it does have a lot of unique details,

and I really want to showcase
my abilities.

I have a bachelor in fine arts.

I was in the number one sculpture program
in the country.

So I'm going to use my background
in painting and color matching,

and it immediately excites me.

I know all your cakes are gonna be fire.

[Liz] May your cakes be fire.

I am making a cinnamon vanilla cake

with a cookie butter,
salted caramel Swiss meringue buttercream,

covered with white chocolate ganache.

I cannot believe your cake
is done already.

Me?

Like, it's going in the pans.

-Oh. Yeah.

All right, don't let this thing take off.

I'm back in the kitchen,

and I'm so excited
because in the last challenge,

I had to make a BOSU ball.

It was the largest cake
that I could have done,

and it didn't trick the judges.

I want to win. I cannot leave this place
without some money.

-Look at that small amount of cake.
-I am ridiculously happy about it.

I am making the ukulele.

I'm feeling great. Got a small cake.
I'm not dealing with a big thing,

so it's gonna let me show
a little more detail work,

because I feel like the judges get excited
when they walk up to the cake

and they see details that they didn't see.

Hey, Kayla, what flavors
are you doing today?

I feel like in college,
you are, like, kind of broke,

so you have to eat a lot of PB&Js.

I'm making a peanut butter and jelly cake.

-Oh, I love that.
-[Elizabeth] Oh, nice.

[Kayla] I am making a white cake
with peanut butter buttercream,

a strawberry and grape jam filling,

and chocolate ganache.

-What college did you go to?
-I went to the University of Lafayette.

-[Spirit] Very nice.
-At Louisiana. ULL.

Were you in any social clubs?

-Yeah, I was in a sorority.
-[Spirit] Hey, now!

[Kayla] Kappa Delta.

I was known as the crazy cake girl.

[Spirit] Okay.

Did you go to college, my dear?

I did. But I didn't go to college
until much later in life.

I didn't have, like, a fun, partying,
I think, typical college experience.

I did party a little bit in college.

[giggling]

Mm. Oh my God.

[Spirit] Oh, you tasting something.

-[Liz] It is really good.

Of course it is. You're making it.

It's special to come to an environment
where people who use my recipes

get to see that I'm a passionate
cake decorator, just like they are.

I was trying to think
what would go with college.

I think I'm gonna do
a chocolate chip cookie cake.

I'm making a brown butter
chocolate chip cookie cake

with Nutella filling,
cream cheese frosting,

and a bittersweet chocolate ganache.

What I think is weird is,
when you brown butter,

it smells like nuts.

-Yeah, it does. It does smell like nuts.
-[Kayla] Yeah.

[Liz] I picked the sweaters
because they're more of a natural shape.

I'm not really good
at super straight edges.

I think it's ridiculous
that you would even see

a folded piece of clothing in college,
but whatever.

But I'm a little concerned about
how to make this fabric the right texture.

-Cake's going in the oven!
-Ay!

I have never actually
made clothing before.

I know that is going to be
a big challenge,

but I'm up for it. I like a challenge.

Another cake going in the oven.

-Where did you go, Spirit?
-I went to Clark Atlanta University.

I was raised in Los Angeles,

and, you know, coming from a family
with a lot of siblings,

all the schools I applied to
were out of state.

I have a lot of siblings.

I have 14 sisters and four brothers.

So I needed
just a little space away from 'em.

[laughs]

My sisters, there's, uh,
Righteousness, Reality, Eternity...

Righteousness?

Yeah. Righteousness, Eternity,

-Unity, Consciousness.
-[Kayla] Wow.

Consciousness?

Last challenge,

I was not able to fool the judges.

This time, I really want to trick them
and put some money in my pocket.

Flavor's important too.

Obviously, it saved my butt last round.

This round, I'm going to make
a vanilla cake

with key lime pie filling,

toasted coconut buttercream,

and a graham cr*cker,
macadamia, coconut crust.

Mmm.

It's good!

I chose the printer because it's boxy.

It's something that people
may or may not see all the time,

so it's possible
to get away with this one.

Coconut almost done.

But it's gonna be a little challenging
to get all those details in.

