desert nothing but rocks and where do
rocks go for a good time
where else a rock concert
[Music]
tonight's concert is in support of save
our soil so remember keep our dirt clean
oh this is gonna be so great the bowling
stones haven't played together for ages
yeah cause they're always fighting their
last concert almost got cancelled
because they couldn't agree on what
flavor rock candy to have backstage well
looks like everything's going smoothly
tonight that's the most ridiculous thing
i ever heard how are you calling
ridiculous i marilyn metamorphic rock
say nothing tops metamorphic rock so i
should go on stage first
you shouldn't
it's me iggy igneous rock that puts the
fire in this band chill dudes everyone
knows that since elementary rock is the
coolest you've really lost it well if
that's how you feel
i quit
you can't
i quit first i did not
whoa there dudes i quit first and you
know what i'm going home me too me too
oh my stars they've gone home
great now what if they don't play
they're going to be a lot of very
unhappy rocks around here we've got to
find them and bring them back this is a
job for the zula patrol yeah but how do
we find them we don't even know where
they're from well then we'll just go
wherever you find igneous sedimentary
and metamorphic rats but where's that
let's find out in the multopedia
there are three different kinds of rock
igneous sedimentary and metamorphic
which one is which depends on how
they're formed
rocks are formed in the earth itself and
in many different ways igneous rocks
start out as hot liquid rock called
magma
magma is found below the earth's crust
or surface
sometimes the magma bubbles up to the
surface like it does in a volcano when
it comes to the surface it's called lava
and when lava cools it becomes igneous
rock of course the magma below ground
can also become igneous rock
sedimentary rocks are formed at the
bottom of rivers seas and oceans by clay
filth sand and pebbles settling on top
of each other so that explains igneous
and sedimentary but what about the third
kind of rock metamorphic metamorphic
means to change so metamorphic rocks are
just igneous or sedimentary rocks that
have been changed of course it takes a
long time for them to change and it
takes a lot of heat or a lot of weight
pressing on them to make them change
into metamorphic rock like when
mountains are formed
see the layers of sedimentary rock in
the ground are pressed and cemented
together really tight and pushed up from
inside the earth
after a long time those layers of
sedimentary rock change they stick
together and you get metamorphic rock
and a mountain
igneous rock can also become metamorphic
rock in the same way
you really know your rocks eater yep i'm
a real rock fan
[Music]
okay
now we know what the different rock
types are and that they're formed in
different ways but how does that help us
find iggy sit in maryland we'll start by
looking in the places each type of rock
is formed and since the places are all
very different we better get going wait
what about the audience they're waiting
to hear some music oh right
okay
zeder and i will go find the rock group
you four stay here and try to keep the
audience busy we'll be back soon
[Music]
you said igneous rocks are formed from
lava that is cool so a volcano is the
perfect place to look for iggy igneous
luckily i packed my testing kit this
morning time to attack some rocks this
rock is pretty dark
it looks like it could be from a volcano
and my rock field guy says some igneous
rocks are pretty hard
we're in igneous rock territory all
right i bet iggy's around here someplace
iggy
iggy igneous that's my name don't wear
it out
iggy you've just got to come back to the
concert no way no how no chance i've had
it with those two the bowling stones are
finished kaput
in the story
come on zeder let's go find maryland
metamorphic and sid sedimentary two
stones are better than none wait cool
i've got an idea
hey iggy could we leave you this zulu
phone you know just in case you change
your mind a dream it mate but sure why
not hey
hot looking phone what if i can get
cartoons on this thing
this mission may take longer than we
thought
i hope malto and the others are keeping
the audience busy don't worry i'm sure
they've got something rocks and rockets
pebbles of all ages we present tonight
for one night only
the rocking patrol
[Applause]
the stripes in that canyon wall tell me
we're in sedimentary territory if it's
sedimentary rock then sit should be
around here someplace then let's do some
tests to make sure it's sedimentary rock
this rock is light and has layers it
looks and feels like it's made up of
tiny grains of sand
and it bubbled up when i put it in
vinegar definitely sedimentary rock if
this is not somewhere around here i'll
eat my field guide
there he is
dude and do that how'd you find me way
out here it was sedimentary my dear
sydney
sid every rock on zula is waiting for
the bowling stones to play
can't you just do one more concert sorry
but i've done my time hanging with those
two the bowling stones are history
[Music]
sid this is a zoolophone
[Applause]
[Music]
oh my straw
i'm not too bad in fact i'm pretty good
[Music]
[Applause]
i remember you said that metamorphic
rocks are often formed when mountains
are formed
you're absolutely right there are many
different tests for the many different
