[Danielle] Down there, totally unaware

we're watching them

[Sara] Yeah! Y'all ready to swim?

[Danielle] are Sara and Eric Davis

and their five kids.

-[boy] Put the floaty in the back seat?

-[Sara] Yes.

[Danielle] They're leaving right now

for some fun in the sun

at their cousin's pool.

[man on radio] Family is in the car.

Time to move in.

[suspenseful music playing]

What they don't know

is while they're all having a good time,

we are about to renovate their home

inside and out.

In one day!

Sara's mom, Karen, submitted

her daughter's family for our show,

but they have no idea they were chosen.

I wanna nominate

my daughter and her family.

They're wonderful people,

they're loads of fun.

But her house is the issue.

We have been married 16 years.

[Eric] Always amazes me

how fast time flies.

-[Sara] Yeah, it's crazy.

-Yeah, it's crazy when you're in love.

[laughs]

[Sara] We are parents of five kids

ranging from 17 to 7.

-Why don't you set these around the table?

-[girl] Both hot sauce.

[Sara] Our family has never just been

only about us.

[girl] Thank you, Lord, for this food.

Thank you for this amazing day.

[Sara] We're currently the children's

church pastors at our church.

[all] Amen.

It's very humbling and very cool

that people see something in our family

that makes them say, "How can we do it

like you guys have done it?"

Our house, there's a lot of love,

but there's a lot of wear and tear.

I was growing and learning.

So, yeah, you're gonna see stuff like

There's no excuse for sticky floor tiles

to be screwed into the wall.

[Eric] Because the oven

makes them melt off!

And from a distance?

-I've never done a backsplash.

-You can still see from a distance.

[Eric laughs] Okay, okay.

We built these together.

Pinterest said it was a four-hour project

and it took us three weeks.

There's a lot of original 1982 stuff.

The siding has never been replaced.

The boys are all in the largest room.

-It's definitely crowded.

[Sara] There's no organization.

We would like to see

more space if that's possible.

That probably just looks like

someone coming in

who knows how to make the space work.

Girls are currently on a bunk bed.

Tiny, tiny room.

[Trinity] A little harder sharing a room

with someone who's ten years younger.

It'd be amazing

if I could get my own room.

[Zion] I don't like sleeping alone.

[laughs] That doesn't mean

that we have to share a room.

-Yes, it does.

-Not always.

[Sara] This is our schoolroom.

Everybody here

has technically their own cubby.

But, really, a cubby for a whole

school year is not realistic.

As parents, as homeschool teachers,

as a family, we're good in those areas.

Our house has suffered.

Our house, we're not so good at.

They're just real special people

all the way around. They give a lot.

They don't expect a lot.

And to do this would be

such a huge blessing for them.

[Danielle] Karen's sole job today

is to keep the family away from the house

from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Any longer than that,

the family's gonna know something is up.

So our team has just 12 hours

to make over the entire house.

This is not just one room or two rooms

and a little flower outside.

No. They're gonna leave this morning

and come home to a completely new house.

[squeals] Game on! Here we go!

The idea that they do school in here

I'm freaking out, but I'm also excited.

on this siding.

This family is the definition of a unit.

-[Adair] The family's beautiful.

-The house needs some work.

-The house needs a lot of work.

A little overwhelming, to say the least,

but exciting.

[Erik] I think we should

break it down step by step.

All right, so, we're gonna

walk through the entire house.

Nick, start us on the outside.

I got it.

So first thing, we're getting rid of that

rotted, peeling paint on the siding,

replacing it with this new vertical look,

which complements number two.

We are gonna build this massive overhang.

We replace those Adirondack chairs

with these egg chairs,

-so it's kind of quartered off for them.

-Wow.

[Nick] This is their space to relax.

The front yard is gonna be planted

with all these grasses.

This is Sara and Eric's space,

and this is gonna come first in our build.

I don't know how we're going to do that

and not block the front door right now.

I think it's really beautiful.

I commend you guys.

But this is the only entrance.

That's gonna be a major issue

if you guys are blocking the whole front.