So I'm gonna channel that creative spirit
and figure it out.

[serene music playing]

It is what it is until it ain't, right?

Expectations are very high now.

[upbeat music playing]

Bakers.

Ooh, decoys!

-Oh my gosh!

-Look at all those greasy bags.

[Spirit] Feels like Christmas.

Danya, I have
your old Chinese food from 1999.

-That's what it smells like.

With the Chinese food,
there are so many different aspects.

There's the takeout containers.

There's the fortune cookie.
There's the bag.

There's the noodles,
there's the egg rolls.

There's so many different textures.

So much Chinese food!

I'm extremely nervous
because it's a lot of work to do,

and I'm here
with all these other amazing people.

There's really no time to make mistakes.

It's not what I want
to be smelling right now.

[Elizabeth] You can do it, Liz!

-This is how I shop actually.
-[Elizabeth] One trip, you can do it.

[Kayla] Crazy contraptions over here.

I'm making a standing-up cake,
because it has to go on that stand,

and so I know
that I have to use chocolate ganache.

It's so fudgy, and it gets strong.

This is so fun.

[Liz gasps] Kayla, that looks so good.

I just have to put the hole in it,
and then connect it to the cake.

Woot.

-I'm excited, but I need to speed it up.
-So good.

I really have to win this challenge,

because after seven years
of teaching sixth-grade science,

I left my job to pursue my dream of cake.

I told people
I have a passion that is bigger,

and here I am chasing my dreams.

There we go.

For the takeout boxes,
I'm using edible icing sheets,

because they already look like paper,
so these are gonna look realistic.

-Carving the most perfect rectangle?
-Shh, girl.

[chuckles]

[sighs]

As easy as it may sound to make a printer,

because it just looks like a box, right,
to the naked eye,

it's more than just a box.

You have to make sure
the dimensions are proper.

You don't want it too small or too big,
because it's gonna be like an eyesore,

and I'm gonna have to make sure
that the cake isn't bulging on the sides.

Luckily, I am obsessed
with straight lines.

This is what I'm known for.

I know that if I put my effort
into every little crevice,

it gives me my best chance
to win this game.

Spirit, those edges are looking amazing.

-So crisp and sharp.
-[Pete] They're like, boom.

[Spirit] And they're not even gonna see
this part. It's gonna be covered.

Do you guys ever play beer pong?

Dude, Pete, I know you played beer pong
every day at BYU!

I have never.

-[Mikey] Really?
-Unh-unh.

Were there parties at BYU?

There's definitely a party scene.

Right, but responsible partying.

Like, you know how people play Uno
for pints and those kind of things?

But instead of pints of beer,
it was water.

[laughter]

[Liz] So if I get cold, can I put
one of these sweaters on? [laughs]

I'm looking at this pile of sweaters,

and all I can see
is just tons and tons of wrinkles.

I don't want to move my shirts.

I have made so many types of cakes,

but when it comes to making fabric,
I've never done this before.

So I decide that I'm going
to cover the cakes in fondant,

because I think
that's going to be the easiest

to make look really smooth
and, like, fabric-y.

Ooh, baby!

And then I have to sculpt
every single wrinkle.

This is a weird shape.

But creating natural folds
is incredibly difficult.

It's like sculpting water.
Like, what does water really look like?

I'm using the colored edible powders
to sort of dab on some fluffy texture.

It's very imperative
that I make this cake not shiny,

or nobody's gonna believe
it is a sweatshirt.

I could just sit here
and make little wrinkles forever.

But I'm not going to.
I'm going to move on. [chuckles]

Three hours!

Yeah, baby!

I'm still freaking mixing this color.

I'm spending a lot of time on the bag,

because I know that this bag
is gonna be make or break.

If the bag looks super fake,

then it'll be an instant giveaway
that this is a cake.

At first, it's looking
a lot more like fabric,

which is not what I want.

Oh, sh**t.

I realized that if I pinch the fondant
in a specific way,

it gives it a really sharp edge,

the way that the folds of the paper bag
are on the decoys.

-That paper bag looks so good.
-Yay, we can see!

