing that

I could personally do for her.

[sawblade whirring]

[Kim] I got rid of it,

but it came back.

It freaked me the heck out.

[distant thud]

[sawblade whirring]

Argh!

[Kim] Doug?

Did you blow a fuse?

Doug?

Are you down here?

[floor creaking]

[Kim gasping]

Doug?

Are you okay?

[Doug] Kim.

You saw it, too

didn't you?

Yeah.

I didn't know what it was

but it terrified me.

And it only got

worse from there.

[Doug] This thing,

it was a black mass

that looks like a person.

Whether it was a ghost

or even a demon for that matter,

but it was definitely

something sinister.

When I finally heard from Doug

that he was experiencing

some things

I did, I felt scared

because he's very skeptical

but also felt

a sense of relief

because now he believed me

and I have someone to talk to

and figure out what we'll do.

[Doug] Everything kind

of folded into play

like a deck of cards.

Kim's stories

that she was telling me,

I couldn't debunk it.

I could not even try

to make sense of it.

I could no longer deny

that something was

going on in the house.

I was walking out

of the bathroom,

and I felt something glaring

up at the steps to go

to the main bedroom.

I wouldn't look, so,

I just held my camera out

and snapped the picture.

Then I zoomed in

so I could show him.

And this is the picture.

[Doug] That was standing

at the top of the steps.

There's really no

explaining that away.

[Kim] I called my friend

who knew that house

and told her some

of the things that's happened.

[Wendy] The people who

owned the home before you

they were

really nice people.

And then something

happened and they changed.

They became shut-ins.

No one ever visited them.

No one ever saw them.

I'm sorry what

you're going through.

What happened to them?

They died.

In the house.

Their bodies weren't

found for months and

What?

It's just rumors.

Nobody

- What rumors?

They say it was

a m*rder-suicide.

Why didn't you tell me that?

You'd already bought the house,

I didn't want to freak you out.

[Kim] No one told me

those things happened.

I was, I was kind of upset.

I think my exact response was,

"Why in the hell didn't

we find out about this

before we bought the house?"

[Kim] The entities wanted

me to know they were there

and they weren't going anywhere.

And they scared me.

I felt as though

I would have ran,

but I did not want to do that.

We were going to make

the house our own.

You already moved the photos?

What?

No, I didn't touch the photos.

You didn't move them?

No, I

[distant scraping]

Hear that?

[distant buzzing]

[louder buzzing]

[buzzing stops]

[buzzing recommences]

[buzzing grows louder]

[Kim screams]

[Kim] The house was

infested with flies.

We didn't know where

they were coming from.

That was terrifying.

[Doug] It wasn't one

or two bugs here and there.

It was

hundreds of 'em

out of nowhere.

[Kim] The exterminator

couldn't explain

where they were coming from,

uh, 'cause everything

was sealed.

There was no explanation for it.

At all.

I was getting weaker.

I was vulnerable.

Didn't even want to be

in the world anymore.

It k*lled my soul.

Like, it k*lled me as a,

a wife, a mother,

a grandmother, and a friend.

I didn't think things

could get any worse.

[Kim screams]

Kim!

[Kim screaming]

Hey, hey! What happened?

Get out of here!

Leave us alone!

[screaming hysterically]

I was so mad and angry

that I wanted

to physically fight

with my hands and hurt somebody.

[screaming hysterically]

Get out!

She would start breaking plates

or, uh, throwing things

across the kitchen.

The anger and the rage,

it was out of control.

This was not

the person that I know.

It was definitely

a scary situation.

[distant footsteps]

[distant chatter]

Kim?

[Kim] No, no

[mumbling]

Kim?

What are you doing?

[screaming]

[Kim] Doug?

[breathing heavily]

I can't take this anymore.

This needs to end.

Things really

progressed to the point

where I had to call in a medium.

What is it?

There's presence here.

More than one.

[Doug] We walked

through the house,

she got a feel for the house,

told us a little bit

about the entities

of what was going on.

They don't want

you in their home.

[fly buzzing]

[medium] Changing.

Moving.

Destroying.

They were angry that we

were remodeling

or fixing-up

or doing renovations

to that home.

You should leave.

You're in danger.

[Kim] We can't.

We put everything

we have into this place.

We just want them out.

[Doug]

Please, can you help us?

[sighing]

I can try.

[Kim] So, everything

was validated.

There was an explanation

for things that were happening.

[Doug] We walked the home

top to bottom,

and she was able to cleanse

with blessed salt,

holy water, and sage.

The house was so much calmer.

I mean, the air was

so much easier to breathe.

The problem was,

I think it angered

the entities that

were in our home

because of where it led.

[thudding]

[door creaking]

[whimpering]

Doug!

[Kim screaming]

[Doug] Kim!

[Kim] Stop!

Let me out!

Stop!

[Kim whimpering]

[screaming]

That was the most

terrified I've ever been

in my life.

Upstairs in our closet,

we found pictures

of my entire family

taped to the walls.

I think it was targeting

everything that I loved.

And it was a message to me

to either get out

or I'm taking 'em.

If we didn't leave,

there was no doubt in my mind

I would not have

survived in that house.

We packed what we

could and just left.

We moved to another state.

Just start over again

from scratch.

Leaving the house was

the best decision we made

for our health

and for our marriage.

[Doug] Not only do

I have my wife back

as the Kim I knew before,

but our relationship

is growing and growing

stronger and stronger.

[Kim] Today, I'm happy.

I'm getting back to who I was.

It's not easy, but I'm,

I'm almost there.

It's always in the back

of your mind that

can something

come back at us

[Kim] Mmm.

now that we've

been open to this

life, if you will,

or another realm?

Especially telling

the story in detail.

Is it gonna come back?

- Yeah.

Or something could come back.

It made me a little nervous.

Tried to bury those memories,

but they're still

memories that come up,

and I know I tried to bury them.

[Doug] It's always there.

Yeah, I think telling

the story, it's

good therapy, to be honest.

Well, I do pray now.

So, 100% pray.

Um, so, we just

start believing

that there is

A higher power.

Yeah, that will keep us safe.

The entities terrorized us

because we changed

everything they knew,

and everything,

they wanted to stay the same.

And to my knowledge,

and we've been gone two years,

no one is in that home.

No one lives in that home.

I wanted to tell my

story so that people

will know that I wasn't crazy,

and then also people

who have experienced

things like this as well,

that you're not crazy.

That these things are real

and it will

affect your life.