I need to be able to get in there.

I have demo happening in there.

I have electrical, I have plumbing.

-You and I are gonna have to work on that.

-This sounds crazy.

Okay. But just keep going.

This sounds crazy.

[Erik] Uh, I'm just

not gonna think about it for a moment.

-Talk to me about the inside of the house.

-Okay.

Take me to the kitchen.

I wanna see the kitchen.

First thing I notice in the kitchen,

they have a flush mount light in your face

as you're doing the dishes.

-That needs to change.

-[Paige] Comfortable.

They are really into DIY,

but they just don't have the resources

to do the full DIY renovation experience.

That's really nice of you to say.

The way that she said it,

that was really, really nice.

All new flooring in the kitchen,

all new appliances, new hood.

Storage here with open shelves.

They love an open shelf. You have it here.

How are you having breakfast, dinner,

lunch, anything together as a family

with a table that only seats

four, maybe five?

-Banquette seating is what I'm proposing.

-[Erik] Yup. Okay.

[Adair] And the living room.

It's a gathering place for everyone.

This family loves to be together.

Right now, the have okay seating.

But what we really should focus on here

is more seating, make it more comfortable.

All right, so we are

in the boys' bedrooms.

It needs lots of work,

but I like the vibe,

this community

that they have going on in here.

[Paige] We are creating a pre-built,

three-person bunk bed

that has some loft style to it.

We're also creating more organization

and a place for them to sit and hang out.

Trinity, the oldest,

and Zion, the youngest,

are not only sharing a room,

they're sharing a bunk bed.

And I remember being this age,

I feel it's super important that

Trinity in Zion have their own spaces

Specifically Trinity, but Zion too.

So I made the decision that

it was so important for me,

personally, to separate Trinity and Zion,

that I've now turned their bedroom

into just Zion's room.

We are making this

an eight-year-old's dream.

And thankfully, Erik, no builds.

[laughs] Thank you.

[Paige] Now we're moving into

what used to be the schoolroom

and is now Trinity's very own bedroom.

[Erik] Okay, right off the jump,

how do you propose that we

actually allow them to have school?

So take me to the backyard, please.

There's nothing in the backyard.

Why would we go there?

-[Adair] Drum roll!

-Yeah, drum roll.

[Erik laughs]

[Paige] A full schoolhouse

in the backyard.

This is a pre-built, it's the entire

reason that it's on a trailer.

I want them to come out and just go,

"Wow. That is so cool."

"I can't wait to go

to school every single day."

First of all,

nobody's ever said that ever.

[laughter]

[Erik] Uh, but do we know anything about

the landscape, the footprint of the house?

The driveway, how we're getting in,

is there fencing?

We know that it's a slope,

and we know that it's kind of steep.

[Erik] The biggest concern

is getting it to the place.

We need to figure out

how we're gonna do that.

You and I need to discuss

exactly what you have in mind

so that we can work within the limitations

of building a house on a trailer.

But I need to sit down with each of you

to discuss timeframes,

because I can't do this and the front

and the kitchen simultaneously.

We're gonna figure it out.

But right now that's the thing

that's giving me agita.

[upbeat music playing]

[Nick grunts]

-So essentially we have this giant box.

We're gonna set it

right on the house via forklift.

We'll bring the forklift right

down the hill. Just drive it right up.

'Cause the other alternative was

that we build the box right on the house,

-which we don't have time to do that.

Okay, let me explain something to you.

Let me explain how hard

these guys have been working,

and how much time they do not have.

So, do you see this red portion?

This represents the facade

that has to get on this house.

There's going to be a big old forklift

that is going to block

the entrance and exit of that home.

If we don't get this handled,

it's gonna push this whole schedule back

into the next day, and the next day,

and the next day.

And we don't have all them days!

So I'm gonna go check on the team.

[upbeat music continues]

We got the cladding going on

on the outside of the tower right now.

Two cuts going on,

and then on the front, we've got another

I heard none of that

because I have sawdust in my eye.

[blowing] You'll be all right.

We need you to move faster.