-I know.
-It's amazing.

-I'm over fondant. I can't. I cannot.
-No?

Not on these sharp corners, man.
It's so trash.

This cake has really sharp corners, right?

But for some reason,
fondant's just not working for me.

It's bubbling, and it's just creating,
like, this elephant skin,

and I'm really frustrated at this point.

That's an automatic, "You go home.
That is cake." This is some...

I'm gonna do modeling chocolate
'cause this...

[groans]

This is a nightmare.
I need that gray to be gray.

This one, it doesn't need to be exact.
Let's just color it, get it on here.

Time is ticking.

Oh, Jesus, what do I do?

Just leave it. Just leave it.

Oh my God, my God. What do I do?

It's gonna be a quick race to the finish.

[Kayla] Oh my gosh.

I'm so happy
these things only have four strings.

I have this recipe for an edible fabric.

It's like a gelatin.

Okay, I need glycerin.

It won't be as thin as the strings,

but the beauty of this recipe
is that it's very stretchy

and I'm able to stretch it out

to where it looks so realistic
and has the movement of a string.

I really hope this works,

because I don't have time
to make mistakes.

Four strings is all we need. That's all.

Hmm.

-That looks really good.
-[Liz sighs] I feel like it doesn't look...

It looks good,
but it doesn't look like a shirt.

It still looks like a cake.

Time is not my friend.

I still need to add the logo,
cover an entire hat,

and stack it all together.

That's a lot.

I just keep telling myself,
"I asked for this." [laughs]

For my logo,
I only have time to do one sweatshirt,

because I have to hand-paint the hat.

It's like a curved surface.

So the other sweaters have to be folded

in a way that looks like they have
the logo, but you just can't see it.

I mixed some fondant
that looks like a similar color,

and I knead in a little bit of yellow
and a little bit of white

so there's marbling,

so the noodles aren't just
completely opaque, one color.

I'm wondering, like, is Spirit gonna use
maybe wafer paper to put on her printer?

I'm sure she will.

I'm trying so many things
to make the fondant look like fabric.

wet fondant situation,

and I'm just now starting to look around
at what everybody else is doing,

and definitely feeling nervous,

because everybody's cakes
look really good.

is not gonna be on this cake today.

And I still have to carve out time
for the decoys.

I don't want them to see these details.

I'm trying to distress the decoys enough
so it looks like a poor paint job.

than I was expecting.

I think I was overly confident
choosing the sweaters,

[Kayla] So I did a peanut butter and jelly
cake on the inside.

The top is strawberry jelly.
The bottom is grape.

I feel like, in college,
you're broke and you eat a lot of PB&Js.

[Chris] What impressed me was the hollow...

The woodgrain close up is amazing.

-How did you do the neck of the guitar?

[Kayla] The whole front face of the guitar
is actually chocolate.

to Danya's cake.

Danya, will you tell them about it?

[Danya] Yeah, it's a cinnamon vanilla cake

with a cookie butter buttercream
and salted caramel.

-Whoa, that's really good!
-Wow, that's great.

The flavors are incredible.

-The cinnamon, then that caramel.
-Thanks.

Almost like cereal. It's got that vibe.

Yeah. And the shading on this bag
is really good.

The noodles are even more impressive
up close.

They're, like, shiny.

Yeah, I painted them with, um, corn syrup.

-Wow, wow, wow.

All right, let's move on to Spirit's cake.

[Spirit] I did the vanilla cake
with a key lime pie filling,

a macadamia, graham cr*cker coconut crust

filled with a toasted coconut
Italian meringue buttercream.

-[Chloe] Mmm!
-Oh, I love that!

The topping, that's chocolate.
You can eat it.

-[Chris] Oh, yeah!
-[Mikey] There you go.

Whoa!

Oh, wow, look at this.

This is so weird and cool.

-[Spirit] That is a ganache.

That's how I got the sharp edges
to fool you.

That peanut butter jelly
was really unexpected.

The thing with the ukulele
is it's, like, thick layers.

-These have thin, beautiful layers.

This was my favorite taste.

-The cinnamon was really good.

The chocolate ganache was amazing.