kinds of metamorphic rocks but if i'm
right wow what a nice rock look at all
those pieces it looks like this rock was
formed from pieces of other rocks that
got squeezed and cemented together that
tells me that we're surrounded by
metamorphic rock and if i'm right
there's marilyn let's go
[Music]
so you see if you don't come back with
us save our soil we'll be in terrible
trouble you know that sounds like a
great idea
oh but maybe it's a really bad idea
oh it's just so hard to make up my mind
i've been under so much pressure lately
and eat that's okay i have an idea
yeah who's calling
hello
iggy is that you
it's for you
sid
iggy look we wanted to try and get you
all to play just one last concert save
our soil is depending on you your fans
are depending on you i do it if marilyn
would stop acting like she's the best
rock there is oh me what about you mr i
put the fire in this band there you go
dude spoiling the vibe me yeah you
you're both wrong
it makes no sense for you to argue about
this because there's no such thing as a
better rock zeter's right don't you see
you're all part of the same stuff that
makes up our planet in fact sedimentary
and igneous can both become metamorphic
so you might even be related and what's
more
you are the bowling stones
it's the band you've been waiting long
for
the
bowling stones
[Music]
i'm a bowling stone and i'm quite well
know is who i am you know i'm
fire formed i gotta keep it warm now
listen for the
[Applause]
[Music]
and so for one night only the zulu
patrol became the rock and patrol
[Applause]
welcome to the malto moment
zeta's knowledge of rock saved the
concert she knew that rocks are
classified into three groups according
to how they're formed
igneous rocks are formed when magma
escapes from beneath the earth's surface
and cools or when magma cools beneath
the earth's surface do you remember how
sedimentary rocks are formed out of
macaroni and glue
nope they're formed when clay silt sand
and pebbles settle to the bottom of a
river sea or ocean the third type of
rock is metamorphic metamorphic rock
starts out as igneous or sedimentary but
is changed by a lot of heat or a lot of
pressure under the earth and we can test
and observe how rocks look to figure out
what type they are and remember
rock's not just plain old rock or plain
old rock and roll
[Music]
[Music]
space. It's one of the most interesting
workplaces around. Take the Zula Patrol.
Today, their job is to measure a volcano
that looks like it's erupting snow. Wow,
that's going to make a pretty big
snowman.
These volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io
sure are hot stuff. or in this case, hot
stuff that becomes cold stuff. These hot
sulfur eruptions cool off in space and
become almost like snow. Sulfur snow, of
course.
I never knew moons of other planets even
have volcanoes.
Oh my. Yes. A few of them have volcanoes
that erupt, like that one. Other moons
have volcanoes that no longer erupt.
And this one's very active.
Volcanoes really are awesome, Molto. But
what exactly is a volcano?
I'd be happy to show you in the
Moltoedia.
Volcanoes are hills or mountains that
form around a crack in the Earth's
surface or crust. This sometimes can
take a few weeks or it can take millions
of years.
Like the crust on a sandwich.
Exactly. Only in this case, the crust is
the top layer of a planet like Earth.
Oh, I get it. The crust is a solid rock
part where everybody lives.
That's right. But underneath the crust,
there's another layer of rock and
material that's been melted by heat.
Scientists call this material magma.
It looks like melted cheese,
but it's much hotter. So hot, in fact,
that the magma pushes the crust, the
land, apart, and the pressure from below
causes the magma to rise up through the
crack.
It looks like it's searching for the
weakest spot in the crust to pop out of.
It is. And when it finds the weakest
spot and comes out of the crack, it's
called an eruption.
As soon as the magma is on the outside
of the volcano, it gets a new name,
lava. When hot lava pours out of the
volcano like it's doing right now, the
volcano is called an active volcano.
When a volcano is not erupted for some
time, but shows signs that it could
erupt, we call that an inactive or
dormant volcano.
It's kind of like it's sleeping.
Yes, but the volcano could wake up at
any time and start pouring hot lava out.
then it would be called an active
volcano again.
There are also very old volcanoes that
haven't erupted in a very long time. We
call these types of volcanoes extinct.
Wow,
that's our volcano hotline. We'd better
go answer it fast.
It's VOP Zula Patrol. Thank goodness
you're there. I'm really worried about
my cousin Fielding
V. What's wrong?
He was supposed to have a tiny eruption,
but he didn't. I'm worried that if he
doesn't erupt soon, pressure could build
up inside him, and his small eruption
could turn into a really big one.
A major eruption could hurt the area
around him.
Can you help him?
This is a job for the Zula Patrol.
I'm sorry you had to make a special
trip. I'm sure it's nothing. Well, you
do look a little dormant. Inactive, that
is. But other than that, I can't find
anything wrong with you, Fielding. I'm
still concerned. He's supposed to be an
active volcano. Something's just not
right. I think I'd better go inside
Fielding and take a closer look.
