But to meet our companions
on this planet,

we must travel far and wide

with our hearts, our minds,
and our ears

open to their secrets.

The animals
have unique perspectives

towards life on Earth,

and their lessons can help
enrich our own human experience.

And this ground squirrel
has avoided birds of prey

ever since a hawk
ate most of his family.

Yes, these wild creatures
are often struck

with feelings of inexplicable
dread and unease,

as with these rock rabbits
in Kenya.

literally thousands
of decisions every day

simply to navigate life
in the natural world.

This hectic pace affords
our wild animals

little time to relax and unwind,

and even less time to reply to
the hundreds of unread e‐mails

that clutter their inboxes.

Mirren: But every so often,
they can take a moment

to soothe their weary nerves,
like these Japanese macaque.

Certainly, instinct
and evolution play a part.

But when an animal must make
a truly difficult choice,

I mean, very few of them
have pockets.

I suppose other animals

could just ask a kangaroo
to keep stuff for them.

as we observe

through the wild,

they must deftly avoid

any number
of physical dangers ‐‐

from aggressive predators
to poisonous flora

to big, dumb hippos who just
slam their brakes on

in the middle of the road
for no reason.

Even more concerning
for our animal cousins

is that sustaining an injury
would instantly make them

a highly vulnerable target
to outside threats.

After all, there are
no hospitals in nature.

Although wouldn't that be sweet?

I mean, I can just imagine
a chimpanzee

wearing a tiny lab coat
with a stethoscope

in his cute little ears.

chimpanzee costume.

But what happens to an animal
when they discover

they are the ones
being deceived?

This red squirrel
in the North American woodlands

is about to find out.

to share resources,
and raise young.

And every Thursday night,

they meet at Russell's
studio apartment

and play board games.