We are, we're moving as fast as we can.

this blocking us for too long.

We're about to finish

putting the French cleat up

so we can get the box on.

So I came up with a ridiculous way

to get in the door faster.

is four of these

quarter-inch-steel French cleats.

This is gonna hold 1,000 pounds?

I don't know that anybody's

hung a 1,000-pound-cabinet on

So what's gonna happen is,

we're gonna attach one to the house.

And then when we slide the box on top,

they're just gonna

lock in place like that.

-It's gonna be beautiful.

This should take our time down

from roughly two hours

down to maybe 15 minutes.

No, I'm not sure of anything.

before Adair has a heart attack.

[Erik] Nick, in just a sec,

That's the next thing to go in.

[Erik] I'm gonna try to put weight on it.

[Erik] If you get a pry bar

hope he doesn't hurt himself. This is

but it took an hour.

We're 45 minutes behind inside,

and it is insane in there.

There's so much happening right now.

It's wild.

[Danielle] Is this not bananas?

All of this is because of you.

You nominated your lovely family.

So where are they now?

They're at her brother's house,

in the pool having fun.

They have no idea

and they're gonna be so surprised.

They're just wonderful people.

They do a lot for others,

and they're so giving.

And your daughter, she also homeschools.

She homeschools, five kids.

The room where they homeschool,

it's a chaotic mess.

What are the land and climate

of Egypt like? Who remembers?

[Sara] We didn't want a life

where we had kids

and then worked 40, 50 hours a week

and didn't ever see them.

So when our oldest was entering

third grade, we decided to bring her home.

And we've homeschooled

all of the rest after that.

So now we see each other all the time,

but we like it.

[Eric] She's got such patience,

to be a teacher

and to be a mom in the same house,

to impart values in a fun way

that the kids look forward to doing it.

-[upbeat music playing]

Erik and I created a schoolhouse,

but we were having

a lot of trouble in the warehouse

figuring out how we were gonna

get it into the backyard.

[Erik] We've talked about the schoolhouse.

This is the pitch of the Davis' driveway.

You created this area specifically

[Erik] Specifically to run the test

to see if we can actually

get the schoolhouse down the driveway.

We've created a prop schoolhouse

that's the same size and dimensions,

same weight as the schoolhouse.

We have it on the trailer

that we're going to use

to transport the actual schoolhouse

to the site.

-[Nick] Cool.

[Erik] All right. Let's do it.

There's too much forward weight

so as he started to come down the pitch,

it just tumbled right off.

That means back to the drawing boards

and figure out what the next solution is,

because, at the moment, I don't have one.

I was hoping that would work.

Erik has come up with the brilliant idea

of taking the structure and craning it

over the house into the backyard.

And my biggest concern is that, like,

if the wind picks up,

we're gonna be in a lot of trouble.

If this structure starts swinging,

we could hit electrical lines,

we could hit the house.

You could take out

everybody's power on the block.

How many feet in the air

do you think this is gonna go?

A lot of feet. The biggest issue

that we have facing us right now

is that when this is in the air,

there can be nobody underneath

this structure when it's moving.

and the creek don't rise,

if that thing does fall,

then we do have an issue.

working on your home

from the inside out, and, like

like transforming your place.

It was weird to see the house that, like,

I grew up in, completely different.

I was shocked.

I was like, "Oh, my gosh,

there's no way they could've done this

in the couple hours we were gone."

It looks amazing.

To walk in and everything just looks

I can't wait to be cooking

we're in a restaurant right now.

the schoolhouse, I looked over,

and my mom, who was my teacher,

is standing on her back porch over there,

And for her to see her daughter getting

a schoolhouse for her and her kids

Speechless. I'm speechless.

This is so cool. Yeah, this is.

-[Danielle] All the new memories.

-This is the dream. Yeah. This is awesome.

All these new memories

are gonna be made here, and

Yeah, to have our own designated space

where we "go to school,"

and have that as part of the routine

"Okay, we're going to school."

"Okay, we're going home."

And being able

to kind of separate that, and

That just makes sense. This is amazing.