Can we go with you? We want to see what
goes on inside a volcano.
Why don't we all go?
But it's going to be really, really hot
in there. We're going to need some
special protection.
I'm going to draw what we see when we're
inside fielding.
So, you're doing a field drawing of
fielding?
I'll draw one, too. That way, we'll have
a record of everything we see, and maybe
it will help us help fielding.
[Music]
Oh, a fat tickles.
This reminds me of an elevator shaft.
Yes, this is where the magma would flow
up if Fielding was erupting.
Oh my stars. Now, how are we going to
get under this rock where Fielding's
magma is?
No problem, Molto. I brought along your
portable particleizer just in case.
[Music]
Look, there's Fielding's magma.
Oh.
Oh,
also, it looks like the magma is getting
more active. What does that mean?
It means that Fielding might be getting
ready to erupt. Everybody out.
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
See, I'm fine.
Fielding is active inside, but he isn't
erupting. Why not?
I don't know, but we've got to find out
what its problem is. And soon. The
rumbling we heard along with the active
bubbling magma are warning signs of a
major eruption. The longer Fielding goes
without erupting, the more powerful and
damaging his eruption could be to the
area around him.
I wonder maybe he isn't sick. Maybe he's
keeping himself from erupting.
Bula, volcanoes simply don't do that.
Well, how do we know?
Bula Fielding says he's fine.
Well, maybe he's just not ready to talk
about what's bothering him.
Maybe his neighbors know something.
Excuse me, madam. May we ask you a few
questions about your neighbor Fielding?
You know, I've been wondering what's
been going on with him.
All that rumbling and carrying on. And
you should see the smoke and dust coming
out of him. My word,
that's not good.
I may like to rock and roll, but when
those volcano dudes rock, they rock
everything around them. We don't need
that kind of party. Oh my, poor
Fielding.
We prefer things nice and quiet.
Yes, and that volcano's got anger
management issues that could cause some
real harm.
He's simply not our kind of volcano.
Oh dear.
Gee, none of Fielding's neighbors seem
to like him.
I know this sounds odd, but maybe
Fielding won't erupt because he's afraid
that if he does, his neighbors will like
him even less.
Bula has a point.
How do we get Fielding's neighbors to
like him?
Maybe we need to help Fielding like
himself first.
That's it. We'll help him remember how
great it is to be a volcano.
Me? Why do you want to know about me?
Well, uh, I've never been a volcano. And
I wondered what it must be like. I'll
bet it was a lot of fun growing up.
Oh, it was. It was. I remember it all
like it was just 60 million years ago.
Back when I was just a little hole
forming around a crack under the sea.
Ooh. Then when I was a teenager, it
seemed like all I did was grow.
I made some nice land.
I created soil that was good for plants
and trees to grow in. And animals came
to live around all those plants and
trees. I played a big part in giving
everyone in Volcano Valley a better
life. And then I entered my artistic
building phase. I made all kinds of
beautiful rocks and mountains. And I
wasn't the only talented volcano in my
family. On Earth, my aunt Tilly is an
extinct volcano, but she's really
enjoying her retirement as Oregon's
Crater Lake.
And Uncle Wilbat, a dormant volcano, is
now Mount Hood, the highest mountain in
Oregon. Then there's great Grandpa
Olympus. What a character. He became the
biggest inactive volcano on Mars.
Gee, volcanoes really have done a lot of
good things.
I wish I could erupt. Maybe I wouldn't
be so crabby all the time if I did. Gee,
Mom and Dad, you never told us we were
made from a volcano.
Uh, well, yeah, son. Mostly on your
mother's side.
Hurry.
Awesome. We're part volcano. How cool is
that?
Fielding rocks.
Zula patrol neighbors. I'm here to say
that I'm a volcano and that's okay. And
it's thanks to your help that I can
finally
[Music]
erupt.
That feels so much better. Well, it
looks like I was wrong. Fielding does
have feelings. So, I guess you could say
volcanoes are lavable.
Get it? Lava.
Oh, I get it. Lava because volcanoes
have lava. So, they're
lavable. Well, I thought it was funny.
[Music]
Hello there, science seekers. It's time
for our molto moment.
Can someone tell me what this is? A
mountain with the hiccups.
No way. It's a volcano. It's a mountain
or a hill formed around a crack in the
earth's crust. Not all mountains are
volcanoes, but the ones that are don't
hiccup. They erupt.
Do you know what the hot material inside
the volcano is called?
It would do.
Nope. Magma. And when it comes out, it
has a new name.
Surely.
No, it's called lava,
right? We used to call it that hot red
gooey stuff that comes out of a volcano,
but by the time we finished saying it,
it was too late to run.
Until next time, science seekers.
